etting older can be a scary thing. You can’t do the same things you used to be able to do. Your clothes don’t quite fit the right way anymore. Maybe you’ve looked in the mirror and wondered who in the world that old person looking back at you was. We’ve all been there. But we don’t have to STAY there. It is possible to see all the great things that getting older has brought.

living and independent living, in-home services like meal preparation, medication reminders, transportation services, and light housekeeping among others.

You don’t have to worry about disappointing your friends when you decline a late night out on the town. You can spoil your nieces, nephews and grandchildren and send them right back to their parents. There’s a whole host of opportunities out there for people getting into those upper digits. And naturally, Snippetz felt it necessary to make it as easy as possible to gather that information so you don’t have to waste your time looking for it . . . instead, you can get out there and start enjoying everything your golden years have to offer!

Maybe your needs are a little different. Perhaps you need some financial help due to decreased income from retirement. The great thing is that there are federal public benefits available for people of a certain age and income to help with the cost of food, housing, health care and supplemental income. • Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program: This program pays heating and cooling bills, plus some energy-related home repairs for those who qualify. The specific annual income qualifications vary state by state so check with your utility company to find out what the requirements are.

THERE’S HELP OUT THERE!

Remember all those times when you wished you could call your mom or dad and ask them how to handle a particularly sticky situation? How they always seemed to know how to handle everything and you couldn’t wait to get older so you knew how to do all those things by yourself? Well, chances are, you’ve found out that no matter how old you get, you still don’t have all the answers and will occasionally find yourself in need of some help or advice.

• Telephone Assistance: This program helps pay for the cost of basic local telephone services for those who qualify. Low-income older adults are urged to apply but acceptance into certain other programs automatically qualifies you for this one. Call your local phone company for details about the Link Up or Lifeline program.

• Medicare: This program offers health insurance to help pay for preventive care, doctor visits, hospital stays and prescription drugs for those who qualify. Applicants must be 65 or older or have disabilities or kidney failure. Call the Social Security Administration at 800-772-1213 for assistance or visit http://socialsecurity.gov. • Medicare Savings Programs: Programs of this type help pay for some of the costs of Medicare, including the Part B premium, deductibles and co-payments for those who qualify. How much the program provides for you depends on your income and assets. The program requirements vary state by state; to see if you qualify, call 800-633-4227 for help. To request an application if you do qualify, call 800362-1504.

• Colorado Food Assistance Program: This program provides a card

There are plenty of businesses out there that can help with certain tasks that you’ve found are more difficult than you anticipated. Take Amada Senior Care, for example. They’re a local healthcare management business that can provide a wide array of assistance opportunities ranging from assisted

graded into uric acid. As blood levels of it rise, it diffuses into and around joints. Uric acid crystals are shaped like needles. Crystals in and near joints kick off the pain of gout. The skin over the joint turns red and becomes warm. Although the big-toe joint often is the first joint affected, the middle of the foot, the ankle and the knee also can attract uric acid crystals. If nothing is done to lower blood uric acid, a second attack occurs in about 11 months.

MAKING GOUT CRYSTAL-CLEAR DEAR DR. DONOHUE: The skin where my big toe joins my foot turned red and felt hot. It was painful. I decided it must be gout. To play it safe, I saw our doctor, who agreed with my diagnosis but insisted on some lab tests and withdrawing fluid from the joint. The tests came back positive for gout. He put me on indomethacin, and the pain stopped almost overnight. I’d like to know more about gout. Will you supply some information? My wife thinks I need a special diet. Do I? -- R.B. ANSWER: Gout is an overproduction of uric acid due to the daily breakdown of cells that release DNA and RNA, the molecules of life. DNA and RNA are further de-

Treatment aims at quickly remedying the pain and more slowly reducing uric acid. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like your indomethacin (Indocin) are effective at abolishing pain and inflammation. If they don’t get the job done, prednisone (a cortisone drug) nips gout in the bud quickly. When colchicine was readily available in the United States, it was a reliable antigout medicine. For the long term, once the acute attack has cooled, then drugs that rid the body of uric acid are begun. Allopurinol (Zyloprim) and probenecid are popular choices. Newer drugs like Uloric and Krystexxa are held in reserve if the standard treatments fail.

