“The coming and going of the seasons give us more than the spring-times, summers, autumns and winters of our lives. It reflects the coming and going of the circumstances of our lives like the glassy surface of a pond that shows our faces radiant with joy or contorted with pain.” – Gary Zukav, author
FIRST NATIONAL BANK MONUMENT
T
he beauty of the changing seasons is undeniable, especially in a place as spectacular as Colorado. Winter is a quiet time with softly drifting snow and jack rabbits hopping through the bleach-white fields. The spring brings a lovely display of budding trees with pink and white and purples flowers on display. Summer gives us bright green grass and trees hanging heavy with various fruits. But fall brings an explosion of color across the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains and out onto the plains to the east. Trees burst in bright reds, deep oranges and sunny yellows. While the trees in the city are a great starting place to enjoy the fall colors, there are certain spots across the state that provide exceptional viewing opportunities. Snippetz has ‘em all right here so read on and get moving . . . the leaves won’t stick around for long!

LENGTH OF DAYS AND NIGHTS As the length of the days shortens and the nights get longer, the timeframe in which a leaf can produce chlorophyll is reduced. When the chlorophyll is broken down during the bright but shorter days, the leaf doesn’t have enough time before the cooler night to replace the chlorophyll that’s been broken down. With no chlorophyll to mask the carotenoids and anthocyanins, they finally get to show off their different hues!

anthocyanins are formed. Bright sunshine will also break down chlorophyll and increases carotenoid and anthocyanin production. The combination of bright, sunny, dry days and cold dry nights produces the most vivid array of fall leaf colors.
Three categories of pigments lend a contributing hand in the changing colors of the leaves. • Chlorophyll – this is the pigment responsible for the leaves’ green color. Using chlorophyll, plants can convert sunlight into sugars for their food. Chlorophyll hides the carotenoids and anthocyanins that are responsible for the autumnal colors like yellow, orange and red.
WHICH TREES DISPLAY WHICH COLORS?
• Carotenoids – these gives leaves their yellow, orange and brown colors. When the nights get longer and the days get shorter, the production of chlorophyll slows down and eventually stops completely. What are left are the carotenoids and the anthocyanins.
Red oaks, red maples and sumac produce anthocyanins in great quantities and provide the best display of bright reds and purples. If those are the colors you enjoy, those are the trees you need to seek. Conversely, birch, hickory, cottonwood and aspen trees produce an abundance of carotenoids and display the brightest golds and yellows.
• Anthocyanins – these give leaves the red, purple and blue colors. As mentioned above, these pigments are hidden by the bright green chlorophyll during the long, sunny summer days.
WHERE ARE THE BEST VIEWING PLACES? Get ready to pack a lunch and head to some of the following places to truly enjoy the splendor that fall brings to the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. Before you head out, make sure to check with the United States Forest Service for up-to-date road closures due to recent flooding. Also, be sure to check the website http://www. fs.usda.gov to find out when these areas will be in peak color since this will vary from year to year. • Maroon Bells – located southwest of Aspen, Maroon Bells is a set of 14ers in the Elk Mountains separated by about one third of a mile. The peaks, Maroon Peak and North Maroon Peak, can be seen from the Maroon Bells Scenic Area but the area is only accessible by bus. Several exceptions exist but if you plan to head here
You’ve probably noticed small groups of trees that have turned yellow long before
WEATHER

How brightly the colors in the leaves appear depends greatly on the weather. Lower temperatures break down chlorophyll and as long as the temperature doesn’t dip below the freezing level, carotenoids and

the others around them. The reason is most likely due to the aspen tree. Aspens typically reproduce by sprouting a new tree from the root of an existing tree, making a genetically identical tree. These small clones will change color at the same time as the original tree but due to subtle differences in the genetic makeup of the different groups of aspen trees, each group will change in its own time.

