“The thing I find really scary about ghosts and demons is that you don’t really know what they are or where they are. They’re not very well understood. You don’t know what they want from you. So it’s the kind of thing you don’t even know how to defend yourself against. Anything that’s unknown and mysterious is very scary.” – Oren Peli, Israeli producer
I
t’s that time of year again, when the young and old alike yearn to be scared out of their wits. Okay, maybe not. But many people are looking for a good fright and we at Snippetz felt it was our duty to research some local scare-worthy places. We’re not talking your mom-and-pop haunted house set up in your neighbor’s garage. No, we’re talking about REAL haunted houses; ones that don’t require any staging or actors or fake monsters and zombies to frighten those in attendance.

Not everyone believes in ghosts; that’s obvious. But one study showed that about one third of all adult Americans do. Another study found that about 23 percent of those adults polled believed they had had a personal experience with a ghost, either having seen or felt one. With such a high number of people being “believers,” it’s no wonder that the Association for the Scientific Study of Anomalous Phenomena was formed. And according to the association, there are a few things to look for when trying to determine if a house truly is haunted.
Colorado Springs Office Bob Blum 719-337-0435
The following year, the family purchased the home and according to Beth Lee, all the problems started shortly thereafter. Lights in the house turned on by themselves or would flash on and off; they could hear what sounded like people stomping across the roof and chains rattling. The family has reported strange shadows and weird lights, and the stench of an unidentifiable chemical that was so strong it burned their throats. The family set up surveillance cameras to catch the action on tape, especially after their alarm system and motion detectors were triggered with no explanation. The El Paso County Sheriff’s office investigated those alarms over 60 times and came up with no evidence of
The ASSAP would likely dub your house haunted if you have seen apparitions, feel cold spots in a room, smell any unusual odor, notice any objects have been moved or damaged, or have seen your pet acting agitated or scared.

The origin of the paranormal activity is unknown and there are plenty who say that the previous owner of the house knew all about the strange happenings and kept his mouth shut. Maybe he didn’t want the sale to fall through; maybe he didn’t want to be labeled a wacko. Either way, Steve and Beth Lee signed a lease on the home in May of 1991 and moved with their two boys to the house without knowledge of what they were getting into.

be just an ordinary house, what lurks inside is far from ordinary.

At least two paranormal investigators have made their way to the house to help determine what exactly is going on at the Lee house. One came to the conclusion that at least 20 different spirits resided in the house, specifically in one of the upstairs bedrooms. Another conclusion came from a Hopi shaman that visited and decided that the house resided on an area known as a “Rainbow Vortex,” a place where our mortal world connects to the next world, whatever that may be. Hundreds of faces have revealed themselves in the master bedroom mirror which has been labeled as the pathway through which these spirits have been able to move.
HEARTHSTONE INN The Hearthstone Inn, located on Cascade Avenue in Colorado Springs is actually two separate houses, the Bemis house and the Sumner House that were connected in the early 1900s. was open continues. So what was this paranormal activity? Some guests had reported seeing pictures and mirrors lift themselves off the wall and either fly across the room or drop to the floor. Others claimed that drinking glasses had suddenly shattered in their hands. Cold spots had been reported and some believers had even gone as far as to set up cameras to record the orbs and mists that mysteriously appeared throughout the inn. Perhaps the most interesting occurrences at this haunted house were the repeated reports of the ghost of a little girl running throughout the inn. People claimed to hear her giggling and laughing. Some had even said that she was jumping on the bed they were sleeping in as though it was a trampoline.
The Pioneer Museum, situated in the heart of downtown Colorado Springs, seems an unlikely place for a haunting. But people swear that the ghost of a former manager who was shot by an employee in the 1950s still roams the halls of the museum. According to the stories about the museum, the manager was accused of cheating that employee out of a paycheck and the employee lost his mind and killed the manager. His former office and surrounding areas are said to be haunted by an upset presence. This presence is reported to make people feel really uncomfortable, like they are not welcome to be there.

