elieve it or not, there is actually a right way and a wrong way to complain. For all you parents out there who have had to endure night after night of your child or children complaining about the dinner you’ve served or that they have “nothing” to wear for school the next day, this might not sound likely at all. There is no such thing as right or wrong when it comes to complaining; no complaining is good complaining. But in the business world or even as a consumer, there are definite do’s and don’ts when it comes to lodging a complaint. The way to correct way to complain in a restaurant is not the same as the correct way to complain about your boss. So how do you know what to do in each situation to be heard and find a speedy resolution to the problem? Leave it to Snippetz to lay it all out for you!

Reason #1: To “break the ice” – this is what you are doing when you complain about the weather to a complete stranger as you wait in line for your coffee at the local coffee shop.

There are really just two basic types of complaints: instrumental and expressive.

happens every day and there are several main reasons why we do.

Instrumental complaints are useful in that they are intended to achieve a certain goal.

Let’s say you order soup at your favorite restaurant and there’s a fly in it. If you complained to the server at the restaurant about the fly, it’s probably because you want something to be done about it. You probably want the server to solve the problem of your soup being inedible by bringing you a fresh bowl, sans fly. That’s the goal.

Reason #2: To avoid taking action – this is what you are doing when you complain about how hungry you are to your mom and she tells you to get a snack but you just complain more about how there’s nothing to eat when the pantry is full.

Reason #3: To control others – this is what you are doing when you complain to your friend about how much you dislike someone else in the attempt to sway their opinion of said person and side with you.

In expressive complaining, there isn’t really a goal in mind. The complainer is typically just trying to explain how they are feeling, often called venting. Complaining that your jeans are too tight is one example.

There isn’t really a goal in mind when you complain about the jeans; you’re just venting about something that’s bothering you.

And usually, you feel better after you’ve vented.

Reason #4: To demonstrate superiority – this is what you are doing when you complain about the driver ahead of you who failed to use their turn signal because you are implying that you are a better driver who always uses your turn signal.

Reason #5: To excuse anticipated poor performance or behavior – this is what you are doing when you storm into your office complaining about how awful the traffic was on your commute as a way to justify being late.

It’s this second type of complaining that can become a bit of a nuisance when someone does it all the time. While it can be helpful to vent to create a bond, connection or feeling of camaraderie with others who can empathize with how you feel, overusing expressive complaining can often do just the opposite. It can create a rift between people by highlighting the negative a bit too much. People are often turned off by this type of interaction if it happens more than necessary.

Reason #6: To be funny – this is what you

While these types of complaining are often considered the most common, there’s also the situation in which a complaint is completely necessary. Two very popular examples are while dining at a restaurant or when a product or service doesn’t meet your expectations. So how do you effectively handle a situation like that? Read on!

HOW TO COMPLAIN IN A RESTAURANT

We’ve all heard the horror stories about what can happen to your food if you complain about it while dining out. But people typically have a higher work ethic than that and will honestly try to satisfy their customers rather than exact some covert type of revenge on them. But complaining effectively can go a long way to determining what type of response you’ll get.

• Be clear, concise and calm. If you have a legitimate complaint such as your food was not hot when it should’ve been or the meal you were served wasn’t the one you ordered, it’s important to clear-

Continued from Page 2 ly, calmly and concisely explain the situation. Understand that mistakes happen and that it probably wasn’t done purposefully to frustrate or annoy you, and give the restaurant a chance to make it right.

• Understand what you’re ordering. If you aren’t clear on what you’re ordering, ask questions. Granted, it’s sometimes hard to know when to ask a question but if you are served something that wasn’t what you were expecting, don’t complain about the food. You ordered it, after all. But explaining the situation in a clear, concise and calm manner might just get you another meal that is more to your liking.

• Speak up! If you’re mostly done with your meal, it’s not wise to complain about it then. If it doesn’t meet your standards, say something right away. Restaurants probably won’t take your complaint seriously if you’ve licked your plate clean!

HOW TO COMPLAIN ABOUT A PRODUCT OR SERVICE

Outside of the food service industry, there are times when a product or service just isn’t up to snuff. That’s where the oftenfrustrating world of customer service representatives comes into play. Here are a few ideas for how to deal with these reps effectively.

• State your argument. Simply explain the problem, don’t come out swinging. The whole clear, concise and calm thing is very important in this step as well.

