There is no charge to visit the Hair Museum but women are provided the means to leave their own hair sample, should they choose to do so.

Avanos, Turkey is an area more commonly known for its earthenware pottery made from mud from the Red River. However, the Avanos Hair Museum has created a new point of interest for the town. And just how does one come into possession of over 16,000 samples of hair from women across the globe?

The Place to Find Local Businesses on the Go!... 10-11

over the years, which has helped bring customers into his pottery shop.

THE DOG COLLAR MUSEUM In the Gatehouse of Leeds Castle in Kent, England, canine accessories is the name of the game. The Dog Collar Museum features over 100 different and unique collars and other neckwear, dating from as far back as the 15th and 16th centuries.

It’s said that owner Chez Galip, a wellknown potter, built the museum underneath his pottery shop roughly 30 years ago when a female friend had to leave Avanos. Galip was very distraught at her impending departure so his friend cut a piece of her hair off as a memento by which he could remember her. In the years that followed, other women who visited his shop heard the story and decided to add their locks to his collection, along with their complete address. The hair samples completely cover the walls, ceiling and any other surface besides that floor inside the cave below the workshop. If you are afflicted with chaetophobia, the fear of hair, this museum should not be on your must-see list of museums.

The location of the museum is significant considering the last person to own the estate was Lady Baillie. Still unclear on the significance? Well, born Olive Cecilia Paget in the United States in 1899, Lady Baillie became owner of Leeds Castle following her marriage and subsequent divorce to Arthur Wilson Filmer, with whom she purchased the estate in the late 1920s. It’s said that Lady Baillie was a great dog lover, described as always having several dogs at any given time. One of the most popular pieces in the museum is one of the oldest: a collar adorned with spikes, intended to protect

But why does each sample contain an address? Well, every year in June and December, the first customer to enter Galip’s shop is taken down to the Hair Museum to choose 10 samples off the wall. The women who donated those samples receive a week-long all-expenses-paid trip to Cappadocia, Turkey. They are also invited to participate in Galip’s pottery workshops, free of charge. It’s said that this is his way of thanking all the women who have contributed to his hair museum

In keeping with our European theme, we move on to the British Lawnmower Museum, located in Southport, Merseyside, England. This museum highlights the history of this device from the last 200 years and even has a lawnmower owned by Prince Charles and Princess Diana on display. The first modern lawnmower is attributed to Edwin Beard Budding who designed a machine to trim the hems of Guardmen’s uniforms back in 1830. Apparently, his machine doubled as a lawnmower. Also included in the more than 300 lawnmowers in the museum’s collection are the patent and blueprints for a lawnmower dating back to 1799. The collection ranges from the world’s most expensive lawnmower, a commercial grade mower costing about $90,000 Unusual Museums... Continued on Page 3

THE SPAM® MUSEUM Leave it to Americans to build a museum devoted entirely to a manufactured meat product. Located in Austin, Minn., the 16,500 square foot museum is known by several different names: The Guggenham, Porkopolis, or M.O.M.A (Museum Of Meat-Themed Awesomeness). Initially introduced by the Hormel Foods Corporation in 1937, SPAM® is canned, precooked spiced ham. The name is actually just a shortened version of spiced ham. Since its inception, several different offshoots of the original flavor have been debuted: Hot & Spicy with Tabasco, Jalapeño, Garlic, Bacon and spreadable to name a few.

Besides a variety of different SPAM®specific historical facts included in the more than 400-item collection, visitors can replenish their SPAM® supply at the SPAM® store.

THE WASHINGTON BANANA MUSEUM If meat-themed awesomeness isn’t quite your cup of tea, perhaps The Washington Banana Museum is. Located in Auburn, Wash., the museum boasts close to 4,000 banana-related items. Ann Mitchell Lovell runs the museum and also proudly advertises the online version of the museum for those banana lovers that can’t make the journey to her museum in person.

Lovell’s knowledge of the banana is somewhat staggering. It makes sense since the average American is said to eat about 150 bananas per year, while she claims to average 365. If it weren’t for the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Expo-

sition, she might not have ever been able to enjoy this particular fruit. The banana was introduced to the average American citizen at this exposition, alongside such lesser-known items like Alexander Graham Bell’s telephone. Not to be forgotten is the 1944 song by Louis Prima, Jack Zero and Ben Jaffe called, “Please No Squeeza da Banana,” clearly illustrating the banana’s importance in America at the time.

