he days are getting colder, the nights are getting longer and the holiday season is upon us once again. You’re probably thinking of what you can do to pass the time cooped up in the house. Chances are, you’ve contemplated watching a movie or two. Why not? The nights are perfect for snuggling under a warm blanket with a hot cup of cocoa and watching your favorite Christmas films. With such a variety to choose from, you might find it difficult to narrow it down to just a few.

We at Snippetz feel your pain. There are so many great movies out there that celebrate this wonderful holiday, picking our favorites was quite a feat. In fact, we had to narrow the list down to just MY favorites because there was no way we’d all agree!

So here are my top Christmas movies of all time, in no particular order because it would be nearly impossible to rank them; that’s how good they are!

Not only is the tree Christmas tree he cuts down so massive it engulfs the family’s living room, but Clark’s goodfor-nothing cousin-in-law shows up in a camper, family in tow, to crash the holiday celebrations. Everything goes wrong, as it typically does for Clark and even though he manages to get his light display to work, he ends up with a “Jelly of the Month” membership from his boss, rather than his holiday bonus.

I’m watching this movie as I write this so I’m listing it at the top. How could you possibly NOT include the original animated version, narrated by Boris Karloff? The movie, based on the book by the legendary Dr. Seuss, features the grumpy Grinch who lives high on a mountain above Whoville.

He spends year after year listening to the Whos celebrate Christmas and finally decides he’s had enough. The Grinch turns his poor dog Max into a one-horned “reindeer” and fabricates a lousy excuse for a Santa Claus suit and sets off for the sleeping homes in Whoville to steal Christmas and “keep it from coming.”

Everything turns out fine for the Griswolds in the end but not without plenty of chaos including an out-of-control sledding trip and a brief kidnapping.

Everyone can feel much happier about their own family holiday mishaps after watching this one.

He thinks he has succeeded once he’s taken literally everything from each house in Whoville but the Christmas spirit in the townsfolk can’t be dampened and Christmas comes anyway.

The Grinch learns that “Christmas doesn’t come from a store;” that it actually means just a little bit more. And in the end, the Grinch surrenders himself to the Christmas spirit. Sheer animated perfection.

A CHRISTMAS STORY I couldn’t be happier that this one is shown for 24 hours straight during Christmastime! I could watch Ralph plot ways to secure a Red Ryder BB

The best part about this movie, in my humble opinion, is not so much his struggle to find a way to get what he wants but in watching his dysfunctional family get through the holidays. His dad wins “a major award” in the shape of a ghastly lamp that he insists must take center stage in the family’s front window. His long-suffering mother, who never manages to eat a hot meal, has to practically force-feed her youngest son Randy his food.

And in the end, after all the anticipation and breath-holding, Ralphie gets his BB gun and the holiday season winds down in an extremely relatable manner . . . minus the roast duck for Christmas dinner.

people, to me it does. My family went to see this movie in the theater on Christmas Eve the first year it was out.

I was 10 and I can still remember being amazed at the creativity and imagination put into making that movie.

Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King of Halloween Town, and his dream to bring his twisted version of Christmas to the world is by far one of the most unique ways to illustrate the holiday season. In fact, it’s become a cult classic so much so that people (like me) watch it year ‘round just to enjoy the fantastic visual effects of Tim Burton’s claymation genius.

THE MUPPETS CHRISTMAS CAROL I’m pretty sure Charles Dickens didn’t envision the Muppets playing the characters of his classic “A Christmas Carol� story. But he’s probably glad Jim Hensen made that call. Having a timeless story like that told in a way that is accessible to people of all ages makes important literature remain relevant.

What’s not to love about a grumpy old man being shown his past, present and future Christmases to help him realize what Christmas is truly about? It’s a great learning experience and when the Muppets are thrown in the mix to act as the harbingers of the lesson Mr. Ebenezer Scrooge is to learn, you have the trappings of a great holiday classic.

