f you’ve tuned in to your favorite show on T.V. lately, you’ve probably seen commercials for brain-training games online that claim to boost your intelligence and help you exercise your brain. As we all know, sometimes commercials stretch the truth a bit to get people to buy their products and it’s safe to say that online brain-training companies are not the exception. But just what exactly do these brain-training sites DO? Can you spend a few minutes each day playing the games they offer and walk away as the next Albert Einstein? Snippetz just had to know: what’s the deal behind all these mind games? So we looked into it to see what we could find . . . and here are the results!

Neuroplasticity may sound like a complicated scientific concept but in reality, it’s fairly simple. It means the brain’s ability to reorganize itself, to reframe a situation or scenario, to think outside the box. It’s the brain’s ability to adapt to changes and make the best of what it has to work with. For example, if one part of the brain is damaged, another part may take over some of the functions controlled by the damaged portion. By reorganizing and forming new connections between intact neurons, the brain is able to compensate for portion that’s not pulling its weight, so to speak. The brain games you find online or perhaps might even watch on the National Geographic Channel television show “Brain Games” bank on the idea of neuroplasticity. By presenting you with scenarios that might require you to think in a way you might not typically think, your brain is forming new connections in order to reach a desired answer as quickly as possible. Thus, you’re “exercising” your brain.

CHICKEN EATER

• Fit Brains – claims to have the highest quality brain-training games on the Internet. The company’s scientific efforts are led by Dr. Paul Nussbaum, a clinical neuropsychologist and national leader in “Brain Health.” The games on this site come in several forms, including Uber Brain, the company’s “mental cross-trainer.” The site states that their brand of brain-training is “an effective way to build cognitive reserve and increase brain performance.”

Another important question is, do the tests really measure intelligence? One game is based on a psychological test called the Stroup test. The test involves identifying the color of a word as quickly as possible. The hitch is that the word is the name of a color that differs from the color in which it’s printed. For example, the word “blue” would show up in red. The brain has trouble because of the conflicting information it receives from what it’s reading and what color it’s seeing. The Stroup test can be very informative of a person’s processing abili-

ties but a person can cheat to beat it, which naturally doesn’t help measure their processing abilities at all. In fact, I found a way to cheat the test in college. I had already learned about it in another class so when a different psychology teacher asked me to demonstrate the test, I unfocused my eyes so I wasn’t able to read the word, only see the color. I passed the test with flying colors (no pun intended) and dumbfounded my poor professor, who also happened to be in his first year of teaching at the college. I don’t recommend this to anyone else because cheating is bad, but as you can see, there are ways to fool some of the tests that are supposed to measure your intelligence.

THE REAL WORLD IS OVERRATED Regardless of how well or poorly you may do on a test like the Stroup test, how can you apply something like that to a real-world situation? I don’t often find myself confronted with the Stroup test in my everyday dealings. In fact, research has often shown that brain-training is great for getting better at the tests with which you are presented but that there isn’t a significant benefit to a generally healthy adult who embarks on brain-training exercises.

IT ALL COMES DOWN TO THE NUMBERS

719.963.7438

Companies like Lumosity, Jungle Memory, Brain Metrix and others have helped create a multi-million dollar industry of brain training. And those people who are literally buying into the idea of increased mental abilities are making it that way. It’s true that some brain-training exercises on some sites are free but some sites require a monetary commitment to gain full access to the games they offer. For example, Lumosity charges $14.95 per month for full access to their site. If you choose a year-long commitment with them, the rate drops to $6.95 per month and a two-year commitment brings the rate down to $4.99 per month. If you want unlimited access for your entire life, you can opt to make a one-time payment of $299.95.

NOT ONE WILL OR EXPENSIVE LIVING TRUST CAN COME ANYWHERE CLOSE TO LEAVING YOUR HOME AND ESTATE AS SIMPLY, QUICKLY AND AFFORDABLY AS COLORADO LAW ALLOWS IN 2014! WHY NOT? Because under Colorado law, a Will requires probate and an expensive Living Trust isn’t required to avoid probate. You can save the $1,000s in legal fees and months or years of legal hassle Wills and Trusts can require by using a simple and affordable Colorado Smart Estate Plan. It allows most estates to go to loved ones in just days for only $100s.