to see the changing leaves, make sure to check the website http://stayaspensnowmass.com for information on when you can go and what you may need to pay, just to be on the safe side. • Kebler Pass – boasting one of the largest aspen groves in the world, Kebler Pass is located west of Crested Butte on Gunnison County Road 12. The 30-mile gravel road peaks at the 10,007-foot summit of Kebler Pass. Continuing along the road on Ohio Pass to Gunnison rounds out the trip. • Dallas Divide and Lizard Head Pass – driving along Colorado Highway 145 between Telluride and Dolores, you’ll go over the Dallas Divide and summit Lizard Head Pass. If you want a more aerial view of the change leaves, stop off in Telluride and take a free gondola ride from downtown to Mountain Village. • Grand Mesa – this flat-topped mountain, which is actually the world’s largest, is located between the towns of Mesa to the north and Cedaredge to the south. Taking Colorado Highway 65 from Cedaredge to Interstate 70 provides the best viewing of this scenic location. • La Veta Pass – following U.S. 160 west from Highway 50, you’ll find yourself going through La Veta Pass, which peaks at more than 9,400 feet. This pass is located in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and provides excellent viewing of the Spanish Peaks and the changing leaves in the San Luis Valley.

If you have children, especially young ones, taking a 3 hour drive with no pit stop to get all the pent up energy out is probably not high on your list of fun things to do this fall. But there are some great ideas for how to take in the autumn colors and include your family, too. Here’s a couple to consider.
Visit WWW.SOPHIAS-WORLD.ORG for information and tickets on this FUNdraiser
• The Oh My God Road – this road is less than an hour’s drive from downtown Denver, located between Idaho Springs and Central City. It provides a fun trip over winding roads, between abandoned houses and hoist frames, remnants of the Colorado gold rush. Ghost towns and cemeteries make for a good informal history lesson, as well as inspiration for Halloween!

• Mueller State Park – just a quick 45minute drive from Colorado Springs, Mueller State Park provides excellent, familyfriendly hiking trails, opportunities to see wildlife and prime fall color viewing. It also gives an impressive view of the back side of Pikes Peak, something many of us don’t get to see as often as we might like! • Georgetown Loop Railroad – less than an hour from Denver, this historic railroad provides a blast from the past by touring through old mining areas and Victorian villages. The train runs on weekends and holidays through mid-October so get going quick before the railroad closes up for the season.

FALL AND WINTER WATERING

don’t have to convince anyone that this year has been hard on our plants. It was a dry winter, followed by a dry spring and a very hot and dry summer. Now that fall is here and we have been getting a few wonderful rainy days we’re finally off the hook for watering. Right? Wrong. Especially after a drought, watering correctly during the fall and winter is absolutely crucial to the health of our plants and will determine how well they perform the following spring.
Gina Forero, B.M., M.S. The Juilliard School • New York, NY
In addition to watering just for the sake of keeping our plants hydrated it helps prevent the ground from freezing and thawing and the problems that can create.
That’s not so bad is it? If in the past you didn’t know the importance of fall and winter watering you will be pleased at the difference this makes in your plants vitality and survival! So on those days where the temperature is above 45 degrees and Of course we all have our fingers there’s no snow on the ground try to crossed that this winter will be a wet set a mental reminder to water! one! Now that it’s October we can certainly cut down on watering, but it is recommended to water one to two times a month from October thru March. For large established trees this means ten gallons per inch in diameter of the trunk each time you water. It’s best to water at least a few feet from the trunk and out to the farthest branch line or drip line and water like this in four different spots around your tree to provide an even watering. You can adjust this amount according to any moisture we might get. We will get! Keeping fingers crossed. Apply five gallons of water for small shrubs and eighteen gallons for large shrubs (over 6’). Any newly planted trees and shrubs should be watered more frequently, like three times a month. Perennials will also benefit from winter watering.

