“When you’ve told someone that you’ve left them a legacy, the only decent thing to do is to die at once.” – Samuel Butler, British poet

e all have an idea of what we want our legacy to be. Perhaps it’s kind acts you’ve done that will keep your memory alive. Or maybe you’d like to be able to leave your children and grandchildren with enough worldly goods to ensure they live comfortably for a very long time. There’s no sure-fire way to guarantee that your legacy will turn out as you’ve hoped. Ideally, we would all be able to bequeath our families with plenty of money to take away their financial worries AND be remembered for the plethora of good deeds we performed that made the world a better place.

of his descendants who can say they share Hitler’s blood are said to have changed their last name to Stuart-Houston, live in Long Island, New York and supposedly have been told by the American government that they are not, under any circumstances, ever to have children. The rest are said to live in Austria and potentially don’t even know they are Hitler’s descendants. It’s probably not the type of information a family likes to share around the dinner table…

What Will Your Legacy Be?... Continued from Page 1 The likelihood of that happening is slim to none. But that doesn’t mean we can’t try, right? Plenty of people have made a positive mark on the world before they bowed out. Others, well, maybe their mark wasn’t exactly positive. It could’ve been the complete opposite. But you can always count on Snippetz to round up some good stories about people who left a legacy.

As you might remember from our “Obsession with Royalty” article we published on April 8 of this year, we took a look at King Henry VIII of England. King Henry VIII had a pretty tough time conceiving a male heir with his first wife, Catherine of Aragon. He did manage to sire a daughter, Mary. Mary ascended to the throne after King Edward VI died and abruptly turned the country on its head by violently thrusting it back to Catholicism.

Most people probably know how to use “legacy” in a sentence but it’s a bit harder to define it in precise terms. The MerriamWebster dictionary defines it as a gift by will especially of money or other personal property, or something transmitted or received from an ancestor or predecessor or from the past. So let’s take a look at some famous people who left a legacy that left a mark on the world.

Mary’s father separated from the Catholic Church when he demanded an annulment from Catherine of Aragon so he could pursue Anne Boleyn. At that time, the country became a Protestant nation, which apparently didn’t suit Queen Mary I. She executed Protestants left and right, simply for going against her Catholic beliefs. This behavior earned her the nickname “Bloody Mary,” which frightened hundreds more Protestants who fled the country, not to return until the queen had died.

ADOLF HITLER (Ok, this is probably not who you expected to see in this article, but bear with us.)

Clearly, Hitler’s legacy is NOT a good one. His role in the mass murder of millions of people during World War II still haunts the history books and is an extremely disturbing example of how warped one person’s views of the rest of mankind truly can be. So what is his legacy? Besides demonstrating how not to treat your fellow human beings, he also has living descendants. His legacy is the DNA he donated to each of them.

ERNEST HEMINGWAY Arguably one of the most influential writers of the 20th century, Hemingway wrote such novels as “The Sun Also Rises,” “The Old Man and the Sea,” and “For Whom the Bell Tolls.” You’d be pretty hard-pressed to find someone who either hasn’t heard of or read at least one of his novels or short stories. Hemingway served on the Italian Front during World War I and his experiences had a profound influence on his style and the themes about which he chose to write. Those same themes (said to be love, war, wilderness and loss) have carried down to modern-day high school English classrooms where teachers often use his work as a point of study. Hemingway left his family plenty of money (supposedly to the tune of $7.5 million), which can be classified as a legacy but he also left the world his books, which are

Again, Queen Mary I’s legacy isn’t exactly a great one, but her memory lives on not only as the former Queen of England, but also as “Bloody Mary,” the ghost who will supposedly appear in the mirror of a darkened room if you say her name and spin around three times.

His writing style, which he called “the iceberg theory: the facts float above the water; the supporting structure and symbolism operate out of sight” is used in both positive and negative ways to either support or criticize such a style.

