hen you think of hypnosis, words like “trance” or “deep sleep” might come to mind. You might picture a man dangling a pocket watch in front of your face, slowly swinging it back and forth. You might hear his words telling you to keep your eyes on the watch and that you are beginning to feel very tired. So tired, in fact that your eyes can’t stay open and you drift into a semi-conscious state that allows your “hypnotist” to command you to walk around squawking like a chicken. Or perhaps you’ve actually used hypnotism to lose weight, stop smoking or stop biting your nails. Whatever your thoughts about or experiences with hypnotism may be, Snippetz decided we would do some digging to help shed some light on hypnosis!

HISTORY OF HYPNOSIS
BUSINESS, FINANCE AND LAW 7
Hypnotism has been around for a very long time, like thousands of years long. However, the idea of actually studying hypnosis to find out what it really is, what is really going on, didn’t emerge until the late 1700s.

They believe that with the conscious side of the brain temporarily subdued, the subconscious mind takes over. By doing so, hypnosis allows the hypnotist and the subject, who is still aware of what is going on, to bypass the conscious mind and access the subconscious directly. With unrestricted access to the subconscious mind, the hypnotist has access to all five senses as well as emotional feelings which are all regulated and controlled there. Subjects have reported tasting food that the hypnotist suggests they taste or feeling happy at the request of their hypnotist.
Austrian physician Franz Mesmer is the man to thank for bringing to light the original theories behind hypnosis. Initially, Mesmer thought that hypnosis was a mysterious, mystical force that flowed from the hypnotist into the person they are attempting to hypnotize. He termed this “animal magnetism.” Obviously, that’s not quite the same understanding we have of that term today. Anyway, the bottom line behind his animal magnetism theory was that the power of hypnosis belonged to the hypnotist and was a force that was inflicted upon someone.
Additionally, this complete access to the subconscious mind may allow subjects to gain access to experiences or events in their lives that they have completely blocked out or forgotten. Sometimes hypnotism has been used to recover some of these more painful memories but because the subject is extremely vulnerable and suggestible in this state, reporting false memories is a strong possibility.
While the original idea that something mystical was behind hypnosis was quickly debunked by his critics, Mesmer’s name is still strongly associated with hypnosis. In fact, hypnosis was originally termed mesmerism, after the man himself. We even continue to use “mesmerize” in modern speech.
While in this relaxed and focused state, hypnotists often report that their subjects are a lot like children. They become more playful and fanciful, whole-heartedly embracing the suggestions made by their hypnotist.
The terms “hypnotism” and “hypnosis” didn’t appear until about 1841 when a Scottish surgeon named James Braid created them, using the Greek word “hypnos” which means “to sleep” as the root of those words. His reason? He believed this trancelike state to be an altered form of sleep.
PROOF OF HYPNOTISM Scientific research strongly supports the theory that hypnotism alters the subject’s form of consciousness and the most compelling evidence comes from electroencephalographs or EEGs. EEGs measure electrical activity in the brain and research has shown that the brain produces different waves depending on the subject’s mental state.
WHAT IS HYPNOSIS? Having put the earlier ideas about hynosis behind them, psychiatrists have come to theorize that the exercises often utilized by a hypnotist to relax and focus their subject actually help to quiet the conscious mind.
Subjects have undergone EEGs simultaneously with hypnotism and the results of the studies have shown that the lower frequen-

Hypnotic subjects have also shown a decrease in activity in the left hemisphere of the brain, the side most neurologists believe to be the logical, deductive, reasoning side of the brain. Conversely, the right hemisphere shows an increase in activity. This side is often believed to control imagination and creativity. These results support the claim that subjects become more childlike and open to, shall we say, bizarre suggestions.
THE “MUST-HAVES” OF HYPNOTISM While specific methods vary, certain musthaves exist in order for hypnotism to actually work. 1). The subject must want to be hypnotized. 2). The subject must believe that they can be hypnotized. 3). The subject must eventually feel comfortable and relaxed.
HYPNOTIC TECHNIQUES Fixed-gaze induction or eye fixation – this is the pocket watch technique mentioned above. The ultimate goal is to get the subject to focus so intently on a particular object that they tune out all other distractions. The hypnotist tries to relax the subject by talking in a low, soothing voice. This technique has largely gone out of use because the majority of the population isn’t susceptible to it. Rapid – this technique is intended to overThe World of Hypnosis... Continued on Page 3