Our summer was dry and most of us were on water restrictions. So what does that mean for the health of our trees and shrubs? Damage from drought is often unnoticeable until many months later and right

n the next few weeks we are going to focus on the individually owned boutiques in the Tri-Lakes Community. In the upcoming weeks I will spotlight each of them and their unique sense of personal style. This week we’ll investigate the Fall 2013 Collections at Sophia’s World. Sophia’s World is founded on the basis of fashion and social entrepreneur ship. I have always been impressed by the power of small businesses to create a local community as well as positively impact the lives of people as far away as Africa. The lines selected at this boutique are unique and inventory is limited to three or less of each style. The items are cutto-order and are not mass produced. This ensures women have the ability to truly find their style. The garments are manufactured in NYC, Europe and also include Fair Trade lines. The Fair Trade lines from Africa, Haiti and Peru empower women owned businesses in developing countries. People need opportunities and resources, not handouts. By carrying lines of clothing and jewelry from developing countries a system of support and access to markets are established. The Apocheta lines from Peru employ women who have been abused and abandoned. They are taught weaving skills and create fabulous sweaters and dresses with intricate patterns from baby alpaca. The items are unique and hand-made bringing artistically designs to fashion forward women and children in the TriLakes Community. This is purchase with a purpose! Fall 2013 lines also include unique lines from Spain, Germany, Italy, Croatia and Latvia. One of the most exciting is the Adventures des Toiles. This is a Parisian line where designers have integrated motifs and colors based on museum paintings. The designs are subtle, yet unique. There is also a brightly colored line of wool

outer-garments shipped from Croatia. The vibrant colors and intricate detailing ensure that each piece is unique as the woman who wears it. There are casual, yet upscale, apparel from Chan Luu, Beate Heyman and Angels Never Die. These represent a “go-to-piece”. They are wearable for many situations and can be dressed up or down depending on accessories. The majority of the lines carried are from off-the-grid designers. Sophia’s World aspires to selecting the best and highest quality designers the world has to offer. It is likely the only boutique in the Colorado Springs area of its kind. These pieces are unique, wellmade and last for years to come.

This is more than a boutique. It is a business that gives back to society by sponsoring local schools, providing orphaned refugees the opportunity to attend boarding school, and organizing the first annual “Dressed to Give” charity fashion show. The Fall 2013 collections, along with other upscale boutiques and jewelers of the TriLakes community will join together for a runway event at the Secret Window Fine Art Gallery on 12 October. The Military Artistic Healing program delivering art therapy and counseling to active duty and veterans struggling with combat related stress is the focus of the 2013 Dressed to Give event. Art Work from the Wounded Warriors will be on Display. Join us for an afternoon of champagne, light hors d’oeuvres, music and a live runway show. It will be a FUNraiser that supports a worthwhile cause. Tickets can be purchased from participating boutiques and through www.SophiasWorld.org.

A new treatment employs a laser. As with oral medicines, it’s expensive and most insurers don’t cover the cost. Results are promising but not guaranteed.
DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Third letter, same request. Please tell me how to get rid of fungus under a toenail. -B.K. ANSWER: Toenail fungus is prevalent among older people, and often, the infected person has no idea where he or she picked it up. The big toe’s nail is the one the fungus seems to like the best. The nail turns yellow, becomes thick and brittle, and has crumbly material extending from its edge under the nail to its base. The nail doesn’t usually hurt or itch. It just looks awful. Treatment for nail fungus is less than a huge success. Penlac (ciclopirox) Nail Lacquer is applied directly to the nail. The cure rate isn’t impressive. Oral medicines have the best results, but the results aren’t something to write home about. Further, they’re expensive, and often are not covered by insurance. One such medicine is Sporanox (itraconazole). It’s taken twice a day for one week of each month, for three or four months. Liver enzymes

If the nail isn’t bothersome, if it’s not leading to infections of the toe or foot and if a person isn’t a diabetic, many decide to live at peace with the infected nail. It isn’t likely to shorten life.

