WHAT’S IN A NAME? SNIPPETZ INVESTIGATES

THE ORIGINS OF BRAND NAMES by Lindsey Harrison

n our overly materialistic world, brand name items are becoming a ridiculous necessity in order to fit in. In high school, it’s likely that you felt the judging eyes of your fellow students when you were found wearing (gasp!) an off-brand pair of shoes or jacket. And even now, certain coffee cups are even sold sans coffee in grocery stores, indicating the picture on the cup is more important than what the cup holds. Which begs the question: Is the name the most important part of the product? If so, is there some magical formula that makes certain brand names successful while others simply fall flat? Snippetz looks into where some of these brand names came from and maybe a flash of brilliance will hit you while reading this and you’ll come up with the next big brand name!

The truth of the matter is that the name is a mash-up of one of the original founder’s first and last names. But we need to start from the beginning. Adolf and Rudolf Dassler were German brothers who followed in their father’s footsteps in the shoe manufacturing career path in the early 1920s. Adolf started up his own company and shortly after, Rudolf joined him in the business. By the 1930s, the Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory was doing well and was the brand of choice for American Jesse Owens when he won four gold medals at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin.

Anyone who’s studied Greek mythology, however briefly, will find this one easy. Nike is the Greek goddess of victory so it’s easy to see why a sporting goods company would choose the name. But did you know that the company, established in 1964 by Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight, was originally called Blue Ribbon Sports? After about 14 years of operation, the company went to its employees and asked them to make suggestions for a new name. Jeff Johnson suggested Nike and (obviously) it was chosen. So on May 30, 1978, Blue Ribbon Sports became Nike, Inc.

It could also have been a remark Adolf made when the two families were once again cooped up together in Adolf’s bomb shelter in 1943; apparently, he was remarking about the bombings in Berlin and said, “The dirty “#@%&*’s” are back again.”

Either way, the brothers parted ways on shaky ground, splitting the company in half. Adolf turned his half into Adidas in 1949, taking the nickname from Adolf (Adi) and putting it with the first three letters of his last name. And so Adi Dassler became Adidas. Rudolf took his half and formed Ruda using the Both Dassler men joined the Nazi same concept with his names. was manufacturing running shoes and had the idea to create a spiked running shoe. His business grew and he brought his sons to work with him, founding the J.W. Foster and Sons Company in 1895. Skip ahead about 63 years to Foster’s grandsons Joe and Jeff. The pair was running the company by then and decided to rename it Reebok, after a type of African gazelle. The Afrikaan spelling is actually rhebok, but the dictionary in which they found the name was a South African edition and spelled it differently…and thus, Reebok was born.

PEPSI Drugstore owner Caleb Bradham originally called Pepsi “Brad’s Drink” when he introduced it in 1893. Hoping to have created a fountain drink that tasted good, increased energy and helped the digestive process, Bradham later renamed it Pepsi Cola. He was referencing the digestive enzyme pepsin and the kola nuts that he used in the recipe. It was advertised as a delicious and healthful drink, which is not exactly how healthcare professionals would describe it today.

SENIOR MOBILE DENTAL COMES TO TRI-LAKES AREA

Record Attendance at our Quarterly Member Luncheon!

For the third event in a row, we have broken our record for the number of attendees at our Quarterly Member Luncheon at Texas Roadhouse on January 30. We are excited to see this happening, because it means more and more of our members and non-members are getting involved in the activities happening through the Chamber for the Tri-Lakes area. We look forward to seeing our membership grow and being able to continually support the community.

