“You always want to have good balance. That’s the key to winning a Super Bowl. You look at the teams who have won championships, you got to have balance. So, to be able to run the ball effectively and throw the ball effectively is what gives you the chance to win a world championship.” – John Elway It’s undeniable that the Broncos had an epic 2013 regular season. Records were broken, games were won and fans were reaffirmed that their Denver Broncos are the real deal. By now, the Seattle Seahawks and the Broncos have faced off in Super Bowl XLVIII and win or lose, our hometown heroes have had an incredible season. But Snippetz had to know, where did it all begin, how did it all start and what did it take for the Broncos to get to where they are now? But besides that, what are some cool facts about this obviously cool team? Read on because Snippetz has done some digging and found out some pretty great information about the Denver Broncos!

HITTING THEIR STRIDE
The Denver Broncos were founded on Aug. 14, 1959 by Bob Howsam, a minor league baseball owner who was awarded the charter franchise, and were initially part of the American Football League. The team played the first-ever AFL game against the Boston Patriots on Sept. 9, 1960 and pulled off a 13-10 win. Winning seasons were not on the agenda for the Broncos during the 60s, however and the team walked away from that decade with a 3997-4 record. In fact, throughout the entire 10-year AFL history, the Broncos were the only original team never to have a winning season. The Broncos were also the only original AFL team never to play in the title game.
The Broncos joined the NFL in the AFL-NFL merger of 1970 and three years later, after hiring former Stanford University coach John Ralston as their head coach the prior year, the Broncos achieved their first winning season. They walked away with a record of 7-5-2. Ralston helped the team achieve two more winning seasons while he was there and finished out the 1976 season with a 9-5 record. Even though he had led the team to their only winning seasons in the franchise’s history, several prominent players made their notso-good feelings known about Ralston and he soon resigned.
John Elway played college football at Stanford before coming to the Broncos. But they didn’t initially have dibs on him. In fact, in 1983, Elway was chosen as the first pick of the draft by the Baltimore Colts. But Elway, who had also been drafted by the New York Yankees as a center-fielder, said he would rather play baseball than football unless he was traded to a team he preferred, and the Denver Broncos just happened to be one of those teams. Prior to acquiring Elway, the Broncos had featured 24 different starting quarterbacks in the 23 seasons they had been in existence. Elway stayed on with the Broncos from 1983 to 1999, led them to five Super Bowls, two of which they won back-to-back, before he retired.
In 1977 the Broncos made their first playoff appearance. They were led by Red Miller, the “Orange Crush Defense” and quarterback Craig Brian Griese took over as the BronMorton and managed to make it to cos quarterback in 1999 following their first Super Bowl appearance Elway’s retirement but didn’t have where they played, and were ultimately defeated by the Dallas Cowboys, 27-10. AFTER ELWAY
The team ran into some turmoil in 1965 when the franchise was almost lost but a local ownership group swooped in and took control of the team, rebuilding it. In 1967, the team signed “Franchise” Floyd Little who was a key player in helping the team stay in Denver. That same year, on Aug. 5, 1967, became the first AFL team to play a National

NATURAL CATASTER By Nick Yanez
P
op culture is a funny thing. It seems like every year there is some fad I can look back on and be completely baffled. Why do the stupidest things appeal to a massive audience sometimes? Last year’s greatest example of a fad in entertainment was the SyFy Channel’s surprising blockbuster hit Sharknado. For those who don’t know, the film is pretty much what it sounds like – a tornado somehow sweeps up hundreds of sharks from the ocean and goes on a rampage through Los Angeles. It was the ultimate super storm for the ultimate bad movie. But, as luck has it for the SyFy network, it became so bad it was good. After all, how can you resist dialogue like this: Baz: “Storm’s dying down.” Nova: “How can you tell?” Baz: “Not as many sharks flying around.” Or this: April: “What’s wrong?” Fin: “Your son wants to go into a helicopter and drop a bomb into the tornado.” April: “No, it’s too dangerous.” Nova: “I’ll watch his back. I’ll be the bombardier.” Or this written gem: Nova: “They took my grandfather. That’s why I really hate sharks.” Matt: “Now I really hate sharks, too.” Okay, enough of that. What was arguably the worst movie of the year (or all time) was suddenly televisions biggest hit! But it got me to wonder, what if such a storm really happened? I mean, sure it’s farfetched, but what if nature created a super storm like the
Sharknado? Apparently, such a storm has actually occurred rather recently! Perhaps half as terrifying, a “Catnado” took place across parts of the United Kingdom early last week. As told by witnesses, a small tornado swept up a horse stable and lifted several cats off the ground. The cats began to twirl around in the miniature tornado, sustaining flight for the remainder of the flying funnel’s destructive reign. It was the ultimate real life example of the beast-storm hybrid disaster. Can you imagine this cat swirling wind storm headed your way. Listen, I would obviously never want to leave this precious Earth by the way of a tornado; but if I had to get sucked up into such a storm, I certainly wouldn’t want to go out sneezing all the while. The “Catnado” settled rather quickly, and other than the shock factor of the whole thing, didn’t do that much damage. Sure a horse stable was destroyed, but no people were killed by the storm. Better yet, all of the cats survived. Isn’t that amazing!? I’m no fan of cats (mostly due to allergies and their tendency to be more evil than dogs in most animated and live action films about talking animals) but I have to give the felines some credit here. I’d also like a dose of credit for avoiding a “you know what they say about cats always landing on their feet” corny joke here. Oh wait, I guess I just did make that joke. What’s the deadliest disaster/animal combo you can think of? Twitter blew up after the Sharknado phenomenon coming up with such super-storms as, Lizard Blizzard, Squidquake, Shi Tzunami, and Moosoon. Still, nothing scares an asthmatic dog lover quite like the real-life Catnado. May you no longer live in fear dear residents of the United Kingdom; the worst is over; the storm has passed. LONELINESS: THE CONSTANT HEARTACHE
SHOCKING DEATH REVEALS LONELINESS By Dr. Ron Ross

