“It was the darndest thing I’ve ever seen. It was big. It was very bright. It changed colors and was about the size of the moon. We watched it for 10 minutes but none of us could figure out what it was. One thing’s for sure, I’ll never make fun of people who say they’ve seen unidentified objects in the sky.” – President Jimmy Carter

H

ave you ever looked up into the night sky to ponder the meaning of life, only to have your revelry interrupted by a flash of light that streaked across the sky? Or maybe you were driving with your family and saw something hovering over a huge cornfield in Kansas that looked like nothing you’d ever seen before. If you haven’t had a firsthand experience of this kind, you’ve probably heard stories about people who say they have. It’s hard to deny that our country has a particular fascination with the idea of visitors from outer space.

Along with the engraving, Glasser included a description of what he saw. He said he and many other men and women witnessed the objects fly back and forth, seeming to fight amongst themselves for over an hour. Once they had apparently run out of steam, Glasser claims they all fell from the sky, crashed to the ground and burned to ashes.

and just so happened to be a professional illustrator as well. He depicted the sighting through an engraving which showed the objects ranging from huge globe-like shapes to massive cigar-shaped ones. They appeared to be battling each other. Part of the engraving showed two of the U.F.O.s (since they really are unidentifiable) having smashed into the ground with smoke spiraling up from the wreckage.

Alien Sightings... Continued from Page 1

The acronym “U.F.O.” stands for “unidentified flying object.” That’s not very specific but the bottom line is that whatever object people are reporting to have seen is unidentifiable and usually is attributed to some sort of alien life form. And these sightings occur pretty frequently. The National U.F.O. Reporting Center is located in a former underground nuclear bunker in Harrington, Wash. According to its records, an estimated 5,000 new U.F.O. sightings are reported each year and their records contain as many as 70,000 total reported sightings from as far back as the 1950s.

MASSACHUSETTS 1639 Colonial governor John Winthrop made an entry in his journal that described the account of James Everall. Winthrop wrote that Everall saw a great light in the night over the Muddy River, more formally known as the Charles River. Winthrop made sure to state that Everall was a sober, discreet man so as not to confuse his sighting with that of any drunken hallucinations reported around that time.

While the Reporting Center may have records from over 50 years ago, that doesn’t mean sightings hadn’t occurred until then. In fact, there are some well-recorded accounts that go back as far as the 1560s.

According to Winthrop, Everall said the

DELAWARE 1860 On Friday, July 13, 1860 (yes, we know . . . Friday the 13th, how cliché) Wilmington, Del. in nearly its entirety was awash with a pale blue light. Supposedly, people began noticing a massive object, estimated at about 200 feet long flying about 100 feet above the ground. An account printed in the Wilmington Tribune even stated that the object sparkled in the manner of a rocket. Even stranger still, the object seemed to have brought along reinforcements because people claimed a pitch-black cloud could be seen flying in front of it. And they

“great light” was about nine feet long and flew up and down the length of the river for up to three hours. The object supposedly contracted and took on the shape of a pig, a rather unusual shape for a U.F.O. but who are we to judge, really? Anyway, Winthrop goes on to say that a variety of other credible witnesses also saw the same light in about the same place. Naturally, no one could explain it and although the sighting was attributed to “some operation of the devil” by James Savage, who edited the journal in 1835, others firmly believe it was a genuine U.F.O sighting.

Once the object turned south over the Delaware River, a fourth ball apparently joined the parade and the caravan flew around for a while before heading east and disappearing from sight.