Monument, CO; February 8, 2013. Senior Mobile Dental and Tri-Lakes Health Advocacy Partnership (HAP) announced today a new health service collaboration to bring affordable dental care to low-income senior citizens in the Tri-Lakes area. “The Tri-Lakes Health Advocacy Partnership is pleased to join with Senior Mobile Dental in bringing this new dental service to the Tri-Lakes area” according to Ted Rinebarger, HAP Board President. He added that “this new oral health program reflects HAP’s continued commitment to serving senior members of our community.” Senior Mobile Dental, a Colorado Springs based nonprofit, has a state contract through the Old Age Pension (OAP) Dental Assistance Program to provide dental services to low income seniors. Senior Mobile Dental transports their portable dental equipment to community locations convenient to seniors, such as senior centers, assisted living facilities or community centers. In these familiar surroundings, qualified seniors receive professional dental services. Dental services include dental exams, preventive cleanings, dentures and partials, denture repair, fillings, and tooth extractions. Seniors who qualify for funding are aged 60 and older, and have a Medicaid number or they qualified for the OAP Dental Assistance Program. Other seniors can receive the services of the Senior Mobile Dental program at a greatly reduced fee schedule. Arrangements for this important new HAP/Senior Mobile Dental collaboration for Tri-Lakes seniors are being finalized, with dental services planned to begin March 6, 2013 out of the Tri-Lakes Senior Citizens Center located at the Lewis-Palmer High School campus. Phone requests for dental appointments can be made directly to Senior Mobile Dental at (719) 310-3315.

his season’s flu just isn’t going away. It’s getting worse. And according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, those requiring the most hospitalizations from the flu are seniors age 65 and older. The most common underlying medical conditions include cardiovascular disease, obesity, lung disease and metabolic disorders.

•Garnishments •Foreclosure •Harassment

Right on the heels of this bad news, however, a national network of caregivers has published a list of suggestions for avoiding the flu. If anyone knows about the flu, it’s the Visiting Angels (www.visitingangels.com)! They’ve created a “Fight the Flu Kit,” and their list makes sense:

» Free Consultation » Payment Plans Available

• Paper towels: Use these in the bathroom or at the kitchen sink instead of hand towels, which can harbor germs. • A forehead thermometer: No need to

• Lysol spray: Use at home on doorknobs, handles and light switches (spray on a paper towel first). Visiting Angels recommends doing this once a week. I vote for once a day. The virus can live up to 48 hours on plastic and stainless steel. • Hand soap: not necessarily antibacterial. • Hand sanitizer wipes: Use on everything you touch out in public, like shopping-cart handles and seats, door knobs, sinks, telephones and library books. If you can’t sanitize it, wash your hands as soon as you can. (I hate to say it, but this might be the time to avoid libraries.) With a little luck and a lot of common sense, we can get through this season without getting the flu!

HERPES OUTBREAKS LESSEN OVER TIME DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Please, give me all the information possible about herpes. I am a carrier. -- D.N. ANSWER: I take it you’re interested in genital herpes -- herpes simplex virus-2, HSV-2. The first encounter with the virus leads to an outbreak of tiny, painful blisters on red patches on the genital skin. Fever, headache, muscle pain and pain on urination often are also experienced with a first outbreak. Recurrent attacks are not as severe. Fever, headache and muscle pain do not accompany subsequent outbreaks, but the skin signs are painful. The first year of infection is a year of more-frequent outbreaks. After that, they come less often. If a person is subject to many outbreaks, that person can suppress them by taking Zovirax, Famvir or Valtrex at the first inklings that an outbreak is about to take place. For recurrence after recurrence, a person can go on daily doses of these medicines to keep outbreaks in check. Once infected, a person stays infected for life. That person is a carrier. Transmission is a huge problem. Even when a person has no signs of an outbreak, he or she can pass the virus to a partner. Therefore, all sexual partners should be told about the infection. Condoms, while not 100 percent protective, afford a major degree of safety. When a visible outbreak takes place, the infected person ought not to engage in sexual contact. You are not alone. ANSWER: The shots won’t hurt you. However, you need them only if you have a proven B-12 deficiency. At one time it was a widespread but not endorsed practice to give people shots of vitamin B-12 to energize them. It’s a practice that never should have been started.

TRI-LAKES PREMIER ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE CENTER

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My mother made all her children chew their food at least 25 times. She claimed that it helped food digest. I gave this up when I left home at 18. Is there any evidence that chewing that number of times aids digestion? -- H.H.

ANSWER: The object of chewing is to reduce the size of food so it can be swallowed easily and to mix saliva with the food for the same reason. Saliva starts the digestive process. I have never heard that a prescribed number of chews is necessary to accomplish these goals.