The World of Hypnosis... from Page 2 load the mind with abrupt, firm commands. The idea is that the subject will eventually succumb to the commands and give over control of their conscious mind. That’s assuming the hypnotist is convincing and forceful enough. This is still the most common technique used by stage hypnotists because their subjects are often so anxious about being on stage in front of an audience that they are at an increased susceptibility to these commands. Progressive relaxation and imagery – this technique is intended to ease the subject into full hypnosis through slow, soothing speech and gradual relaxation and focus. Self-hypnosis training most often uses this technique, as do most psychiatrists. Loss of balance – this technique employs slow, rhythmic rocking that creates a loss of equilibrium. Picture a parent rocking their child to sleep. This could technically be termed hypnosis . . . bet you never thought of yourself as a hypnotist! Ultimately, the ideal hypnotist is not someone with some hidden power to unlock the mysteries of your brain but rather someone with enough authority and charisma to convince you to do as they say.
HYPNOSIS FOR BEHAVIORAL MODIFICATION The most common use of behavioral modification hypnosis is habit-control hypnosis. This technique requires the hypnotist to focus in on one particular habit that is considered to be embedded in the subject’s subconscious. Examples include smoking and overeating. The idea is that the hypnotist is able to reverse or reprogram the subject’s subconscious mind to eliminate the

unwanted behavior.
Children’s and Women’s Summer Clothing
Reprogramming could include a suggestion that the particular behavior in question will cause an unwanted side effect, like the suggestion that smoking will cause nausea. Or the hypnotist could help increase the subject’s will power by suggesting that the unwanted behavior isn’t needed so the subject won’t succumb to the temptation.
SOPHIA’S WORLD
Behavior modification hypnosis reports relatively successful results. Here are some of the more impressive statistics:

• Over 90 percent of smoking subjects reported stopping the habit with the use of hypnosis. • About 87 percent of tobacco-using subjects reported stopping the habit with the use of hypnosis. • Subjects who have undergone hypnosis to control their smoking habit are twice as likely to stay smoke-free when evaluated two years later. • One study showed that hypnosis was three times as effective as the nicotine patch and 15 times as effective as good old willpower to overcome a smoking habit. • Another study claims that hypnosis is over 30 times more effective for weight loss than those who didn’t participate in hypnosis. • Subjects who received hypnosis lost more weight than 90 percent of the subjects who didn’t receive hypnosis and were able to maintain the weight loss for up to two years after hypnotic treatments had ended. • Traditional weight loss approaches can be twice as effective when coupled with hypnosis. • Hypnosis reduces the intensity and frequency of migraines.

THANK YOU!!! F
all is my favorite time of the year. The weather is cooler and the sun seems to shine sideways, highlighting all of the plants and flowers in our garden. Nature has been working hard all year and now it’s really putting on a grand finale of color. All of our ornamental grasses are in full effect, the Russian Sage is still going strong, and the Dragon’s Blood Sedum is burning bright red with shoots of bright red flowers. This is also the time when we buy our mums and our fall pansies.
The Bears Football Club of Monument would like to THANK many businesses that donated to our 5th Annual Auction & Dinner on September 7, 2013. All proceeds from this event go directly to our Football program at PRHS. Please show your appreciation by patronizing these establishments who have so graciously supported our kids!!