ELF Relatively new to the Christmas movie scene is the movie “Elf� starring former Saturday Night Live cast member Will Ferrell. This movie follows the adventures of human who was raised by Santa’s elves at the North Pole. Buddy the Elf thinks he’s an elf but being over

six feet tall, he finds it hard to fit into the elf lifestyle. He finds out the truth about himself and sets off on an expedition to find his real father.

It’s That Time...

The trek takes Buddy to New York where he has to learn to adjust to the cynical, not-so-Christmasy ways of his father and his father’s new family. In the end, Buddy actually convinces his family and all of New York, in fact, that Santa exists and that “the best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear.�

I am positive a certain friend of mine would disown me if I didn’t include this movie on my list but to be honest, I’ve only seen it once. I wrote about it last year for Snippetz and obviously had to watch it in order to do so. But I have to say, I really liked it.

George Bailey has had to give up his dreams in order to help others around him and he has finally had it. He is determined to commit suicide on Christmas Eve when his guardian angel intervenes to show him what his life has meant to the people of the small town of Bedford Falls. In the end, George realizes that it really is a wonderful life even if things don’t come wrapped up in a nice little package like you’d hope they would.

RESOLVE TO GET FIT WITH YOUR KIDS

T

his year, make sure your New Year’s fitness resolution includes your kids.

Doing so could make working out and losing weight a lot more fun, according to fitness expert Michael Berry.

Berry, who heads the Health and Exercise Science Department at Wake Forest University, said fitness with the kids must include more than a predictable schedule.

You must engage the kids and even make exercise a little unusual to get them excited about working out.

“If you say, we’re going to take the kids out for a walk this evening, most kids are going to say, ‘Wait, we have to leave the video games or television?’” Berry said. “Kids like to play games, they like to be engaged, so exercise needs to be something that is sports-oriented or game-oriented.”

Children need at least 60 minutes a day of physical activity, including musclestrengthening exercises, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Preven-

tion. With that goal in mind, Berry makes these suggestions for getting fit with the kids: 1. See the lights on foot. Around the holidays, there are plenty of interesting light displays to see in your neighborhood.

Or walk to pay a holiday visit to nearby friends.

2. Aim for two or three activities a week, which will help you reach your daily adult fitness goal of 30 minutes of moderate activity five times a week.

5. Check out local fitness attractions. Visit a rock-climbing gym or a trampoline place, for example.

10. Make dining out or after-dinner treats a physical activity. Walk to the restaurant or ice-cream shop from your home, if possible.

6. Make a fitness wish list with the kids.

Write down every physical activity they’d like to do, and let them choose at least twice a month.

11. Join a league -- kickball, basketball, soccer. They all offer opportunities for you and your kids to have fun getting fit.

7. Play like a kid. A half-hour of tag or kickball is good exercise for you and your children.

12. Check out guidelines and suggestions at the CDC website: http://www.cdc.gov/ physicalactivity/everyone/guidelines/children.html.

8. Use your gaming system to your advantage. Pick a high-energy physical activity that you like (the “Just Dance” games for Wii, for instance), and make it a family competition. When the kids get bored, change the game.

3. Walk to school. That burst of activity in the morning can change your day.

9. Take it outside. But a simple walk won’t cut it, Berry said. Go to a park or nature preserve and take a hike.

4. Replace pizza and a movie night with family fitness night at least once a month.

Get the kids excited about it.

No matter how you decide to get fit with your kids, make sure you keep it safe, Berry said. Drink plenty of water while exercising, follow the rules of the fitness attractions you visit, and keep children’s strength training to low or moderate resistance (like monkey bars). It was very contagious and a good percentage of the schoolchildren had it, although none of my family members at home caught it from us.

I know jaundice in itself is not a disease. Could we have had hepatitis? Are there any long-term effects from it? -A.P. ANSWER: It does indeed sound like hepatitis.

