B

efore the advent of the printing press, humans struggled with how to distribute their ideas. Sure, we could talk to each other and tell our stories and ideas to our fellow humans with the hopes that things wouldn’t get jumbled along the lines. Or we could hand write whatever it was that we wanted to share but hand cramps are no joke and hand writing is incredibly time consuming. We knew there had to be a better way. There had to be a way to get the information we longed to share out to the world in a fast, efficient manner; a more permanent option than just speaking and a more mobile option than cave drawings. So how did it all start? How did we get from how things were back then to how they are now? Snippetz wanted answers so we decided to investigate the history of printing.

Printing is little more than stamping. Truthfully, that’s where it all started in the first place. Early humans discovered how to duplicate an image by pressing it into some material, like clay, that would hold its shape once the image was removed. This was the case in civilizations dating back to at least 3000 B.C. and likely even earlier.

Beginning in the 1450s block-books became widely used. Block-books were woodcut blocks containing both images and text carved on the same block and provided a less expensive, simpler alternative to books that were printed using several blocks. Most often, they contained a lot of illustrations and minimal text but emerged as the bestsellers of the times. The two most common examples of block-books are the “Ars moriendi” and the “Biblia pauperum.”

The original stamping concept evolved into the first true form of printing, called woodblock printing. This method involved cutting an image into a block of wood and then using pigment to transfer that image onto textiles or paper. The earliest woodblock printings on cloth that still exist today are from China in about 220 A.D. They were printed on silk and depict flowers in three different colors. One of the mandates of the Buddhist religions is the circulation of standard translations of the scripture across a wide area and what better way to achieve that through the use of the same woodblock printing technology on paper. Other important Buddhist texts were also copied and distributed through this same method.

Woodblock printing on cloth reached Europe and was commonly practiced by 1300. Many printings were religious in nature and at first, were quite large but by the 1400s, the popularity switched to smaller prints and eventually to images other than religious ones that were printed on playing cards. Starting from about 1425, these images began to be printed in a large quantity.

MOVABLE TYPE PRINTING Movable type printing is a method that

While initially thought to be a good idea, the massive set of characters in the Chinese language made movable type a bit difficult to use. Johannes Gutenberg, a goldsmith from Germany is credited with creating the first European movable type print technology around 1439. Not long after, he developed the printing press and changed the face of printing forever, allowing for mass production of a single text with minimal work and time. When compared to woodblock printing, movable type page-setting can be achieved much more quickly and is typically more durable. The metal pieces aren’t prone to wear like the blocks of wood and the lettering is more uniform, which led to the development of typography and fonts. in 1455, the obviously higher quality and lower cost of the book solidified the superiority of movable type and spurred the spread of printing presses throughout Europe. Most printing done today is completed on some sort of derivative of Gutenberg’s movable type printing.

THE PRINTING PRESS A printing press is a machine that is used to apply pressure to a surface covered with ink, like an inkpad, that rests on a medium like cloth or paper, which ultimately transfers an image to that medium. As mentioned above, Gutenberg developed the first printing press in Europe but he didn’t work alone. He partnered with Andreas Dritzehen and Andreas Heilmann, the former having been a gem-cutting student of Gutenberg’s and the latter being the owner of a paper mill. Using the printing press, printing houses were able to mass-produce texts on a scale on previously dreamed of. These houses were run by master printers who owned the shops, chose and edited their selected manuscripts, determined

the quantity in which a book was to be printed, sold the books they produced, raised money to run the production operation and set up distribution of the books.

Within print shops, there were several jobs held by several workers. Apprentices worked for the master printers by preparing the ink, dampening the sheets of paper and assisting with the press.

ROTARY PRINTING PRESS

Journeymen printers were men who had completed their apprenticeships and typically helped ensure the quality of the product by centering the print on the paper. Compositors set the type for printing and pressmen worked the press which was a physically demanding job

Rotary drum printing involved carving the images around the outside of a cylinder which is then rolled along a continuous roll of paper, cardboard, plastic or other medium, creating a series of copies that can be cut into individual texts.

