SNIPPETZ REVEALS THE TRUTH ABOUT

SANTA’S REINDEER

ISSUE 581 • DECEMBER 17, 2012

by Lindsey Harrison

“I think there should be something in science called the ‘reindeer effect.’ I don’t know what it would be but I think it would be good to hear someone say, ‘Gentlemen, what we have here is a terrifying example of the reindeer effect.’” – Jack Handy, Saturday Night Live

M

ost of us have probably heard the story about how Santa travels around the world in one night, pulled in a sleigh by a team of flying reindeer to deliver presents to all the good boys and girls. There’s been so much controversy surrounding these wonderful creatures that we at Snippetz decided to set the record straight. Santa’s Reindeer... Continued on Page 2

REINDEER DO EXIST Reindeer are a type of deer that are typically found in the Artic and Subarctic regions such as Canada, Alaska, Greenland and just about anywhere in Europe and Asia north of the 50th latitude. This might account for why Santa chose these animals to pull his sleigh; they would’ve been easily found near his home at the North Pole.

DONNER AND BLITZEN…OR DUNDER AND BLIXEM?

While generally numerous in population, several subspecies are rare while at least one has become extinct. This could be due to reindeer hunting which has been a common activity for centuries upon centuries. It has become an important source of clothing, food, shelter and tools for many cultures that have maintained a more traditional lifestyle, such as the Inuit. Their coats range in color which changes with the changing of the seasons. Some species are smaller and mostly white, while others are much larger and sport darker coats. Traditionally, Santa’s reindeer are referred to as “tiny,” which is consistent with the size of the northern-most species and likely to be the ones found near the North Pole. Often in more modern portrayals however, one of the larger species is used.

of the poem was written by Clement Clarke Moore (and eventually he became credited with being the poem’s original author, even though he wasn’t), and in that version, their names were changed to Donder and Blitzen. And Donder was eventually changed to Donner by Johnny Marks in the song “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” It isn’t known why Marks changed the lyrics, although some suspect it was so that, when translated into German, they would mean “thunder” and “lightning.” Since about 1950, the two have consistently been referred to as Donner and Blitzen, although no one knows for certain which names are the correct names. Perhaps Santa could clear up some of the confusion, but as of yet, no one has been able to get a definitive answer from him.

plaining that there won’t be a Christmas one year because Blitzen (or is it Blixem?) is hurt and can’t fly. Apparently, Santa made a radio announcement saying that he hoped to make his normal Christmas Eve flight with “all of the other reindeer.” However, Olive thinks he says, “Olive, the other reindeer.” She decides she must get to the North Pole to help out Santa since he clearly needed it. A series of random events occur, Olive eventually finds Santa, helps him fly the sleigh on a successful present-delivering run and returns to her home. It isn’t clear if this particular Olive is the same as the Olive who “used to laugh and call him (Rudolph) names,” but she has not been asked to return for a repeat flight. Perhaps she made a bad first impression…

AND THE BIGGEST QUESTION OF THEM ALL…

WHO IS OLIVE? We all know the song about Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer. His nose is a bright glowing red that earns him significant ridicule from Olive, the other reindeer. But who is this Olive, anyway?

Not to sound skeptical or anything, but it seems a little strange to think of reindeer flying. But there’s a good explanation behind one of the most controversial Christmas events ever:

Olive is actually a Jack Russell Terrier. She overhears her owner com-

magical dust. That’s right, magical dust. Think Pixie dust like in “Peter Pan” only without the “happy thoughts” requirement in order to fly. It is said that once Santa’s sleigh is loaded up with all the Christmas presents, he reaches into his big Santa pockets and pulls out a super special pouch. Inside this super special pouch is the aforementioned magical dust. The magical dust is said to be made from all the Christmas dreams since the beginning of Christmas dreaming. Just a sprinkle of this dust and each reindeer can now take wing… or is it take antler? Apparently, the antlers on the reindeer are said to be special receivers of Christmas dreams. The dust, which naturally can’t stay on the reindeer through their whole flight (that’s just ridiculous), tends to dissipate over time. But the antlers pick up on the Christmas dreams the children around the world are dreaming, allowing the reindeer to maintain their ability to overcome the force of gravity pulling them down. But that’s not the end of this reindeer-flying tale. After delivering all the presents, the reindeer are said to feel so much joy from knowing how

excited all the children will be when they get to open their gifts, that this joy is able to keep them aloft until they return home to the North Pole.

