“I will always remember this summer day in Paris, when I was to perform a great acrobatic move. I can still see myself stepping on the ring of a packed circus along real performers.” -Tony Curtis

W
hat comes to mind when you hear the word “circus?” Maybe you think of elephants and peanuts. Or maybe you picture acrobats flying through the air on trapezes. Or perhaps the word brings to mind the kind of creepy Pennywise-like clown only that Stephen King could create. Whatever images the word conjures up for you, be it fun, fear or even a frenzy (as in media circus…get it?) the circus has found its way into each and every one of our lives. But naturally, Snippetz had to wonder: what created the circuses of today? How did they evolve, what did they look like and perhaps, what will they become? Read on circus-lovers and you’ll find out!

The Circus... Continued from Page 1
the Circus Neronis, and the Circus of Maxentius. After the fall of Rome, circus buildings such as these were no longer used to hold performances. The performers, animals, trainers and other such circus folk began trekking from town to town, holding performances across Europe in smaller venues like fairs.
NOT YOUR GRANDMOTHER’S CIRCUS It probably doesn’t come as a surprise that the first circuses originated in Greece and Rome. In fact, an early Christian writer from Carthage named Tertullian wrote that the first circus was held by the Greek goddess Circe to honor her father Helios, the Sun god. Absent were the big tents and mobile structures. Instead, permanent buildings were erected.
LORD OF THE RING? British equestrian Philip Astley was the first to bring trick horse-riding to the circus ring and his first performance is said to have been held on Jan. 9, 1768. Thanks to the popularity of equestrian acts such as his, the diameter of the actual ring inside which the horses performed was set at 42 feet, the smallest the ring could be for a horse to still comfortably gallop inside it.
The word circus in those ancient times referred more to the building in which the event was held, rather than the event itself. The circus building was the stage for horse exhibitions, chariot races, staged battles, trained animals, acrobats and jugglers, among other things. In Rome, the circus building was structured in tiers of seats that encircled all but one side of the course in which the performances were held. The open end allowed for performers, animals and the like to enter and exit.
Astley eventually added tight-rope walkers, jugglers, acrobats, performing dogs and even a (yikes!) clown to help entertain attendees in between his demonstrations, thus creating the first modern circus. However, he didn’t create the title “circus.” That is said to have been coined by his rival Charles Hughes’ business partner, Charles Dibdin when the pair opened the Royal Circus on Nov. 4, 1782 in London.

Rome’s first circus, the Circus Maximus, was constructed during the first monarchy in the valley between the Palatine and Aventine hills. Built entirely of wood, the circus had to be reconstructed several times before the final stone version was built. This circus could hold up to 250,000 people.
COMING TO AMERICA John Bill Ricketts, an Englishman who was originally part of the Royal Circus in London, broke away and headed to the United States in 1792, bringing with him the circus. His first circus (and America’s first, too) was opened in Philadelphia on Apr. 3, 1793. It’s said that later that same year, George Washington attended one of Ricketts’ circus performances. From the late 18th century into the early part of the 19th century, circuses were enhanced, upgraded and improved. It was truly revolutionized by P.T. Barnum and William Cameron Coup with the development of P.T. Barnum’s Museum, Menagerie & Circus. This show was a portable array of animal and human “oddities,” advertising such exhibitions as freak shows. America could officially boast that the freak show was all their idea. Coup also introduced the use of circus trains as a means of transportation for the performers. Thanks to this practice, circuses had the space to drag with them several rings to use in the performance space. While the first animals used in circuses

The Circus... Continued from Page 2 were used more for display rather than performance, clearly that practice has morphed into full-on trained animal acts. In 1833, Isaac A. Van Amburgh was the first American performer to enter a cage with live wild animals. He is widely considered the first wild animal trainer in American circus history.
ON THE ROAD AGAIN Travelling circuses were truly the way of the world by the 1840s, especially in Britain. Circus groups erected temporary circus tents for the performances and broke them back down for easy portability when they needed to move on. After Barnum died on Apr. 7, 1891, his circus partnered with the James Anthony Bailey’s circus and was known as The Barnum & Bailey Greatest Show on Earth. It toured from 1897 to 1902 throughout Europe and paved the way for other circus owners to adopt its portable tent and circus train travelling practices. The constitution of the performances also changed around this same time. They generally included the same elements: circus acts, an animal exhibit and a freak show in some combination to keep the audience entertained. Ever-increasing acts of daring and feats of strength were incorporated along with the standard elements, requiring a higher number of performers. Naturally, all this came at a cost since everyone and everything had to be transported from venue to venue.
CIRCUSES OF TODAY While some circuses still use the big tents and circus trains to travel from city to city, others have opted to forgo the tents and use existing venues to hold their performances. They often still use animals, however another form of circus has emerged that largely eliminates the use of animals and instead focuses on human feats of aerial acrobatics, contortionists and strength. The most popular production is that of the Cirque Du Soleil (meaning “circus of the sun”), which travels around the world performing in large venues, all without the use of animals. The Cirque Du Soleil concept was first pitched to the general public in 1984. They were group of street performers calling themselves “Le Club des Talons Hauts” (meaning the high-heels

