But maybe it’s harder to place what music he’s created that we instantly recognize. Or maybe it’s not. If we were to say, “Like a good neighbor…”, would you reply, “State Farm is there?” Probably. And if you did, then you have just finished a jingle created by Barry Manilow. Not only was he a prolific singer, composer, arranger (the list goes on and on) but he created some of the most memorable jingles that have withstood the test of time. It was during this time that Manilow began developing his skills as a jingle writer, a source of income that helped sustain him well into the 1970s. As mentioned above, Manilow wrote the jingle for State Farm as well as the Band-Aid jingle that goes, “I am stuck on Band-Aid, ‘cause BandAid’s stuck on me.” Many of the jingles he either wrote or composed, sometimes both, and would often perform them as well. Some he only performed, such as jingles for Kentucky Fried Chicken, Pepsi, Dr Pepper and McDonald’s.
Barry Manilow was actually born Barry Alan Pincus. His parents, Harold Pincus and Edna Manilow welcomed their son on June 17, 1943 while they were living in Brooklyn, New York. As a young Jewish man, Barry decided to take his mother’s maiden name as his own last name at his bar mitzvah. Manilow graduated from Eastern District High School in Brooklyn in 1961 and immediately enrolled in the Julliard School of performing arts. To help pay for his bills during that time, Manilow also got a job working at CBS. That job proved to be a fateful decision for Manilow because it provided him the opportunity to meeting Bro Herrod in 1964, a director at CBS who wanted him to arrange some songs for a musical adaptation of a melodrama called “The Drunkard.”
Manilow managed to secure the position of musical director for the series “Callback” on WCBS-TV by 1967. He also worked to arrange a new theme song for The Law Show, while writing, producing and singing his jingles for radio and T.V, and simultaneously teamed up with Jeanne Lucas to perform as a duo for two seasons at New York’s “Upstairs at the Downstairs” club.

Manilow decided to write an entire original score instead, which Herrod used in the musical which debuted Off Broadway and maintained an eight-year stint at New York’s 13th Street Theatre. During that time, Manilow worked as a pianist, producer and arranger to make a living.
Barry Manilow’s road to success wasn’t all smooth sailing. In fact, he has several flops under his belt, three of which he recorded with a group of sessions musicians who called themselves “Featherbed.” Manilow said he was grateful for the lack of success

those songs achieved and it’s easy to see why when you fast-forward to 1971. At that time, Manilow was providing piano accompaniment for other artists during their auditions and performances when a certain lady (perhaps you’ve heard of her) named Bette Midler happened upon one of his performances. She was impressed with what he could do and decided to use his talent to help her produce her debut and sophomore albums, called The Divine Miss M and Better Midler. Manilow also acted as her musical director for her The Divine Miss M tour that followed. The pair worked together until 1975. Manilow continued to pursue his own solo career while helping Bette Midler and in July 1973, he released his debut album, Barry Manilow through Bell Records. His talent saved him from being dropped after Bell Records was taken over and became part of the newly-created Arista Records. The label’s top dog, Clive Davis dropped many artists but felt confident that he had a winner in Manilow after seeing him perform as Dionne Warwick’s opening act at the Schaefer Music Festival in Central Park on June 26, 1974. his second album which contained his No. one hit, “Mandy.” This song helped lay the groundwork for his rise to fame, although he did not actually write it himself. On Mar. 22, 1975 Manilow made his first of many appearances on American Bandstand. He struck up a friendship with Dick Clark which led to several appearances on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, American Bandstand anniversary shows and performances on the American Music Awards. Following his increasing popularity, Manilow made appearances in other entertainment arenas as well. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the television company ABC aired four variety specials that Manilow starred in and executive produced called, “The Barry Manilow Special.” On Mar. 2, 1977, his guest was Penny Marshall and the show aired to an audience of 37 million strong. His hard work for that special was rewarded with four Emmy nominations and won the Emmy for “Outstanding Comedy-Variety or Music Special.” His second special featuring Ray Charles in 1978 was also nominated for four Emmys. Manilow also tried his hand at acting when he portrayed Tony Starr in the 1985 CBS film based on his song, “Copacabana.” He wrote all the songs for the movie. Manilow had a hand in several other endeavors, including lobbying against a copyright bill that would do away with a blanket license for theme and incidental music and instead requires that payment is done on a per-use basis. He also published an autobiography called, “Sweet Life: Adventures on the Way to Paradise.” Manilow returned to Broadway with
his concert series called, “Manilow on Broadway” in 2013. His musical, “Harmony” started its second run in September 2013 at Atlanta’s Alliance Theatre and is booked for performances in Los Angeles for this year.