HOW DO YOU EXPRESS ANGER? Part 3 of 3

W

By Dr. Ron Ross

hat is your preferred way of expressing anger? Do you BLOW OUT (scream, rant and rave), STRIKE OUT (become aggressive), FAKE OUT (make others think you are not angry so no one gets upset), SNUFF OUT (hide your anger while you seethe and boil inside), or do you PULL OUT (leave when situations get tense)? None of those ways of dealing with anger work very well over the long pull. The best way to deal with anger is to learn how to effectively SPEAK OUT your anger without shouting, cursing, complaining, hiding, running, seething, etc. Using S-P-E-A-K as an acrostic, here is the appropriate way to express anger.

things that make us angry besides their mean-spirited, self-centered, egotistical desires to make our lives miserable. You need to work to understand the other person’s point of view. Habit 5 in Steven Covey’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is “seek first to understand, then to be understood.” You can only discover the other person’s point of view if you listen. S = SUPERVISE YOURSELF FIRST. In every tension-filled encounter someone needs to be the grown-up. Take control of your emotions, your body, and your tongue. Anger needs to be expressed in non-threatening ways that do not result in injury to the person with whom you are angry, someone’s property, or even yourself. It is up to you to suppress (different than repress) your anger until you have control of yourself and the situation. Pause and acknowledge the feelings you have and declare to yourself and others involved that the situation will be dealt with in an appropriate manner. Calm yourself down or remove yourself from the situation long enough until you gain personal control. This tells yourself and others that your anger is OK, your selfesteem is strong, and you are an adult!

ateness of the response. In that moment of time you decide what you will say and how you will say it. What you do will determine whether you will make the situation better or worse. Remember, nobody “makes” you angry. You choose the feelings you have and you determine how those feelings will be expressed; they will harm or heal, accept or reject, alleviate or aggravate. It’s your choice, your decision, and you must accept the consequences of your actions and reactions, so ponder carefully. E = EXPLAIN HOW YOU FEEL. “I” statements that clearly declare your feelings or what you need from the other person are a good way to explain how you feel. “I am angry” can be declared as quietly and forcefully as “I am tired.” “I feel slighted”, or “I feel hurt by your words,” or “I need some help” are all non-threatening ways to explain in clear language how you feel.

P = PONDER APPROPRIATE RESPONSES. Anger always arises as the second emotion in any anger-producing incident. The spilled milk comes first, then the angry reaction. It’s the millisecond between the spilled milk and the reaction that holds the key to the appropri-

K = KNOW HOW FAR TO GO AND WHEN TO STOP. This is a matter of wisdom and experience. The better you are at explaining how you feel and then listening to understand the other person’s point of view, the better you will get at knowing how far to go and when to stop. Express your anger in the right way and with the right goals in mind, establish an atmosphere where the two of you can discover ways to prevent future flare-ups. Add to your words a quiet voice and gentle touch, a calm spirit and a sense that you still respect the other person. When anger is recognized and expressed with the intention to strengthen the relationship, it can enhance growth, heighten respect, and restore intimacy.

A = APPLY LISTENING SKILLS. There are many reasons people do

MOMENTS IN TIME THE HISTORY CHANNEL

• On Feb. 21, 1828, the first printing press designed to use the newly invented Cherokee alphabet arrives at New Echota, Ga. A young Cherokee, Sequoyah, had invented the written language, consisting of 86 characters. Within months, the first Indian language newspaper in history was printed. It was called the Cherokee Phoenix. • On Feb. 24, 1836, in San Antonio, Texas, Colonel William Travis issues a call for help on behalf of Texan troops defending the Alamo, an old Spanish mission and fortress under attack by the Mexican army. Only 32 men from the nearby town of Gonzales responded to Travis’ call for help. • On Feb. 23, 1885, a 19-year-old man named John Lee is sent to the gallows in Exeter, England, for the murder of a rich older woman. After the noose was put around his neck the lever malfunctioned three times. The authorities, mystified at the gallows’ inexplicable malfunction, decided to ascribe it to an act of God. Lee was sent to prison instead.

