ast-paced athletics at its finest. That’s what you can expect from the World Cup soccer tournament. But you can also expect theatrics that could rival any Broadway play and unruly crowds that have literally killed each other in their excitement or frustration. As a worldwide competition, this event garners a lot of attention from countries on every continent (minus Antarctica for obvious reasons). How did such a massive competition come to be? Snippetz has got it covered. Read on to find out the scoop behind the World Cup!

By 1904, the world realized how popular soccer was becoming and FIFA was formed. The idea was to create a place outside of the Olympics where international soccer matches could be held and the first FIFA tournament was held in Switzerland in 1906. It’s said, however, that FIFA’s initial tournament was a complete flop.

First off, it’s important to note that the World Cup is formally called the Fédération Internationale de Football Association World Cup or the FIFA World Cup. Why is that important? There are many other types of World Cup tournaments, ranging from baseball and softball tournaments to canoe slalom and boxing. In all, there are about 62 different World Cup competitions; however, the FIFA World Cup is arguably the most popular World Cup tournament. And it’s also important to remember that in just about every other country besides the United States, soccer is called football. That explains the football part of FIFA. In the interest of alleviating any confusion between American football and football everywhere else, we’ll just call it soccer from here on.

Sandwiched in between these two major competitions was a tournament organized by Sir Thomas Lipton in 1909. It was called the Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy tournament and was held in Turin, Italy. This tournament differed from all others because individual soccer clubs, one from each country, competed rather than amateur players mashed together on a team. The World Cup would come to be defined by this format, setting it apart from other international (and eventually intercontinental) competitions.
HISTORY OF THE WORLD CUP
Snippetz FUNDER ENLIGHTENING, INC. PO Box 789 Monument, CO, 80132
Soccer made an official debut as a competition sport in the 1908 Summer Olympic Games in London. England’s national amateur soccer team won the gold medal in both that Olympic Games and the one in 1912 in Stockholm, Sweden.
International soccer dates back to 1872, when Scotland played England in Glasgow. About 12 years later, the first international tournament was held in the United Kingdom, called the British Home Championship. By the 1900 and 1904 Summer Olympic Games, soccer matches were held purely for demonstration and entertainment; no teams were awarded medals.
• 1914 – FIFA officially recognizes the Olympic Games as a championship competition for amateur soccer teams worldwide and takes over handling the details of the event. • 1920 – Soccer becomes an intercontinental competition at the Summer Olympics by including teams from Egypt and 13 European teams; Belgium won the gold medal. • 1924 and 1928 – Soccer tournaments at both Olympic Games were won by Uruguay and represented the first two open world championship competitions. • July 13, 1930 – The first two games of the inaugural World Cup were played simultaneously; Uruguay went on to win the entire tournament to secure the title as the first World Cup champions in history.

WHERE IN THE WORLD IS THE WORLD CUP? At the outset, the World Cup tournament awarded the winning team with a trophy, originally known as the World Cup. In 1946, the trophy was renamed after the FIFA president, Jules Rimet. In 1970, after Brazil claimed its third tournament title, it was decided that the team could keep the trophy permanently. Apparently, someone other than the Brazilian team members felt the trophy was valuable because in 1983, it was stolen. Gone for good, the trophy is presumed to have been melted down by the culprits. But that wasn’t the first time thieves stole the World Cup. The trophy was stolen in 1966 right before the World Cup tournament was to begin. It was

housed in a display case in a stamp exhibition in London and even though it was under 24-hour surveillance, the crooks managed to make off with it. This time, however, the trophy was recovered, thanks to David Corbett and his dog Pickles. Pickles and his owner were on a walk through London when Pickles became intensely interested in a package wrapped in newspaper. The package turned out to be the World Cup.

