o you ever feel like every time you turn around, there’s something new in the technological world that’d being advertised as that thing you really need and shouldn’t be living without? These Andriod-based glasses are “monocular augmented reality devices.” In laymen’s terms, they’re really cool glasses that feature a display, video recording capabilities and wireless connectivity. They come with preinstalled apps that can record and play back high definition video images and pictures. It’s like wearing a camera on your face and who wouldn’t like that?

The glasses feature Bluetooth technology so they can be paired with other Bluetooth devices. They also create a type of situational awareness through the use of GPS and integrated headtracking capabilities (say that three times fast).

Who’s to say this won’t become the new way to shop not only for cars but for everything? CRAZY OR CANDID?

M

ost people hear a conspiracy theory for the first time and completely dismiss it. Whether it sounds too ridiculous to be true, the facts don’t line up, or the person telling you is not-all-there, usually these leaps of idealism stretch far past our realm of logic. But then, you could find yourself looking further into it. With enough internet support and Youtube videos out there, I’ve come to find that any conspiracy theory can start to feel true if you spend enough time researching it. They can throw inconsistencies and very wise speculation at you. They can skew facts left and right; before you know it, you’re one of them. They got you!

Who are they exactly? Well, they can be anyone who challenged the thinking of society on big events throughout history.

You’ve at least heard some rumblings about this stuff before. There’s countless conspiracy theories about all different things throughout US history – Area 51, The Kennedy Assassination, 9/11, Osama Bin Laden; the list goes on and on.

Recently a secret military fortress was uncovered underneath notorious California prison Alcatraz. To the knowledge of almost everyone, the military base built underneath the island has been destroyed long ago. But alas, a team of Texas A&M researchers discovered the underground military structure still standing by using ground penetrating radar. When asked by media affiliates about the find, and what the base used to be, Texas A&M professor Mark Everett explained that, “from 1850 to 1907 was the era of Fort Acatraz”.

Indeed, professor. It turns out that the military base had primarily been used during the Civil War as a line of defense. Its location wasn’t exactly in the midst of battle (the base never saw a shot fired, in fact).

Due to the lack of action and Island-setting, it stood as a safe haven for confederate sympathizers who denounced the federal government. The fort was believed to be destroyed when the main prison building

was assembled in 1915.

Turns out that’s not the case. With radar revealing tunnels that date back to before 1915, we now know the structure was never fully destroyed. This leads some people to believe that the military has been using the base all along! What’s hilarious is that this base was proven to exist just a few months after people were reportedly trying to sneak out of tour groups while at the prison to find a secret room underneath the island as portrayed in the 2012-2013 Fox drama Alcatraz. Maybe J.J. Abrams knew something we didn’t and that’s the real reason the show was cancelled? Doubtful, but the discovery has brought up a lot of questions.

In fact, the internet has gone wild in speculation, accusing the secret base of being used for torture, science experiments, and military technology research. If any of those things are true, whoever is living down there better bail quickly, before the A&M crew breaks in for further evaluation.

It just goes to show, once again, that we can make something out of nothing. Actually, I’m impressed what the internet has enabled people to do based on what was a seemingly small news story. In a month or so, there will probably be an entire website dedicated to theories about this underground prison. In my estimation, this story just makes an already interesting place even more fascinating.

Melons - Start seeds indoors around the end of April and transplant after there is no chance of frost. Melon roots are also fragile so plant carefully.

My recommendation is that you ignore the crazies. Take the story for what it is and just put some trust in the medi- ah, who am I kidding? Read everything and anything that tells you the media is lying. Basically, a career in journalism is just learning how to lie without getting in too much trouble.

DIRECT SOW OR TRANSPLANT? Part One

So I say read the conspiracy theories and wild accusations. Take it all in. I mean, someone has to hold the media accountable after one of these stories eventually turns out to be totally false. Someone has to lead the revolution. You can never be sure if they’re being honest with you. Take for example this story – can you honestly say right now that I didn’t just make the whole thing up?

Transplants can be planted outdoors in early June.