• On Feb. 18, 1930, Pluto is discovered at the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Ariz., by astronomer Clyde W. Tombaugh. In 2006, however, the International Astronomical Union announced that Pluto would no longer be considered a planet due its relatively small mass, just one-sixth that of Earth’s moon. • On Feb. 22, 1959, Lee Petty defeats Johnny Beauchamp at the just-opened Daytona International Speedway in Florida to win the first-ever Daytona 500. The race was so close that Beauchamp was initially named the winner. Three days later, with the assistance of news photographs, Petty was officially named the champ. • On Feb. 19, 1974, Alexander Solzhenitsyn awaits reunion with his family after exile from Russia. Publication of “The Gulag Archipelago,â€? a detailed history of the Soviet prison system, prompted Russia to exile the 55-year-old author. • On Feb. 20, 1985, in a highly controversial vote, the Irish government defies the powerful Catholic Church and approves the sale of contraceptives. The Irish Supreme Court found that a constitutional right to marital privacy covered the use of contraceptives. (c) 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

BTW: NEVER Text and Drive! PART 1 of 2 Series 3, Article 17

Remember writing a letter, putting it in an

envelope, addressing it, stamping it, walking it out to the mailbox…. and then waiting 2 weeks to get a response? Then came emailing…..a quick way to communicate….but you still have to type out the letter and wait for the person to get home, turn on their computer, open their inbox, open your email, read it, then respond. Then came Texting! (Of course, not while driving!) You can instantly communicate with anyone who has their cell phone attached to their face….which is half of America. T

he trouble with mail is that you never get what you really want. For example, check your mailbox at home today. Some of you will receive packages and checks you’ve been waiting for, sure. But what you really crave is an unexpected gem. Imagine receiving a 2 million dollar check from Donald Trump in your mail this week. That would both shock and excite you to a level you can’t even realistically comprehend. But it’s mail. It won’t happen. In reality, you’ll receive some bills, maybe a letter or two, and a bunch of junk. Thus was the story of my e-mail account this week. Don’t worry; the letters were your emails, the junk was spam. It’s not meant to insult those who wrote me, it’s simply meant to prove a point; one I’ll demonstrate in the first ever Mail Edition of Nick Snips. The following are actual emails from actual people: Nick, here’s a question for you. Who care’s what is happening at Duke University? We need more local news and less garbage like what is on television every night. -Anonymous Even though I clearly made a rule stating you must print your name and town at the bottom of your email, every single responder failed to do so. My response to this - There’s a world out there people, let’s make sure our community is active in it. I think there is a fine line to walk when it comes to race. The fraternity didn’t respect the Asian Community, and the ASA took a stand. I think both sides of the issue make valid points. -Monument Citizen

Indeed. But, I don’t think this email was detailed enough. Let me use my final reader response to further explain what “Monument Citizen” was trying to say. People have the right in this country to say what they want; likewise, people have the right to take offense to things that are said. The important part of this equation is that the latter never trumps the former. Asking “has our culture become too easily offended, or simply more aware...?” is a question not worth asking. What we need to make sure of is that no one’s first amendment rights were violated. This story actually happens every year, and every year another group is offended and demands that the universities take action against these young men/women. Really, it is the universities who should be promoting the freedom of speech and thought, even if it seems to be in poor taste. Thankfully, Duke recognized that these students didn’t technically do anything wrong, and will not prosecute them for making a few silly signs and costumes. I can, however, think of a few instances where the universities have taken action against their student in similar situations. The National Kappa Sigma Fraternity, similarly, has every right to reprimand their members because they feel that these boys have not lived up to the standards of the fraternity. The university acted appropriately, the fraternity acted appropriately, and the equation (at least in this instance) remains balanced. -Ryan Ryan and “Monument Citizen” are correct. No one is really in the wrong here. Everyone did there part fairly. They did what they have the right to do. They did what we’d expect them to do. But here’s the problem (and the point). No one answered my questions. They just gave their opinions on the subject at hand. While they were correct, they also ignored the issues; the ones that make us quiver. Is our society too easily offended? Have we as a nation become a plaster of canvas covered in lawyer-paint and fine print? We’ll never know. Because even though some of us (clears throat) dare to ask these questions, no one dares to answer them… myself included. Feel free to send an email to Nick about any underreported news stories you’ve seen recently and would like to see covered in Nick-Snips.

