ith the rising cost of foods today, especially fresh fruits and vegetables, more people are turning to gardening as an alternative to buying those items from the store. In Colorado’s harsh winters and often drought-plagued summers, keeping your plants healthy and happy throughout the year can be quite a challenge. It’s far from impossible, though. So what’s the solution to this conundrum? Build a greenhouse! They are climate-controlled, can be customized to fit whatever size space you have available and can be used year-round to allow you to keep an ample supply of your favorite fresh fruits and veggies at hand. Feeling confident that erecting a greenhouse is more complicated than it sounds, Snippetz decided to research some homemade greenhouse options and compiled it all right here, just for you!

It is the least expensive type of covering and the easiest to use. Light transmission is limited as is heat retention which limits your growing capabilities, especially for plants outside your climate range.

There are two very important elements to any greenhouse: the frame and the covering. The frame must be sturdy enough to hold up the covering and leave enough room inside for the plants to grow. The covering must be transparent enough to allow sunlight in to help the plants grow up solid enough to keep the heat trapped inside.
BUSINESS, FINANCE AND LAW 14-16
Knowing what you plan to do with your greenhouse is also a key element when determining how to build your greenhouse. Some people want to extend their growing season of plants that can be easily found in their climate during the growing season. Others wish to grow plants found outside their climate range which can be a bit more difficult. With the right materials, both options are viable.

Size, location and materials are essential considerations to make when choosing how to build your greenhouse. Knowing that a small stream tends to form directly along one of your fence lines in hard rainstorms makes that area an easy one to eliminate. Also, taking into consideration weather phenomena like extreme wind or heavy snow is very important when determining what your greenhouse should look like and be made of.

Plexiglass or another hard, clear plastic is a great choice for anyone wanting to not only grow things within their own climate range but even a range out two outside of it. The problem is that the sheets tend to yellow over time and may need replacing but if the frame is sturdy enough, the project isn’t too difficult or expensive and the results of what you can successfully grow are worth the effort.
BUY OR BUILD? THAT IS THE QUESTION . . .
Fiberglass is another alternative covering that provides maximum strength through a lightweight material. It provides decent light and heat penetration and will allow you to grow plants from most climate zones. This material tends to be more costly which might put it out of the typical do-ityourself greenhouse builder’s budget.
Building your own greenhouse may sound like a great idea. Some people can manage that type of construction and labor while others might prefer the option to have someone else do all the building. That’s where a pre-fabricated greenhouse may come into play. Both are viable options and

As mentioned above, there is a fair amount of work and planning necessary when you choose to build your own greenhouse. However the cost could be significantly less which makes that option pretty attractive to a lot of people. Here are of the pros and cons to each option to help make your decision based on what will work best for you. • Pre-fab – this option requires a smaller time commitment from you because what you see in the catalog or in the store is what you’re going to get. You might have to do some construction if you purchase a DIY kit but you’ll still be saving yourself the time to compute the amount of materials necessary plus doing all the cutting and measuring to get it just right. Often pre-fab greenhouses are very sturdy structures although you will need to consider the quality of the product you’re purchasing; you get what you pay for, after all. The end result will likely be a very professional product which appeals to many people and might be a requirement if you live in a covenanted neighborhood that won’t allow for the more rustic, “homemade” look of a greenhouse you slapped together yourself. • Homemade – this type is a larger time commitment than a pre-fab building but allows you great control over what the structure will look like. How much space you have, the style you prefer, even the materials you use are entirely up to you. Speaking of materials, the cost difference between
homemade and pre-fab greenhouses often numbers in the hundreds or even thousands of dollars. Purchasing materials individually rather than in a kit or already built allows you to shop around for the best bang for your buck. You can also build your greenhouse to withstand any unusual weather conditions your area might endure rather than trusting a company in California to know what Colorado winters are like.

