In 536, widespread crop failures led to famine in Ireland and historians blame the cause on a possible volcanic winter, although there is no definitive evidence.

It’s true that Ireland has a long rich history. And it would be great to be able to start from the beginning and relay all the incredible tidbits of history that we could find . . . but we can’t. Suffice it to say that mankind’s presence on this island can be traced back to around 8000 B.C. when Mesolithic hunter-gatherers migrated to Ireland.

Nearly 30 years later, Ireland began to flourish during the Golden Ages. Monastic schools were established at Iona and Clonfert by Columba and Brendan, respectively. Other similar schools soon followed.

Agriculture on the island makes its appearance around 4000 B.C. based on analysis of sites such as the Céide Fields in Mayo. Around 3500 B.C., during the Neolithic period, people of the Boyne Valley built a series of incredibly complex chamber tombs, upright standing stones and enclosures that took them over 100 years to complete.

NOT QUITE SO LONG AGO . . . In 852, Vikings land in Dublin Bay. Ivar Beinlaus and Olaf the White built a fortress where they landed, which happens to be located close to where the city of Dublin proper stands now.

The Bronze Age around 2000 B.C. brought new weapons technologies to Ireland, leading to the creation of flat axes and eventually to copper mining on Mount Gabriel in County Cork and Ross Island in County Kerry.

The year 980 marks the date when the King of Dublin, Ola Cuaran, abdicated his throne to Máel Sechnaill mac Domnaill after the king’s army lost at the Battle of Tara. Eight years later, Máel Sechnaill demanded a tribute from the Vikings at Dublin and this date is often considered the founding date of Dublin as a city.

In 140 A.D., Ptolemy wrote the book, “Geographia.” It provided the first recorded reference to a human settlement in an area near Dublin, called Eblana Civitas. In 431, Palladius was sent to Ireland by Pope Celestine to be the first bishop to the Irish believing in Christ.

On April 23, 1014, the armies of Brian Boru defeated Máel Mórda mac Murchada and his Viking forces. It was at this time that the Viking power in Ireland began a definitive decline.

In 432, St. Patrick returned to Ireland from Great Britain after about 15 years of religious training to become an ordained priest. St. Patrick, who was born in Great Britain and taken prisoner and held on Ireland for six years, escaped and walked over

In 1171 Henry II of England arrives at Waterford and declared himself the Lord of Ireland. Four years later, the Treaty of Windsor was drafted between England and Ireland, solidifying Henry II’s claim as Lord of Ireland but also allotting certain

benefits to the previous Irish King, Ruaidrí Ua Conchobair. The Great Charter of Ireland, drafted on Nov. 12, 1216 (but not delivered to Ireland until February of the following year), was essentially the Magna Carta for Ireland. About 50 years later, the first representative Irish Parliament, made up of the Lordship of Ireland, met in Dublin. By 1315, it’s clear that the Irish were resentful of England’s presence on their island. On May 26, Edward Bruce arrives and helps to rally and lead many Irish lords in an uprising against the English attempting to maintain control in Ireland. Naturally, this didn’t sit well with the English who made repeated attempts to assuage and overrule Irish attempts to rule themselves. In 1472, the Annals of the Four Masters records indicate that the King of England at the time sent an exotic animal to Ireland, possibly a giraffe and possibly as a peace-offering (or a bribe). Then, in 1494, England’s Lord Deputy of Ireland under the rule of Henry VII, Edward Poyning issued a declaration he called Poynings’ Law which ultimately forbade the Irish parliament from passing any laws without first obtaining consent from the English parliament. This pattern of attempted control continued into the 1500s when in 1542, Irish parliament passed the Crown of Ireland Act. The act established a Kingdom of Ireland that was to be ruled by Henry VIII of England. In 1575, the Annals of the Four Masters

record a draught, possibly the third in the last several hundred years that resulted in widespread disease and plague. Over the next nearly 70 years, the country rebels against English control, especially that of Elizabeth I who had been dubbed a heretic by Pope Pius in 1570.

MORE RECENT STILL . . . On Oct. 22, 1641 the Irish Rebellion of 1641 began and Phelim O’Neill led the fight and captured several forts in the north of Ireland. By 1642, the Irish Confederate Wars were in full swing, much of it having to do with the intolerance of Catholicism in the country and the Irish Catholic Confederation was established. In 1646, the Supreme Council of the Confederation signed an agreement with one of England’s King Charles I, which allowed for some rights for Catholics in the country in return for their military support of England. However, once word got out of this new arrangement, the members of the Supreme Council were arrested and the Irish General Assembly renounced the agreement with England.