MEETING ALL THE QUALIFICATIONS The world is broken up into six FIFA continental zones: Africa, Asia, North and Central America and Caribbean, South America, Oceania, and Europe. Qualifying tournaments help narrow down the field of teams hoping to participate in the World Cup tournament. Tournaments frequently start in each zone as early as almost three years before the actual World Cup tournament. Starting in 1938, the hosting nation of the previous World Cup tournament was automatically granted a spot in the final qualifying tournament for the following World Cup tournament. Defending champions were also given a spot. That privilege was revoked in 2006 so each team, no matter whether they won or hosted the last World Cup tournament or not, had to qualify just like any other team.

charged with making the decision finally settled on a design submitted by Silvio Gazzaniga from Italy. Measuring 14.2 inches tall, the trophy is crafted of solid 18 carat gold and weighs in at 13.6 pounds. The trophy is given to the winning team for that particular tournament and is handed over to the winning team from the last World Cup tournament. The previous winners get a gold-plated replica trophy which they keep…perhaps FIFA learned its lesson after the highly valuable Jules Rimet Trophy was stolen…twice.

for the World Cup tournament which was set to be played in Brazil, but the team chose to withdraw. The Indian team always played barefoot and FIFA required that all players must wear shoes. • Lucien Laurent of France scored the first goal during the World Cup finals and was also imprisoned by Nazis during World War II. • Following a huge upset by Uruguay against the Brazilian home team in 1950, two die-hard Brazilian soccer fans jumped to their death from the stands. • In 1978, Johan Cruyff from Holland was a no-show for the finals of the World Cup tournament. After lying about his motivation for 30 years, Cruyff finally admitted that “Someone had a rifle at my head and tied me up and tied my wife up in front of the children at our flat in Barcelona.” • Arguably, Austria’s greatest soccer player ever, Matthias Sindelar was offered a position on the German team for the 1938 World Cup finals since his home country had been annexed by the Nazis. He declined the offer and one year later, he was found dead in his bed, having suffered from carbon monoxide poisoning. No one knows for sure if he was killed, committed suicide, or if the tragedy was simply an accident.

While it’s not as easy as just having a tomato grow as a perennial there are several tips that make growing tomatoes, and even more importantly, harvesting tomatoes very doable! First of all choose the quickest maturing varieties of tomatoes. 55-75 days is preferred because ripening slows when temperatures drop. Determinate varieties of tomatoes are good choices for shorter growing seasons because they do most of their growing before fruit set and they tend to mature early. They are also great choices for containers and small gardens.

gentleman in Iowa has gone back to school, although not in the traditional sense. He’s found his way to the local elementary school, where he volunteers doing a variety of tasks -- not just a few hours a week, but every day. He’s 74 years old.
Here are some things you can do: • Help struggling students with math and reading at all grade levels. • Answer phones in the front office. • Help with building maintenance on an ongoing basis. • Teach art classes. • Assist with field trips. • Give presentations on a topic you know a lot about. • Organize bake sales. • Catalog, repair and shelve books in the library. • Give music lessons. • Chair an afternoon special-interest club.
Some days he spends time one-on-one with children who need help with math. Other times he helps those struggling with reading. During his “spare” time he reorganized the school’s library. His school feels lucky to have him.
We have the time; we have the experience. Who better than seniors to lend a helping hand at our local schools? To get started, call the school principal, the head of the PTA or the district offices.
All across the country there are schools in trouble. They’re victims of budget cuts that take away valuable resources, perhaps the resources that the kids need most. Instead of a reading specialist in each school, maybe that specialist is spread out over five schools, and too many kids are falling through the cracks. The federal infusion of “turn-

Here are six practical steps to take when you face gale-force winds: First of all, accept responsibility for yourself. This is your life and only you can live it. Even if your situation is the result of someone else’s actions, don’t waste energy blaming others. Don’t be a victim of circumstances, be a victor over them. You’re not a failure until you start blaming others. Second, look for the opportunity. In the midst of every setback there are ways to step forward. Winston Churchill said, “A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.” I promise you there is a silver lining in the storm clouds if you find it, so look for it!

Caroline chose to harness the wind and move forward. What did she do? She decided to follow her passion and start writing again. As she did, her friends commented on how her face lit up when she talked about writing. Although it still hurt when she thought about her old job and how it ended, Caroline saw that now her world was much bigger and her life more fulfilling.

