an’s best friend has always been the dog. Their loyalty and unconditional love make them the perfect companion at the end of a long day or lonely week. Maybe you prefer the smaller breeds that fit into your favorite handbag so you can tote them around on all your shopping trips. Or maybe you are drawn to the larger breeds that lounge around all day until the doorbell rings and then they lose their minds barking in an attempt to protect their family from that scary visitor. There are many different breeds that can fit with just about any personality or preference. Many are considered “designer” dogs because they are specifically bred for certain traits. What are some of these so-called designer breeds? Which ones are currently the most popular? Leave it to Snippetz to hunt down these dogs and round them all up in one place just for you!

Because Poodles come in a range of sizes, Goldendoodles also fall into three main size-ranges: miniature (15-30 pounds), medium (3045 pounds) and standard (45-100 pounds or more). Knowing what size Poodle your Goldendoodle was bred from can make it easier to predict the full-grown size of your animal but because they are cross-bred, there is no guarantee that your Goldendoodle will fall into a specific weight range.
The Puggle is a cross between a Pug and a Beagle. Since 2002, the breed has risen in popularity ranking from No. 157 to No. 69. Puggles are full of energy and very playful but are often stubborn and uncooperative. Beagles are often independent and tend to roam, making them hard to contain at times and it’s said that breeding them with Pugs was an effort to dampen their wandering urge. However, Pugs are said to be extremely stubborn at times and coupled with the wide willful streak of the Beagle, Puggles can display the worst of both breeds. More often
Goldendoodles are typically intelligent, friendly and sociable. Their moderate activity level requires that they have ample exercise and playtime each day. Larger Goldendoodles tend to be more active and can actually make great competitors in agility competitions. Poodles are often touted as being hypoallergenic and because Goldendoodles are their descendants, they are often considered to be more so than some other cross breeds. However, allergies are caused by the animal’s dander, not their fur so while some
Because of their rising popularity rate, Puggles are often bred in puppy mills where the living conditions are poor and the animals are not treated well. It’s important to know where your Puggle comes from to have the best chance of raising a happy, healthy animal. Both Pugs and Beagles are known for having healthy appetites and are prone to becoming overweight if their food intake isn’t properly managed. Puggles often end up weighing close to 30 pounds rather than the often-anticipated 15-20 pound animal even when their weight is properly managed. Color-wise, Puggles can greatly vary in their appearance even within the same litter. They make great indoor dogs and should always live with their people inside. It might be tempting to give your Puggle the boot outside on a mild summer night, especially if it tends to snore as many do, but they Truly Mixed Breeds... Continued on Page 3

LABRADOODLE We know this one might be hard to guess but the Labradoodle is a mix between a Labrador Retriever and Poodle. This breed’s popularity ranking has jumped from no. 117 in 2002 to No. 38. Wally Conron, the head breeder for the Australian Guide Dog Association in 1989, is credited as the first person to intentionally breed a Labradoodle. Labradoodles were originally bred as an attempt to create a hypoallergenic dog that could be used in service work, such as a guide dog. But as with Goldendoodles, there is no guarantee that a Labradoodle will no cause an allergic reaction. Just as with the Goldendoodle, Labradoodles come in three size ranges: miniature (15-30 pounds), medium (30-45 pounds) and standard (45100 pounds or more). And as with the Goldendoodle, there is no way to guarantee the size of the Labradoodle you’ll end up with. Labradoodles have a moderate activity level and the larger animals tend to be more active than the smaller ones. They are very smart, sociable and learn quickly. As with the previous two breeds, Labradoodles need to live indoors with their people.
valuables. This breed comes in a variety of colors but typically has a white or creamcolored coat. The texture can either be slightly scruffy like the Maltese or curly like the Poodle.

