t’s a tough world out there. Competition is a fact of life and there really is no way to escape it. So instead of trying to avoid competing or backing down when faced with a challenge of that sort why not hit it head-on and groom yourself to be a great competitor? Parents who introduce their children to the world of beauty pageantry at a young age often use that as their reasoning behind their decision. Maybe they have the right idea. Maybe there’s more to beauty pageants than meets the eye. Could it be possible that beauty pageants can give a person a leg up by teaching them how to compete, both in their appearance and their intelligence? Snippetz decided to take a look to see what’s really behind these pageants . . . and to uncover some events that prove these seemingly perfect people are just like us ordinary folks!

1938, a talent portion was added, requiring each contestant to show some skill or another. By 1945, the idea that a scholarship should be awarded to the winner, probably in an attempt to appeal to the more intellectual women who might choose to participate, came to fruition and Bess Myerson received the first one. Myerson was Miss New York when she entered the contest and came away as Miss America and with a $5000 scholarship.

Beauty Pageants... Continued from Page 1

Sophia Style by Nancy Rower .... 5

The modern tradition of beauty pageants traces its history back to 1921 in Atlantic City,N.J. In an attempt to beef up tourism past the typical Labor Day summer cut-off point, hotel owners in the area decided to hold a pageant. Included in the pageantry was a “National Beauty Tournament” that declared it was going to find “the most beautiful bathing beauty in America.”

Three years later, Slaughter made another bold move and proclaimed that winners would no longer be crowned in their bathing suits but rather in evening gowns. Apparently, this didn’t sit well with the media or the American public who bemoaned the idea but Slaughter stuck to her guns and from that year on, all winners wore their formal gowns at their crowning.

Eight brave women chose to participate in the competition but only one, Margaret Gorman who was the holder of the Miss Washington D.C. title, would walk away the winner. Herb Test, a local reporter, said that he would pronounce the winner to be “Miss America.” Little did he know that his made-up title would become the major pageant it is today.

The Miss World pageant was spawned from the Miss America pageant in 1951 and boasted the slogan “Beauty with a Purpose.” The slogan remains today and to add credence to the phrase, the pageant is linked with many charities worldwide. This aspect helped develop pageants into what they are today, which is a competition not only about beauty but also about brains, finance, business and (obviously) show business.

The Miss America pageant became an annual event in Atlantic City after that first “bathing beauty” search and by 1923, participation had grown to 70 contestants. During 1929, 1930 and 1931, the pageant was put on hold because of the Great Depression but was started up again in 1932, although it was not the grand spectacle it had been previously. By 1935, the pageant, and in fact the whole nation, had fallen for the idea that was Hollywood. Glamour, fame and money were at the forefront of many peoples’ minds, including the women who competed for the Miss America title. Lenora Slaughter took over directorship of the pageant and helped coordinate Hollywood screen tests for the winners of the subsequent pageants. Film producers flocked to the contests in search of the next big movie star.

Industry experts also claim that the process of learning how to speak in front of large crowds, how to exhibit poise and grace, how to be interviewed and answer questions off the cuff is a valuable experience. No doubt, learning how to interview properly can be a big advantage in the business world but it’s unlikely you’d come across some of the Miss America interview questions at an actual job interview.

DO BEAUTY PAGEANTS REALLY BENEFIT THE CHILDREN WHO PARTICIPATE? The first child beauty pageant, “Little Miss America” was held in 1961 in New Jersey. Since then, there has been a marked increase in the amount of beauty pageants held just for these little beauty queens in the making.

actually judging during the pageant, there are many in the industry that support the claim that the more involved a contestant is in philanthropic endeavors, the better her chances of winning are. Many contestants have their hand in several different charities, whether it is for the good feeling they get from helping out a cause or for their own strategic planning on how to snag the crown is really anyone’s guess.

Beauty Pageants... from Page 2 called “Toddlers and Tiaras,” produced by TLC. If so, you might be skeptical about how a beauty pageant geared towards very young girls, sometimes not even able to walk yet, could possibly be for their benefit. Well, many parents of pageant contestants swear that it has helped their child overcome stage fright or shyness. Others boast that it has helped their child develop better communication skills. Still others claim that it has taught their child how to be a gracious winner and a good loser. After seeing the show, those claims might seem less than reliable but parents continue to spend thousands of dollars to have their child participate. There has to be something good coming from it, right?