One of my favorites is the Pansy ‘Halloween Mix’. It’s a mix of blacks and oranges that last through many of our early light frosts. I am always looking for new and underappreciated plants and this time of year I think the Aster is often left in the shadow of the mighty mum so just to help a guy
out; I’d like to put a few varieties in the spotlight. When we think of fall bloomers I think mums come first to mind but asters are never far behind. And when it comes to Asters I have two favorites, wait no three favorites. I might have four, but I’ll just start with three. The first is one many of us have in our yards called ‘Purple Dome’, and when it blooms it is exactly that, a purple dome. A dark purple dome that blooms for a solid four weeks. I love it! The other is a little less common. It is called ‘Lady in Black’. I just love the name alone! As you might imagine it has dark purple/ black foliage and blankets itself with small pink/lavender flowers. The shape of the plant itself is irregular and because of its dark foliage it is a great accent plant before it blooms in the spring and summer too. The last one is ‘Alma Potschke’. She is a dark heavenly pink flower with cheery yellow centers and like the ‘Lady in Black’ becomes covered in blooms from late summer clear until frost. She is the hardiest of the three so you guys that are a little higher up, she is a good one for you! Now those are my favorites but there are many more in all shades of white, pink and purple. So if you’re looking to bring home some more color grab a mum or two, but give some love to the aster too! You’ll be glad you did.

high-end boutique, you may be financially better off by visiting reliable high-end consignment stores on the internet. Internet shopping is highly risky, but Yoogis’ Closet and The Real Real are authentic. That Fendi bag will still cost a small fortune but you won’t have to tell your kid “Sorry that I can’t sign you up for soccer this year, I have a fabulous handbag!!!”
N
ow that we have a few tips on style behind us, it’s time for the fun stuff. Let’s go Shopping! Shopping has become a national pastime. We shop out of boredom, as a social event, trying out a new look. And every now and then we shop because we actually NEED something to wear. Most of us have too many clothes in our closet and never run the risk of departing our homes naked. But shopping is a reality and one should be very skilled at proper shopping to find the items you will love for years to come. Let’s demystify the art of shopping. Here is a quick line-up clothing retailors 1) The budget department store. It started off simple enough as is a great place to get basic items and be in and out in a few minutes. It would be hard to get sidetracked by a pair of stiletto heels while shopping for socks. However, retailors have figured out how to ambush the unsuspecting customers with tantalizing accessories and jewelry. This encourages impulse shopping and our bulging closets and credit card bills are proof of this tactic’s success. Best to buy socks here. 2) The Upscale Department stores like Niemen Marcus and Lord and Taylor. These carry exceptional quality product. It helps to know the style of the store too. The merchandise is selected by buyers who know what they are doing and what customers want. This can result in market saturated looks at reduced individuality. The merchandise may be mainstream, but it is of good quality and taste. Also, a Los Angeles Saks is not the same as the 5th Ave one as they reflect the geography and taste of their markets.

4) The Outlet stores. These are pretty good for commercial and mass produced items, many high-quality, at a discounted price. Don’t be fooled by the reduced price though! It has been reduced for a reason. The stuff didn’t sell! That’s why it is called an “Outlet”. The merchandise is often “out there”. It is easy to be seduced by seemingly reduced prices. If you fall for it, you’ll have more extra clothing to give away next year. This frightening thought shouldn’t portend disaster though. The outlet is a good place to shop as long as you go with sense of purpose and stick to your guns.

6) The individually owned boutique. This is your best bet! Okay, I am biased here, I’m a boutique owner. I have a handful of favorites in Washington DC, NYC and Paris and rarely purchase anything outside these boutiques. I comb cities looking for boutique owners who are on target with their vision of fashion. I have never been disappointed with my purchases where each line was carefully selected by the owner. Establishing a relationship with the owner has saved me some money (owners often give discounts to regular customers) but it has saved me even more by not buying stuff that isn’t suited for me. Boutiques owners will never want their client looking anything less than fabulous. Their boutique is their personal vision of style and they have a commitment to their profession.
If you would like advice on finding your personal style Sophia’s World is open Th & Fr from 2-6 and on Saturday 12-5 when the owner is available. Visit Sophia’s World at 755 Highway 105 (btw Monument and Palmer Lake) at the West End Center.
3) The high-end boutique. Think of Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and Tiffany’s. Just think about it though. Unless your budget is limitless. If you really do need an item from a