Think about it; when was the last time you felt something so deeply that you were moved to tears? When was the last time you were truly afraid? When was the last time you were filled with great joy or enraged with anger? What did it feel like? Where were you when it happened? Did you look around and notice that others did not share the same emotion? Did you feel the need to apologize for your emotional response?

hat you hate, love, fear, laugh at, cry about, or observe without sensation is determined by your own unique and wholly owned emotional structure. You and I could cheer for the same football team, yet experience it in a variety of ways. You could attend a concert with your best friend and each of you would be moved by a different song. Two girlfriends for life could watch the same sad movie and one would cry while the other would not. It’s because each of us places a different emotional value on every word spoken, every deed performed, and every event observed.
Nothing influences every aspect of your life as much as your emotions. Your emotions are the arbiter of the extremes between passion and indifference, love and hate, faith and fear, hope and despair, joy and sorrow, pleasure and irritation, good and bad, anger and calm, etc. Do you remember how you felt when you bought a new car? Do you remember your feelings when you saw the first dent or scratch on that car? How about the first time you were dumped
Emotions are how you respond to a feeling of pain, pleasure, attraction or repulsion. They are the physiologically based responses to your feelings,
7
Everything in your life is impacted by your emotions. They are what empower you or emasculate you, clarify your thoughts or confuse them, embarrass you or cheer you, scare you or comfort you. Your emotions are the most compelling force in your life. How you manage your passions is one of the greatest challenges in life because any change in your world will begin in the confines of your emotions. Someone once said that if you were to use a dictionary to complete the sentence, “I feel ______,” that you could list almost 2000 words. That’s a lot of emotion. And the way you deal with those emotions is very much a part of what makes you something special. Model T Ford is completed in Detroit. The cheapest one initially cost $825, or about $18,000 in today’s dollars. It had a 22-horsepower, four-cylinder engine that could run on gasoline or hemp-based fuel.
• On Oct. 6, 1683, encouraged by William Penn’s offer of 5,000 acres of land in the colony of Pennsylvania and the freedom to practice their religion, the first Mennonites arrive in America aboard the Concord. The German Mennonites were founded in Europe by Menno Simons in the 16th century.
• On Sept. 30, 1954, the USS Nautilus, the world’s first nuclear submarine, is commissioned by the U.S. Navy. In August 1958, Nautilus accomplished the first voyage under the geographic North Pole. After a career spanning 25 years and almost 500,000 miles steamed, Nautilus was decommissioned in 1980.
• On Oct. 2, 1780, British Major John Andre, an accomplice of Benedict Arnold, is hanged as a spy by U.S. military forces in Tappan, N.Y. Andre wrote a letter to Gen. George Washington asking that he be executed by firing squad, that being a more “gentlemanlyâ€? death than hanging.
• On Oct. 3, 1967, writer, singer and folk icon Woody Guthrie dies in New York. Guthrie, originally from Oklahoma, introduced a form of music called protest folk. Most famous was “This Land Is Your Land,â€? written in 1940 and first recorded in 1944.

Both Confederate and Union armies experimented with using balloons to gather military intelligence in the early stages of the war, but the balloons proved to be dangerous and impractical for most situations.