The century to follow was filled with civil unrest. By 1919, the country turned its sights to England once again and issued a Declaration of Independence from the United Kingdom. Two years later, on May 3, Northern Ireland was established. That same year, the Irish War of Independence began which resulted in the signing of the Anglo-Irish Treaty and the creation of the Irish Free State.

719.963.7438

The Irish Civil began in 1922 and by 1937, the leadership of Ireland developed the Constitution of Ireland, replacing the Irish Free State with a new state, simply called Ireland. While the country is relatively peaceful now, history indicates that Ireland has been plagued with unrest both within the natives and by outside forces attempting to control a new nation. In this month of celebration, it’s important to remember the struggles that were had to reach this point. And to remember one important phrase: Erin go Bragh!

One year later, another agreement was reached with England which promised tolerance of Catholicism, a repeal of Poynings’ Law and legitimization of lands taken by Irish Catholics during the Confederate Wars. On Aug. 27, 1798, after years of fending off invasions from the French, the Irish and French band together to defeat the British at the Battle of Castlebar. On Jan. 1, 1801, Ireland is annexed to Great Britain, forming the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.

The country as a whole was moving forward in a generally good way until 1845 when the Great Irish Famine occurred. Two-thirds of the country’s potato crop, a staple in their diet at the time, was destroyed which led to about one million deaths and the emigration of another million people to other countries in search of prosperity.

Identify your unmet needs. Do you need a special friend or would you prefer a larger circle of friends? Perhaps you need to learn the fine art of being alone to think, rest, or reflect. It may be that you need to improve your self-esteem so you feel worthy of having friends. Identify your needs then take action to meet those needs.

B

There are five realities of loneliness that every lonely person must come to terms with, and there are five actions you can take to overcome it.

THE FIVE REALITIES OF LONELINESS First of all, loneliness is a common experience. Indeed, who has not been lonely at one time or another? The second reality is that loneliness is not a permanent state. Just because you are lonely today does not mean that you will spend the next decade or two by yourself unless you decide to isolate yourself from the rest of the world. Third, loneliness is a condition that you can do something about. You cannot change the fact that you are short or tall nor can you change your ethnic heritage, but you can do something about your lonesomeness. Fourth, sometimes loneliness has value. Solitude can help an individual reflect on their goals, actions, and the direction of their life. With discernment, loneliness can promote personal growth. Fifth, loneliness is an indicator of unmet needs. Healthy humans have healthy relationships. Extended loneliness suggests you have some vacant places in your life

arbra Streisand sang in her portrayal of Fanny Bryce in Funny Girl? “People who like people are the luckiest people in the world.” Notice she did not sing, “People who are liked by other people are the luckiest people in the world.” Yet that is what many lonely people think. Barbra’s lesson is: You must like people first then they will like you.

that need filling.

Take a personal inventory on yourself. Do you have personality quirks that put off people? Are you authentically you? How do you sound when you speak? What kind of words do you use? Are you affirming or critical? Are you pleasant or grumpy? Are you positive or negative? What about the way your dress or groom yourself? Someone once said, “The law of the positive attracts and builds, the law of the negative repels and destroys.”

LIFE ENERGY FLOW TAI YI - WHAT THE HECK IS IT?

Put yourself in situations or places where you can meet the kind of people you want to meet. Then reach out to others and affirm them, encourage them, or help them. Once you place yourself in these new and interesting situations don’t just show up, get involved.

T

he Tai Yi in Life Energy Flow Tai Yi means Supreme Health or Supreme Balance in English. When everything is in total balance, there is no pain: mental, emotional or physical. Pain is an indicator that something is out of balance. It’s not wrong or bad to have pain, but most would rather live without it.

Smile more. Author Dennis Waitley wrote, “A smile is the light in your window that tells others there is a caring, sharing person inside.” Live by the law of the harvest: You reap what you sow. Treat other people the same way you want to be treated. Be a friend first, then you will get a friend or two or three or even more!

Tai Yi works with the meridian system of the body, very similar to acupuncture. Our body has many blood vessels; this we know. What many do not know is that our body carries many meridians as well. A meridian can be described as a place through which energy moves. I describe a meridian as a water pipe. If the pipes in your home are full of gunk, rust, and otherwise nastiness, the water is contaminated and slow to arrive to your sink or bathtub. The water pressure may be low. The meridian system is similar.

Your loneliness is cured when you learn how to be with other people while being your very best and most authentic self.