MOTHER TERESA Officially named “The Blessed Teresa of Calcutta,” Mother Teresa is another household name, which proves her legacy, in part. She left home at 18 to join a missionary and took her vows as a nun in 1931 at nearly 21 years old, although it’s said that she had made up her mind to commit herself to a life of religion by 12 years old. After a number of years teaching, Mother Teresa said she got “the call within the call” and decided to leave the convent where she lived so she could serve the poor people of Calcutta by living among them. Mother Teresa was given permission to start the Missionaries of Charity in 1950 with just 13 members but by 1997, more than 4,000 sisters were members. The Missionaries of Charity ran orphanages, AIDS hospices, cared for the disabled, the poor, flood victims, and those affected by epidemics and famine, among other charitable services. Mother Teresa received awards and praise for her work, including the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. She has her own day on Oct. 19 in Albania. Mother Teresa Women’s University is located in Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu, India. The Memorial House of

Mother Teresa opened its doors in 2009 in Skopje (her hometown) located in the Republic of Macedonia. It’s clear that Mother Teresa’s legacy extends beyond the good she did but to the good deeds she inspired in others. She is so highly-regarded that, even though she has long since passed, having died in 1997, the Holy See has begun the process of beatification, which is the third step toward possibly being declared a saint.

Researchers of a new study wanted to know whether it mattered how often we exercised, or it if was even important to get that exercise every day. What they learned might be a game changer for many of us who don’t want to make exercise a daily event or even work out for long blocks of time: It doesn’t matter whether we do it all at once, or in small blocks of 10 minutes, or somewhere in between, as long as we get in our 150 minutes each week.

That’s not to say we should forget about muscle building. Cardio for the heart is one thing, but muscles keep us upright, strong and balanced. We can get our cardio in pushing a lawn mower or riding a bike, anything that accelerates the heart rate, according to the information for older adults on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website. For muscle-strengthening activities for the major muscle groups on two or more days a week, the CDC recommends lifting weights, working with resistance bands, heavy gardening and yoga -- whatever works the back, chest, shoulders, arms, legs and hips. This should make it much easier to stay in shape! Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Select clothing that accentuates you. I believe that marketing, particularly in the fashion industry, has created an image that no normal person can achieve. It has made at least one woman want to hide behind her clothing. It is probably true that every woman would like to hide something. Yes, EVERY woman‌..even models. However, hiding behind clothing does nothing to make you beautiful. Coco Chanel, a fashion icon who revolutionized haute couture, stated “I invented my life by taking for granted that everything I did not like, would have an opposite, which I would like.â€? It’s time to ďŹ nd what you do like and what accentuates you. While sizing and color choices are dependent on the individual, there are some universal truths. 1.

WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO RIGHT?

DON’T FIXATE ON FEARFOCUS ON FAITH

T

By Dr. Ron Ross

here are four kinds of fear: real danger, healthy fear, irrational fear, and everyday worries.

Real dangers are the things you need to fear because they really do portend danger. The real fear of getting hit by a car causes you to look both ways before crossing a busy intersection. It is the fear falling or of heights that keeps you from jumping off a roof. These kinds of fears keep you alive. Healthy fears can motivate you to take positive action. Fear of lung cancer can cause you to stop smoking. You may become more attentive to your spouse if you fear the ravages and shame of divorce. Irrational fears are the fears you create for yourself by imagining horrible outcomes to situations that may not even exist. The most common fears in this category the fear of rejection (“If they don’t like me I’ll just die!”), and fear of failure, (“I’ll look so stupid if I can’t do it?”). These irrational fears steal away your life one fear and one missed opportunity at a time. Everyday worry is the third category of fear and it is the most common. I’m talking about all the things that are on your mind that must be done today, or must be paid by Friday, or might happen if…, or what will happen when…, or how will I ever…, etc. Everyday worries paralyze you physically, anesthetize you emotionally, demoralize you spiritually, neutralize you socially, and fragmentize you intellectually. Everyday worries spend your time, sap your energy, and steal your joy. Fear and worry focuses on fantasies and frailties but faith and courage focuses on realities and strengths. Fear endorses doubts but courage fortifies convictions. Fear amplifies anxieties but faith highlights hope.

719-592-1365 www.csallergy.com

Including Allergy Injections Fear underscores disabilities but courage promotes possibilities.

At the Medical Center next to Safeway

And guess who decides how you are going to react in any situation? You do, that’s who. So my kick in the pants is this: focus on your faith not your fears. The only power that fear and worry have in your life is the power that you give it. And what do you get from fear and worry? The only thing you get from fear and worry is obscurity and gloom.