• Offer a solution. If you go into the conversation with a solution in mind, it makes the rep’s job much easier because they know what you want and then can work within their abilities to make that happen.

• Be respectful. We’ve all heard the phrase, “You’ll catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.” In most instances, that’s true. The rep you’re speaking to is the person who holds the resolution in the palm of their hands. If you want things solved quickly and satisfactorily, play nice.

• Stay calm. Freaking out on the customer service rep might result in their termination of the conversation and then you’re still in the same boat as you were before you attempted to negotiate a resolution.

• Only escalate if absolutely necessary. Sometimes you just can’t get anything accomplished with the customer service rep. In that instance, go over their head to a manager or supervisor . . . but don’t lose your cool! Follow the same steps as you did with the rep or you might just be wasting your time hoping for a resolution.

I

’m not referring to the unknown changes that a student will experience with the new school, a new environment, and the chaos of college life. I’m referring to the terrors that accompany the acceptance letter that so many students proudly present to their parents. After the congratulations are complete and time is made to actually read the letter an acronym will jump from the page destined to haunt many of our dreams – EFC, Expected Family Contribution. I don’t know what I was thinking 18 years ago, but nothing foretold of the shock that awaited me. After the scholarships, the grants, work-study programs and all the rest there was still better than $20,000 that needed to be paid.

The cost of college isn’t cheap. The average cost per year for an in state public is over $17,000. For a private school it is nearly $40,000. Of course my daughter would pick a private school. Here are a few steps you may want to take now to avoid the sticker shock that accompanies an acceptance letter.

RETIREMENT IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN COLLEGE It is hard to argue against the benefits of a college education. College graduates on average earn more and have a better quality of life. With that being said don’t put college funding ahead of your own retirement needs. Your first responsibility is your own financial well-being. If you cannot afford to fund your retirement and college, fund your retirement. There will be many more options to fund college than your retirement when money is needed.

START SAVING EARLIER AND OFTEN Start setting aside money for college as soon as you can afford it and put time on your side. There are a number of college savings plans out there. The most common are the 529 College Savings Plan and the Coverdell Education Savings Account. Each plan has its own strengths and weaknesses including contribution limits. However both plans offer tax deferred growth and tax-free withdrawals for qualified college expenses. For qualifying 529 plans there is even a state income tax deduction for contributions. Tax avoidance can go a long way in helping increase the funds available for those college costs.

SEEK HELP There are a number of professionals who specialize in college funding. If your student is close to college you may find it well worth your time to visit with one of these professionals. They can help you maximize the opportunities that are available to you.

Many parents fail to take advantage of the tax credits that can easily help recoup some college costs. Others have too many assets titled in the student’s name thus reducing the amount of financial aid that could be available. Get yourself educated. For parents of younger children it may make sense to visit with your current advisor to establish some type of savings program.

There is no getting around it, college isn’t cheap and it isn’t getting any cheaper. Add to that our current political situation and we can expect it to become even more complicated. But for those who will make the time to put together a plan and stay with it that acceptance letter does not have to be a nightmare.

MEETING OUR OWN EXPECTATIONS

W

By the time 50 came along, many of those goals had been sadly abandoned as the realities sank in. Unmet expectations and disappointments colored our lives. We could see the writing on the wall, we thought, in terms of future retirement, declining health and eventual low income. We didn’t see anything good down the road.

Wrong again. As seniors, it turns out, we’re happier than we thought we’d be.

hen we were young adults, we no doubt thought that we’d be less happy as we got older, that we were at our peak.

Once we reached age 50 and weren’t especially pleased because we hadn’t met all of our goals, we likely thought it was all downhill from there.

How does this work? Expectations.

A study of people between the ages of 17 and 85 shows that at two particular points in our lives, we are wrong in our guesses about how our lives will progress and how happy we’ll be.

It takes until around age 69 to figure out the benefits of getting older, and we no longer care about the goals that once consumed us. The key, researchers say, is letting go of regret.

When we were young, at age 23 (the first point in life where we were wrong), we expected great futures even though the reality wasn’t necessarily wonderful at the time.

We faced tough circumstances with student loans, home costs, financial pressures and raising young families, but we thought we could handle it and would accomplish much.

I wouldn’t want to be 23 again. Would you?