OTHER MUSEUMS OF NOTE • The Mustard Museum – located in Middleton, Wisc., it displays a collection of more than 5,300 mustards from more than 60 countries. • Siriraj Medical Museum – located in Thailand and more commonly known as the Museum of Death, it displays items such as the museum founder’s skeleton,

• Momofuku Ando Instant Ramen Museum – located in Japan, it displays a massive statue of the instant ramen noodle creator Momofuku Ando standing atop a cup of instant ramen and provides a kitchen for visitors to make their own ramen meal. • Beijing Tap Water Museum – located in China, it displays 130 items ranging from vintage water coupons from the first tap water company in the city of Beijing to “real” taps.

WHY IS IT SO HARD TO GROW UNDER PINE TREES?

• Museum of Crutches – located in Naphthalan, Azerbaijan, this museum is said to contain crutches from people who came to the city injured and sick, bathed in the local oils and left completely cured.

G

rowing under Pine trees can be challenging and without success it can be a costly sequence of trial and error. From failed attempts at growing grass, wildflowers, perennials and shrubs it’s enough to cause balding due to trying to rip your own hair out. There is a common belief that this is because the needles that drop from the trees turn the soil too acidic. Tony Koski a professor at CSU explains that fallen needles can, if left for years to decompose, slightly lower the pH of soil but by no more than .5 units! This is actually good because it is neutralizing your soil not acidifying. So back to the big question, why is it so hard to grow under pine trees?

• The Garbage Museum – located in Stratford, Conn., this museum has a Trash-o-saurus made from a ton of trash (literally).

There are actually three reasons that plants struggle under pine trees. The first reason is that there is not enough light. Pine trees are dense and their canopies prevent most of the usable light from reaching the underneath of the tree. The second reason is that because of a pine tree’s dense canopy, water also has a hard time penetrating it and the amount of water that does make it through is quickly taken up by the pine tree itself. Which leads us to the third reason; too much root competition. Pine trees have shallow root systems and compete against other roots for water and nutrients. And in case you were wondering they usually win! The good news is that it is not hopeless. There are plenty of plants that will tolerate and even thrive in dry shade. Anything you plant will still need supplemental watering and feedings, but with the extra effort you can finally fill that spot in your yard. I have personally had success with Vinca, Kinnikinnick, Plumbago and Mint. Other plants to try are Brunnera, Avens, Blue Eyed Grass, Feverfew, Strawberries, and Rose Campion.

or a growing number of us, it will become necessary at some point to have a knee replacement. A recently completed 20-year study, funded in part by the National Institute on Aging, shows the number of knee surgeries has steadily risen. More of us, it seems, are now walking pain-free.

We are a federally designated debt relief agency pursuant to Title 11 of the U.S. Code, to help people file bankruptcy

But the news isn’t all good, however. The study included 3.3 million participants who had a primary knee replacement and 300,000 who had a revision process, which is replacement of a previous implanted joint. Along the way, hospital stays have gotten shorter for recovery from the knee surgeries. This has caused higher complication rates as well as higher readmission rates, as we go back in the hospital when things go wrong.

You are invited to Mountain View Electric Association’s 72nd Annual Meeting of Members

Between 1991 and 2010, the number

Hospital readmissions jumped from 4 percent to 5 percent for primary procedures, and from 6 percent to 9 percent for revisions. Revisions caused more than double the readmission rates for wound infection, and a 100 percent increase for hemorrhage and heart attack. There’s one thing to be said for following a good diet: If we keep our weight down and stay out of the obese category, we might be able to avoid needing knee surgery.

Hospital stays were cut from eight to four days for primary surgery, and from nine to five days for revision surgeries. This was no doubt due to insurers who want patients out of the hospital as quickly as possible to cut costs.

of the brain. It runs from the neck to the lower back. It’s only as thick as your little finger. An eraser dropped from 12 inches onto it would smash it beyond repair. It, therefore, needs protection. Nature has encased it in the back bones (vertebrae) through a tunnel that runs the length of the spinal column. Narrowing of the tunnel is called spinal stenosis.

SPINAL STENOSIS OFTEN CAUSE OF BACK PAIN DEAR DR. DONOHUE: You have no idea how painful spinal stenosis is. Only oxycodone works. My doctor is afraid that I will become addicted. I am 75. I would rather die an addict than a person in constant pain. A surgeon told me it was too dangerous to operate unless I am in constant pain. Can you help? -B.A. DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I read your article on spinal stenosis. I am 82, in good health, but plagued with back pain. My daughter, a nurse at a university hospital, had me see a neurosurgeon there. He suggested a microsurgical procedure that took about three hours. I was discharged with a small bandage. I am now more than two months post-op, and my back feels better than it has in years. People with spinal stenosis should consider this operation. -M.R.

