t’s no secret that Colorado has seen more than its fair share of fires in recent years. One year ago, residents fled the Waldo Canyon fire as it ripped across the face of the foothills we’ve come to know and love. Homes were destroyed, lives were lost and others were turned upside down in a matter of minutes. With the Black Forest fire still smoldering and the memories of last June still fresh in our minds, we at Snippetz decided now was the time to tackle the wildfire topic. What can be done to prevent such destructive and devastating events? Is there something more we should be doing to take care of our homes and property to avoid such tragedies? If they can’t be avoided, can we at least lessen or slow down the impact? Read on and find out some crucial tips to safeguarding yourself, your family, your property and your community.

So what are these techniques? Here are some to start you off on the right foot: • Smaller plants are better – when planting close to your house or other permanent structure, the smaller plants are usually the best. As we saw in the Black Forest fire, larger trees, especially dry or dead ones, tend to radiate a lot of heat and provide prime places for fire to jump from place to place.

Wildfire mitigation is a process by which you take certain precautionary actions to minimize or prevent the devastating effects of a wildfire on or around your property. Think of it like brushing your teeth; take the time to do it and your twice-yearly dentist appointments can often be a breeze. But skip out on those simple preventive steps and you could wind up in an extremely unpleasant situation.

• Keep plants away from siding – if a plant is touching the siding of your structure, it can easily spread the flames in a vertical fashion and set your structure on fire rather quickly.

When we speak in terms of mitigation, there are different approaches you can take, both of which can be highly important. For instance, some mitigation techniques call for modifying the area within your property so that your house, barn, garage, workshop, etc. are at a lower risk of being harmed. Other techniques require modification of the structure or moving it completely. Obviously that isn’t practical in every instance but it can provide just enough protection from the fire so that the structure doesn’t have to depend on fire suppression services or resources.

• Don’t attach your fence to your house – this is particularly important if both your house and your fence are made of combustible material. The fence is a perfect fuel source for a fire and the spread to your house or structure is so much easier when the two are connected. • Clean out the dead stuff – clear out pine needles, trash, debris, leaves, dead plants, etc. from around your property.

George Wilkins - Publisher

These materials are prime tinder for a fire. Don’t forget to get the stuff from under your deck. If that material lights up, your deck could ignite as well. • Replace old windows – installing dual-pane windows can protect the interior of your house or structure. The outer pane helps protect the inner pane, allowing for a more gradual adjustment to the increased heat from the fire and lessening the chances that the inner pane will crack. Once a window has broken, it’s an open invitation for the fire to come on in and do its worst. • Replace decayed wood on your house – this seems like a no-brainer but there are certain areas that you might not consider. For example, the wood around your windows is a perfect place for a fire to gain access to the inside of your house. Your deck is also a great place for a fire to feast, so replacing your old rotting one with a new composite deck is ideal. If composite materials aren’t feasible, get professional help with the construction so that the boards aren’t too far apart. This can allow a fire to spread from the bottom of the deck boards to the top more easily. Wildfire Mitigation... Continued on Page 3

• Keep your gutters clear – flying debris and embers can be extremely harmful, even if you have installed a fire-resistant roof (which is also an important mitigation step). They could potentially land on old, dried out leaves and other dead materials stuck in your gutters and flare up. • Trim the fat – in this case, we’re referring to the vegetation and trees around your house, not literally the fat. In many places where houses are located in forested areas, codes are put in place to enforce what that should look like. It’s best to become familiar with what is required in your area. One good rule to follow is that no part of a tree should be closer than six feet to your house or structure. If you MUST have trees (and many of us must), keeping them well-groomed and at the edge

of your property can serve as a wind block, helping prevent debris from getting to your house.

Naturally, this is by no means a complete list of mitigation techniques but it is a good jumping off point to safeguarding your house.

