Be it a reality TV show about drunken housemates looking for love on the Jersey Shore or a comedy about six friends who meet in a coffee shop, somewhere along the line, those concepts were approved for general population viewing. But what happens to the shows that don’t quite make the grade? Snippetz investigates those close calls, possibly shedding some light onto what went wrong.

based on the demos or pilots, those same executives meet up to exhibit their new show to advertisers. This is called the “upfronts.” This is the allimportant time when advertisers buy ad time “up front” for the shows they feel will be a hit in the fall season.
IN THE BEGINNING… It is said that the five main American TV networks – ABC, The CW, FOX, CBS and NBC – get up to 500 pitches for new show concepts every summer. From these pitches, each network will choose somewhere between 25 and 70 of those ideas and request scripts for them. By the beginning of the next year, the networks will have pared down the field to about 10 to 20 different concepts and shoot pilot episodes of them.
HIT… We all know what happens to the ideas that get aired; they become the new TV shows we see in the spring. Generally speaking, these shows are slated to run for 13 episodes in the fall season. If it gets picked up for a full season, it will run for 22 episodes. Once that show reaches 100 episodes, it can be placed into syndication, meaning the show’s rights are sold to another network (or perhaps re-orked by the same network) so that it can be shown outside of the regularly scheduled time, i.e. reruns.
The pilot is a standalone episode that is filmed and shown to network executives, and sometimes test audiences, with the intention of gauging how successful the concept would be if it was made into a series.
A show’s success can be measured in a variety of ways such as the type and amount of advertising, critical reviews and time slot placement. The Nielsen ratings are really the endall, though. Weekly ratings are published and if the ratings are good, a network will likely extend the show
The contemporary practice is to use a demo (a shorter version of a pilot which is almost never aired) as a way to save time. The demo’s purpose is the same: to highlight the concept, writing and casting. If it is well-received, the show moves on to the next step in the production process. If it isn’t, the network has two options: fix the problems they find if they think the overall concept is viable; or drop the idea completely.
to run through a full season or sign it on for a second season. If the ratings are bad, the network usually cans the show and throws in a replacement show to finish out the season. As with the upfronts, “sweeps” week takes place in May and features all new episodes of shows with major plot development, twists, turns and whatever other gimmicks a network can come up with to increase their show’s ratings. Doing well in the ratings during sweeps week can almost guarantee the show will get signed on for more episodes.
…OR MISS But what happens to those shows that don’t make the cut? Naturally, they don’t get aired. And that’s where the fun begins…here is a taste of some of the “cast-off” shows and often it’s not hard to see why. • Ev and Ocho. This reality show, produced by VH1, followed the lives of NFL wide

receiver Chad “Ocho Cinco” Johnson and his wife, Evelyn Lozada. It was slated to debut in early 2008 and had even taped 11 episodes. However, three weeks before the premiere, Johnson was arrested for assaulting Lozada and VH1 opted not to air the show. • Gay Robot. The name pretty much says it all. This show featured a robot who spills a wine cooler on himself which fries his circuit board, causing him to question his sexuality and ultimately decide that he is gay. The show was produced by Happy Madison productions and the pilot episode was set to air on Comedy Central in 2006 but never did.
• Our Little Genius. What better way to make money than to exploit your child’s intellectual abilities? In 2010, that’s just what this show attempted to do. Child contestants were asked trivia questions and correct answers earned them cash. Producer Mark Burnett with the FOX network called a halt to the debut just one week before it was set to premiere. He claimed he was concerned that contestants were getting the answers fed to them prior to filming, which prompted a Federal Communications Commission investigation. hood. In 2005,ABC introduced this show which consisted of seven families all competing for a “dream home” in Austin, Texas. The 3,300 square foot home was located in an upper-class neighborhood and the families already living in the neighborhood got to decide who to keep and who to evict. The last family standing won the house. The families included a Hispanic family; a black family; a Korean family; a white gay couple that had adopted a black baby; and a “white trash” family with a stripper for a mother. The white upper-class people already residing in the neighborhood had plenty to say about the contestants, which prompted ABC not to air the six-episode season they had already filmed. • Rewind. In 1997, this show was announced at the May upfronts by the FOX network, but it (along with many other shows set to debut from then to 2003) was pulled from the schedule three weeks prior to the premiere date. The show was supposed to feature actor

• The Dictator. This show might have stood a chance at becoming a series had it not been for a writer’s strike. The CBS-produced show from 1988 featured Christopher Lloyd as a “deposed tyrant from a small Caribbean island” who, after being exiled, takes over the daily operations of a Laundromat. Thanks to the strike, the show only filmed three episodes, none of which went to air.