Singer wrote in Yiddish about Jewish life in Poland and the United States, and translations of his work became popular in mainstream America as well as Jewish circles. Brakes
Fact: Failed brakes kill people. There's no nice way to say that. Have your brakes checked once a year. This is not an area to skimp on cost. Many cut-rate brake "specialists" pull you in with their cheap $89.95 brake job and then install cheap aftermarket parts and then up-sell you on calipers, wheel cylinders and rotors. (I have worked on vehicles for over 33 years and have replaced less than 2 dozen calipers due to leakage.) I have seen hundreds of these cheap brake jobs come through dealerships to get re-done because of noise/vibration and multitude of other complaints. There is a reason why the cutrate places can cut their rates….poorly trained, hourly workers and cheap parts. Lesson: Don't trust just any "Joe-Blow" to install the car part that stops your family's car when you are going 75 miles an hour on the interstate! WebsitesByRobyn.com
Car Repair at a Dealership vs an Independent
If you’re really, really young however, fun and stupid seems to govern regular day-to-day activity. I’m speaking of toddlers specifically. Pre-school is actually a pretty popular grade among attendees. You get to color and take a nap. They give you an A+. Imagine that.
Of course, the feat is only impressive if the kids are actually learning. Based on a Youtube video of a 4-year old former student of the makeshiftacademy, I’d say they’re picking up on authentic DJ techniques. Weiss seems to be a consummate professional when it comes to teaching her craft. Cool Pony is one of the hottest spots for young families in Brooklyn these days. It is more appealing to the wealthy however, as patrons are asked to pay $200 per 45-minute class. But, you know what they say – If you want to drop the beat, you gotta drop the cash! Oh wait, I just came up with that myself. Maybe I should start a class for toddlers where I instruct them in the art of made up slogans! (Thinking) I could build an empire. (Thinking more) in downtown Monument. This is a gold mine. I’ll call it Awesome Possum.
bout a month ago, children and teens alike returned to the cruel full-time job they refer to as school. Whether it be grade, middle, or high, most adolescence view going to school on a daily basis negatively. Sure, some teenagers enjoy seeing their friends and driving their cars before and after classes, but for the most part they don’t want to be there. Who can blame them? Wouldn’t we all rather be living up our youth with minimal responsibilities and maximum opportunities to do stupid and fun things?

But who says it must be an instrument they learn? EMC, or Electronic Dance Music, has taken the world - and the charts - by storm over the last decade. There is no easier form of music to learn than being a DJ. In one of Weiss’s music classes, all six students were under the age of 3. That’s incredible. Where else can toddlers legitimately learn a musical skill at such a fragile age? Nowhere that I’ve heard of.
By Nick Yanez
Fact: In order to maintain their franchise licenses, dealerships must pay for training their technicians and providing special tools and equipment. They must be "up to speed" on the latest technology, methods, training, and equipment. Dealers have access to proprietary repair information for diagnosis and repair to which the independent garages have limited access. Dealerships work on the makes and models that they sell, day in and day out. Since they are very familiar with the particular car line, they can pinpoint a problem quickly and accurately. Independent shops may be cheaper in some instances, but their technicians work on hundreds of makes, models and year of vehicles and cannot be experts on everything.

So what if I told you that pre-school got less academic and more fun all at once!? I’m referring to a new Brooklyn pre-school ran out of a thrift store that teaches infants and toddlers to mix and produce beats. It’s DJ’ing school exclusively for people who have yet to fully develop their motor skills. The name is Cool Pony. The game is electronic music for babies.

Founded by semi-renown DJ/composer Natalie Elizabeth Weiss, the school aims to teach a new form of music to children at a young age. “The difference between listening to Mozart and electronic music is that you can’t pick up a Cello when you’re three months old but you can push play” Weiss is quoted saying, in what feels like a statement to her

skeptics. And with that, she has a point. Learning music is considered a great hobby for children to pick up at a young age. It stimulates the mind and has been associated with better brain development in several studies. But what instrument can a child learn at 2-years old? Realistically, none.
See you all next week, when I’ll give you the official web address to enroll your children in the Awesome Possum Academy (APA) for the low tuition of $30,000 a semester. Don’t miss this opportunity! ooth and gum disease are one of the most common health problems veterinary professional see in dogs and cats. Periodontal (gum) disease is currently the #1 diagnosed problem in dogs and cats over the age of three. Periodontal disease is caused by plaque, a colorless ďŹ lm that contains large amount of bacteria, which builds up on the teeth. If left unchecked, periodontal disease can damage gums and the supporting structures around the roots of the teeth, leading to mouth pain and tooth loss. The bacteria can also enter the bloodstream and slowly damage vital internal organs such as the liver, kidneys, heart and lungs. Treating periodontal disease is one of the most cost effective procedures you can do for the health and well-being of your pet. Fractured teeth can be a common problem in any age pet. There are many warning signs that your pet might be developing dental problems such as:. • • • •