THE STARTER GREENHOUSE A good way to begin your foray into greenhouses is to try something a little less expensive and less permanent. A lean-to greenhouse is the perfect option. It utilizes the insulated wall of an existing building as the foundation for the whole structure. And it’s just like it sounds; a structure that essentially leans into that one insulated wall and everything else is built up from that.
TRI-LAKES
HEALTH ADVOCACY PARTNERSHIP
Tri-Lakes Health Advocacy Partnership (HAP) thanks the many individual volunteers and donors, and the following local businesses and organizations for their generious support to HAP during 2013. Their contributions enabled HAP to provide low- and no-cost health care benefits to many low income members of the Tri-Lakes community, plus provide an active Senior Center and numerous other programs for local senior citizens.
Framing out the structure using that insulated wall allows you to use whatever materials in whatever amount you can afford to build a greenhouse in a smaller, starter size. You can test the waters of an extended growing season without emptying your wallet to build a new structure. The insulated wall helps keep the temperature warm enough to keep plants growing past their prime growing time. If you plan to build this against your house, which is the typical placement of this type of greenhouse, be advised that not all locations will allow for this type of structure. Do you research to know what’s allowed and what’s not and what you’ll need to pull it off.

YOUR HOUSE IS SMARTER THAN YOU By Nick Yanez
A
bout a month ago, before Christmas, I was conned into some “winter cleaning” by my Mother. You see, instead of cleaning out the house in spring time, my family usually does its home makeover during the holidays. It makes sense. We have relatives visiting and we want to give them the best our home can offer during their stay. Anyway, I was given fridge duty. This was especially daunting because it was the second refrigerator. The main refrigerator resides in the kitchen. Cleaning it out would have been a small task. But the second fridge was the real deal. It lived in the land of the laundry room. It was previously used by a former house-mate who had since moved. Since his departure, no one had really paid any attention to this cooling device, or what creatures and crafts called it home. This fridge had problems. So it began. In my journey, I encountered some terribly expired foods, some hidden earthworms (for fishing), and a lot of sticky business. This refrigerator was packed to the brim, too. How nice would it have been if there had been some kind of reminder, telling us months ago, when a certain cheese expired? Or warning us about the earthworms? Had such technology existed, we would have slowly cleaned out the fridge over time and avoided the hassle that ensued. I’m sure you can tell where this is going… The Nick Snips column is no stranger to new technology. It seems once a month or so I find some crazy invention that’s trying to revolutionize its industry. This weeks topic is trying to invent its own industry; and it’s headed by the innovative, ever-growing company that is – Google. Imagine a home that took care of itself. That’s what the big wigs at Google are trying to bring to you (well, not you, but really, really rich people). I used the refrigerator as an example because that’s
one of the many products it plans to release; a Smart Fridge that tells you what food you have in there, when it expires, and what temperature it is. But it doesn’t end there. Google is basing this broad and bold idea off of the company Nest Labs, which it recently purchased for $3.2 billion in cash. Nest Labs has had little success with its own brand of smart home devices, a thermostat and a personable smoke detector. In fact, those are its only two devices. So why is Google paying billions for a mediocre company with two products? Because, Google is king, my fellow Americans. With the technology experts and scientists at Google, not to mention its limitless budget, the company will surely succeed with the soon-to-be-branded Smart Home. They plan to keep the two products on hand: A thermostat that automatically adjusts for your habits, keeping house temperatures where you want them, when you want them. And a smarter than ever smoke detector that promises it won’t overreact to when you burn toast. After that, Google is planning entire lighting systems for your home. Over a couple of weeks, it will adjust to your lighting habits. How bright you want your overheads, when they come on at night, and when they go off. It will do it for you, automatically. It gets bigger from there. You’ll be able to control everything from your phone. What doors are locked, what temperature it is, turning on and off your stove, taping your favorite TV shows, closing blinds, shoveling the driveway, and anything else you can think off. It will all happen from anywhere in the world. It will all happen with just the push of a button on your phone, or automatically, without your attention at all! Obviously – this brings up some privacy concerns. But most new technology does. All we can do is move forward with the times and decide what’s important to keep private and what’s not. If the Smart Home is not for you, well, I guess you’ll just have to clean out dirty refrigerators the old fashion way.