THE RICH LOWRY COLUMN By Rich Lowry
AMERICA’S GREATEST CHRISTMAS CLASSIC
A
merica’s classic Christmas song was written by a Jewish immigrant. Born in Russia with the name Israel Baline, he was the genius songwriter we know as Irving Berlin. He wrote “White Christmas for the 1942 Hollywood musical “Holiday Inn, starring Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire. On set, the movie’s hit number was presumed to be another Berlin composition, the Valentine’s Day song “Be Careful, It’s My Heart. At first, it was. Then “White Christmas captured the public’s imagination and hasn’t quite loosed its grip since. As my colleague Mark Steyn puts it in a winsome podcast interview with Berlin’s daughter Mary Ellin Barrett, “Berlin loved
the year that American men were first shipped overseas, and it was released into a wave of homesickness. Mary Ellin Barrett says it first caught on with GIs in Great Britain. During the course of the war, it became the most requested song with Armed Forces Radio.
America and he sang its seasons: Easter (“Easter Parade), July Fourth (“God Bless America) and, of course, Christmas. Some estimates point to sales of all versions of “White Christmas topping 100 million. According to Albert and Shirley Menendez in their book on American Christmas songs, it made the charts for two decades straight, and as late as 1969 was the No. 1 Christmas song in the country. You are sure to hear it multiple times any Christmas season, on the radio, on TV or at the mall.
Berlin knew he had something special with “White Christmas as soon as he wrote it. He supposedly enthused to his secretary, “I just wrote the best song I’ve ever written -- heck, I just wrote the best song that anybody’s ever written! The song evokes the warmth of the hearth and the comforts of our Christmas traditions in a way that hasn’t stopped pulling at heartstrings yet.
It is a song built on yearning. In lines at the beginning of the original version that aren’t usually performed, Berlin writes of being out in sunny California during the holiday: “There’s never been such a day/in Beverly Hills, L.A./But it’s December the twentyfourth,/And I’m longing to be up North.
In an essay in The New Republic, Jonathan Fischer asks what has become of the golden age of pop Christmas songs between the 1930s and 1950s that not only gave us “White Christmas, but “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, “The Christmas Song and such lesser standards as “Sil-
Steyn thinks that if America had entered World War II a few years earlier, the song might never have taken off. But 1942 was
ver Bells, “Santa Baby and “Frosty the Snowman. Well, the writing was better, the standards higher, the culture more charming and less abased. But Fischer notes something else -- Christmas meant more. “As the religious purpose of Christmas has gotten increasingly remote, he writes, “pop songwriters seem to have less to say about it and “a traditional and sentimental version of Christmas ... doesn’t appeal to the wider, more fractured popular culture the way it once did. Maybe we can’t make great Christmas songs anymore, but we can still listen to them, and that will have to be consolation enough. May your days be merry and bright. Rich Lowry is editor of the National Review. (c) 2013 by King Features Synd., Inc.

The prostate gland lies directly below the urinary bladder, and the bladder’s drainage tube, the urethra, runs through the gland. A large gland presses on the bladder and obstructs the urethra. That’s why many men with a large gland have to run to the bathroom so often -- they cannot completely empty their bladder.
TRY MEDICINES FIRST FOR ENLARGED PROSTATE DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have to trot to the bathroom many times during the day and many more times at night. Is this due to my prostate gland? I’m 74 and wasn’t bothered by bathroom visits a year ago. Does this mean surgery for me? How do I know if this is prostate cancer? -- R.R. ANSWER: Odds are you have benign prostatic hyperplasia, the official name for a large prostate gland. In their 40s, a quarter of males have a gland that’s larger than normal. In their 70s, 80 percent of men have an enlarged gland. Not all these men have symptoms like repeated trips to the bathroom, a hard time starting the urinary stream and a decrease in the force of the stream.

You don’t have to jump to surgery right off the bat. Medicines often solve the problem. One class of medicines stops the forceful bladder contractions that signal an urgent need to void. Uroxatral, Flomax and Rapaflo are examples of this drug family. Their effect is seen within a week. Another family of drugs shrinks the gland. Avodart and Proscar are two such medicines. Their effect isn’t seen for up to six months. Combining both classes of drug is another method of treatment.

