airy tales have them. Disney movies have them. Even Sci-Fi movies have them. Mythical beasts of all kinds have been around for thousands of years, most clearly evidenced in ancient Greek mythology. It would be nearly impossible to list all the mythical creatures that have cropped up over time. That’s not to say some people haven’t tried. We at Snippetz are a little less ambitious: we’ve rounded up some of the more popular ones to give our readers a sampling of the world’s most feared and revered creatures throughout history. And here they are, in no particular order.

Mythical Creatures... Continued from Page 1
The unicorn is mentioned in historical writings in several different places including the Hebrew Bible and the King James Version of the Bible. This lends credence to the idea that this mythological animal was not considered a myth at all. It was fairly common for unicorns to appear in writings by historians, physicians, poets and other writers until the 19th century.
SPHINX The sphinx is a creature that is said to have the body of a lion and the head of either a male or female human. Sometimes it is depicted with the wings of a bird as was common in Greek mythology. Conflicting ideas regarding the nature of the sphinx occur throughout the world, with the Greeks believing it to be a “demon of destruction and bad luck.” Others believed it to be a gentler, more benevolent creature.
Belief in the unicorn was so strong that Otto Von Guericke, mayor of Magdeburg, Germany claimed to have found prehistoric unicorn bones at Unicorn Cave in the German Harz Mountains in 1663. His “unicorn” consisted of fossils from a woolly rhinoceros and a mammoth with a narwhal horn. It only had two legs. Apparently the construction of the unicorn was so well done that Von Guericke convinced several non-believers of their existence.
Often portrayed as a guardian to the entrances of temples and cities, the sphinx is said to have posed a riddle to anyone wishing to pass. If the riddle was correctly answered, the person was allowed entrance. But if the traveler answered incorrectly, the sphinx killed and ate them. The riddle is said to be as follows: “Which creature walks on four legs in the morning, two legs in the afternoon and three legs in the evening?”
SIRENS Said to be “femmes fatales,” sirens are seductive creatures who use their beautiful singing voices to lure sailors to shipwreck on the rocks surrounding the coast of their island. Sirens are said to be part woman part bird, occasionally portrayed
The earliest-known statue of the sphinx was found in Turkey (although the exact location is up for debate) and is dated to be about 9500 B.C. However, probably the most recognizable depiction is the Great Sphinx of Giza in Egypt. Other portrayals of the sphinx have been credited to India, the Philippines, Sri Lanka and Thailand.
with wings, bird legs, bird bodies and the like, depending on whose writings you are reading. Sometimes they are said to play different musical instruments such as the harp or the flute. Sirens date back to ancient Greek mythology, making an appearance in Homer’s Odyssey when Odysseus encounters them on his journey. He wanted to know what they sang about in their songs, so Odysseus had his crew plug their ears with beeswax and tie him to the mast of the ship. He ordered them to leave him there and not to untie him, no matter how much he insisted on being released. Odysseus heard their songs, begged profusely to be released, but eventually he and his crew made it past the sirens. Later writers said that sirens were fated to die if anyone ever successfully fended off their advances after hearing their “siren song” (and yes, that is where the phrase came from) and that they subsequently threw themselves into the ocean to drown.

Mythical Creatures... Continued from Page 2
MERMAIDS Possibly conjuring images of a red-haired Disney character singing alongside a sassy Jamaican crab about her desire to be human, mermaids are said to be beautiful half-human-half-fish creatures. Most often, they have the head and torso of a human with the lower body of a fish. They are often described as helpful, coming to the rescue of sailors who have fallen overboard, but sometimes are depicted as bringing on storms to cause shipwrecks. Mermaids have been popular characters in both art and literature throughout history, beginning in 1000 B.C. The Assyrian story describes the goddess Atargatis who fell in love with a mortal shepherd but accidentally kills him. She was so ashamed of what she had done that she jumped into a lake, intending to take the form of a fish. It was said that her beauty was so great that the waters couldn’t hide it and she ended up in the form of a mermaid. “The Little Mermaid” fairy tale, written by Hans Christian Andersen and published in 1837, tells of the youngest daughter of the Sea King who falls in love with a human prince. She visits a sea witch to exchange her tongue for legs so she can live on land. While the prince finds her washed up on the beach, he doesn’t end up marrying her. Naturally, Disney’s version does not include the part where the mermaid must stab the prince in order to return to the sea. In both versions though, she eventually ends up a human.
No, this is not about the city in Arizona. The mythical bird phoenix is often portrayed as an eagle or similar bird of prey. It is associated with renewal, as only one phoenix is said to be able to exist at any given time. Roughly every 1,000 years, the existing phoenix is said to build a funeral pyre of cinnamon or other such spices with pleasing aromas so that it can be burned to ashes. From those ashes, the new phoenix is said to rise and begin its 1,000-year reign.

