ost people probably don’t know the difference between a llama and an alpaca. Or what makes alpacas so special. But with more than 40 alpaca ranches within 25 miles of Colorado Springs, there’s got to be something to these incredible camelids. Is it their fleece which can net between five and 10 pounds per shearing? Maybe it has something to do with the contented humming sounds they make when they are, well, content. Maybe it’s that they are grazing animals that don’t need a ton of

And naturally, Snippetz decided to look into alpacas to find out more about them and to see if we could pinpoint exactly what IS so special about them!
Speaking of size, alpacas are smaller than llamas, which is one key way to tell the two animals apart. Llamas weigh around 250 to 450 pounds while alpacas weigh about 100 to 150 pounds. ALL ABOUT ALPACAS There are two types of alpacas: Suri and Huacaya. Suri alpacas have longer, shiny fleece that is very soft and often has a slight curl. Suri alpacas are rarer and therefore more expensive. It is estimated that their population makes up about 20 percent of the total alpaca population in the United States. Their fleece reflects their scarcity and is more expensive as well. Often the fiber from Suri alpacas is too slippery to spin into useable yarn by itself and is frequently mixed with cotton, wool or silk. Huacaya alpacas are fluffier and have a teddy-bear like look which appeals to many alpaca ranchers. These alpacas are actually hardier

For thousands of years, alpacas bolstered the economy in areas such as Peru before Spanish Conquistadors conquered the Incas in the 17th century. To escape the invaders, the Inca hid in the Andes Mountains, taking with them their alpacas. This act likely helped the species escape extinction. In the 1940s, Don Julio Barreda began breeding alpacas to produce better fleece and certain sought-after colors. The two different types of alpacas were created by Barreda’s breeding efforts and he is recognized today as the world’s finest alpaca breeder.

hat is it with the color pink? It’s popping up everywhere; the grocery store, restaurants, the mall, the internet. Now, I’m not one of those guys who feel the need to act macho and hate on the color pink, but most things are better done in moderation. Now I know what you’re thinking already – he’s acting like he doesn’t know it’s Valentine’s Day (snicker, laugh, raise eyebrow). No, that’s not the point of this introductory paragraph, but thanks for finding me so predictable.
7 Tips for Keeping Receipts Organized for Tax Time Many Americans often ignore or quickly say "No" when asked whether they want a receipt, but not small-business owners. Is this because they spend hours upon hours organizing them during the year and look forward to turning them into their accountant? Um, not necessarily. Savvy business owners simply know how to keep receipts because if they don't, their tax return could be in peril. The reality is: Receipts are audit protection and we have to take that seriously. Learn from Entrepreneur.com www.entrepreneur.com/article/ 225900

In truth, I’m very aware that the color pink is flooding our society because this week is Valentine’s Day. However, in no way do I support this outrageous trend. I think we can all agree that pink is a “girl color”. Now, I’m not saying if you’re a man you can’t wear it or anything like that. I’m just stating a fact. Typically, that color appeals to females. Statistics will back my claims as more pink merchandise is sold in stores that target women; stores like Victoria’s Secret, Deb, and Claire’s. This is not sexism; it’s just basic human observation. It is factual.
719-216-4421
Now, on to my point. Why is it then, that Valentine’s Day is so targeted towards women? Why is it expected of men to buy elaborate gifts and plan fantasy-dates on February 14th every year? Isn’t the day supposed to be a mutual celebration of love? Sorry for taming a nice warm fire on a frigid day ladies, but we need to investigate this tradition fully. Take, for example, Japan. In the ‘Land of the Rising Sun’ it’s actually frowned upon for men to give gifts to their significant others on Valentine’s Day. In fact, it’s a day when men are to anticipate grand gifts from their favorite gal. The most common gift (according to
sales statistics) is chocolate. Sounds pretty good to me; I’m sure most of the gentlemen around here would agree. Those Japanese women sure do know how to make a guy smile. Maybe they, as a nation, have it all figured out. You’ve heard the phrase “happy wife, happy life!” right? Maybe the key is the other way around. Let’s give this a try, “Happy man is the best plan!”. Err – I’ll work on that. But you get the idea. Look, I know chocolate is a common gift in America too and I know plenty of women buy gifts for their boyfriends or husbands. But there’s no denying, with the big teddy bear’s and pink heart-shaped balloons, that February 14th is a day that big companies try to pressure men into buying sophisticated gifts for the exceptional female in their life. I’m not even necessarily complaining about this. I’m just stating that there is another way. Maybe we should all take a note from our technologically advanced friends from across sea’s and start making men the center of this cupid-inspired holiday. Yes, let’s start a revolution! Don’t let the CEO’s and Big Whigs on Wall Street tell you what to buy and when. We are the people! We make our own decisions! One minor side note: In Japan, men are expected to reciprocate the gifts on a day titled “White Day” (One month later, March 14th). It is also a custom to spend an estimated threetimes as much on White Day as the woman spent on Valentine’s Day. In light of this tiny detail – maybe we should just suck it up for another year or two and give more than we get, gentlemen. After all, is their a greater joy then giving to the one you love the most? I’m not sure St. Valentine himself could have said it better. Happy Valentine’s Day or Single’s Awareness Day (S.A.D.) to you all!