You don’t know if an enlarged gland has cancer cells in it. The PSA blood test, flawed as it is, provides some evidence for cancer. Biopsy of the gland is the ultimate cancer test. Downtown Historic Monument 283 Washington St. Monument, CO 80132
That night, surrounded by the musty odors of the barn and the presence of a variety of animals that sought refuge in the same structure, the man’s wife gave birth to a lovely little baby boy. The next day the motel was a-buzz with the news that a baby was born out back. Even the innkeeper, aroused by the activity, likely wandered out to the shed to see for himself.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My son is 43. When he was 20, he started getting lumps, which the doctors called lipomas. He has them on his whole body in varying sizes, except for on his face. No one else in the family has them. What can be done besides cutting them out? -- M.F. ANSWER: Lipomas are mounds of fat encased in a tough covering material. They range in size from a golf ball to two or three times that size. They’re soft, and they are not painful. Surgical removal, at present, provides the best results. If your son has too many for total removal, a select few,
By Dr. Ron Ross
the most bothersome ones, can be excised. Research is ongoing to find a substance that will dissolve these fatty tumors. Injection with cortisone medicines can shrink them a bit, but it doesn’t totally get rid of them. The results are somewhat mixed, and it isn’t a popular treatment.
Now I know the original story doesn’t say so, but I believe that once the innkeeper saw the little baby boy, that suddenly a room became available for him and his mother; and other resources that the new family needed were freely offered. I think that once the innkeeper saw the baby, his apathy changed to sympathy and his hard heart turned to compassion.
*** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.
Why do I think that happened? Because that’s the kind of impact this little baby has had on people around the world for well over two thousand years.
(c) 2013 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved
When they take a good look at that little baby born behind the motel in that smelly barn, their lives are changed. They go from Scrooge to saint, from taker to giver, from tightwad to philanthropist, from miser to minister.
Need some evidence? Just take a look around. You’ll find hospitals, schools, social service agencies and volunteer groups in every land helping the sick, teaching the uninformed, housing the homeless, caring for the dying, and joyfully doing the work that many people think should be done by some cold, soulless government agency. Show me a hospital erected by an atheist, or find me a social service agency funded by agnostics. There are few if any volunteer organizations that serve the hurting word established by humanists, new-agers, Marxists, or secular progressives. When disaster comes to any location on earth who arrives to help first - the National Association of Wiccans? What about the ACLU, do they show up? Only if some kindly volunteer is caught praying with a hurting soul, then they’ll jump into action and try to shut down the whole operation. You can depend on it, when disaster comes to almost any place on earth the first help on scene usually comes from the Salvation Army. This impressive, worldwide organization was started in 1875 in England by a Christian minister to the slums of London where thieves, prostitutes, gamblers and drunkards were among his first converts. It’s a matter of fact: there is no other religion in all the world that is as generous, loving, caring and other-oriented as the one that started in the back yard of that two-bit motel a couple of millennium ago. I can’t explain it but for some reason when people consider the meaning of that special birth and the message of love and forgiveness that came from his lips later in life, they change. They go from being wasted, wandering malcontents to useful, generous citizens. They no longer focus just on what they can get, but ask, “What can I give, how can I help?” Send your comments to Dr.Ross@ RonRossToday.com. ©2013 Dr. Ronald D. Ross

Nick-Snips
THE COOLEST THING EVER! By Nick Yanez
L
ook at that, folks, the year flew by! Christmas is next week and before you know it, we’ll be singing Auld Lang Syne and clanking champagne glasses to welcome in 2014. This doesn’t mean much, in reality. The truth is some people think the “holidays” are commercialized and hyped to the point where the true meaning is completely lost. I stand neither here nor there on such accusations. I do however, owe you all a Christmas gift. You’ve already given your gift to me by simply flipping to this article every week. So, for my spectacular gift to you, I present an article about THE COOLEST THING EVER! It’s a bridge. One in China. I know, I know, it sounds underwhelming, but believe me, it’s not. The architectural genius of this bridge is mind numbing. In fact, the structure itself looks kind of like an illusion. The “Mobius” Bridge was designed in a competition by a Dutch firm named NEXT Architects; who won the bid to build the bridge. They created something that’s never been attempted before. A quick glance at the bridge will show you a series of weaving lines; up and down. It was designed based on a Mobius Ring, a one sided surface created by twisting and joining one end of a rectangle with its other fixed end. A simple pedestrian project; the bridge will span 490 feet long, by 78 feet high. The interwoven, spaghettibridge will span a river within the town of Meixi lake.
Sure we take pride in such structures like The St. Louis Arch, and the Empire State Building, but who are we kidding. These old time monuments are child’s play next to what we’re seeing the rest of the world take on. So, why the architectural drought? America has nearly 9,000 graduates with some kind of degree in Architecture every year! That’s a ton of professionals entering the work force every year. Now, in fairness, most of these young bright minds can’t be expected to reinvent American architecture. It should also be noted that in our great nation, safety and stability are upheld more so than any other nation on Earth; making sure the structure will function as it is intended is our number one priority. But still, that bridge in China makes me awful jealous. Can you imagine if after months and months of the highway construction we’ve had between North Gate and North Academy they unveiled an architecturally brilliant carpool lane that twisted and turned creating a fortune-cookie like pattern that wouldn’t be out of place in Neverland? That would be so awesome! I’d be stoked; and I’m sure most people would be. It would be impressive. It would be revolutionary. It would be every reason I like living in America. We’re supposed to be over-the-top and outrageous even when there’s no reason to be. So why are we letting China build THE COOLEST THING EVER? I’ve no answer for this deep, dark question. It opens up a lot of questions. And looking back, I see that my Christmas gift to you is nothing but a reminder of how careful we’ve become. Because come the end of 2014, China will have THE COOLEST THING EVER, and we’ll just have the Arch in Missouri. But it brings up a good goal; a potential solution even. Be great. Never settle for less. One day, perhaps you’ll reinvent the wheel. Perhaps you’ll try and fail. Either way, it’s important to be the best you can be. Try to remember that this Holiday season.
Dutch firm NEXT Architects create the fascinating bridge based on a Mobius ring and ancient Chinese art.
It brings into question why America is so far behind is awesome architecture.

