hink back to high school. Did you have to put together a family tree for a class assignment? Many of us did and may not have had the same resources available to us back then that kids have today. How much easier would it have been to just type in your name and start following the prompts a website or software package instructs you to follow. The true study of genealogy isn’t about taking the easy way to find your ancestors. It’s about uncovering the past and seeking answers to questions like, “Who am I?” or, “Where does my family come from?” As always, you can trust Snippetz to provide answers to some of the questions you may have about genealogy itself.

THE FIRST FAMILY TREE?

WHAT IS GENEALOGY?

You might be wondering where the idea of a “family tree” came from. Well, it’s said that the first image of a tree used to illustrate a family came from one created in medieval times called the Tree of Jesse. Supposedly, the Tree of Jesse depicted the genealogy of Jesus Christ based on what the Bible attributes to Isaiah’s prophecy.

The word “genealogy” comes from the Greek words “genea” and “logos,” translating to “generation knowledge.” Pretty self-explanatory. At the root of most genealogical studies is determining the location of one’s ancestors and key life events. In a fairly young country like the United States, people have literally come from every part of the globe; whether to make a new life, escape from an old one or simply because they had no choice in the matter. That creates a bit of a kink in knowing what happened to the generations before you.

The world’s longest family tree includes more than 80 generations and includes more than 2 million people. It was created by Confucius, a Chinese philosopher and educator who lived from 551 to 479 BC. His tree shows that he is a descendant of King Tang who lived from 1675 to 1646 BC.

And where would we be if a few celebrities didn’t partake in the family history hunt? Television shows like “Who Do You Think You Are?” which premiered on NBC in 2010, follow celebrities like actress Sarah Jessica Parker and ex-pro football player Emmitt Smith as they trace their family history across the country and sometimes around the globe. Although NBC cancelled the series in 2012 after airing three seasons, TLC picked up the fourth season which is set to air in July 2013. The celebrities slated to join the search are Christina Applegate, Jim Parsons and Zooey Deschanel, to name a few.

HISTORICAL IMPORTANCE In past centuries, knowing your family history was extremely important. Proving that your family had a better “pedigree” than someone else’s could be the difference between getting married to a powerful viscount and getting pawned off on someone who just really wants the dowry.

In September 2009, the Confucius Genealogy Compilation Committee spearheaded an international effort to retrace Confucius’s steps and revise the tree if needed. The most recent edition of that family tree is said to contain 1.3 million members currently living all over the world.

There are other things to consider as well. For instance, in medieval times, particularly in Europe, there was a doctrine called Divine Right. This idea emerged after the Protestant Reformation as a way to justify the absolute power and authority given to the king, both in spiritual and political matters. The Divine Right claims that the right to rule was bestowed on someone directly from God. To question the authority of the king was seen as akin to

Another important family tree is called the Lurie lineage. This extremely old and large family tree, which is said to contain Sigmund Freud and Hezekiah

questioning the will of God. It’s likely not a huge surprise to find out that several kings of the time strongly supported the idea. King James I of England, who also ruled as King James VI of Scotland was one proponent, as was Louis XVI of France. However, by the late 1600s, the idea didn’t hold as much appeal and by the late 1600s, England had abandoned the doctrine entirely. If Divine Right had held up through modern times, the ability to prove that you are descended from the king whom God bestowed absolute power upon would be significant. Tracing the bloodline of such a king could ultimately settle any debate regarding who should be the ruler, especially if you consider that these kings said God had given them the power.

PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS Of course, that previous example was a “what if,” so what exactly would someone in modern times use a family tree for other than for personal interest? For starters, knowing your family history could help determine a family’s health history. In cases of inherited diseases, family health histories are very important to help determine the likelihood of inheriting or passing a disease on to the

next generation. In some countries like England, Scotland and Ireland, names are determined in large part to the child’s ancestors’ names. Here’s how: If the child is the couple’s first son, he is usually named after his paternal grandfather. The couple’s second son is usually named after his maternal grandfather. Their third son would be named after his father and the fourth would be named after his father’s oldest brother. Girls aren’t left out of this naming pattern. The couple’s first daughter is often named after her maternal grandmother; the second daughter is named after her paternal grandmother; the third is named after her mother and the fourth is named after her mother’s oldest sister.