FUNNY PAGEANT NAMES While some people take pageants extremely seriously, there exists a lighter side to these competitions. Here are a few of the more interesting pageants out there. • Miss Rural Electrification • Miss Snake Charmer • Miss Landmine • Miss Beautiful Morals • Miss Zombie NYC • Miss Smoked Meat • Miss Mosquito Legs • Mr. and Miss Scratch Ankle

What would a story about beauty pageants be if we didn’t at least touch on some of the more humorous incidents at these events? It would be awful, that’s what. So here are a few that will hopefully bring a smile to your face. • Two contestants in the 1958 Miss America pageant made an interesting revelation while chatting backstage during the event. They found out they were both dating the same military cadet. Girlfriend number one, Miss Iowa announced, “I think he has two very lovely ex-girlfriends,” to which girlfriend number two, Miss California said, “She said it very well.” • California, Florida and New York hold the most pageants each year and every year, that total number is on a rising trend, regardless of the fact that national pageants can cost up to $800 to enter. • The “Miss World,” “Miss Earth,” “Miss Universe,” and “Miss International” pageants are considered the “Big Four” of beauty pageants. Does it seem redundant to anyone else that three of the four are basically different words for the same thing?

Americans can’t located the United States on a map. Lauren Caitlin Upton answered (and this is a direct quote), “I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because some people out there in our nation don’t have maps and uh, I believe that our, uh, education like such as, uh, in South Africa, and uh, the Iraq, everywhere like such as, and I believe that

• One of the most incoherent interview answers ever given by a contestant was Miss Teen South Carolina’s answer to why she thinks one-fifth of

they should, uhhh, our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S., uh, should help South Africa, it should help the Iraq and the Asian countries so we will be able to build up our future, for us.” Oh dear. Perhaps Miss Teen South Carolina should have spent more time brushing up on her interviewing skills.

his time of year not everyone’s thoughts are on gardening. Well, actually our thoughts always are, but that’s just an occupational hazard! For everyone else you may still be planting bulbs and doing fall clean up, but gardening probably isn’t on the forefront of your mind like it often is in the spring and summer. What might be on your mind however, at least when you walk outside, is just how beautiful our fall landscape is. The deep oranges, reds, purple and gold blend and pop. Even the greens and blues look deeper and more vibrant. So even though you may not be in full blown planting mode right now, later in the spring when you are, you might ask; what was that deep red tree I saw all over town in the fall? Or what was that incredible purple or vibrant orange that paired so well with that Blue Spruce? I actually prefer planting in the fall, but the selection is usually better in the spring. Either way it might be worth doing a little homework now to find out the names of the ones you want in your own yard. After all as Albert Camus put it “autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower.”

the leaves green. After the production of chlorophyll slows then other pigments already in the leaves become visible. That is how we get these awesome transformations of color. One way you might find out what that tree, shrub or perennial is that you just can’t stop marveling at is to take a leaf that has already fallen to have it identified. Or if it’s on someone else’s property ask if you can pick one and maybe the owner could tell you themselves what it is. You could also go into some local nurseries and see what they have that’s turning colors right now. Then you have the name right there on the tag for you. Another option would be the good old internet. A potential problem with this option is you may fall in love with a beautiful tree just to find out it doesn’t grow here! No reason to be disappointed though! Obviously Colorado trees can hold their own when it comes to fall color. Some popular choices that you might be seeing right now include the Autumn Blaze Maple, this one and varieties closely related are often the brilliant eye catching red we see around town. Another is the Autumn Purple Ash; this tree becomes a mixture of everything from orange-red to purple. This one is my personal favorite. And the intense gold we see might be one of many varieties of Green Ash or, of course, our beloved Aspen. As far as shrubs go I’m often asked about Burning Bush, its name kind of gives the color away! Personally I am very fond of the glossy orange-red that Aronia turns this time of year. The list of course goes on and on but I think I will be running out of room soon! So take this as a great excuse to take an even deeper look at the beautiful trees and shrubs that already catch your eye when you drive by. Then by next year they can catch your eye in your own yard.