• Who’s Your Daddy? This FOX reality show actually aired one episode in 2005 before it was cancelled but we think it still counts. It featured adult contestants who were adopted as babies and placed in a room with 25 different men to guess which one was their birth father. The winners were to receive $100,000 for guessing the right man. However, adoption-rights groups weren’t pleased and one FOX affiliate refused to air the episode, prompting FOX to yank the series before the remaining five episodes were aired.

*** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: This past summer, I got the shock of my life at a family get-together. My cousin, whom I hadn’t seen in 10 years, has bulging eyes. Her mother -- my aunt -- told me it was due to a thyroid problem. I’d never heard of a thyroid problem affecting the eyes. Does it? -- G.D.
ANSWER: My guess is trigger finger. The tendons that bend the fingers travel from the forearm into the palm and then onto each finger and the thumb. On their way to the fingers, a sheath of tough tissue encircles them. Repetitive movements of the fingers irritate the protective tendon sheaths, and they swell. The swelling squeezes the tendon, and the popping noise you hear is the tendon freeing itself from its swollen sheath. That snapping noise sounds like the noise heard when cocking a gun’s trigger. As time goes by, the finger might become locked for some time in the bent position. You don’t want to hear this, but rest is essential to permit the tendon to move smoothly. If you must work, padded gloves afford some protection for the finger. Gripping a tool like a hammer is particularly hard on the tendon and its sheath. Tools with a larger-than-normal handle are less of a problem. The best protection is wearing a metal splint so that the finger can’t move. Your doctor can give you a cortisone injection into the problem area, and that

FORCING BULBS How to force bulbs to do your laundry. Yeah! That would be something wouldn’t it? No we’re just going to force them to grace our homes with their beautiful blooms and fragrance. That’s nice too. You can force any kind of bulb but forcing Paperwhites is by far the simplest. Paperwhites don’t require a cooling period. If you decide to force other bulbs like Hyacinth, Crocus or Tulips they need to be chilled for a time specific to each plant which is usually between six and eight weeks. You can adjust the times for the kind of bulbs you are forcing and then follow the same instructions on how to force Paperwhites. They make some beautiful “forcing vases” specifically designed for forcing bulbs. These hold the bulbs and allow the roots to be seen reaching for the water while keeping your bulbs dry so they don’t rot. They are beautiful as well as a great science lesson.

Next you can fill the container part way with either pebbles or potting soil and set the bulbs in pointed side up. Don’t let your bulbs sit in water or they will rot! Let the water be available right under the bulb so the roots will grow into it. Place your bulbs in a cool place for the first couple of weeks and once the shoots are two to three inches tall you can move them to a brighter and warmer area. This will prevent them from becoming leggy and droopy.

Y
our life, like mine, is a series of interwoven relationships. Some are (were) wonderful, life-giving experiences and some are (were) absolutely horrible, but all worked together to make us who we are today. If it wasn’t for the relationship my mother had with my father (they were married over 60 years) I wouldn’t be here at all. My mother helped me survive my infancy, my father bailed me out of several tough situations, my older brother taught me things I needed to know (and some I didn’t need to know), and my wife helps me every day to learn what it means to be a man/husband/father. Then there is everyone else in my little world: my children, grandchildren,
Sure, others have entered out lives for a second, or a season, or a lifetime, but we have also entered their lives. Not only are others impacting us, at the very same time we are impacting others for good or ill. it comes back and changes into a beautiful good fairy.
friends, neighbors, business associates, and on and on and on, each having their influence on me.

Dozens, hundreds, perhaps thousands of other people along the way picked me up when I fell down, kicked me in the pants when I needed it, chided me, encouraged me, forgave me, comforted me, calmed me, awakened me, insulted me, complimented me, taught me, listened to me, cried with me, laughed with me, loved me, hated me, etc. Because I’m over 60 years old I could make a long list of the people who helped form me into the person I am today. And it’s not over as I’m not yet all that I can be. But life isn’t just about the people who influence us it’s also about the people we influence.
The little girl thinks for a moment and replies, “I want to be happy.” The fairy leans forward and whispers in her ear and then suddenly vanishes. As the girl grew, no one in the land was happier than she. Whenever anyone asked her for the secret of happiness, she would only smile and say, “I listened to a good fairy.” As she grew quite old, the neighbors were afraid the fabulous secret might die with her. “Tell us, please,” they begged, “tell us what the fairy said.” The now lovely old lady simply smiled and said, “She told me that everyone, no matter how secure they seemed, had need of me.” Buscaglia concludes the story with this five-word line: We all need each other.
Leo Buscaglia in the forward of his book Loving Each Other published first in the early 1980s tells the fable of a young girl who is walking though a meadow when she sees a butterfly impaled upon a thorn. Very carefully she releases it and the butterfly starts to fly away. Then
I can celebrate or denigrate what others have done for me or to me. But what have I done for others? Am I one who encourages, loves, cheers, etc., or am I a person to be avoided? Remember, life isn’t just about the people who influence us it’s also about the people we influence. So here’s your kick in the pants: Someone needs you today. Someone needs your love, your encouragement, or maybe just your presence. So get to work on those relationships. Value the people closest to you. Express appreciation, pat someone on the back, offer a word of affirmation, but do something to improve the quality of those interweaving relationships that make life worth living. There are a lot of butterflies out there impaled on thorns. You and I can help set them free.