Next time at the boutique or store, grab three sizes of the item and try them all on. Don’t stick to a certain size. MEDICARE CHANGE IS HUSH-HUSH

t used to be that if seniors received physical therapy, they had to get better or Medicare wouldn’t pay for it. If their condition later got worse, Medicare would jump back in and pay for more treatment. It was the same for coverage of other types of skilled care: rehabilitation, nursing (care that can’t be given by a non-medical person), speech therapy and more. No improvement meant that it wouldn’t be paid for. But some seniors won’t get better. Their improvement reaches a plateau and stops. Or perhaps they have a chronic disability. They do, however, need care to maintain the levels they currently have. And with home health or outpatient care, they could continue to live at home.

If you would like help in determining which clothing is best for you, Sophia’s World boutique is available for free consultation on Saturdays from 12 to 6PM.

The agreement from the lawsuit, however, doesn’t require that Medicare tell us about the change. Apparently we’re supposed to find out by ourselves. But, from now on, claims filed, even if there hasn’t been any improvement in a senior’s condition, won’t be turned down automatically. At this point, it appears that some doctors and therapists don’t know about this change: If continued treatment is required, even past the standard dollar limit, they can put a code on the claim that states further treatment is medically necessary. According to the lawsuit, Medicare has until next January to notify employees who staff the 800MEDICARE information line, doctors and other health-care providers. If your providers say your coverage will come to an end, be sure to tell them about this important change.

Do research. If you haven’t “Googled” some subject, you haven’t lived. I am continually amazed at the amount of information available on the Internet. A friend recently asked, “How’d we ever do research before the Internet?” My answer: “I can’t remember.” Second, develop people skills. Learning skills will teach you what you need to know but people skills will teach you who you need to know. People skills give you friends to share with, co-workers to work with, and an ever-expanding network for mutual growth. How do you do that? Two ways: love people and make them feel important. Do you love people? The few who do are the most welcome guests at any gathering. Don’t you just love people who love people? Start loving everyone you see. Start by smiling at the people you pass on the street and as you pass them, speak to them silently in your inner spirit with words of love and acceptance. Then, make others feel important. This is counter-intuitive to our natural way. When we walk into any situation we want people to notice how important we are. Fight the urge to be noticed and start noticing others.

In October, Columbus sighted Cuba, which he thought was mainland China.

• On Aug. 1, 1943, a Japanese destroyer rams an American PT (patrol torpedo) boat, No. 109, slicing it in two. The destruction is so massive that other American PT boats in the area assume the crew is dead. Two crewmen were, in fact, killed, but 11 survived, including Lt. John F. Kennedy, who would later become president.

• On July 29, 1909, the newly formed General Motors Corporation acquires the country’s leading luxury automaker, the Cadillac Automobile Company, for $4.5 million. Cadillac was founded out of the ruins of automotive pioneer Henry Ford’s second failed company. His third effort, the Ford Motor Company, finally succeeded.

• On July 30, 1965, President Lyndon Johnson signs Medicare, a health insurance program for elderly Americans, into law. At the bill-signing ceremony, former President Harry Truman was enrolled as Medicare’s first beneficiary and received the first Medicare card.

• On Aug. 4, 1914, as World War I erupts in Europe, President Woodrow Wilson formally proclaims the neutrality of the United States. However, by June 1915, the first 14,000 U.S. infantry troops landed in France to begin training for combat.

• On July 31, 1975, Teamsters Union president Jimmy Hoffa is reported missing in Detroit. He was last seen alive in a parking lot outside the Machus Red Fox restaurant the previous afternoon. Authorities have never been able to confirm what really happened to Hoffa. He was declared legally dead in 1982.

ATTACK OF THE TELEVISION EXECUTIVES!

PART 1

By Nick Yanez

“If I was one of them — these people that you seem to think are your enemies — what would I do? Well, there would be no balloon, so I’d draw a map to a real secluded place like a cave or some underbrush, a good place for a trap... an ambush. And when your friends got there, a bunch of my people would be waiting for them. Then they’d use them to trade for me. I guess it’s a good thing I’m not one of them, huh? You guys got any milk?” -Henry Gale from LOST That ladies and gentlemen, is one riveting piece of television history. It’s an excerpt from the often misunderstood ABC television series LOST. It was my favorite television series; everyone has their own. Now, with programs like Hulu and Netflix, television series’ are more accessible than ever. People can binge-watch new hip shows like Mad Men, Arrested Development, Breaking Bad, and more, getting through entire season’s in just a week (or less).