Custom made jewelry by Purple Mountain and Santa Fe Trails adorned the outfits make each look truly unique. We are already looking forward to the Spring 2014 Show in the Tri-Lakes area!! The Top 10 list of things every woman should own. Five this week and five next week. Now I’m not going to write the obvious like a little black dress and a strand of pearls. Your mother probably told you this decades ago. An upscale sweatsuit or sweatsuit alternative. You need something to throw on when taking the dog out or running to the convenience store. Upscale workout attire is still offlimits for going out to dinner or other social events. This is something to be comfortable yet doesn’t look like you just rolled out of bed or finished washing the car. Think of stretch pants (not stretched out pants) of a nice fabric and design. Top it off with a cardigan or a nice T-shirt. Even a comfortable pair of jeans works here too. Remember, comfortable does not mean bedraggled or sloppy. It means effortless and easy to wear. Denim. The basic denim wardrobe needs to have two fabulous pairs of jeans. One is darker and sleeker for dressing up and the other can be of any shade that is used for running around. Fit is never more important than when wearing jeans. Of course everyone wants to avoid the high-

waisted Mom jeans of the 70s, but everyone also wants to avoid low-rise jeans that make you look like a JiffyPop bag from the 70s as well. Add a denim jacket. The jacket can be any color and design but it is a useful staple. I have a pink, white, tan and gold coated jean jacket. They work in a multiple of everyday and casual environments and climates and always great to have nearby. You don’t have to invest a lot of money in denim. This is one place where the highest price doesn’t correlate to the best fabric. In many cases, the higher priced denims are brand-name only.

A great handbag. This is where you need to invest your money that you saved on your denim. A high quality and elegantly constructed handbag will take you from casual to elegant, day to evening, work to soccer practice. Go with high quality black leather with either no or minimal embellishments, grommets, etchings, designs etc. This is your one staple that can make or break how put together you look. Above all…. Just say NO to the “IT” Bag. The “IT” bag goes out of style quickly and is often rather garish in design and embellishments. “IT” is about as far away from practical and classy as you can get. I will admit that sometimes nice to have something fun and frivolous around. If you have the urge for a fleeting relationship with a handbag, it is best to rent one at Bag Borrow and Steal. You won’t be entering into any long term commitment and the frivolity won’t disappoint your checking account for long.

Boots. Particularly in Colorado. Two pairs – One dressy and one casual. Again follow the rules of the great handbag and think of this as investment pieces and go for styles that can work with many outfits. The more embellished and over-designed they are, the less use you will get out of them. BLOOD PRESSURE READINGS CAN VARY DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My question is about taking blood pressure readings. I am 87 years old, female, about 5 feet, 5 inches tall and weigh about 130 pounds. When I go for a checkup with my general practitioner, the nurse takes my blood pressure before I see the doctor. The cuff feels comfortable, and the reading is always in the normal range. I have had my blood pressure checked at other places (clinics, etc.) and usually the cuff is inflated very tight (so tight that it hurts) and the reading is very high. If the cuff is inflated too tightly, could it cause a high reading? -- I.S. ANSWER: High blood pressure is one of the most common medical conditions, and correct treatment of blood pressure is essential in order to reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke. It is not uncommon for blood pressure to vary from day to day, or even during a single day, but the changes you describe suggest two possibilities.

Nasal Allergies Chronic Sinusitis Food Allergy Hives Eczema Asthma

The first is that the reading at your own doctor’s office is right, and the other places are wrong, which is probably the most likely. Having blood pressure tested in a new place or by someone you don’t know certainly can cause the reading to be elevated. Automated blood pressure cuffs in pharmacies, etc., are sometimes right but often are wrong -- occasionally spectacularly. A very high pressure in the cuff, high enough to cause pain, can cause the blood pressure to go up, but not usually high enough to put people into the hypertensive range.

Another possibility is that the nurse in your doctor’s office isn’t inflating the cuff high enough to get the correct reading, or deflating the cuff too quickly. The wrong-size cuff can lead to large errors in blood pressure readings. While all of these are possible, a trained nurse who takes blood pressure readings every day is not likely to make errors consistently. You can ask your doctor to double-check the nurse’s reading.