oy Geno’s body was found draped in a tree. It was below an embankment that dropped some 50 feet to railroad tracks near Nineteenth and Mason Streets in Omaha, Nebraska. A 9-year-old girl walking with her aunt along the tracks saw the body. Police investigated but nobody knew what really happened. Geno could have fallen from the edge and landed in the trees, he could have been pushed, or, in his despair, he could have done it himself. No one saw anything. No one knows. An autopsy was done but it revealed only that Geno had cirrhosis of the liver. His death, according to an article in the Omaha World Herald, had an added ignominy: Officials initially misspelled his name; they identified him as “Ray” Geno. There was little said about his passing except for the grim way his body was found. Had he died in his cheap hotel room where he lived downtown, his name would have been a mere entry in a routine corner’s report. Geno, 55, was an alcoholic with a long list of arrests for drinking. “We talked about training, about employment but it didn’t have much of an effect on him,” said Art Lian, a social worker for the Veterans Administration. “He wasn’t motivated. He was quiet and friendly, but just about hopeless.” Lian explained, “He kind of gave up. He had

Lian had suggested a Veterans home but Geno declined. He wanted to live alone in his low-rent room at the Overland Hotel on Howard Street. His landlady said, “He was a real loveable guy.” She said he helped around the hotel, sometimes ran errands, did odd jobs, drove a moving truck, worked as a cook, but nothing steady. He spent most of his time unemployed and inebriated.

Geno lived on a $185-a-month veteran’s pension check as a veteran of World War II, the submarine service some people think, but they didn’t know. He didn’t talk much about his past. A sister-in-law in Texas reached by telephone told the Omaha World Herald that the family lost contact with him “many years ago.” According to her, he was one of five brothers whose mother died in childbirth. After the boys grew up on an Alabama farm, “they just scattered.” “We heard from him a few years back,” she said, “But not much. How did he die, do you know? Where did he die?”

with greater vigor and can lessen or abolish most symptoms. Anything that affects heart function must be treated. High blood pressure, for example, has to be lowered.
HEART FAILURE IS QUITE TREATABLE DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am 71 years old and have been diagnosed with chronic heart failure. In October of last year, I had triple bypass surgery, but now I’m in good health. Some things I have read about chronic heart failure are unnerving. Will you give me your take on what lies ahead for me? -- S.T. ANSWER: Heart failure, chronic heart failure and congestive heart failure are the same condition. It’s one of the most common reasons why older people are hospitalized. The basic problem is that the heart has become so weak that it circulates blood poorly. Such poor circulation permits fluid to ooze out of blood vessels and “congest” tissues in the feet, ankles and lower legs. The lungs fill with fluid, which brings on heart failure’s cardinal feature -- gasping for breath on even slight exertion. Other signs of heart failure are breathlessness when lying in bed, heart enlargement, seen on X-rays, and the doctor’s discovery of lung sounds that indicate the lungs have fluid in them.
You might think that inactivity is best for your heart -- it isn’t. Your doctor will outline a program that keeps you active to the level that your heart can tolerate. Walking is one example, but more strenuous exercise is encouraged when your heart becomes stronger. You should be on a low-salt diet. You ought not to be discouraged about your outlook. The life span of people with congestive heart failure has increased by 15 percent in men and by 5 percent in women in just the past decade. The increment in women’s life span is smaller because women live longer, on average, than men.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My EKG report, sent to me, says “left axis deviation.” Is that a big deal? -- M.Y.
OFFERING THE FINEST QUALITY AND LOWEST PRICES!
ANSWER: It means that that electric signal originating in the upper heart chamber and responsible for each heartbeat takes a different route to reach the lower heart chambers, the pumping chambers.
We have re-designed the Palmer Lake Wellness Center to provide our clients with our very best!
In the absence of symptoms, it’s not a dangerous thing. You don’t have to dwell on it. I take it you have a doctor who ordered the EKG. That doctor will follow up to see if you have any hidden heart trouble. The condition is not an emergency situation.