If this is the case, and the major network executive’s are ready to pounce, then they’ve finally added one last vital piece for world domination - Television for dogs. Dog’s are the ones that protect us when our guard is down. They bark when an unwelcome guest comes walking up the driveway. They are alert hours before a storm hits. They’ll always be

ready to pounce, even in the middle of the night when we’re fast asleep. As the new, proud owner of a puppy, I’ve started to notice some strange things about the dog species. The one that stood out the most is his attentiveness to TV. The first night I had my puppy, he watched an entire basketball game with me. He was mesmerized. I thought this was strange, until I stumbled upon a Fox News article telling me that dogs are more inclined to watch television recently. This is mostly due to the fact that flat screens, particularly HD quality, can now engage a dog’s eye. The science goes like this: The human eye can detect something as low as 60 frames per second (which is what most older CRT screens processed at). Dog’s however need a minimum of 75FPS. It’s as if old TV’s didn’t even work for them. This whole time they thought we were staring at an empty box. What fools we must appear to be... Now, with higher resolution screens and frames flickering by in the blink of an eye, dog’s can fully see what’s going on inside the box. They’re essentially experiencing what many humans did back in the 30’s. One network isn’t wasting any time. DOGTV is an actual channel dedicated only to dogs. Programming is designed by pet experts to “meet specific attributes of a dog’s sense of vision and hearing and supports their natural behavior patterns”. Supposedly, the modern science involved should help stimulate their brains. I wonder if that’s what they told us originally? So there you have it. Now our dog’s will be glued to the television just as much as people. The network captains and their henchmen have finally found the ultimate weak spot in mankind; it’s the back-breaker, the explanation point. They’ve taken our humanity, and now, they’ve taken our canines. EASY SUMMER MEALS FOR KIDS

t is important to provide balanced, nutritious meals for your children throughout the summer. Unfortunately, summertime can pose challenges to the family food budget because children are eating more meals at home. “There are summer meal programs available for families that need assistance,” said Terry Egan, nutrition and health education specialist with University of Missouri Extension. Food banks or food pantries, local Boys and Girls Clubs, daycares and summer schools are just a few places that may offer meals for children. If all meals are provided at home, here are some tips to help keep costs down: • Choose a variety of healthy options so children don’t get bored with the same foods. Try sandwich wraps with meat and veggies inside, fresh and canned fruits for sweetness and nutrition, and low -fat milk to round out the meal.

• Drink lots of water. Water cools us off, hydrates the body and helps us feel full longer. • Use caution with low-nutrient foods like chips, snack cakes, cookies, soda and juice drinks. These foods can be very expensive, and they are not very filling or satisfying. • Let your children help plan meals and snacks so they can have some of their favorite foods. Planning ahead can really save money in your food budget. • Enjoy the foods of summer -- blueberries, strawberries, peaches, watermelons and fresh garden veggies are always a treat. • Try these garden-fresh recipes for dinner, and top them off with a fresh fruit frozen treat. Your family will love them!

You can swap out your child’s favorite veggies to make this fresh and easy wraps! To remove corn kernels from the cob, stand an ear of corn on one end and slice the kernels off with a sharp knife. One ear will yield about 1/2 cup kernels. Look for soft sun-dried tomatoes (not oil-packed) in the produce section of most supermarkets. If you can only find dry (and hard) sun-dried tomatoes, soak them in boiling water for about 20 minutes before using.

New DVD Releases for Week of July 29, 2013 PICKS OF THE WEEK “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” (PG-13) -- The evil Cobra Commandos have a big evil plan, and only the action-figure-inspired personnel of the G.I. Joe unit can stop them, again! This time, the Cobras have one of their operatives in the White House, so the Joes have a tiny nugget of plot to talk about between explosive action sequences. This time, Bruce Willis joins the crew to add his muscle mass to bulk already provided by

Roadblock (Dwayne Johnson) and Duke (Channing Tatum). Do not, under any circumstances, attempt to take this movie seriously -- even for a moment. This is a sequel to a movie based on a cartoon show that was produced to sell toys. It’s like a big bowl of sugary cereal -- kids will love it and go nuts for hours after finishing; we grownups have a narrow chance of enjoying it, and we’ll probably just get a headache. “Filly Brown” (R) -- “Majo” Tonoro (Gina Rodriguez) has a gift for hip hop. She also has a manipulative mother trying to reach out from prison (Jenni Rivera), an impressionable younger sister, a worn-out father (Lou Diamond-Phillips) and bills to pay. While Majo’s lyrics are personal and political, some local record producers notice that she could be a real moneymaker if she sold out and sexed-up her act. With all that talent and all that responsibility, Majo’s

path is a difficult one. The story, as you may have figured by now, feels put together from a formula set for a new genre -- the underdog hip-hop artist. Instead of doing any plotlines that are too original, the film chooses to use as many cliched subplots as possible. The performances by Rodriguez and Phillips manage to shine despite the script. “Cloudburst” (NR) -- Stella (Olympia Dukakis) and Dot (Brenda Frick) are an elderly couple living in a little cottage in Maine. Dot has lost her sight, and her clueless but well-intentioned granddaughter commits her to a nursing home. Stella breaks her out, and the two head to Nova Scotia to be legally married. Along the way, they pick up a young hitchhiker who wants to see his dying mother. This is not your average road-trip romp. With touching performances, a good script and the right visuals, this bit of drama is certainly