The remarkable women composers featured in these concerts expressed themselves through music against all odds. Theirs are the golden threads woven through a complex past - women who found beautiful ways to be creative, to be innovative, to find their own genuine voice and to make music in extraordinary ways. What better way to unveil the mystery and expose the whole picture of women composers than by letting their unique voices speak through their music. For too long the world of classical music has missed out on the creative voice of half of the population. Theirs is the missing piece in a musical opus that is finally being heard. www.trioparadis.com

ANSWER: I’m not sure. It might be aquagenic pruritus. “Pruritus” is the medical word for itchiness. Pretreatment with an antihistamine before showering can sometimes prevent the itching. Take it about an hour before you shower. Tiny hives also break out on the skin. They may be so tiny you can’t see them, or they may be in places where you can’t see them. I don’t know if I’m correct. Aquagenic pruritus is so rare that I never expected to hear anyone complain of it. Get this confirmed by a dermatologist.

adventure. It would be helpful, I suppose, if when you were born, you came with a spec sheet that made it clear exactly what you were designed to do. Because you’re not, it means you must go on your own personal gifts and talents discovery tour. You do that when you examine a variety of possibilities: you try this and experiment with that, you find out what is easy and what is difficult for you to do, and you learn what you feel passionately about and what you don’t.

YOU HAVE UNIQUE GIFTS AND TALENTS

T

By Dr. Ron Ross

he specific combination of natural gifts and talents that you have are absolutely unique to you. No one on earth has had or ever will have the same mix of abilities, interests, and passions. It is this mix that makes you something special.

This discovery part is very important and is why your parents made you take piano lessons, or dance classes, or pushed you to join a softball team. They wanted you to try a variety of things not knowing which one you would become good at or interested in. But the discovery part shouldn’t end upon graduation from high school or even college. It goes on for a lifetime because as you age the things you can and cannot do and the things which interest you change.

Too many people go through life without taking a close look at the variety of gifts and talents they possess and so live life at about 10%. If you want to live life at a much more meaningful rate, you must discover, develop, and use the special gifts and talents God has given you.

Once you discover some of your interesting gifts and talents you must make it a priority to develop them to the full-

Discovering your gifts and talents is an

Discovering and developing your gifts and talents is a life-long process. There should be no end to your discovery of the variety of things life has to offer. For instance, after September 11, 2001 my father became interested in the teachings of Islam. In his 80’s he researched and wrote a rather exhaustive comparative analysis of Islam and Christianity. Discovering your gifts and talents is an adventure, developing them is a priority, but using your gifts and talents is a joy. It’s fun and easy to do things you’re really good at. It’s not work when you’re working on things about which you have great passion and possess excellent skills. You were designed to live life with meaning and purpose and when you do, your usefulness is your mission and joy is your reward. • On Oct. 17, 1906, Wilhelm Voigt, a German shoemaker, impersonates an army officer and leads an entire squad of soldiers to help him steal 4,000 marks. Voigt humiliated the German army by exploiting their blind obedience to authority and getting them to assist in his audacious robbery. • On Oct. 15, 1917, Mata Hari is executed for espionage by a French firing squad. Her military trial was riddled with bias and circumstantial evidence, and it is probable that French authorities trumped her up as “the greatest woman spy of the centuryâ€? as a distraction for the huge losses the French army was suffering. • On Oct. 14, 1947, U.S. Air Force Capt. Chuck Yeager becomes the first person to fly faster than the speed of sound. Yeager’s X-1 rocket plane was lifted to an altitude of 25,000 feet by a B-29 aircraft and then released through the bomb bay. • On Oct. 16, 1958, Chevrolet begins to sell the El Camino, a combination sedanpickup truck. In 1964, the company in-

troduced a version built on the brawnier Chevelle platform. Today, the car is a cult classic. • On Oct. 20, 1962, the White House press corps is told that President John F. Kennedy has a cold; in reality, he is holding secret meetings with advisers on the eve of ordering a blockade of Cuba. Kennedy had seen photographic proof that the Soviets were building ballistic missile sites on the island of Cuba.

• On Oct. 18, 1974, soul singer Al Green is attacked in his own bathtub when an exgirlfriend pours a pot of scalding-hot grits on his back. Her actions left Green with severe injuries but also shaken emotionally and spiritually. By 1976, Green had become an ordained Baptist minister and purchased a Memphis church, where he still preaches today. • On Oct. 19, 1982, maverick automobile executive John DeLorean is arrested in a Los Angeles motel with a briefcase containing $24 million worth of cocaine. According to authorities, DeLorean was attempting to make a drug deal in order to rescue his financially ailing DeLorean Motor Company.