LONELINESS: THE CONSTANT HEARTACHE
EIGHT CAUSES OF LONELINESS By Dr. Ron Ross
A
t every season in life, loneliness of some degree is unavoidable: Intransigence change, tragedy - joy, failure - success, birth - death, love- hate, war - peace, life itself, all contribute to social interaction or social disconnect. What are the causes of loneliness? Here are eight common causes of loneliness: Abuse (often referred to as psychological loneliness). Childhood trauma is sometimes a factor for the chronically lonely. Such things as cruelty, neglect, exploitation, bullying, etc. can cause the victims to think the people around them are not worthy of their trust, and drive them to live solitary, and what they think are, safe lives. Rejection (often referred to as social loneliness). Those who are abandoned ridiculed or lied to often suffer from loneliness. If they are told, “You’re no good”, or “You’re not welcome here,” by family and friends, if they are frequently lied to, they begin to see the whole world as a dangerous and unfriendly place. To protect themselves from further harm they build defensive walls that shut out those who could be friends. The following reasons for loneliness fit into the general category of social loneliness, when someone feels cutoff, ostracized, even exiled. Misfit. For often indiscernible reasons, some people just don’t fit in certain social situations and fail to assimilate. Misfits may pretend to not care that much about their friendless lives and even glory in the fact they are geeks, nerds, or nonconformists. Nevertheless, they are often quite lonely.

Death. The death of a beloved mate, parent or friend is one of the most painful emotions to endure often causing the survivor to feel forlorn and bewildered. A widow described her loneliness this way: “Eight years ago, when my husband died with cancer, I was so overwhelmed with loneliness I thought the huge chasm of pain would never be filled. The days were an endless maze of meaningless routine, and my emotions ran amok like a malfunctioning roller coaster. The nights were even worse.”

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: About dust mites -- I am getting nowhere with them because they are practically invisible. They crawl in and out of my mouth and on my face when I am in bed. I have suffered too long with them. -- P.B. ANSWER: Dust mites are hardly visible; they’re smaller than the period at the end of this sentence. They don’t transmit diseases, but they can create trouble for those who are allergic to them or their waste material. The mite skeleton and waste products can provoke asthma, skin itching, eye itching, sneezing and dripping nose. Most people, however, live in blissful ignorance of the mites. They have no symptoms. Dust mites don’t bite. They feed on dead skin cells, mostly cells that have fallen off the body. They don’t enter the mouth. You really can’t tell they’re around. They like living in bedrooms -- in mattresses and bedding, including blankets -- upholstered furniture and carpets. They can take up life in stuffed animals. Allow only washable stuffed toys into a bedroom. They prefer a warm, humid environment, a preference that can be used to evict them. Keep the bedroom cool and dry with a dehumidifier, an air conditioner or both. The humidity should be less than 50 percent. Mites dehydrate at that humidity. Wash all bedding weekly. Vacuum mattresses and

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I read that more heart attacks occur in winter than in summer. Why? If you dress warmly, does that protect you? -- N.C.
PALMER LAKE WELLNESS CENTER
ANSWER: Cold weather is a stress on the body and the heart. The heart has to work harder to keep the body warm by pumping more blood than it ordinarily does. That extra effort is too much for hearts not in the best of shape. Dressing warmly lessens the risk.