Squash - Both summer squash and winter squash can be started indoors in early April and transplanted outside around the end of May. Squash roots are also fragile so plant carefully.

Tomatoes - Select tomato varieties with the shortest days to maturity and start seed indoors around the middle of March. Be especially diligent about hardening off your tomatoes before planting outside and wait until there is no chance of frost.

Be sure to harden off any transplants before leaving them outside by setting your plant out during the day and gradually introducing them to more sun and wind.

If it’s too late to start seed indoors than transplants can be found at your local garden centers.

LONELINESS: THE CONSTANT HEARTACHE WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR LONELINESS?

“What do you do that causes her to treat you that way?” was a question my counseling professor, Fr. Dr. Robert McEniry (Creighton University), taught his students to ask in a marriage counseling situation. The question presupposes that the responsibility for what happens between married partners is on each of them, not just one of them.

A lonely person should ask a similar question: What do I do that causes people to treat me the way they do?

All emotional healing begins with selfinventory and an acceptance of personal responsibility for who you are, how you act, and what happens to you.

First, look within. Listen to what you tell yourself about yourself. If you constantly agonize over your worthlessness and your inability to make friends, you are your own worst enemy. You defeat yourself before you begin. Your very thoughts deter personal growth and the development of social skills.

Your next step out of loneliness is to develop the habit of positive self talk.

It will not be easy because it has taken you years of practice to be perpetually down on yourself. Listen carefully for words such as “I can’t” or “It’s too difficult,” or “I tried that once and it didn’t work.”

Your actions are a result of your thoughts so if you keep telling yourself you cannot do this or will not go there, you can’t and you won’t. Change your conversation about yourself and you will discover a happier, friendlier self than you have ever known.

Now take it a step farther. Examine every aspect of your life. Take an objective look at how you dress, move, talk, groom yourself, etc. Do you look

lonely? Do you walk lonely? Do you talk lonely? If you do, guess what?

Now the really BIG step: Change something. Fix something. Isn’t that way too fast? -- C.K. ANSWER: Pulse and heartbeat are one and the same. When the heart ejects blood, a pressure pulse is created in the all the body’s arteries. You can feel the pulse beat in the neck, the ankle or the thumb side of the wrist.

A normal pulse rate (heartbeat) is 60 to 100 times a minute. Your 100 is normal, but at the high end of normal.

Since you have no symptoms, you don’t have to rush to see a doctor. But at your next exam, mention your high pulse rate.

The doctor can judge if conditions that lead to a fast heartbeat need to be investigated.

An overactive thyroid gland and anemia are two such conditions.

MID-WINTER WORKOUT STILL GOING STRONG

I

’m actually working out on a daily basis this winter. Unlike prior winters, where I could always find an excuse to avoid going to the gym -- it’s cold, it’s snowing, it takes too long to get there and back -- I’ve finally figured out how to get around my own faulty reasoning.

A few months ago I wrote about purchasing a small manual treadmill, hoping that this would finally do the trick for me. I’ve put the treadmill in the living room (it leans up next to the wall when not in use), along with a selection of hand weights on the end table next to the lamp. And it works.

While it’s not a full gym workout, it’s still a bit of exercise. I can watch the television while I walk, and have even used the seniors walking workout CD

The small hand weights have been useful, but I’m ready to upgrade to slightly heavier ones. Hint: Start with light weights, or you might get discouraged and not use them at all.

The wrist and ankle weights have been used only a few times, as they can cause joint pain if put on the wrong place. For the wrist weights, it lessens the stress on joints if used farther up the arm, say halfway to the elbow. And ankle weights need a lot of padding underneath, but still won’t stay in place if walking. They do work for seated leg raises, however.

customer. The one area where Holmes isn’t afraid to spend, however, is on his employees, who he says deserve to be paid well.

“We expect a lot from our employees. We compensate them fairly, and we expect them to participate,” says Holmes. “Life is not a spectator sport, so you need to get in the game.”