SHARK ATTACK!

McBride was proving a point. He says, “It just shows you how bad a rep sharks get. They’re just like any other fish” in a quote from CNN. The message is simple. McBride says that if you pay no attention to sharks, they’ll pay none to you. In the same quote, he goes on to tell, “Galapagos sharks, they’re not big mammal eaters. It would take them probably hours to get the courage up to attack you if you were adrift at sea”. It would be nice to get two, maybe three hours. But McBride had a point. Perhaps we fear sharks because of the media hype and cinematic portrayal of sharks.

By Nick Yanez

T

he Godfather Trilogy is one of the most important and recognized film series in American cinema history. Most people have seen the movies. They coined several memorable quotes like, “I’m gonna make him an offer he can’t refuse”, “Keep your friends close and your enemies closer”, and “Revenge is a gift that taste best when served cold”. These are quotes and phrases I’ve heard all my life. Some of them, I never knew were being quoted from a movie until I saw it. Anyway, there’s this scene in the first movie where the Corleone family receives a message by the Sicilians. It’s a fish wrapped in Luca Brasi’s bulletproof vest. Then, a character named Sal says, “It’s a Sicilian message. It means Lucas Brasi sleeps with the fishes”. How many times have you heard that quote (sarcastically, hopefully) as a metaphor? It’s always been the go-to expression for threatening someone’s life. Again, sarcastically I hope. That’s how legendary of a quote it is. Most people don’t even know that it came from the movie. It’s one of those phrases that’s always been there – sleep with the fishes. However, it took a man by the name of Brett McBride to take the quote literally; proving a point along the way.

SUMMER SPECIAL! Take Care of Yourself in 2013...

The 46-year old McBride is a shark wrangler and the captain of the science vessel Ocearch. He recently swam to the bottom of the ocean during an actual shark feeding frenzy. In fact, there were 500 sharks in total, within the area he swam. Then, like any shark wrestler would, he dozed off; fell asleep, for a whole minute. I’m sure a minute seems much longer when resting among hundreds of flesh eating sharks. But that didn’t bother McBride. No, he literally

In reality, there are only about 4 fatal shark attacks a year. That’s out of the entire world; think about that. It’s extremely rare. In fact most shark attacks are non-fatal. Despite popular belief, sharks do not attack humans for feeding purposes. It usually has to do with feeling threatened. The usual method of attack for the animal, is to “hit-andrun”. They bite, then bail. Meaning most attack victims are survivors. Not to mention there are over 400 species of shark. Only 3 of the 400-plus species are responsible for shark attacks (with a couple exceptions). Your odds of encountering one of the dangerous species are slim to none. So why do we fear sharks so much? Who knows? It’s been a long time in the making. But the expert McBride says that fear can only lead to potential trouble. “When I’m in the water and see a shark, I can keep my fear completely under control, which helps me because they feel your heartbeat, your sweat”. So there you have it. From the man who sleeps with the fishes himself. You cannot succumb to what you do not fear – you can quote me on that.

Take some time to research the plans to make sure you get what you need.

MEDICARE ADVANTAGE

M

ore seniors are choosing the higher quality Medicare Advantage plans, according to a news release by Health and Human Services Department. Now, for the fourth year, that number is expected to increase. The average monthly premium is expected to go up just $1.64, which will bring it to $32.60 a month, with more than 99 percent of beneficiaries having access to a plan. Medicare Advantage plans often (but not always) include Part D prescription plans, as well as expanded health coverage that the original Medicare doesn’t cover. The Part D prescription-drug plan will be approximately $31 for the fourth year in a row. Open enrollment starts Oct. 15 and closes Dec. 7 for health and drug plans. Plans change from year to year, and so do individual needs.

If you need help picking out a plan, call 1-800-633-4227 for more information. Or you can go online and compare plans at www.cms.gov (click on Medicare) or at www.medicare. gov (click Sign Up/Change Plans). Remember: If you already have Medicare, you do not need to enroll in Obamacare. (Hang up on the scammers who call.) *** On Another Note: Have you had your flu shot this year? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, flu season could start as early as October. There are differences in vaccines this year. There are “trivalent” vaccines with three vaccines, “quadrivalent” vaccines with four types and a high-dose trivalent for seniors age 65 and older. Ask your doctor which you should have. There won’t be nearly as many doses of the quadrivalent vaccine available. The CDC website explains the differences in these vaccines, but doesn’t explain why there are two types this year. HERO DOGS GET NAMES IN LIGHTS

T

he American Kennel Club and the American Humane Association both recently honored dogs that are heroes in our community.