Luxury often comes to mind when you think of this particular hotel in Colorado Springs. Haunted usually doesn’t . . . but maybe it should.
• Blickling Hall in Norforlk, England
People who have worked at the hotel have come forward with claims that they’ve seen the apparition of a woman wearing a long gown. Others have indicated that ghosts were behind suspicious behavior that occurred during a remodel of the hotel in which each wing was closed off, one at a time in order to complete the renovations.

COMPOSTING YARD WASTE
Rose Hall in Jamaica
C
omposting yard waste can be a very practical thing to do. After all it recycles nutrients back into your yard and compost is important for good soil structure. Not only is it a tremendous space saver it is also a money saver! You’ll save money not having it hauled away and you’ll save money not having to buy as much compost and mulch later in the year. Often the biggest thing that keeps people from composting is that they simply don’t know how. Composting is easy if you follow a few basic rules.
• The Deane House in Alberta, Canada • The Villisca Ax Murder House in Iowa • The Monte Cristo Homestead in Australia • The Lalaurie House in New Orleans
To create a successful compost pile you want to alternate layers of dried plant material with layers of green plant material. Layers 6 – 8” deep will help your compost pile reach the right amount of nitrogen. Microbes break down the plant material and they need nitrogen to feed on. If green plant material is scarce then an application of blood meal or other fertilizer high in nitrogen is necessary. The microbes also need steady amounts of moisture or they can dry up and die so after every few layers water your pile and keep it lightly moist throughout the year. Keeping your pile too moist, on the other hand, will deprive your
4
To effectively kill most plant diseases your compost pile needs to reach a temperature of 122 degrees and for the microbes to continue their hard work it’s ideal for temperatures to be between 70 and 140 degrees. This is obviously achieved much faster in the summer months. Don’t worry it’s not necessary to drag our compost pile into the living room in the winter to keep it warm; it will just take a bit longer to produce nice compost. Readily composted materials include leaves, straw, green parts from flowers and vegetables, and small amounts of twigs, weeds and grass clippings. Be careful though not to add too much plant material treated with weed killer as this will lengthen the time it will take to break down. Many people also choose to compost kitchen wastes like egg shells, coffee grounds and vegetable scraps, but for some people this can present a problem with bears or raccoons. It is not advised to compost meat, bones or dairy products. For those who would like to compost livestock manure keep in mind the potential hazard of E. coli on food gardens. If you intend to use composted manure for a food garden than a 2 to 4 month curing period after its composted is recommended. After 1 to 2 months in the summer and a bit longer in the cooler months you will have a compost pile that has shrunk considerably and has a wonderful earthy smell! A mix your gardens and your wallet will surely appreciate!

countries. Today, we are talking about 2%. Declining transportations costs, increased trade agreements and porous global markets shifted the manufacturing from the US to a global market. In short, it is simply cheaper. According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, consumer spending on clothing as a percentage of household income is nearly half of what it was in 1960. And ironically we have more clothing in our closets.
F
ashion is supposed to make us feel and look better. The reality is that there is an underside of the fashion industry is that just isn’t very pretty. On 24 April 2013, Rana Plaza, an eightstory commercial building, collapsed in the capital of Bangladesh leaving a death toll of 1,129 and another 2,515 seriously injured. It is considered to be the deadliest garment-factory accident in history, as well as the deadliest accidental structural failure in modern human history. This trails behind recent garment factory catastrophes in the Pakastani cities of Karachi and Lahor where industrial factory fires killed 257 and seriously injured more than 600. In all three catastrophes, children were working illegally and among the dead and injured. And, in all three catastrophes, building codes and safety codes were nonexistent. These are the ramifications of cheap clothing. The average consumer is not aware of the connection between low prices and dangerous conditions for workers and children. The globalization of the garment industry made it possible for us to buy cheap fashion where the true price is paid by those working in the factories and the impact to the environment in underdeveloped countries. The fashion industry, in order to maintain a competitive edge, has migrated to Bangladesh and Pakistan where cost of labor is cheap and there are no human rights or environmental standards. While we know of the aforementioned tragedies, there are many factories that continue to operate in substandard conditions. In the 1960s, the majority of clothing was made in the US and Europe. It was well made with good textiles and fabrics and meant to last. By 1990, about 50% of garments are manufactured in developed

