“A lot of my friends have tattoos; I realized that it’s not only just a part of pop culture but a bit of a map on someone’s body which says something about people. A part of their life, like an armor or a crest.” – Christian Louboutin, French footwear designer

ody modification of one type or another is more common than ever. People boast tattoos and piercings and such methods of personal expression have become almost main stream. While not everyone has jumped on the “body-modding” bandwagon, cultures around the globe have incorporated similar traditions into their everyday practices for literally thousands of years. And naturally, Snippetz became curious. What’s the history of body art and modification? While current trends may appear somewhat abstract or even absurd, ancient societies have long used these trends to indicate wealth, beauty and status. And as always, we’ve compiled some historical information to give you some insight into the practice of body modification.

The Maori culture of New Zealand practiced the art of tattooing but focused on the head and face since that was considered the most important part of the body. The tattoos were tapped into the skin using chiseled bone and then a soot-based pigment was rubbed into the wounds. Maori women often had tattoos that centered around their mouths and on their chins which they maintained effectively kept their skin from wrinkling, keeping them younglooking much longer. Women of this tribe performed this practice as recently as the 1970s.
It’s true that for thousands of years, people have permanently marked their bodies with tattoos. This trend is most definitely not a new one. In ancient times, these drawings and designs always had special meaning for the wearer, whether it be to declare their love of another, to show their faith in a religion or even to punish them for a crime they had committed. In fact, the “Iceman” mummy, found in 1991 in the area of the Italian-Austrian border had tattooed dots and small crosses adorning his lower spine and right knee and ankle joints. And he was carbon-dated at being around 5,200 years old.
SCARIFICATION Certain skin types and tones, especially darker ones, tend not to take the colored ink used in tattoos and thus, a related technique emerged called scarification. In this method, small incisions are made in the skin and the skin is lifted slightly to make space for sand or ash to be placed underneath the skin. Patterns are created in this method and when the wounds have healed, raised scars are left behind.

As mentioned above, tattoos served as designs denoting status, wealth, religious affiliation and other important criteria. But it is also believed that tattoos functioned in a therapeutic role. This idea is strongly supported by the distribution and pattern of tattoos found on ancient Egyptian women who often had them focused around their abdomen and on top of their thighs and breasts. The pattern often resembled a net and is believed to

paste made from the leaves of the henna plant which are dried and crushed. The paste stains the skin leaving behind an orange-brown color. When applied to the palms and soles of the feet, the stain takes on a dark reddishbrown because the skin in these areas is the thickest and contains the most keratin. Henna designs usually last from one to four weeks. Henna is mostly used for special occasions in Africa, Pakistan, India and other parts of the Middle East. Most popular among the traditional uses is the celebration of the Mehndi (henna) Night which occurs prior to a wedding. The bride, her family and friends gather to plays games, listen to music and dance while the bride receives extensive henna patterns on her hands and feet. The ritual can take hours and often requires the work of multiple henna artists. One major advantage of receiving the henna tattoos is that the bride doesn’t have to do any housework while the henna stains are visible. Why didn’t I know about this tradition when I got married?

golden coils (they look like individual rings but truly aren’t) as early as five years old. It is often thought that the rings stretch out the woman’s neck but in reality, the rings push down on her collarbones, altering the angle of her shoulders, making her neck appear longer. The tradition of wearing the neck rings, which can reach a size of twenty turns, is in keeping with the ideal that beauty can be found in an elongated neck. The explorer Marco Polo was the first to describe this neck elongation practice in the 1300s.
FOOT BINDING Foot binding as a form of body modification dates back to ancient China, most likely to the Song dynasty. The practice involves binding a young girl’s feet to prevent growth so they remain tiny and delicate. The ideal foot size was considered to be about four inches and women who endured this painful practice are said to have “lotus feet.” Foot binding was generally done by the upper class because it was completely impractical for a working-class family to basically disable one of their family members. The practice has essentially died, although there are still a few women left with “lotus feet.”
NOSE PLUGS This practice can be attributed almost exclusively to the Apatani tribe in the district of Arunachal Pradesh, India. Women typically receive facial tattoos and nose plugs when they are very young and are expected to wear the plugs for the rest of their lives. Since the tribe does not keep any written records, it has been hypothesized that
the nose plug practice was created in order to make the women unattractive to neighboring tribes. Nose plugs are rapidly losing popularity even though the tradition dates back hundreds of years.

