ner refuses, there is hope on eliminating most buildup. For a good scouring paste, mix 1/3 cup baking soda, 1/3 cup borax with 1 teaspoon dish soap; then add tiny amounts of water until you have a paste. Scoop this mixture onto a “Dobie” or cellulose sponge and scrub. Rinse thoroughly with water and a sponge or rag, as the paste will leave a residue. This paste is very effective on sinks and countertops as well. You will be impressed at how your faucets will shine. Showers/ tubs made out of fiberglass scratch very easily, and it is recommended that a Dobie sponge or soft cloth be used for this application. Toilets are a beast all in themselves. Those plastic brushes just do not get up under the rim. The only cleaning tool that can get every nook and cranny of your toilet is the good old-fashioned hand. So slap a pair of gloves on and go to it. Borax is a great disinfectant! Take ½ cup of borax and mix it with 1/8 cup water and 5 drops of dish soap. Using one paper towel, dip into the mixture and apply to the toilet starting at the tank top, moving downward until you have covered the entire outside including the seat, finishing off with putting the remaining mixture into the bowel and rubbing it in entirely under the rim, not leaving one area untouched. Throw away the paper towel and get two new ones and start wiping dry the entire toilet and seat. While flushing the toilet, swish the paper towel in the bowl to get rid of any residue.

from forming. However, once mold gets into the caulking of your shower, the only way to get rid of it is by replacing the caulk. A great cleaner for the bathroom floor is to add 1/2 cup borax with a few drops of dish soap to a bucket (2 gallons) of hot water. Before you start washing the floor, go around the bathroom and wash the towel racks and toilet paper holder with this solution and wipe dry.

f your family is anything like ours, than Garlic is a staple ingredient in your kitchen. We like to add it to everything from spaghetti to mac n’ cheese in our house. Yum! Also around our house garlic is used as a natural garden pesticide. Just mix together garlic, cayenne and soap! It even seems to have an effect on keeping rabbits and deer away. Of course try not to spill any on your clothes or you’ll be keeping more than bugs and deer away! In addition to making a great Chimichurri sauce garlic has been said to help prevent certain kinds of cancer, work as an effective acne treatment and keep vampires away. And since we eat plenty of garlic at our house and I’ve never seen a vampire, it must work!

Now, how do you grow garlic? Well, first thing you need to do is prepare your planting site. Choose a sunny location that gets at least 8 hours of sun. Then like any new planting area, it needs to be amended. Add about 2-3 inches of good compost and then a tsp. each of blood meal and bone meal for every garlic clove to be planted. Work that into the soil about 6-8 inches down. Good amending is going to pay off later! Each bulb can then be separated and each clove planted, with skins on, 3-4 inches deep. One of the most important tips is to plant the first week of October because the time of planting greatly affects the size of your bulbs at harvest. You can cover your planting site with a thick layer of straw or, according to a local garlic grower, dried comfrey leaves which add nutrients to the soil that are very beneficial to garlic. After this continue to water as needed throughout the fall and into the spring keeping the soil moist but not soggy. In the late spring fertilize every few weeks and break off any flowers that appear. This will send the energy back down to the bulb and you can use it to cook the same way you use the clove! Harvest mid summer when the leaves start to brown and the bulbs are big, usually around the end of July. Cure your garlic by setting your bulbs on a newspaper in a well ventilated spot out of the sun and in about 2-3 weeks your garlic will be dried and ready to be used and stored. Don’t forget to save some of your biggest bulbs for replanting in the fall!