While the phoenix can be found in several ancient mythologies such as Greek, Egyptian and Indian, it is generally agreed that the phoenix’s origins begin in ancient Egypt. It is often said to have a close relationship with the sun and the sun-god Ra.

The phoenix is also often associated with royalty, possibly due to an etymological explanation put forth by archbishop Isidore of Seville who lived in the 6th and 7th centuries. He said that the name of the phoenix came from its purple-red hue. This idea stuck, which is illustrated in the reference to the color purple as the “Phoenician” color. The phoenix was considered “the royal bird.”

Mythical Creatures...
There is no exact designation when the idea of the centaur came about, but pieces of Mycenaean pottery suggest that it originated in the Bronze Age. The leading theory is that cultures who weren’t familiar with horses and their use as a mode of transportation for humans mistook riders and their horses as one being: the centaur. Certain tribes of Thessaly claimed that their horse breeds were descendants of centaurs and the tribesmen themselves were said to be kinsmen of the centaurs in mythology.

In Greek mythology, the centaur Chiron is the complete opposite. He was said to be a great healer, tutor and astrologer, although he is said not to be related to other centaurs that were born of sun and raincloud. We Leading-Edge Boomers don’t especially want to move to a seniors-only residence where we’re surrounded by other seniors. We’ve been active, and we want to stay active. We’ll tend to do more ordering online or having items delivered by UPS and FedEx. Boomers tend to live in the suburbs and want to stay in our own homes. If we do move, it will probably be to a place where
The Silent Generation will consider warmer climates and co-housing “village” areas where services are brought to us. There will be those who prefer the hubbub of downtowns with a mix of young and old, but with culture, libraries, walk-friendly streets and stores in easy reach. Both groups might choose from college towns (to live near children and take advantage of on-campus activities), manufactured housing, co-housing and group living (multi-generational), and “affinity” retirement communities (bringing people together based on shared interests). At some point, however, driving will become an issue. Where do you want to be when that happens? Before driving becomes a question in anyone’s mind, consider taking a seniors’ driving class, and maybe a refresher every year. Get a head start on knowing the physical changes that happen to all of us that can impact driver safety. Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Write to her in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. New DVD Releases for Week of January 14, 2013 PICKS OF THE WEEK “Cosmopolis” (R) -- In the near-ish future, a 28-year-old billionaire (Robert Pattinson) takes a limo ride through New York in search of a plot. Pattinson plays a slick, detached, financial wiz who says a lot of things that sound cool, even if they don’t mean much. As his limo glides through the grim world of future-NYC, we see that the majority of people live in poverty -- and they all want him dead.
(Juno Temple), the worst teenager ever in the most desolate town ever. She’s acidtongued, and smart enough to know that she’s always making poor decisions. She gets involved with some local punks who torture animals for fun, among other awful distractions. Sitting through this movie, you want to just get in a car and drive away from the whole experience.
It really is a fascinating movie that seems like it has a lot to say about society, the future and nature of desire. Too bad it’s all so rushed and awkward. Characters tend to appear and disappear with no explanation. People seem to ignore each other during conversations and just go on saying vague, semi-philosophical lines. “Red Lights” (R) -- Sigourney Weaver and her assistant go around exposing frauds who pretend to be psychics and faith healers. Robert Di Nero plays a blind psychic who supposedly killed an investigator with his mind powers. The movie tries to make it interesting to watch smart people disproving magic, but it’s not. It is kinda fun to see all of the acting talent on screen going head to head. If you can make it to the end, there may be a cool twist. “Little Birds” (R) -- This movie about the feeling of emptiness puts good visuals to the emotion, but falls flat in terms of keeping you interested. The story follows Lilly
