“What I like about fairy tales is that they highlight the emotions within a story. The situations aren’t real, with falling stars and pirates. But what you do relate to is the emotions that the characters feel.” – Charlie Cox, actor

ISSUE 647 • MARCH 24, 2014

W

hen you think of fairy tales, you probably envision a happy little story about a young girl becoming a princess and overcoming some struggle to marry Prince Charming and live happily ever after. It’s such a sweet idea that life can be wrapped into a neat little package like that and everyone comes out feeling great in the end. But we all know that’s not always the case in real life. Real life is hard. We have mortgages to pay, sick kids to take care of and Prince Charming may never come so we might end up eating Cup O’ Noodles for dinner by ourselves. It’s easy to understand why we would all feel drawn to the fairy tales that end so sweetly. But are those stories that are so familiar to us really as perfect as they seem? Artistic license often plays a role in the retelling of such stories and so Snippetz decided to go digging to uncover the origins of some of our favorite fairy tales.

This popular fairy tale was written by the Brothers Grimm and first published in 1812 in Germany. The original version and the one we’re all most familiar with today differ in a few key ways.

Barbara Oakley - 719-488-2119 PO Box 863 Monument, CO 80132

• Snow White’s mother was the original “bad guy” of the story until the Brothers Grimm changed it to the wicked stepmother to make the story less scary for younger children.

• There was no “true love’s kiss” in the original version; instead, the prince happened upon the coffin, fell in love with the girl inside and convinced the dwarves to let him take the girl and the coffin away to be with him forever. The coffin was jostled while being moved, the apple was dislodged from Snow White’s throat and she came to.

• Snow White happened upon the dwarfs’ cottage but didn’t go inside to clean it up; she actually made a huge mess in their relatively clean house and then fell asleep on their beds.

1740 and the original version was written by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve. As with Snow White, there are several differences between the version many are familiar with and the originally-published version.

• Snow White and the prince made plans to marry and even invited her wicked stepmother. The Queen accepted the invitation, shocked that Snow White was alive. As punishment for her attempts to take Snow White’s life, the Queen was forced to put on a pair of white-hot iron shoes and dance until she died.

• Snow White’s stepmother, the wicked Queen, tried to kill Snow White three times once she found her at the dwarfs’ cottage. The first time, the queen tied a bodice too tight around the young girl; the second time, she poisoned a comb and then combed Snow White’s hair with it. Both times, the dwarves returned and revived Snow White. The third time, the queen poisoned an apple that got lodged in Snow White’s throat. The dwarves couldn’t revive her that time and assumed she died.

castle and the Beast threatened to kill the merchant. The merchant convinced the Beast to allow him to leave with all the gifts but promised he would return to the castle. • Belle returned to the castle in her father’s place and the Beast told her she was the mistress of the castle, waiting on her hand and foot and letting her wear beautiful clothes and jewelry. The Beast proposed to her every night but she always refused. • The Beast allowed Belle to visit her family for one week and sent her with a magic mirror and magic ring. When Belle’s sisters saw her new clothes, they became jealous and pretended like they didn’t want her to return in the hopes that if she didn’t go back to the castle in time, the Beast would kill her. • Belle began to feel guilty about not keeping her promise to the Beast and used the magic mirror to see him. He was literally dying from heartbreak. Belle used the ring to return to the Beast where she began to cry because of the state he was in and told him she loved him. Her tears dripped onto him and he transformed back into the prince he once was. • One adaptation of this fairy tale was written in 1937 in China and was called, “Beauty and Pock Face.”

SLEEPING BEAUTY The first version of this fairy tale was written by Charles Perrault in 1697 and has been adapted several times, in several different ways. Initially, there were two narrative parts but the first is the one most people are familiar with but

• Instead of three good fairies coming to bestow gifts upon a newly-born princess, there were actually seven. Their gifts were beauty, wit, grace, dance, song and music. The evil fairy who wasn’t invited cursed the baby to prick her hand on the spindle of a spinning wheel and die so the seventh fairy changed the curse so that the princess wouldn’t die but instead, would sleep for 100 years and would be awoken by a king’s son. • In some versions, the princess was sent away to protect her from harm but in the original version, she stayed at the castle and all the spinning wheels were burned except one. That happens to be the one the princess pricked her finger on and fell into a deep sleep. • The princess was put high up in a tower and the good fairies decided to put the rest of the kingdom to sleep so the princess wouldn’t be alone when she finally awoke. They created a forest of trees and brambles to surround the castle to keep the kingdom from being disturbed. • One hundred years later, a prince happened upon the forest and, having heard the stories about the castle inside, climbed the trees and brambles to get inside. He went to Sleep Beauty’s chamber and the curse was broken by his presence so the princess awoke and the two talked for a long time while the rest of the kingdom awoke. There was no “true love’s kiss” in the original version of this story either.