The narrowed part compresses the spinal cord and is quite painful. The narrowing comes from bone spurs, arthritis changes or thickening of back ligaments. Physical therapy, through strengthening back muscles and stretching thickened back ligaments, often lessens pain. Pain medicines can be used liberally. Injection of cortisone into the spinal canal (epidurals) is another way to ease pain and compression.

Failure doesn’t happen only to you, it happens to everyone. If you attempt anything significant in life you will experience failure. The difference between people is how they perceive their failures. Do they view them as dead ends or do they see them as learning experiences? Are they stumbling blocks or steppingstones? I am convinced that far too often we review and relive our mistakes without learning anything from them. Do not rehearse over and over again your failures. Do not wallow in your stupidity or bad luck without ever asking, “What did I learn? Your first-class failure may hold the key to your ultimate success. If you don’t learn from your failures, you fail twice. My third suggestion is: Start over, but start smarter. Henry Ford said, “Failure is only the opportunity to begin again more intelligently. I don’t care how many bad choices you have made in your life, you are much, much smarter than you give yourself credit for. So take what you’ve learned from your failures and put them to work on your next project, and get started soon. The sooner you move beyond your failures to start work on your future, the sooner you will succeed.

The simulated patients include a pregnant woman and a newborn baby who can cry and turn blue when in distress. These simulators also talk, have eyes that blink, and gush blood and other bodily fluids which makes the patient experience even more realistic. The Monument Academy students were able to practice taking vital signs and were given a glimpse of the many scenarios nursing students may deal with.

THE WALKING DEAD

A new documentary, Unclaimed, tells the story of Faunce tracking down Robinson in South-Central Vietnam. The film debuted in Toronto last week and amazed audiences with it’s story of the soldier who survived an air attack, and is now back from the dead.

V

ietnam is one of the most violent, infamous war’s in United States history. It was an unpopular affair and a central figure in the “hippie” movement of the 60’s. Presidential names like Kennedy, Nixon, and Johnson come to mind when thinking of the conflict. Several major blockbuster films depicted the war to great success; films like Apocalypse now, Platoon, and even the universal classic Forest Gump. After all the memorials, dramatizations, and stories, the conflict remains one of the most memorable events in our country’s history. Because of this fact, it may come as a surprise to many that a new story related to the war has not made headlines nationwide; no, only in Snippetz will you read the eye-opening story of a lost Vietnam soldier, who has now been found.

2013 Annual Family Health Fair

44 years ago, John Hartley Robinson was a Green Beret, fighting honorably in a United States uniform. He served for several years, until his helicopter was shot down on a secret mission in 1968. The fiery crash left little doubt about the fate of those on board. He and his crew were presumed dead. Robinson left behind a wife and two children. His name was inscribed in the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial in Washington, DC. Thousands who swiped their fingers across the stone unknowingly felt his name rippling on the edge of their tips. His loved one’s carried on without him. Then, thanks to film maker Michael Jorgensen and his co-hort, Vietnam

It should be noted that the 76-year old man has been confirmed by his sister; she swears it’s him. He has no desire to return to America, and in fact, doesn’t even remember how to speak English. It makes you wonder who else is out there. Is it really possible that Elvis and Jim Morrison are hanging out on a farm somewhere in the Midwest? Probably not. But it is astonishing that a man once seen as dead by millions on a national memorial is very well alive. At the very least, it should teach us all to never give up. There’s always a chance of survival with the incredible power of human will.

John found a way to escape the prison and ended up in the care of a Vietnamese woman who nursed him back to health. He married the woman, assuming the name of her late husband. Not only did the former master sergeant survive the helicopter crash though, he also persevered after being captured by the enemy. By his accounts, John Robinson was held prisoner by the enemy for over a year. Torture and starvation created doubt in Robinson’s mind that he could survive. But he did.