club), led by Guy Laliberté who was a fire-breathing musician (he didn’t perform both acts at the same time), who now serves as the Founding President of Cirque Du Soleil. Initially the Cirque shows entertained about 270,000 people per year from 1984 to 1989. By 2003, the group was performing shows on three different continents and had entertained almost 7,000,000 audience members.

Incorporated into the Cirque type of performance are elements such as the Chinese Pole, the Russian Bar and the teeterboard known also as the Korean Plank. The Chinese Pole is just how it sounds: a vertical pole that performers use to climb, slide down or pose. Sometimes performers will leap from pole to pole or hold a pose called “the flag” where the performer pushes straight out in a horizontal position and keeps their whole body aligned, resembling a flag.

The Russian Bar is a flexible vaulting bar situated on the shoulders of the porters who stand at either end of the bar and help fling the flyer into the air. The porters must be able not only to support and fling the flyer, but they must be able to reposition themselves in order to ensure the flyer lands back on the bar rather than on the ground.
Get Your Mind in the Gutter With winter upon us and the holidays over, now is the time to get your mind in the gutter. If your gutters are full of ice and snow, call Kirt Byerly, the new dealer for Gutter Helmet in the Colorado Springs areas.
The Korean Plank is basically a seesaw. One performer stands on the end and one or sometimes two performers leap onto the other end, sending the lone performer flying into the air. The acrobatics often don’t end when the performer lands because often he or she will land on a human ladder of other performers or a stack of chairs. The possibilities are endless!
Our company, Gutter Helmet of the Pikes Peak Region can help you with those icicles and ice dams that are causing very dangerous areas that you or your guests can slip on. We have a product called Helmet Heat that can be installed and will melt away your troubles.

• Barnum found an elderly blind and almost completely paralyzed African American woman in 1834 who he showed as an exhibit, claiming she was 160 years old and the former nurse of George Washington. When she died, it was proven that she was no older than 80. • The United States Animal Welfare Act has set minimum standards for animal care in circuses and every major circus in the country has been cited for violating those standards.

OUR GARDEN CENTER IS NOW OPEN! in three different forms. They can be started from seed, from sets or from starts also called transplants. For our short season I recommend either starting from sets or transplants. Onion sets will come in a bag and look like a bunch of mini onions. They’re great because these are second year onions and you can plant them earlier than transplants. All of the hard work has been done for you.
ONION SEEDS, SETS AND STARTS

f onions are a regular staple in your kitchen, then you might be considering them as an addition to your vegetable garden this spring. After all what good is a vegetable garden if you’re not growing the things you buy the most? If you’re worried you won’t be able to eat fifty onions in one season simply allow them dry completely after harvesting and then store them in a cool dark basement using pantyhose with knots tied between each onion. This way you’ll have months to use up your harvest. The best part is that you can cross onions off your grocery list, but don’t forget to replace it with pantyhose. Don’t worry guys if I see you at the grocery buying pantyhose I won’t judge. Onions can be ordered from seed catalogs or found at your local garden center and you can find them

Generally many beginner onion growers have better success with sets. Onion transplants on the other hand are 8 to 10 week old onion plants. They already have green tops and after they’re planted will begin to form a bulb. The real benefit to transplants is that they usually come in many varieties unlike sets that come in just yellow, white or purple. This allows you to pick varieties based on how well they store or whether they are day neutral, which is best for our climate.