Fifth, do something every day to move your life forward. Do not wait to be rescued, rescue yourself. Sixth, reset your sails and make the storms of adversity your friend. Like Caroline, your storm may blow you right to the place you need to be. So ask yourself, “Where do I want to be?” And go there with enthusiasm and hope.
You can learn from Caroline: don’t hide in the storm, harness the wind. The winds of the storm gave her the push she needed to be the person she wanted to be. It was the storm that prompted her to do what she might not otherwise have done.
Whatever you do, don’t hide in the storm; harness the wind. The great motivational speaker and writer Jim Rohn said, “It is the set of the sails, not the direction of the wind that determines which way we will go.” And you, my friend, are the one who sets the sails.
Everyone faces storms in life: unexpected financial set-backs, health problems, family troubles, and a thousand other unforeseen and often difficult struggles. If you’re not

MOMENTS IN TIME THE HISTORY CHANNEL
• On June 4, 1896, Henry Ford unveils the “Quadricycle.â€? The 500-pound vehicle had two driving speeds, no reverse, no brakes, rudimentary steering ability and a doorbell button as a horn. It could reach about 20 mph. • On June 7, 1913, Hudson Stuck, an Alaskan missionary, leads the first successful ascent of Mt. McKinley, the highest point on the American continent at 20,320 feet. Stuck and two others began the climb in March and faced challenges of difficult weather and a fire at one of their camps, which destroyed food and supplies. • On June 6, 1933, eager motorists park their automobiles on the grounds of the Park-In movie theater in New Jersey, the first-ever drive-in movie theater. Inventor Richard Hollingshead had come up with the idea in the driveway of his own house, where he perfected projection and sound techniques. • On June 8, 1949, Hollywood figures, including film stars Frederic March and Ed-
ward G. Robinson, are named in a FBI report as Communist Party members. The FBI report relied largely on accusations made by “confidential informants, supplemented with some highly dubious analysis. Helen Keller also was on the list of radicals.

SHINY NEW COINS By Nick Yanez
A
s we should be well aware, the internet has taken over the world. After Al Gore- err, sorry, several scientists and computer geniuses invented the internet in the 60’s, it was destined to become the worlds greatest tool. We have knowledge at our fingertips like never before. Want to know how old Clint Eastwood is, how to bake a pineapple upside down cake, or how many licks it does take to get to the center of a tootsie pop? Google it. You’ll find the truth, or an answer that sounds true enough to tell to your friends. You can create a photo book of your entire life, as well as reconnect with old friends with things like Facebook and Instagram. Entire companies and corporations live and die on the web these days. So do High School students. While some may hate those facts, they are undeniably true. We need the internet. We are dependent on it. It’s changed everything... almost. Perhaps the biggest change since the internet went public to the masses in 1994, is how we shop. With companies like Ebay, Amazon, and Craigslist, we can essentially find any obscure item we need and purchase it. In the late 90’s there was a lot of fear that went into buying things online; those worries have more recently subsided. With new laws and protection, shopping on the web has becoming easier and safer than ever before. Which brings me to this weeks interesting topic of conversation: The new and fabulous Bitcoin. A new form of credit, the bitcoin is starting to become a legitimate form of currency. For those who haven’t heard of it (which should be pretty much everyone at this point in time), the Bitcoin is a currency that is digital, and can only be traded online. Currently, a single coin equals about $130 U.S.

The internet has officially taken over the world folks. It has it’s own television networks. It has it’s own set of federal regulations. Heck, even Snippetz is online these days! And now, it has it’s own currency. The internet is kind of like the kids. They’re our future, like it or not. Someday, they’ll be forced to run the world. I guess the only irony is that they’ll probably have to sit back from the computer, step outside, and get some fresh air to do so. And with that, we wish them luck.

While the idea is far from complete, it’s the first major step towards a universal currency. Not one we would all be required to use, though, which is it’s strongest selling point. With so much business and trade being done over the internet these days, Bitcoin makes perfect sense. It could be a revolution in the credit industry, easily allowing business to be done around the world with one form of money. The Bitcoin could be like DVD. Remember when you walked into Blockbuster that one time and every single VHS had been replaced with a shiny new disc? It just happened so quick. Luckily, if the same happens to Bitcoin, you won’t be forced to throw away all of your old dollars and buy the new ones.