DESIGNING FOR YOU, NOT ME

H

aving an Interior Designer come into your home can be intimidating. I have heard many stories about a clients’ previous experience with another Designer….they were critical of the décor; they wanted to impose their own vision onto a client; they were not listening to the clients’ needs and ideas, the list goes on and on.

It is always my goal to work with my clients to bring their visions and desires for their home to life and it is the most rewarding thing to hear them say thank you and to see the excitement and satisfaction in their eyes when we have met that goal. That is what fuels my passion for my job!

McCord’s Garden Center and Landscaping IT’S

OFFICIALLY SPRING!

If you have had a less than perfect experience in the past with a design professional and you still find yourself struggling to get your home “just right” please don’t give up hope! Not all Interior Designers approach their job in the same manner and you may just be surprised if you make that call and try again.

Trust me, I have heard just about everything you can imagine! So I do understand that sometimes it can be difficult for someone to make that call and ask a virtual stranger for advice on one of the most important areas of their life, their home. My approach is to listen to each one of my clients and talk with them about their likes, dislikes, their lifestyle, their vision for their home and what do they think their style is (even if they think they don’t have one), then determine the best solution to meet the needs of the household while infusing into the home their own personal style and flair. I truly believe that your home should be a physical manifestation of your personality! Our homes say a lot about us, whether we are aware of it or not, so grab that opportunity to really let your personality and your home shine! That’s why I say I am helping you “Find Your Design Style”.

PATHWAY PARENTING LONELINESS: THE CONSTANT HEARTACHE

THE QUICKEST CURE FOR LONELINESS By Dr. Ron Ross

T

he quickest cure for loneliness is to find a friend. Like everything worthwhile, it is easier said than done. Lonely people need a few guiding principles in their pursuit of friendship. Here are five principles that will help you develop good friends. Principle No. 1: You must diversify your activities. Find a variety of ways to get involved with others: take your lunch break with someone new, join a group involved in playful activity, volunteer to meet some need you identify with, or join a study group. To make friends you have to get out of the rut you are in. Principle No. 2: You must develop social skills. If you have been alone for some time it is likely you have lost many of the social skills necessary for developing friendships. Relearn them by following these few suggestions: Get sincerely interested in other people. Learn the fine art of asking questions. Since people love to talk about themselves, when you strike up a conversation with someone, get them to talk about themselves. They will think you are the most interesting and intelligent person they have ever met. Use your body language to demonstrate an open and welcoming spirit. Make eye contact. Smile. Principle No. 3: You must display authenticity. There is no one on earth just like you, so display your uniqueness with authenticity. The word authentic comes from the Greek word authentes meaning author. When you display your singular uniqueness you honor the one who authored you, the God who created you. At the same time you honor the person you really are. Show the world your

distinctiveness. If you try to be anyone other than yourself, those around you are robbed of what you have to offer.

ARE YOU TRYING TO MAKE ME MAD?

Principle No. 4: You must discern wisely. Take the time and effort necessary to determine the kind of friends you want to make. Someone once said, “Chance makes our parents, but choice makes our friends.” Look for good people to draw into your circle of friends then be a good friend to them. Good people make good friends. The wisest man that ever lived said, “Become wise by walking with the wise, hang out with fools and watch your life fall to pieces.”*

O

ver the years of my adolescence and young adulthood, I would witness parents punishing their small children as if their children were trying to be bad. As a teenager, I didn’t know one way or another if the child was trying to act out. But as I grew older and had my own daughter and now my grandson, I usually take the position that the small child is NOT trying to be bad.

Principle No. 5: You must delay intimacy. Lonely people have a great deal of unexpressed emotional energy. Become intimate too soon and you could make a very big mistake. Because of our over sexualized society many people jump into bed before they know their partner’s full name. This kind of false intimacy causes guilt and pain and does not result in genuine intimacy no matter how hot the sex. The popular phrase today is “hooking up,” and I don’t like it because it suggests a sense of despair and worthlessness. Casual sex is no solution to loneliness. Intimate relationships grow best when they grow slowly.

At a certain age, some kids do try to act out on purpose for a variety of reasons. Many times, it’s to create attention of some sort. For some older kids, negative or painful attention is better than zero attention. There are ways to address this as I learned in my years of teaching angry adolescents. In a three-year-olds’ case, in this situation, Conor, it was not about acting out. It was about a release of physical energy. As we were finishing eating dinner, I walked in the kitchen with my plate and surveyed how many dishes we would need to wash up before I could relax with my feet up for the evening. In that moment my Mom, who was finishing her dinner at the table with Conor, started saying, “Conor, wait! What are you doing?” I scurried in there to see Conor laughing loudly, throwing crumbs on the floor for the dogs, laughing at the dogs’ reaction, and then throwing his plastic plate across the dining room. (If that keeps up, he’ll be eating off of plastic plates until he’s 20-years-old!)

