“What has happened to the good old-fashioned travel agent? I want to go to a really posh travel agent and have them organize everything for me. I don’t want to do things on the Internet.” – Jenny Éclair, comedian

FIRST NATIONAL BANK MONUMENT

n this day and age of do-it-yourself everything, it does make you wonder what happened to those old-fashioned shops that were the backbone of the American economy for so long. People used to go to a butcher to get their meat rather than the meat aisle in the grocery store. The local drug store not only sold prescriptions and candy but you could sit down at the counter and buy a drink from the soda fountain. The local hardware store was more likely to be a mom and pop business rather than a home improvement chain store.

Their appeal lasted for some time but technology ousted the soda fountain slowly but surely with the advent of drive-in fast food restaurants and bottled versions of the soda fountain drinks. By the 1960s, the fountains were seen less and less often and by the 1970s, not even one third of local pharmacies had soda fountains.

Society has opted to forgo small, locally-run specialty shops in favor of massive superstores that boast inventories that could easily make it the best place to ride out a zombie apocalypse. Most of those small stores are gone but Snippetz hasn’t forgotten them!

Drugstores and pharmacies also often sold candy and sweets, as well as magazines and cosmetics. The modern drugstore often sells much more. You can find small electronics, a place to print out your photographs, a variety of common grocery store items and toys. The pharmacy is often tucked in the back like an afterthought and there is more often than not absolutely no place to sit, enjoy a drink or snack and shoot the breeze with other customers.

The word pharmacy is derived from the root word “pharma,” which was used in similar context as early as the 1400s. Interestingly enough, the original Greek word “pharmakos” is used to describe sorcery or poison. Ominous origins aside, the pharmas of old offered more services than just dolling out medicine. They often provided general medical advice and some services such as surgeries or midwifery.

MALT SHOPS Malt shops were an ice cream and fast food type restaurant that were popular in the 1940s-50s. The term malt comes from malted milk, which was invented in the 1880s by brothers James and William Horlick. Malted milk is made from a mixture of malted barley, wheat flour and whole milk that is dehydrated and comes in powder form. Its original purpose was for infants or people with illnesses or disabilities to provide a good source of nu-

Rather than remembering a drugstore as a place to get medicine or medicinal advice, you might have memories of sliding up to the counter and asking for a soda from the fountain. Why would a soda fountain be found in a pharmacy? The term “soda water” was coined in 1798 and the health benefits of the beverage were being touted as well. In 1819, the first soda fountain patent was granted to Samuel Fahnestock and by the 1880s, it was commonplace to see a soda fountain in your local drugstore.

Malt shops’ popularity began to fade when the ease of drive-up fast food joints and drive-in movie theaters provided teens a place to stay in their awesome cars while they ate and socialized.

BUTCHER SHOPS As with the old version of pharmacies, the old version of the butcher is not what we typically see today. Butcher shops from the past were commonplace and The Good Old Days of Shopping... Continued on Page 3

By the time jukeboxes showed up on the scene, malt shops were a popular place for teenagers to hang out, have a snack with friends and listen to the latest hits. In the 1950s, cars were a big deal and teenagers would often cruise up to a malt shops to show off their cars while they ate.

Malt shops first appeared in the early 1900s and were usually found in a drugstore where the soda fountain drinks were also served. Eventually malt shops branched out and became their own entity, including food like sandwiches and hamburgers in order to appeal to a broader range of customers.

provided families with the meat they used in everyday cooking. Since their target population was families, they often sold more cuts of the cheaper meats, like kidneys rather than the more extravagant cuts you’d probably see in a butcher shop today. Once meats were prepackaged and placed in the refrigerator aisle at local grocery store, butchery became more of a specialty profession. Shoppers no longer went to them for their everyday needs and the volume of what a butcher was able to sell decreased significantly. Nowadays butchers mainly provide highquality, expensive cuts of meat like racks of lamb or prime rib. Because they don’t serve the general population as much, they are often turned to for special occasions which makes it difficult for mom and pop shops (as they often were) to make enough money to stay in business. Maybe one day we’ll all remember how fresh their products were, how much better for us their food really was and how important it is to support local businesses and maybe that will lead to a butcher shop revival . . . just maybe.

CANDY AND SWEET SHOPS Before the convenience of the convenience store that attracted kids to come spend their money on a relatively small selection of candy, there were candy and sweet shops. These shops were strictly for sweets. You wouldn’t find imitation cheese to pour on stale tortilla chips or a wall lined with every type of cigarette imaginable. Instead, the walls would be lined with such a wide variety of candy that you could get a toothache just looking at it all. You could load up a bag full of jelly

beans or licorice or gum drops and walk out feeling like you hit the jackpot. Lately there has been a rebound in shops like this since it’s become trendy to buy candy in bulk, especially for weddings, birthday parties and baby showers. The majority of these new shops are in larger cities, however.