ANSWER: It’s best to take Synthroid, the most-often-prescribed thyroid hormone preparation, on an empty stomach and to wait at least 30 minutes before taking any food. I have to assume that your sister’s doctor is checking her thyroid hormone levels from time to time. If they’re OK, she’s OK and her medicine-taking is OK. If she has to increase her dose of the medicine because of low blood levels, then she should adopt your method of taking Synthroid.

hen Palmer Ridge High School Varsity Senior Co-Captains, Lindsey Schwarz and Sabrina Macneir attended the NDA (National Dance Alliance) Pom Team Camp at UCCS in July, they expected to bond with their new team, learn new choreography and advance their dance skills…..which they did. However, they had no idea that camp would also be their ticket to performing in London and New York City, respectively. At camp, Lindsey Schwarz earned the coveted All-American award. Being an AllAmerican is one of the highest awards a High School dancer can achieve. Thousands of dancers throughout the United States tryout, but only the top 10% are chosen! The All-Americans were given the opportunity to perform in London at the New Year’s Day Parade on January 1, 2014. “I cannot think of a higher honor than representing the USA while dancing in London, England,” said Schwarz. Of course the day of the performance was the only day of the week with rainy weather. Lindsey was so excited she did not mind. The parade had 10,000 performers with a street lined audience of over a million, and over 20 million televised viewers around the world. In Europe, schools do not have cheerleaders or dance teams, so the girls were like celebrities amongst the people in London. It was not uncommon for her to be stopped for a

Lindsey, with other elite All-American dancers and chaperones from around the country, took time to sight see and experience London. They went on a city bus tour, a Thames River evening cruise, visited the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, and Windsor Castle, to name a few. With her mother, Lindsey also got the chance to take the train to Paris for the day along with many other exciting venues.

This year Lindsey was the only dancer that received the All-American award from Palmer Ridge High School. Eight dancers represented Colorado in London and over 150 All-American dancers from around the United States were present. “I feel so blessed that I was one of only 150 girls to have this amazing opportunity. To be an “All American” you must be a leader, in the top percentile of US dancers, and have the passion and love for dancing. I can hardly articulate how blessed and honored I feel to be named an All-American,” said Schwarz.

Although the parade started at 9am, the girls had to be dressed, ready, and in the meeting room by 5am. It was a frigid day, with temperatures in the teens. Sabrina says she wore layers of clothing and was so excited she wasn’t even cold. Some of the things that they did as a Varsity Spirit group were: Stayed in the Hilton New York Hotel, climbed to the top of the Empire State Building, saw the Statue of Liberty, rode the New York Subways, enjoyed the famous Rockettes at the Radio City Music Hall Christmas spectacular, and visited Times Square.
Palmer Ridge HS Senior, Sabrina Macneir was selected at the NDA Pom Camp in July to perform in the 87th Macy’s Day Parade in New York City. The Varsity Spirit (spirit national association) performance consists of 12th grade Captains or Co-captains. There were 600 girls from around the country in the Varsity Spirit group; cheerleaders and dancers combined.
With her family, Sabrina toured NYU (a college she was recently accepted to), went to SOHO, shopped on canal street, visited Ground Zero, saw Mama Mia on Broadway, ate at the famous Carmine’s, rode the Fer-

Of all the excitement, the highlight of the trip was performing in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade®! “New York is SO different from any other city that I ever experienced...from the fashion, to the food, to the fun, to the celebrities. Being in the Macy’s Day Parade was an experience of a lifetime with memories I will always cherish. I LOVE NYC! I could easily call it home,” said Sabrina. Lindsey Schwarz and Sabrina Macneir are both co-captains of the Palmer Ridge Golden Bears Dance Team. Lindsey was the first dancer from Palmer Ridge to go to London. Sabrina was the first dancer from Palmer Ridge to go to the New York City Thanksgiving Day Parade.