Each principle begins with two words: You must. I am convinced that true friendships, soul-satisfying relationships are not accidental; they are created over time and with great care. They will not come to you without significant effort and risk on your part. Acquaintances and casual friends are normally the result of circumstances, but close and intimate friendships are the result of prudent choices and heartfelt decisions. *Proverbs 13:20

Conor continued throwing the leftover crumbs from the table to the floor while he laughed like a deep voiced hyena. All this happened very fast as I tried to intervene and voice my objections. He didn’t want to

listen and pretended I wasn’t there while he was still laughing. I picked him up and took him to his time-out space and stood behind him. Still laughing, he tried to get out by pushing his head between my ankles and then he tried to go around my legs. Given his size against mine, he didn’t have a chance. I tried to keep him facing the door, because it appeared he thought we were playing a game. I knew I needed him to understand that his behavior was not acceptable. He calmed down, followed my next instructions (cleaning up and apologizing) and was pleasant the rest of the evening. I saw Conor’s behavior simply as an overenergized three-year-old that needed to be guided to understand what he was doing and the consequences of his actions. In Conor’s case, I wasn’t about to leave him in time-out alone even if that would have been seemingly more convenient at the time. Had I walked away, he would have gotten up and immediately ran around the house like a deep voiced hyena on speed. I was willing to sit there with him all evening if I needed to…but with respect and dignity for him. The result? He understood and made immediate changes without feeling disrespected as a child. Long-term result? He’ll continue learning what respect is and how to honor it in all relationships. Will he act like that again? Probably, since he’s only three. Will it take continued discipline on all our parts? Absolutely! Is it worth it? More than I can say in one article. FAMILY ITCHING TO BE RID OF PINWORMS DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Two of my children, a boy in the second grade and a girl in kindergarten, have been scratching their behinds for a week. I mentioned this to my neighbor, and she said they probably have pinworms. That made me sick to my stomach. How do I know for sure? If they have them, where did they come from? I have two other children. Should they, my husband and I also be treated? I am really upset. -- A.D. ANSWER: Calm down. Pinworms are easily treated. They’re harmless and don’t indicate a lack of cleanliness in your home. They’re found worldwide, and no stratum of society is immune to infection with them. Transmission takes place when pinworm eggs find their way into another person’s mouth. Scratching embeds eggs under the fingernails. The majority of infections take place when an adult or child with pinworm eggs under his or her nails or on his or her hands touches another, and that person then transfers them to the mouth. In the digestive tract, an adult pinworm emerges in a month to six weeks. Infected people perpetuate the cycle of infection in their own bodies by transmitting eggs to their mouths. The mature female pinworm travels down the digestive tract at night and deposits her eggs at or just outside the anus. A female lays more than 11,000 eggs. They’re the cause of intense itching. The diagnosis is made by finding the worm

or its eggs. The best time to look is first thing in the morning, before the child has washed. A pinworm looks like a thin, white thread, about four-tenths of an inch (1 cm) long. Make the search with a flashlight and a magnifying glass. Scotch tape, fixed to a tongue depressor or a similar object and pressed against the skin near the anus, traps eggs, which the doctor can see with a microscope. The tape is fixed to the depressor with the sticky side on the outside. The ends of the tape are folded over to adhere to the two sides of the depressor. Mebendazole and albendazole do a good job in getting rid of the worms. All family members should be treated. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My doctor has me on a calcium tablet because I’m nearing the osteoporosis line. I’m 63 and never have taken any kind of medicine. I hate to break my record.

• On March 30, 1775, hoping to keep the New England colonies dependent on the British, King George III endorses the New England Restraining Act. The Act required New England colonies to trade exclusively with Great Britain. An additional rule would come into effect banning colonists from fishing in the North Atlantic. • On March 28, 1814, the funeral of Guillotin, namesake of the infamous execution device, takes place outside of Paris. When first used, the crowds seemed to miss the gallows, but the guillotine quickly caught on. The device symbolized equality, as it was used on both commoners and the nobility alike. • On March 27, 1912, in Washington, D.C., Helen Taft, wife of President William Taft, and the Viscountess Chinda, wife of the Japanese ambassador, plant two Yoshina cherry trees on the northern bank of the Potomac River. The event was held in celebration of a gift by the Japanese government of 3,020 cherry trees to the United States.