The most common form of contagious hepatitis is called hepatitis A. It comes from contaminated food or water, but it

Unfortunately, silence is not easy to find, what with several phones in every home, TVs in every room, children, coworkers, machinery, barking dogs, etc.

Perhaps the reason it is so difficult to find a place of silence is because of the high value of a little peace and quiet. You see, valuable things are always scarce, and silence can be very valuable.

Here are four reasons that silence is valuable: First of all, silence rests the mind. The constant noise of life tires the brain and weakens its ability to do the work it is designed to do. Silence renews and refreshes the brain for more productive, creative labor.

- Some of you wear a new kind of head jewelry called “Bluetooth Technology” or I-pods that pipe noise directly into your head.

Second, silence improves conversation. We’ve all been around someone who just plain flat talks too much, who wears us out with their words. Someone once said, “He had occasional flashes of silence that made his conversation perfectly delightful.” The best conversationalists are those who know how to listen.

- Most stores play “background” music and some even broadcast extra-loud advertisements on strategically placed TVs throughout their stores.

Silence settles arguments. You can stop a raucous argument or quiet down an angry person with silence. “Silence” said Josh Billings, “is one of the hardest arguments to refute.”

- Now farmers no longer have to plow in silence because their tractors come equipped with quality sound systems.

And last, silence preserves integrity.

One hundred years before the birth of Christ a writer penned, “I have often regretted my speech, never my silence.”* We have all said at one time or another, “I wish I would have just kept my big mouth shut.” Mark Twain said it best, “Tis better to be silent and thought a fool, than to speak up and remove all doubt.”

We may breathlessly sing, “Silent night”, but we live in the noisiest society in history. So I’m calling for a little silence, a little peace and quiet, an uninterrupted hour or two with absolutely no noise. But I’m not only calling for it, I’m seeking it, I’m trying to create it.

Yesterday the wife went to the Mall which meant the house was going to be empty for at least two hours. “Ahhh… some peace and quiet”, I thought as I made my way to my favorite recliner and settled down for an uninterrupted hour of silence. I kicked the footrest out so I could lie nearly prostrate in the plush comfort of the chair. It took a few minutes to get comfortable and settle in

Nick-Snips TRADITIONS AND TRADEMARKS

I

t’s been a whole year now. Yes, that’s right; you’ve been reading an entire year of the random banter better known as Nick Snips. What a year it’s been. There was a blackout at the Super Bowl. There were political mishaps and miracles; world tragedies and triumphs. There was the meteoric rise of Miley Cyrus. 2013 brought a tornado of new ideas. The year also saw us bid farewell to old memories and ways of life. While Nick Snips came to fruition, another former stepping stone was stomped. So, quickly, I’ll tell you the story of this young writer’s journey to the middle.

If you recall, Nick Snips was not my first venture into a journalistic career at the vivacious paper-magazine, Snippetz. No, as a younger man I found myself writing a glorified advertisement every week for a little local establishment known as Pinz Bowling Center (I clearly have a thing for companies that end in the letter ‘z’).

Many of you probably remember Pinz for its handsome brown-haired Kitchen and Front Desk worker (wink). Some of you may better remember it because four times a month you found yourself reading a misleading article that eventually traveled down a path of shameless advertising for bowling leagues, pizza, and bar parties. It was a fun time writing those articles. But eventually, all good things come to an end.

Fortunately for aspiring young writers in Monument, Colorado – there’s always something on the horizon when you work for a charming Chicago-bred newspaper mogul who adores your special brand of charm. So in the end, I was able to continue writing my articles with more freedom than ever. I mean, have you ever read a Nick Snips? Over half of them literally have nothing to do with your day to day life. It’s fantastic.

I’m getting to a point here, I swear. The thing is, I miss something about those Pinz’ articles. Every year I had a holiday party or Christmas special to promote.

