t’s the birthplace of Rice-A-Roni. Its Cable Car is world-renowned. It boasts the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz. It’s no wonder people have written about the city for decades. But it can’t be all about the rice or the transportation or the prisons. There’s got to be something more about the city that has drawn the artists and painters to its streets for inspiration. And naturally, Snippetz just had to find out what that something is. So read on and discover the hidden (and sometimes not-so-hidden) treasurers the City by the Bay has to offer.

THE GOLD RUSH
If you assumed that San Francisco is just a city in California, you’d be wrong. San Francisco is officially the City and County of San Francisco (as of 1856), the only city also to be a county in the entire state. This particular city/county measures about 46.9 square miles of land and has a population density of about 17,620 per square mile. That might not sound too impressive but it is the most densely-populated city in the state and the only other city in the U.S. that outdoes it in population density in New York City.
When James Marshall struck it rich mining for gold at Sutter’s Mill in 1848, the word spread fast. Although his partner John Sutter tried to keep the discovery quiet, he was unsuccessful and over the next seven years, about 300,000 people made their way to California to seek out their own fortune. With San Francisco being a main port and depot for the California coast, it also became an entryway for gold miners, resulting in a population increase of the city from 1,000 to 25,000 over that first year, 1849. These hopeful gold miners became known as the 49ers.

tory for the U.S. as well. On Jan. 30, 1847, Yerba Buena was renamed San Francisco.
(You probably aren’t surprised to know that San Francisco’s National Football League team, the 49ers happens to be named after those optimistic prospectors).
When Don Gaspar de Portolà led a Spanish exploration party that landed him in what would eventually be San Francisco in 1769, the area was already inhabited by the Yeluma group of the Ohlone people. Seven years later, the Spanish returned and established a fort at the Golden Gate (the span of water that separates San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean) and a few miles away, they built the Mission St. Francis of Assisi.
Back to the point. With all the new work suddenly to be had in the area, the city saw a huge influx of laborers from China. Many were eventually deported but San Francisco’s Chinese population had already laid down a solid foundation and it quickly became the largest Chinese settlement outside of Asia. In fact, San Francisco’s Chinatown remains the largest of its kind in North America.
The entire territory of California north of the Baja Peninsula, including San Francisco declared independence from Spain in 1821 and was quickly swept under Mexican rule. In 1835 however, an Englishman named William Richardson built a homestead near current-day Portsmouth Square and teamed up with Alcalde Francisco de Haro to begin creating a town they called Yerba Buena. American settlers flocked to the new town and on July 9, 1846 during the Mexican-American War, Capt. John B. Montgomery claimed Yerba Buena for the United States, two days after Commodore John D. Sloat claimed the California terri-
In the predawn hours of April 18, 1906, an earthquake estimated to have measured a 7.8 on the Richter scale shook the city to the ground. The San Andreas Fault had slipped more than 10 feet. The devastation was incredible with about 75 percent of the city destroyed by the quake and subsequent fires that are said to have burned for four days. About 3,000 people were killed and another 250,000 were left homeless. The city made a remarkable comeback and nine years later the Panama-Pacific International Exposition was held there. The exposition was an opulent world’s fair, showcasing “palaces” dedicated to things such as fine arts, horticulture, social economy, food products and education to name a few.
THE GOLDEN GATE GETS A BRIDGE
Probably one of San Francisco’s most recognizable landmarks is the Golden Gate Bridge. The bridge represents the only road connecting the San Francisco Peninsula and Marin County across the bay. Joseph Strauss, the engineer responsible for the bridge’s design had little knowl-