ometimes brochures and cards that come in the mail look like something real and legitimate. I received a card that at first glance appeared to have come from Social Security. It invited me to send back the card (postage paid) to receive a free brochure entitled “New Social Security Changes and Benefits.”
•Garnishments •Foreclosure •Harassment
It was only when I looked at the very bottom at the fine print (and yes, I had to use a magnifying glass because it was so tiny) that I learned the sender was not affiliated with the government: It was a sales pitch! When I traced down the person named on the card, it turned out he’s selling investments.
» Free Consultation » Payment Plans Available
I found the same card on a marketing site on the Internet. Marketing companies sell the cards as a directmail piece, part of a lead-generation program for salespeople. Somehow they got my name and address, and hoped I’d fill out even more information on the card (date of birth, home phone number and email address) and mail it back to them. With that information, they could start calling me to push whatever they’re selling. I found a similar website, one that deals with promotional mailers, with this banner streaming across the top: “Social Security Leads are HOT ... mailers pulling 5 percentplus.” That means that one in every 20 people who receive the mailing piece will respond. The lesson in all this is to hesitate before you fill out something you get in the mail, even if it appears to be legitimate. Get out your magnifying glass and look carefully. You might find a line or two of the truth at the bottom. Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Millions of people worldwide live without an appendix. They do quite well. So will your son.
LIFE IS STILL GOOD WITHOUT AN APPENDIX DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My 13-yearold son went to camp for five days. On day three, he had terrific stomach pain and started to vomit. The instructors were alarmed and took him to the local hospital, where doctors diagnosed appendicitis. We had to give phone permission for him to have an operation. Everything went fine, and he recovered quickly. My wife and I have a few questions. Could he have eaten something that caused appendicitis? What does not having an appendix do to people? No one in my wife’s or my family has had such an operation. We’re ignorant about all this. -- G.G. ANSWER: The appendix dangles from the first part of the colon in the lower-right side of the abdomen. It looks like a slender worm, and has an average length of 3 inches (8 cm). The function of the appendix isn’t clearly defined, but it might have a role in body immunity. Life without an appendix goes on as normally as life with one. The appendix has a hollow core, which is lined with lymphoid tissue, the same kind of tissue found in lymph nodes. Bacteria from the colon can invade the hollow core and cause the lymph tissue to swell. Swelling cuts off blood supply, and the appendix begins to disintegrate -- appendicitis. Undigested food or hard fecal material also can block the appendix’s core and lead to the same situation. Nothing your son ate is likely the cause. All the other campers ate the same food, but he was the only one to develop this problem. The pain of appendicitis most often starts in the area of the navel (bellybutton) and

We couldn’t believe how little was left of the plane and the people that went down in a Pennsylvania field. Things changed that morning. They help us see things in a new light and are there to gently calm us as they listen. And so we talk, and blessed we are when we find someone to listen. (Fear is not a bad thing. It exists for our protection as an early warning signal. There is, however, a big difference between the healthy fear that tells us to step back from the edge of a cliff and a constant fear that keeps us from living and loving life.)

• On March 17, 1762, in New York City, the first parade honoring the feast day of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, is held by Irish soldiers serving in the British army. Early Irish settlers to the American colonies, many of whom were indentured servants, brought the Irish tradition of celebrating St. Patrick’s feast day to America. • On March 11, 1818, “Frankenstein: or, The Modern Prometheus,â€? is published. The book, by 21-year-old Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, is frequently called the world’s first science-fiction novel. • On March 12, 1933, eight days after his inauguration, President Franklin D. Roosevelt gives his first national radio address, or “fireside chat,â€? broadcast from the White House. Roosevelt made sure each address was understandable to ordinary Americans. • On March 13, 1944, Britain announces that all travel between Ireland and the United Kingdom is suspended, the result of the Irish government’s refusal to expel Axispower diplomats within its borders. Ireland
stood its ground. • On March 14, 1950, the Federal Bureau of Investigation institutes the “Ten Most Wantedâ€? list in an effort to publicize particularly dangerous fugitives. The creation of the program arose out of a news story in 1949 about the “toughest guysâ€? the FBI wanted to capture.