aby boomers are turning 65 at the rate of 10,000 per day. When we do, we’re eligible to sign up for Medicare. Allsup, a provider of services for those of us who have Medicare plans, has outlined in a newsletter some of the facts we need to know about signing up for Medicare. Taking the right steps at the beginning is crucial -- and difficult because of all the choices that have to be made.
We are a federally designated debt relief agency pursuant to Title 11 of the U.S. Code, to help people file bankruptcy
When can we sign up? Three months before we turn 65, the month we turn 65, and three months afterward. If you’re still working at age 65 and have a group plan through your employer, you might be able to keep that coverage. Check with your employer’s healthcare administrator for specific questions.
You are invited to Mountain View Electric Association’s 72nd Annual Meeting of Members
If you have a high income ($85,000 for individuals, $170,000 for couples) you’ll pay increased rates for your premiums for Part B, as well as for drug prescriptions. The income figure to be used is your Modified Adjusted Gross Income from your tax returns two years ago. Your best bet: Begin studying Medicare on your 64th birthday. Go to the Medicare website (www.medicare.gov) frequently and become comfortable with all the choices and decisions. Then, when the time comes, you’ll know how to handle your Medicare options. THE CASE FOR BACON By Nick Yanez
T
here are many secrets to living healthy. Most experts (whoever they are) say that a balanced diet with exercise is the ultimate way of taking care of your body and mind. Of course experts aren’t always who we want to take advice from. The best advice is given from those who have been there done that. Last week, a journalist for an NBC affiliate interviewed a 105-year old woman who leads an active and healthy life. The idea of the interview was to help give older folks a hint on how to stay fit and sound of mind. The woman, Pearl Cantrell, gave an unexpected answer when asked what the secret to her diet was. It was everybody’s favorite fatty-meat: Bacon.

The moral appears to be moderation -- moderation in the sense that meat would have to take the form of a small side dish rather than the centerpiece of a meal, but moderation nonetheless. That, and as always, vegetables.”

“High consumption of red meat was associated with significantly increased mortality...
Red meat as a side dish, huh? Can anybody name the perfect candidate out of all the red meats, to be a side dish? You nailed it - bacon. Looks like Pearl has it all figured out. In fact, she was rewarded for her kind comments towards the breakfast meat. Upon hearing the story, Oscar Mayer personally delivered bacon to Cantrell in one of its famous Wienermobiles. Talk about a rare day for someone in their hundreds. But then again, Pearl Cantrell doesn’t seem to live by the rules of an aging woman; just one who chooses to enjoy the life ahead of her.

A study by The Atlantic debunks popular thoughts on red meat. In their report, they explain that eating too little of red meat can actually cause health problem’s at a young age. This is because red meat holds many essential vitamins (protein, iron, zinc, vitamins A and B) that your body needs and wants. Of course too much steak, hamburgers and bacon can, and likely will, get you into trouble. Processed meats are very suspect to the human body. But it’s not all bad. We just have to learn to hone it in. A quote from the study says the following:
“I love bacon, I eat it everyday” said Pearl when asked about the controversial breakfast meat. Let’s face it, Bacon is delicious. But why have we always been told to stay away from it? Several studies say that red meat is bad for the heart. Men and women who already have heart issues are told to stay away from it altogether. Along with alcohol and smoking, red meat has been the target of health professionals for years. More so, it seems bacon is the number one target at times. Which is what makes this situation so unique and wonderful. It gives hope to all of us who love bacon.

T
hroughout the years, my favorite Mother’s Day gifts have always been the ones that are hand-written and homemade. This year, I’m looking forward to another one of my husband’s special breakfasts. Michael’s kitchen skills are limited to coffee and egg dishes. I don’t drink coffee, but I love the way he makes breakfast. It makes Mother’s
The recognition of motherhood has its roots in the spring festivals and celebrations of the ancient Romans and Greeks. The tradition continued with the advent of organized churches and honored Mary, the mother of Christ, during the fourth Sunday of Lent. Later, Mothering Sunday, an English holiday, was created to celebrate all mothers. The tradition of a special holiday just for Mother’s began in the United States more than 150 years ago. In 1872, Julia Ward Howe, author of The Battle Hymn of the Republic, began organizing an official mother’s day on June 2 to celebrate peace and as a protest against the futility of one mother’s son killing another during the Civil War. This more political observation of mother’s day soon died out. Later, Anna Reeves Jarvis wanted to raise awareness about the poor health conditions in Appalachia. She started “Mother’s Work Day Clubs”