In the wild, reindeer eat the only thing available in the harsh climate they inhabit: shrubs and grasses. In captivity, they usually eat hay, alfalfa, grasses or willow and birch trees. Santa likes to have a tasty treat while he’s making his global gift delivery run, but what should you leave out for his reindeer? Truthfully, they seem to do the majority of the work.

Santa’s reindeer are said to be used to a diet consisting mostly of leafy greens, carrots, perhaps some apples (these must be imported, unless Santa has designed some sort of green house in which he can grow these items on site). But as a snack, it has become a tradition to leave oatmeal for Santa’s reindeer to eat.

CANCER VACCINE FOR YOUNG GIRLS DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Please advise about the Gardasil vaccine. My granddaughter just turned 18 (to date, no sexual activity -- really) and begins college next year. Her doctor is pushing the vaccine for her and for her just-turned-14 sister. I value your common-sense approach to medical issues. What do you recommend? -- S.B. ANSWER: Without any hesitation, I recommend wholeheartedly the vaccine for protection against the human papillomavirus. It’s the virus that causes cervical cancer. Gardasil protects against the most common strains of cancer-causing papillomavirus, strains 16 and 18. This vaccine is a medical breakthrough. Never has there been a vaccine for protection from any cancer. Your granddaughters are not too young. The recommendation suggests that the vaccine be given when a girl is 11 or 12, but it can still be given up to age 26. For best effectiveness, it should be given before a girl has had any sexual encounters. The human papillomavirus is extremely widespread, and exposure to the virus before the vaccine has been given lessens the vaccine’s ability to protect against the virus and the cancer it causes. A second papillomavirus vaccine is also on the market. It’s called Cervarix. The booklet on cervical cancer and Pap smears discusses these topics in greater detail. It does not discuss the vaccines. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 1102W, Box 536475,

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have a question about diabetes. My husband has it. He saw a doctor on a television program who said that taking 2 teaspoons of red vinegar at lunch and dinner lowers your blood sugar a lot. Do you think this is true? Should sweetener be added, or water? -- N.F.

ANSWER: I believe you’re referring to the work of Carol Johnston, Ph.D., a professor in the nutrition department of Arizona State University. She showed that taking 2 tablespoons of vinegar before or during a meal lowers the sudden spike in blood sugar that happens with eating. Such spikes are not good if they are very high and occur often. They disturb blood sugar control.

I don’t know why the TV doctor insisted on red vinegar. Dr. Johnston didn’t. You can take the vinegar along with olive oil as a salad dressing. You can dilute it in water if you want. You can add an artificial sweetener to it if the sweetener doesn’t say not to. And you can start with the TV doctor’s recommendation of 2 teaspoons instead of 2 tablespoons. See if the 2 teaspoons work. If it doesn’t, increase the dose until you reach the 2 tablespoons.

MOMENTS IN TIME THE HISTORY CHANNEL

• On Dec. 18, 1777, the new United States celebrates its first national day of thanksgiving, commemorating the American victory at the Battle of Saratoga after the surrender of Gen. John Burgoyne and 5,000 British troops that October. • On Dec. 22, 1808, Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony has its world premiere in Vienna. The concert venue was freezing cold and the orchestra played poorly enough to force the nearly deaf composer -- also acting as conductor and pianist -- to stop the ensemble partway into one passage and start again from the very beginning. • On Dec. 17, 1903, near Kitty Hawk, N.C., Orville and Wilbur Wright make the first successful flight of a self-propelled aircraft. Orville piloted the gasoline-powered, propeller-driven biplane, which stayed aloft for 12 seconds and covered 120 feet on its inaugural flight. • On Dec. 19, 1917, four teams of the National Hockey League play the league’s first two games. At the time of its inception, the NHL was made up of the Canadiens and the

Wanderers (both of Montreal), the Ottawa Senators, the Quebec Bulldogs and the Toronto Arenas. • On Dec. 23, 1968, the crew and captain of the U.S. intelligence gathering ship Pueblo are released after 11 months imprisonment by the government of North Korea. The ship, and its 83-man crew, was seized by warships on Jan. 23 and charged with intruding into North Korean waters. • On Dec. 21, 1970, rock star Elvis Presley pays a surprise visit to President Richard Nixon at the White House to discuss the war on drugs. Presley apparently was not searched before being granted admission: Upon meeting Nixon, he presented the president with a gift -- a World War II-era Colt .45 pistol. • On Dec. 20, 1989, “Roger & Me,â€? a documentary by Michael Moore about his quest to interview Roger Smith, then chairman and chief executive officer of General Motors, opens in theaters. The film examines the devastating impact on the people of Moore’s hometown of Flint, Mich., following the closing of several General Motors auto plants in the area.

