umans seem to have an obsession with spies. We love the idea of a highlytrained government operative walking around amongst us mere mortals without showing a hint of who they truly are. It’s incredibly intriguing to imagine that the soccer mom who lives next door is actually working for a secret government agency, tracking down terrorists in between cooking dinner and reading bedtime stories. There are plenty of movies and television shows out there that feature spies. Honestly, there are too many to mention them all here. But Snippetz just had to do some undercover work of our own to scrounge up a sampling of these infamous spies . . . and here they are!

It would practically be illegal to discuss spies without mentioning the James Bond character. Created by writer Ian Fleming in 1953, Bond was featured in 12 novels and two short-story collections. Following Fleming’s death in 1964, six other authors have written Bond novels or stories to continue the spy’s legacy. Aside from the novels, Bond has been adapted for television, radio, comic strips, video games and the most obvious format, film.

• Fleming initially outfitted Bond with a Beretta 418 pistol until “Dr. No” was about to be released. A fan wrote Fleming a letter saying the gun was actually a lady’s gun and suggested Bond use a Walther PPK instead. The producers agreed and switched Bond’s weapon. • Liam Neeson turned down the role of Bond in the 1995 film “Goldeneye.”

Bond films represent the longest continually-running and second highest grossing film series. The series began in 1962 with Sean Connery playing James Bond in “Dr. No.” Since then, 23 films have been created in the Eon Production Series and two others (the spoof “Casino Royale” in 1967 and “Never Say Never” in 1983) that were independently produced.

• The scuba diving scene in the opening of the1964 film “Goldfinger” is based on actual events, including the part where Sean Connery strips off his wetsuit to reveal a completely dry tuxedo.

The Bond films have featured 13 different actors portraying the spy, who Fleming created as an intelligence officer in the Secret Intelligence Service, or MI6. Bond’s code name is 007 and he was created as a Royal Naval Reserve Commander.

• Sean Connery really embraced the role of Bond which was plainly illustrated when he disarmed ex-marine Johnny Stompanato on a movie set. Stompanato was having an affair with Lana Turner who was making a film with Connery. Stompanato became

Fleming named his character James Bond after a prominent American ornithologist of the same name. He said the name James Bond was “the dullest name I have ever heard.” Fleming wanted his character to have the simplest, dullest, most boring name possible because he liked the juxtaposition of a seemingly ordinary man being used as a deadly weapon by the government.

The films ultimately aim to exaggerate the plots and implausible situations that occur in such movies. The general theme of the movies is that Austin Powers, played by Mike Myers, has to save the world while an evil villain tries to destroy it. The villain in the first two films is Dr. Evil, also played by Mike Myers and is based on the Bond super villain, Blofeld from “You Only Live Twice.” Even though Powers is not attractive in the conventional sense, doesn’t possess the social grace and charisma of James Bond, and often ends up making a fool of himself in some form or another, he wins out in the end. Just like any good spy should!

While not exactly the ultra-suave character portrayed in the Bond films, Austin Powers was a spy nonetheless. And the films have become incredibly popular, considering the initial movie was spoof of the spy flicks (like James Bond) from the 1960s.

The episodes take place over the course of one hour and to emphasize the realtime flow of events, there is a clock displayed on the screen during the show. Typically, Bauer spends that hour doing everything in his power to save his family (who routinely find themselves in some sort of danger) as well as to save the world from terrorists. It’s a show that truly is a “race against the clock.”

We’ve looked at a stereotypical spy character from a film series as well as a notso-stereotypical spy in a film series. Now we turn to a television series whose run began in November 2001 and has recently announced it will return for another 12-episode event season called “24: Live Another Day” debuting in May 2014. That’s right. We’re talking about “24” starring Kiefer Sutherland as Jack Bauer, agent with the Counter Terrorist Unit.

• Jack Bauer is the only character to appear in all eight regular seasons as well as the three event series that followed.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: This is the second time I have had plantar fasciitis. The first time was more than five years ago. A doctor outlined a program for me, but I have forgotten the details. Will you give me a refresher course? -- L.O. ANSWER: “Plantar” is the sole of the feet. The plantar fascia is a band of sturdy tissue that runs from the heels to the toes. It supports the feet and the foot arches. Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain. Professional baseball, football and basketball players get it. People with flat feet or very high arches, overweight people, those who

PALMER LAKE WELLNESS CENTER

Weight loss is the answer to this problem if a person is overweight. Limit your walking, and don’t do any running. You can bike and swim to stay in shape. At night, splint the foot so the toes point to the ceiling when you lie on your back. If the foot falls downward toward the bed, it aggravates heel pain. Ice the heel four times a day for 15 minutes. A silicone heel insert often proves helpful. Make sure your shoes are well-cushioned. Loop a towel around the front of the foot and, while seated, pull the towel so the foot is drawn to the body. This stretches the fascia. If this program fails, then see a doctor. A cortisone shot can bring rapid relief.

Other causes of heel pain include entrapment of a heel nerve in scar tissue, a loss of the fat pad that cushions the heel (found mostly in older people) and tiny fractures of the heel.