T

he fifth of May is known in Mexico, and cities around the United States, as Cinco de Mayo. It is a cultural holiday that celebrates the victory of the outnumbered Mexican Army, lead by General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguin, over the French at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Often, May 5 is mistakenly called Mexican Independence Day. Actually, Mexico

Modern celebrations feature plenty of flowers in the colors of the flag of Mexico: green, white and red. Parties and parades are held, and mariachi music and folk dancing are a traditional part of the holiday. A large variety of wonderful Mexican foods also are served.

somehow more prevalent in Sparks’ novels than real life.) At this point, you could write a new Nicholas Sparks movie with a Mad-Libs style fillin-the-blank game. We all know in which act the two most attractive characters will get together, and predict which minute some ridiculous obstacle will pull them apart. In “Safe Haven,” the last bit gets so silly that you might actually get some entertainment for your money. “Jack Reacher” (PG-13) -- Hollywood introduces a new serial hero to the big screen, possibly starting a new franchise hero. Tom Cruise plays Jack Reacher, and Iraq War veteran turned lone-wolf investigator. When a shooting spree leaves six seemingly random victims dead, the cops grab a suspect, and it looks like an open-and-shut case. Reacher gets on the job and starts pulling apart a tangled web of deception. This is a tight, hero-centric thriller. Cruise can still play the action-man, and he does so

well here. Reacher has a mind like Sherlock Holmes -- as skilled at detective work as he is in sudden combat. Even if the mystery isn’t mind-blowing, the action sequences in this flick make it an attractive rental. “Upstream Color” (NR) -- You may not understand this movie on first watch, but you definitely will remember it. In the film, there is a rare little creature that can cause someone to lose free will and be put under direct control. But that’s not even scratching the surface of what the film is about. This bizarre and unique film is the product of a virtual one-man-band. Shane Carruth wrote, directed, produced, composed the score and co-starred in the feature. He even worked as camera operator and one of the editors. This one guy had all of those jobs, and managed to do them all well -- creating an original, odd and brilliant movie. “The Oranges” (R) -- Nina (Leighton Meester of TV’s “Gossip Girl”) comes back home to suburban New Jersey, and ends up

16

with the wrong boy next door. Nina is 24, and a handsome young man (well, Adam Brody) has been her neighbor her whole life. Too bad she falls for his dad (Hugh Laurie of TV’s “House.”) This little situation produces no real laughs. Despite a decent cast, the film doesn’t have anything that real families can latch on to.

In many states such agreements are perfectly legal – for example, New York. However, in Colorado they are almost always not enforceable. Even if your employer is headquartered in a state (or nation) where non-competes are enforceable, and even if the agreement states that it is the law of that other state (or nation) that controls the agreement, it is - as matter of public policy and conflict of laws rules - the law that employment relationships and contracts are governed by the law of the state in which the employee actually works. So if you work in Colorado at least a majority of your time, Colorado law controls. And Colorado laws says these noncompetes are almost always void as a matter of public policy.

• When the time comes, treat the expense of a funeral as you would any other large expense: comparison shop with at least two funeral homes.

SAVE ON FUNERAL COSTS

D

o you know the cost of a funeral? If not, you’re not alone. A recent poll by the National Foundation for Credit Counseling found that 83 percent of respondents had no idea of the costs or the financial responsibilities of a funeral. The average cost of a funeral can run between $7,000 and $10,000. If you’re responsible for a funeral, you’ll need to interact with the funeral home; acquire a headstone, likely from a marble supplier; and consult with the cemetery for a plot. While the funeral home can put these together in a package, all cost money. In addition, you’ll need to consider use of a hearse, a limo to bring people to the funeral, multiple death certificates (every agency will want one), an organist for the service, clergy or minister, flowers and obituary notices in the newspapers. The NFCC has some suggestions for making a difficult (and expensive) time a bit easier. • Know in advance the funeral preferences of your loved ones. Make sure your own wishes are known as well by others in the family. Put these in writing and give copies

• By law, you must be given an itemized statement of the costs of goods and services being purchased. Barring specific costs, a good faith estimate must be given to you. Federal Trade Commission rules apply here, too, when it comes to the purchase of a casket. For example, you cannot be charged a fee for using a casket that is purchased elsewhere.

• Know the laws of your state, as they vary. Understand which are optional and which are required. Some funeral homes, for example, require embalming when there is to be viewing and visitation, while the state laws don’t require it. That might be an optional expense you can avoid. • If you purchase a pre-arranged funeral plan policy, know your state laws, and be sure your family knows you have it. For more information, go to www.consumer.ftc.gov and put “funeral” in the search box. There are nine articles with information on different aspects of arranging a funeral.
