pples and oranges are great sources of vitamins and minerals. But they’re boring. Or so it would seem by the amount of new, hybrid foods humans have developed over the years. The motivation behind these hybrid foods can vary but the outcome is basically the same: the creation of a new food that cannot be found in nature. The vast majority of hybrid foods are fruits. So why would the creation of a new fruit, one that is made by intentionally combining two naturally-created fruits, possibly be seen as a negative? Isn’t a fruit . . . a fruit? Research has shown that there are drawbacks to messing with nature and Snippetz has the facts to keep you informed!

EVERYTHING IN MODERATION Now don’t let all this talk about hybrid foods keep you from eating fruits and vegetables. Even hybrid ones are better than none at all. The key is to eat them in moderation, just like everything else. Mixing hybrid foods with different types of fats like avocados, nuts, or olives can lessen the negative effects those hybrid foods have on your system. Eating more leafy greens can also help your body process these foods more easily. One more thing to remember: hybrid grains and legumes are fine to eat as long as they aren’t cooked. When eaten raw these foods are more easily digested and their nutrients can be drawn out for use by the body.

That in itself poses a problem because those minerals are essential to proper bone health. But the liver and pancreas can’t properly deal with this new sugar so instead of being processed and used in the correct manner, the excess minerals and hybrid sugar are simply dumped into the urine. Basically, eating too many hybrid fruits and vegetables causes you to lose essential minerals every time you use the restroom.

A hybrid food is created when two similar species of plant are cross-pollinated. Each plant has the ability to pollinate other plants as well as the ability to be pollinated itself. In cross-pollination, similar plants are used to pollinate each other, sometimes resulting in a completely new plant. This hybridization occurs naturally in the wild and sometimes leads to the creation of a new, superior “parent” plant; one that is stronger, heartier and more able to withstand the elements. However, there’s no guarantee that the newly-created plant will be better than its predecessors. The same goes for any foods created by humans rather than nature.

We all know the importance of fruits and vegetables to maintaining our health. And if they’re so important then wouldn’t it stand to reason that any improvement to these fruits and vegetables that would make them easier to eat would be a good thing, right? For example, seedless grapes. Such a wonderful idea . . . in theory that is. No more spitting out seeds or swallowing them as you attempt to enjoy your grapes. Nope. That’s been taken care of. But the problem with these new and improved fruits and vegetables is that they are missing vital nutrients. Often they are unnaturally high in sugar content, part of the reason why people enjoy them so much. They are also often missing the minerals that fruits found in nature contain. People begin to develop mineral deficiencies. In order to combat the increased sugar content of the hybrid

HYBRID VERSUS GMO

GMOs on the other hand, are foods that contain genetic material from another organism that they could never possibly contain in nature. For example, placing the genetic material from a strain of bacteria inside a kernel of corn. Not too appetizing, is it? And yet, this particular combination is an actual GMO experiment that has been tested. GMOs are being widely protested across the globe because the insertion of genetic material from chemicals has been used to create foods that are bigger than normal. But many companies don’t want to indicate what chemicals they are using. GMO labeling initiatives have begun in several states as a way to hold companies accountable for what they put into our food and increase the transparency of what we are eating.

fied organisms (in this instance, foods) are confused with one another. But they are certainly different and here’s why. Hybrid foods are those that are cross-pollinated as they possibly could be in nature. Take an apple tree and a grape vine. These are both plants and if the conditions were right, they could possibly pollinate each other and create a new type of plant, bearing a new type of fruit.

In China, the stem and tree of this fruit is considered lucky and thought to bring good fortune and prosperity. It also has some natural antiseptic properties. • Boysenberry – a boysenberry is a cross between a blackberry, loganberry and raspberry. It’s bigger than the berries from which it is derived. The antioxidant level of boysenberries is relatively high and can help reduce weight and lower cholesterol. • Ugli fruit – don’t judge this poor fruit by its name. This hybrid fruit, a cross between a grapefruit, an orange and a tangerine, is a great source of vitamin C, vitamin B and helps protect against kidney stone formation. Its appearance is a little strange with greenish-yellow thick wrinkly skin but the flesh of the ugli fruit is sweet. It grows to a size just a hair bigger than a grapefruit. • Pluot – the pluot is a cross between a plum and an apricot. It was developed fairly recently in 1990 by Floyd Zaiger. This fruit ranges in color from pink to red and is about the size of a plum. Pluots are much sweeter than either the plum or the apricot. There are nearly 25 different varieties of pluot available for purchase. • Grapefruit – that’s right. The grapefruit is actually a hybrid of the pummelo and the sweet orange. Interesting how a hybrid can go on to create another hybrid, right? Grapefruits are typically yellowish-orange