16

worth checking out. “Black Rock” (R) -- Three women who have been friends since childhood take a trip to a tiny wooded island in Maine -- but instead of bonding, they wind up bound to a tree. Shortly after arriving, the women meet three hunters who decide to take advantage of the isolation and attack the protagonists. What follows is a tense thriller where the relationship between hunter and prey shifts back and forth.

THE LAW ACCORDING TO STEVENS by Lisa Welch Stevens, Attorney at Law P.C.

What the enclosed documents do not tell you is that, first of all, you are not required to file or send to any person, any entity, or any governmental agency copies of your annual minutes, much less pay anyone $125.00 to provide such a “service” to you. Nor do you need to pay anyone, including an attorney, to prepare or maintain minutes for you. You can do all this yourself. All you need to do is, at least once a year (I recommend in January or February, after your fiscal year end), write up a list of major decisions or actions you have made or taken during the past year. For example, salaries paid to you or other owners, officers and directors; leases signed; bonuses made, etc. MAJOR decisions. Then add a blanket statement: “all actions taken by the officers and directors of the corporation during the past year are hereby acknowledged, authorized, and approved.” Have each owner (shareholder) and officer or director (usually the same persons) sign and date it. Put it in your file cabinet. There, you’re done. That’s all you need to do.

kept annual minutes. The only other scenarios in which corporate minutes are likely to become an issue are if you are selling your business, trying to get a business loan, or are audited by the IRS or the Colorado Department of Revenue. And here I will let you in on a little secret: you can do “clean-up” minutes if you need to, to fix things. Of course, this cannot be done after the fact (such as after a judgment has entered against you), or if too much time has gone by, but if you realize that – “oops! I haven’t done annual minutes for the last 2 years” – it can be rectified. In fact, in Colorado, most corporate formality problems can be easily fixed, and it will then be just as if there had never been a problem at all. The annual minute requirement is primarily to ensure that you are treating your business like the separate legal person it is. If you don’t, then neither

the courts, the government, or anyone else is required to do so either, and can treat it simply as your personal alter ego. The only penalty for not maintaining corporate minutes is loss of limited liability (which can of course be a big deal in certain circumstances). The State of Colorado is not going to assess any penalties against you for not keeping minutes. The song made the charts of Billboard Hot 100, Adult Contemporary and Country. 4. Jimmie Rodgers (his version hit three charts) and Ricky Nelson, on his debut album. 5. “Barracuda,” by Heart in 1977. • Keep your tires properly inflated. Check them once a month; otherwise, you’re wasting gasoline or risking a blowout. Improper inflation also wears out tires faster, and buying new ones is expensive. • Rotate and realign your tires regularly. If your tires are wearing unevenly, your car may be out of alignment or your shocks or struts worn out. This can drastically reduce the life of your tires.

SAVING MONEY ON CAR MAINTENANCE

I

t would be nice if we could just get in the car and go, but the truth is that cars need maintaining, and the more diligent you are about tackling car maintenance up front, the less it will cost you down the road. Here a few suggestions that will curb your maintenance costs over the long haul: • Oil changes -- The 3,000-mile oil change is history for newer cars. You’ll save money by changing it every 7,500 to 10,000 miles (check your owner’s manual). Use an independent garage, since dealers tend to be expensive. If you’re not sure you’re going to a reputable one, mark your old oil filter and check to be sure it has been changed.

• Follow the factory maintenance schedule. Your dealer may want you to have a major tune-up every 30,000 miles, but you can stick to the manufacturer’s schedule unless your car is not running well. As with oil changes, independent shops can do this work much cheaper. Dealers may tell you using outside garages violates the car’s warranty, but this is not true. • Change your antifreeze every two years. Also check for drips under the car and dried/cracked belts and hoses. • Have your brakes checked once a year. It’s much cheaper to adjust than replace them. • Use the right gas. Your owner’s manual might say you should buy premium, but that isn’t necessarily true. Go for the cheapest gasoline that doesn’t make your car engine knock; all octane does is prevent knock. A higher-grade gasoline isn’t necessarily better for your car, just more expensive.

• Change the fuel filter every two years, or according to the manufacDavid Uffington regrets that he canturer’s schedule.