LIP PLATES
NOT ONE WILL OR EXPENSIVE LIVING TRUST CAN COME ANYWHERE CLOSE TO LEAVING YOUR HOME AND ESTATE AS SIMPLY, QUICKLY AND AFFORDABLY AS COLORADO LAW ALLOWS IN 2014!
Lip plates are practiced exclusively by the Mursi, Chai and Tirma tribes of Africa although it used to be much more widespread. Beginning at the age of 15 or 16, young women begin stretching out their lower lip with a series of plates that increase in diameter. Most women will endure the practice until their lip has stretched to hold a 12-centimeter plate although some can handle plates even larger than that. While it is speculated that the purpose of the plate is to signify a rite of passage, others believe wearing a large plate is a beauty standard within the tribes.
WHY NOT? Because under Colorado law, a Will requires probate and an expensive Living Trust isn’t required to avoid probate. You can save the $1,000s in legal fees and months or years of legal hassle Wills and Trusts can require by using a simple and affordable Colorado Smart Estate Plan. It allows most estates to go to loved ones in just days for only $100s.

Colorado Wills are always free so the state doesn’t decide who receives your estate.
• Some evidence points to the use of henna for temporary tattooing as early as the 7th millennium B.C.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE? By Nick Yanez
F
or years, women and men have tried to analyze each other. Some say we’re all wasting our time. We simply can’t understand the opposite sex; we weren’t meant to. After all, there must be a reason we were built so differently. Then there are those who claim there is no difference, really. Obviously our physical differences cannot be denied. But other than that, some folks believe each individual is unique, and that’s all there is to it. There are no real ties between how certain people act based on their gender, unless they are slaves to the media and shamelessly force themselves into stereotypical gender roles. I’m more of the belief personally, that there are indeed differences based on gender. But I’m more into the small stuff. For example – men like sandwiches more than women. It’s an age old typecast. But is has to be true! Did you know that over 50% of Subway customers are males? How’s that huge dose of evidence for you? Need more? Here’s a story that’ll blow your tomatoes off… We’ve all had a plane delayed before. It is common practice at airports to see a takeoff pushed back by several hours. It happens every day. One time, I was stuck at a Las Vegas airport, in the plane, for a whopping 5-hours because the President was landing. Brutal timing. A couple of weeks ago, New York bound passengers were struck with a similar instance of bad luck. Suffice to say, they’re reason for being delayed was not nearly as good as mine had been. Set for takeoff in Pakistan, passengers of flight 711 from Lahore to New York had an unexpected delay. They were not given a reason, but assumed that it would be a short hiccup on their long
trip home. Turns out, 2 ½ hours later, that was not the case. The worst part: The flight was delayed because Flight Captain Noushad demanded a sandwich be delivered to him from a 5-star hotel. When told that the sandwich could take over two hours to arrive, the Captain reportedly stated he, “needed sandwiches at all costs”. What an amazing line! I mean needing “the cure”, “victory”, or “survival” are all acceptable quotes when followed by the phrase “at all costs”. Never have I heard the word sandwich inserted in that statement. But alas, Captain Noushad has just recently entered my life (he could have many more classic lines to come) Then, out of nowhere, a Pakistani newspaper decided to expose the story to the world. Astonishingly, that resulted in Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) to come under public fire. I mean, what’s the problem? Clearly the guy needed a 5-star hotel quality sandwich. Oh, that’s right. The needs of Captain Noushad shouldn’t come before hundreds of passengers who paid a ton of money to leave on time that morning. My bad. When questioned about the incident, PIA Spokesman Mashhood Tajwar said in a statement, “management had taken a serious notice of the delay of an international flight”. They are fully investigating it to this day. So, still don’t believe in the inherent difference between men and women? Clearly only a man was capable of delaying this flight for over two hours for a sandwich. A woman pilot would have never committed such a crime! No, obviously had this been a woman, the delay would have been over a Starbucks Latte, or Sushi. That my dear readers, is the difference. Feel free to send Nick an email anytime about his weekly column, or any leads you have for underreported stories he could write about, to NickSnipsMail@ Gmail.com