The intention of a travel agency or agent is to take care of the preparations for a person’s vacation or trip. They handle the hotel reservations, booking the airline tickets and facilitating transportation at your destination, among other things. They do all the research, price and date comparisons and bothersome paperwork associated with traveling.

16 years of providing the Tri-Lakes community with the best selection of Trees - Wreaths - Garland - Boughs

The Internet has made it significantly easier for a person to plan their own vacation with websites that allow you to bundle airline tickets, hotel reservations, car rentals and the like. Although the ease of doing so in your underwear is very appealing to some people, others prefer allowing someone else to handle all the dirty work and it’s for reasons such as that that have kept travel agencies in business all this time. It’s clear, however, that they are not nearly as popular as they used to be. Just another sign of the times!

CHRISTMAS STRANGE BUT TRUE By Samantha Weaver • Between 1659 and 1681, it was illegal to celebrate Christmas in Massachusetts. If you were caught celebrating, you would be fined five shillings. • St. Nicholas is actually an historical figure, although the name was spelled differently. St. Nikolaus was the bishop of Myra in Asia Minor, and he died on Dec. 6, 343. In different regions of the world he is known as Klaus, Nickel, Sÿnnerklas, Seneklos, Pelznickel, Knecht Ruprecht, Weihnachtsmann and Christkindl. Sometimes he travels on foot, and sometimes he’s shown riding a white horse, a reindeer, a mule or even a goat.

• If you think that Christmas has only recently become a nightmare of consumerism, consider that as early as the mid1820s, Santa Claus was being employed to sell Christmas goods. • Clement Clarke Moore, the author of “A Visit From St. Nicholas” (more popularly known as “The Night Before Christmas”), was born during the American Revolution and died during the Civil War. • The modern image of Santa Claus was invented by American cartoonist Thomas Nast in the late 1800s. Until his cartoons were published at the end of the 19th century, no one really pictured Santa as a fat, jolly old man with white hair. • The first image of a Christmas tree to be

As heartbreaking as alopecia areata is in the short run, there is high hope of complete restoration of hair in time. Around 50 percent will have hair regrowth within a year even if no treatment is given.

BALD PATCHES OFTEN DUE TO IMMUNE ATTACK DEAR DR. DONOHUE: After shampooing my hair, I looked in the mirror and found a large bald patch near my ear. I screamed. I can comb my hair to hide it. Does this mean I am about to lose all my hair? Is there a treatment for it? -- A.A.

Including Allergy Injections

Treatments exist to speed the healing process. One is injection of a high-potency cortisone drug, like triamcinolone, into the bald patch. Another treatment consists of applying an allergen directly to the bald spots. The reaction it produces leads to hair regrowth. The allergen often chosen is DPCP, diphenylcyclopropenone. These are only two of the options open to alopecia areata patients.

ANSWER: With a fair degree of confidence, I can say you have alopecia areata, bald patches that vary in size and number. Close to 4.5 million American adults and children suffer from this condition every year. Like so many other illnesses, it’s the result of an immune system gone berserk. The immune system attacks hair follicles, the skin pores that are homes for each hair. What turns on the immune system to do this is something that waits to be discovered.

Here is one simple suggestion for overcoming the obstacles that try to keep you from achieving your goals: take one step forward. No big leap, no jump to the top, no blind swan dive over the cliff; just one step forward. I give this advice for three reasons.

cent of men, but only 0.4 percent of women. It is, therefore, 20 times more common in men than women. It’s surprising that two of your sisters have it. Less surprising is the number of grandsons and great-grandsons with it. Most colorblind people get along in life without much trouble. And most have some degree of color perception. cholesterol. No member of the plant kingdom does. A medium avocado has around 320 calories. Most of those calories are due to the fat content of this fruit. But the fat is good fat, not the kind of fat that prods the liver to make cholesterol. It also has three B vitamins, vitamin A and vitamin C.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I love avocados. I’m trying to lose some weight, but I hear that avocados have a lot of fat. How can a fruit have fat? -- R.D. ANSWER: Fruits can have fat, as well as protein and carbohydrates. They have no

First of all because one step is all you can ever take at a time. When I decided to get some post-graduate education I had a wife, three children, a full-time job, and no money for tuition. So I took one class – that’s all – just one class. And a few years later I had earned my Master’s Degree.

You can continue to eat avocados, but you have to get rid of something else in your diet that has this many calories.

*** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

ignificance in life is all about overcoming obstacles.

The second reason I suggest you take one step forward is because in many cases that one step will cause your obstacle to flee like a scared cat. Many of the obstacles you see in front of you appear much larger than they actually are. Face them, step into them, confront them with even the smallest step forward and you will notice they

are not the imposing monsters you once thought. The third reason a step forward is what you need to take is that the accumulation of those small steps will grant you victory over time. Your determination will break down resistances and your persistence will power you through problems. But do you know the biggest obstacle you will face each day? It is not the mountain in the path before you; it is the monster of fear inside you. You are the biggest obstacle you face. There will always be more reasons to quit than persevere, to forfeit than fight or halt rather than take another step forward. A friend of mine climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa. He told me, “The closer we got to the top the more difficult it became. We were short of air, exhausted from the climb, but so close to the summit. During the last few yards to the top all we thought about was putting one foot in front of the other.” And that, my friend, is what I’m suggesting you do in the presence of the obstacles that stand before you: put one foot in front of the other, take one step forward. History celebrates those who persevere but disregards those who give up. But you’re something special. You were made to overcome, you were created to persevere; you were born to significance. • On Dec. 8, 1542, in Linlithgow Palace in Scotland, a daughter is born to James V, the dying king of Scotland. Named Mary, she was the only surviving child of her father and ascended to the Scottish throne when the king died just six days after her birth. • On Dec. 2, 1777, legend has it that Philadelphia housewife and nurse Lydia Darragh single-handedly saves the lives of Gen. George Washington and his Continental Army. She made notes when she overheard the British planning a surprise attack and got them to Washington. • On Dec. 6, 1921, The Irish Free State, comprising four-fifths of Ireland, is declared, ending a five-year Irish struggle for independence from Britain. The Irish Free State was renamed Eire, and is now called the Republic of Ireland. • On Dec. 5, 1933, the 21st Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is ratified, bringing an end to the prohibition of alcohol. Prohibition did little more than slow the flow

of booze, and bootleggers like Al Capone built criminal empires out of illegal distribution.

Nick-Snips

THE HEFTY HOLIDAYS By Nick Yanez

H

ow was your Thanksgiving my Colorado companions? Seeing that you can’t actually answer such a question without going through the trouble of emailing me personally – I’ll assume it was like most others. You probably watched a lot of television, ate a lot of food, and put up with your favorite (and least favorite) relatives. Good for you! You’ve accomplished exactly what you set out to accomplish. Now comes the hard part; the home stretch. Christmas is just under four weeks away. It’s likely that you’re planning another big family dinner for that special day. Unfortunately, epic family feasts usually result in unwanted weight gain. So, here’s a special edition of Nick Snips for you with some conventional and not-soconventional ways to shed the extra pounds this holiday season. The Regular Human Being: Our first category applies to those who are sane and have good intentions. After a little bit of research, keeping your weight in check doesn’t seem as difficult as you might think. Strangely, the average American gains one to two pounds every year. I’m willing to bet half of those people gain it around this time of year. But did you know that cutting a measly 100 calories a day could stop that weight gain? Here’s some tips to cut out an easy-100. Talk; Take a Walk – standing and moving is a small, but effective, calorie killer. So next time you get a ring on the old cellular phone, put on some shoes and take a stroll down the street or hall. Simple tasks such as this can easily burn an extra 100 calories a day. Drink Water – instead of soda, juice, and coffee. While some people claim to need the caffeine throughout the day, water is actually the most useful and effective beverage on Earth for any need. It’ll perk you up and it’s a whopping 0 calories. Sleep in – perhaps the most wonderful of all the weight loss tips, a good night sleep will help you shed your craving, according

to some science-folks. A long night of shut eye will regulate your appetite, meaning you’ll have less of an urge to splurge on snacks and sweets. The Impractical Celebrity: I’m not trying to endorse crazy behavior here in our small community; but it’s your life. Here are some quick weight loss techniques used successfully by celebrities The Christian Bale – For his disturbing 2004 film The Machinist, Bale sustained himself on water, one apple, and one cup of coffee every day. That’s it. The result saw the 6-foot actor lose 65-pounds in just about two months. Talk about dedication, the actor explained the hardest part about the diet; avoiding temptation, “In the end I had to stop going out. I decided no more social life, no more friends, no more dinners, no more drinks”. Certainly not ideal for the holiday season. The Lindsay Lohan – Notable celebrities like John Goodman lost tons of weight when they quit drinking alcohol. Lindsay tried the opposite approach, where her entire intake was alcohol and illegal substances. For weight loss, it worked brilliantly. But, as most of us know, it didn’t really do much for her day-to-day life. Certainly not recommended. The 50 Cent – The rapper/actor/producer went to great lengths, dropping almost 60pounds in nine weeks, to play a sick patient in the underground movie Things Fall Apart. 50 Cent only drank liquids for nine weeks! No solids, whatsoever! He got the idea from a personal experience; when he was shot in the mouth back in 2000, he could only drink liquids for weeks. He did it then, why not now? What an inspiring story, huh? It’s worth noting that all of these actors quickly gained their weight back when they stopped the insanity. If you want to lose, or even just maintain weight through the holidays, stick to a healthy, reasonable diet. If you want to drop 50 or pounds in a couple of weeks in hopes of winning an Academy Award, I guess try the celebrity technique. But don’t be surprised when you don’t get nominated at all, and the tabloids turn on you.