OUR READERS DO!

The American Humane Association held a vote for America’s top “hero dog from a finalist list of eight inspiring dogs like Cassidy, who lost a leg after being hit by a car and now, with his owner, advocates for specialneeds dogs; and CWD Carlos, an explosive detection dog who served in Iraq and Afghanistan but was sadly neglected following his retirement

12

And the American Kennel Club honored five working dogs with its Award for Canine Excellence (ACE). They include Bart, a former hunting dog who’s now a companion dog for wounded veterans; Drago, a therapy dog called into action in Newtown, Conn.; Tuesday, an assistance dog; Zeke, a K9 wounded in action; and Jesse, a search-and-rescue dog who returned to work after an injury. The five ACE awardees will receive silver medallions, presented at this year’s AKC/Eukanueba National Championship in Orlando, Fla., this December. They’ll also receive $1,000 to be awarded to a charity of their (owner’s) choice. Tell me about your inspiring pet! Send your questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. Did you know mosquitos can transmit heartworm larvae to dogs, but fleas don’t? Find out more in my new book, “Fighting Fleas, available now. (c) 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

ome fruits and vegetables are easier to come by in the summer months, but there is still a good variety available in the fall and winter. It’s important to include fruits and vegetables in your diet year-round to stay healthy and ward off diseases. Here are some of the superstar fruits and vegetables of the fall and winter months. Sweet potatoes: They’re loaded with betacarotene (which the body makes into vitamin A), vitamin C, potassium, fiber, iron and vitamin B6. Sweet potatoes have more nutrients than regular white potatoes and can replace white potatoes in some recipes. Try them mashed, baked or as a dessert. Apples: Apples are a traditional fall favorite and are easy to find in the supermarket, or you can pick your own at a nearby orchard. They are a quick, easy snack and can be paired with peanut butter or cheese for protein. Apples contain antioxidants, which may help protect against certain cancers and reduce levels of LDL, or bad cholesterol. Apples have vitamin C, vitamin K and fiber. Remember the old saying, “an apple a day keeps the doctor away. Broccoli: This is one vegetable that can be eaten raw or cooked, hot or cold, by itself or with other foods. Broccoli can help prevent cancer and heart disease, and boost the immune system. Nutrients in broccoli include vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin B-6, iron, calcium, magnesium and vitamin E. Pumpkin: Pumpkin is a great source of potassium and beta carotene, a powerful antioxidant that is good for the eyes. Canned or prepared fresh, pumpkin can be made into a variety of soups, baked goods and desserts. Kiwi: This fruit can be eaten alone (after peeling) or can be added to many different dishes, including soups, salads and des-

13

Avocado: Avocados contain healthy monounsaturated fat. Even healthy fat is a dense source of energy, so it’s important to eat avocados in moderation. They also contain vitamin E, fiber, potassium, folate and vitamin C. Avocados can be used on sandwiches or salads, or made into guacamole. Spinach: Dark-green veggies contain a variety of nutrients a healthy body needs. Spinach is packed with vitamin A, vitamin K, iron, folate, magnesium, vitamin C, calcium, potassium, fiber and vitamin E. Spinach also has antioxidants and anticancer agents. Frozen or fresh spinach can be added to just about any meal. Try using it on pizza or lasagna or use it instead of lettuce in a salad. Pears: They are a good source of fiber, antioxidants and vitamin C. Research suggests that regularly eating pears and other fruits may guard against macular degeneration. Pears seldom cause allergies and are usually safe for infants and small children. Green beans: Green beans are high in vitamin K, which protects red blood cells and helps reduce the severity of asthma, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. They also contain vitamin C, potassium, folate, iron and magnesium. Green beans can be served as a side dish or used in salads, soups or casseroles. My recipe for Lebanese-Style Green Beans uses this superstar fall vegetable in an interesting and delicious new way! (Additional information courtesy of Melissa Bess, Nutrition and Health Education Specialist, Camden County, University of Missouri Extension.)