Beyond the standard mitigation techniques, some areas at increased risk of wildfires have come up with creative ways to handle wildfire mitigation. Take the Oakland Hills area of Oakland, Calif. In 2010, the Oakland City Council approved $1.75 million to bring in a herd of goats to graze on the

UNBELIEVABLE BLAZES • Oakland Firestorm of 1991 – fanned by the seasonal “Diablo winds,” this brush fire destroyed 1,520 acres and took out more than 3,500 houses, apartments and condominiums. Estimated cost: $1.5 billion • Yellowstone National Park, 1988 – this fire burned more than 2 million acres and took about 25,000 firefighters to finally get under control. • Miramichi Fire, 1825 – this forest fire spread across more than 3 million acres of New Brunswick, Canada and parts of Maine. It claimed at least 160 lives. • The Great Fire of 1910 – often referred to as the “Big Burn,” this fire

burned more than 3 million acres in Idaho, Montana and Washington. It claimed 87 lives, 78 of which were firefighters. • The Great Fires of 1871 – consisting of The Great Chicago Fire, The Great Michigan Fire, The Great Peshtigo Fire and the Port Huron Fire, this series of blazes occurred all in the same week. The most devastating: The Great Peshtigo Fire which claimed more than 1,500 lives.

• Family reunions are fun and worthwhile. Being together with many generations is a wonderful experience. Often, these gatherings are highly scheduled, but remember to set aside time -- and a designated place -to simply sit and talk. Here are some other great family reunion tips from our readers. -- JoAnn

• The Great Hinckley Fire of 1894 – this fire broke out in Minnesota and scorched more than 200,000 acres and left at least 418 people dead. This fire is remarkable for two reasons; one, the firestorm is said to have lasted only about four hours, and two, it took the life of Thomas P. “Boston” Corbett. Corbett is famous for killing John Wilkes Booth, the man who assassinated President Abraham Lincoln.

• T-shirts are fun for reunion memorabilia, but we also did water bottle koozies this year, and they were a big hit. You can write your name in permanent marker on one side, and then you can keep track of your bottle. -- B.F. in Georgia • We find that when planning our reunion, the young adults really like theme parties, so we always have a mixer theme night to start. We had a scavenger hunt for the children, where we collected clues about some of our more senior family members. To figure out who it was, the kids would listen to them tell stories and ask questions. What a great time for all! -- T.E.

Spanish scientists found that a Mediterranean diet can benefit cognitive function -- the ability to process thoughts -- more so than a plain low-fat diet.

LOCAL TOUR DE CURE CYCLING EVENT POSTPONED DUE TO FIRE Colorado Springs (June 14, 2013) – Due to the situation in Black Forest, the American Diabetes Association has postponed the Southern Colorado Tour de Cure, scheduled for June 22, 2013 in Colorado Springs, to September 21, 2013. “We do not want to place undue stress on the first responders or the community, put volunteers and participants in harm’s way, or divert the attentions that need to be placed on the efforts of the firefight and affected family needs,” said Kelly Jackson, Director – Tour de Cure. “Our thoughts are with the families that are affected, and the first responders and their families as they continue to fight the Black Forest fire.” All Tour de Cure participants, volunteers and sponsors are invited to at-

tend a Tour Gathering on June 22 from 11:00am-2:00pm, at Texas Roadhouse in Monument. This will be an opportunity for the Tour de Cure family to come together and support the community. Supplies will be collected for Care and Share to aid in the efforts of the Black Forest fire. Information on supplies currently being collected can be found at www.careandshare.org.

The participants (average age 69) were assigned different diets for six years. One, a Mediterranean diet, included extra-virgin olive oil and mixed nuts. The results for those on that diet were “statistically significant.” It’s thought that the diet not only reduced cognitive impairment, but also slowed its progression to dementia.

Southern Colorado Tour de Cure will take place on Saturday, September 21 at Mary Kyer Park in Colorado Springs. Routes include: 5K Walk/ Run, 10K Family-Friendly, Mountain Bike Ride, 50K, 100K and 100 Mile Century Ride. Riders that are currently registered and unable to make the new date are invited to participate in the Tour de Cure Colorado in Longmont, on August 17, 2013. For more information please visit: www.diabetes.org/socotourdecure.