The Bitcoin Federation will continue making the push forward. While companies like MtGox have been proven fraudulent and made the news for it, other honest business types are trying to make it an advantageous trade opportunity for the entire world. A company in Georgia named CampBX is careful about what customers they allow to trade, requiring a government issued ID and utility bill from all users.

shrink those problem spots over time. Bottom line, there is no device or magic bullet for getting into shape. According to Ball, a combination of strength exercises, aerobic exercise and a sensible diet will, over time, put you on the road to health and fitness.
BLASTING BELLY FAT
W
ith all the gadgets and gizmos available that promise six-pack abs, you might think we should be a nation of strapping Adonises. However, the current U.S. obesity epidemic would indicate otherwise. Stephen Ball, University of Missouri Extension exercise physiologist, says sit-ups and crunches will tighten your abdominal muscles, but you will still have the same layer of fat sitting on top of those muscles. “Exercise equipment manufacturers mislead us with flashy infomercials showing beer bellies transforming into defined midriffs with the use of simple devices ... usually in just minutes a day!” Ball said. Aerobic exercises like bicycling, jogging or running are the best way to lose body fat, Ball says. These exercises raise your heart rate and cause your body to draw upon its fat stores for energy. The places where the body stores fat can affect health, Ball says. Exercise, and a sensible diet, will help
Include these belly-fat busters into a sensible diet: Eggs: They not only keep you satisfied longer, they also help you consume fewer calories all day long due to their high protein (about six grams per egg) and the healthy fat in the yolk. Organic eggs are high in omega-3s. When you combine omega-3s with exercise, studies have shown you can decrease abdominal fat. Almond milk: One cup of plain, unsweetened almond milk has 35 to 40 calories; a cup of skim milk has 90. It also contains no sugar and is fortified with calcium and vitamin D. Almond milk is available in a variety of flavors, including dark chocolate and vanilla. Chia seeds: These power-packed seeds help to lower blood sugar, reduce hunger and are a great source of omega-3 fatty acids.

1. Cover quinoa with cool water and soak for 5 minutes in a 4-quart pot. Soaking helps quinoa to cook evenly and loosens any dust, chaff or saponin (usually removed in processing), which can give the quinoa a bitter taste. Pour the quinoa into a fine mesh strainer and rinse under cool, running water while stirring the quinoa with your fingers. Shake the strainer to remove any water. Set quinoa aside. 2. Place milk and cinnamon (sticks or ground) in saucepan over medium-high heat and bring to a boil. Watch carefully as the milk can bubble up quickly and scorch. Stir in the strained quinoa and return to boil. Cover and reduce heat to low. Let quinoa and milk simmer about 10 minutes. Stir in sugar, vanilla or almond extract and a pinch of salt. Cover and continue to simmer until all the milk is absorbed, another 8 to 10 minutes. 3. Remove quinoa from heat and allow it to sit five minutes with lid on. Fluff quinoa gently with a fork and serve with milk, fruit, nuts, chia or flax seeds, or whatever toppings you like, and serve immediately. Makes 4 servings.

New DVD Releases for Week of June 3, 2013 PICKS OF THE WEEK “A Good Day to Die Hard” (R) -- In the fifth film in the “Die Hard” series, nothing good happens. Sure, there are explosions, car stunts and combat, but it all meshes into a soothing rhythm that lulls you to sleep. far away from stale plots, flat jokes and thoughtless screenwriting. John McClane (Bruce Willis) hears that his son (Jai Courtney) is being sent to Russian prison and decides to look into the situation. You could have a better time by wandering into a garage sale and looking through stacks of VHS tapes to find the blandest, most slapdash ‘80s action flick in the box. “Warm Bodies” (PG-13) -- This supernatural romantic comedy for young adults dares to make zombies loveable. After flesheating undead take over most of the world, love is still in the air. Enter R (Nicholas Hoult), a handsome youth-turned-zombie whose inner-monologue guides us through the movie. Turns out that being a zombie is a lot like floating through normal life. When R encounters a still-living girl named Julie (Teresa Palmer), his heart starts to beat again, and he’s able to suppress his urge to eat her brains. So maybe it’s not the love story of a genera-
tion, but it’s a lot better than expected. With surprising wit and style, “Warm Bodies” rises above the predicted level of Twilightbut-with-zombies. Check it out if you have a strong stomach and you want to see something cute. “Identity Thief” (R) -- Diana (Melissa McCarthy) has a love of shopping, especially when she’s using somebody else’s name to run up the bills. Sandy (Jason Bateman) is the victim of Diana’s scheme, so it’s his credit she’s ruining. When Diana skips her court date, it’s Sandy’s name on the arrest warrant. So Sandy flies from his home in Denver to fetch Diana and sort things out -thinking she looks harmless enough. What follows is a mismatched-duo comedy with a few giggles here and there. Most of the humor is meant to be shock-laughs, but it’s not surprising enough to be shocking in most cases. “Brooklyn Castle” (PG) -- This documentary focuses on five chess champions who

attend I.S. 138 in Brooklyn, N.Y., a school where almost 70 percent of students live below the poverty line. Where some schools have impeccable athletics programs with stunning records, this school develops students into talented competitive chess players. The film stunned audiences at festivals with its caring and up-close look at the lives of the teens -- none of whom see chess as just a game.

