BENDING THE RULES OF TRADITIONAL DATING:

SNIPPETZ LOOKS INTO ONLINE DATING by Lindsey Harrison

“There is so much hurt in this game of searching for a mate, of testing, trying. And you realize suddenly that you forgot it was a game, and turn away in tears. – Sylvia Plath

n a world where you can earn a college degree or buy just about anything online, where you can have 467 “friendsâ€? on Facebook, it only makes sense that you should be able to meet the love of your life online. Gone are the days of browsing dating sites, looking at pictures that may or may not be of the person they claim to be. Online dating sites are claiming to be using a scientiďŹ c approach when matching people up. They’re becoming more speciďŹ c, targeting a very distinct subset of people looking to ďŹ nd other like-minded individuals. Naturally, we at Snippetz felt it was about time someone checked into the domain of online dating, to see what’s out there and get a grip on the attraction of making a cyber connection.

ISSUE 583 • DECEMBER 31, 2012

WHAT IS ONLINE DATING? Online dating is pretty self-explanatory. People use the internet to connect with other individuals in order to develop a personal or romantic relationship. Most often, a user is required to provide a certain amount of personal information in order to determine a prospective match with other users. The information can be specific, such as gender or it can be more general such as age range rather than just age. The site uses that information to match users to other users that have specified those qualities as desirable.

‹‡ ‹‹‰

Most sites require a monthly membership fee and some offer free registration to entice new customers. Others are funded strictly through advertisements.

THE FIRST INTERNET DATING SITE In 1986, Matchmaker.com was founded, making it the oldest online dating site still in current use. The site was

As you probably guessed, those sites garner less interest than a general dating site simply because they don’t appeal to everyone…and that’s the way they like it. Naturally, the more mainstream sites have earned the top spots on the list of most popular dating sites for 2012.

created by Gregory Scott Smith of San Antonio, Texas in March 1983. Initially, it was a dial-up Bulletin Board System, which allowed users access only over a phone line using a modem. The point of the BBS was to digitize the standard cork bulletin board method of communication so that people could post messages and news or initiate a chat with another user completely through a computer connection.

Here’s a little bit about the top two sites, in order of decreasing popularity: • Match.com – Launched in 1995, this site says it has hundreds of thousands of members, representing 24 countries. The site provides matches based on religion, sexual orientation and age in order to narrow down the field if a member so desires. Match.com claims to have led to more dates, relationships and marriages than any other site. They also provide a free online magazine that provides tips and advice on dating. The downside is that, because of the large member base, there are a lot of foreign members that can’t necessarily be verified as legitimate. The match.com magazine warns members on how to stay safe when dating online such as when a member happens to be foreign and asks for financial information or sends a suspicious link to a third-party website.

Matchmaker.com required members to complete a questionnaire that was made of both multiple choice and essay questions, which cataloged the members’ interests and hobbies. When a member searched for a match through the site, the potential matches were ranked based on how many overall responses that member had in common with someone else’s profile. Members also had the opportunity to create a list of matches based on distance from their zip code to the potential match’s zip code.

THE WHO’S WHO OF DATING SITES Recently, dating sites are gearing more towards very specific types of people, interests or cultures. For example, there are sites specific to smokers looking to meet other smokers; people who enjoy vampires and blood; younger women looking for older, wealthy men; and African American people who enjoy “nerdy” things.

The site says they have helped millions of people “hook up,” and claims to be the “largest social network for singles and swingers looking for fun with no strings attached.” Don’t worry; the obvious irony that Adultfriendfinder.com is considered a “dating site” after making it so painfully clear that girls on this site (and apparently everyone else too) just want to have fun, is not lost on us at Snippetz, either.

NOT QUITE A DATING SITE, BUT STILL… While we’re on the topic of sites that may not really count as dating sites, let’s talk about CanDoBetter.com. This gem of a site was launched in 2009 and asks the age-old question: have you ever wondered whether other people think you can do better than your current lover? If so, then this site is for you! The idea behind the site is pretty obvious: members upload pictures of themselves and their current dating partner and other members get to pick which partner “can do better.” Now making snap judgments about other people based solely on how they look has gotten even easier. The site claims that receiving votes from complete strangers is more credible because the people voting aren’t worried about hurting your feelings.