WASHINGTON STATE 1947 Pilot and businessman Kenneth Arnold was flying his small two-seater plane near Mt. Rainier on June 24, 1947 when he supposedly saw nine U.F.O.s flying nearby. He said the objects looked like pie plates, sort of saucer-like and that they moved erratically. When he gave his report to a newspaper reporter, the writer changed Arnold’s description to that of a “flying saucer” and thus, the first flying saucer sighting was recorded into the pages of history. Arnold claimed to have had the objects in his sight for up to three minutes. In 1977, Arnold attended an international conference on U.F.O.s in Chicago and added more descriptive language to his previous statement about his sighting. He said the objects were moving at a speed of around 1,700 miles per hour and that they were shiny and appeared to be pulsating. He added that the objects “seemed to be alive in the center, to have the ability to change their density.” And the icing on this otherworldly cake of

Compliments of the Reporting Center we mentioned above, we have a record of a sighting reported on Feb. 20, 2008. The report indicates that a former U.S. Army helicopter pilot was spending a peaceful evening on his front porch watching the lunar eclipse. The 47-year-old claimed that out of nowhere, a bright round object appeared. He stated that the object, which he said flew in a straight line in what looked like a straight line toward Earth, was very obviously not “a naturally formed object.” He claimed the light then crossed directly in front of the moon which, by that time had been fully eclipsed. He then said the light shot off to the right of the moon and disappeared. In his report, the event only lasted about five seconds.

The former pilot made sure to clarify that he had 20/12 and 20/15 vision in his eyes, was not a “U.F.O. nut” and that based on his experience, the object was making intelligent turns, almost as if it were purposefully flying around the moon. He added that it was moving extremely fast.

after forty-four years, Monument Hill Country Club is now allowing the public to play our golf course!

As you can imagine, it’s difficult to verify these claims of U.F.O sightings but supposedly one study was done that indicated at least one-third of the Earth’s population believes in the existence of aliens and their U.F.O.s. It definitely makes you wonder . . are we alone?

Now two U.S. senators have put forth legislation designed to help. Susan Collins of Maine and Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota have introduced The Seniors Fraud Protection Act. While there are too many scams targeting the elderly, the Jamaica lottery scam is particularly nasty. If the scammers don’t get immediate cooperation from the victim, they employ high-tech threat tools such as Internet satellite streetview pictures of the victim’s home. Even if the victim does pay (the worst possible thing to do), they come after more money, threatening to burn down the house. They can look up the victim in online databases and learn the name of relatives. Your best bet to fight these scammers is to protect yourself: • Use your caller ID and don’t answer calls from the 876 area code. • If the “prizeâ€? sounds too good to be true, it is. • Never wire funds to anyone you don’t know. • If someone wants you to pay fees or “taxesâ€? in advance to collect a prize, don’t. • Allow yourself to BE RUDE. t is a reality that we are judged by appearance. This does not usurp the valued human qualities of integrity, work-ethic, kindness and compassion. What is inside is far more treasured than what is outside. How you present yourself to the world around you should be a reflection of who you actually are. It is a reality that in our initial meeting with someone that the only thing we have to go off of in the first five minutes, or less, is how that person presents themselves. It can either show who you are at your best, or can be a detractor. Oscar Wilde stated “It is only shallow people who do not judge by appearances. The true mystery of the world is in the visible, not the invisible.” Of course, this is debatable. Since this is a style column, we’ll leave that debate out and stick to style. The point is that we are judged by appearance. As an example, when I lived in Oklahoma City, I took my cat to a vet for surgery. Of course the Veterinarian was an expert in the care of animals. She had her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine (DVM)! By the way, getting a DVM is one of the most challenging studies out there. Her appearance did not convey her accomplishments. It was, in fact, quite scary. She reeked of cigarette smoke, had a baggy and frayed smock and her unkempt hair was….well….. just imagine that some small animals could become lost in that mess. Whether right or wrong, I did not feel my cat would be in good hands with someone who took no effort in conveying a professional appearance. I took my kitten elsewhere. Perhaps she was the best and I went to a less

Getting back to appearance and style. One of the chief complaints that I hear is that clothing is designed only for seventeen year-old svelte Scandinavians. Kind of makes the rest of us being the 99.9999% of the world want to throw in towel! Or maybe just wear that towel since it does kind of fit. The fashion industry is a multi-million dollar of year industry and it is successful because it actually caters to millions of women. The far less than 1% could never fashion an industry. That pun was intended! It is true that sample sizes we see in magazines and on runways are geared for a certain height and weight. The further you get away from the sample size the less offerings are out there. This can be a good thing! It can make you try on more clothes to see what is truly fantastic. Otherwise, you would be complacent in just grabbing anything off the rack.