PALMER LAKE WELLNESS CENTER

Fear says, “Don’t do anything, don’t try anything, don’t learn anything, don’t hope for anything, don’t talk to anyone, don’t help anyone, don’t look at anyone, don’t be or do anything. Remain obscure so my frailties and failures will be noticed only by few.”

TRI-LAKES PREMIER ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE CENTER

Do you know what I fear most? It’s neither death nor public speaking (allegedly the two most common fears). I fear most a mediocre, miserly, and ultimately meaningless life. I believe that mediocrity, stinginess, and emptiness come from a multiplicity of irrational fears and a deficiency of authentic faith.

OFFERING THE FINEST QUALITY AND LOWEST PRICES! We have re-designed the Palmer Lake Wellness Center to provide our clients with our very best!

On the other hand, a life lived with faith and courage has meaning, purpose, and leaves a heritage for generations to come. So what are you afraid of? Spiders, heights, meeting new people, change? Whatever your fears are, you can face them head on. Start with the simple act of defining your fears. Describe in detail what they are and how they impact you. Then, change the subject to faith. Describe in detail what the same issue would look like through the eyes of faith. You’ll be impressed at how quickly you can move from fear to faith.

ELECTRIC CO-OPS WERE CONSTRUCTED WITH LINES, POLES AND THE FOOLHARDY NOTION THAT WE ALL PROSPER BY HELPING EACH OTHER. LIVING GOD’S GIFTS bringing Christ into your financial life

by Chuck Maher, CFP®

...BRING CHRIST INTO OUR FINANCIAL LIVES

INVESTINGEXPECTING MORE

M

ost financial professionals would agree that a sound investment portfolio provides some degree of safety of principal, it offsets the loss of purchasing power caused by inflation, it provides for a real rate of return after taxes and over time it increases in value. When done well an investment portfolio becomes a vehicle for accumulating, storing and protecting wealth. Stocks, bonds, certificates of deposit, mutual funds and all the rest are simply the tools that we use to build a well-balanced investment portfolio. The determination of which tools we use, and how we use them, is based in large part by the investor’s goals and needs, attitude toward risk and time line: for most that is where it ends. We as Christians, however, are called to do more, and from our investments, to expect more. Our investment decisions should be a reflection of our faith and values. It does matter how we choose to invest our money. From a Christian prospective, investing is not just about making money. It is also about doing what is right. Companies that support abortion, profit from pornography or compromise family values do not belong in a portfolio centered on faith. I recently reviewed the holdings of one of the largest mutual fund companies in America today both in size of assets under management and number of inves-

tors, what I found did not surprise me. Unfortunately it is a disturbing view of who we have become as a society. Over 13% of the companies the fund invested in were involved with the manufacture of abortion causing and abortion related products, paid for abortions as part of their employee benefit plan, or as an insurer; or financially supported organizations like Planned Parenthood. Just under 15% of the companies had earnings from the production or distribution of pornographic materials and other anti-family entertainment. Well over 40% financially supported or provided employee benefits that compromised traditional family values. Sadly, this was not a unique situation limited to the holdings of one fund company. It was a consistency I found with each and every large mutual fund company I reviewed. Only the percentages changed. Which begs the question: Is this how we should be investing God’s treasure? Financially supporting and profiting from businesses whose earnings conflict so greatly with many of the core values of our faith? I believe not.

“No servant can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other or be attentive to one and despise the other. You can not give yourself to God and money.” Luke 16:13

PART 1

Nick-Snips

a minor, after all) was taken by what is described to be a tall, man in his 30’s.

GATOR-AIDING (AND ABETTING)

Employee Anthony Williams explains, “One guy got my mom’s attention, while the other guy took the Gator”. TWO VILLIANS!? That’s not even the real shocker here. The man who took the young reptile snuck him out by putting the baby Gator under his shirt! Talk about a risky proposition. The $300, two-foot Alligator can be very dangerous. In fact, Williams doubts the robber got away without any scars. “Baby Alligators have sharper teeth than the bigger kind” he tells, “He probably was bit”.