and the flesh inside is usually white, pink or red. This fruit provides a rich source of potassium, thiamin, vitamin A, vitamin B6 and fiber. It can supposedly help dissolve inorganic calcium.

A portion of proceeds supports the Military Artistic Healing Program. Art Work by the Wounded Warrior will be on display. $25 in advance and $30 at the door

Above was just a sampling of the hybrid fruits out there because there are just too many to list them all and their qualities so here’s a short list of some other common ones you’re likely to find in the grocery store: cantaloupe, watermelon, carrots, corn, cashews, oats and rice.

• Dannoli – a dannoli is a cross between a donut and a cannoli, brought to you by a company called Psycho Donuts in San Jose, Calif. It’s basically a tube-shaped donut that is fried and filled with pastry cream and chocolate chips. Then the whole shebang is rolled in crushed cannoli pieces. • Ramen Burger – this interesting hybrid food was created by Khizo Shimamoto at the Smorgasburg food festival in Brooklyn, NY. It’s a hamburger placed between two “buns” made of ramen noodles. The noodles are served in a dry disk that is lightly toasted on the outside and, thanks to a secret sauce, become slightly soft in the middle which diners have said gives it a bread-like texture.

are looking to improve your soil structure than organic mulch is best. It will break down over time and add nutrients to your soil. Either way whether organic or inorganic mulch is used there are many benefits to mulching before winter. It will greatly reduce evaporation and control soil temperature fluctuations from freezing and thawing, and protect shallow rooted plants from frost damage.

ooler weather is on the way and it won’t be long before our gardens are asleep for the winter and their roots are hibernating amongst frozen soil. So when should we mulch? Should we mulch before the soil freezes or after the soil freezes? How deep should we mulch? Is it best to use organic or inorganic mulch? Of course like most things it depends on what your goal is. Once you understand the different uses for each kind of mulch you can determine which kind is best for you.

All of your mulching options can be found in two categories. There are organic mulches like wood, straw, leaves, and grass clippings. Or there are inorganic mulches like gravel, fabric, or rock. If you’re looking for mulch that won’t blow away and have no reason to improve your soil, than using one or a combination of inorganic mulches might make the most sense. This is also a great choice if you’re looking to add mulch for aesthetic purposes as rock and gravel come in a wide variety of colors and sizes. If instead you

Often times it makes sense to use mulch from around our home like grass clippings, seed hulls, or leaves. These are not only a free option, but can be easily turned into the ground in the spring. When considering mulching options from around your home keep in mind that mulch should not compact easily and should allow for good air and water movement. When you’ve chosen your mulch then you can apply it at a depth of three to four inches. Remember that it is best to keep any kind of mulch at least six inches from the base of woody plants to help prevent rotting and/or rodent damage. Mulch can be applied anytime during the year. Just remember that if you apply the mulch earlier it will keep the soil warmer for longer and if you apply after the ground freezes it will help delay plants like bulbs from leafing out too early. There are many benefits to mulching. In fact it is almost a necessity for our plants to survive our windy and often dry winters. So be sure to tuck in your plants for the winter and know that they are protected for a long sleep.