IN A JIFFY I

’m a Southern girl, so corn muffins and cornbread are a big part of a complete meal around our house. I have a wonderful recipe for cornbread from “scratch” when I have time to make it, usually on weekends. On weekdays, I reach for my trusty blue box of Jiffy Corn Muffin Mix. Jiffy mixes are produced by the Chelsea Milling Company, operated by a family whose roots in the flour milling business date back to the early 1800s.

“We have been milling flour here in Chelsea for over 120 years,” says company president Howdy S. Holmes.

His grandmother, Mabel White Holmes, developed and introduced the company’s first prepared baking-mix product, Jiffy Baking Mix, in the spring of 1930. It now offers a variety of Jiffy mixes from muffins, brownies, cakes and frostings to pizza, pie crusts and their best-selling corn muffin mix.

The company is built on a simple recipe -offer customers the highest-quality ingredients at the best price possible.

“I think our consumers appreciate what we do, and that’s to offer value,” says Holmes.

Thanks to Chelsea Milling Company’s success, Holmes says he’s reluctant to mess with the business model.

“Everyone’s always in a hurry to change things,” says Holmes. “If something works, recognize you shouldn’t change it. You need to polish the system or the process from time to time, but if it works, leave it alone.”

Chelsea Milling Company is a complete manufacturer. The entire operation is located in Chelsea, Mich., and its product is shipped out to all 50 states, as well as some foreign countries through the U.S. military.

“Anytime you outsource something, there’s a profit number that doesn’t get calculated.

So we make our own boxes; we store our own wheat; we mill our own flour; we do our own packaging; we do our own mixing; we do our own logistics,” says Holmes.

1. For the stew: Brown ground beef, onion, garlic, chili powder, cumin, salt and pepper. Drain off any excess fat. Stir in tomato paste and brown sugar; cook, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes. Add tomatoes with green peppers, and the corn, and simmer for 10 minutes.

smallest and most useful inventions was the safety pin. In the mid-1800s, Hunt owed a friend $15. In order to come up with the cash to settle the debt, he decided to invent something. He picked up an 8-inch piece of brass wire he had on hand and made a coil in the middle of it, creating the spring action to open it. He then devised a clasp at one end to shield the user from the sharp point. After the device was patented in 1849, Hunt sold the patent to W.R. Grace and Company for $400, leaving himself with $385 after he paid the initial $15 debt. Incidentally, W.R. Grace and Company made millions of dollars from sales of the safety pin.

The Better Business Bureau has put out a notice that some of the credit cards that were stolen over the holidays have had a specific amount charged -$9.84 -- on millions of cards, calling it a new scam. But it’s not new. This small-amount scam has been going on for years. In the beginning, scammers would order a small item from an online drugstore then cancel the shipment once the card was verified as being good.

Why would scammers charge small amounts? From the scammers’ point of view, it’s still lucrative. If you charge 2 million credit cards and only put $2.50 on each one for your fake company, you still net $5 million. And using the smaller amounts makes it less likely that the thefts will be noticed, and the scam can continue for longer. Mostly, however, these small amounts are tests

• If you collect your mail and have it in the car with you, put the mail upside down on the seat if you leave the vehicle.

• Look carefully at your landline phone bill each month. If you’re charged for three-way calls you didn’t make, complain and have the charges taken off. Those charges can appear every month, and the phone companies call it a glitch.

• Also check your bank statement for odd amounts that you don’t understand.

Have them removed if the amounts are there by accident. For example, the computer might think you are paying for certain services and debit your account every month.

TRI-LAKES RELAY FOR LIFE TO HOLD KICKOFF EVENT

n Saturday, March 15th, the American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Tri Lakes will officially get underway as event volunteers and participants gather at Bass Pro Shops for a kickoff rally to launch their fundraising efforts for 2014. The rally will feature speakers from the community who have benefitted from the funds raised at Relay and will honor cancer survivors.

This also will be the first opportunity to register a team and/or commit a sponsorship for the overnight event to be held on August 2 – 3 at Lewis Palmer High School.