THE LAW ACCORDING TO STEVENS by Lisa Welch Stevens, Attorney at Law P.C.
DO YOU HAVE ANY EMPLOYEES? IF SO, DON’T PUT ANYTHING IN WRITING! © January, 2010 by Lisa Welch Stevens, Attorney at Law P.C.
M
y law practice is focused on business law, whether transactional (business formations and agreements and contracts) or litigation (suing over agreements, etc. gone wrong). I represent small businesses and their owners – “small” in the sense that the businesses, no matter how large their revenues, have only a few owners and/or employees. While I normally harp to my clients on the importance of putting everything in writing in order to protect themselves, there is one situation where I do not want my clients to put things in writing – and that is with respect to employment contracts or any documents spelling out the terms and conditions of employment.
Answers & Solutions
As I have discussed previously in Snippetz, Colorado is an “at will” employment state; if there is no contract of employment between the employer and the employee, the employer is the “king”: he can fire anyone at any time for any reason (or no reasons) whatsoever, and even for a completely horrible reason, so long as he is not an “employer” under federal discrimination laws. Thus, you absolutely do not want a contract of employment with your employees.
You may think this is easy to avoid: if you don’t have a “contract”, denominated as an “employment contract” or “employment agreement”, with your employees you are in the clear. Not necessarily so! Courts (yes, even Colorado courts!) have ruled that many other types of writings constitute contracts of employment.

has arisen between the employer and employee.
For example, employee manuals or handbooks have often been found to be sufficiently detailed and to make sufficient promises as to be, as a matter of fact (not law), contracts of employment. The more specific the terms, conditions or provisions of an employer’s employee manual, handbook, policies or guidelines are, the more likely a court is to find that a contract of employment, rendering those terms, conditions or provisions or policies or guidelines legally enforceable by the employee,
This problem most frequently arises when a client, to save money, either gets an employee manual or handbook form online or purchases one from an office supply store, inserts the name of his or her business, cuts and pastes various provisions, and then hands out the resulting document to his or her employees without having it reviewed by a Colorado attorney. Very rarely are any form business documents drafted with an eye toward Colorado law – we are simply too small of a state, business-wise, for it to be economically feasible for the form merchants to do so. A handbook, manual, policy or guidelines may not constitute a contract of employment in one state, but do so in Colorado.

The safest course of action for Colorado employers is to put nothing in writing regarding terms and conditions of employment. When in doubt, leave it out! MONEY MANAGEMENT FOR STUDENTS
P
arents who have a child going away to college have more to worry about than partying and failing grades. Two things are a given: 1) New students on campuses will be approached to sign up for credit cards, and 2) students need to know in advance how to handle the financial responsibility. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) has issued a special edition of its Consumer News to help young adults and teens manage their money and avoid financial scams. Here are a few places to start to get your student up to speed. Credit cards: Teach your child everything you know about credit-card use, even your own mistakes. Show them how to read the fine print on the disclosure, to be aware of the card’s limit (and how that limit can affect credit scores) and to pay off the full balance each month. Don’t apply for multiple cards (especially if the applications are being handed around on campus by zealous recruiters) and to take advantage of alerts from credit-card companies about payment reminders. If there’s any doubt about your child’s ability to handle payments, aim him or her

Credit reports: Students need to know that potential employers will check their credit history during the job-application process. Insurance companies will do the same, with monthly premiums partially determined by credit scores. At some point, a graduate will need a loan, perhaps for a first car. An initial credit history, although short, will help secure a lower interest rate. Picking a bank: As a student, your child will likely only need the most basic of services. If he or she is going away to school, start shopping on the Internet. You’ll need one close to campus that has the lowest possible fees. Check whether there are fees for falling below a minimum required balance, or for an excess number of ATM withdrawals or debit-card transactions. Plan to open an account at the same time you’re moving your student into the dorms. Guarding against fraud and scams: Your child needs to know to review bank and credit-card statements the minute they arrive, to keep personal information private, especially online, and to be suspicious of emails that appear to come from the bank.