DOG OF THE WEEK “The Trouble with Bliss” (PG-13) -- The movie is about a guy named Morris Bliss (Michael C. Hall) who passively wends his way through his quirky life as an unemployed man-child. First off, can we all just agree that movie titles should be forever banned from including the name of the main character in a clever way? “Good Will Hunting” was a good movie, and not because the protagonist was named Will Hunting.
6
Get it? The guy’s name is Bliss, which also means happiness, and he’s troubled, even though his life’s not that bad. It’s the trouble with Bliss. It’s a perfect indicator of how much forced quirkiness is in the film. Don’t be fooled into renting this extra-long sitcom episode that calls itself a movie. Perhaps I’m being too harsh because of that irritating title, but for real, you’re not missing much if you skip this one.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You might be hurt by a colleague’s harsh criticism. But don’t let it shake your confidence in what you’re trying to do. A more positive aspect starts to appear by week’s end.
SPORTS QUIZ ANSWERS 1. He did it in 349 consecutive games.
TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You’re torn between your sensible self and the part of you that enjoys acquiring lovely things. Best advice: Wait for an end-of-month sale, and then buy something wonderful.
2. Lefty Gomez pitched six innings in the 1935 game. 3. Five (1970, ‘71, ‘94, ‘95 and ‘97). 4. The New York Knicks, in 1999. 5. Wayne Gretzky (1.921 points per game), Mario Lemieux (1.883) and Mike Bossy (1.497).
GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your artistic side has practical applications this week, such as redecorating your home or redesigning your personal stationery. Whatever you do, someone special will like it.
6. The U.S. had never lost to Jamaica. 7. Lamon Brewster, in 2004.
FLASH BACK ANSWERS 1. Aretha Franklin. Many female performers were left out in the beginning due to the rule that performers had to have released their first record 25 years earlier. 2. “Let’s Spend the Night Together,” after their 1966 hit song. It was filmed at their concerts in New Jersey and Arizona. 3. Emmylou Harris. The song tells the tale of a mother who finally leaves a cold husband after her children are grown. 4. Gregg Allman, of the Allman Brothers. She filed for divorce nine days later, but stuck it out until 1979. Their joint album, “Two the Hard Way,” was a commercial disaster. 5. “It’s Still Rock and Roll to Me,” by Billy Joel in 1980, the response of an older musician to the new, younger music styles.
CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You could be drawn into a problem ‘twixt friends or family members. Best bet: Ask the questions that go to the heart of the matter, then get them all together for a group hug. LEO (July 23 to August 22) As much as you love being the center of attention, your big Lion’s heart impels you to share the spotlight with a colleague who helped you with that well-praised project. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your eagerness to act on a challenge is wisely tempered early in the week by a lack of necessary information. Things begin to clear up during the weekend.
7
SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Things don’t go completely as planned this week. But enjoy the surprises, even if you have to adjust your schedule. Some of them could be quite delightful. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Making choices is usually easy for straight-shooting Archers. But a new development could deflect your aim. Try to put off decisions until you know more. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) While part of you might prefer taking a more familiar path, let your more daring and -- admit it -- super-curious self see what the unexplored has to offer. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Those nasty types have slithered back under the rocks and present no more problems. Now’s the time to move ahead on that promising new relationship. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A new offer could clear up that lingering money problem. Also, a more confident attitude on your part might well help get that personal situation back on track. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of turning chaos into order. You’re also generous with your help for those who seek it.

Jefferson officially asked Congress for $2,500, though some sources indicate the expedition ultimately cost closer to $50,000. • On Jan. 14, 1875, theologian, musician, philosopher and Nobel Prize-winning physician Albert Schweitzer is born in UpperAlsace, Germany. The U.S. eventually settled some 500 claims by residents whose health was adversely affected.