By Nick Yanez

O

ver the last 8 months, Nick Snips has tackled bizarre facts, new technologies, ridiculous lawsuits, and pointless facts. Hopefully you’ve earned yourself a solid conversation piece or two this year. But surely there must be a high demand for the most obvious Snips snub – dumb criminals. Each year, thousands upon thousands of cynical people read the Darwin Awards; an annual list and description of people who, um, eliminated themselves in bizarre and less-than-intelligent ways. People have a sick tendency to get joy out of other’s failures. Why is this? I admit it myself, if someone takes a big spill at the X-Games, I’m the first one hitting the replay on Tivo. Of course I never want to see anyone get severely injured. I just want to see a good enough wipe out to see them down for a couple minutes. They give us an epic crash. They lay down for a couple of minutes. Everyone starts to worry. Then they get up and slowly walk away, giving the crowd a thumbs up and a great story to tell. This is perhaps the pinnacle of live entertainment. We love to watch someone take a risk, knowing the outcome could be life threatening. This is one of the many reasons that this week’s story is so charming. Rarely do I find myself rooting for the bad guy. I must admit, though, this guy has skills, guts, and now… glory. Our villain comes from the delightful state of West Virginia. The crime? One of the most bizarre heists ever attempted; the kidnapping of a baby Alligator. A local pet store called Pets and Things was robbed of one of its most unique instore creatures last Tuesday. A young alligator who shall remain unnamed (he is

Ouch. Unfortunately for the robber, he’s about to get bit by the big mouth of the law. Store owners viewed their surveillance cameras to find the robbery clear as day. They immediately recognized the robber as a regular customer who already owns another Alligator. Williams says they gave the name to police and an investigation is underway. Does anybody else think the guy should be able to keep the Gator just for the sheer willpower he showed? Probably not. But at least an online video has leaked to prove how tough this guy is. If for nothing else, it’s a moral victory for the robber. What I find strange is that there has been no mention of the man’s coconspirator. Perhaps he’s the true mastermind of this operation. Perhaps he is building an army of reptiles, determined to one day take over the world. He owns the cops already, so they’re not coming for him. In fact, the thief who has been identified is just a regular henchmen. Sure he’s tough, but does he have the brains (I’m thinking no, because of the whole Alligator under the shirt thing). In fact, this story is far from over. This is likely just the prequel in a long series of unfortunate feisty-animal kidnappings. Hang on to your raccoons people, they’re coming…

LEO (July 23 to August 22) Change is a major factor for the Big Cat through midmonth. Be prepared to deal with it on a number of levels, including travel plans and workplace situations.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A longtime situation starts to move into a new phase. The question for the uncertain Lamb right now is whether to move with it. Facts emerge by midmonth to help you decide.

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You might not like all the changes that have begun to take place around you. But try to find something positive in at least some of them that you can put to good use.

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A talent for organizing your priorities allows the Divine Bovine to enjoy a busy social life and not miss a beat in meeting all workplace and/or family commitments.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A family member’s unsettling experience could create more problems if it’s not handled with care and love. And who’s the best one to offer all that? You, of course.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) What began as a dubious undertaking has now become one of your favorite projects. Your enthusiasm for it rallies support from other doubters-turned-believers. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Accept the help of friends to get you through an unexpectedly difficult situation. There’ll be time enough later to investi-

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) It might not be the right time for you to start a new venture. But it’s a good time to start gathering facts and figures so you’ll be set when the GO! sign lights up. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) The sagacious Sagittarius should have no trouble

In Indonesia, Hula Hoops were banned because they “might stimulate passion.” China’s official news agency called it “a nauseating craze,” and the Soviets declared the toy to be “a symbol of the emptiness of American culture” (despite the fact that the Hula Hoop originated in Australia). • Adult tuna have been known to swim up to 100 miles in a single day. *** Thought for the Day: “I don’t know anything about music. It looks as if that one person you once thought you could never hope to win over to your side suddenly just might choose to join you. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) You might have to set aside your pride for now and accept a change that isn’t to your advantage. Cheer up. There’ll be time later to turn this around in your favor. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your creative self emerges as dominant through midmonth.