YOU’RE SOMETHING SPECIAL
YOU THINK DIFFERENTLY THAN OTHERS By Dr. Ron Ross
T
he first and most provable difference between you and everyone else on the planet is that no one is constructed like you. Your body is different from anyone who has ever lived or will ever live – different on the inside and out. No person on earth comprehends things like you do. No one constructs sentences like you do or reacts to these words the way you do. You have your own absolutely unique way of comprehending people, places, things, words, and events. Let me give you an example: If you hear a baby cry your reaction will depend completely on whether or not you are the mother of the baby or just someone passing by. A mother will have a sense of urgency and take action while a passer-by will likely just keep walking. Here’s why: everyone sees things from a different perspective, endows things with different meanings, and assigns different values to every person and thing they encounter. Let’s look at each of those individually. Perspective: You think differently than others because of your unique perspective. No one sees things precisely from the same point-of-view that you do. The most common example of this is blind men feeling different parts of an elephant. Each one believes his description is correct and the others wrong. Yet, all are correct and all are wrong. It’s a matter of perspective. Meaning: You think differently from others because you assign your own unique meaning to things. In any town
square in the world, the appearance of a cross (the symbol of Christianity), or a Star of David (the symbol of Judaism), or a crescent moon (the symbol of Islam), would each cause a totally different reaction from the individuals who view them because of the varying meanings they assign to each icon.

PALMER LAKE WELLNESS CENTER
Values: You think differently because your values are different. What you see or experience becomes good or bad, right or wrong, important or unimportant, repulsive or attractive, dangerous or safe, humorous or boring, etc. based on your values that flow from your morals, religion, customs, ethnicity, social class, etc.
TRI-LAKES PREMIER ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE CENTER
Does this mean that you have your truth and I have my truth? Certainly not! You can believe the earth is flat or that Elvis is still alive if you want to – that doesn’t make it true. You can “feel” that something is real but feelings don’t authenticate anything except feelings. Even seeing something doesn’t make it true. Ask any three eyewitnesses to a car accident to tell you what happened and each of their stories will differ to some degree, yet there is only one accurate and complete narrative of what happened.
OFFERING THE FINEST QUALITY AND LOWEST PRICES! We have re-designed the Palmer Lake Wellness Center to provide our clients with our very best!
So when it comes to thinking, your thoughts are yours and your perception is unique to you. So it is best to test your judgment with objective facts, compare meanings and values with reality, and keep an open mind to the possibility of misperception. And most important, remember the human tendency is to always see things your way.

THE RULES OF MONEY
Q
uickly now, which would you rather have at the end of 31 days – a million dollars or a penny that has been doubled each and every day? If you are like most people you would have chosen the $1 million. Unfortunately, like most people you would have chosen poorly. That humble penny, doubling every day, would have grown to over $10 million -$10,737,418.24 to be exact. Don’t believe me? Do the math. One cent becomes two, two becomes four, four becomes eight, eight sixteen and on it goes until 5 million becomes 10 million. That is the power of compounded interest, a power that is often overlooked and grossly misunderstood when we talk about money. Here are a few other rules of money that are oftentimes overlooked.
Is It A Need Or Is It A Want