Additional columns on this subject are available on: www.RonRossToday.com Do you have a tale of loneliness or other comments on this column? Share them with Dr. Ross by sending him an email: Dr.Ross@RonRossToday.com. ©2014 Dr. Ronald D. Ross All Rights Reserved

Our own life force energy needs to move efficiently and to the appropriate locations in a form of balance. For example, you don’t want ALL energy going to your lungs and very little arriving to your heart, liver, kidneys, or other organs. You want your body to work in balance so that all parts of your body are receiving the appropriate amount of uncontaminated energy. In this case, you would feel excited, passionate, healthy, and have sufficient amount of energy throughout the day.

If this is not the case, the meridian system of your body has issues in various locations. This can be in your brain, lungs, heart, back/spine, kidneys, adrenals, and multiple other areas you’d like to function at 100%. Tai Yi treatments are structured in such a way that they treat a very specific ailment. Do you have memory issues, immune system issues, or fatigue? What about heart disease or digestive issues? Anger, fear and depression certainly play a role in your quality of life as well and can be addressed through Tai Yi. There are over 4,000 treatments in Tai Yi and each specifically addresses an ailment of concern. When a person’s hormones are out of balance-due to giving birth and/or menopause, Tai Yi can address it through the treatment Hormonal Human. Many have thyroid issues too, and Abnormal Thyroid treatment works great after Hormonal Human has been offered. What is important to note about Tai Yi, is that it requires full participation on the recipient’s part. The Tai Yi practitioner will consult with the client on how to maximize the energy treatment to its full potential after the treatment is complete. Then it’s the client’s responsibility to follow through on the suggestions to see results. Given this, Life Energy Flow Tai Yi is the most powerful (and ancient) energy treatment available.

SIDELINED BY CRAMPS DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I hope you can help me with a problem that might get me kicked off the first string. I get cramps in my legs, mostly in the calves. At first, it was laughable. Now it’s not. At practices, I can sit down and wait for the cramp to go. During a game, I have to be replaced. How do I stop them? -- B.L. ANSWER: I have to tell readers that what I say applies to exercise-associated muscle cramps and not to the cramps that so many older people get when in bed. They’re both the same phenomenon, an involuntary, sustained and painful contraction of a muscle or muscles. But they’re not the same when it comes to the situation that brings them on. The actual cause is a matter that experts have debated for years. A lack of potassium, calcium or magnesium, excessive exercise, cold weather, hot weather and dehydration have been cited as possible causes. None has been proven to be the universal cause. Muscle fatigue is another possibility. Some experts say that muscle fatigue affects the muscles’ response to spinal cord signals that prevent cramping. Suggestions to forestall cramps are many. Hydration is a reasonable approach. An hour before a game or an exercise session, drink a quart of water. That gives enough time for the water to be absorbed. During play, keep drinking. If you are drinking a lot of fluid, switch to a sports drink to prevent

• On March 17, 1834, Gottlieb Daimler, who in 1890 founded an engine and car company bearing his name, is born in Germany. In 1885, he and Wilhelm Maybach developed a new version of the four-stroke internal-combustion engine, which they attached to a wooden bicycle, creating what has been referred to as the world’s first motorcycle.

• On March 18, 1942, the War Relocation Authority is created to “take all people of Japanese descent into custody.â€? Earl Warren (who would go on to become chief justice of the Supreme Court) claimed that a lack of evidence of sabotage among the Japanese population proved nothing, as they were merely biding their time.

THE HISTORY CHANNEL

• On March 19, 1842, French writer de Balzac’s play “Les Ressources de Quinolaâ€? opens to an empty house, thanks to a failed publicity stunt. Hoping to create a buzz, the writer circulated a rumor that tickets were sold out. Unfortunately, most of his fans stayed home.

• On March 21, 1963, Alcatraz Prison in San Francisco Bay closes down and transfers its last prisoners. At its peak use in the 1950s, “The Rock,â€? or “America’s Devil Island,â€? housed more than 200 inmates at the maximum-security facility.

• On March 20, 1852, Harriet Beecher Stowe’s anti-slavery novel, “Uncle Tom’s Cabin,â€? is published. The book was so widely read that when President Abraham Lincoln met Stowe, he reportedly said, “So this is the little lady who made this big war.â€?

• On March 23, 1983, Barney Clark dies, 112 days after becoming the world’s first recipient of a permanent artificial heart. The 61-year-old dentist spent the last four months of his life at the University of Utah Medical Center attached to a 350-pound console that pumped air in and out of the aluminum-and-plastic implant through a system of hoses.