Men have a problem with those three words, “I love you,” they find them hard to say. I guess it’s because it’s just not that macho for men to express their feelings of love for someone – especially another man. We don’t have any problem expressing anger but to express love? That’s much more difficult.

THREE WORDS TOUGH MEN FIND HARD TO SAY By Dr. Ron Ross

A

ll born in the 1920s on the prairies of Colorado were three brothers, Lloyd, Chuck and Cecil. They grew up together in Julesburg, Colorado but were separated after World War 2 by long miles and differing interests. Lloyd lived in a variety of places from Colorado to Texas and ultimately Florida. Cecil moved to California and stayed there. Only Chuck stayed in Colorado his whole life. The three were together at their parent’s funeral services but after that were never together again. Chuck, the youngest brother, died first so his funeral was held in Greeley. The other two brothers flew in for the service, Cecil from California and Lloyd, my dad, came from Florida.

A few months later Uncle Cecil was driving to church with a backseat full of food for a potluck dinner with his Sunday-School class. He felt something was not quite right so he pulled off the road into a parking place, had a heart attack and died alone in the front seat of his car.

Over the years I had seen my Uncle Cecil fewer than a dozen times so we didn’t really know each other that well. However, on the day of the funeral I had one very special moment with him. He got me off to a private place and said, “Ron, I want to tell you something.” He paused before he began as if to gather his thoughts carefully.

At his funeral his pastor offered the hundreds in attendance the opportunity to speak about this man I barely knew. A steady stream of young and old took to the microphone to tell their fond memory of and deep love for my Uncle Cecil. I can tell you this, because of the life he lived and according to the stories told at his funeral, many people young and old, male and female, loved Uncle Cecil.

“A few months ago your dad called me and we talked for nearly an hour. It was wonderful! Then, when the conversation was about over and we were saying our good-byes, your dad said, ‘Cecil, I love you.’” He paused as he bit his lower lip and his eyes filled with tears. “Ron, in all my life I’ve never had another man tell me that he loves me, not even my own father.” Unfortunately our conversation was interrupted with the business of getting to Greeley for the funeral. It was the last personal conversation we would ever have because he returned to California before we had another chance to visit.

I’ve since wondered what he really meant when he said, “No man has ever told me he loves me.” It is possible he meant to say was, “No really important man in my life ever told me they loved me.”

et’s cut to the chase - as you may have heard, Pinz Bowling Center will be closing its doors on January 1st, 2013. The statement, simple as it may seem, means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. For this writer, it’s a place where I grew up. Whether it had been the old Bowling Alley or Pinz by name, the warehouse-like building is where my friendships and good times were had. We didn’t used to have so many options. It was the one place where there was “something to do”. It was open past nine after all, a rarity in our small community. For hundreds of others it was a home away from home; they knew the staff and all the other regulars. League bowlers could grab a lane and pay later, because they were trusted. Rodz Bar is where the party was. Every Saturday night, for years, the bar provided live music; something not easy to come by in the small town of Palmer Lake. The entire center gave a community something it never had; entertainment. It was ‘the premier entertainment center in the Tri-Lakes Area’ in fact. That’s the line I’d typed so many times. But now, as I write one of my last articles ever for Pinz Bowling Center I’d like to do what I do best

9

And it’s not always those three little words as much as it is who says them. If I tell you “I love you” you might think, “Well, that’s nice.” But if your father says it or your son says it or your brother says it then it has much more meaning because it touches you deep within your crusty, macho soul and you never forget, like Uncle Cecil never forgot what Dad said to him. So you big, tough men out there, celebrate Christmas this year like you’ve never celebrated it before. Pick up the phone and call someone important and say to him, “I love you.” There is something about those three words spoken with conviction by one man into the heart of another that typifies the essence of Christmas. Because isn’t that what happened on Christmas day over two millennium ago? God looked down on fallen man and said with the gift of His own son, “I love you!” Comments to Dr.Ross@RonRossToday.com © Copyright 2012 Ronald D. Ross