LONELINESS: THE CONSTANT HEARTACHE INTRODUCTION TO THE SERIES By Dr. Ron Ross
“Alone: The Saddest Word in the Dictionary,” “We Watched ‘Friends’ But We didn’t Make Any,” and “Extreme Responses to Loneliness” are all titles of forthcoming columns on the subject of Loneliness: The Constant Heartache. Don’t worry, it won’t be all gloom and doom, there will be several columns with helpful information such as the one titled “The Quickest Cure for Loneliness.” I wrote a similar series of columns a half-decade ago, many will be re-written and updated for this series. Let me ask you a question: Do you suppose people are more or less lonely today than back then? You’ve probably guessed the right answer: we are lonelier today than we were 10 years ago, despite the explosion of social networking. Back in May, 2012 the Atlantic Monthly carried a lengthy and comprehensive discussion of loneliness titled, “Is Facebook Making Us Lonely?” I’ll save you the pain of reading the 2,000 word treatise. The answer is, “Yes, it is.” Most people live in a world of strangers and have few personal, meaningful relationships. Of course, you might say “hello” to the UPS delivery person or talk about the weather to the barista while ordering your coffee at Starbucks, but in reality you are

not likely to change your stranger status with either of them and certainly not with the general public.

You might think, “Sure, I could use a couple of friends, but I’m doing pretty good.” And I say: Do not underestimate the negative impact a life lived in the midst of strangers can have on you. Daily exposure to people who have no desire to interact with other people, who whiz past each other like gnats on a hot summer night, can be overwhelming and debilitating.

Of course, people are supposed to have their own group of friends, family and associates who meet their social and psychological need for human interaction, but it doesn’t work like that anymore. A recent study revealed that over one-third of Americans suffer from chronic loneliness. That means they are not lonely once in a while like most people, but constantly lonely*. Why are we so lonely? How does loneliness impact our health? What are we supposed to do about it? Is there any help? Those are the kinds of questions I will answer over the course of the next 13 weeks or so. Your participation could be helpful. If you suffer from loneliness, or if you’ve found your way out of loneliness, or if you would just like to tell me about your situation, I would like to hear from you. You can send me an email: Dr.Ross@RonRossToday. com, and tell me your story. Not only that, once this series is complete, I’ll send you a compilation of all the columns as my gift to you. * h t t p : / / w w w. n e w r e p u b l i c . c o m / article/113176/science-loneliness-howisolation-can-kill-you

where pain is felt, are another way to ease pain without taking an oral medicine. Lidocaine is a numbing agent. The latest innovation for shingles treatment is Qutenza, another skin-patch medicine. The doctor has to apply this patch, and lets it stay on the skin for an hour. Then the doctor removes the patch, and the effect of the medicine lasts for three months. It is expensive. In cases where no treatment brings relief, opioids -- pain relievers of the morphine family -- have a place in treatment, so long as they are supervised carefully by the doctor.
SHINGLES RASH GONE; PAIN LINGERS ON DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Will you please do a column on shingles? I have gone through 12 weeks of the nastiest, worst illness possible. I never hear anything on TV about it. -- J.C. ANSWER: I’ll have another go at shingles. Others probably think I overdo it. But it’s such a common problem of older people that it deserves repetition. Shingles is the work of the reawakened chickenpox virus that has been asleep in nerve cells ever since a person was infected, usually in childhood. It’s a safe bet to say you were infected even if you don’t recall it; more than 95 percent of adults were. The rash of shingles usually disappears in two to four weeks. Pain, however, can stay with you. The pain is now called postherpetic neuralgia. In making the trip to the skin, the virus damaged the nerve roots that it crawled down to reach the skin. Pain is a consequence of the nerve injury. A large number of treatments exist for this aftermath of shingles. One is amitriptyline, whose primary use is relief of depression. It also has pain-relieving properties in doses lower than what’s given for depression. Neurontin (gabapentin) is a seizure-control medicine that often is successful in suppressing pain. The extended-release form of this drug, called Gralise, is given only once a day. Lyrica (pregabalin) has had a good record in quieting postherpetic neuralgia Lidocaine skin patches, placed on the skin

• On Jan. 26, 1788, the first of 50,000 convicts banished from England to Australia land in Botany Bay. These were not hardened criminals; only a small minority were transported for violent offenses. Among the first group was a 70-year-old woman who had stolen cheese to eat. • On Jan. 20, 1841, China cedes the island of Hong Kong to the British. In 1898, Britain was granted an additional 99 years of rule. In September 1984, the British and the Chinese signed a formal agreement approving a 1997 turnover of the island. • On Jan. 25, 1924, the first Winter Olympics begin at Chamonix in the French Alps. Spectators were thrilled by the ski jump and bobsled, as well as 12 other events involving a total of six sports. • On Jan. 23, 1957, the Wham-O toy company rolls out the first batch of aerodynamic plastic discs, now known as Frisbees. The story of the Frisbee began in Bridgeport, Conn., where students from nearby universities would throw empty Frisbie Pie