Who needs Cancun when you live in Colorado? Five Spring Break Destinations in Colorado PART 2 of 2
GO FOR THE GOLD
Series 6, Article 6
If you're dreaming of beautiful beaches, turquoise water and a golden tan for spring break… snap out of it, fast!!! There's plenty to do here in Colorado, and it's all out your front door.
timer class: $69; drop-in session (after completing one hit wonder): $29; one hit wonder + drop-in session: $90.75; lift ticket at Copper Mountain: $92 www.woodwardatcopper.com
Copper, CO -- Copper Mountain is a no-nonsense guaranteed good place to make some nice turns. While it's far less of a ski town compared to nearby places like Breckenridge or Vail, Copper gets down to business and offers the most terrain in Summit County. It's also conveniently close to a number of other attractions like The Outlets at Silverthorne and Lake Dillon. For those who dream of learning gravity-defying tricks on skis & boards, Woodward at Copper's got a treat for you: a (mostly) pain-free way to take your skiing and riding to the next level. Pros and amateurs alike come here to master rotations on trampolines and test out spins and flips on skis and boards…landing carefree in a seven foot deep foam pit! Damage: One hit wonder first
Steamboat Springs, CO -Steamboat Springs is a fun getaway for spring break, with a spectacular mountain and great snow. Known for its tree skiing and champagne powder, people love The Boat. And, there's plenty to do between Old Town and Steamboat Village. Tucked away deep in the forest, you'll find Strawberry Park Hot Springs-a true winter hotspot! While it can be an adventure to get here (think steep and windy snowpacked roads), it's a worthwhile excursion. Stone walls divide this sandy-bottomed pool into several areas, so you can soak in steamy mineral water surrounded by snowy aspens and pine trees. (Be aware, swimsuits optional after dark.) Damage: $10 hot springs, $35 shuttle, $95 lift ticket www.strawberryhotsprings.com

T
reasure hunting has become something of legend. Entertainment and media have taken advantage of the mythology and intrigue buried treasure provides with things like the Pirates of Caribbean franchise pulling in hundreds of millions of dollars. It’s such a foreign concept to people in this age of the internet and social media; our goldmines consist of electronic documents and plastic credit cards these days. For those who believe that technology has progressed too far; for those who miss the good old days, I bear good news. A man named Forrest Fenn is fed up with our coach-potatolike tendencies. He’s using the ancient art of treasure hunting to change our ways. The 82-year old millionaire extraordinaire has made a unique offer to mankind. Get outside. Hike, fish, run, dig, and seek. If you do it wisely, you will have the opportunity to make a fortune. In an attempt to fix our lazy ways; Mr. Fenn has buried a treasure that he guarantees is worth more than 1 million dollars. His object is to get parents to take their kids outside and be more active. Along the way, Forrest Fenn has provided a couple of clues. A poem he wrote provides guidelines and landmarks to look for. Here’s an excerpt: Begin it where warm waters halt And take it in the canyon down, Not far, but too far to walk. Put in below the home of Brown. From there it’s no place for the meek, The end is ever drawing nigh; There’ll be no paddle up your creek, Just heavy loads and water high.
The poem goes on to give instructions on unbury the actual treasure. In interviews, Fenn has claimed that anyone, even a child, would be strong enough to claim the chest that consists of gold and jewels. The most exciting news for us Colorado-native people, however, is that the stash could be right in our back yard. The architect of the hunt, Mr. Fenn himself, lives in New Mexico. He has told the public that the treasure is North of Sante Fe, NM and above 5,000 feet in elevation! Analysts presume the treasure is somewhere (if not in) the state of New Mexico. Southern Colorado is surely on the list of potential burial spots though. Our tale ends with a bittersweet note. Mr. Fenn is currently in remission. Cancer has taken a hold of his body. Because of this however, Forrest is more eager than ever to reveal the location of his chest. He will reveal new clues about the treasure once a month from this point forward. He promises that the gold has yet to be found, also claiming that people have stepped within 500-feet of the much sought-after prize. This gives hope to those who anticipate too difficult of a path ahead. So this week’s message is simple. Get out of bed. Stand up off of that couch. Turn off the television. Tell your kids to stop “gaming” for a moment. Seeing the great outdoors and what Mother Nature provides us with daily is spectacular enough on its own. Now there’s the chance to be a millionaire. Your entire life could change just by going on an adventure. Heck, even if you don’t find the treasure and you continue to live the financial life you were given, you’ll start to feel better. You might even find something more important than the treasure; you may find yourself healthy, fit, and happy.

SWEET FACTS ABOUT SWEET POTATOES
I
’m often asked about the difference between sweet potatoes and yams. The sweet potato is not a potato or even a distant cousin. Potatoes are tubers; sweet potatoes are roots. True yams (from tropical and subtropical regions of the world) contain more starch and less sugar than sweet potatoes -- and they must be cooked before eating. African slaves in the South called the sweet potato “nyami” because it reminded them of the starchy, edible tuber of that name that grew in their homeland. The Senegalese word “nyami” was eventually shortened to
When the orangefleshed, Puerto Rican variety of sweet potatoes was adopted by Louisiana producers and shippers, they called them “yams” to distinguish them from the white-fleshed sweet potatoes grown in other parts of the country. The yam reference became the trademark for Louisiana-grown sweet potato, and refers to sweet potatoes that are grown in Louisiana. There is a difference between sweet potatoes grown in northern states and those grown in Louisiana. Sweet potatoes produced in the northern states are mostly “firm” and tend to be drier and more mealy with yellow flesh. Folks in Louisiana enjoy the second type, “soft,” which is higher in natural sugar. Louisiana sweet potatoes are moister, and have a bright-orange flesh color. Most often, it is the “soft” type that is referred to as a yam. Sweet potatoes are stored in temperature- and humidity-controlled warehouses that extend their shelf life for the entire year. So the “season” for