he Palmer Lake Historical Society invites the public on Thursday, October 17, 2013, at 7:00 P.M. to the Palmer Lake Town Hall, 28 Valley Crescent, Palmer Lake, CO 80133, as Shaun Boyd provides an early start to the Halloween season by telling history-related ghost stories about several properties in Douglas County, with a little stretch into Denver and ending near Palmer Lake. Stories include several buildings in Castle Rock, the Highlands Ranch Mansion, a Parker ghost story or two and a phantom telegrapher. Hear about some unusual activities that occurred in the neighborhood, while you learn about the unique

history of the area. Shaun is a member of the Douglas County Library staff and enjoys researching the history of the area. In a 2011 presentation to Historical Society members, she provided an interesting and entertaining look at some of the fascinating women who contributed to the history and development of Douglas County. WHAT’S GOOD ABOUT GOOD CHOLESTEROL? DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have a yearly checkup with a number of blood tests. All has been well for a number of years, except for my HDL cholesterol. I am a 62-year-old woman, and my HDL has hovered around 39. I watch my diet carefully, exercise daily and have taken and am still taking niacin, but the HDL refuses to budge. My total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol are fine. What should I do? -- L.Y. ANSWER: HDL cholesterol is the so-called good cholesterol. It’s believed to remove cholesterol from the walls of arteries and take it to the liver for disposal. For women, HDL cholesterol ought to be 50 mg/dL (1.3 mmol/L) or higher. For men, the target is 40 (1.04) or higher. British researchers have punctured the HDL balloon. They say that HDL cholesterol doesn’t protect the heart and that its benefits have been greatly overblown. HDL is a complicated substance,

Including Allergy Injections

If you were my patient, I’d tell you to forget your HDL cholesterol. You’ve done everything you can to raise it, but it hasn’t budged. More importantly, your total cholesterol and bad cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, are at favorable levels. The main attention should be directed to these cholesterol components. If your doctor hasn’t said you need to be strict about HDL cholesterol, don’t pay so much attention to it.

The remarkable women composers featured in these concerts expressed themselves through music against all odds. Theirs are the golden threads woven through a complex past - women who found beautiful ways to be creative, to be innovative, to find their own genuine voice and to make music in extraordinary ways. What better way to unveil the mystery and expose the whole picture of women composers than by letting their unique voices speak through their music. For too long the world of classical music has missed out on the creative voice of half of the population. But not you! You want more from life. You want to fulfill your destiny. You want to be that someone special you know God has created you to be.

To Your Good Health Continued from Page 6

He sent me to an ear, nose and throat doctor. The first question he asked was what the humidity of our house was. It runs around 40 percent to 45 percent. He told me to get it up to 50 percent to 75 percent. We did, and my cough left in four days. It took three years and four doctors before I learned what was really wrong. I hope you can pass this along to the person with a chronic cough. -- R.G. ANSWER: A dry environment is not often thought of as a cause of cough. I’m happy the ENT doctor gave you and me the tip. The three major causes of a persistent cough are asthma, postnasal drip and gastroesophageal reflux disease (heartburn). R.G has alerted us to think of other possibilities. ***

YOU’RE SOMETHING SPECIAL

If you and I really are something special, why do we spend so much of our time slaving away just to eke out a living? Why are most people doing so little to fulfill their destiny? Two reasons:

By Dr. Ron Ross

ou were no accident. You’re not the descendent of an ape nor will you one day return to earth as a butterfly, a Billy goat, or a British Lord or Lady. You’re here at a specific time living in a specific place with a specific mission to accomplish. Your life has meaning – you are here for a reason.

Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

You already know this is true. Deep inside the depths of your soul you sense an eternal-ness, an awareness of destiny, a feeling that you really are somebody very unique in the 10,000 year history of humankind.

You are right, and modern science agrees with you! With the discovery of the complexity of DNA, scientists

First of all, most people don’t seek meaning in life. They are content to let life happen to them rather than take the effort to make something meaningful out of each day, week or month. Significance comes only to those who seek it. Second, most people are self-centered and interested only in satisfying their own personal wants and needs. That’s how they miss discovering their own personal usefulness. They want to be served rather than serve so they become takers rather than givers, spectators rather than participants, and end up living their lives as victims rather than victors.