Additionally, heart attack, stroke and related deaths were down by 30 percent. The key ingredient: olive oil. Apparently, a chemical in olive oil (polyphenol) clears plaque buildup from the brain seen

What does the Mediterranean diet consist of? A lot of vegetables. Lots and lots of vegetables. Specifically: Plant-based foods such as vegetables and fruits -- nine servings a day Grains, rice, pasta and no-salt nuts Whole-grain bread dipped in olive oil Virgin or extra-virgin olive or canola oil instead of butter No salt -- instead use herbs and spices Red meat no more than a few times a month Fish and poultry at least twice a week Fatty fish, such as mackerel, tuna and salmon, high in omega-3. Go online for recipes or check your library for Mediterranean diet cookbooks. Ask if your doctor thinks this kind of diet would be appropriate for you. MOMENTS IN TIME THE HISTORY CHANNEL

• On June 29, 1613, the Globe Theater, where most of Shakespeare’s plays debuted, burns down. The Globe was a round wooden structure with a stage at one end, and covered balconies for the gentry. The galleries could seat about 1,000 people, with room for another 2,000 “groundlings,â€? who could stand around the stage. • On June 24, 1803, Matthew Thornton, one of New Hampshire’s delegates to the second Continental Congress, dies at age 89. Because he did not arrive in Philadelphia until September, he missed the initial approval of the Declaration of Independence, but later added his signature to the document. • On June 26, 1911, athlete Mildred “Babeâ€? Didrikson is born in Port Arthur, Texas. At the 1932 Olympics in Los Angeles, Didrikson won gold medals in the javelin and 80-meter hurdles. She had qualified for five events, but women were restricted to three events at the Olympics. • On June 28, 1928, a 26-year-old Louis Armstrong and his Hot Five fellow jazz

instrumentalists record a song called “West End Blues. The technology didn’t allow for playback, so when Armstrong and his Hot Five ended their session, they hadn’t even heard the recording that is recognized as a critical influence, even on rock ‘n’ roll.

• On June 30, 1936, Margaret Mitchell’s “Gone With the Windâ€? is published. While recovering from a series of injuries, Mitchell began writing the story of an Atlanta belle named Pansy O’Hara. A publishing company later convinced her to change the name to Scarlett.

• On June 25, 1950, armed forces from communist North Korea smash into South Korea, setting off the Korean War. The United States sprang to the defense of South Korea and fought a bloody war for the next three years. More than 55,000 American troops were killed in the conflict.

• On June 27, 1976, a factory storekeeper in Sudan becomes ill and dies five days later, marking the beginning of the first Ebola virus epidemic. By the time the epidemic was over, 284 cases were reported. Scientists still do not know what causes the disease to return or how to cure it.

The Internet Can Help You Prepare For Fires

ALL THE CAT’S MEN

Series 9 Article 13

As we have experienced in the last weeks, wildfires spread quickly, igniting brush, trees, and homes. Meet with your family to decide what to do and where to go if wildfires threaten your area. Learn what steps you can take to help prepare and protect your home from an approaching forest fire or wildfire. www.usfa.fema.gov/citizens/h ome_fire_prev/wildfire You can’t read too much about fire safety. Read every resource you can. About.com is a great resource to find information about preparing your home and your family for fires: www.homebuying.about.com/ od/forestfiresandwildfires Forest fires can happen in or around any large wooded area. These fires are more prominent in locations that have hot, dry climates or a dry season like we’ve had lately, but they can ignite in any wooded area if there is a drought. This article will cover several steps you can take to prepare for a forest fire. www.wikihow.com/Preparefor-a-Forest-Fire

Fires are sometimes started by nature, sometimes by bad people, but many times by unknowing good citizens that get careless. Read through fire safety tips with your family and make sure that a mistake you make doesn’t end up costing you your family’s life, your neighbor’s lives or your homes. www.firesafetytips.com www.usfa.fema.gov/citizens/ho me_fire_prev Making sure your children understand the danger of fire is very important. Getting them to listen and understand the importance is not always easy. Here are some fire safety avenues you can use that are geared for children: www.kfst.net www.safekids.org/fire www.pbskids.org/arthur/firesafety www.firesafetyforkids.org/firesafety-rules.html VIDEOS FOR FIRE SAFETY A written list of fire safety tips is important, but sometimes the easiest way to learn for kids and adults alike is through watching videos. Go to YouTube.com and type “Fire Safety” into the search box. There are tons of videos and cartoons that teach fire safety.

drug violence, scandals, and an inordinate amount of journalistic deaths over the last two years. Which is why one very unique candidate is making a splash. His name is Morris. His platform? He will sleep most of the day and make for a great internet meme. A representative of the candidate says that Morris “does nothing (that) fits the profile of a politician”. That statement really resonated with the voters. Oh, also, Morris is a cat.