Numerous conditions lead to heart failure. At the top of the list is coronary artery disease, the blockage of heart arteries that often brings on a heart attack. This must be why your heart failed. You did have surgery to correct blocked heart arteries, but they did their damage well before surgery took place. Heart valve problems, high blood pressure and atrial fibrillation are other causes of heart failure.

love meatloaf. I also love stuffed cabbage rolls. So, I combined them, and now I have my newest favorite way to prepare meatloaf. 2 cups finely shredded cabbage 1/2 cup finely chopped onion 16 ounces extra-lean ground sirloin beef or turkey breast 1 cup cold cooked rice 1 1/2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce 1 (8-ounce) can tomato sauce 2 tablespoons reduced-sodium ketchup 1 teaspoon dried parsley flakes 1/8 teaspoon black pepper 1. The Diamonds. Purists maintain that the original by the Gladiolas is the finer version, but it’s the energy of the Diamonds’ version that made it more popular. 4. Stevie Nicks and Don Henley. Nicks had written the song for Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter, who didn’t use it on their own “Leather and Lace” album. 5. “Knock on Wood,” originally by Eddie Floyd in 1966. Others have done covers, but it was Amii Stewart in 1979 that made it a danceable disco song. (On the other hand, don’t miss Eric Clapton’s version on YouTube.)

Maternity clothes are not a qualified medical expense. Sorry! Simply put, the expense must echo the sentiment of “medically necessary.” After all that, only the portion that exceeds 10% of your income is deductible (7.5% for those 65 and older). So if you make $50,000, the first $5,000 ($3,750 for 65 and older) cannot be deducted. And, if you use HSA funds or medical savings accounts to pay your bills, the tax benefit has already been taken (no double dipping).

SOCIAL SECURITY?
A
s more and more people are approaching retirement age, the issues surrounding Social Security benefits are becoming an increasing concern. In my financial planning practice I am receiving many questions relating to Social Security. Here are some of the most common questions and my thoughts.
WILL SOCIAL SECURITY BE THERE WHEN I RETIRE? The most recent government-issued projections indicate Social Security funding will run out by 2033. However, that does not mean that in 20 years Social Security will be gone. It is in fact the point where revenues will not be adequate to meet 100% of the promised benefits established by law. At that point, unless Congress intervenes, the Social Security Administration estimates benefits will need to be cut by 22% and could decline from there.
SHOULD I START RETIREMENT BENEFITS AS SOON AS I’M ELIGIBLE? The minimum age Social Security retirement benefits can be started is 62. Today, for a variety of reasons, an increasing number of retirees are electing to begin benefits at that early age. But it does pay to wait. For each year benefits are postponed after full retirement, currently age 66, benefits are increased by 8%. For those who can wait until at age 70 that would be an increase in benefits of nearly 35%.
WILL I BE ABLE TO LIVE COMFORTABLY ON SOCIAL SECURITY? Social Security is not nor has it ever

been a complete source for retirement income. The average monthly benefit being paid to a retired worker is $1,242. So unless you have a pension or savings to supplement Social Security, you may find that you will need to greatly reduce your lifestyle to get by with just Social Security retirement income.

WILL I BE ELIGIBLE FOR MEDICARE WHEN I START SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFITS? Unless you have been receiving Social Security disability benefits for are least 2 years you are not eligible for Medicare until age 65. Many of those who have started retirement income at age 62 have found that they have been woefully underprepared for the high cost of health insurance. Yet another reason to postpone starting benefits. The choices surrounding the decision to begin Social Security retirement income are complex and often times come with unintended consequences. I would encourage you seek out competent advice from a professional specializing in retirement planning before you decide. “For lack of guidance a people falls; security lies in many counselors.” Proverbs 12:14