So start today by demanding answers to life’s two greatest questions: “Who am I?” and “Why am I here?” Your answers to those questions are found deep within your own soul and in quiet, persistent reflection. Discovering your purpose is a very individual task worthy of every thought, prayer and effort you can give. Here are a few questions that will help you find the answers: What do you love? MOMENTS IN TIME THE HISTORY CHANNEL

• On Oct. 12, 1492, Italian explorer Christopher Columbus reaches the New World. Columbus, and most others, underestimated the world’s size. The expedition probably first landed at Watling Island in the Bahamas. Columbus later sighted Cuba, which he thought was mainland China. • On Oct. 10, 1845, The United States Naval Academy opens in Annapolis, Md., with 50 midshipmen students and seven professors. Known as the Naval School until 1850, the curriculum included mathematics and navigation, gunnery and steam, chemistry, English, natural philosophy and French. • On Oct. 8, 1871, flames spark in the Chicago barn of Patrick and Catherine O’Leary, igniting a two-day blaze that kills hundreds of people, destroys 17,450 buildings and leaves 100,000 homeless. Legend has it that the fire started when a cow kicked over a lantern in the O’Leary barn. • On Oct. 9, 1936, harnessing the power of the mighty Colorado River, the Hoover

Dam begins sending electricity over 266 miles of transmission lines to Los Angeles. The central reason for the dam, however, was the collection, preservation and distribution of water. • On Oct. 7, 1943, Rear Adm. Shigematsu Sakaibara, commander of the Japanese garrison on Wake Island, orders the execution of 96 American POWs, claiming they were trying to make radio contact with U.S. forces. The execution of those POWs remains one of the more brutal episodes of the war in the Pacific.

EVERY MEMBER HAS A VOICE. EVEN THE ONES WHO CAN’T YET SPEAK. As an electric co-op member, your household has a voice in how the co-op is run. Celebrate October as National Cooperative Month and learn more about the power of your co-op membership at www.mvea.coop.

• On Oct. 13, 1953, the world’s first art museum on wheels, the Artmobile, opens in Fredericksburg, Va., carrying 16 paintings by 15th- and 16th-century masters. Today, there are dozens of Artmobile-inspired museums on wheels in cities and towns across the United States and around the world. • On Oct. 11, 1975, “Saturday Night Live,â€? a topical comedy sketch show featuring Chevy Chase, John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Gilda Radner, Garrett Morris, Jane Curtin and Laraine Newman, makes its debut on NBC. It would go on to become the longest-running, highest-rated show on latenight television.

Nick-Snips

TURTLE POWER By Nick Yanez

I

recently had a memory from my time in preschool. It seems like another life now. I don’t even remember what house I lived in; what school I attended. I do recall, on about the third or fourth day of school, bringing my Ninja Turtle Action Figure to class. It’s one of my only memories from that pre-school. The reason I remember is because I really liked that toy. It would eventually lead to the ruin of the giant Barbie house the girls had set up in the middle of the playroom. Raphael invaded the home and ran out Barbie and her friends. For a moment there, the kingdom was ours. Then I realized I was playing with three girls and I had better save some face and go outside with the boys. I never claimed that Barbie Mansion again. Of course today, life looks so differently. Instead of racing away from girls, I’m married to one. Instead of playing with our toys and imagining worlds within a playground, my friends and I have to schedule out time to Skype and email each other from distant lands. It’s amazing what time does. Luckily, there’s always a piece of our past. I recently discovered that the Raphael action figure I once adored is up for the Hall of Fame! He’s with the rest of his gang; Donatello, Michelangelo, and Leonardo at his side. Every year new toys gets inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame. The hall is in Rochester, NY and was established in 1998. The induction class in 1998 included 11 toys. That was the beginning. Now, the National Toy people limit the number of yearly entries. Early classes included classics for all generations. Toys like Teddy Bear, Crayola Crayons, LEGO, and Frisbee littered the Hall in its inaugural year.