VIETNAMESE SWEET POTATO AND PORK SOUP
Here’s some great information about the health benefits of sweet potatoes, and how to select, store and prepare them:
1 tablespoon canola oil 1 pound ground pork 1 small onion, finely chopped (about 1/2 cup) 1/4 cup chopped fresh basil, divided 1 (3-inch) piece lemongrass or zest of 1 lemon 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 jalapeno pepper, chopped 2 teaspoons grated fresh ginger 2 teaspoons ground cumin 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cardamom 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg 2 sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch cubes (about 2 cups) 1 quart chicken stock 1 (13.5-ounce) can light coconut milk 1 tablespoon soy sauce Chopped fresh cilantro, basil or jalapeno pepper slices for garnish
• Orange, leafy green and red fruits and veggies, such as sweet potatoes, are full of beta-carotene/vitamin A, which regulates cell production and turnover for a smooth skin surface. • The CSPI ranked the sweet potato at 184 in nutritional value, more than 100 points ahead of a baked Idaho potato, spinach or broccoli. • Sweet potatoes provide twice the recommended daily allowance of vitamin A and more than one-third of the daily requirements of vitamin C. • Sweet potatoes are an important source of beta-carotene, vitamin B-6, iron, potassium and fiber. Sweet potatoes that are a pretty, bright-orange color are richest in beta-carotene. • Studies have consistently shown that a high intake of beta-carotene-rich vegetables and fruits, like sweet potatoes, can significantly reduce the risks for certain types of cancer. • Sweet potatoes contain virtually no fat or sodium. • When selecting fresh sweet potatoes, choose those that are smooth, plump, dry and clean. • Sweet potatoes should not be refrigerated unless cooked. Store at 55 degrees to 65 degrees F. • Always use a stainless-steel knife when cutting a sweet potato. Using a carbon blade will cause them to darken. • One cup of canned sweet potatoes equals one medium-size, cooked fresh sweet potato. • When using canned yams, add them at the end of the recipe because they are already pre-cooked.
1. In a large stockpot, heat oil over medium heat. Add pork, onion, 2 tablespoons basil, lemongrass or lemon zest, garlic, jalapeno, ginger, cumin, cardamom, salt, pepper and nutmeg. Cook until pork is browned and onion is soft, about 10 minutes. 2. Add sweet potatoes, chicken stock and coconut milk. Bring to a boil and then reduce heat to a simmer. Cover and cook until sweet potatoes are tender, about 20 minutes. Uncover, remove lemongrass (if used) and stir in soy sauce. Garnish with remaining cilantro, basil and jalapeno, if desired. Serves 4. ***

New DVD Releases for Week of March 11, 2013 PICKS OF THE WEEK “Life of Pi” (PG) -- This story of survival and spirituality is a breathtaking adaptation of a novel that many thought to be unfilmable. Pi is a thoughtful young man who works at his family’s zoo in India. While transporting the animals to a new location in Canada, the freighter carrying Pi and the animals is swallowed by the Pacific Ocean. Pi barely survives the wreck, but he’s not alone -- he has to share his lifeboat with a
hungry adult tiger. Director Ang Lee uses computer animation to make the story visually stunning without losing the liveliness of the animals. The tiger looks amazing, and there’s never a dull scene during Pi’s long journey on the open ocean. Keeping the story afloat is a deepbut-digestible discussion of spirituality and the will of nature. “Rise of the Guardians” (PG) -- This animated adventure assembles a super-team of fairy tales to defend the world’s children from a dream-infecting boogeyman. The Easter Bunny (voiced by Hugh Jackman), North (read: Santa Claus, Alec Baldwin with a Russian accent), the Tooth Fairy (Isla Fisher), Jack Frost (Chris Pine) and the Sandman (he doesn’t talk) use their superpowers to fight, fly and crack visual gags for about 90 minutes. It’s not the most compelling story ever. The visuals and pacing are so cluttered that any sense of wonder or imagination is immedi-
ately blindsided by the next joke or action sequence. However, it’s still a fun adventure that earns children’s attention through sheer excitement. “Hitchcock” (R) -- At the height of his fame, director Alfred Hitchcock (portrayed here by Anthony Hopkins) went all-in on a controversial project, the now-legendary “Psycho.” This witty biopic (kinda) peeks in on the conflict and creativity that went into Hitchcock’s masterpiece. The director backed production with his own fortune because studios found it too risky and risque. Hitchcock himself bought up every copy of the book “Psycho” so that no one could spoil the end of his soon-to-be masterpiece. Movie buffs will be delighted by the injokes and jabs at old Hollywood. Folks not so well-acquainted with Hitchcock get an entertaining peek into a cinema legend. “Smashed” (R) -- Kate (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) is a sublimely pretty public-
16
school teacher with a low-brow, charming hubby (Aaron Paul, Jesse from TV’s “Breaking Bad). Their shared life of fun and freedom takes a dark turn when darkling Kate has to confront her drinking problem -- it’s all fun and games until somebody accidentally tries crack, or vomits in front of a class of first-graders. It’s a long hard road to recovery, but this is a different kind of addiction story -- one that’s more human than melodramatic.