She also lobbied President Taft and President Theodore Roosevelt to start a national holiday. It took several years, but on 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a bill recognizing Mother’s Day as a national holiday. The House of Representatives also adopted a resolution recommending that officials of the federal government wear white carnations on Mother’s Day. Over the years, Anna M. Jarvis became violently opposed to the commercialization of Mother’s Day. “I wanted it to be a day of sentiment, not profit.” She was arrested for disturbing the peace during a public protest in 1923 and fought to stop the sale of flowers. While Mother’s Day has become one of the most popular days to send flowers, dine out and make long-distance calls, Anna M. Jarvis’ original mission to honor and recognize the contributions and sacrifices made by mothers should not be forgotten. Make sure your Mother’s Day starts off in a special way with this deli-

It’s ethereal, thoughtful and kind of sentimental at its heart. Actors play different characters across the six stories, suggesting that old

souls are living new lives. Tom Hanks delivers fine performances in his different roles. The film is full of excellent visuals and special effects -- except for some of the makeup. Hanks especially looks odd in a few of his roles. It’s hard to mask that famous face and make someone so recognizable look like he’s from a different time and ethnicity. “3:10 to Yuma” (Criterion Collection) -- This 1957 classic Western is now available on Blu-ray. Dan Evans (Van Heflin) is a dirt-poor frontier rancher who captures a deadly outlaw, Ben Wade (Glenn Ford.) While they wait for the train, Ben offers the poor rancher $10,000 to let him go. Wade’s gang mount up to rescue their leader, while the townspeople get antsy about the outlaw in their midst. This is one of those Westerns where mind games are more prominent than gun fights. There’s plenty of bang bang shoot’em up, but the real tension comes from master-
ful movie-making. Watching the two main characters try to pick each other apart as the minutes tick down to 3:10 is like watching a spark sizzle its way toward a powder keg. “Liz & Dick” (NR) -- This made-for-TV biopic about Liz Taylor (Lindsay Lohan) and Richard Burton (Grant Bowler) fails on a few levels. It begins with Lohan’s deadeyed stare going straight into the camera. She’s no Liz Taylor, and doesn’t seem to be trying, either. Which is sad, considering that the whole affair was about venerating an icon while reviving the burned-out starlet. It also misses the mark for tolerable campiness -- the last ditch appeal for movies like this. “Tomorrow You’re Gone” (R) -- Charlie (Stephen Dorff) is a small-time tough guy, fresh out of prison. His life was saved by a devilish criminal called The Buddha (Willem Dafoe). Now, Charlie has to commit a murder to repay his debt to the shadowy figure. Somehow, a porn actress (Michelle
16
Monaghan) gets involved in the extra-thin plot. The movie hints that Dorff might be without all of his marbles -- but it’s hard to care with a character this boring. Lots of grimacing and shadows, a little bit of partial nudity, not a lot of thrills.

On Broadway in New York City, atop the 40story building that housed the Mutual of New York Insurance Company, also known as M.O.N.Y., Tommy James often saw a huge neon sign flashing the short form of the company’s name. U
nder Colorado law, if you have a valid will in effect at the time of your death, you are testate. This means that your estate can be quickly and inexpensively probated (even by a nonattorney), in informal probate proceedings, without any litigation, court appearances, or the like. If you have no valid will in effect at the time of your death, you are intestate. This means that (with few exceptions), unless all of your assets are being held in trust, in joint tenancy with right of survivorship, or have beneficiary or payable on death designations, your estate will need to be formally probated. Formal probate is extremely difficult without an attorney, more expensive (almost always MUCH more expensive than paying an attorney to draft a will), and much more time-consuming. The Colorado Probate Code’s statutes pertaining to intestacy will determine who inherits your probate estate, based on legal

For example, if you die with no parents or descendants (children, grandchildren, and so on) surviving you, your spouse gets your entire probate estate.
In most cases if you die intestate with a spouse and children, your spouse still gets your entire probate estate. This is true so long as: (1) all of your descendants are your spouse’s descendants also; AND (2) your spouse has no descendants, who are not your descendants also, living at the time of your death. If some or all of your descendants are not also your spouse’s children, or if your spouse has descendants that are not also yours who survive you, then things get complicated – too complicated to go into here. If you die without a surviving spouse, your children (all of them) will inherit your entire probate estate in equal shares. If you die without a spouse or any surviving children your parents will inherit your entire probate estate in equal shares (unless their parental rights were terminated at some point).