SOMEWHERE ALONG THE WAY HELP A BROTHER By Guest Writer Clifford Sampier

he man ahead of me at the supermarket placed his items on the counter and watched as the Checker did her work. He laid down his money to pay for his groceries when the Checker said, “Sir, you don’t have enough money here.” Embarrassment swept over him. As he fumbled through his pockets looking for some more cash my mind raced back to a Christmas day in the 1960s. After church in Oklahoma my wife and our two children headed for New Mexico to have Christmas with my parents. I knew things were not exactly right with my cooling system but it was Christmas Day and we were going to Grandma’s house. Besides that, I didn’t have the money to fix the car so we headed west by faith. Less than 100 miles out of town the car began to heat up and soon was steaming hot. I pulled to the side of the road, raised the hood, and once the steam cleared I could see I had blown a gasket. There was nothing I could do.

got back into his car. Then rolling down his window he said, “Somewhere along the way, help a brother.” Standing on the side of the road I thanked him profusely. Curious to know, I asked him how long the inner-tube gasket would last. I can still hear his happy voice, “I don’t know, I’ve been driving with them for years.” He waved farewell and drove off with a “Merry Christmas!” We made it to Grandma’s house though a bit late but with no further problems.

I have never forgotten this kind stranger’s call to “somewhere along the way… help a brother.” His kindness expressed so many years ago caused me to reach into my pocket and lay down a $10 bill on the supermarket counter. I told the Checker to take what was necessary to pay for the man’s groceries.

DIET AND HEART HEALTH

We sat there for over an hour and watched a few cars go by but none bothered to stop and offer help. Even if I could limp my car back to town nothing would be open because it was Christmas. We were stranded. Then it happened. An old model dilapidated Buick pulled in behind us and a big black man with a face full of grin got out and approached me. “What’s wrong?” he asked. “Your car overheatin’?”

worldwide study has concluded that there really is a relationship between diet and the risk of cardiovascular disease for patients who are taking drugs for prevention of secondary events. More than 31,000 high-risk seniors in 40 countries were assessed for quality of diet. A higherquality diet resulted in a lower risk of recurring cardiovascular events in people age 55 and older who are already taking medication for cardiovascular disease or who have diabetes.

Once he looked under the hood he said, “We’ll brother, that ain’t serious.” He went to the back of his car and got a few tools and piece of inner-tube. He pulled the block off, scraped the old gasket off, molded the inner-tube where the factory made gasket once was, and bolted the block back in place.

“How much do I owe you?” I asked.

Here’s the big news: The risk of dying from a heart-related event was reduced by 35 percent. A healthy diet also meant a 14 percent lower risk for new heart attacks, a 28 percent reduction in risk for congestive heart failure and 19 percent cut in risk for stroke.

He replied, “Nothin’. It’s Christmas Day, ain’t it?” He smiled from ear to ear as he

HEALTHY WEIGHT-LOSS HABITS

F

or many people, a new year means new promises to live a healthier life. Losing weight is a common, but difficult, goal for many people. It’s easy to get frustrated when you don’t see results quickly or because you’re trying to do too many things at once. It is much easier to work on one or two new habits at a time. It normally takes 21 days to create and maintain a new habit. If you’re not accustomed to cooking a healthy meal at home, my recipe for Quick Italian Chicken With Tomatoes is a quick and easy way to prepare and enjoy a lowcalorie meal in minutes. Here is a list of eight healthy habits. Choose one or two you would like to work on. Once you have made a new habit, adopt another one. 1) Drink fat-free milk. For adequate calcium intake, 3 cups of milk per day is recommended. 3 cups whole milk -- 450 calories, 24 grams of fat 3 cups 2 percent milk -- 363 calories, 14 grams of fat 3 cups skim milk -- 258 calories, 1 gram of fat 2) Use a smaller plate. It sounds simple, but it works! People who use smaller plates take and eat less food. 3) Cover half of your plate with vegetables. Vegetables are packed with healthy nutrients and are generally low in calories. 4) For protein, think lean. Choosing lean cuts of meat helps decrease saturated fat. Lean cuts of beef and pork have the words “round” and “loin” in their description. In poultry, white meat is leaner than dark meat. Always avoid eating the skin of poultry. 5) Go light on the salad dressing. Salads are thought of as a “diet” food, yet two tablespoons of regular salad dressing can have 150 calories and 16 grams of fat. The same amount of a “light” variety has 60 calories and 4.5 grams of fat. Most salsa has no fat and very few calories. 6) Eat at the kitchen table. We eat more when we are distracted. If you sit at the table with no television you are less likely to overeat. 7) Eat slowly. It can take 20 minutes for