Our concept of fashion has also changed over these decades. The vernacular is reflective of these changes. We don’t talk in terms of style and style icons like Sophia Lauren, Coco Chanel, Jackie Kennedy Onassis and Audrey Hepburn. These women were elegant with timeless looks. They wore excellent quality garments and real jewelry. We talk in terms of trends like colors, embellishments, flowers, glitter, fringes where the trend changes from one season to the next. The style is gone and we are caught in a fashion industry fueled cycle of trends where you need to buy, buy, buy. In order for the market to sustain this cycle it needs to be cheap, cheap, cheap. It’s impossible to have style when you are on a frenzy of cheap, fast fashion. Fortunately, there is a push in the fashion industry to get away from dangerous industrial standards as seen by the Bangladeshi and Pakistani factories. So how does one shop responsibly? If you really want to know, check out Panjiva. Panjiva is an internet based company that provides detailed information on over 40,000 apparel and textile manufacturers in over 140 countries, as well as a ratings system that measures everything from efficiency to ethical codes. And seek out boutique owners who are professionals in their industry and we carefully select our lines for style, quality and ethical manufacturing. hirsuitism is the result. It might be the only sign of male hormone production, or there may be other signs of hormone excess.
DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I watch a lot of TV news. Without naming names, there are two very attractive women reporters, dark-haired, who have prominent mustaches. I find this distracting. Is unwanted hair removal so very painful or costly that they would not have it done? We have a niece with the same problem, but I would never mention it to her. What’s going on? -- D.B. ANSWER: Many women have hair growing in places usually reserved only for men -- the mustache area, the chin, the chest, the upper back and the arms. It’s called hirsuitism (HER-suetizm), and it’s not uncommon. About 5 percent of women in the childbearing years have it, and more women develop it after menopause. It has to do with the balance between male and female hormones. Women make male hormones. Some make slightly more than normal, and other women might have hair follicles that are more sensitive to male hormones than they should be. In either case,

For many, this is nothing more than a family trait. For others, it can be a sign of trouble in the adrenal gland, the thyroid gland, the pituitary gland or the ovaries. One somewhat-common condition that produces such an imbalance is polycystic ovary syndrome.

Not every woman with mustache growth needs an exhaustive investigation, but women should mention it to their doctor to see if the doctor thinks further pursuit is in order.

A number of options are open to women who want the hair removed. Shaving and bleaching the hair are two cheap ones. Vaniqa cream -- relatively new -- can be effective. Electrolysis and laser treatments destroy the hair follicles. Electrolysis is somewhat painful, but not so greatly painful that it’s unbearable. Women reporters can afford either procedure. Male hormone excess can be treated with a number of medicines, and that can rid women of unwanted hair.

Jaundice indicates liver trouble. When the liver is functioning normally, it clears the blood of bilirubin, a byproduct of worn-out red blood cells. If the liver’s not up to par, bilirubin levels in the blood rise, and that turns the skin and whites of the eyes yellow. Your neighbor’s doctor has the task of finding the cause of jaundice. Only if the cause is identified can the liver be properly treated. ***
In the late afternoon she noticed a large spider dashing between the rafters of our unfinished cement-block house that had a roof but no ceiling. As daylight quickly vanished, she tried to reach the spider to kill it, but it hid in the shadows between the rafters and the roof.
but he didn’t die of cirrhosis. Why? -L.C. ANSWER: Not every alcoholic develops cirrhosis, which is scarring of the liver. Your dad might have had a genetic endowment that protected his liver.
After sunset she lit a candle, prepared our two children for bed, and read them several bedtime stories until they nodded off to sleep, while being very much aware of her unwelcome guest hiding somewhere above her.
*** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