LITHOGRAPHY

INTO THE FUTURE . . .

Bavarian author Aloys Senefelder invented lithography in 1796 and this method s used for printing on a smooth surface. It uses chemicals to create the desired image. When the printing plate is introduced to a compatible ink and water mixture, the ink will adhere to the hydrophobic chemical on the plate, creating the positive part of the image. This allows for a much flatter printing plate and allows for longer use of that plate. High-volume lithography is still used today to produce posters, maps, books, newspapers, really anything

And as you can probably assume, more milestones are being hit every day. In fact, 3D printing is no longer just a special effect from sci-fi movies anymore. It can be used to recreate things by physically “printing” successive layers of a material on top of the previous ones to build a three dimensional image of whatever it is you want to create. We don’t know what the future of printing holds for us but it’s gonna be great to see what develops!

ecently the town council of Colorado Springs took a vote that shook the very core of our local society. After months and months of the marijuana debate, and seemingly no realistic chance for legal sale in the southern Colorado city, the council decided to make all narcotic legalized for commercial sale. The decision comes as a huge surprise for voters. “I coundn’t believe it” says Jennifer Jin-Roberts. The local librarian says she’ll definitely be attending future meetings at city hall, “We plan to protest and make a stand. We’re organizing anti-narcotics teams now and getting a really good response” the mother-offour continued, “I’ll definitely be paying attention to who we let make these decisions from now on” Of course the article above was pure satire; that was fun. Can you imagine if something this ridiculous actually happened? I can’t. In fact, I don’t think I would have believed it for a minute. And while it may have been a good dose of fun, this fake article was proving a bigger point.

XLVIII Believed to have been Rigged and Currently Under Investigation by the NFL, Obama Admits US Hasn’t Been the Same Since Buddy Holly Died… Are you reading these things folks? Every single one of these headlines is preposterous! Yet I’ve seen them shared and talked about as if they are actual stories being reported by respected national journalists. This has to stop. Please don’t get me wrong. I’m not trying to insult or condemn anyone who happened to believe these stories. It’s not their fault, you see. It’s become commonplace in our fast and furious society to see a story, share it online, and move on to the next bit of news. People don’t have time to investigate every little thing they hear; and that’s fine. You can see/hear/read a news story and believe it. I have no problem with that. It’s your choice. However, if you plan on sharing that story with other people, perhaps you should at least see if it’s factual. In every single one of the headline examples above, the story stated that the article was made as satire at the top of the piece. It’s as simple as reading the italicized fine print at the top of the page. We need to start a movement. Please start investigating the news and rumors you spread to your peers. Get the facts straight and then form an opinion. We can’t just be reading the headlines and then immediately reacting with pure emotion. If we did that, I’m quite sure there would be some rioting at the Colorado Springs city hall right about now.

Stop reading the headlines, people. Day after day it seems some new satirical article is making its way into my social life. Whether someone brings it up on my lunch break at work, or I see it posted on my facebook home feed, fake articles are making waves around America. The worst part is that when someone brings these articles to my attention, it’s usually because they believe them to be true. Over the last two weeks, these are actual headlines that people in my life have claimed as true: Blake Griffin Slaps Justin Bieber at a Hollywood Starbucks, Russia Applauds America’s Efforts to Exclude Gay Athletes From Professional Sports, Super Bowl

So here’s a challenge to you, my dear reader - This week, find the craziest headline you can find online (from a legitimate news source) and read the whole article. Maybe even read more articles on the same subject; get both sides to the story. Then, tell your friends and family about it with a well informed opinion.