TO SPIRITUAL WHOLENESS

It is not difficult to look great. For those of us that are not blessed with being a sample size, it simply takes a bit more attention. You owe it to yourself to look your best. Appearances actually do matter and we are judged by the way we present ourselves. The example of the unkempt Vet is draconian. But the reality is that we are judged by how we appear and our appearance is often a reflection of how we think of ourselves. In the upcoming columns, we will discuss how to find clothing that is flattering to the variance of figures that represent the real people we are and to show our best. If you would like help in determining which clothing is best for you, Sophia’s World boutique is available for free consultation on Saturdays from 12 to 6PM.

THE TOP TEN EXCUSES FOR NOT TALKING TO YOUR MATE - Part 1

A

By Dr. Ron Ross

sk any group of people “What three qualities make for a great relationship?” and “communication” will usually be listed first. Reverse the question and ask, “What three qualities do you believe are most destructive to a loving relationship?” and you’ll get listed as #1: the lack of communication. If communication is the most important aspect of a meaningful relationship, why do so many couples make every effort to avoid talking with each other? Here is what I consider to be the top ten excuses both men and women utilize to avoid meaningful personal inter-action. The list is not in any particular order except excuse # 1, which shall be revealed in next week’s column. Here are six of the ten most common excuses for NOT talking to your mate. Excuse # 10: The Smarthone. How often have you seen a lovely couple sitting in a restaurant not talking, but gazing at their Smartphone. What happens? Then all of a sudden it rings. “I’m sorry honey, I really need to take this call.” The other person doesn’t really care because they are checking their email on their phone. Whatever meaningful conversation they hoped to have died a quiet death. Excuse # 9: The job. “I’m sorry, but I have to work late again tonight. I’ve must get these contracts in the mail.” For many couples, the dirty little secret is that one partner is happier at the office than at home so he or she seeks out projects that keep them at work. The person at home can complain, but they can’t say, “You don’t have to get that project finished tonight.” The job becomes an easy, irrefutable, conflict-avoidance alibi. Excuse # 8: Exercise. Health is important and a good-enough excuse to ignore the difficult issues that often crop up between people who love each other. “I’ve got to get in my 5k run again tonight or I’ll loose my edge” may really mean, “I prefer the quiet solitude of jogging over the noisy

719-592-1365 www.csallergy.com

Including Allergy Injections

company of my mate.” When the runner comes home he/she has two more excuses for not talking, “I’m out of breath and besides that, I need a shower.” Excuse #7: Television. No other invention of man has done as much to inhibit human conversation as the television. The late Ann Landers opined, “Television has proved that people will look at anything rather than each other.” The vital matters a family may need to face can be quickly set-aside in favor of the re-runs of a favorite TV show. Dad’s favorite sports team or mom’s favorite mystery are an easy replacement for the challenge of consequential communication. Excuse # 6: Computer. If someone is busily working at a computer it means they are doing something important, right? Interrupt them and you’ll find out just how welcome your invitation to conversation is. “Stop interrupting!” they will snap, “I have 127 unopened e-mails!” If you peek over their shoulder you’ll find they are probably reading one of 47 old jokes forwarded to them by their college-roommate. Excuse #5: Do-Good. Another absolutely legitimate excuse to be incommunicado is to volunteer for something more important than everyone in your family; something like world peace, or global warming, or assistant coach for the kid’s soccer team. I was able to escape from my family on Saturday mornings for an entire year because I had to attend the Men’s Prayer Breakfast at Village Inn. My wife couldn’t argue with me because it was about prayer and what could be more important than talking to God? Well, maybe, talking to your family! But it’s much easier to talk to God than to the wife and kids. Besides that, God doesn’t talk back and he doesn’t ask me any of those thorny questions. Next week, the “Final Four” of: The Top Ten Excuses for NOT Talking to Your Mate. ©2013 Dr. Ronald D. Ross Read more by Dr. Ross at www.RonRossToday.com Contact Dr. Ross at Dr.Ross@RonRossToday.com