The Endless Search For More
Sadly money does not come with operating instructions. For most of us a lot of time was spent on learning how to make money. Unfortunately, throughout that education, not a lot of time was spent on how to manage money and use it effectively. Make the time to learn how to make sound financial choices. In the long-term you’ll be glad you did.
By understanding the opportunity costs of our financial choices and making the time to understand those choices we can make better financial decisions. Every time we choose to spend money we are making a choice. We are giving up other opportunities in order to fulfill a current need or want. Is it better to buy new furniture or set aside the money for the kid’s college
PO Box 39 Monument, CO 80132
We have all been in situations where we have incurred expenses that can never be recovered. Whether it be a car that needs a new motor, an investment that only goes South or something else that seems to require an endless stream of money. The sunken cost myth is just that, a myth, a belief that somehow if we only invest more time, more money or more effort we can recover what has been promised. That is a fallacy. Don’t throw good money after bad. In investing, I find too often investors will hold onto an investment and even invest more with the hopes that they will at some point at least break even. The cost unfortunately was lost opportunity and better use of resources. Make your decision to invest your time, your money, or your talents based upon the facts today and not upon your choices made yesterday.
How we choose to spend our money is a choice. By understanding the difference between what is really needed and what it is we want we can avoid becoming a victim of circumstance. Our financial needs are really quite simple, food, shelter and clothing. Everything else is merely a want; however, our wants can be endless. Too often I find that many have put themselves in an unnecessary position of hardship (read debt) because they failed to realize the difference between what is needed and what is wanted. By making the choice to live well within your means you can put yourself in the position of financial control. And that is a strong financial place to be.
Every Option Has Costs
CHUCK MAHER CFP
Sunken Cost Myth
With every financial choice comes risk, especially when we make the decision to invest. When we accept a greater risk with our investments i is reasonable to expect a potentially greater return. If you choose to invest in US government bonds you can expect a high degree of safety and a very low return on your investment. When you invest in a US corporation you have the opportunity for a much higher return, however, that return carries with it the risk of losing some or even all of your investment. I would encourage you to avoid investments that promise high guaranteed returns with little or no risk. There ain’t no such thing as a free lunch.
It is only natural to want a better life. A raise at work or a new position may well make it possible to get a nicer home or a better car. Unfortunately, for too many, it becomes far too easy to presume on the future – that those raises and promotions will continue – and establish a lifestyle based upon those assumptions. When the raises and promotions don’t come they oftentimes put themselves in the position where debt is used to satisfy their expectations. Thus creating a lifestyle, based upon debt, that can lead to financial ruin. It is better to find happiness somewhere other than in our possessions.
Honoring God with Your Financial Blessings

SNIPPETZ WEEKLY MAGAZINE ®
say they have at least one barrier to managing their health condition.
ALL ABOUT US
T
he results of the annual “United States of Aging Survey” are in, and we’re doing well!
The National Council on Aging survey, taken by phone calls to 4,000 seniors earlier this year, focused on those of us age 60 and older, with subgroups of older seniors (age 80 and over), lowincome seniors and those with chronic health conditions. Here are some of the results: • In 2012, only 42 percent of seniors said that their lives for the previous year had been “normal.” In 2013, that number jumped to 57 percent. • A whopping 84 percent of us have at least one chronic medical condition, but the same 84 percent say it’s not difficult to continue independently with regular activities. However, with lowincome seniors, 75 percent of those with one or more chronic conditions
When it comes to finances, 66 percent of us say it’s “easy” or “somewhat easy” to get by with monthly expenses. Less than 20 percent have had to reduce regular spending. Still, more than half of us are worried whether savings and income will last the rest of our lives. As to the future, while many seniors say the community is responsive to their needs, only half think their community is doing enough for the future needs of seniors. Most of us are wired up! We use cellphones (75 percent), computers (68 percent) and the Internet (65 percent). High-tech seniors want to stay in touch with family and friends (87 percent), and keep up with the world, learn new things and stay mentally sharp in equal numbers. Half of those who don’t use new technology cite cost as the reason.