He oversaw the overall design and construction of the bridge but it was Leon Moisseiff who actually conceptualized the bridge that was eventually built. Construction on the bridge began on Jan. 5, 1933, costing more than $35 million by the time it was completed in April, 1937. The project came it at an unbelievable $1.3 million under budget when completed. The completed bridge spans 8,981 feet and had the world’s longest suspension bridge main span at 4,200 feet until 1964 when New York’s Verrazano-Narrows Bridge was built to connect Staten Island and Brooklyn; it spanned 4,260 feet. The Golden Gate Bridge sits 746 feet above the water and the weight of the roadway portion of the bridge is hung from two main cables, each containing 27,572 strands of wire measuring in at 80,000 miles of wire in total. It took about 1.2 million rivets to complete the bridge. Opening celebrations for the bridge began on May 27, 1937 and lasted for a week.
MORE ABOUT SAN FRANCISCO • The Gold Rush had more to offer the nation than gold. The miners needed tough clothing that was durable and would offer some protection. With that in mind, denim jeans were invented in San Francisco. • The Golden Gate Bridge is always being painted. By the time it’s
been painted from one end to the other, it’s time to go back to the beginning and start all over. • The first coffee shop to open its doors in the city is Caffe Trieste in 1956 and now there are over 300. • Speaking of coffee, San Francisco Chronicle writer Stanton Delaplane brought over Irish coffee after having it in Shannon International Airport in Ireland in 1952. He worked with the Buena Vista Café to entice them to start serving it. • The stock market crash of 1929 shut down more than 14,000 banks by 1933. Not one single bank in San Francisco failed. • It is illegal to walk down the streets of San Francisco if you are “ugly.” It’s also illegal to beat a rug to clean it outside of your house or apartment. And make sure you don’t walk an elephant down Market Street without a leash or use unwashed underwear to wipe your windshield because those activities are also illegal. • As the only moving National Historic Monument in the world, the Cable Car was built in 1873 and an estimated 9.7 million people make use of it each year. • The fortune cookie was invented at the Japanese Tea Garden by Makato Hagiwara, a Japanese immigrant in 1914. • There’s a rumor that bike sharing will become a viable transportation business/option for commuters in the city as of August 2013. The start-up plan includes 500 bikes that will be available in the downtown San Francisco area.

s gardeners we spend a lot of time tending to our plants. This almost definitely will include dealing with bugs. Many different bugs even. Big bugs, small bugs, beneficial bugs and then the kind of bugs we like to squish! For me this means aphids. Yes, I occasionally spend my time squishing aphids. I usually try to squish them in between a leaf so I don’t get them all over my fingers though. Why do I do this you ask? Well I find it to be the fastest and most effective way to remove them from my plants.
a potential pest to just about everything in your garden they are actually pretty fascinating creatures. Aphids overwinter as eggs on garden plants. When they emerge in spring and mature to adults they can then give live birth without fertilization. They only lay eggs as it gets closer to winter and until winter they only reproduce females. The new sets of aphids can then give birth in as little as 8-9 days! Well that answers our question on how they seem to multiply so fast. Wow! On top of that many ants will actually “farm” aphids. Yes, they actually take care of the aphids and even protect them from predators! Ants do this so they can harvest the sweet “honeydew” that aphids secrete. So now at least we know what we’re dealing with. Aphids are tiny, plant sucking creatures that come armed with body guards and have the ability to reproduce rapidly.
Now in order to get rid of aphids I find that it is incredibly helpful to do anything you can to knock the numbers down a little before applying a product or releasing ladybugs. I do this either by using my “squish” method, or by using hard spray of water. Product choices are endless and depend on what they are feeding on. For example, if they are feeding on vegetables or fruit trees you might want to use an organic spray or release ladybugs to make a feast out of your infestation. One Ladybug can eat up to 5000 aphids in its lifetime! On the other There are many products you can hand if you have a heavy infestation spray too, but even when I feel I on some very tall trees a systemic need to use a product I use it after I that works by going up through the practice the “squish” method. This plant might be necessary. of course, is pretty darn hard to do when they’re covering a tall tree or in very large numbers. It makes you wonder, how do they seem to just appear all of the sudden? And how Macie McCord are there so many of them?