– shamelessly promote something… The last chance to party at Pinz is upon us. With three major events remaining, you have plenty of options to get the fun out of your system. It starts Friday, with the End of the World Party! Dollar Bowling on a Friday Night will be the dooms-day deal for bowlers. In the bar, there will be a retrospective listen of music through the decades, featuring the interpretive dances of the Vagabond Misfits. Speaking of the dancing/singing ladies of satire; they’ll be putting on a full show on Saturday, December 29th. It’s supposed to be a riot (in the good way). And of course, Pinz will be hosting its final party on its final day. Monday, December 31st. New Years Eve. Live Music, Giveaways, Champaign toast at midnight, drink specials, and more will be available in Rodz Bar and Grill on its final night. As the band hits the stage and plays those songs you’ve heard a thousand times before, try to remember the moment. Try to remember all the time you spent at Pinz. The people you met. The memories you made. Try to remember all of the employees; what it means for them. Try to remember co-owners Al Palmonari and Gloria McCartan; what they brought to the community. The local charities and non-profits they constantly helped fund. Yes, when that last song fills your ears and your body starts to sing along; even though you’ve danced to it a hundred times before; this will be the last. Dance like there’s no tomorrow.

HERE IS AN IDEA Let’s buy Christmas presents from small local businesses and self-employed people. For example, from your neighbor who sells online, a local craftsperson who makes jewelry, the stunning local florists shop, the local bakers that provide those delicious homemade cakes, buns and chocolates. The guys that run a cafe or a salon. Let’s make sure our money goes to individual people and not multi-national companies. This way, more local people will have a brighter Christmas. Supporting local businesses is an awesome way to show community support!

CHICKEN PIE WARMS UP WINTER

C

hicken pie has become one of my favorite comfort-food recipes. Savory pies date back to the Medieval era. Originally, the sole purpose of the double crust was to protect the ingredients from the metallic flavor of the pot. The crust wasn’t designed to be eaten and was discarded after the filling was cooked. This single-crust chicken pie recipe is a savory combination of modern convenience products and classic homemade touches. Use a leftover baked chicken or a store-bought rotisserie chicken, leftover cooked vegetables or frozen mixed vegetables, and a

The creamy sauce combined with the chicken and vegetable filling, and topped with a layer of sharp cheddar cheese turns this classic pie into a hearty, one-dish meal. The filling can be made in advance and either refrigerated or frozen. Just make sure that you heat the filling before sprinkling on the cheese and topping it with the pie crust. This savory chicken pie recipe is great way to warm up during a cold winter day.

New DVD Releases for Week of December 17, 2012 PICKS OF THE WEEK “Pitch Perfect” (PG-13) -- The Bellas are an all-vocal university ensemble looking to reinvent themselves after an embarrassing performance. Beca (Ana Kendrick) is an incoming college freshman who’s already too cool for school, but somehow gets coerced into joining this singing group. Of course, the gaggle of misfits drastically improve their singing and take on the obnoxious rival singers, the Treble Makers.

It’s more tolerable than an episode of “Glee.” The musical performances are impressive, even for those who aren’t into such things. Kendrick brings vocal talent and star power to the musical numbers. Self-referential humor and some promising young comicrelief actors push this one over the line from tolerable to even enjoyable. “Total Recall” (PG-13) -- In the grimy, bluetinted future, you can get sweet memories implanted in your brain. Instead of taking a vacation or seeking therapy, Douglas Quaid (Colin Farrell) chooses to have memories of another life as a super-spy zapped into his brain. During the process, something goes awry and Quaid is suddenly hunted by the authorities and finds himself in the role of revolutionary hero. This movie hardly has the right to exist in the same universe as the 1990 film of the same name, starring good ol’ Arnold Schwarzenegger, so I’ll hold back on comparing the two. Don’t expect mind-bend-