RISKS OF LEAVING A NURSING HOME

L

eaving a nursing home to go into home/community care has to be a great feeling. But a study done at the University of Minnesota shows that medically, it might not be the wisest move. Researchers looked at whether there were any differences in the rate of rehospitalizations between Medicaid nursing home and Medicaid home/ community care. Yes, there were, and the numbers are dramatic. The study compared patients over age 65 who stayed in a nursing home at least 90 days before going into home/ community care with those who had a nursing-home stay of at least 90 days and then stayed in the nursing home. Leaving a nursing home increased the possibility of having a preventable re-

REBEL WITH A CAUSE by Nick Yanez

I

t hasn’t yet been a year. No, in fact, it was last May that the epic legend of Edward Snowden began. On the 20th of that month, the 30-year old rebel began his journey to exposing the NSA by arriving in Hong Kong with four laptops that gave him the access to some of the Government’s most classified documents. Snowden is something of a rarity in these times. Though his story has been told to death on national news networks, the American people cannot decide if he is a patriot or a traitor. And to be fair to our undecided society – it’s complicated. If you don’t know Edward Snowden or what why he is famous, please take the time to Google it thoroughly.

The Money Follows the Person program seems to be at the root of this. The MFP helps states with the costs of long-term care support with an emphasis on reducing the use of nursing homes and other medical institutions. The Affordable Care Act of 2010 has funded it through 2016 to the tune of $450 million for each year. While it’s all well and good that the goal of some states is to use diversion programs to move patients out of nursing homes, it’s not necessarily good for the patient ... or the financial bottom line if the patient ends up in the hospital.

Home Care

Consider the differences: Nursing homes and hospitals have medical care 24 hours a day as they work with doctors and perform required assessments. Home/community workers have less medical background (if any), no doctors are necessarily involved and no assessments are required.

With over 45 years of healthcare management experience, Amada will provide you with peace of mind in any given situation. Whether it’s post surgical recovery, disability, or illness, our Personal Care Coordinators and professional staff are here for you around the clock to meet your home care needs.

The study offered this conclusion: If patients are to be sent out to home/ community, they need long-term care, medical providers and a care plan at the time they go.

The reason I bring up this slightly outdated person of interest is not because of what Snowden has done, but what he is now doing. Last week, critically acclaimed culture and arts festival South By Southwest (SXSW) Festival kicked off in Austin, TX with a bang. The festival is most known for showcasing new movies and music, as well as featuring special guest speakers who are considered to have relevant ideas about pursuing success in today’s society. SXSW decided to step up their game this year by reaching out to the one and only Edward Snowden. In fact, they kicked off the Day 4 of the 10 day festival with Snowden being the center of an open conference via satellite.

Long-Term Care Insurance is a valuable tool to protect your family’s assets. If your loved one has purchased a policy, the next step is to understand and strategize how to best utilize the policy.

The Veterans Aid & Attendance Pension provides wartime veterans and their surviving spouses with tax-free financial aid for senior care needs.

The American fugitive fielded questions from his legal counsel, audience members, and spectators over Twitter. The event was highly controversial and even prompted some members of congress to write derogatory letters to the festival organizers. That, of course, didn’t stop them from holding what has been their most publicized event in years.

Snowden criticized the federal government throughout the conference call, but focused more on inspiring folks who control the internet through code and encryption to try to make it impossible for the government to record our emails, phone calls, and internet history. In another quote he presses the American people to stand up, “We need public oversight ... some way for trusted public figures to advocate for us. We need a watchdog that watches Congress, because if we’re not informed, we can’t consent to these policies.”

I don’t think I can ever remember a fugitive of the state holding an internet web chat to an audience of thousands and thunderous applause. But as we know, Snowden is one of a kind. The NSA leaker aimed his message to-

Somehow, far away in his Russian hideout, Snowden found a way to talk to the American people for the first time since he fled our country last June, with no consequences. There’s no denying Edward Snowden’s rare intelligence. But is he a hero or a villain? Sometimes the best hero’s appear to be the antagonist at first, and vice versa. The truth is only time will tell if Snowden is a champion of the people, or a rebel force trying to destroy those who keep us safe. One thing is for certain – he’s an entertainer. Alongside the most exciting up-and-coming bands and filmmakers in America, Snowden stole the show.