By Nick Yanez

I

t wasn’t long ago that we were at each other’s throats. The heated political battle of 2012 featured two completely different men. Mitt Romney, the business savvy billionaire, took on the charismatic incumbent Barack Obama. By the end of it all, both men appeared to be shaky, untrustworthy, typical “politicians”. Whether any of the scandals or dirty secrets of either candidate were actually true is a different subject entirely. The point is, by the end of the day, many were spitting out that phrase I hear every four years; picking the “lesser of two evils”. Now, throughout history, there’s been some classic political battles. There was the time we witnessed John F. Kennedy win the first ever televised presidential debate. It changed everything. Suddenly, image mattered. There was the time George W. Bush and Al Gore went into triple overtime for a last minute finish in 2000. There was also the 2003 race for governor. This thriller took place in California, when the mighty Arnold Schwarzenegger defeated heavyweights like Gary Coleman (actor), Mary Cook (adult film star), and Trek Thunder Kelly (who’s official tagline was “Dude. I want to be an artist living on the beach with $3,500 to blow...” (or something like that). The following Nick Snips is along the lines of the third election I described. There is true intrigue. It’s the Mayoral race of the century. The place is Xalapa, Mexico. The time, is now. In this race, like most, candidates from across all party platforms are competing against one another to convince the people that they can best lead the city to prosperity. Of course, that can be hard to sell to the citizens of Xalapa. The population of 450,000 people just ranked politicians as the least trusted institution in the country. It makes sense, the capital city of the gulfcoast state Veracruz has been ridden with

He would become the first of his race to ever win a mayoral race in his country. There is the case of Stubbs, of course, the honorary mayor in the quiet town of Talkeetna, AK. But this is a different thing altogether. With a win, Morris could change how society views the Cat as a race. Maybe this is the beginning of a major civil rights movement; where cats no longer quietly submit to the dictation of humans, but rather, have a positive and meaningful impact on world affairs. If for a moment you think this article is a petty joke, just the amusing ramblings of a reporter desperate for news, take into account the details. The incumbent party’s leading candidate, Americo Zuniga, has a facebook page to promote the campaign. That page has 33,000 “likes” as of last week. I know, hard to compete with that in a city of under 500,000, huh? Well, Morris the Cat also created a facebook page for his campaign. It has 135,000 “likes” and counting. In social media, Morris is dominating the polls. It also helps that Morris has the support of friends and respected locals. A professor at the local university, Giovanna Mazzotti, supports the candidate fully. He plans on attending the fundraiser for Morris. There is also the international support. P.E.T.A. recently wrote a letter to Morris’s human affiliates (owners) thanking them. The greatest support is by the only living creature who can relate to him, Stubbs the Cat. He has shown his support by posting the felines’ campaign spot on his personal facebook account. All there is left to say, really, is - Vote for Morris.

COUNTRY MUSIC LEGEND CHARLIE DANIELS TO PERFORM IN MONUMENT

O

n Saturday August 31st, renowned Country and Southern Rock singer Charlie Daniels will headline the inaugural Tri-Lakes Music Festival, organized by the TriLakes Center for the Arts. The concert will take place at the former Lake of the Rockies Campground east of Monument Lake. The concert grounds will open at 10 am with music to start at 11. Charlie Daniels and his band will wrap up a full day of music in the early evening. Charlie Daniels owns a Grammy Award and multi-platinum albums. He is a “Member” of the Grand Ole Opry and is best known for his hit song The Devil Came Down to Georgia. The Flying W Wranglers will open for the country star, and his performance will cap the all-day music event. Daniels has packed music venues throughout the United States for many years, and festival directors