Even through the year 2000, the Hall still inducted up to 5 toys annually. Since, things have changed. For the last decade or so, with few exceptions, the Hall only inducts two new toys a year. The criteria however, is the same. The National Toy Hall of Fame has a mission statement of sorts - to recognize toys that have engaged and delighted multiple generations, inspiring them to learn, create, and discover through play. That’s a tall order. Best of all though, it’s up to the people to decide the nominees. The Toy Hall has a website (www.ToyHallOfFame.org). On that site, citizens are free to fill out the nomination form throughout the year. Come induction time, the people upstairs will tally the votes and select the most popular nominations. The candidates this year are some tough cookies. Their fate will be decided on, as it is every year, by a panel of historians and educators. It’s going to be a sprint to the finish. We have timeless classics like Magic Eight Ball, Little Green Army Men, Bubbles, and Nerf Guns. There are also a couple of Board Games nominated in Chess and Clue. Then there are the underdogs – Fisher-Price Little People, Pac-Man, The Rubber Duck, The Scooter, and of course my beloved Ninja Turtle Action Figures. What’s your favorite toy in the bunch? Are you rooting for any childhood favorites to make it into the National Toy Hall? I know I’m pulling for my little green action figures, even if I know they reside in the “underdog” category. But honestly, we need this. I mean, it’s been 15 years now since Barbie was inducted. She couldn’t even defend her own turf against one of the Turtles, much less the whole clan! We’ll have to wait and see. This month, a chosen panel will select two winners from the bunch to be officially inducted on November 7th. Good luck Raphael, and goodbye old friend.

HIGH-TECH RELIEF FOR WINTER BLUES

M

any of us don’t want to do too much outdoors during cold weather, but there are plenty of ways to stay busy. Hightech devices can come to the rescue! Here are a few ideas: • Learn a foreign language online. Check OpenCulture.com and look for courses developed by Yale or Carnegie Mellon. Look at www. bbc.co.uk/languages/ if you want to brush up on a language you already know. This one is very well done with videos. Do the lessons with a friend. • Learn how a new electronic gadget works. There are many to choose from. I’m surprised, as are those who know me, but I’m enjoying my Kindle, an e-reader. I’m a diehard book

lover, but I’m running out of space for more shelves. The Kindle holds thousands of books, is easy to carry, the text is expandable to huge sizes if necessary, the battery lasts a long time, and on Amazon.com there are lots of free books to get started. To enjoy books on an electronic device, it doesn’t need to be a Kindle. Amazon has free apps (little software applications) for a number of e-reader devices, such as iPad and Android tablets. Check your local library, too, for free book lending on your e-reader. It might even have devices you can check out and sample. • If you have a Roku that streams programs to your television, you might have missed the hundreds of free channels available. Look in the channel store for Pub-D-Hub for vintage commercials, movies, cartoons and more. Check the Lecture Kings channel for course seminars from Yale University and Missouri State, as well as audio books of the classics. Sit in on recorded seminars on the MIT Open Courseware channel. Once you get started, you might even decide to try other high-tech toys! Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Write to her in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 328536475, or send e-mail to columnreply@gmail. com. (c) 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

BUILDING A PET FIRST-AID KIT DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read in a guide to cutting dogs’ toenails that “styptic will stop bleeding if you cut their paws. What is that, and where do I get it? -- Perry in Dallas

OUR READERS DO!

DEAR PERRY: Styptic powder can be used on small nicks and tiny cuts to stop bleeding and reduce pain. That’s helpful when trimming pets’ toenails, which can be a traumatic experience for them, especially if you should trim a little too far up the nail and accidentally cut the quick. The powder is applied with a cotton ball or soft cloth. Most owners keep it right next to them as they trim their pets’ nails, so it can be applied immediately. In fact, styptic powder should be an

In addition to the powder, a pet firstaid kit should have gauze and tape, a small bar of soap, a disinfectant like hydrogen peroxide or alcohol wipes, Benadryl (plain, with no ibuprofen or acetaminophen), cotton balls and disinfecting hand wash (for you). Its main purpose is to treat small cuts and scrapes, but you can add other items that you think are essential, including the veterinarian’s phone number, extra identification tags, copies of your pet’s shot records and a spare leash. More ideas can be found at the Humane Society of the United States’ website.