In the past, the Tax Court has considered internet expenses to be a utility such as a telephone or electricity and therefore the deduction as a business expense was routinely denied. But the argument comes full circle since taxpayers have relief for deducting utilities under the home office deduction.

DEDUCTING CELL PHONE & HOME INTERNET
Tina Another common question relates to deducting internet expenses. A taxpayer may deduct the cost of home internet service if the expense is ordinary and necessary in the taxpayer’s trade or business. Some history-
As a result, home internet expenses are not subject to strict substantiation rules according to the Tax Court. In other words, you don’t have to record each minute of internet access and the business connection in a journal to
calculate your deduction. So, the netnet of all this is that Yes, you can deduct internet expenses. You just need to demonstrate the necessity to your trade or business, and determine the percentage of business use. Easy! axpayers frequently ask about deducting cell phone charges and surprisingly, the answer has always been Yes. However, long gone are the strict recordkeeping requirements. You still need to prove how much of your cell phone expenses were personal, and how much were associated with your job or business. This can be a challenge. A reasonable argument could beThere are 5,840 hours available in a calendar year (365 days x 16 hours). Of those, you work 2000 hours (50 weeks x 40 hours). Your business use percentage would then be 34% (2,000 divided by 5,840). You might be able to stretch this a bit if you can prove that you have another phone that can be used, or if your cell phone is also used in the evenings and weekends. To say you use a cell phone 100% of the time for business is a very dangerous argument.

LIVING GOD’S GIFTS bringing Christ into your financial life
INVESTING FROM A BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVE
by Chuck Maher, CFP®
...BRING CHRIST INTO OUR FINANCIAL LIVES
A ST VALENTINE’S GIFT THAT MIGHT JUST LAST A LIFETIME
D
o you remember those times when you first started dating your spouse, how special it was? How you wanted to spend every minute with each other? How you would share your goals, your dreams, and your visions of the future? How on those hot summer nights you would look dreamily into each other’s eyes and start talking personal finance? No? Well, maybe you should. It is never too late for a Money date. For most couples the issues surrounding money and it use and abuse will be the single greatest stress in their marriage. Arguing over money can cause irreparable damage in a relationship if left unresolved. Far too often when couples finally start to talk about money the situation has already reached a boiling point. At that point it becomes more about hurt feelings, blame and defensiveness than resolution. Money problems are the most often cited reason for divorce in America today. Yet, for the couple that can work through their differences in attitude, upbringing and experiences, money can become a tool that brings them closer together. When couples make the time to create shared goals, they have defined their financial direction and found a common dream to work towards together. I am often amazed at how the simple act of spending time together, really thinking about what is important, writing it down and prioritizing it can bring about an incredible bond between a married couple; a bond worthy of celebration. Enter the money date. A money date is not about blame or accusations, or the current financial mishaps. It is a time to rejoice and celebrate God’s hand in our financial lives. Oftentimes
we
overlook
the
Honoring God with Your Financial Blessings CHUCK MAHER CFP PO Box 39 Monument, CO 80132
importance of celebrating the successes in our lives. We ignore the opportunity to be a cheerleader or to give encouragement. Yet, it is those small steps and simple kind words that lead to great success. The money date purposely sets aside time to do just that; to celebrate the financial successes in our lives.

So what would a money date look like? It could start simple with meeting for a cup of coffee or tea at your favorite bistro. But remember to leave all the baggage at the door. Open your date with expressions of gratitude for each other and the blessing that the Lord has provided and then liberally give thanks to each other. Take some time to revisit your goals and dreams. Then review your financial choices and decisions of the past week. Recognize even the smallest of steps that bring you closer to your goals and praise each other. Finally, do something special – celebrate. That could be something as simple as a walk in the park or a single rose, but make it special. After all it is a date. Money issues and concerns can wreak havoc or they can become a bonding force in a marriage. That is our choice. This week why not make time for a money date? “…each of you looking to the others’ interest rather than to his own.” Phil 2:4