your body to register a sense of fullness. 8) Eat the fruit rather than drinking its juice. Whole fruit is more filling and has fewer calories. 1 orange -- 60 calories, 3 grams of fiber 1 cup orange juice -- 112 calories, less than 1 gram fiber (Additional information supplied by Tammy Roberts, MS, RD, LD, Nutrition and Health Education Specialist, Barton County, University of Missouri Extension.)

1. Heat olive oil over medium heat in a large, heavy skillet. Sprinkle chicken breasts evenly with salt, pepper and 1 tablespoon of the Italian Seasoning. Cook the chicken breasts on each side for 3 or 4 minutes, or until lightly browned. 2. Remove chicken from pan, place on a plate and cover with foil to keep warm. Add onions, garlic and remaining Italian Seasoning to pan. Cook for about 5 minutes, until onions are translucent. 3. Add tomatoes, nutmeg or ground cloves, and sugar substitute or agave to the pan. Scrape bottom of pan to loosen any bits of food. 4. Return chicken and any juices that have accumulated on the plate to the pan. Bring to boil, then reduce heat and simmer for about 10 minutes, until chicken is completely cooked through. MOMENTS IN TIME THE HISTORY CHANNEL

• On Jan. 6, 1759, a 26-year-old George Washington marries Martha Dandridge Custis. Historical documents have revealed that Martha may not have been the great love of Washington’s life. He wrote cryptic yet passionate love letters to Sally Fairfax, the wife of his friend George Fairfax. • On Jan. 1, 1863, a farmer named Daniel Freeman submits the first claim under the new Homestead Act for a property near Beatrice, Neb. By the 1890s, many homesteaders found that farming 160 acres of such dry land was nearly impossible. At least half of the original homesteaders abandoned their claims. • On Jan. 3, 1924, British archaeologist Howard Carter and his workers discover the solid-gold coffin holding the mummy of the boy-king Pharaoh Tutankhamen, preserved for more than 3,000 years. • On Jan. 5, 1945, Japanese pilots receive the first order to become kamikaze, meaning “divine windâ€? in Japanese. Most of Japan’s top pilots were dead, but youngsters

needed little training to take planes full of explosives and crash them into ships. At Okinawa, they sank 30 ships and killed almost 5,000 Americans. • On Jan. 4, 1965, in his State of the Union address, President Lyndon Johnson lays out for Congress a list of legislation needed to achieve his plan for a Great Society. His list included the creation of Medicare/Medicaid, Head Start, the Voting Rights Act and the Civil Rights Act. • On Dec. 31, 1972, Roberto Clemente, future Hall of Fame baseball player, is killed along with four others when the cargo plane in which he is traveling crashes off the coast of Puerto Rico. At the end of September, Clemente had gotten his 3,000th hit in the final game of the season for the Pittsburgh Pirates. • On Jan. 2, 1980, in response to the December 1979 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, President Jimmy Carter asks the Senate to postpone action on the SALT II nuclear weapons treaty. Carter feared that the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan could lead to the USSR gaining control over much of the world’s oil supplies. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