Since there’s no indication that these sites can actually improve your mental capabilities, it might be better to just buy a video game console instead. Why? Research has shown that people who play video games have more short-term memory abilities and increased reasoning skills. And all these years, we thought video games were supposed to rot our brains when we all should’ve been playing them this entire time! Who knew?

Nick-Snips

SUPER POWERS IN A BOTTLE By Nick Yanez

I

t’s pretty common knowledge at this point that we only use ten percent of our brain. This has always meant that we are capable of so much more. For every amazing feat our species has accomplished; an even more incredible act is possible. Take our physical bodies for example. It seems like every week professional athletes around the globe are shattering past world records. This is because our bodies have never reached their full potential. We, as a living animal, are constantly evolving; we’re bigger and stronger than ever before. What if our brains evolved over time like that? I mean, sure we continue to advance in technology by the day. That’s not due to our brain capabilities increasing though. Our progress in electronics and medicine has more to do with discoveries over time than actual brain power. But what if we could start to use just eleven percent of our brain, or even twelve? We would have the potential to cure cancer, sleep soundly, and live to 200-years-old in no time. Our species would advance so quickly, it would start to scare even the youth. Now what if I told you, because of recent medical discoveries, this was totally feasible in the next couple of years? Crazy, right? Medical researchers at Harvard have made an astounding discovery in the last couple of weeks. It turns out that giving a patient a medicine named Valproic Acid could possibly allow adults to pick up new skills at the same rate that children do! This amazing breakthrough could quite literally change the world overnight. The speculation started when Takao Hensch, a professor of molecular and cellular Biology at Harvard University followed through with an experiment. Hensch separated an assembly of volunteers into two groups. To one group, he gave daily doses of Valproic

Acid for two weeks. He other group received placebos. Throughout the two weeks, the professor had both groups take the same online test. It was an ear training exercise to help train participants to better identify different tones and notes. Basically, the program was teaching users to have perfect pitch. This was indeed a difficult learning task – it’s no easy task learning to have perfect pitch. In fact, I’d estimate 90% of professional musicians in the world aren’t blessed with such a skill. I say blessed because, up until this point, you are either born with perfect pitch or you are not. It’s not something people learn. Despite that, the group that was given the regular doses of Valproic Acid did very well on the tests. So well, that a few of the members actually acquired perfect pitch by the end of the two weeks. Prior to this experiment – there are no known reports of anyone ever learning perfect pitch. Perhaps it’s a miracle. Or maybe, as some skeptics would point out, these people already had perfect pitch; they just never realized it until now. Regardless, it opens up amazing possibilities. If further research proves that the Valproic Acid was responsible for the advanced learning of large group of human beings our possibilities become literally endless. Remember when your mother said you could be anything you wanted to be as long as you put your mind to it? Parents in a few short years could say that and actually mean it. Of course, this little dose of invincibility wouldn’t come without obstacles. The drug is currently used to treat patients who suffer from seizures or bipolar disorder. It can cause liver damage, extreme drossiness, hair loss, and tremor. That being said, tens of thousands of Americans take Valproic Acid now, without any serious side effects. Can we all agree this potential super power juice is worth looking into? Feel free to send Nick an email anytime about his weekly column, or any leads you have for underreported stories he could write about, to NickSnipsMail@ Gmail.com

DONOHUE: Just below my armpit I have a small, red bump. It’s not tender, even if I push on it. I know it’s been there for many years, but I can’t tell you how many, maybe forever. What could it be? -- D.A.

URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS DIFFER DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My mother was discharged from the hospital this past week. She was admitted for a urinary tract infection. She has had many urinary tract infections in the past, and they were all treated as an outpatient. Why was hospitalization needed this time? -- J.J. ANSWER: The term “urinary tract” covers a considerable amount of ground. The kidneys, the ureters (the tubes that carry urine to the bladder), the urinary bladder and the tube that drains it -- the urethra -are the four parts of the urinary tract. Your mother’s past urinary tract infections most likely were bladder infections. The official name for those infections is cystitis. People usually are treated for cystitis as outpatients. Kidney infections, on the other hand, are much more serious, much more difficult to treat and carry with them the possibility of permanent damage. These infections most often are treated with intravenous antibiotics in the hospital. Such infections have the name pyelonephritis (PIE-uh-low-neffRIGHT-iss). Bladder infections make a person uncomfortable, require frequent urination and might induce a slight rise in body temperature. With a kidney infection, people take to their bed, have a high temperature, often develop shaking chills, and suffer flank pain. This is the kind of urinary tract infection you mother recently had. The booklet on urinary tract infections provides the details of these illnesses, which are more common in women than men.

About 1 percent of the population has one or more extra nipples. Since it’s been there for so long and since it hasn’t caused any trouble, you don’t have to rush to a doctor. EXERCISE OFFERS SOME SURPRISING BENEFITS

J

ust in time for New Year’s resolutions come multiple studies about the surprising benefits of exercise. One recent study even concludes that in some cases, exercise is more effective than prescription drugs. In a U.K. study reported in the British Journal of Medicine, researches scoured the results of hundreds of controlled trials to compare the benefits of exercise versus drugs. This was no small review: They considered the information on more than 300,000 patients. Surprisingly, in diabetes and coronary heart disease, drugs and exercise produced the same results. Patients who’d had a stroke and were in rehab actually fared better on exercise than on drugs. In a combination of a dozen other studies, researchers verified that physical exercise lowers blood pres-

sure. Specifically, four hours of exercise per week correlated to nearly a 20 percent lower incidence of high blood pressure. Exercising one to three hours per week lowered that level to 11 percent. Being physically active on the job, however, did not lower high blood pressure, leading one researcher to comment that health guidelines don’t distinguish between work and leisure activities, but they should. In yet another study, researchers determined that those who have dementia will think more clearly as a result of exercise. If a dementia patient lives at home, caregivers were encouraged to find exercise programs in the community. Dementia patients in care facilities also should be offered exercise programs. In yet another study of 16 trials, exercise improved cognitive function in patients with varying levels of dementia.

The Fly was another dance introduced by his songs, after his success with the Twist and the Limbo. 3. WHY KEEP TAX RECORDS BESIDES RECEIPTS?

O

ther than the obvious charitable contribution or medical receipt, there are other tax related records that need to be kept.

buys stock through an employee stock purchase program, holds on to it for twenty years, retires, moves the stock into another account, and then sells it. Without historical cost or purchase information, the gains and subsequent

taxes are impossible to accurately compute. In the past we’ve reconstructed cost information through Yahoo! Finance, which works most of the time, but good recordkeeping can prevent this exercise

your property basis (cost) and can reduce your tax consequence. Of course, you get a big exemption for the sale of your primary residence, but rental properties and other real estate investments don’t enjoy this exemption. Bummer.

Homes and other real estate such as rental properties can also prove problematic. Sure, you have the HUD or closing statement from the purchase, and you’ll get another one for the sale. But improvements to the property such as a new roof, appliances, furnace, additions, landscaping, etc. will all add to

Identify Sources of Income: This can seem silly since most taxpayers don’t want to prove additional income for the IRS to simply tax. However, certain income sources might be non-taxable. For example, if you lent money to your son to buy his first car and you’re depositing the payments, the IRS will consider this income unless you keep good records proving the money is actually loan payments to you and not income.

Property Basis: This is absolutely critical, and the one most overlooked reasons for maintaining good records. The most challenging property is stocks- the IRS and the SEC now require brokerage firms to maintain cost or purchase history information, and report this on your tax forms. They also require that this information transfers with the stock if you move securities to another brokerage firm. This doesn’t always work.