fast asleep. Relieved, she returned to the bedroom and set down her candle on the small table at the side of the bed. Before blowing out the candle she glanced nervously around the dimly lit room and breathed a silent prayer for the soon arrival of two things: courage and daylight. She knew there was a large ugly spider somewhere in her house and there was nothing she could do to find it or kill it or chase it off. So she blew out her candle, laid her head down on the pillow, and soon, in the remote darkness of the African night, she went to sleep. That’s courage. Someone once said, “Courage is fear that has said its prayers.”* You do not know what kind of courage you have deep within your soul until you face a situation that calls it forth. I believe most of us have far more courage than we may have exhibited to date. Sure you’ve seen yourself fail the courage test from time to time. You have kept silent when you should have spoken up, or you succumbed to peer-pressure when you should have walked away, or you ran and hid when you should have stood and fought. But do not let your present fears or your past failures determine the level of courage you are really capable of displaying. You’re something special. You too can face with courage the saucer-sized spiders of your own daily life. *Dorothy Bernard

• On Oct. 31, 1517, the priest and scholar Martin Luther nails to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany, a piece of paper containing 95 revolutionary opinions that would begin the Protestant Reformation. In one, Luther condemned the corruption of the Catholic Church for asking for payment for the forgiveness of sins. • On Oct. 30, 1890, Oakland, Calif., enacts a law against opium, morphine and cocaine. The new regulations allowed only doctors to prescribe these drugs, which had been legal for cures or pain relief.

• On Nov. 1, 1952, the United States detonates the world’s first thermonuclear weapon, the hydrogen bomb, on Eniwetok atoll in the Pacific. The Soviet Union quickly followed suit, and by the late 1970s, seven nations had constructed hydrogen bombs.

In the aftermath of Black Tuesday, America and the rest of the industrialized world spiraled downward into the Great Depression. ONE NIGHT STAND By Nick Yanez
I
t has come again; the one day when nobody expects you to be yourself. Instead of being Jerry ‘the office guy’, you can be a Vampire, a Zombie, or a Pirate. You can talk with a different voice and walk with flamboyant posture and nobody will think twice about it. It’s a time when being yourself is frowned upon. It’s Halloween; the fun-filled Thursday packed with parties and free candy. To most people, Halloween is an abnormal day; it’s a change of pace. Different costumes and characters are born annually, only to wither away in the memories of friends and family. For one night only, most American’s will seek to have the sexiest, coolest, or funniest costume. Then there are a few folks out there in world who feel that Halloween is one of the rare days that makes sense to them – it makes them normal.
SUMMER SPECIAL!
I’m talking about the subculture known as “Furries”. They are a small group of people who want to live life as an animal. So, instead of wearing jeans and a T-shirt, these people generally prefer to wear animal ears, tails, and paws, in an attempt to live life as that creature. They even change their name sometimes.
Take Care of Yourself in 2013...
Get a Massage EVERY DAY!
First identified in the 1920’s, Furries seem to be popping up more and more in modern society. In fact, if you research it online, you’ll find most cities have social groups or weekly meeting for Furries; think Bowling or Movie Nights once a week. It’s a time when they are able to gather with people who don’t judge them or frown upon their way of life.

I recently stumbled upon an article about
one of the more extreme Furry enthusiasts out there. His name is Gary Mathews, or as he would prefer - Boomer the Dog. The 47-year old former IT Technician (he is now unemployed) Gary, I mean Boomer, wears a collar with his full body dog suite every day. He even walks around on all fours and eats food out of a bowl, when he can. Named after the short lived NBC series Here’s Boomer, a show about a friendly hound who helped people in need, Boomer the Dog is trying to pull off what no human has before – legally becoming a canine. Of course his recent attempt to legally change his name to Boomer the Dog was denied by a state judge. The reason was stated that he could ultimately “put the public welfare at risk” with the change. An example given was this – if he were to witness a car accident and call it in to 911 under the name Boomer the Dog, the operator could think it was a child’s prank, and not respond. Fair enough. “I really wish they do figure out (how to turn humans into dogs) so I can do that!” Gary said in an interview with The Huffington Post. What do you make of all this? A person trying to live as an animal is certainly taboo. Is it unhealthy? I think most people agree that in moderation, anything is acceptable. Take Halloween. For just those couple of hours every year, we’re fine with people wanting to be somebody else. They can be an evil monster or a friendly kitten for just that evening; a one night stand. But the next day, we expect them to put away the costume and stop the charade. The next day, it’s time to go back to work and be a regular functioning member of society. There are those who refuse to meet that quota. They choose to stand up and be different – something that’s known to be celebrated in our country from time to time. I say, if the Furries want to live their life as something different, so be it. Let them become a dog, cat, panther, or parrot. Just keep them away from my children.