So, for those couple of years, I wrote a poem the week of Christmas. It was from Pinz to you; like a special little stocking stuffer, guaranteed every year to whiten your smile. I usually based it on a poem

that was already written, changing rhymes here and there to apply especially to the subject at hand.

Bottom line – while some things have to change with the pass of the holidays and the turning of the year, there’s some traditions you should never let go of; like your Christmas tree. Or perhaps a special dish your grandma makes. Or, for a better example, my awesome holiday poem! So here it is, a brand new annual poem, from me to you:

he U.S. Senate has a Special Committee on Aging, as well as an Aging Fraud Hotline.

While it handles any type of complaint about fraud against a senior, it’s been especially busy lately because of Obamacare, also known as Affordable Care Act. The scammers are out there, and they’re targeting seniors.

The committee’s new press release lists some tricks scammers might use to cheat you: • If you have Medicare, you don’t need to buy Obamacare, period. If someone tries to sell you a policy knowing you receive Medicare, it’s illegal.

• The scammers will try to get you to disclose personal information, such as your Medicare or Social Security number, or your bank account number.

With even some of that information, your identity can be compromised and your savings stolen.

• Scammers can show up at your door, or might phone you or send you email.

• Hang up on anyone who calls and says they’re from Social Security or Medicare. They will never call you, unless you’ve made arrangements with them in advance.

• Medicare open enrollment ended on Dec. 7, but scammers likely will say that “something” went wrong with your enrollment information, and they need to get it again from you.

The Aging Fraud Hotline can help with any number of issues related to fraud against seniors: identity theft, Medicare, retirement savings, phone scams, Social Security and more. If you need to file a complaint, call it toll-free at 1-855-303-9470. There’s also a mail form on its website at www.aging.senate.gov. Click on the Contact link and fill in the blanks.

oliday activity and excitement tend to make people less careful at a time when they should be even more cautious. In the United States, there are an estimated 47,000 fires every holiday season that claim more than 500 lives a year.

The Hearst Burn Center at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center has joined with the New York City Fire Department to offer these special tips for the holiday season: • Trees: One in every 22 home fires caused by a Christmas tree results in death. Remember that trees that are cut early in the season quickly dry out to become fire hazards, so make sure to keep them wellwatered. Never put a tree in front of an exit, and always make sure it is at least 3 feet from any heat source such as a fireplace, space heater, candle or radiator.

--Candles: The chance of having a candle fire quadruples during the holiday season.

Never leave religious, or any, candles burning unattended. Make sure candles are placed at least 4 feet from curtains, holiday decorations and Christmas trees.

• Decorations: Never decorate your holiday tree with candles, even if you don’t intend to light them. Keep all decorations away from heat sources such as space heaters, candles, fireplaces and radiators and, when possible, use fire-retardant decora-

tions.

• Lights: Only buy holiday lights that have been inspected and approved by the Underwriters Laboratory (UL). Inspect and test lights each year. Unplug the lights when going to sleep or leaving your home.

• Electricity and Electrical Wires: Never leave holiday lights on when you leave the house. If a wire should short, you might return to find your home on fire! Make sure not to overload outlets; limit the use of extension cords to short periods of time; and use a surge protector when plugging in holiday lights and decorations.

• Fireplaces: Never place a Christmas tree near a fireplace. If there is no other place to put it, do not use the fireplace until after the tree has been removed and the needles have been cleaned up. Use a screen over the fireplace to prevent embers from escaping.

Keep small children at least 3 feet from the fireplace area.

• Holiday Cooking: Create a 3-foot zone of safety around the stove, oven and cooking areas to ensure that children and other adults will stay clear of pot handles, oven doors and open burners on the stove. When cooking, wear short sleeves and/or tightfitting clothing to prevent them from getting caught in a flame on the stove; and turn pot handles inward on the stove.

y father, Howard, was in the Air Force, and my mother, Angeline, was a homemaker. They didn’t have a lot of money to buy Christmas presents for my three siblings and me.