4 cups chopped cooked turkey 10 ounce can condensed cream of chicken soup 10 ounce can condensed cream of jalapeno, or poblano soup 1 cup mild salsa 1 cup sour cream 2 tablespoons chili powder 1 onion, finely chopped 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon black pepper 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper 16 corn tortillas, torn into pieces 1 to 2 cups cooked vegetables 1-1/2 cups shredded Pepper Jack, Colby, Cheddar or Cojack cheese 3 cups tortilla chips 1/3 cup chopped fresh cilantro 1. Spray inside of the slow cooker with nonstick cooking spray. In large bowl, mix together the soups, salsa, sour cream, chili powder, onion, garlic, salt, black pepper and cayenne. Add the chopped, cooked turkey to the soup mixture and mix well.

New DVD Releases for Week of November 26, 2012 PICKS OF THE WEEK “Men in Black 3” (PG-13) -- This third installment about agents policing the secret world of space-alien immigration adds a twist with time travel -- and it’s still watchable! Agent J (Will Smith) loses track of his partner, tight-lipped Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones.) The Men In Black HQ says K has been dead for more than 40 years. Agent J has to travel back in time and team up with the young K (Josh Brolin) to stop an alien assassin.
Don’t worry, it’s better than MiB 2. Brolin’s performance as a 29-year-old Tommy Lee Jones (Brolin is in his 40s) is the highlight of the movie. The villain, Boris the Animal, is played by comedian Jemaine Clement, who dons a perfectly over-thetop persona instead of his usual dry humor. It may not recapture the magic of the original, but this “threequel” is worth a watch. “ParaNorman” (PG) -- Norman is an outsider with a bully problem and a supernatural gift. When zombies and ghosts terrorize his tiny town, the hapless citizens can turn to only one person, Norman, the weird little kid who says he speaks with the dead. With the help of his only friend, his annoying sister, a brain-dead jock and the local bully, Norman has to fight a witch’s curse to save the town. It’s a lot of fun and a lot spookier than you would expect. It’s all done in 3D stop-mo-
tion animation by the same company that made the creepy “Coraline.” Adults as well as young’uns will be plenty entertained, provided everyone is at least 7 years old and can handle a scary and emotionally weighty finale. “Lawless” (R) -- In the hills of Virginia, the Bondurant brothers were legendary Prohibition-era outlaws. This movie takes the facts and tries to pull out a gritty, dramatic, visually stunning crime drama. It almost succeeds. The cast is fantastic: Tom Hardy as an outlaw older brother, Jessica Chastain is a strong woman drawn to the wrong men, Gary Oldman is the infamous Floyd Banner, and Guy Pearce is the chilling federal investigator come to shut the brothers down. The film has a healthy dose of violence, matching pound for pound what it has in acting talent.

“Step Up Revolution” (PG-13) -- The greedy corporatists are about to bulldoze a beloved working-class neighborhood, and only a diverse team of young dancers can save the community center, with their dancing. It’s a plot as old and predictable as “war veteran loses his family, then kills all the bad guys,” floated along only by its action thrills (or in “Step Up’s” case, dance numbers). The dancing is fine and flashy, but it’s not worth the soulless exchanges in between that pass for “drama.”

nless Congress and the President take action and quickly we are heading to one of the greatest self-inflicted financial disasters of our lifetime. The combination of mandatory spending cuts and the elimination of virtually every tax cut since 2001 could very well force us into another recession. So what is the Financial Cliff and what can we expect to happen if nothing is done. Here are some of the key components.
Bush Tax Cuts Expire If the Bush tax cuts expire the top marginal tax rate will increase to 39.6%. All other rates will also rise and the 10% tax bracket will be eliminated. Capital gain taxes will return to 20% and the maximum tax on dividend income will increase to 43.4%. The estate tax will return to 2001 levels -- increasing the maximum rate to 55% and reducing the exclusion amount to $220,550.
Payroll Tax Holiday Ends For the last two years there has been a 2% payroll tax holiday. In January workers can expect their Social Security taxes to rise from 4.2% to 6.2%. The extension for workers receiving unemployment benefits will also end.
Alternative Minimum Tax Expands

Currently it is estimated that 4.4 million taxpayers are subject to the alternative minimum tax. That number could increase dramatically to over 32 million when the annual adjustments for inflation that Congress has enacted expire.