EMERGENCYROOM STAY CAN COST A BUNDLE
T
he length of time you might spend in the emergency room has gotten longer -- and longer -- as many Medicare patients are held under what’s called “observation status.” AARP recently completed a study called “Rapid Growth in Medicare Hospital Observation Services: What’s Going On?” that shows the length of time patients are held that way has grown, sometimes to more than 48 hours. If you’re a Medicare patient, you can be toting up out-of-pocket costs with every passing hour you’re held in this medical limbo. There’s no cost-sharing cap with these observation status stays, not to mention that you might not receive the level of care that you should have. As an observation outpatient, you’re liable for the costs of tests and procedures.
Additionally, if you end up in skilled nursing, the observation status time you spend in the hospital doesn’t count for the Medicare requirement that you have three days as an inpatient. Your portion of the costs can skyrocket, and you might even be denied skilled nursing care because you weren’t in the hospital long enough as an official inpatient. Here are some specifics from the AARP study: • Observation status stays have increased 94 percent. • Patient status (observation versus inpatient) is sometimes changed by the hospital after the patient is sent home. • The average cost for skilled nursing that Medicare didn’t cover (due to being originally held in observation limbo) was $10,503. A number of senators in Congress have proposed legislation that would require time spent in observation status to count as part of the three-day inpatient requirement. To read the full 25-page report, go to aarp.org and put the study’s title in the search box. Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Write to her in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 328536475, or send e-mail to columnreply@gmail. com. (c) 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

THE KITCHEN DIVA’S GIFT GUIDE
I
love testing new food products and kitchen appliances. I’ve selected two of my favorites from a new line of CrockPot appliances for this gift-giving guide. The Crock-Pot revolution started in August 1970 with a simple bean-cooker: a glazed brown crock liner, white steel housing and aluminum lid. By associating the crockery liner with its pot-like shape, out came the name Crock-Pot. This slow cooker introduced a new category of appliances and revolutionized the way Americans cooked for their families. Crock-Pot products are time-savers, energy-savers, space-savers and are reasonably priced. They’re the perfect gift and come in a variety of sizes and colors. I was amused to find that a recent holiday meal-preparation survey listed the inability to serve all of the food at the same temperature at the same time as the No. 1 fear of home cooks! I’ve often struggled to get a huge family holiday meal on the table. This year, my worries are over, thanks to The Crock-Pot Hook Up Connectable Entertaining System (MSRP: $39.99-$49.99), which completely replaces the old chafing dishes, sterno cans, tea-lights and buffettable clutter! The new system features individual slowcooker units that connect by plugging into each other to create an impressive entertaining spread that can be customized to suit groups of any size. Up to six units can hook up using a single outlet, and all may

My second gift choice from Crock-Pot is the new LunchCrock Food Warmer (MSRP: $24.99). It holds up to 20 ounces of food and warms while you work for delicious on-the-go meals that are ready when you are. Convenience food now can be as warm, comforting and flavorful as home cooking. This handy gadget heats low and slow to transform leftovers, soups, oatmeal and any number of favorites into meals away from home. My husband takes his lunch to work with him and often eats in the car while running errands. We were limited to what we could pack in his lunch bag until I discovered the LunchCrock. There’s a plug adapter in our car, so my husband can have a hot lunch whether he’s in the car or at his desk. Handling is easy thanks to a spillproof lid, cool-touch exterior and cord storage. The removable food-storage container and lid are dishwasher safe.

Shortly after the train was on its way, one of the women left her toilet and walked over to the toilet in which the men were hiding. She knocked on their door and said, “Ticket please.” We’re still trying to figure out why men think they are smarter than women.