Combine the dry ingredients in a bowl. Sift to assure even distribution of the ingredients. Using a pastry blender, cut in shortening until the mix is the consistency of cornmeal. Easy Baking Mix can be stored in an airtight container in a cool, dry location and will stay fresh for several months. If you would like to keep it longer, store it in the refrigerator or freezer. If you use whole-wheat flour, the mix must be stored in the refrigerator or freezer because there is more fat in whole-wheat flour,

and it can become rancid at room temperature.

TO MAKE BISCUITS Mix 2 cups of Easy Baking Mix with 1/2 to 2/3 cups of water. Use just enough water to make soft, nonsticky dough. Turn out onto a floured surface and knead about 10 times. Roll or pat out dough to 1/2inch thickness. Cut out with a biscuit cutter and bake at 450 degrees F for 8-10 minutes or until lightly browned.

TO MAKE MUFFINS Use 2 cups Easy Baking Mix, 1/4 cup sugar, 1 egg, beaten, and 1 cup of water. Stir sugar into mix. In separate bowl, mix water and egg. Add liquid to dry ingredients and stir for 15 strokes or just until blended. A few lumps are OK. Bake in wellgreased muffin tin at 400 F for 20 minutes for 10-12 medium muffins. For apple muffins, add 3/4 cup peeled, diced apples, 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon and a dash of nutmeg.

TO USE IN YOUR HOME RECIPES Use 1 1/2 cups of Easy Baking Mix for each cup of flour in the recipe. Leave out the leavening, salt, milk and fat in the recipe because they’re already included in the mix -- a great shortcut for your favorite recipes!

New DVD Releases for Week of February 18, 2013 PICKS OF THE WEEK “Argo” (R) -- During the Iran hostage crisis of 1979, 52 Americans were taken captive, but six managed to avoid capture. CIA operative Tony Mendez (Ben Affleck) has to devise a scheme to rescue the six survivors hiding in the Canadian embassy. The plan: pretend Mendez is a Hollywood producer and the civilians are a movie crew scouting locations for a science-fiction movie. It’s a true story too weird to doubt, even for the

Iranian revolutionaries. “Argo” has won a ton of awards and honors, including Oscar nominations for everything from editing to Best Picture. Affleck directed the movie, and gave it a ‘70s feel that is a welcome change of pace from contemporary thrillers. It’s an intriguing narrative with peeks into American foreign policy and the big-headedness of Hollywood. “Anna Karenina” (R) -- Based on the story by Russian author Leo Tolstoy, this adaptation takes a love affair and injects a new level of lush romanticism. Anna (Keira Knightley) is married to a frigid but wellseated government official (Jude Law) in St. Petersburg. She travels to Moscow to settle a dispute, and finds herself in a quandary of her own when she falls for a young army officer (Aaron Taylor-Johnson.) It’s such a saturated and elegant viewing experience that the screen practically drips. The drama and the passion is underscored

by theatrical settings and visual flourishes. Whether or not the actual story pulls you in depends on your vulnerability to starcrossed lovers in elaborate costumes. “Undefeated” (PG-13) -- This documentary follows the struggles of a Memphis highschool football team. In 2009, The Manassas Tigers were on a 110-year losing streak. Bill Courtney is a volunteer coach with the drive to take beaten-down team to their first win in a playoff game. It’s moving to see a grown man spout sports cliches when you know he truly means them. While the coach is the focal point of the story, the film really sinks in because you get to feel for the players -- real inner-city kids hungry for a taste of success. “Fun Size” (PG-13) -- On Halloween night, teenager Wren (Victoria Justice of Nickelodeon’s “Victorious”) gets saddled with babysitting her 8-year-old brother while

16

their mom goes partying with her 20-something boy toy. The little brother promptly disappears in all the holiday hubbub, kicking off a wild night of and teen shenanigans -- with a little bit of searching mixed in. It’s not as touching or poignant as the John Hughes movies it draws from, but “Fun Size” has plenty of chuckles for the pretty tame teen romp that it is.