CERTAIN POLYPS RAISE COLON CANCER RISK DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Please help. I have had two colonoscopies with 10 polyps found -- half and half, both kinds. I noticed on my medical bill that I am at high risk. I was told that some new medicine might be available soon. I’m very scared. What could help me? -- R.H. ANSWER: A polyp is a growth of cells projecting from the lining of a structure. In this case, the structure is the colon. Close to 90 percent of polyps do not become cancers. Fifty percent of the population older than 60 has at least one polyp. Ten percent of polyps are adenomatous polyps, ones with a potential of becoming cancer. I take it that some of your polyps were of this variety, and that’s why you are at “high risk.” Having those polyps removed eliminates the present cancer risk. Adenomatous polyp size is one factor involved in judging these polyps’ threat. Those larger than 2 cm (0.8 inches) have a 40 percent chance of transforming into cancer. The micro-

scopic appearance of these polyps’ cells is given the designation of high-grade or low-grade. High-grade cells also increase the risk of cancer. Actually, you are sitting pretty. You’ve had all your polyps removed. The fact that some of yours put you into the category of high risk only means that the doctor will work out for you a schedule for future colonoscopies. Those scope exams will disclose if any new polyps have formed. You are less likely to develop colon cancer than are people who have never had such an exam. I don’t know about the medicine you speak of. Cutting back on red and processed meats (hot dogs and other luncheon meats), losing weight, decreasing the fat in your diet, cutting back on alcohol consumption, increasing the amount of fruit and vegetables you eat and increasing dietary fiber are things that diminish the likelihood of colon cancer. I have to be candid. Some authorities say these changes are not as protective as they’re made out to be. They are, however, conducive to good general health. The booklet on colon cancer explains this common ailment in greater detail. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 505W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

New DVD Releases for Week of December 31, 2012 PICKS OF THE WEEK “Frankenweenie” (PG) -- Victor Frankenstein is a boy who loves his dog, Sparky. When Sparky is tragically killed in an accident, Victor is distraught. So Victor gets the idea to stitch up the dead dog and use science to resurrect his best friend. You see, Victor is an oddball character in a creepy, stop-motion animated, black-and-white world created by Tim Burton. This story is sort of a pet project for Bur-

ton. He made a live-action version of this same idea in the ‘80s when he worked at Disney -- it didn’t get much of a release. With experience, lots of money and the creative control that comes with making lots of money, Burton makes “Frankenweenie” a clever, creepy flick with an entertaining escalation. “Dredd” (R) -- In the grim, gray future, much of the U.S. East Coast is combined into a single, crime-ridden mega-city. The Judges are supercops with authority to be judge, jury and executioner all at once. Dredd (celebrated B-level action star Karl Urban) is the best Judge in the force -- he excels at deciding to kill bad guys and then killing them right away. In this movie, Dredd and his rookie sidekick get trapped in a giant super-slum full of drug pushers. It doesn’t have the legendary lousiness of 1995’s “Judge Dredd,” so you might not get as many laughs. This new Dredd has a dif-

ferent sense of humor, and enough to add a few chuckles to the ceaseless violence. There also are plenty of nifty visual flourishes (and it’s convenient that the movie’s fictional drug makes users see the world in slow-motion.) “Hit & Run” (R) -- This is one of those movies with just a godawful mess of plot, but there’s lots of snappy dialogue, car chases and on-screen chemistry to keep it going. Charlie (Dax Shepard, writer and codirector) is a former getaway driver, now in witness protection. His girlfriend, Annie (Kristen Bell) is beautiful and smart and unaware of his past. Bradley Cooper shows up as Charlie’s former partner in crime, come to take revenge (that must happen a lot).

DOG OF THE WEEK “Stolen” (R) -- A man with a violent past finds that his daughter has been taken by

12

bad guys, and he must go on a whirlwind tour of butt-kicking to bring her back. Too bad this isn’t Liam Neeson’s “Taken” or “Taken 2,” because either of them would be way better than this lump. Nicolas Cage plays a thief who has to steal $10 million to get his daughter back from her kidnapper -Cage’s former partner in crime. Cage tries to add a few touches, but it’s a boring movie and he knows it.

The song was written by Dan Penn, who also wrote “The Letter” for the group, as well as “Do Right Woman, Do Right Man” for Aretha Franklin. 3. The lyrics are a tribute to four assassinated icons: Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Jr., John F. Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy. Dion recorded the song in 1968. 4. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) The Moon Child’s post-holiday letdown soon lifts as you begin to get back into your comfortable routine. Someone from your past extends a surprise bid to reconnect. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You’ve been the ultimate social Lion over the holidays. Now it’s time to relax and recharge your energy so you can be at your best when you pounce on that new project. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A relationship could be moving in a direction you might not want to follow. Step back for a better overview of the situation. You might be surprised at what you see.