MANILOW SNIPPETZ • The hit song “Mandy” was originally titled “Brandy” but the name had to be changed. Clive Davis, Arista Records’ label chief vetoed it because another group called “Looking Glass” had released a song by that same name in 1972 under Davis’ Epic label. • The song “It’s a Miracle” has been Manilow’s opening song of choice at every show he’s ever performed. • Apparently even Barry Manilow isn’t immune to bouts of clumsiness; on Oct. 25, 1978, he fractured his ankle one hour prior to his debut at the Olympia Theatre. He had his ankle taped and went about his show, including the disco dance to his song “Copacabana.” • In 2003, he walked into a wall in the middle of the night, injuring his nose and passed out for several hours afterwards. He was reportedly fine and his nose was not permanently damaged.

WHICH IS BETTER: 3000 FRIENDS OR A JUST A FEW? By Dr. Ron Ross
“I have over three-thousand friends on my Facebook Page,” bragged a friend of mine. I checked it out, sure enough he did! It put to shame my measly little 410 Facebook “friends” total. Does the number of Facebook friends you have say anything about your real face-to-face relationships? Of course not. It only says you know how to work social media to your advantage. And if his “friends” are anything like my “friends” most of them never logon to Facebook. I can think of two real friends of mine, people with whom I have solid, enduring relationships; one of them has never had a Facebook page, and the one who is on Facebook has not posted anything for over two years. Let us agree, then, that the number of Facebook friends you have might say something about popularity, charisma or social networking savvy, but it has very little to say about the true meaning friendship. One real friend is worth more than 3000 Facebook friends for one big reason: real friends are, well, they are real! They are real people with a real interest in the real you. You do not need three-thousand synthetic Facebook friends, you need is one real friend, one person who will stay with you through thick and thin or, to use Facebook terms, someone who will not “unfriend” you when things get tough. This need for a sense of connectedness began the day you were born; you needed someone to attach yourself to immediately after birth. I watched as

This need for attachment never ends. When there is no one in our lives to whom we can turn to for comfort, consolation, or just conversation, we yearn for a friend, for someone who can end our emotional isolation. But, where do you go to find that one friend, that someone to talk to, to connect with, for someone to share your life?

This answer may be too simple, but I offer it anyway: Go where the good people are. Go where you can find people who will lift you up when you are down and who will cheer you when you succeed. When my brother completed his pilot training in the Navy he was far away from home, stationed on a base down south. He was a typical young man in his twenties and he was tired of being surrounded almost exclusively by men. He wanted to meet a nice girl to date.

W
hen we look at society and its typical values and beliefs, they usually fall in the category of ‘be like everyone else’ type of mentality. I call that group thinking and another teacher defines it as a ‘group mind’. As children grow up, they are usually taught to observe and act like everyone else. When a child does this successfully, a reward usually follows. When a child diverts from this, a punishment is usually the follow-up. Why do we instill in children the need to be in a group mind or a group mentality?
While most of his flying buddies went to a bar to see if they could pick up some chicks, he went to church. After a few Sundays, he met a very lovely lady his age with whom he often had lunch after church and whom he almost married. Do you need one good friend? Where do the good people you would like to befriend go? Wherever that is, go there. Make yourself available and you will meet someone who, given enough time and tender nurturing, will become your friend.
Many people grow up with the notion that it is simply safer to think, act, and live like everyone else or at least like everyone in the community or neighborhood. To a degree, this is true. If you maintain the group thinking, you do not risk ridicule, punishment, or judgment for the most part. If you attempt to leave the group thinking, you are at risk of ridicule and judgment. So for simplicity’s sake, it’s seemingly easier and safer to stay in the box.

When a child is encouraged and/or forced to suppress his or her individuality, that child may grow into a teenager who tries to fit in-and that can mean drugs, alcohol, and anger. That teenager may grow into an adult who simply goes with the flow and never pursuing his or her passion in life. Then that adult may turn fifty years old and ask him or herself, “What am I doing?” That adult may realize that he or she has been existing for fifty years for the only purpose of earning an income and caring for the family. There must be much more to life than that! If your children want to express their individuality, creativity, or personality and they are not allowed to for whatever reason, there will be consequences. Those consequences may occur in childhood, adolescence, or adulthood, but they will occur. When individuality is not allowed, suppression occurs. That suppression turns into compression over time. That compression turns into a depression. The depression may demonstrate itself through lack of passion, boredom, and simply existing through life with zero adventure and passion for living. Just as children need time to play, run, and interact with each other, they also need to express who they really are as a human being without anyone forcing them to be a particular personality. They’re worth it.