HOW ACCURATE IS YOUR CREDIT REPORT?
C
onsumers are allowed to get a free copy of their credit report each year. Chances are that most only send for it when a problem arises with a loan or a hike in insurance rates. A better tactic is to send for the report annually and check it closely for accuracy. Look for errors about whether your bills have been paid on time, if you’ve paid more than the minimum payment, and your percentage of credit availability used. All of these affect your credit score. The Federal Trade Commission recently completed the fifth segment of its ongoing study about the accuracy of consumer credit reporting by the Big Three: TransUnion, Equifax and Experian. Here are some of the things the FTC discovered: • Five percent of consumers had a serious-enough error to cause them to have to pay higher interest for loans and insurance. • One in five had an error on at least one report. • One in four had errors that could affect their credit score.
• One in 10 had a change in their FICO score after the errors were corrected. • One in 20 had a FICO score change of more than 25 points; one in 250 had a change of more than 100 points. Nowadays, it’s important to check for someone else’s name on your report. This information often is at the very end under an “Also Known As” section. If your name is Thomas J. Smith and you’ve never opened a line of credit with “TJ Smith” or “Tom Smith” and you see an alternate name on your reports, beware that someone might have been using your credit or there might be a conflict between files. To file a complaint with the FTC, call it at 1-877-FTC-HELP (1-877382-4357). The Big Three reporting agencies are: TransUnion, 1-800-916-8800; Equifax, 1-800-685-1111; and Experian, 1-888-397-3742 Scrutinizing your credit report once a year and then disputing any errors is the best way to keep your FICO score as high as it legitimately should be. Get your reports (from all three agencies) at AnnualCreditReport.com, or call 1-877-3228228. In some states you’re allowed two free reports per year. here’s an investment product out there called a Roth 401k- it’s been around for several years now, yet it remains quiet on most people’s retirement radar. And we think you should give it serious consideration as a hedge against future taxes. Why? A Roth 401k is a hybrid between a Roth IRA and a traditional 401k- it is a mixture of best practices by solving problems inherent in Roth IRAs and 401ks. All the taste, with less calories. Roth IRAs grow tax free which is the main attraction. However, they have relatively low contributions limits ($5,500 for 2013)
401ks don’t grow tax free, but reduce your tax liability today. And they have much higher contributions limits ($17,500 for 2013) and don’t have income phaseouts per se. A Roth 401k combines the desirable features into one product- grows tax free, higher contributions and no income phaseouts. The one downside is that Roth 401ks do not reduce your taxable income today as traditional 401ks do. So why do you need one? The thought process behind traditional 401ks was that your income and subsequent tax rate would shrink during retirement, and to reduce your taxable income during your

presumably high earning and therefore high tax rate years made sense. However, many people are continuing to work and have maintained their marginal tax rate into retirement. Therefore 401ks became less attractive as a tax reduction tool over a lifetime. Roth 401ks on the other hand will grow tax free, so regardless of your tax rate the gains are not taxed. Future effective tax rate is something very few taxpayers concern themselves with, but it is important when it comes to your retirement investment strategy. Our advice is to diversify your income streams much like you diversify a portfolio. To spread the retirement tax rate risk, perhaps you should invest in both 401ks and Roth 401ks. Speak to your financial advisor for more details.