Coronado explored much of the southwestern United States, but never found the fabled Seven Cities of Gold he had sought for decades, and died believing that he had been a shameful failure. • On Sept. 21, 1780, during the American Revolution, American Gen. Benedict Arnold meets with British Major John Andre to discuss handing over West Point to the British, in return for money and a high position in the British army. The plot was foiled, and Arnold, a former American hero, became synonymous with the word “traitor.â€? • On Sept. 19, 1827, after a duel turns into an all-out brawl, Jim Bowie kills a banker in Alexandria, La., with an early version of his famous Bowie knife. The actual inventor of the Bowie knife, however, was probably not Jim Bowie, but rather his equally belligerent brother, Rezin Bowie.
• On Sept. 16, 1893, the largest land run in history begins with more than 100,000 people pouring into the Cherokee Strip of Oklahoma to claim valuable land that had once belonged to Native Americans. With a single shot from a pistol, the mad dash began. • On Sept. 20, 1960, California hot rodder Mickey Thompson takes another shot at the world land-speed record. Although he only managed to coax his streamlined Challenger up to about 378 mph on his first run and 368 mph on the second, his speedy trips across the Bonneville Salt Flats won worldwide fame for the car and its driver. • On Sept. 18, 1974, actress Doris Day, one of the biggest box office draws of the 1950s and ‘60s, wins a $22.8 million malpractice suit against her former lawyer. After the death of her third husband, Martin Melcher, in 1968, she discovered that her $20 million in life savings had disappeared. • On Sept. 17, 1983, 20-year-old Vanessa Williams becomes the first black to win the Miss America crown. Williams later launched a successful singing and acting career, including a featured role on the hit television sitcom “Ugly Betty.â€?

DIAMONDS A DOZEN By Nick Yanez
T
hey say a diamond is a girl’s best friend. They also say woman are from Venus. Where do these silly phrases come from? Marketing, essentially. The first quote is just an ad slogan. It’s since become a phrase linkable to “Dog is a man’s best friend”. Of course comparing dog’s and diamonds is asinine; with the friendly animal being superior. But as a man, I would think that. The second quote was a book about men and women. It was a best seller, and people have pretty much been using the phrase, along with “men are from mars” ever since. I’m about to blow both of these silly catchphrases away with some new scientific facts. I came upon an article this week from a couple of months back that suggests women may actually be from 55 Cancri e. Which, in turn, would explain the diamond thing. Space study people (lesser known as scientists) have made what some would consider a fascinating discovery. The team, led by a man named Nikku Madhusudhan, is a group of researchers at Yale. Smart people tend to go there, so you can believe this next part. They have discovered a planet twice the size of Earth. With immense density, it is their best guess that the planet’s surface is solid diamond! The name of the planet, officially, is 55 Cancri e. “The surface of this planet is likely covered in diamond and granite rather than water and granite” Madhusudhan said in a statement from Yale. He says that this is likely “our first glimpse of a rocky world with a fundamentally different chemistry from Earth.”
Of course, as desirable as a diamond covered world sounds, it wouldn’t treat mankind too well. By calculating time intervals that the massive planet blocks out light from its host star, the team estimates that the planet makes its entire orbit in just 18 hours. That means this planets entire year is shorter than one day on Earth. The details are dizzying. The surface temperature is best guessed to be somewhere just under 4,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Too hot for this Colorado raised boy. Too hot for probably just about any living creature in the universe, I’m guessing. So you know I’m not touting a questionable story, the findings of this planet have been publicized in the Astrophysical Journal Letters; whatever that means. Unfortunately, with it being 40 light-years way in the constellation Cancer the Crab, the planet seems like an improbable place to mine. Despite its unique and valuable surface, don’t count on any Cancri-cut diamonds for your next engagement. I’m sure the extremely hot temperatures don’t help either. But perhaps, somewhere out there, Jared and Mr. Zale are fashioning an evil plan to journey to the planet. After forming a temporary alliance, they will travel and take their big Diamond Driller to extract the greatest shiny rocks the universe has ever seen. Their jewelry-based empires will grow to take over the world until erupting into an inevitable civil-war. Then we’ll all be caught up in a battle too ruthless to leave any survivors. We’ll be forced to build a ship capable of surviving any temperatures, hot and cold. As the Earth lays down for its dying breath, what remains of mankind will go to the only remaining safe haven in the Universe. Yes, 55 Cancri e! Oh, the irony. The sweet, sweet irony.