Nick-Snips
DON’T “CELL” YOURSELF SHORT By Nicholas James Yanez
E
very Nick-Snip is a fact-based article. It is happening or has happened somewhere, but is being vastly underreported. Only here, at Snippetz, will the truth finally be revealed… Imagine you’re twenty-seven years old. It’s more difficult for some of us than others. For those far past this landmark, it will be difficult to put yourself in the shoes of a twenty-something in today’s day and age. You’re more prone to imagine being twenty-seven years old in the decade that you actually were. If you are far
younger than twenty-seven (say, eleven) then it’s both unlikely and commendable that you are reading this article; kudos, child. One could argue that today, a twenty-seven year old is in his prime years. To make this proposition more evident, I’ll tell you that the following young man lives in New York City. So when imagining yourself in the shoes of this individual, you may find your brain conjuring up images of fresh thinking, the internet, seduction, and basic tool kits. In this instance, the case of one Nadav Nirenberg, you would be exactly right. Nadav, the twenty-seven year old in question, started his New Year like any one else, I imagine – expecting things to get better. Unfortunately, as they say, the night is darkest just before the dawn. Our young hero started off 2013 on the wrong foot when he left his phone in a cab on New Years Eve. After nearly a week without the
cell, most young men would just muster up the cash for a new phone - Not this guy. Nirenberg had recently downloaded a dating app for his smart-phone. By accessing the account via internet, he noticed that someone had been contacting several females over the app. That’s when Nadav became a genius, if only for a moment. By using a Google Image of an attractive young woman, Nirenberg created a fake profile on the dating website. He then contacted his real/cell phone holder’s account saying he wanted to “meet up”. The culprit quickly replied, accepting the enticing offer and giving Nadav his address. The next day, he traveled to the address of the phone thief carrying only $20 and a hammer (just in case). He told the perpetrator to give him back his phone in exchange for the $20 bill. The man obliged and soon after, disappeared (not literally, but how cool would that be?) On the surface, one might call
10
this a brilliantly executed plan by the young man. It was nice, sure, but why did he give the man $20? This is maddening! Wasn’t the entire point of this venture to avoid paying for another phone? Didn’t you bring a hammer to avoid shenanigans? If you’re not in a blue collar industry (and a career description of Jazz Trombonist highly indicates you are, indeed, not) then there is really only one good use for hammers; to intimidate the “perp”. Why even delve into Hammer-bringing behavior if you intend to bargain with the guy? Not to mention this man possible gave you a lifetime ‘creeperstatus’ on your new dating site. You’re only twenty-seven man, and you’re name is really hard to pronounce. You’re in no position to get that label. Despite that, it was an entertaining and valiant effort by Nadav (albeit, an effort tainted by personal fraud). Nirenberg got his phone back with no damage done. He does not plan to press charges.

THE KITCHEN DIVA By Angela Shelf Medearis
HELP FOR THE COMMON COLD
L
ike many people, I try different methods to avoid catching a cold or flu during the winter. Despite my best efforts, I often get a little “under the weather” during the month of January. This year I’ve decided to work on ways to boost my immune system before the worst part of the cold and flu season hits. “One thing to remember is that simple diet choices can boost our immune system,” said Susan Mills-Gray, Nutrition and Health Education specialist with University of Missouri Extension. Here are a variety of ways to help your immune system to work at peak performance. • Get plenty of liquids to help prevent viruses and bacteria from taking up residence in your body. According to Dr. Riva Rahl of the Cooper Clinic in Dallas, “the mucus in your nose is actually one of the key physical barriers that keep germs out of your body. When you’re not well hydrated, it dries up and doesn’t provide that protection.” • Protein is a building block for a healthy immune system. Choose lean red meats, poultry and fish, dried beans and soy. You also can choose protein-rich plant sources with heart-healthy fat, like peanut butter and nuts. • Choose foods rich in vitamins C and E. These two antioxidant-rich vitamins protect cells -- including those of your immune system -- from damage by toxins in the environment. Choose citrus fruits/juices, melons, mangoes, kiwi, peppers, tomatoes, berries, broccoli, cabbage, sweet/white potatoes, winter squash, leafy greens, almonds, hazelnuts, peanut butter, sunflower seeds, safflower oil, whole grains and fortified cereals several times a day. • Eat probiotic foods to help build up the good bacteria in the intestines. These bacteria play a role in helping fend off illnesses. Any fermented food is rich in this type of good bacteria, so choose yogurt, sauerkraut, tofu, brine-treated pickles and aged cheese at least daily. • Add a zinc-rich food to your daily diet to increase the production of white blood cells in your body. Research shows that this effect can reduce the number of days you’ll suffer from a cold. Some foods rich
in zinc are yogurt, lean red meat, poultry and fish, almonds, pumpkin seeds and fortified cereals.