There will be plenty of food and beverage on site. Come prepared to spend what will be a great day outdoors with your friends. Don’t forget sunscreen, your sunglasses, or your folding chair! Merrill Austin, Board President of the Tri-Lakes Center for the Arts, said “The TLCA has hosted some great acts over the past two years. Concerts by Ronny Cox, Willy Porter, and Colin Hay, the lead singer for the 1980’s band “Men at Work,” have been well received. We think Charlie Daniels will give many of our neighbors a great evening of music and will help to lay the foundation for future music events.” The open-air venue will provide great food service on-site, and up-close and satellite parking will make for an enjoyable day. A Wine Festival will be on site from noon until 6 pm. More than 2 dozen wines, matched with food will be presented. Tickets for the Tri Lakes Music Festival and the Wine Festival are now available on line on the Tickets West site, http://ticketswest.rdln.com/Artist. aspx?contentID=18376 The music festival will benefit the TriLakes Center for the Arts. GRILL IT! D

uring the summer, many people enjoy cookouts with family and friends. Grilling outdoors is particularly popular in my home state of Texas. While cooking outdoors is a wonderful way to prepare tasty, delicious dishes from meats to vegetables to desserts, it can be hazardous to your health if certain safety guidelines aren’t followed. Here are some tips for safe grilling: Preparing Meats for the Grill: • Buy ground meat and poultry no more than one to two days in advance. If it is going to be longer, freeze them. Larger cuts of meat, like steaks, should be grilled or frozen within four days of purchase. • Thaw frozen meat in the refrigerator or microwave before grilling. Meat thawed in the microwave must be cooked immediately. Food should never be thawed on the counter. • Marinate meat and poultry in the refrigerator. During grilling, avoid brushing the food with marinade that touched the raw meat. • Wash your hands before and after handling raw meat and poultry. • Hamburger patties should be made about 1/2-inch thick and 4 inches in

Transporting: • Transport meat and poultry in a cooler with ice, and pack the cooler just before leaving. Open the cooler as little as possible. • In order to prevent cross-contamination, raw meat and poultry should be kept separate from cooked foods and foods eaten raw, like fruits and vegetables. Pack drinks in a separate cooler. • The cooler should stay in an air-conditioned car during transportation and in a shaded spot once you’ve arrived. Only take out the amount of food you can grill at one time. Grilling: • To kill microorganisms, scrape and heat the grill before putting on the meat or poultry. • Grilled foods brown on the outside quickly, so the only way to correctly determine doneness is to check the internal temperature with a thermometer. Place the thermometer in the thickest part of the meat -- away from bone, fat or gristle -- near the end of the cooking time. Wash the thermometer between testing different meats and before and after each use. Recommended safe minimum internal temperatures are as follows: 145 degrees F for steaks, roasts and fish 160 F for ground beef and pork 165 F for whole poultry, chicken pieces or ground patties • Do not flip steaks with a fork; it can puncture the meat and cause bacteria to get inside. Put the herb butter on the bottom center of the plastic wrap, and form into a mound about 8 inches long. 2. David Blaine and Chris Angel) are stealing the spotlight. Don’t expect to be too dazzled. There are plenty of gags and giggles, plus the fun of seeing funny people playing funny characters. However, it’s not for everyone. It pushes the edges of PG-13. And the story is as predictable as a card trick. “The Call” (R) -- Halle Berry plays a Los Angeles 911 operator who is pulled into an unbelievable plot. A young girl (Abigail Breslin) has been abducted by a maniac Berry has dealt with before (Michael Eklund.) The movie has the look of a slick thriller, talent and commitment from the performers, and a race-against-time story -and somehow it all just falls apart. It’s a wonderful balance of fun and awful. It’s fun because of the scares that will make you jump in your seat. It’s awful because the movie is 30 minutes too long and uses up every suspense cliche in the box. It’s a heart-pounding ride through a ridiculous

world where people start running intently -- in no particular direction -- at any hint of tension. “No” (R) -- It’s Chile, 1988, and a young advertising whiz is called upon to bring down a brutal ruler -- with a catchy jingle. With violence in the streets and intense abuse of power on the rise, President Augosto Pinochet agreed to a vote; if a majority of Chile’s citizens vote “Yes,” he stays in power. If enough people vote “No,” then the country will have democratic elections. Rene Saavedra (Gael Garcia Bernal) has to make “No” sound appealing and hopeful. This based-on-a-true-story tale is funny, gritty, dramatic and thought-provoking. It’s a Spanish-language film, but “No” crosses the language barrier. “Upside Down” (PG) -- Two separate planets orbit each other so closely, that if you stand on high ground on one planet, you can wave to the people above as they stand on their planet. Adam (Jim Sturgess) lives on

the bottom planet, a polluted impoverished dystopian nightmare. He falls in love with Eden (Kirsten Dunst), a citizen of Up Top, the high-society planet hovering just above Adam’s slums. I had high hopes for this one: It promised to be a high-concept, visually spectacular, romantic, science-fiction thriller. That’s a hard promise to keep. The struggle of the young lovers has to wrestle with the movie’s pseudoscience and underdeveloped characters.