LEBANESESTYLE GREEN BEANS There’s a wonderful, thick Lebanese strained yogurt called Labenah that is used in everything from pasta to vegetables. I’ve substituted Greek yogurt and spices to create a creamy, rich dressing that’s perfect for green beans or as a sauce with cooked pasta. Frozen or canned green beans also will work just fine. Just strain off any liqContinued on Page 15

• It was Albert Einstein who made the following sage observation: “There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.” • Many people believe that one should never remove one’s wedding ring. However, one superstition holds that doing so is perfectly acceptable -- as long as the ring is being used to ward off a witch. • There’s nothing surprising about the fact that upon the death of British novelist, poet and essayist D.H. Lawrence, the author’s body was cremated. What is unusual is that, at Lawrence’s request, his ashes were mixed into the plaster used to build the D.H. Lawrence Ranch in Questa, N.M. • As Halloween approaches, if you live in

New Jersey, Pennsylvania or Iowa, you might want to keep in mind your state’s tax policy. If you’re buying a pumpkin to carve into a jack-o’-lantern, you’ll need to pay tax on the gourd. Pumpkins used for food purposes, however, are subject to no such tax. • In 2009, a Saudi couple who had spent their honeymoon in Malaysia encountered difficulty on the return flight home. It seems that the groom felt the bride was taking too long in the airport restroom, so he boarded the flight back to Saudi Arabia before she did. When he allowed the plane to leave without her, she insisted on an immediate divorce. • The next time you’ve enjoyed a happy hour out with friends, you might want to consider the virtually unknown adjective “gambrinous,” which means “to be content and happy due to a stomach full of beer.” *** Thought for the Day: “My advice to you is to get married. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A bid for you to step in and take over an incomplete project could prove to be an excellent learning experience that you can take with you when a new opportunity opens up. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It’s a good time for socializing, both with family and with friends. Your aspects also favor developing new relationships, any or all of which might become especially meaningful. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your success in handling a recent difficult situation prompts a request to handle another workplace problem. But this is one you should accept only if you get all of the relevant facts. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) New information about a past decision raises some unsettling questions from an old friend. Be prepared to explain

your actions fully and, if necessary, to make adjustments.

and maybe more than a little unpredictable this weekend.

LEO (July 23 to August 22) This is not a good time to share personal secrets, even with someone you’ve known for a long while. What you don’t reveal now won’t come back to haunt you later.

CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Although you don’t think of yourself as a role model, your ability to make a tough decision at this time sets an example for others, who admire your courage.

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Pushing yourself to meet a project deadline is admirable. But be careful not to leave out important details in your rush to complete your work and send it off. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Watch that you don’t take on more than you can handle when offering to help someone with a personal problem. There might be hidden factors you weren’t told about. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) That major move you’ve been considering could come sooner than you expected. Make sure you’ll be ready with the facts you need when decision time arrives. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Languishing relationships can benefit from a break in routine. Get out of the rut and do something new

AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) You need to move any remaining obstacles out of your way before you can take on a new challenge. Seek advice from close, trusted friends and associates. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A career change appears increasingly likely to happen during the next several weeks. It’s a good idea to start now to prepare, so you can be ready to make the move when the time comes. SCAM ALERT TRIFECTA “Mystery shopper opportunities” are making a resurgence in email boxes. Yes, there are legitimate companies. If you’ve been working for one for a long time and are happy with them, feel free to continue. But if you want to get started now, don’t. Wading through the myriad offers and trying to decide which are on the level is asking for trouble. When you sign up, you’re likely to be asked for your name, address, email address and bank-account information for “instant” receipt of your pay via wire transfer. That’s too much information for a company you don’t know. You may be asked to pay a fee to sign up as well, or for “certification.” Barring that, chances are that the only “shopping” you’ll be asked to do will involve receiving checks in the mail with instructions to take out your fee and send them the balance of the money by MoneyGram. The check will end up being no good, and you’ll be out the money you wired to them. If someone offers to pay a ridiculous amount of money to a stranger for a minimal amount of work, think: scam.