Through our lives, our expectations are different from our actual wellbeing, and the two don’t merge until much later. We’re victims of our own age discrimination, not expecting to be happy based on our own predictions.

• On Sept. 5, 1666, firefighters in London begin blowing up homes in a desperate attempt to halt the spread of a great fire through the city. By the time the fire was finally snuffed out the following day, more than 100,000 people had been left homeless. • On Sept. 7, 1776, during the Revolutionary War, the 8-foot-long American submersible craft Turtle attempts to attach a time bomb to the hull of British Admiral Richard Howe’s flagship Eagle in New York Harbor. It was the first use of a submarine in warfare. • On Sept. 6, 1915, a prototype tank nicknamed Little Willie rolls off the assembly line in England. It weighed 14 tons, got stuck in trenches and crawled over rough terrain at only 2 mph. For secrecy, production workers were told the vehicles would be used to carry water on the battlefield.

On the Bonneville Salt Flats of Utah, Campbell and his 2,500-horsepower car Bluebird made two runs over a 1-mile course at speeds averaging 301 mph. • On Sept. 8, 1945, U.S. troops land in Korea to begin their postwar occupation of the southern part of that nation, almost exactly one month after Soviet troops had entered northern Korea to begin their own occupation. Although the U.S. and Soviet occupations were supposed to be temporary, the division of Korea quickly became permanent. • On Sept. 2, 1969, America’s first automatic teller machine (ATM) makes its public debut, dispensing cash to customers at Chemical Bank in Rockville Center, N.Y. It wasn’t until 1971 that an ATM could handle multiple functions, including providing customers’ account balances. • On Sept. 4, 1972, U.S. swimmer Mark Spitz wins his seventh gold medal at the Summer Olympics in Munich and establishes new world records in all the events.

The record would stand until Michael Phelps took home eight gold medals at the Beijing Games in 2012.

ften times we are told that there is someone, or something, manipulating us. Whether it be the media trying to spin a story, or a magazine article sneaking their agenda in, there’s always influence. It’s everywhere we look. While many people will take anything they hear/ read/see with a grain of salt, some people are radically altered by other’s opinions.

If you think about, our opinions really are just a collection of other people’s thoughts; our parents, friends, peers, coworkers, idols. We derive our ideas and beliefs from someone, the form them into our own. No one believes what they believe without any influence whatsoever.

In most cases, though, it still comes down to you. You decide what to say. You decide what to do, what to believe, and how to live your life. The idea that someone else makes you do anything is absurd. We have to take responsibility for our own actions in life, whether it be rewarding or humiliating. That is unless of course… someone is controlling our brain.

Recently, two scientists studying at the University of Washington have figured out to use real-life mind control. Terrifying, I know! Andrea Stocco and research partner Rajesh Rao created a mind control cap made of swim caps in their experi-

ment. To make this successful trial even more incredible, it was done over the internet; the two men weren’t even in the same room.

The swim caps had electrodes and were hooked to an electroencephalography machine (look it up) to read electrical activity in the brain. The two men then separated, retiring to different labs and connecting over skype simply to communicate. They were not visible to each other. Rao, the “controller” was playing a video game with only his mind.

So, instead of actually hitting a button, he would simply imagine hitting the button with his finger. Specifically, he imagined hitting the space-bar, which triggers to ‘fire’ in the video game. In the other room, the “lab rat” Stocco moved his finger and hit the space bar simultaneously when Rao had the thought.

“It was both exciting and eerie to watch an imagined action from my brain get translated into actual action by another brain” Rao is quoted.

Of course, there is plenty of controversy.

Such power seems dangerous. The two scientists, along with an assistant professor in Psychology at UW disagrees.

In fact, all parties involved maintain that the technology would never work on someone who wasn’t voluntarily accepting the brain activity. If given the option to resist the command, one would easily succeed.

The idea behind this specific research is that it can potentially help pilots. For example, if a pilot were to become unconscious for any reason, the technology could ideally be used to help the flight attendant land the plane. Sounds legit.

However, it’s easy to understand why this technology scares so many people.

While this specific research may not be dangerous, it is a clear step in the direction of mind control. It’s like we’re living in a science fiction movie these days, technology is unstoppable. Of course, they still can’t seem to make a functional, problem free printer for home computers.