gums. If you notice stains or other build up on the teeth, bleeding or swollen gums, missing teeth, or foul breath, your pet warrants an exam to see if there are signs of dental disease or a need for a professional dental cleaning. Pets will not tolerate having their teeth cleaned without using general anesthesia. A complete cleaning cannot be done while your pet is awake. Many pet owners avoid dental procedures because they fear the risks of anesthesia. Today’s modern anesthetics and monitoring equipment make anesthesia safer than ever before. Your veterinarian will assess your pet’s health, review blood tests and determine the safest anesthetic for your pet to reduce the risks. It is important that you discuss any fears and concerns you have with your veterinarian. Deciding against treatment because of the risk of anesthesia can adversely affect your pet’s health. The good news is that with professional cleanings and good home care, most dental disease is preventable or even reversible. A pro-active approach and regular dental care can help maintain good oral health throughout your pet’s life. Palmer Lake Veterinary Clinic is making October “Pet Dental Awareness Month. Now through the end of October, we are offering a Free Dental Exam and 10% off total cost of a professional dental cleaning. Includes pre-anesthetic blood work, I.V. Fluids, anesthesia, and professional cleaning. (Tooth extractions or additional dental procedures not included)

EATING TO WIN W
hether you’re a weekend warrior or actively participate in sports, you need to eat to win. Eating for performance is often overlooked by athletes. A peak-performance diet is very similar to a normal, healthy diet. Carbohydrates, protein, fat and liquids are important components of a sports diet. Each of these nutrients should be included in your diet every day. Carbohydrates Carbohydrates should comprise about 60 percent of your daily diet. Carbs are the energy source for your muscles and brain. In fact, your brain uses only carbs for energy. Without enough carbs, your body will break down protein, like your muscles, to fuel your activity. Foods with carbs include vegetables, fruit, dairy products, grains, breads, pasta, rice and crackers. Try adding more whole grains to your diet, like whole-grain bread, whole-wheat pasta, brown rice and grains like barley and popcorn. Protein Most athletes need approximately 4 to 8 ounces of protein each day. Protein is important for recovery, repair of damaged tissue and aids in many of your body’s functions. The increased calories that athletes consume usually supply plenty of protein. Look for low-fat and lean protein sources. Cuts of meat with the words “round and “loin are lean protein sources, as are chicken, legumes, nuts, seeds and soy products like tofu. Fat Although it might not seem like it, fat is an important part of the diet. Fat supplies energy, helps cushion the shock of falls, is a storage place for certain vitamins, regulates body temperature and provides

Mono and polyunsaturated fats and omega-3 fatty acids have minimal effects on cholesterol and can be thought of as good fats. In fact, omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to increase HDL, which is the good cholesterol. Foods like walnuts, olives, avocados, salmon, herring, mackerel and plant oils like olive oil, canola oil, soybean oil, sunflower and safflower oil contain these good fats. Saturated fats from animal products and trans fats found in foods with hydrogenated oils should be avoided. Hydration for Athletes Staying hydrated is just as important as what you eat during training. Drink at least one cup of water for every 20 minutes you compete or work out. Green tea has powerful benefits to help repair broken capillaries and revive the body. Low-sugar sports drinks during or after competition are good for hydration. Typically, one sports drink is effective in replacing lost sodium, potassium and electrolytes. My recipe for Spicy Herbed Blue Cheese Steak is a delicious “performance or family meal that is easy to prepare. It’s great as a main course, or sliced and placed on top of a salad or in a wholewheat tortilla. (Additional information provided by Jessica Kovarik, R.D., L.D., Extension Associate, Nutrition and Exercise Physiology, University of Missouri Extension.)
BLUE CHEESE HERB AND PEPPER STEAK Blue Cheese topping: 3 tablespoons crumbled blue cheese (Roquefort, Stilton, Gorgonzola or Maytag) 1/4 cup baby spinach, raw and sliced into ribbons 1/4 cup sliced brown (baby bella) mushrooms, chopped finely 2 cloves garlic, chopped finely 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