A
lthough we often think of pumpkins in terms of pie or Halloween decorations, pumpkins and pumpkin plants are more versatile than most people think. Pumpkin greens can be cooked and eaten like spinach or collard greens. Seeds can be roasted plain, salted or with flavorings added. Pumpkin flowers also are edible. The flesh of the pumpkin can be used in a variety of cooked dishes as a good source of vitamins K and A, magnesium, fiber and potassium. Vitamin A helps maintain eye health, potassium helps maintain healthy blood pressure, and vitamin K and magnesium work together with calcium and vitamin D to build and maintain strong bones. Pumpkins also provide vitamin C, folic acid, pantothenic acid and copper. When choosing a pumpkin for eating, select varieties bred for flavor, known as pie or sweet pumpkins. These usually are smaller, sweeter and have more pulp than the types used for jack-o-lanterns. However, the larger, more watery decorative pumpkins also can be eaten. When using a pumpkin for both decoration and food, keep it safe to eat by drawing on it with non-toxic paint or markers instead of carving it. Pumpkin can be canned, frozen or dried for later use. Can pumpkin in chunks -- pureed pumpkin is too thick to can safely, and no research-based recipe or procedure has been developed.
To freeze, select fullcolored mature pumpkins with fine texture. Wash, cut into cookingsize sections and remove seeds. Cook until soft in boiling water, steam, pressure cooker, oven or microwave. Small pumpkins can be pierced and baked whole on a tray in an oven or microwaved until soft. To cool, place pan containing the pumpkin in cold water and stir occasionally. Then remove the pulp from the rind and mash. Package the pumpkin in sealable containers or bags, label and freeze until you’re ready to use it. Baby Bear pumpkins grow to a smaller size. The flesh is good to eat and the shell is convenient to use as a soup bowl. The seeds are partially hulled and are good to use as a snack when roasted. Hooligan pumpkins are quite small but make excellent soup bowls with their flesh carved out. Jack-beLittle pumpkins are palm-size and can last for months out of the sunlight before cooking them into your soup. Sugar pumpkins are generally smaller and have a higher flesh-to-seed-cavity ratio. They are less stringy and more flavorful than most carving pumpkins. For a festive fall touch, serve my recipe for Pumpkin Chowder in a hollowedout pumpkin shell “soup bowl or a hollowed-out Artesian bread bowl. Keep the pumpkin top or bread bowl top as a “lid to keep the soup warm.
PUMPKIN CHOWDER 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 2 leeks, trimmed of tough green tops and chopped, or 1 large yellow onion, chopped 3 large garlic cloves, finely chopped 2 medium bell peppers, chopped 2 1/4 pounds pumpkin, peeled, seeded and cut into 1/2- by 1-inch-think pieces 1 1/2 teaspoons chopped fresh majoram or oregano 1/4 teaspoons crushed red pepper 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg 2 bay leaves 1/4 teaspoons salt Continued on Page 15