JUNE 24, 2013 ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Count to 10 if you must, but don’t lose your temper, despite that person’s (you know who!) efforts to goad you into reacting. Your restraint will pay off in a big way. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) This week finds you in a sociable mood, ready and eager to enjoy the company of family and friends. It’s also a good time to seek out and renew old friendships. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Patience is called for as you await a decision about that project you’re eager to launch. Meanwhile, try to set aside more time to share with that special person in your life. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Avoid becoming involved in a workplace dispute early in the week by insisting both sides submit their stands to a neutral arbitrator. Things begin to cool off by Thursday. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A suddenly disruptive family situation is best handled with a cool, calm and collected response. Wait until things settle to let off all that pent-up emotional steam.

PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A recurring problem surfaces once again. Maybe it’s time you used your creative talents to help you find a new approach to resolving it once and for all. I used to hate math but then I realized decimals have a point. A dentist and manicurist fought tooth and nail. Those who throw dirt are sure to lose ground. I used to do balance and rotations at an auto shop. I felt like I was just spinning my wheels and decided to retire. The man who fell into an upholstery machine is fully recovered. I think Santa has riverfront property in Brazil. All our presents came from Amazon this year. I got my job at the dentist’s office by word of mouth.

INVESTING FROM A BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVE

...BRING CHRIST INTO OUR FINANCIAL LIVES

YOU’RE 50 NOW WHAT?

S

o you just turned 50, or maybe you’ve been in your 50s for a while, retirement may still seem a way off, but it is fast approaching. Now is a good time for evaluating your retirement health, make adjustments as you need to and do what’s necessary to catch up. From here on out for every year you wait it will only get harder to make your retirement dreams real. Here are a handful of action steps you may want to consider taking now as the retirement clock clicks down.

Visit Your Doctor A financially successful retirement means little if you are not in good enough health to enjoy it. Make the time to visit with your doctor. Get a complete in-depth physical. Talk to your doctor about what screenings make sense for you and get them done. Find out what lifestyle changes you can make to insure that you enter retirement as physically healthy as you can.

Protect Your Income And Your Wealth Your income not only provides for your day-to-day needs it is also the primary funding source for your retirement plans. What would happen if that income stopped because you became disabled and could no longer work? For too many the funds that they have accumulated for retirement are quickly depleted to cover daily living expenses. Make sure that you have adequate disability insurance. If your employer does not provide it, consider obtaining coverage through an individual disability policy. Now is also a good time to look into longterm care insurance. Without it you run the risk of depleting your retirement funds in order to provide for necessary elder care including home healthcare, assisted living or nursing home services. Fifty is a good age to start investigating your options. As you get older long-term care insurance becomes more difficult to qualify for and more expensive.

Develop A Retirement Spending Plan There are all kinds of calculators and rule of thumbs for how much money you will need in retirement. Most are a good starting point, however a better approach is to invest the time to develop a realistic spending plan that supports the lifestyle you want in retirement.

Start now to systematically eliminate credit card debt. Consider paying off your mortgage before you retire and build up your emergency fund for those unexpected expenses.

Create A Retirement Portfolio Make sure your current investment allocation supports your retirement goals. In retirement you’ll want to have investments that can support the income you will need as well as provide capital appreciation to offset the loss of purchasing power due to inflation. Many financial advisors can stress test your portfolio to help you determine how your investments might perform in different economic environments.

Catch Up Don’t forget to take advantage of the catch-up provisions available through many tax advantaged savings accounts. For 2013 those over age 50 can contribute $5,500 in addition to the $17,500 limit to a 401(k) plan and $1,000 above the $5,500 maximum for an IRA. All of this may seem like a lot of work, and it is, but the effort that you put in today could very well be a determining factor for your success in retirement. The good news is that you still have time. Use it wisely.