LONELINESS: THE CONSTANT HEARTACHE

WHAT LONELY PEOPLE SAY By Dr. Ron Ross

T

here are a variety of explanations as to why people are lonely; some are misguided excuses, some are valid reasons. Can you identify which are excuses and which are reasons by hearing what they say? “I’m alone by no choice of my own.” Some years ago I knew a lady who wanted to save her marriage from destruction. She had two sons, a lovely home and many things worth fighting for. She got her husband to agree to join a sports team for couples so they could share their leisure time in hopes that this would draw them closer together. It didn’t work. He ran off with another man’s wife he met playing volleyball in the couple’s league. Suddenly she was alone but not by any choice of her own. A good friend recently had to place his 92-year-old mother in an extended care facility. It was an elegant home with everything his mother could possibly need. She had only one complaint: she knew absolutely no one. She felt abandoned and alone. “I’m alone because I no longer have the connections I had in the past.” My father wasn’t real excited about my brother’s decision to attend the University of Nebraska. He finally agreed, so on the day of enrollment he drove him to Lincoln, gave him a few hundred dollars in cash, and dropped him off on a corner of the campus. He was on his own. As a young man I took my family from the comfort of loving, supportive relatives and friends in the mid-west to Lusaka, Zambia in central Africa for a 3+ year tour as missionaries. We were 8,836 miles from those who we

could depend on for love and support and we felt alone. “I’m lonely because there is no one in my life with whom I can share my feelings and experiences.” I call this the “lost in a crowd syndrome”. We’ve all felt it. I spent three days in “The Loop” in downtown Chicago all alone. Never made one acquaintance, never talked to anyone for any reason more than a simple business transaction.

In any large city teeming crowds live out their lonely lives with no one with whom they can share their deepest feelings. The same thing happens in suburbia where many of the lovely homes that line the streets of “Pleasant Valley USA” are filled with people unwilling or unable to relate to the folks next door.

After taking antibiotics for a sinus infection, I developed diarrhea and bloating. I had many tests and scans. Everything was OK. My symptoms continued. On my third visit, they took a stool specimen, which showed yeasts. The doctor suggested I go to a health-food store and buy probiotics. I did, and a miracle happened: My diarrhea stopped. Is yogurt considered probiotics? For how long and how often should you take probiotics? -- N.A. ANSWER: Probiotics contain live microorganisms that promote health when eaten. The labels on these products must say “live and active cultures.” The names of the organisms most often used are lactobacillus, bifidobacterium and sacchromyces. Some brand names of probiotics are Culturelle, Align, Floraster and the yogurt Activia. Curbing diarrhea is only one use for these products. They’re also used for irritable bowel syndrome and other conditions.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I would like to comment on your article on bed-wetting. I am 68 and was a bed-wetter when I was little. It was during an era when children were supposed to be potty trained at young ages. I remember the rituals my parents went through to break me of this habit that, I suppose, was embarrassing to them. I eventually outgrew it.

If both parents were, their child has a 75 percent chance of wetting the bed. Genes are a big factor. Bed-wetting is involuntary. The child is in no way responsible. enjoy preparing dinner for my husband, especially for special holiday meals. Since he has some health issues, I try to make sure that the dishes I prepare contain ingredients that are nutritious and delicious -- and that includes almonds. Of all the things to love about almonds, this one will really get your heart pumping: Research shows that a diet high in heart-healthy foods like almonds can help to reduce cholesterol levels. That’s good news for just about everyone, as cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 cause of death among men and women in the U.S. Almonds also are one of the richest sources of vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant that helps to reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease. A study published in the Journal of Nutrition found that consuming whole almonds, including the skin, doubles the antioxidant intake. Just 1 ounce (about 22 almonds) packs more protein than an egg and more than 3 grams of dietary fiber. This same portion provides about 160 calories, and the high protein content staves off hunger. Almonds also are a rich source of riboflavin, magnesium, manganese and copper. Shelled almonds may be whole, sliced or slivered with skin on, or blanched with the skin removed. Look for dryroasted almonds that contain no additional ingredients such as sugar or preservatives. Store them in a tightly sealed container in a cool, dry place to prevent them from going rancid or absorbing the odors of other foods. 1. In large shallow dish, combine flour, poutry seasoning, salt and pepper to taste and coat fish fillets in this mixture. Melt butter and oil in nonstick skillet over medium heat and add ginger root. Stir, then add the coated fillets. Saute for 3-4 minutes on each side until the fish begins to turn golden and flakes easily when tested with a fork. Remove to an ovenproof dish, cover and keep warm in low oven.