SMELLY TONSIL STONES COMMON IN YOUNG ADULTS DEAR DR. DONOHUE: What is the best way to get rid of tonsil stones, besides sticking my finger down my throat as far as I can and trying to dislodge the smelly things? More importantly, what is the way to prevent tonsil stones? I never had them until a year or so ago. -- S.M. ANSWER: Tonsil stones, or tonsilloliths, are the not uncommon (one study reported them in 7 percent of young adults) but seldom discussed clusters of calcified material that lodge in the tonsils. Your tonsils, those oval-shaped swellings on the sides of the back of your throat, are important for the cells of the immune system. Tonsilloliths form in the crypts (deep valleys) of the tonsil, and sometimes are visible as white or yellow spots when looking in the mirror. They become bothersome if they are large enough to cause discomfort or difficulty swallowing, but often they are noticed because of their unpleasant odor. Tonsilloliths often spontaneously come out of the tonsils; they usually are described as waxy or hard, with a peculiar odor. I don’t recommend sticking your finger in the back of your throat. The gag reflex can be very strong, and the tonsils have a very good blood supply, so damaging them can be very bloody. Some authorities recommend removal using the tongue attachment of a Waterpik (or similar device), but I have had general success with saltwater gargles. Very large or recurrent tonsilloliths are an indication for a visit to the ENT doctor.

ave you noticed that your muscles seem to get weaker as you get older? It’s thought that starting at age 40, we lose about 1 percent of muscle mass each year. Multiple studies have questioned whether that muscle loss is true aging or whether it’s from disuse. One particular study compared “master athletes” (recreational athletes who seriously exercised four to five times a week) who were 40 to 80 years old. Researchers measured leg strength, muscle mass and fat content of their muscles. They even took MRI scans of cross sections of the muscles of those at various ages who exercised versus those who didn’t. They discovered that the loss of muscle mass and strength was not due to aging alone. Senior athletes had almost as much leg muscle as the younger athletes. There was little fat in the muscles of senior athletes. There was little loss of strength.

Here’s my theory, after viewing the photos: We might not get back all the muscles and strength we had when we were very active and younger, but we can get back some of it, even if we’ve been sedentary for years. At the very least we can maintain what we have and avoid further loss of strength. Here’s what we get with regular exercise: • Physical stability: Our core muscles and legs can hold us up, keeping us strong and agile. Without that strength, we’re more likely to suffer from falls and broken bones.

The fact that I know the exact time and date are not due to a diligent amount of this reporter’s research. No, seldom to I delve into an article with all of my facts straight. The reason I’m so precise on the details of the event is because I was unwillingly subject to its information over and over and over again. I heard it on the radio first. Then I saw it on facebook and twitter. Then it hit cable news. Then, the unthinkable happened! The asteroid flew on by and nothing about our lives changed; just as the experts predicted.

What about the Bird or Swine flu? Yes, I understand that these were serious illnesses that actually killed people, but they weren’t nearly as infectious as the media had us believe. I remember watching a television movie about how the Bird Flu could wipe out 75% of the world’s population in 3-years. I’m pretty sure that aired in 2008…
Yes, everything went according to plan. So why all the media hype? Because, America, we as a culture are obsessed with the end of the world. I call it Apocalyptic Fever (copy write @ Nick Snips, 2014), and the temperature on our fictitious forehead keeps rising. Why do you think these Zombie movies and television shows keep blowing up? It’s to feed our addiction to doom
Don’t get me wrong; I’m not here to blame the media. The more people poor their money into the terror machine, the more post-apocalyptic nonsense we’ll be fed.