...BRING CHRIST INTO OUR FINANCIAL LIVES

AN AUGUST CHECKUP

A

ugust is a great month for a financial checkup. By now you should have a pretty good feel of how the year is playing out. Here are a few items that you may want to consider to make sure you’re financially on track.

Where’s The Debt

Unfortunately, for too many of us, debt is one of our biggest expenses. Too often we push our debt obligations aside, paying the minimum balance and hoping it will go away. For too many it not only is not going away, it is increasing. Where does your debt stand? Do you have a plan for paying it down? A good goal is to have all of your debt, excluding your mortgage, paid off within the next five years. Talk show host, Dave Ramsey, promotes the snowball effect, where one makes the minimum payment on all obligations and applies any extra money to the loan with the lowest balance. When that loan is paid off those payments are compounded with the minimum payment to the next largest debt creating a snowball effect. Whatever plan you use to get rid of debt stick to it; debt is cheating you out of so much life.

Is Spending On Track

Hopefully at the beginning of the year you created a spending plan. A plan that recognizes the income you will be bringing in and the decisions you have made on how to spend it. If you are like many your intentions were set aside as life got in the way. Now’s a good time to brush off that plan

and see how things are going. Are you on track? Has your income changed? Have expenses stayed in line? Were there any large unplanned expenses? Make the time to review your plan, make the necessary changes and get on track. A well thought out spending plan puts you in control of your money.

Understanding Senior Care Options

Have you ever wondered what Medicare covers versus what you pay privately? Understanding the available payment options and obligations for Elder Care Services is critical.

FINDING SENIOR LIVING Assisted Living Independent Living Adult Family Homes

I’m finding that many families are saving faithfully. However too many are just hoarding cash as opposed to saving and investing with purpose. Given the turmoil that we have seen in the marketplace, that is understandable. Unfortunately stockpiling cash because of fear of risk is short term thinking and can limit your longterm success. A better approach is to save for those short-term needs and emergencies and select long-term investments that support your goals. We live in the greatest country in the greatest time in history. For the wise investor the opportunities are limitless. Sadly, no investment, including cash, comes without risk. By balancing your attitude towards risk with your longterm objectives it becomes easier to select investments that support what it is you want out of life.

Long-Term Care Insurance is a valuable tool to protect your family’s assets. If your loved one has purchased a policy, the next step is to understand and strategize how to best utilize the policy.

The Veterans Aid & Attendance Pension provides wartime veterans and their surviving spouses with tax-free financial aid for senior care needs.

If you don’t and you don’t know where to start, I would encourage you to meet with a financial planner who can help you put together a plan based upon what it is you want out of life.

The Financial Plan

A sound financial plan is critical to one’s financial success. Of course you would expect me to say that, I am, after all, a financial planner. A good financial plan takes into account your current financial situation (balance sheet and spending plan), recognizes the everyday risks that you face (insurance planning), defines the investments that will need to be made to achieve your goals (portfolio management), the tax consequences of those decisions (tax planning) and includes a plan for distribution of those assets (estate planning). If you

A Visit With Your Advisors

Whether you’re working with a financial planner, and I hope you are, a banker, insurance agent, stockbroker or whoever, make the time to visit with them. Have them explain to you what you own, how it is meeting your needs and what changes, if any, need