If the intestacy laws would result in the same distribution of your probate estate as you would choose under a will or all of your assets would be non-probate assets, and if you don’t care that your heirs will get stuck with the bills and the time delays of formal probate, then you may not need a will. Otherwise, yes, you need a will!

This changes, of course, if you have made a “designated beneficiary” agreement and recorded it with the county clerk and recorder before your death. In that case, assuming no spouse survives you, that designated beneficiary takes the place of a spouse in the above scenarios (this permits same sex partners – or others, for that matter - to have the same rights under the intestacy laws as a spouse).

5. “Leader of the Pack,” by the Shangri-Las in 1964. The song required 63 takes, as none of the music was written down. According to legend, to add the opening sound, a motorcycle was driven into the building.

A small boy swallowed some coins and was taken to a hospital. When his grandmother telephoned to ask how he was a nurse said ‘No change yet’. A new type of broom came out, it is sweeping the nation. Smaller babies may be delivered by stork, but the heavier ones need a crane.

WISDOM FROM BUFFETT
L
ast weekend I had the opportunity to spend the day with the third richest man in the world, Warren Buffett. Of course, I was there with 35,000 of his other closest friends for the annual shareholders meeting for Berkshire Hathaway. As has become a tradition, Buffett with Vice Chairman Charlie Munger, for 3 1/2 hours, answered questions on a variety of topics – everything from GEICO’s underwriting challenges to Berkshire’s succession plans and most importantly for me, their wisdom on investing. Here is some of what I took away.
Know What You’re About The financial markets are an expensive place to learn about who you are. If you don’t know your investment goals, understand your ability to tolerate risk, recognize your emotional temperament and your financial strengths, the markets will teach you, but at oh what a price. After the tech bubble burst in the early 2000s I started working with a client who had lost better than two thirds of their retirement investments. I made the comment, asking, “how did you get into these investments, you didn’t have a clue to the risks you were taking on?” His response was “I do now.” Lesson learned, know yourself first.
Stay Sane When Everyone Else Is Going Crazy In 2007 at the market high, more money was invested in the stock market then ever before. In 2008 and 2009 more money was withdrawn then ever before. Buy high and sell low that is the secret to financial ruin. For the investors who kept their heads and stayed with their plans, they not only survived the Great Recession but in many cases they thrived. Don’t let panic or exuberance be your financial guide.
Invest In What You Know Every day are bombarded from all sides with investment opportunities that promise to be the newest the greatest and the best – success without risk. Before you invest make sure that you know how an investment makes money, how you can profit from it and how it fits into your overall plans. If you can’t explain an investment to a ninth grader, you probably shouldn’t be
putting your hard earned savings at risk.
Recognize Opportunity
Honoring God with Your Financial Blessings
Opportunities will present themselves. Our job is to recognize them. By understanding what your investment goals are and being open to alternatives, you position yourself to take advantage of new opportunities. In 2009, as we approached the market bottom, investors seeking income had a wonderful opportunity to buy bonds at incredibly discounted price. For those who did, not only, did they secure a high level of income, they were also rewarded with substantial capital appreciation.

Be Willing To Act – Fast When all the lights are green, take action. Too often we wait, we procrastinate, we find reasons not to act and unfortunately the opportunity is lost. As Buffett said the market doesn’t count balls or strikes. You can wait for the perfect pitch and when it comes swing the bat. Opportunity waits for no one.
Trust Your Managers Whether you’re working with a financial advisor, and I hope you are, a banker, insurance agent, stockbroker or mutual fund manager trust your managers and the experience they bring. Warren Buffett and company bring to us as investors a plethora of experience and success. Buffett successfully turned $100,000 into the fifth largest company in the world. He did it by staying true to his values and understanding the markets and himself. If you would like to find out more, I would encourage you to review his letters to shareholders. You can find them at the Berkshire Hathaway website. Anyone serious about investing will find the time well spent. “The way of the fool seems right in his own eyes, but he who listens to advice is wise.” Proverbs 12:15 Chuck Maher is a Certified Financial PlannerTM practitioner specializing in Christian values based financial planning and investing.