HOORAY FOR VEGGIE DAY

W

orld Vegetarian Day is celebrated each year on Oct. 1. It is the first day of Vegetarian Awareness Month, which ends on Nov. 1 with World Vegan Day. The month-long celebration was established by the North American Vegetarian Society in 1977. Vegetarians are people who abstain from eating all animal flesh, including meat, poultry, fish and other sea animals. An ovo-vegetarian includes eggs, a lactovegetarian includes dairy products, and an ovo-lacto vegetarian includes both eggs and dairy products. A total vegetarian (vegan) consumes no animal products at all. Vegetarians have existed throughout history and come from a wide range of cultures and backgrounds. People adopt a vegetarian diet for a variety of reasons, including concerns about personal health, animals and the environment. Some people also may be drawn to vegetarianism because of religious and spiritual beliefs or economic considerations. Getting enough protein on a vegetarian diet is easy as long as you eat a varied diet of unrefined foods that include enough calories to meet your energy needs. When caloric intake is adequate, protein deficiency is virtually nonexistent. This is because protein is so abundant in the food supply. The foundation of a vegetarian diet -- beans, grains, vegetables, nuts and seeds -- are all rich in protein. Amino acids, the building blocks of protein, are found in all plant foods, including the nine essential amino acids humans must obtain from food. Concentrated sources of plant protein include peas, beans, lentils, soy products (tofu,

13

In general, it costs less to buy plant protein than the equivalent amount of animal protein. Beans and grains are among the least-expensive foods available and form the basis of most traditional diets around the world. If you want to ease your way into a vegetarian lifestyle, try my recipe for Spicy Kale with Parmesan Pasta. Kale consumption is at an all-time high these days because it creates a hardy and healthy dish. Soyrizo is a soy-based meat alternative similar in taste to Mexican soft chorizo sausage. The soyrizo and spices transform this simple pasta dish into a palate-pleaser for vegetarians and nonvegetarians alike. (Additional information provided by the North American Vegetarian Society.)

SPICY KALE AND PARMESAN PASTA 1 pound kale, well-washed, tough stems removed, leaves thinly sliced 1 pound spaghetti 8-ounces vegetarian soyrizo sausage, casing removed 2 tablespoons Italian seasoning 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes 3/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil 6 cloves garlic, finely chopped 1 (14.5 ounce) can diced, Italian-style tomatoes with juice 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg or cloves 2 tablespoons grated lemon zest (from about 4 lemons) 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 3 ounces Parmesan cheese, shaved or freshly grated 1. Bring a large pot of water to a boil over high heat. Heavily salt the water to flavor the kale and the pasta, using about 1/4 cup salt. Add the kale to the boiling, salted water and cook for about 5 minutes, Continued on Page 15

Drain the kale in a colander and transfer it to a bowl. 2. Return the water to a boil. Add the spaghetti and cook, stirring often to ensure it doesn’t stick together, for about 8 minutes, or until tender but still firm to the bite. Drain the spaghetti. 3. Heat a skillet over medium heat, then add the soyrizo sausage, casings removed, 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning and the red pepper flakes, and cook, breaking up the sausage with the side of a spoon, for about 3 to 5 minutes, or until warm. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the sausage to a plate. 4. Add 1/2 cup of the olive oil and the garlic to the skillet, scraping up the browned bits in the pan, and cook for about 30 seconds. Add in the tomatoes and the juice, and the nutmeg or cloves.

This law was unused and nearly forgotten for centuries. Then, in 1817, a man named Abraham Thornton was charged with murder in the death of a young woman named Mary Ashford. The evidence against Thornton was nearly overwhelming, but he claimed the right to trial by battle against his accuser. Since the law was still on the books, the court decided

it had no choice but to grant his request. Thornton’s accuser was William Ashford, the victim’s brother, but since he declined to appear on the field of battle, Thornton was freed. WINTER EMERGENCY KIT

N

o matter where you live, your area can be subject to harsh weather during the winter. Whether it’s snow and ice, tornadoes, intense storms or flooding, it’s a good idea to have an emergency kit on hand. If nothing else, being prepared for a long-term power outage can make the experience easier. A three-to-seven-day emergency kit can include: FOOD Keep your emergency foods separate from your kitchen supply to be sure it’s available when you need it. Make a list of what you have and keep track of expiration dates. When necessary, rotate those foods into your household food and replace the emergency stash. Buy only what you know your family will eat. An emergency is not the time to try new or exotic foods. Lean toward healthy, not junk food, as the body needs good nutrition in stressful situations. Consider keeping on hand peanut butter, crackers, soups, pet food, canned meats, canned vegetables, canned juices, baby food, powdered or nonperishable milk, cereals, canned tuna, freeze-dried camp food (watch the sodium), vitamins and unsalted nuts.