Interestingly, the unbearded drummer’s name is Frank Beard.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT AMADA SENIOR CARE
A
mada Senior Care was started in Orange County California in 1996. We opened an Amada office here in Monument in 2012. We provide service to our Clients in Colorado Springs, Denver and Pueblo. At Amada we excel at making simple, everyday tasks something special. We specialize in making the perfect match with the client and the caregiver. Amada caregivers not only take care of daily essentials like cooking and cleaning, they also go above and beyond to find out what makes our clients smile. Recently, one of our caregivers discovered that her client had spent his whole life farming – so she purchased some seeds before her visit and planted a garden for them to tend together. Amada is as much about connecting and caring for seniors as we are about performing the required daily routines. Of course Amada caregivers are trained to provide assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs) like: • Bathing • Dressing • Meal preparation/feeding • Medication reminders • Walking/ambulating/exercise assistance • Light housekeeping • Errands/shopping • Toileting • Most non-medical assistance
Amada offers Assisted Living Placement Services Assisted living communities are designed to provide help for residents with basic ADLs. Some states also allow assisted living to offer medication assistance and/or reminders. Unlike nursing homes, assisted living communities do not offer complex medical services. Every senior has unique care needs and preferences. Amada is able to help families who are looking for assisted living communities to narrow down their options based on care needs, budget, location, and the type of living environment preferred. Amada can advise families on how to pay for assisted living and in home care through our expertise and experience in long term care insurance, veterans’ programs, and other non-traditional payment options. Amada’s senior housing and assisted living services are free to our clients. By offering care giving and placement services, we are able to help seniors find the living arrangement that suits them best. Amada has relationships with hundreds of local senior care communities and specializes in referring to the following types of facilities: • Assisted living facilities • Large and small facilities • Independent living facilities • Board and care homes • Adult family homes • Senior care homes • Skilled nursing facilities • Alzheimer/dementia facilities At Amada we understand that caring for relatives can be rewarding but also stress-
es, such as yearly fees for vehicles. Calculate how much you need to set aside each month to meet that expense.
ful, time consuming and emotionally exhausting. It is difficult for families to juggle work, children and other obligations and still find time to properly care for an aging parent. Amada takes care of the caregiving so you can become just a son or daughter again. Amada Senior Care is committed to enriching lives by providing nurturing, compassionate non-medical in home care and by guiding families through the many senior housing options available for assisted living and care homes . Healthcare professionals and families look to Amada to help them navigate the complexities of the senior care system. Amada Senior Care is looking for GREAT caregivers that are up to the challenge of meeting our high standards of care. What do we look for in our caregivers? We call it our 5 Cs of being a great caregiver.
Communication • Amada caregivers speak clearly, listen well, and are experts at non-verbal communication through facial expressions, gesture, eye contact, positive body language and touch.
Compassion • Amada caregivers feel it is their calling in life to be a caregiver, not just a job. • Our caregivers show genuine kindness and concern for others and look to fulfill our clients’ emotional as well as physical needs.
Confidence • Our caregivers have confidence in their own skills and training. • They have confidence in the strength, support and efficiency of Amada. • They greet you with a firm handshake and have the confidence to calmly yet kindly deal with even the most reluctant client.
ARE YOU SPENDING MORE THAN YOU MAKE?
I
f you constantly run out of money and have to scramble before the next paycheck arrives, chances are you’re not using a budget to manage your finances. Here are six easy steps to create a simple budget and put it to work: 1. If you have a computer, go online to wikihow.com and search for creating a budget. You’ll find a number of articles with basic charts and forms you can print out. If you don’t have a computer, pencil and paper will do just fine. 2. Write down your regular expenses. This will include mortgage payment, auto insurance and payment, credit-card payments, tuition -- anything that’s an expense every month. 3. Make a list of expenses that vary from month to month, such as food, utilities (this is where being on a payment plan for utilities can come in handy), shoes and car repair. Estimate the likely cost if necessary. Don’t forget periodic expens-
4. Track your spending for a month. You need to know exactly where every dollar has gone. This is not the time to pretend you didn’t really spend all that money on lattes and lunches out. Save every receipt and write down your expenses in a small notebook when you’re out. 5. Consider your long-term financial goals, such as knowing you’ll need another vehicle next year and will need a down payment. Again, calculate how much you’ll need to save each month. While considering this goal of a new vehicle (or another large item), consider whether you’ll be able to afford the payment. 6. At the end of the month, total up your figures and compare your outgo with your income. If you’ve had to put things on credit cards, chances are your outgo exceeded the money that came in. If so, you need to identify areas where you can cut back expenses. Start by looking at what you put on credit cards and anything you labeled as miscellaneous expenses, such as snacks and coffee out, and impulse items. The hard part of budgeting comes the following month when you need to make those cutbacks to your spending. But chances are, if you follow your budget, you won’t run out of money before the next check comes in. David Uffington regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Send email to columnreply2@ gmail.com.