We need to collectively take a deep breath and forget about what we cannot control. Yes, someday a giant asteroid may hit the Earth and we’ll all be gone. Just. Like. That. But guess what, you can’t do anything about it! That’s a beautiful place to be in. You have no control over the universe; so stop pretending you might. Live life to the fullest. I know that’s cliché, but it’s what you need to do. Don’t constantly waste your time by reading up on the million different ways the planet could end tomorrow. Ponder on how you can enjoy God’s playground we call Earth today. ROAST UP A FEAST OF FLAVORS
R
oasting meats and vegetables is one of the oldest cooking techniques in human history. The earliest form of cooking was probably the direct heat method -- placing raw meat into an open fire. Roasting via indirect heat was probably an accident. Raw meat was left near the fire, cooking the side closest to the heat. Eventually, somebody thought of putting the meat on a stick, and turning it so that all of the sides cooked evenly -- and spitroasting was born. The earliest ovens were made of earth and clay and were found in Central Europe. An earth oven is one of the key indicators of human civilization. It is one of the most common artifacts archaeologist look for at an anthropological dig. Typically, a pit was dug into the ground and then heated, usually by rocks or smoldering debris. The food was wrapped in leaves and set on top of the heat source, then covered with earth. Cooking times are usually long, as the food is cooked by slow roasting. This type of earth oven has been used by many cultures. In pre-dynastic Egypt, each mud-brick house had an oven. The ceramic oven is built of clay or another ceramic material, and takes different forms depending on the culture. It is one of the earliest forms of our modern ovens. In India, it is referred to as a “tandoor.� Ovens were used to cook food and to make bricks. Brick is another ceramic material and was used to make ovens popular in Italy. With no need for spits or constantly turning the food over a fire, oven roasting was born. High-heat roasting concentrates the flavor of meats and vegetables and brings out their natural sweetness. Best of all, it can be done year-round -- on the grill in good weather and in the oven during cold weather. There’s no comparison between roasted and steamed vegetables. Roasted veggies have browning, carmelization and crisp edges and texture, which adds to their flavor. Roasted vegetables also add wonderful flavors to dishes without a lot of fat and calories. Roasting garlic, potatoes and carrots can work wonders as fat substitutes in recipes for mashed vegetables, sauces, cream soups and casseroles. You can spread six cloves of roasted garlic over a slice of bread as you would butter. This recipe for Oven Roasted Vegetable Hash is the perfect way to roast up a feast of flavors using your favorite seasonal vegetables!
3 to 3-1/2 pounds root vegetables, in any combination* 2 cups broccoli or cauliflower florets 2 medium yellow onions, peeled 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, rendered bacon or pancetta fat or brown butter, or a mixture of the oils 1 tablespoon poultry seasoning 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 1 teaspoon honey or sugar 1 tablespoon salt 4 ounces aged goat cheese 1. Preheat oven to 450 F. 2. Peel the root vegetables. Cut celery root into 1-inch-thick slices, then cut each slice into 1/4- to 1/3-inch thick strips; cut crosswise to make 1/4- to 1/3-inch dice. If any of the other vegetables are thicker than 1-1/2 inches in diameter, cut them lengthwise in half, then cut crosswise into 1/4- to 1/3-inch-thick slices. Cut the onions into eights through the root ends, leaving the wedges intact. 3. Line a heavy-rimmed baking pan with foil or parchment paper. Place the oil into a large bowl. Mix the oil with the poultry seasoning, pepper, sugar and 1/2 tablespoon of the salt. Place the onions into the oil and toss to coat. Lay the onion wedges cut-side down in one corner of the pan. 4. Place the rest of the vegetables into the bowl and mix with remaining oil until wellcoated. Scatter the root vegetables over the rest of the pan. Sprinkle the vegetables with the remaining 1/2 tablespoon of the salt. 5. Roast, turning the vegetables every 15 minutes or so with a spatula, until tender and golden, about 45 minutes. The cooked hash can be stored, covered, in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Warm in a nonstick skillet over moderate heat before serving. To Prep Ahead: Mix the vegetables with the seasoned oil, and cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap. Set aside at room temperature. Proceed with the instructions for roasting the vegetables. Makes 4 to 6 servings. *Root vegetables include parsnips, carrots, celery root, parsley root, turnips, white or sweet potatoes, acorn or butternut squash, Brussels sprouts, asparagus, green beans and garlic. hroughout the Bible the number forty has been associated with change. It is often a period set aside for fasting and prayer in anticipation and preparation for events yet to come. March 5th, Ash Wednesday, marked the beginning of another forty days – 40 Days for Life. During these forty days of Lent, Christians across America will be gathering in front of Planned Parenthood to pray, to worship and to be a public witness to God’s love – to stand up for life. It is estimated that on average 3,300 babies are killed each day by abortions performed in the United States. That’s one child’s death every 30 seconds – over a million deaths every year. Last year Planned Parenthood alone was responsible for over 333,000 of those abortions and received
nearly $542,000,000 in government – read taxpayer – funding. The culture of death has become big business. Unfortunately too many Christians, without even knowing it, are profiting from the business of abortion. They are not doing so through their checkbooks, but it is being done on their behalf, stealthily, through their investments. I recently screened the holdings of the largest index mutual fund in America, the Vanguard 500 Index Fund. Over 72% of the assets held in that fund are of companies involved in activities and industries that most Christians would find morally objectionable, with over 32% involved in the industry of death. Either as a contributor to organizations like Planned Parenthood, or as a manufacturer of the morning after pill and contraceptives, or as a provider of abortions at for profit facilities and hospitals, or by involvement in embryonic stem cell research and experimentation, or by making abortion on demand part of their employee benefit package. stand alone. Sadly, when I have run the same moral screens on many other mutual funds I have found their investments too put Christian shareholders in a place of moral compromise. Though the percentages change from fund to fund, companies financially involved in the abortion industries are major profit centers for the vast majority of mutual funds. So how can we manage our investments and stay true to our pro-life values?
Set aside time each day to pray for the end of abortion. Take an hour out of your week and join fellow Christians in the 40 Days for Life Vigil (www.40daysforlife. com/coloradosprings). And, finally, take a look at your investments and find out where you are making your money.
Fortunately there are a number of mutual fund companies that have made life a core value in their portfolios excluding all companies that have any financial interest in the abortion industry. By moving Christ to the center of their investments portfolios many of these mutual fund companies have found that you can do well by doing what is right.