The gout diet is simple, not like it was in the days before effective medicines came on the scene. Cut back on your intake of red meat, seafood and fish. Poultry is fine. Reduce the consumption of high-fructose corn syrup, a sweetener found in many soft drinks. Go very easy on beer. You are better off eliminating it. Distilled liquor is less likely to induce a gout attack, but it may. Wine in moderation causes little trouble.

First of all, for there to be real faith, the mind must be engaged. Real faith is founded on facts first. Blind faith (what Wikipedia’s writers were describing) is not concerned with reality, fact or truth. Blind faith says, “My mind is made up; don’t confuse me with the facts.” Real faith wants the facts, seeks the truth and advances forward from there. Faith without some foundation in fact is only fantasy.

Next, for there to be real faith, the emotions must be involved. There is no faith without feelings. The emotional expression of faith in religious worship is an important part of the experience. For two people to agree to be joined together in marriage is an act of faith that requires significant emotional devotion to persevere through good times and bad, health and sickness, etc. For an entrepreneur to take his life’s savings and risk it on a business venture requires a belief in the viability of his

business plan and his own personal skills, despite the lack of any solid guarantee of profit. But to rely strictly on emotions for decisions related to religion, relationships, business or life in general is to surrender logic or truth to the whims of sensation. On the other hand to deny emotions any contribution to daily living is to live without passion and die without love. And finally, for there to be real faith, the will must be involved. You can know something (mind) and you can feel something (emotion), but unless you do something (action), what you know and what you feel will rot away in a neglected corner of your mind and heart. Many people, afraid to act on what they know and feel, live lives of bitterness and regret. They spend their days wondering what would have happened if they would have only … (fill in the blank). Faith happens when what you know and what you feel are balanced with a brave move forward. There are two roads that lead you into tomorrow: one is the road of doubt and despair and the other is the road of faith and hope. Which will you take? You, my dear friend, will find great fulfillment and personal success when your head, your heart and your will, in grand agreement, decide to take a risk and step into tomorrow by faith.

Fawkes revealed that he was part of a conspiracy to annihilate England’s Protestant government and replace it with Catholic leadership. • On Nov. 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln is elected the 16th president of the United States over a deeply divided Democratic Party, becoming the first Republican to win the presidency. Lincoln received only 40 percent of the popular vote but handily defeated the three other candidates.

Nick-Snips

FLOATING ROCKS By Nick Yanez

I

magine darkness and dust. A grey wasteland only colored by the memories of those who used to inhabit the land. A scan of this unadorned atmosphere would only yield hopelessness and disappointment. There is no life. At least, not at first glance. But deep down, underneath the tattered Earth, you’ll find the living; nestled together in a hole. In these secret tunnels are the most important handful of people who are currently living. They are the scientists, political leaders, and high priests of society. They are our best chance. They work tirelessly to rebuild. The scenario you just read was a fictional illustration of what Earth could be like if hit by a massive asteroid someday. And - not to send out panic in my usually-playful Nick Snips column – it’s not as unlikely as you may think. Recent journalistic digging has revealed that scientists and “important people” have actually been preparing for such an event. They’ve been doing it for years, too. But recently, things have gotten serious. In fact, members of the U.N. gathered with renowned astronauts and cosmonauts last week in New York City. The purpose of their meeting was to form the first ever official Contingency Plan for Earth, should it encounter a catastrophic asteroid strike. It’s about time, too. Scientists estimate there are roughly 1-million asteroids floating around in space that are a potential threat to Earth. That’s too many for my liking! More than that, the experts say there are at least 100-times more asteroids out there than we think there are!