Those who turn age 66 in 2014 will have an earned income cap of $41,400, with $1 deducted for every $3 earned over that amount for the months until they reach full retirement age. Those who are the full retirement age for the whole year will have no benefits deducted for any income earned. Medicare’s Part B premium, however, will stay the same as in 2013, which is $104.90 (for those with incomes of less than $85,000). If you received the email saying the premium will go up to $247 per month, don’t worry. The email was a fake and has been on the Internet for three years now.

• Pay more than the minimum every month on your credit cards. If you can’t make a payment, call the creditor and work out a plan. Doing so might keep you from getting nailed with higher interest rates.

DO YOU KNOW YOUR CREDIT SCORE?

B

efore you begin your holiday shopping, ask yourself this: Do you know your credit score?

A recent survey by the American Bankers Association showed that 56 percent of those polled did not know their FICO, which is their credit score. A credit score is more than just a number, it represents your total creditworthiness: whether your bills are paid on time, how much of your available credit you’ve used and much more. Here are some tips from the American Bankers Association: • Order your credit report every year, and take a close look at it. By law, you can get one free at www.annualcreditreport.com or call 1-877-322-8228. • Be clear on the value of a good credit rating. The consequences of having a low score can be far-reaching. At the very least, the number will help lenders determine if they’re going to give you money, and if so, at what rate of interest. However, others use that same credit score for employment screening, insurance rates -- even applications for housing rentals.

IN ITALY, ‘SANTA’ RIDES A BROOMSTICK

I

n Italy, the Feast of the Epiphany, celebrated on Jan. 6 with a national holiday, is very much like our traditional Christmas celebrations in North America. Epiphany commemorates the 12th day of Christmas when the three Wise Men arrived at the manger bearing gifts for Baby Jesus. The traditional Christmas holiday season in Italy lasts through Epiphany. Epiphany’s equivalent of Father Christmas, La Befana, arrives on her broomstick during the night of Jan. 5 and fills children’s stockings with sweets and toys. Like our very own Santa, La Befana will leave coal for all those naughty children! It’s said she carries a broom to sweep away the old year to make room for the new. Legend has it that the night before the Wise Men arrived at the manger, they stopped at the shack of an old woman

• Read the fine print on any credit application. Note the credit limits, annual fees, terms and conditions, and the grace period. • Don’t pay those who say they can fix your credit report. It can’t be done. Accurate information (even negative) is on your report until it scrolls off, usually many years from now. It’s not easy to fix a low credit score, but you can with constant monitoring of your spending. Keep your credit use low, and pay your bills (more than the minimum) on time every month, and eventually your credit score will climb. • Don’t make late payments, and don’t approach the limit on your credit cards. Using too much of your available credit causes your credit score to fall. If you can’t afford the payment, don’t make the purchase.

• Beware the danger signs: If you can pay only the minimum each month, get a lot of cash advances just for living expenses or transfer balances back and forth, you’re likely getting into trouble. Talk to someone about it to help get you back on track. The National Foundation for Credit Counseling (www. nfcc.org) is a good place to start. to ask directions. They invited her to come along, but she said she was busy sweeping and cleaning her house. Later that night, she saw a great light in the sky and decided to join the Wise Men bearing gifts that had belonged to her child who had died. She got lost and never found the manger. Now La Befana flies around on her broomstick each year on the 11th night, bringing gifts to children in hopes that she might find the Baby Jesus. La Befana is represented as an old lady, wearing a black shawl and covered in soot who enters houses through the chimney carrying a bag or hamper filled with her gifts. Children hang their stockings on the evening of Jan. 5 awaiting her arrival. Italians spend their day on Jan. 6 opening their doors to welcomed visitors, watching children unwrapping their gifts and laying out tables full of cakes and traditional Italian liqueurs.