YOU CAN CREATE A BETTER AND BRIGHTER FUTURE

By Dr. Ron Ross
ou can create a better and brighter future because your view of your future has way more power than the memories of your past. It may be true that you were teased in the ďŹ fth grade or that your mother loved your sister more than you or that your father abandoned you or that your 9th grade math teacher called you stupid or that you lived on the wrong side of the tracks or even that you suffered serious traumatic events in your life such as sexual or physical abuse. Each of those kinds of events is painful and some are life altering. Over time they have accumulated deep within your soul to make you what and who you are today. However, you should never allow what happened to you in the past determine your future. Here’s why: you have been created with the God-like gift of creativity. Did you know that human beings are the only creatures on earth that can take what is and make it into something completely different? We can take a plant and turn it into a medicine. We can take sand and turn it into glass or corn and turn it into gasoline. We can even take a single harmless invisible atom and turn it into a dangerous bomb.
Let me repeat a phrase from the previous paragraph because it is so important: you can take what is and make it into something completely different.

So, what does your future look like? Bright? Dim? Cloudy? Sunny? Happy? Sad? Don’t answer me through they eyes of some national economic indicators. Don’t answer me through the colored lenses of your past mistakes. Answer me instead through the eyes of your heart, through the hopes and dreams you have long held. DeďŹ ne your future as you want it to be. You will ďŹ nd the majority of solutions to your problems and the healing of your hurts happen in your todays and in your tomorrows, not in your yesterdays. I truly believe that if you deďŹ ne your future ďŹ rst and go to work to make it happen, you will be better equipped to conquer the demons of your past. When you work on your future you don’t have time to rehearse the screw-ups, disappointments and insults of your past. The power of your vision for your future will enable you to take what is and make it into something completely different.

with COPD who have many flareups of their illness. A flare-up makes breathing exceedingly difficult and sometimes requires hospitalization to control. Flare-ups add to the destruction of normal lung tissue. Viruses are often the cause. However, the inflamed and mucus-filled airways also are hosts to many bacteria, whose numbers rise during a flare-up. They make a contribution to symptoms and lung destruction.
ANTIBIOTIC TREATMENT HELPS SOME WITH COPD DEAR DR. DONOHUE: On the local news, they were talking to a doctor about using an antibiotic for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, COPD. The name of the drug is azithromycin. What do you know about this, and what is your opinion? -- D.L. ANSWER: COPD encompasses two lung diseases, emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Emphysema is destruction of the millions of tiny air sacs in the lungs. Through those structures oxygen passes into the blood, and carbon dioxide passes out of it. Severe shortness of breath on slight physical activity is the hallmark of emphysema. Chronic bronchitis is inflammation of the airways, the bronchi. Along with inflammation, the airways fill with thick mucus. A constant cough is the main sign of chronic bronchitis. Both conditions usually exist together. Azithromycin, the antibiotic you mentioned, has been suggested as a daily treatment at a reduced dose for those

eceipts and recordkeeping are common concerns. In the absence of proof, the IRS and the Tax Court will allow some estimation but it is weighed heavily against the taxpayer. Sounds like fun. Here’s the skinny: you need a record showing the business nature and you need documentary evidence showing that you paid the amount, who you paid it to, and the date. A record is a logbook, account book, journal, or something similar (smartphone apps).
documentary evidence must show the amount, date, place and the record must show the nature of the expense. Myth Buster: Simply keeping track of your expenditures in your iPhone, Quick-
Also, documentary evidence is not required for items under $75, even if they collectively exceed $75. However, a record in most cases will be required by the IRS in the event your tax return is examined. Please understand that keeping all receipts is still the best procedure for minimizing tax complications regardless