f you’ve ever stood in the drugstore and wondered if you should take a dietary supplement, or wondered just what is in some of those supplements, the National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements has come up with a database that can help. The database, in conjunction with the National Library of Medicine, allows you to make a quick search online, browse dietary ingredients, browse products, get a list of manufacturers and do an advanced search of 17,000 supplements. I did a quick search for “magnesium” and got 223 results for magnesium in the product name, and 42 results for magnesium as a dietary ingredient. I searched for “Spring Valley,” the manufacturer of a relatively inexpensive line of supplements, and
It’s even included a My Dietary Supplements app to help keep track of vitamins, supplements and herbal supplements you might be taking. However, the My Dietary Supplements app [myds.nih.gov] might not work on your computer or phone. (It didn’t work on mine.) On a computer, it wants you to use Google Chrome or Apple Safari. The list of iPads, iPhones and other devices isn’t as limited. Instead, use the whole database at www.dsld.nlm.nih.gov/dsld/ and search for your information. If you hold the mouse cursor over the magnifying glass, you’ll even see a popup image of the label. Once you’ve found your information, be sure to ask your doctor if certain supplements are right for you. THE PUEBLO PICKER By Nicholas Yanez

t seems every day the world becomes more dangerous. All we hear about on television is the latest murder, burglary, or terrorist attempt. Perhaps this is why we are drawn to pieces of fiction that portray hero’s. In recent years, the Super Hero film industry has reached heights few thought possible. Trilogies featuring fictional vigilantes like Batman and Spiderman have broken records and dazzled the public. Midnight showings sell out. Regular actors are turned into A-list superstars. New director’s are transformed into legendary story tellers. Sure, the special effects are always good, but the reason we are drawn to these films is because it shows another side to the human condition; the good side. I’m going to paint a picture for you. Well, actually, I’m going to write a paragraph depicting the dramatic opening scene of a new Super Hero film. It starts like any other: We begin with the images of a quiet, still fairgrounds. Every ride has been turned off; every game booth boarded and locked up. It’s the middle of the night and evil is afoot. A mastermind thief and his two henchmen have broken into the fenced off area. They are looking for goods. Sure enough, they stumble on some valuable merchandise. They kick in the door, crack the safe, and make off with their millions. The next day, the owner of the mysterious missing jewels is devastated - he calls the commissioner. As the mustached captain and his deputies arrive on the scene, they begin collecting evidence. The police will do their usual routine and try to gather all the information they possibly can, but the
commissioner only has one thing on his mind. He knows it’s a job for their local Super Hero (Let’s say in this case, it’s Batman). Back at police headquarters, he lights the signal. As he waits upon the police station’s roof for the aforementioned hero, other officers are recovering the security camera’s footage of the victimized shop. They make a startling discovery... This is where things really get interesting. The commissioner is quickly called into the evidence room. There he sees something he does not believe. On the surveillance tape, clear as day, the thief on camera is Batman. Other than a few dramatic changes for effect (it is a movie, after all), all of the above actually happened at the Colorado State Fair last week in Pueblo. No, the door wasn’t kicked in and the safe wasn’t cracked. There was no safe, actually. Instead, a Television, Laptop, and an empty cash register (gasp!) were stolen from the Fair’s VIP building. Here’s the kicker. With two other men, the man now in custody was dressed as Batman while he performed the crime. Though, as un-cinematic as humanly possible. The robbery did not go as planned. After being caught on camera and accidentally locking themselves in the building they were robbing, the footage was aired on television. Once seen on the news, the boy dressed as The Dark Knight decided to do the only hero-like thing in this entire story, and turn himself in. Because the boy is just 16, police have not released his name. He has not ratted out either of his accomplices to this point. Why did I tell you this seemingly meaningless bit of Colorado based news? Well, for one, I thought is was entertaining; a good lunch story to tell your friends and family. The second reason is to destroy any false hopes you may have received from new hits like Iron Man 3 and Man of Steel. There are no Super Hero’s. No one is going to fly in and save the day. But, if you look close enough and decide to see those who perform good every day, you’ll find yourself surrounded by hero’s at each waking moment. Only then will you know there’s nothing to fear. CHIA SEEDS: HEALTHY OR HYPE?
M
ore than 30 years ago, the Chia Pet craze burst onto the scene as a fun tabletop plant. Now, chia seeds are being viewed in a different way: as a popular diet choice.
1. Soak one level tablespoon of chia seeds with a quarter cup of water to make an egg substitute for baking cakes and cookies. 2. Grind seeds and add to hot milk to make a “porridge.” 3. Add seeds to soup to thicken and add nutrition. 4. Grind seeds and mix into pancake batter, or into flour when making bread or biscuits. 5. Eat seeds whole and raw as a snack. 6. Make a “lassie” by blending chia seeds, yogurt and fruit juice.
“While chia is certainly a unique food with a strong nutrient profile, its claim as the next superfood may be a bit premature,” says Susan Mills-Gray, nutrition and health specialist with University of Missouri Extension.
7. Add seeds to beaten eggs, soak for 10 minutes and make an omelet.
Chia is an unprocessed, whole-grain food that can be absorbed by the body as seeds (unlike flaxseeds). One ounce (about 2 tablespoons) contains 139 calories, 4 grams of protein, 9 grams fat, 12 grams carbohydrates and 11 grams of fiber, plus calcium, antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids. Their mild, nutty flavor makes chia seeds easy to add to foods and beverages.
9. Add whole chia seeds to a cake batter to make a heavy, poppy seed-like cake.
Chia seeds are gluten-free and do not trigger a reaction for those allergic to nuts. However, Mills-Gray says, “If you have an allergy to sesame or mustard seeds or are on high blood pressure
8. Mix with Worcestershire or BBQ sauce and brush over barbequed meats.