COMPARING HOSPITAL INFECTION RATES
T
he Medicare Hospital Compare website now provides information about hospital safety into two areas that are especially important to seniors: prevention of Clostridium difficile infections and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bloodstream infections. It gathered this information through the National Healthcare Safety Network at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. C. diff, as it’s called, can be lifethreatening, as it causes severe diarrhea, which causes dehydration. It can develop after taking a course of antibiotics or being in a hospital. The spores that cause the illness can stay on surfaces -- bed railings, counters, telephones -- for months. According to the Mayo Clinic, more than a half million people get C. diff every year, and it’s very difficult to treat. Seniors age 65 and older are 10 times more susceptible to C. diff.
MRSA isn’t a walk in the park either. It’s a staph infection that resists the antibiotics usually used to treat it. The infection can spread all over the body. It’s usually seen in people who have been in hospitals or health-care settings, or who have had invasive procedures. In other words, both of these illnesses are serious and potentially life-threatening. If you have your choice of hospitals for a procedure, don’t you want the one that’s more likely to keep you safe from infections? Go to the Hospital Compare site (www.medicare.gov/hospitalcompare) and enter your ZIP code. You can click up to three hospitals to compare. Click Compare Now and then click Readmissions, Complications and Death. Click Healthcare Associated Infections.

It’s about the size of Neptune, and it’s very, very hot -- roughly 820 degrees Fahrenheit. None of this is terribly unusual; what’s truly surprising is the fact that the planet’s surface is made up largely of ice (with an outer layer of hydrogen and helium) despite the heat. LIVING GOD’S GIFTS bringing Christ into your financial life
INVESTING FROM A BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVE
by Chuck Maher, CFP®
...BRING CHRIST INTO OUR FINANCIAL LIVES
ARE YOUR SAVINGS READY TO RETIRE?
T
oo many Americans are facing a retirement crisis. As they are approaching their retirement years many pre-retires are finding that, financially, they are woefully underprepared to retire. For whatever reason, they simply have not been able to set aside enough money to replace the income necessary to continue their current lifestyle. If you are finding yourself in a similar situation here are some steps you can take to help move you closer to secure retirement.
Reduce Spending ake a look at where you are spending money now and eliminate all unnecessary expenditures. There are many expenses that you have limited or no control over, but there are many expenses over which you have complete control. Make the time to go through those discretionary expenses and decide what really is important and eliminate the rest.
Increase Savings With the money you were able to save by reducing your spending – invest. Work to increase your savings and investing by 2-3% every year, even more as your wages increase. Remember to, if your employer provides matching contributions in your 401(k) make sure you are taking full advantage of it.
Postpone Retirement By waiting to retire you increase the amount of time you have to save and for your investments to grow. You also have reduced the number of year your investments will need to provide income. There is also
the added benefit of higher Social Security income. After age 66, for every year you delay claiming benefits, your monthly benefit will increase by 8%.

Insure Your Income
CHUCK MAHER CFP
Running out of money is arguably the greatest risk facing retirees. With the purchase of an annuity, either deferred or immediate, you can insure that you will have an income guaranteed for life. In today’s marketplace many annuities can produce an income greater than that of a certificate of deposit, bonds or dividends. Just remember that annuities are not FDIC insured and that the income generated is guaranteed by the claims paying ability of the issuing insurance company.

Like postponing retirement, getting a parttime job in retirement reduces the amount of current income your investments need to provide. It also reduces the total amount of savings and investment you will need to secure your retirement. However, a part-time job can have adverse consequences on your Social Security benefits if you start benefits prior to your full retirement age.
Admitted to Colorado State Bar and U.S. Federal Bar for the District of Colorado
The good news is that for most people it is not too late prepare for a successful retirement. By taking action now you can make your retirement a reality and a comfortable one at that.