1. Bring a medium-size pot of water to a boil. Add the shrimp and boil until cooked through, about 3 minutes. Use a slotted spoon to transfer shrimp to colander. Rinse under cold water, drain and set shrimp aside. Cook rice noodles in the same pot of boiling water until tender, 2 to 3 minutes. Drain, rinse under cold water and drain again. Set aside. 2. Combine broth with lemon grass, fish sauce, oil, red pepper flakes, lime zest, chili pepper and ginger in a wok or soup pot. Bring to a simmer and cook for 10 minutes. Strain or use a slotted spoon to remove lemon grass pieces. Stir in lemon and lime juice. 3. Evenly distribute rice noodles, shrimp, mushrooms and cilantro between 8 heated soup bowls. Pour broth, and sprinkle cilantro, parsley and green onions evenly between each bowl, if desired, and serve. Makes 8 servings. USE GIFT CARDS BEFORE THEY’RE WORTHLESS
D
id you get gift cards for Christmas? If so, did you slide them into your wallet or the bottom of your purse, thinking to save them for later? While gift cards are like cash in that they allow you to buy things, they’re not like cash in that they often come with restrictions. The Gift Card Federal Law Act, passed in 2010, covered a number of problems with gift cards, but it did not cover all possible contingencies. For example, if a card hasn’t been used within a year, unlimited charges can be deducted from the card. An average fee is $3 per month. In at least two states, Tennessee and Maine, state laws are in conflict with federal laws. In these states, cards that haven’t been used within two years are considered “unclaimed property.” In some other states, it’s three years. In yet other states, it’s against the law to sell gift cards with any expiration date. When the property is “unclaimed,” the value reverts to the store. If you have an old, unused card, consult your state’s laws for specifics. Cards good for brick-and-mortar stores aren’t necessarily good for that store’s

If you have a store-specific card and the business goes bankrupt, you’re out of luck. The card itself can expire even if it still has a cash amount available on it. You might have to pay to have the card replaced. “Gift cards” that really aren’t gift cards aren’t protected under the new rules. These can include loyalty or promotional cards that aren’t labeled or sold as gift cards. On the positive side: Any expiration date must show on the card or package. Charges cannot be deducted for one year on any inactive card, and then not more than once in a month. Your best bet: If any packaging came with your gift card, read the fine print. If you were given the receipt with the card, hold on to it. If you lose the card, that receipt will show the date and amount of purchase. Use the card soon. Spend all of the money on it. If it’s a reloadable card and you add money to it, keep track of the transaction and know when it will expire. WHY KEEP TAX RECORDS BESIDES RECEIPTS?
proving the money is actually loan payments to you and not income.
O
ther than the obvious charitable contribution or medical receipt, there are other tax related records that need to be kept. Identify Sources of Income: This can seem silly since most taxpayers don’t want to prove additional income for the IRS to simply tax. However, certain income sources might be non-taxable. For example, if you lent money to your son to buy his first car and you’re depositing the payments, the IRS will consider this income unless you keep good records
Property Basis: This is absolutely critical, and the one most overlooked reasons for maintaining good records. The most challenging property is stocks- the IRS and the SEC now require brokerage firms to maintain cost or purchase history information, and report this on your tax forms. They also require that this information transfers with the stock if you move securities to another brokerage firm. This doesn’t always work. The classic example is a person who buys stock through an employee stock purchase program, holds onto it for twenty years, retires, moves the stock into another account, and then sells it. mation, the gains and subsequent taxes are impossible to accurately compute. In the past we’ve reconstructed cost information through Yahoo! Finance, which works most of the time, but good recordkeeping can prevent this exercise Homes and other real estate such as rental properties can also prove problematic. Sure, you have the HUD or closing statement from the purchase, and you’ll get another one for the sale. But improvements to the property such as a new roof, appliances, furnace, additions, landscaping, etc. will all add to your property basis (cost) and can reduce your tax consequence. Of course, you get a big exemption for the sale of your primary residence, but rental properties and other real estate investments don’t enjoy this exemption. Bummer.