When people mention Mexican Food, we immediately think enchiladas, tacos, burritos and tamales. Mexico has a very diverse food history. The food items mentioned above are actually a very small part of the food culture in Mexico. One must remember that France and Spain played a major role in the evolution of the Mexican culture and in their cuisine.

Steak: 2 teaspoons of black, red or pink peppercorns 1 (12 ounce) beef fillet, cut into four (3 ounce) steaks 1 teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon Italian Seasoning 1. Preheat oven to 375 F. In a small bowl, combine blue cheese, spinach, mushrooms, garlic, salt and nutmeg. Mix until ingredients are well-combined. Cover and refrigerate. 2. Spread the cracked peppercorns onto a piece of waxed paper or parchment paper. Fold the paper over the peppercorns. Press a cast-iron skillet or heavybottomed saute pan on the peppercorns, rocking the pan back and forth to crack them. Place the cracked peppercorns on a plate. Pat the meat dry on both sides with paper towels. Season with salt and Italian Seasoning. 3. Roll the steak in the peppercorns to coat on all sides. Place a cast-iron skillet or heavy-bottomed ovenproof saute pan over moderately high heat. Do not use nonstick cooking spray or any type of oil to prepare the pan.
4. Place the steaks into the hot, dry pan. Do not crowd the steaks so that they will sear, not steam. Sear the top and bottom of each steak, 1 to 2 minutes per side, without moving the meat. The meat will release easily once completely seared; any resistance and it’s not done yet. The steak should have a crispy, well-caramelized crust on the top and bottom.

YO-YO AND SPOT: CAR DEALER SCAMS
E
be shopping for another one, which is the whole idea of the scams: to take you out of the buying market. You’re allowed to drive the car away but, like a yo-yo and the string, you’ll be pulled back in and will be told you have to sign a new financing agreement -- one with higher interest. You might be threatened with fees for use of the car, or even police intervention for auto theft. The Federal Trade Commission did a study of those who’d had a car-buying experience in the previous 12 months.
ver heard of a yo-yo scam? How about a spot delivery scam? You could be caught up in these if you’re in the market for another vehicle.
The results:
Here’s how a spot delivery scam works: When you’re shopping for another vehicle, the deal is put together on the “spot” with a car already on a dealer’s lot. If you have less than excellent credit or a low income, the auto dealer will suggest you finance the vehicle through the dealership. You sign the papers, thinking all is well, accept the keys and drive off in your new wheels. At some point thereafter (days, weeks, months) you’ll be called back to the dealership after being told that the deal isn’t finalized.
• Victims of the yo-yo scam had a hard time getting back their down payment or even their trade-in vehicle.
The “deal” in question is the purchase of your contract from the dealership by a third party. This third party buyer might insist on more money down, or maybe having a co-signer. If no one purchases your contract to the dealer’s satisfaction, the dealer will cancel the contract with you.
• Buyers most likely to be targeted for the yo-yo scam are those with poor or no credit or with low income.
• A majority of consumers caught in a yo-yo scam caved in and signed a second contract for the same vehicle, at a higher rate of interest. Before you buy any vehicle, read about yo-yo scams on the Federal Trade Commission site (ftc.gov). Search for “Deal or No Deal: How Yo-Yo Scams Rig the Game against Car Buyers” and read all 17 pages. Be sure you know all the signs of these scams. David Uffington regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Send email to columnreply2@ gmail.com.
Meanwhile, in the yo-yo portion of the scam, you’ll have the car, and you won’t