8

to be made. Make sure that they understand your goals and objectives and what success looks like for you. As you work your way through your August checkup, seek their advice. After all, you’re paying for it – use their knowledge and experience. “Financial success is achievable even in these volatile times if we will make the time to appreciate what it is we already have and recognize what it is we truly want out of life.” I penned those words in the early 2000’s as the tech bubble exploded and the markets collapsed. I believe them now today more than ever. For those who plan and are

diligent, success is all but assured. Make the time for an August checkup. “Remember, where your treasure is, there your heart is also.” Matthew 6:21 Chuck Maher is a Certified Financial PlannerTM practitioner specializing in Christian values based financial planning and investing. MOMENTS IN TIME THE HISTORY CHANNEL

• On Aug. 22, 1776, the British arrive at Long Island -- between Gravesend and New Utrecht -- with 24,000 men, and on Sept. 15 captured New York City. It would remain in British hands until the end of the war. • On Aug. 20, 1862, New York Tribune editor Horace Greeley publishes a blistering editorial, “The Prayer of Twenty Millions,â€? calling on President Abraham Lincoln to declare emancipation for all slaves. Unbeknownst to Greeley, Lincoln was already moving in the direction of emancipation. • On Aug. 24, 1873, William Henry Jackson becomes the first person to photograph Colorado’s elusive Mount of the Holy Cross, providing reliable proof of its existence. Two deep snow-filled ravines at 90-angles form a large cross on the steep northeast face of a 14,000-foot mountain peak. • On Aug. 19, 1909, the first race is held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indiana, now the home of the Indianapolis 500. The track’s surface of crushed rock and tar

proved a disaster, breaking up and causing the deaths of two drivers, two mechanics and two spectators.

ELECTRIC CO-OPS

• On Aug. 21, 1935, the Swing Era begins with Benny Goodman’s triumphant Palomar Ballroom performance in Los Angeles. When his relatively staid arrangements began to lose the young crowd, Goodman pulled out upbeat, syncopated rhythm arrangements -- to the crowd’s immense delight -- and swing was born. • On Aug. 25, 1950, in anticipation of a crippling strike by railroad workers, President Harry Truman issues an executive order putting America’s railroads under the control of the U.S. Army. The railroad strike lasted for 21 months. He used the same justification for seizing control of steel plants when the United Steel Workers union struck later in the year. • On Aug. 23, 1989, as punishment for betting on baseball, Cincinnati Reds manager Pete Rose accepts a settlement that includes a lifetime ban from the game. Rose continued to proclaim his innocence, but in 2004, Rose published “My Prison Without Bars,â€? in which he finally confessed to gambling on the Reds. (c) 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

Nick-Snips ARE YOU SMARTER THAN A 12-YEAR OLD? (Trivia Edition) By Nick Yanez

T

hese days in America, it’s not uncommon to hear people complain about our education system. Usually (though not always) the older generation grumbles about how easy it is to get a High School diploma in 2013. It’s hard to blame them, we’ve watched countries like China grow at an incredible rate economically because of their advancements in technology and science. It seems like the innovation in the world is at an all-time high; while America is slumping. Then again, I think back to when I was in High School. If I had an algebra question or a quiz on the Periodic table, my parents were the last people who could answer for me. It’s not that they were unintelligent, but they would openly admit that they had never learned that advanced of material when they were in school. So exactly where is this education criticism coming from? I think it’s safe to say that schools have gotten more difficult and more advanced over the last 50+ years. Despite that point, the education system in America has slumped; but it’s not parents or even grandparents who can complain about it.

A recently discovered quiz from the year 1912 proved rather difficult to many adults when the Bullitt County History Museum posed the questions online. The following are questions that were asked to 8th graders over 100-years ago in a standard test covering all academic subjects. Here are just four of several of the questions: 1. ARITHMETIC: Write in words, the following - a) .5764; b) .00003; c) .123416; d) 653.0965; e) 43.37 2. GRAMMER: Adjectives have how many degrees of comparison? 3. PYSIOLOGY: How does the liver compare in size with other glands in the human body? Where is it located? What does it secrete? 4. HISTORY: Name the last battle in the Civil War, War of 1812, and French and Indian War; name the commanders in each battle (on each side).