OTHER GEAR Emergency supplies don’t have to be expensive, especially if you watch for sales and buy only a few things at a time. --Batteries --Plastic utensils --A manual can opener --A flashlight for each person (look for hand crank if possible) --A hand-crank radio with NOAA weather channel (look for one that also charges cell phones) --A small camp stove with a propane cartridge and refill (use outside only) or propane grill --Emergency thermal blanket -- these are inexpensive (only a few dollars) and can help retain up to 90 percent of a person’s body heat --A first-aid kit with bandages, iodine, antibacterial ointment and more --Moist towelettes --Toilet paper You’ll need 1 gallon of water per person per day. Buy gallon jugs and store them in a cool environment, perhaps at the back of the closet. Beware the online survival and preparedness sites that sell pre-packaged freezedried foods. Many of them contain very high levels of sodium and only a few hundred calories per serving. There are some good ones, but you have to do your homework. For more information on building your emergency stash, go online to www.ready. gov and click on Build a Kit. Also see redcross.org and scroll down to Prepare Your Home and Family. SOLICITING CUSTOMERS BY TELEPHONE: A TRAP FOR THE UNWARY © Nov, 2010 by Lisa Welch Stevens, Attorney at Law P.C.

f you are a new small business, or a small business that, while not new, is seeking out new customers, you may be tempted to “cold call” potential customers. You may also be tempted to save some money by making the cold calls yourself, and by formulating or obtaining your own list of prospects to call. By doing so, be wary of falling afoul of the Colorado No Call Act. Even before the federal government put in place its own No Call Law, the Colorado State Legislature approved the Colorado No Call law. Basically, the law bars any business or person from making telephone solicitation calls to residential or wireless telephone numbers that have been listed on the Colorado No Call List. In addition, the No Call law requires any business or person who makes telephone calls to any type of telephone number for solicitation purposes to first be registered with the State as a telephone solicitor. So, there are two big risks to the business seeking to drum up business through cold calls, made by themselves, and/or made to telephone numbers that have not been vetted against the Colorado No Call list. First, if you are not registered with the State to make such calls, you violate the No Call law with each and every telephone solicitation call you place. For each violation you face statutory damages, and attorney’s fees and costs. Second, if you happen to make telephone solicitation calls to residential or wireless numbers, you violate the No Call law with each and every call you place to such numbers. For each violation you face statutory damages, and attorney’s fees and costs. The fact that you did not

bringing Christ into your financial life

Why might this be a problem? Well, you would be surprised at how many businesses’ telephone numbers are actually classified as residential or wireless numbers. For example, if a business is based out of the owner’s home, its telephone number will be a residential number, even if it has an expansion line or number used only for business. This is because under Colorado state regulations, if the telephone line goes to a physical location with sleeping and kitchen facilities, its number(s) must be classified as residential telephone number(s). While one can get a market expansion line or number for a residential line to use for a business, it will still be classified as residential number. And, of course, many business owners, particularly those in the skilled trades who work in the field most of the time, use wireless numbers only for their business.

You may, in all innocence, obtain a list of “business” numbers from many sources (including from third parties such as Dun and Bradstreet or from professional organizations or advertisements), and many of those numbers may in fact be “residential” or “wireless” numbers which you are prohibited from cold calling under the Colorado No Call law. Both the Colorado State Supreme Court and the Colorado Court of Appeals have interpreted the No Call statute as protecting telephone numbers based upon their classification as residential or wireless; the actual use to which those numbers are put is legally irrelevant. What is a business owner to do? If you want to make telephone solicitations to obtain new clients, either don’t “cold call” , or hire a third party registered telephone solicitor to make calls for you, or register with the State and vet your list against the No Call list (both federal and state) or obtain a vetted list from a third party.