LIVING GOD’S GIFTS bringing Christ into your financial life

...BRING CHRIST INTO OUR FINANCIAL LIVES
MAKING THAT 401(k) WORK
F
or many people, next to their home, their 401(k) is or will be their single largest financial asset. The employer-sponsored 401(k) is a wonderful tool for accumulating wealth. With its automatic payroll deduction, its tax deduction for contributions and its deferral of taxes on appreciation it is the ideal vehicle for assuring that money will be available in retirement -- but only if you use it effectively. Oftentimes I find an employee will contribute to a 401(k) without any purpose and hope for the best. Others will try to micromanage their portfolio, jumping from one investment to the next, in search of the greatest return. In the end neither ends up better off, and the cost, sadly, will not be paid until retirement. The decision to contribute to a 401(k), and the investment selection should be treated with the same care and consideration that you would make with any other investment. Is it consistent with your goals, your attitudes towards risk and what it is you want out of life?
Know Your Goal Before you invest in a 401(k) or change your investments, make sure you know what you’re trying to achieve. When I meet with a client for the first time to review their 401(k) I ask the question “what are you trying to do?” The answer invariably is to make money; oftentimes it’s to make as much money as possible. When I point that if your goal truly is to make as much money as possible, zero is a very real “possible,” and then there is usually a long pause. A better approach is to start with an end goal in mind. If you know what retirement looks like you can determine how much money it will take to support that lifestyle. From there you can determine how much of your current income you will need to set aside and what rate of return is necessary. With that information you can select investments to create a portfolio that supports your dreams. That is a plan for success.
Think Long-Term The financial markets will go up and down. That’s a fact of life. With the availability of instant information, on television, in the newspapers, at grocery store checkout lanes, on the Internet and at dinner seminars, it is easy to become trapped in short term thinking – allowing the news of the day to affect your long-term decisions. Many in 2008 and in the early months of 2009 saw their 401(k)s lose substantial value. As the markets declined too many set their goals aside and moved their investments to cash, locking in those incredible losses. Yet those who stayed with their goals not only saw their portfolios returned
to their original values but also saw significant gains on the dollars they continued to invest. Think long term. For each and every one of us, whether we are accumulating or we are taking income, retirement planning is a long-term proposition.
What Else Do You Own Far too often people will compartmentalize their investments assigning different values to different assets. Think of your 401(k) plan as part of a total retirement portfolio. No matter where your retirement dollars came from; inheritance, savings, IRAs, past employers, etc. coordinate them into a comprehensive retirement plan. For some assets it makes sense to have them in a taxdeferred account, like the 401(k), other investments offer advantages to owning them directly. Sadly, taxes can negatively affect our investment success. I am not a big fan of investing to avoid taxes; however, I am a big fan of using investment vehicles that can minimize taxation over the long-term. By taking advantage of current tax law you can greatly enhance the overall success of your retirement plan.

Seek Professional Help Retirement planning is not for the faint of heart. When you make the decision to leave the workforce the consequences of your choice will not be known until much later in life. I would encourage you to work with a professional who understands the income needs, tax concerns, as well as the risks that make for a successful retirement. There are a lot of advisors who are offering long-term solutions for short term concerns. They will often offer one product that solves all problems. As I’ve said before “there ain’t no such thing as a free lunch.” Make sure that the advisor you choose understands your long term needs and is able to help you develop a plan based upon your goals and dreams. And more importantly will be there for the long-term The 401(k) is a wonderful tool for the accumulation of wealth. When used well the 401(k) can be the core element of a successful retirement plan. I cannot encourage you enough to take advantage of the investment opportunities that a 401(k) offers. To maximize those benefits, however, I would remind you to start with the plan. Before starting any journey it is always good to know where you’re going.