STAY CLASSY, COLORADO By Nick Yanez

A

dvertising is a tricky game. Those who have mastered it are really just artists in human manipulation. It’s about a convincing attitude and deceitful message; most of the time, anyway. Sure, sometimes they give it to you straight – but that’s not advertising. True advertising is about creating a message that resonates with your target audience. You have to make them believe they need your product in their life. They “can’t live without it”. Lately, certain companies have taken unique and effective ad campaigns to dominate the industry. Usually, this is best done through television. Companies like Sonic have extremely recognizable television commercials. Who doesn’t know those two annoying guys who go to Sonic every day for burgers and shakes but don’t seem to gain any weight? One of my personal favorite television spots belongs to Dos Equis. ‘The Most Interesting Man in the World’ has certainly gotten my interest. Then there are characters like Flo, The Gecko, and The-DiscountDouble-Check-guy (AKA NFL Superstar Quarterback Aaron Rogers). Those characters almost feel like real people to us. Recently a particular ad campaign has gotten my attention, to say the least. The recent television blitz of fictional newscaster Ron Burgundy, famous for his catch phrase “Stay classy, San Diego” has redefined movie hype. It’s pure brilliance. The wait for Anchorman 2 has been a long one. The original Anchorman was released in the early 2000’s (it was my first movie-date ever, in fact). The charming but shamelessly sexist Ron Burgundy (played by popular comedian Will Ferrell) won over the hearts of American movie goers a decade ago. Finally, Ferrell will reprise his role as the asinine news anchor this month, a couple of days before Christmas. While the movie has yet to be reviewed – it could be a total dud – you can’t say they didn’t do their absolute best to promote the film. For several months now we’ve seen the lead character Burgundy ramble

non-sense in those Dodge Durango commercials. That’s all par for the course, though. What’s been happening over the last couple of weeks, however, has been a phenomenal bit of marketing. After surprising thousands of people by hijacking the Lead Anchor role on a local North Dakota news broadcast, Will Ferrell’s signature alter ego Ron Burgundy was also scheduled to host an entire episode of Sports Center. He even had an interview with Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning on ESPN.com! “You are one of the great Quarterbacks playing the game today” Burgundy opens with, “You’ve had a lot of success. And yet you’ve done it all without a mustache?” he asks confused. The anchorman continues, “You’re running out around there, and, I’m going to be honest with you” he confesses, “You look like a baby succulent lamb”. Of course Peyton, being the half-breedcelebrity he is now, played along like a pro, “I guess I just never had the desire to grown a mustache” said the 4-time MVP, “Eli tried to grow one a while back – without much success, I must say”. It was riot. And guess what? It was all for a film advertisement. Want to know the most amazing part? They didn’t even plug the movie! That’s right, Ron Burgundy has been so forced into our daily lives that they don’t even feel the need to plug the film in their own ad campaign. We’re just supposed to know. And why wouldn’t we? There’s been Ice Cream, Clothing, and even a brand of Ron Burgundy Scotch (made in Scotland) released on the shelves of most major retail and grocery stores. I’m not here to promote Anchorman 2; in theaters everywhere December 18th. In fact, I didn’t even enjoy the first one as much as everyone else did. Of course I was 12 or 13 at the time, but it didn’t go as well as I had built up in my head (it was my first movie date, after all). I’m just here to promote the promotion of Anchorman 2. It’s been flawless, if not inspiring. So the next time you see Ron Burgundy invading your television where he doesn’t belong, stand up. Applaud. And give respect to the greatest hype for a movie ever created.

different areas: verbal ability, working memory, executive functioning, processing speed, episodic memory and complex speed. After doing a baseline test, the participants were retested two months later.

BLUEBERRIES AND TEA FOR HEALTH?

I

f you like to have a blueberry muffin and a cup of green tea in the morning, you might be halfway to increasing your cognitive functioning. That’s only half said in jest. Natura Therapeutics, a pharmaceutical company, has created a product that has been proven to increase cognitive function in older adults -- and blueberries and tea are half the ingredients. The whole list of ingredients is proprietary blend of blueberry, L-carnosine, green tea and vitamin D-3, which when combined produce more stemcell rejuvenation than if used individually. The product is called NutraStem Cardio. In a double-blind test (no one knew who was getting the real thing or a placebo), 105 adults with an average age of 73.6 years were tested in six

The results: processing speed improved significantly, and there were improvements in decision-making, memory and attention. This means that there’s hope for having products that actually improve cognitive health. There are some caveats, however: The company did its own research. The number of participants was small, and it was only done once. On the other hand, Natura Therapeutics is aligned with the University of South Florida, and the school’s scientists are the ones who developed the product and ran the research. This is big. Grabbing any supplement off the grocery shelves is risky because we don’t know what’s in the products or where they came from. With the University of South Florida standing behind this one, there’s assurance that at least the product won’t hurt us and might even help. • It was noted German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche who made the following sage observation: “The surest way to corrupt a youth is to instruct him to hold in higher esteem those who think alike than those who think differently.” • A scorpion can live for an entire year without eating. • If you lack a belief in ghosts, UFOs, telepathy or other paranormal phenomena, you are in rare company; only 7 percent of Americans share your lack of belief. • If you traveled along Highway 50 east of Reno, Nev., in recent decades, you may have had the opportunity to see -- and perhaps even contribute to -- the world’s largest shoe tree. It’s claimed that the cottonwood got its start as a landmark when a quarreling couple, on their wedding night, threw each other’s shoes into