It’s very filling and more nutritious than just tuna. 34. Add chia seeds to any spread, sweet or savory, such as peanut butter, jams, jellies and cream cheese. New DVD Releases for Week of July 15, 2013 PICKS OF THE WEEK “42” (PG-13) -- The most powerful sports movies often are the ones that show the connection between the game and the nation that loves it. In the story of Jackie Robinson, the actions of a few people make a profound impact on the society at large. This biopic focuses on his entrance into the major leagues, and his first two years there. The gravity of the story is the real of draw of the film, and the lead performances support

the weight. Chadwick Boseman plays Robinson as a guarded and solid man, capable of taking so much abuse without fighting back. Harrison Ford plays Branch Rickey, the manager who picked Robinson. This biopic takes the straightforward approach, leaving out anything that would distract from the significance of the true story. “Bullet to the Head” (R) -- Sylvester Stallone stars as a grumbly anti-hero in a buddy-action flick full of violence! While you could have deduced all this from looking at a poster, one thing you also should consider is that this movie does it well -- enough. Stallone is sharper and cooler than he’s been in the “Expendables” movies, the fights are tougher and the movie just looks better than most of the action-nostalgia movies flying around. It’s not a masterpiece, but it’s got those ridiculous, well-executed, memorable parts that make fun action-movies stand out -- like when Stallone and Jason Momoa (Khal Drogo from “Game of Thrones”)
fight with firemen’s axes. “Wild Bill” (R) -- A good movie, with all of the markings of a good Guy Ritchie movie: working-class Brits spouting pithy lines through gravelly accents, high crimes for low rewards, and a fair bit of roughhousing. Bill (Charlie Creed-Mills) gets out of prison to find that his ex-wife has left their two sons all alone. Bill wants to stay out of trouble, but crime has a way of pulling people back in. The title promises some Western influences, and indeed they come up. The big standoffs have that old spaghetti-Western feel to them. Ultimately, the strongest part of the film is that old bit called the “heart.” You can see the complicated nature of the father-son relationship. “Evil Dead” (R) -- Every year, Hollywood has to dig up some old horror classic, do a pointless remake, and watch us movie nerds shift uncomfortably in our seats. Not because we’re scared or grossed, out,
16
but because we’re conflicted. As much as I want to like anything “Evil Dead” related, this reboot of the 1980s classic just feels hollow. The story is as old as time itself -a handful of young adults go to a remote cabin in the woods, where they unwittingly unleash supernatural evil spirits. It’s loud, heart-pounding and full of guts. It can be enjoyed (perhaps better) if you haven’t seen the original.