One thing they did give us was lots of love, great food and faith in God and in the future, no matter how bleak things might look in the present. The beauty of my childhood is that I never knew that we didn’t have much money.

When I became an adult, I made a personal decision to accept Jesus Christ and become a Christian. My decision has beautifully

and wonderfully shaped my life and my faith. It takes a great faith to carry on in the midst of the challenges that we all face day in and day out. Unlike earthly things, which become worn and depleted when used time after time, faith becomes even stronger and more abundant the more it’s used.

I often hear about people “losing faith.” If

I have great faith in the future and in the ability of the American people to persevere in these difficult times. We must love our country and hold fast to the faith and the moral principles America was founded upon. No matter what your circumstances might be, hold on to hope, preserve and cherish your family’s heritage and memo-

ries, and most importantly in these difficult times, keep the faith.

While the holidays pose their own special set of personal and financial challenges, it’s also a time to appreciate and treasure the priceless things in our lives -- love, faith and family. While I live my life in a way that celebrates Christ everyday, Christmas is a special time and one of my favorite holidays.

Some of my best Christmas memories are linked to the dishes my mother made during the holidays. This recipe for my Mom’s Butter Cookies is a simple dessert from my childhood. Making and sharing these delicious cookies is almost as fun as eating them!

CHRISTMAS CLOSURE AND THE PROMISE OF A NEW YEAR

I

n my life I have found that the few days between Christmas and New Year’s Day bring quietness and a time of peace and comfort. The hassle and hustle of the holiday season is at an end. The cookies and treats are mostly gone. The decorations around the house are looking a little tired. And the gifts have all been put away. These days bring for me both closure and excitement – the ending to the past year and the promises of the new.

I like to spend some of this time with myself, and review my decisions over the past year – especially my financial decisions. What were the choices I made, why did I make them and how did they turn out? Some, of course, were quite successful. Others were, well, not so bright. Yes, even after all these years I still make some pretty good mistakes when it comes to my personal finances.

Over the years I have found, however, the hours that I have spent in reflection and review have been an incredible learning experience and many times a humbling one.

There are a number of reports I put

together to help me with my review.

Among them is my personal balance sheet. In its simplest form my balance sheet lists my assets – all that I have, and from that is subtracted my liabilities – all that I owe. The resulting number is my net worth. Fortunately I have been blessed and, over time, I have seen my net worth rise, which is a good thing. It means that I have assets that are increasing in value and debt that is under control. It also provides a good indication that I am on track for achieving my financial goals.

Another report is my cash flow statement, which tracks my sources and uses of income – how much money did I earn and what did I do with it?

The cash flow statement lays it all out there in black and white. It is the summation of the financial decisions I have made, both good and bad. By comparing it with statements from years past I can identify trends and changes in my spending habits, investing and giving as well as my earning power. From there I can decide if that is where I want to be using my earnings and make changes if it’s not.

I am also formalize (meaning writing it down) my spending plan for the new year. With this I will be projecting my income and my expenses for the year and developing a monthly budget. I am striving to live on 70% of my income.

That leaves 10% for giving, 10% to invest, and 10% to pay down debt. The operative word here is striving, that is my goal. I must admit I have a ways to go. It has been said that success is found not in the destination but in the

journey. If that is true, I have been blessed with great success!

We are all called to be good stewards and use the gifts that God has provided us wisely. I have found that taking the time to review my financial choices as a steward of God’s blessings, brings with it a sense of peace. Our finances are what they are. We only have control over so much. The rest we must accept.

By bringing Christ to the center of my financial life I have found real change.

The numbers have remained the same, but I have change and with that change has come a sense of gratitude, thanksgiving and praise.

Might I suggest, that before the new year is upon us, that you make some time to reflect on your own financial life. Take a look at how you managed your finances over the last year and set a plan with purpose for the coming year.

A question worth asking is: have I been the good steward with the gifts God has bestowed and will I be this year?