hroughout the Bible the number forty has been associated with change. It is often a period set aside for fasting and prayer in anticipation and preparation for events yet to come. February 13th, Ash Wednesday, marked the beginning of another forty days – 40 Days for Life. During these forty days of Lent, Christians across America will be gathering in front of Planned Parenthood to pray, to worship and to be a public witness to God’s love – to stand up for life. It is estimated that on average 3,300 babies are killed each day by abortions performed in the United States. That’s one child’s death every 30 seconds – over a million deaths every year. Last year Planned Parenthood alone was responsible for over 333,000 of those abortions and received nearly $542,000,000 in government – read taxpayer – funding. The culture of death has become big business. Unfortunately too many Christians, without even knowing it, are profiting from the business of abortion. They are not doing so through their checkbooks, but it is being done on their behalf, stealthily, through their investments. I recently screened the holdings of the largest index mutual fund in America, the Vanguard 500 Index Fund. Over 71% of the assets held in that fund are of companies involved in activities and industries that most Christians would find morally objectionable, with over 26% involved in the industry of death. Either as a contributor to organizations like Planned Parenthood, or as a manufacturer of the morning after pill and contraceptives, or as a provider of abortions at for profit facilities and hospitals, or by involvement in embryonic stem cell research and experimentation,

or by making abortion on demand part of their employee benefit package. The Vanguard 500 Index Fund does not stand alone. Sadly, when I have run the same moral screens on many other mutual funds I have found their investments too put Christian shareholders in a place of moral compromise. Though the percentages change from fund to fund, companies financially involved in the abortion industries are major profit centers for the vast majority of mutual funds. So how can we manage our investments and stay true to our pro-life values? Fortunately there are a number of mutual fund companies that have made life a core value in their portfolios excluding all companies that have any financial interest in the abortion industry. By moving Christ to the center of their investments portfolios many of these mutual fund companies have found that you can do well by doing what is right. Through these days of Lent why not make them pro-life. Get involved. Take action. Set aside time each day to pray for the end of abortion. Take an hour out of your week and join fellow Christians in the 40 Days for Life Vigil (www.40daysforlife.com/coloradosprings). And, finally, take a look at your investments and find out where you are making your money. “…I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. Choose life, then, so that you and your descendants may live.” Dt 30:19 Chuck Maher is a Certified Financial PlannerTM practitioner specializing in Christian values based financial planning and investing. TRACK COACH DEDUCTS BUSINESS LOSSES FOR EIGHT YEARS, COURT SAYS OK

I

n a recent Tax Court proceeding, a track coach in Oregon reported consecutive losses on eight tax returns starting in 2003. The IRS examined three tax returns starting with 2006, declared the track coach’s activity a hobby and disallowed his losses. Under current tax law, when an activity is not trying to earn a profit, it is considered a hobby and not a legitimate business, and therefore a taxpayer can only deduct the losses to the extent of the earnings. This is similar to gambling- taxpayers can only deduct gambling losses to the extent of gambling winnings.

In this court case the taxpayer approached his coaching in a businesslike manner by actively advertising and seeking ways to improve his business. Specifically the coach was traveling to more track meets and attempting to connect with more potential clients. He also paid for the advice and counsel of other professional track coaches. The time and effort spent by the taxpayer was also considered. According to court documents, the track coach spent substantial time outside of his normal teaching job on the coaching activity. Further, the taxpayer’s marriage and personal life were negatively affected by the time spent, and this supported the Court’s contention that his coaching business was trying to earn a profit. Most tax professionals would be reluctant

to allow eight years of consecutive business losses and subsequent tax deduction. Yet all these factors led the Court to label the professional track coach’s activities a legitimate business and not a hobby, and therefore his losses were allowed to be deducted. To stay out of trouble, the Watson CPA Group advises taxpayers to keep good records of expenses and advertising campaigns. Legitimate businesses advertise, so taxpayers should be able to produce business cards, flyers, letterhead, a website presence and other advertising activities. Business owners should also track time spent on appointments, education, reading publications, attending conferences and speaking with other experts and mentors. Docket 21600-11S, filed October 25, 2012.