13

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A longtime friendship could take a romantic turn early in the new year. While this pleases your passionate side, your logical self might want to go slow. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Someone might make a surprising disclosure about a trusted friend or workplace colleague. Stay cool and reserve judgment until you get more facts. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) You might think you’ve found what you’ve been looking for. But appearances can be deceiving. Don’t act on your discovery until you know more about it. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) You’re no doubt anxious for that confusing situation to be cleared up. But don’t press for a quick resolution or you might overlook some vital facts. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Now that your holiday distractions are easing, you need to apply yourself to getting those unfinished tasks done so you can begin a new project with a clean slate. BORN THIS WEEK: People respect both your wisdom and your deep sense of loyalty and compassion.

aying off a mortgage early can be as easy as making an extra principal payment each month. That money goes to the end of the mortgage term, and cancels the interest that would be due then. Making extra payments, especially early in a mortgage, can have stunning results, with years shaved off the length of the mortgage. When it comes to paying off a mortgage early, however, there are those who are strongly on one side of the fence or the other. While some claim it’s a great idea, others say it’s not. Here are the arguments on both sides. Don’t pay off a mortgage early: • You’ll lose the mortgage interest deduction on your taxes. • You’ll miss out on the low mortgage rates available now. • You may be hit with pre-payment penalties. (Read the fine print on your loan papers, especially if you have a refinance. Does it say that you’ll incur a penalty if you pay off early?) • You won’t have spare cash for emergencies if you spend it all on extra

• The mortgage is typically the largest monthly payment a consumer makes. Once the mortgage is paid off, you’ll have the room to pursue other financial interests, including putting it all in savings or paying off other debt. • You’ll own your home. As long as you keep up with taxes, insurance and repairs, the home is yours. The truth is that your individual situation will indicate whether it’s good for you to pay off a mortgage. Some thoughts to consider: If you hope to retire at a certain time and know your retirement income will make it hard for you to continue making mortgage payments, it makes sense to pay off the mortgage while your income is still adequate to do so. If you can save for your children’s college, put money into savings and still put extra money on your mortgage, it makes sense to pay early. Go online to mortgage calculators and do a few “what if” scenarios to see how many years can be shaved off your mortgage with varying extra payments. Even an extra $50 will have visible results. At the time of this writing, it’s being discussed whether to cancel the mortgage interest tax deduction on the Schedule A. Keep an eye on this. Your real savings from having a mortgage interest deduction depend on your tax bracket. at better, exercise more, and keep better tax records. Not a bad list. There are several acceptable IRS techniques for maintaining your records. Each has its advantages, and you might find success in using a mixture depending on your needs and your attention to detail. Credit Card: If you use a credit card for your tax related purchases such as business expenses, rental property repairs

and unreimbursed employee business expenses (job-related) then you can simply jot down on the credit card statement the nature of the expense. In most cases such as OfficeMax you can throw the receipt away since the merchant and the business nature is fairly obvious. Envelopes: This is old fashioned, but still works well. Many taxpayers will label a handful of envelopes and toss receipts in each envelope depending on the purchase. Shoeboxes work too, but they are really old fashioned- then again, they might give you a good excuse to buy some more shoes. Scanner: This is the best invention ever. Well, not really, but who wants paper or envelopes or shoe boxes? A receipt or invoice is still the best way of proving

your tax deduction, by far. So, each time you make a purchase, a contribution or receive a medical bill, note the business connection if necessary, and then scan it, and then forget it. PDF Printer: This allows you to print anything to a PDF file. For example, if you wanted to save an electronic copy of a web page that is dynamic (such as your banking dashboard or home page) you cannot just save the web page contents to your computer. But if you print the web page and choose your PDF printer, the information on your computer screen will now be saved as a PDF. Very cool. Backups: If you end up using an electronic archive you absolutely need to invest into Google docs, Carbonite or similar online backup service.