I find it highly unlikely that anyone reading this article answered all of those questions without flaw. If you did, you either deserve a round of applause from the community, or great shame for using google (because that’s the only way you pulled it off). I will no longer accept complaints about how much harder school was for my parents back in the day (I looked up a quiz from the 70’s too. I’m not impressed). I will also never pretend that my schooling was the most difficult challenge I’ve ever faced. I will however give credit to the brave little souls who faced the 8th grade final exam in 1912. It was a heck of a test. If I ever happen to come across such a person, I’ll give them a swift shake in the hand. Due to high likelihood that such an encounter will never occur, I’d like to go on record here in print – kudos fair citizen and congratulations on that middle-school diploma. You really earned it. And now, loyal reader, I present to you the answers (according to BullittCountyHistory.com). I know you were curious: QUESTION 1: a) five thousand seven hundred sixty-four ten-thousandths; b) three millionths; c) one hundred twentythree thousand four hundred (and) sixteen millionths; d) six hundred fifty-three and nine hundred sixty-five ten-thousandths; e) forty-three and thirty-seven one-hundredths QUESTION 2: Adjectives have three degrees of comparison (example: Good, Better, Best) QUESTION 3: The liver is the largest gland in the body. It lies below the diaphragm in the abdominal-pelvic region of the abdomen. It secretes bile. QUESTION 4: a) Civil War: Battle of Columbus, Georgia on 16 Apr 1865; commanders were Union General James H. Wilson and Confederate Major General Howell Cobb b) War of 1812: February 1815 at Fort Bowyer, British Force (no known commander) attacked American force led by fort commander William Lawrence who surrendered on 11 Feb 1815 c) French and Indian War: Battle of Signal Hill on 15 Sep 1762 with British forces led by William Amherst and French forces led by Guillaume de Bellecombe

LEO (July 23 to August 22) Some emerging matters could impede the Lion’s progress in completing an important project. Best advice: Deal with them now, before they can create costly delays. AUGUST 19, 2013

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Impatience with those who don’t keep up with you can cause resistance, which, in turn, can lead to more delays. Best to be helpful and supportive if you want results. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A surprise announcement from a colleague could put you on the defensive. Gather your facts and respond. You’ll soon find the situation shifting in your favor.

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your aspect continues to favor an expanding vista. This could be a good time to make a career move, and taking an out-of-town job could be a good way to do it. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Disruptive family disputes need to be settled so that everyone can move on. Avoid assuming this burden alone, though. Ask for -- no, demand -- help with this problem.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Time spent away from a project pays off with a new awareness of options you hadn’t considered before. Weigh them carefully before deciding which to choose.

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Patience is called for as you await word on an important workplace situation. A personal circumstance, however, could benefit by your taking immediate action.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Consider confronting that personal conflict while there’s still time to work things out. A delay can cause more problems. A longtime colleague might offer to mediate.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Don’t lose confidence in yourself. Those doubters are likely to back off if you demand they show solid proof why they think your ideas won’t work.

The bears do, in fact, eat the honey, but they’re really after the bees, their pupae and their larvae. • There are more than 2,000 species of plants that contain some form of cyanide. • If you are a logophile, you might know that the word “obstreperous” means “noisy and difficult to control.” You probably don’t realize, though, that the noun most likely to follow the word “obstreperous” is “teenager.” But I doubt you’ll be surprised. *** Thought for the Day: “Some editors are failed writers, but so are most writers.” -- T.S. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A temporary setback might cause the usually surefooted Goat some unsettling moments. But keep going. The path ahead gets easier as you move forward. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) There’s welcome news from the workplace. There also could be good news involving a relationship that has long held a special meaning for you. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You might still need to cut some lingering ties to a situation that no longer has the appeal it once held. In the meantime, you can start to explore other opportunities.