the branches. This shoe-tossing (for reasons unclear) became a tradition, and the tree gradually became laden with the odd offerings. Travelers these days, though, miss out on the attraction; in late 2010, vandals cut down the tree. But take heart, seekers of the unusual! Shoe trees can be found in 18 other states, ranging from California to New York. • During the entire presidency of Bill Clinton, he sent two emails. • The Bronx Zoo is a well-respected institution these days, but some moments of its history show that it didn’t always deserve such respect. For instance, in 1906, a man named Oto Benga was placed as an exhibit in the monkey house. He was a pygmy from Congo. • It seems that the Germans have a word for everything. For instance, “waldeinsamkeit” describes the feeling of being alone in the woods. *** Thought for the Day: “Until you’ve lost your reputation, you never realize what a burden it was or what freedom really is.” -- Margaret Mitchell (c) 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

LIVING GOD’S GIFTS bringing Christ into your financial life

by Chuck Maher, CFP®

...BRING CHRIST INTO OUR FINANCIAL LIVES

LAST CHANCE FOR TAX PLANNING

T

he year is quickly coming to an end and soon we will be facing the arduous task of preparing our 2013 tax returns. Some of us will procrastinate to the April deadline, others will file for extensions and still others will file at the earliest possible moment. Whichever category you fit in I would encourage you to take a little bit of time in this special season to do a preemptive strike – a trial tax return. That’s right, in addition to everything else, I am suggesting you do your taxes in December. Too often taxpayers lose out on deductions, which could save them money, because they did not act before the year’s end. Here are a few items that, in my practice I find, are often overlooked. Review Your Income Your income is the driving force for determining your tax obligations. It’s not just your W-2 income but income from all sources that will determine your tax bracket. Often if your income can be postponed until the following year you can reduce your overall tax bill. For example, if you receive annual income from an annuity it may make sense to instruct the insurance company to forgo payments until early 2014. By doing so you may very well move yourself into a lower tax bracket without creating any unnecessary hardship. If you find that a large part of the income that you are receiving is being taxed as ordinary income (i.e. interest income) you may want to consider taking advantage of investments that produce tax-free or capital gain income. However, this will not help you with your 2013 tax obligation but could reduce your taxes in 2014. Required Minimum Distribution IRS required distributions from qualified plans, like IRAs, 401(k)s and other pension plans, are not tax deductible, but I have found too often those who have reached 70 1/2 have failed to take the required distributions. The tax penalties for failing to doing so are quite severe. I would encourage you to review your retirement accounts to make sure that you are in compliance with the distribution requirements. If you are over 70 ½, do not need the money and are philanthropic you may want to consider gifting your required minimum distribution to your church, favored charity or school. By doing so you can avoid taxes on the distribution altogether and do good at the same time. Harvesting Capital Losses If 2013 were to end today it would be a banner year for investors. All the equity markets are up. For investors who took advantage of the stock market that is good. Unfortunately that success also brings with it capital gains tax. Equity mutual funds, after writing off capital losses for the last few years, are expected to be making large capital gain distributions. For non-qualified

accounts, those distributions, whether or not you reinvest them, as well as any profits that you made from the sale of equities will be taxed. Before the year is out review your portfolio looking for investments that have not performed as you had hoped – investments that are worth less than what you paid for them. You may want to consider selling those investments at a loss and using that capital loss to offset the gains that you have made with other investments. Selling an investment at a loss may seem counterintuitive but it can save you money when the taxman calls. Health Savings Accounts Contributions to a Health Savings Account (HSA) are tax-deductible. Sadly, too many with high deductible health insurance plans that allow for HSAs, are not taking advantage of that deduction. By fully funding your HSA account not only will you get a deduction for 100% of your contribution you will also get tax-deferred growth on any investment you make with the money as well as tax free distributions when the funds are used for qualified medical expenses – expenses that you would otherwise pay for with after-tax dollars. For those over age 55 the maximum HSA contribution limit is $7,450.

Retirement Catch Up Another often overlooked tax deferral opportunity is available to those who take advantage of the catch-up provisions offered through most employer-sponsored retirement plans. For those who turned 50 in 2013, as well as those of us who are over 50, the maximum contribution limit to a 401(k), 403(b) and other retirement plans is increased by $5,500. If you have savings that can see you through the end of the year you may want to discuss with your HR department the options you have available for deferring income through year-end and fully funding your retirement account. By doing so you will reduce your taxable income and as a bonus increase the assets working for you in your retirement account. Over the next few weeks as we countdown to Christmas and the New Year the demands on our time seem limitless. With parties and shopping, cooking and cleaning, Christmas cards and presents the one thing we don’t need is one more thing to do. But if you will make the time to visit with your tax professional to review your taxes you may find, at least financially, it was well worth the time.