Luckily, we’ve got people on the case. In fact, a non-profit organization called the B612 Foundation has been on top of the issue since 2008 (the year that I graduated from High School – coincidence? I think not). They even started constructing a privately funded space telescope, whose entire purpose is to find undetected asteroids in space. But, the wait is long. The organization hopes to launch the machine in 2018. And what happens until then? Well, maybe this U.N./Astronaut collaboration will yield some hope? Not likely. In fact, other than talking about an official Contingency Plan for Earth, all the meeting really accomplished was, and I quote, “improve public awareness for the threats at hand”. Well, I can’t say I didn’t do my part. I mean, now you’re informed. That’s awareness at its finest. But I call shenanigans! I say the coalition met for one real purpose – to build the underground tunnel that only they will gain access to. I mean, it’s the only thing that makes sense. Why fly everyone out to New York City to raise awareness? Heck, I’m about the only person who even reported this obscure meeting, making the awareness growth about 7,000 people at the most. No, we’re smarter than that America. They’re building the underground base. I’m willing to bet some of the high clearance military people within our own community know about it. But I’d bet against them giving you a get-infree card. After all, it’s only for the biggest and brightest. It’s for the greatest minds of our universe. It’s for innovators and intimidators. It’s for thinkers and dreamers. It’s for successful, rich, powerful humans and aliens alike. I wonder if they’ll let me in?

LIVING WELL WITH DIABETES

B

ecause so many Americans -- including my husband, mother, father, youngest sister and many other family members and friends -- are diabetics, I decided to collect 150 of my favorite, healthy recipes and create “The Kitchen Diva’s Diabetic Cookbook: 150 Healthy, Delicious Recipes for Diabetics and Those Who Dine with Them. This is an easy-to-use cookbook that addresses the health and dietary needs of prediabetics, juvenile diabetes, Type 1 and Type 2 diabetics, women with gestational diabetes related to pregnancy, those with diabetic-related complications or anyone seeking to embrace a healthier diet and lifestyle. The recipes also are satisfying for non-diabetics, and I use them when entertaining family and friends. Holiday dining and celebrations are a culinary challenge for most Americans, especially those with diet-related illnesses. While I’m not a diabetic, my family medical history provides a cautionary tale. The American Diabetes Association estimates that while almost 24 million people in the U.S. have diabetes, only 18 million actually have been diagnosed. This means almost 6 million people have diabetes and don’t know it. Some of the signs and symptoms of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes are: increased thirst; frequent urination; extreme hunger, unexplained weight loss; ketones in the urine (ketones are a byproduct of the breakdown of muscle and fat that happens when there’s not enough insulin); fatigue; blurred vision; slow-healing sores; mild high blood pressure; and frequent infections, such as gum or skin infections and vaginal or bladder infections. This recipe for Roasted Tomatoes Stuffed with Lemon and Herb Cauliflower Cous-

13

This is the perfect way to showcase large, multi-colored seasonal tomatoes. Roasting them brings out their sweetness, and stuffing them with the Lemon and Herb Cauliflower Couscous adds another dimension of flavor and creates a unique and visually beautiful side dish, or a lovely light lunch dish on a bed of salad greens. 8 large, ripe tomatoes (red, green, yellow or color of choice) 8 garlic cloves, peeled and smashed 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1 teaspoon black pepper 1 1/2 tablespoons fresh, chopped basil or flat-leaf, Italian parsley 2 tablespoons olive oil Lemon and Herb Cauliflower Couscous (recipe follows) 1. Cut a 3/4-inch slice off the bottom of each tomato, reserving them for lids. Scoop out the seeds and the center pulpy flesh and set it aside. Place a clove of garlic inside each tomato. Mix together 1 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon pepper and the basil or parsley. Then sprinkle a pinch of the mixture inside each tomato. Drizzle some of the oil inside each tomato. Put the sliced tomato lids on and roast at 325 F for 10 to 12 minutes or until the tomatoes just begin to soften, but not so long that they lose their shape. 2. Meanwhile, prepare the Lemon and Herb Cauliflower Couscous (recipe follows). Combine the couscous with the reserved tomato pulp until they are thoroughly incorporated. Spoon the warm cauliflower mixture into the hot tomatoes, and top with the lids. Serve immediately. Makes 8 servings.