Documentary evidence sounds fancy but it is simply receipts, canceled checks, bills, invoices, credit card statements, bank statements (for electronic funds transfer). What does all this mean? If you have a receipt, you should jot down what the purchase was for. If you have a credit card statement, you should circle the amount, and make a note what the purchase was for. If you make payments in cash, you should get a dated and signed receipt showing the amount and the reason for the payment. Essentially your

LIVING GOD’S GIFTS bringing Christ into your financial life
by Chuck Maher, CFP®
...BRING CHRIST INTO OUR FINANCIAL LIVES
CELEBRATING GOD’S GIFTS
E
ach of us is called to live life as a celebration of God’s gifts. That includes our financial lives. What happens when our finances reflect our beliefs? What happens if we chose to change? Here are ten resolutions for the New Year that financial can make a difference. Please feel free to adopt any or all if you choose. Pray in gratitude for the multitude of blessings that God has bestowed upon us, the courage to humbly accept those gifts and to recognize the responsibilities they bring into our lives. Look at your work not as a job but as a vocation. It makes no difference if you are the night clerk at a convenience store or the CEO of a major corporation. Can those who work with you, those you service see the hand of God in what you do? Live below your means. Look back over the last year. Instead of living large, live well, well within your means. I would suggest a lifestyle target of 70% of your income. Pay down debt. The stress and financial consequences of too much debt takes far too much life out of our lives. Create a plan to eliminate all your debt over the next five years, excluding your mortgage, and commit to it. Prepare for your family. So many families have lost so much when the money stopped. Loss of job, extended illnesses, disability, and death cause great financial hardships. Hardships that oftentimes can be avoided. Create an emergency fund; make sure you have adequate insurance so that the money is there when you cannot provide it. Give with purpose. Christ called us to feed the hungry, clothe the naked and provide shelter for the homeless. Giving should be more than an afterthought. Make the time to sit down with your spouse, your family and with God. Discuss how you give, why you give and when you give. Then develop a plan for giving that defines your values and supports your beliefs. Put up for the future. As Joseph told Pharaoh, put up from today’s plenty for tomorrow’s needs. I do not know what
your tomorrow’s needs are, but I do know that tomorrow is coming. Make a commitment to save a part of all that you earn; 10% is a good starting point, 15% is even better. Invest with faith. Should we as Christians profit from abortion? What about pornography? Should we support antifamily values? I think all of us would answer no. Yet, when we look at many of the investments we own that is exactly where the money is being made. Take the time to learn how companies you invest in earn their money and what they do with their profits. Eliminate those that clearly compromise our beliefs and values.

Create a legacy. Far too often, I have found that when someone dies suddenly, in addition, to the pain and grief the family must bear, they must also deal with a financial mess. Make sure that your estate is in order. Take the time to visit with a good estate planning attorney who understands your goals and purposes. But don’t stop there. Make sure that you are passing on what is truly important, your values, your beliefs, your traditions and your faith. Pray. When it comes to our financial lives there are so many variables over which we have little control. We can only do what we can do. The rest we must place in the hands of God. Pray asking God for the guidance and the courage to use His blessings and gifts wisely, according to His will and as a testimony to Christ’s presence in our lives. Will living our faith change the world? I do not know, but it just might. If more Christians brought Christ to the center of their financial lives, who knows what could happen? “Well done! You are an industrious and reliable servant … Come, share your master’s joy!” Matthew 25:21 Lisa Welch Stevens Attorney at Law, P.C.