SNIPPETZ ONLINE

One inventive scam offers to pay people money to put advertising signs on their car and drive around. Amounts offered are up to $1,000 in advance and then $500 per week to drive around with a vinyl sign stuck to your car. You don’t have to answer any questions, such as about the number of miles you drive, or where you drive. A legitimate advertiser would want to know where his ads will be seen. Your payment will be in the form of a check, which you are instructed to cash, take out your fee, and send the balance by Western Union back to the company. Do you see a pattern here? Another scam can reach us right where we live: our homes. Security systems for the homes are designed to make us feel safer. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has investigated numerous complaints involving high-pressure sales tactics, shoddy merchandise and more. The warning signs: Someone (likely part of a roving team) comes to your door in a cold call, impersonating a representative of the monitoring company you already use. You’re told your old system is deficient in some way, and that the new equipment itself is free if you’ll sign a contract. Check the FTC site at ftc.gov for more details on how to protect yourself. LIVING GOD’S GIFTS bringing Christ into your financial life

...BRING CHRIST INTO OUR FINANCIAL LIVES

OBAMACARE – A PRIMER

T

he Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act – Obamacare has been getting a lot of press coverage lately. There are reports of people unable to access websites designed specifically to help navigate the Act. Over 800,000 people have been furloughed and the government effectively shut down over issues relating to the funding of Obamacare. Our President openly has refused to compromise. To say the situation is a mess would be an understatement, but it is the law of the land and its ramifications will affect almost every one of us. According to a Wall Street Journal poll nearly 70% of respondents said they grasped only parts of the Affordable Care Act. Here are a few basics you need to know.

A PLACE TO START The Affordable Care Act mandates that all Americans have some form of health care coverage by the start of the new year. If you have an employer sponsored health plan that you are happy with or are covered by Medicare you can stop here. You’re covered. For the rest of us we have from now until March 31, 2014 to enroll in a health insurance plan which includes “essential health benefits” as defined in the act. There are a number of qualified health plans being offered through exchanges established by the state of Colorado as well as the federal government. A good place to start is at www.healthcare. gov. After answering a few questions the site will direct you to health plans available in your area. You may also want to visit www.coloradohealthinsuranceexchange.us for a listing of all health insurance plans available in Colorado. Though one of the goals of the 900 plus page law was to make coverage fairer and easier to understand, plan on spending a fair amount of time at each of these sites. There’s a lot there and a lot to navigate.

WHAT ABOUT SUBSIDIES? A basic tenet of the Affordable Care Act is that all Americans will have health insurance available to them. For those who have an income less than 138% of the poverty level (about $33,000 for a family of four) they will be eligible for expanded Medicaid coverage, either through state or federal government, or through subsidized coverage. To find out more about what subsidies are available go to the Kaiser Family Foundation website (www.kkf.org) and run your situation through their subsidy calculator.

DON’T FORGET TO COMPARE There are four broad categories of plans – bronze, silver, gold and platinum. As you would expect bronze is the least costly of the plans covering about 60% of your healthcare expenses. The most expensive is platinum, covering 90%. The deductibles, copayments and coinsurance, as well as the price, will vary by the individual plans. So don’t forget to compare not just the cost but also the benefits. If you like your medical providers, you will want to make sure they are part of the plan’s preferred provider network.

THE HAMMER If you fail to sign up and don’t have health insurance, under Obamacare, you will be fined $95 or 1% of your annual income whichever is higher. There are exemptions for some life-changing events, like divorce or loss of a job, but everyone is expected to comply. If you skip it, the IRS will deduct any monies owed from your tax refund and bill you for the balance. Keep ignoring it and the fines, the penalties, and interest will continue to compound. Like it or not, it appears that for now the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is here to stay. Obamacare may very well turn out to be the most far-reaching overhaul of healthcare in our lifetime. It does require your action. With that said, it may make sense to wait a bit until the dust settles down, but it is not a law to be ignored. Now’s the time to get yourself educated and be proactive.

Lisa Welch Stevens Attorney at Law, P.C.

“Folly is joy to the senseless man, but the man of understanding goes the straight way.” Proverbs 15:21

HOW MUCH WILL IT COST? It is estimated that a mid-level plan under Obamacare is about $338 per month, but that is just an estimate. Your actual cost will be based upon a number of variables including your age, your income, where you live, and whether or not you’re a smoker. Fortunately pre-existing conditions cannot exclude you from coverage or increase the cost. Your lifestyle however will impact the cost. A smoker can expect to pay 50% more than a non-smoker for the same exact plan.