ST. PATRICK’S DAY FEAST

S

t. Patrick’s Day celebrates all things Irish, including the color green. Why not enjoy the holiday by going green and healthier with your traditional St. Patrick’s Day feast? Corned beef and cabbage is a favorite meal on St. Patrick’s Day, but some folks may want to cut back on the fat and calories. Brisket is naturally high in fat, but there are ways to reduce it. One way is to trim away any excess fat from the meat before it is cooked. Another is to cook the meat a day ahead of time and refrigerate it. Once the meat cools, the fat will harden and can be skimmed off. The type of brisket you buy also makes a difference. A flat half brisket would have 191 calories and 6 grams of fat per 3.5 ounce serving. The same amount of point half brisket has 244 calories and nearly 14 grams of fat. Whole brisket has 218 calories and 10 grams of fat. Leaving a 1/4-inch trim of fat almost doubles the calories in all of the brisket cuts. One of the lowestcalorie briskets is the one in which all the fat is trimmed. Potatoes are another favorite Irish food. Potatoes are not very high in calories and have no fat, but making them with lots of butter and high-fat milk adds fat. Keep the holiday tradition alive but reduce the calories by serving a side of Low-Fat Buttermilk Mashed Potatoes. The secret is the buttermilk, which adds a creamy texture and buttery flavor. Save calories by baking two large potatoes in the oven or microwave, then quartering and peeling them (or leave the skins on if you’d like). Place the potatoes in a deep bowl and add 2 tablespoons of butter and 2/3 cup of 1/2 percent- or 1 percent-fat buttermilk. Use a potato masher or mixer to blend the potatoes. Season to taste. Enjoy St. Patrick’s Day with this tasty, but reduced-fat meal! CORNED BEEF BRISKET WITH CABBAGE

4 carrots 1 medium onion, cut in 4 wedges 1 4-pound corned beef brisket 2 tablespoons steak sauce 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon black pepper 4 to 6 cups low-sodium beef broth 1 tablespoon corned beef spices or pickling spices (or spices that come with the brisket) 1 medium head cabbage, cut into 6 wedges Grainy mustard for serving

1. Place celery, carrots and onion in the bottom of a large slow-cooker or crock pot. Rinse the corned beef brisket. Season brisket and vegetables with the steak sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and salt and pepper. Place the brisket on top of the vegetables. Pour in the beef broth until it barely covers the brisket. Cover and cook on low for eight to nine hours.

You can also use a self-directed IRA to start a business! How cool is that? It must be a C-Corp, and there must be a Board of Directors that can essentially fire you since you need to have distance between you and the corporate funds (which came from your IRA). But those issues are surmountable and easily handled.

RETIREMENT YOUR WAY WITH A SELF-DIRECTED IRA

Tina out, and the rental income goes back into the IRA account. But, the account owner cannot live in the house or receive rental proceeds from the IRA. Otherwise, the IRA tax deferred treatment is null and void.

Back to the rules, watch out for IRS prohibited transactions including buying a home to live in now, payments from IRA proceeds, guaranteeing account assets for loans, or extending loans and credit to a disqualified party (outside the scope of this article).

Ultimately, money that was reserved for retirement and the strict arm’s-length rules must be preserved in all business transactions. Depending on the investment, further caution might be necessary, but the self-directed IRA is an incredibly savvy option. ike the idea of paving your own investment path? If you want to stay away from Wall Street, selfdirected IRAs could be your retirement investment vehicle. Unlike a traditional IRA, the self-directed IRA invests in non-publicly traded alternatives. Investments can range from dairy cows and untapped gold mines to the most common asset investments of tax liens, mortgages, business start-ups, and real estate. Performance hinges upon the account owner’s investment choices, yet remains a tax deferred retirement account.

Cross breeding cows might not be your expertise, but you might be more familiar with real estate or small business franchises. Just stay away from life insurance and collectibles - those are off limits according to IRS rules. A common example of this strategy is investing in a rental. The Palmer Lake Historical Society program on the Black Forest fire has been rescheduled to Tuesday, March 18, 2014, at 7:00 P.M. at the Palmer Lake Town Hall, 28 Valley Crescent, Palmer Lake, CO 80133.

Also, on March 20, 2014, at 7:00 PM at the Palmer Lake Town Hall, the Society presents “Doctor at Timberline – Medicine in the Late 1800s and Early 1900s.” John Stansfield, popular story teller and historian, will portray Dr. Charles Fox Gardner, a leader in the early days of tuberculosis treatment in the Pikes Peak region

Terry Stokka, Chairman of the Black Forest History Committee, will discuss the causes that led up to the severe fire danger and take you through the days of the fire and the ongoing recovery.