LEMON AND HERB CAULIFLOWER “COUSCOUS I enjoy turning a familiar vegetable like cauliflower into a new and exciting “lookalike dish. You’ll be surprised by how pulsing it finely in a food processor and flavoring it with lemon and herbs makes it resemble couscous. The lemon and herbal flavors pair well with chicken, pork or fish, or as a stuffing for tomatoes. Continued on Page 15

SNIPPETZ BUSINESS SECTION ®

THE LAW ACCORDING TO STEVENS by Lisa Welch Stevens, Attorney at Law P.C.

DIVORCE AND THE SMALL BUSINESS OWNER: WHEN THE MARRIAGE DIES, DOES THE BUSINESS DIE TOO? © Oct, 2013 by Lisa Welch Stevens, Attorney at Law P.C.

M

y firm represents primarily small businesses and small business owners. You might think that means we never have to deal with “domestic relations” law; you’d be incorrect. When one spouse – or both spouses together – is selfemployed; i.e., owns a small business, business issues loom very large if the couple decides to dissolve their marriage. Sometimes, unfortunately the small business is “dissolved” too as a result. However, there are ways to avoid that result. The problems when both spouses are employed by their small business are that: (1) there may be no other source of income for either party; and (2) the business may be not only the single biggest asset of the marital estate, it may be the only asset of the marital estate. Not many couples can continue to work together after they divorce. In my 16 years of practice, I have seen it only once. But let’s say a couple agrees to do so. The business can remain in operation, with each spouse separately owning whatever percentage share in the business they have agreed to, or the court has ordered. In this case it is vital to make sure that not only is there one spouse with at least a 51% majority control (50/50 does not work in my experience), but that also there are mechanisms in place for dealing with “stand-offs” between the owners, and third party buy-outs, disability, retirement, termination, etc. of either spouse. This can be handled by having the parties enter into, in addition to a separation agreement with respect to the marriage, a “buy-sell” agreement among both spouses and the business entity itself with respect to the business. However, in the usual situation the business will be valued, along with any other marital assets, and the assets will be divided between the spouses. If there are sufficient assets one spouse might receive all of the business, and the other spouse might

receive the marital residence, or some or all of the financial accounts, etc. Or, if spousal maintenance is appropriate, and one spouse can afford to pay it to the other, spouse #1 might receive all of the business, subject to an order to pay spouse #2 monthly maintenance for a stated period of time. This could be a stated, flat amount, or a percentage of the gross monthly revenues of the business. Another alternative is for spouse #1 to buyout spouse #2, by a promissory note secured by the business’s assets, with monthly payments, and interest, for a stated period of time. If there are insufficient marital assets; for example, the business is the only marital asset, and neither party has outside income, the couple might be faced with dissolving the business, selling its assets, if any, and divvying up the proceeds, if any. Usually little or no money is realized from such a dissolution, except with respect to businesses that carry substantial inventory, own real property, or own valuable intellectual property or hard assets such as tools and equipment.

In any of these scenarios an integral part of the divorce settlement will be devising a business strategy to carry the business forward into the future, while protecting both spouse’s interests as well. This entails not only a formal separation agreement between the spouses with respect to the marriage itself, but also whatever business agreements are necessary to carry-out the business strategy. Such agreements may include not only buysell agreements as discussed above, but also stock purchase agreements, asset purchase agreements, merger and acquisition agreements, etc. A small business need not end up dissolved by the dissolution of the marriage of its owners.