ing science-fiction or over-the-top humor. This is boilerplate futuristic blockbuster thriller. The action sequences are nice, but your recall of the film will intertwine with the boring bits from movies like “Minority Report,” forming one blu-ish futuristic memory mush. “Trouble With the Curve” (PG-13) -Clint Eastwood snarls and grumps his way through this drama about a reluctant old codger reconnecting with his daughter through the business of baseball. Gus (Eastwood) is a renowned talent scout for major-league baseball, but it seems his age is catching up to him. His daughter (Amy Adams) takes a leave from her big-shot law firm to accompany him on one last season of high-pressure drafts. It’s a slow, predictable drama that isn’t exactly a stretch for ol’ Clint. “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days” (PG) -- Greg is the scrawny young man at the

16

center of the popular “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” book series. This misadventure has Greg pretending to have a summer job. The wimpy kid is getting bigger, and his lies become less endearing with every inch he grows. He’s outgrowing the precocious kid role and now faces the less appealing side of annoying adolescence. It’s not as sinister as all that -- everybody learns their lesson and bonds by the end -- but the charm of the story isn’t enough to reach folks who aren’t already fans.

8. Paying an old debt: If you had a debt go to collections long ago, and it rolled off your credit report because of the passing of time, paying that debt now will reactivate it. Your lender will see it as recent negative activity.

WHY YOUR MORTGAGE MIGHT BE DENIED

I

f your plan for the New Year involves getting ready to buy a home, you’ll need to make sure all your plans don’t fall apart at the last minute with a mortgage application that gets turned down. Go Banking Rates has compiled a list of 10 reasons that mortgages get rejected. 1. Too many jobs: If you’ve recently changed jobs or fields, have been unemployed or haven’t worked consistently in the past two years, your employment history could be a problem. Some lenders insist that you’ve kept the same job, unless you were promoted. 2. Child support and alimony: If you don’t disclose that you make these kind of payments, the lender can find out just by calling the courthouse. These payments are considered debts and must be reported on your application. 3. New applications for credit: If you apply for new credit between the time you fill out a mortgage application and are approved for the mortgage, you’ll likely have problems.

10. Secondary market: If your loan is to be sold on the secondary market, the qualification standards will be stricter. For more information, go online to GoBankingRates.com.

TIME IS RUNNING OUT ON CHARITY DEDUCTIONS

ou only have two weeks left to donate and take a tax deduction for 2012. Aside from the churches, Goodwill Industries and Salvation Army, organizations and foundations which promote education, science, literary works, prevention of animal cruelty, etc. are considered charities as well. Altruism is always important- unfortunately not all altruism is tax deductible. There are several different types of property donations, some of which are very obscure. Generally a donation of clothing, household items, food, cash and

A food donation is tax deductible if the contribution is related to the organization’s tax exempt purpose, and is used for the ill, needy or infants. A written statement from the organization must be provided detailing these provisions. Cash contributions include those paid by cash, check, electronic funds transfer, credit card, payroll deduction and text messages. A cash contribution cannot be deducted, regardless of the amount, unless the taxpayer has a financial record showing the name of the organization, date and amount, or obtains a written statement from the organization.

4. Closing old credit accounts: Your credit utilization ratios and availability changes the minute you close an account. That skews the numbers lenders look at in deciding whether to give you a loan. Don’t touch old accounts. 5. Borrowing money for the down payment: If money has been given to you, don’t try to claim that you saved it. The lender will find out, and the loan will likely be denied. 6. Late dues by condo tenants: If you’re trying to buy a condo, the Federal Housing Administration insists that not more than 15 percent of the tenants be more than 60 days late in paying dues. 7. The loan is too small: If you’re seeking a loan of $50,000 or less, you might be denied a mortgage. Making a small loan is not worth it to a lender.

The financial record can include a canceled check, bank statement and credit card statement showing the organization, date and amount. For payroll deductions, a paystub or a W-2 showing the amount is sufficient. And for cell phone or text donations, the IRS is allowing copies of phone records or statements if it shows the organization, date and amount. Myth Buster: The days of donating $20 a week to church, and then deducting $1,040 are long gone. Since 2007, taxpayers must have a receipt for every dollar donated. An organization is required by law to give a written statement for any single donation over $75. Read that again. The organization is required. It is easy to think this means taxpayers do not need to keep receipts under $75. You do.