• On March 26, 1920, “This Side of Paradiseâ€? is published, immediately launching 23-year-old F. Scott Fitzgerald to fame and fortune. While in Europe, Fitzgerald finished his masterpiece “The Great Gatsbyâ€? (1925). He also published dozens of short stories in his lifetime. • On March 24, 1958, Elvis Presley is inducted into the U.S. Army after being granted a two-month deferment to finish his third movie, “King Creole.â€? While stationed in Germany, Presley met his future wife, 14-year-old Priscilla Beaulieu. • On March 29, 1971, Lt. William L. Calley is found guilty of premeditated murder at My Lai by a U.S. Army court-martial. Calley, an infantry platoon leader, had led his men in a massacre of hundreds of Vietnamese civilians, including women and children, in 1968. • On March 25, 1983, during filming of the television special “Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever,â€? Diana Ross, formerly of the Supremes, shoved singer Mary Wilson out of the spotlight. It had to be edited out later. Smokey Robinson stepped in onstage to keep between the two warring Supremes.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, moderate exercise is effort rated as a 5 or 6 on a scale of 0 to 10. Vigorous exercise is a 7 or 8 on that scale. One minute of vigorous activity equals two minutes of moderate activity. SLEEPYHEAD by Nick Yanez

I

f you ache. If you are hungry. If you feel your head spinning. If you the light is getting to your brain. If a unicorn jumps out from behind the bathroom door and asks for your business card. If you can’t seem to accomplish everyday tasks with the same ease – there’s probably a simple solution. It’s time to go to bed. Rest (and sleep in particular) is an amazing tool to revitalize your body. A recent study shows just how imperative a good sleep schedule is. A team of researchers at the University of Pennsylvania conducted an experiment proving that inconsistent sleep schedules can lead to serious neurological damage. In each short or out-of-cycle sleep, a person can experience a large loss of neurons. What

I’m going to allow you to take me at my word on that statement. If you cannot find it in your heart to do so, please do some internet research on the subject. Because I could spend the next 250 words telling you details of the research and specific scientific evidence to support these claims, but instead of that, I’d like to address a couple of core issues I have that directly relate to sleep.

(719) 377•9121 www.AmadaSeniorCare.com/ColoradoSprings hours of sleep! If a person sleeps from 2am to 1pm every day, their peers would almost certainly talk negatively about their sleeping habits. My point is that we shouldn’t focus on when people are sleeping, only how much. That’s what is important for the body; not what time in the day we’re waking up.

The first issue I have is with society viewing “sleeping in” as a negative and lazy act. It’s a narrative that is unfair to many teenagers and college-aged kids around the globe (and some older folks too, no doubt) - If they’re sleeping until noon, they’re lazy and irresponsible! The amount of sleep one gets, paired with a consistent schedule, are the two most important factors in getting the body a healthy amount of rest. In that case, if a person is regularly going to bed around 2am, it is unfair to expect them to wake up before 10-11am. Plus, it would be unhealthy for them to do so. It’s perfectly socially acceptable to turn in around 9pm every night and be up by 8am. That’s 11

The second major issue I’m taking with how our society treats sleep relates directly to the federal government. Why exactly does Elementary School start later in the day than High School? Everyone and their Mom knows that younger kids have a tendency to rise early and teenagers like to doze late into the morning (at least). Why is it that this has been backwards for so long? Adjust the school times and we’ll likely see an improvement in learning ability. A well-rested mind is a thirsty mind! I feel better now

8

that I said all of that. If you happen to still be reading this article, you may ask yourself why I have jumped topics three or four times in one short column. Part of the reason is that I changed my thought process about what I wanted to portray in this piece halfway through writing it. The other factor is that I am jotting this all down at 1am. Now I plan to sleep late into the morning and perhaps into the early part of the afternoon. The good news is, after my rant above, I have no qualms with sleeping in. I’m only doing my part in preventing dead neurons in my brain.

Feel free to send Nick an email anytime about his weekly column, or any leads you have for underreported stories he could write about, to NickSnipsMail@Gmail.com

CELEBRATE PEANUTS!

M

arch is National Peanut month! It’s time to celebrate America’s most popular nut.

The peanut plant probably originated in South America. European explorers first discovered peanuts in Brazil. Tribes in central Brazil also ground peanuts with maize to make a drink. Peanuts were growing as far north as Mexico when the Spanish began their exploration of the New World. The explorers took peanuts back to Spain, and from there traders and explorers spread them to Asia and Africa. Africans were the first people to introduce peanuts to North America beginning in the 1700s. Peanuts were grown in Virginia in the 1800s as a commercial crop, and used mainly for oil, food and as a cocoa substitute. At this time, peanuts were regarded as a food for livestock and the poor, and were considered difficult to grow and harvest. Peanuts became prominent after the Civil War when Union soldiers found they liked them and took them home. Both armies subsisted on this high-protein food source. Their popularity grew in the late 1800s when PT Barnum’s circus wagons traveled across the country and vendors called out, “Hot roasted peanuts! to the crowds. Peanuts also became popular at baseball games. In the early 1900s, peanuts became a significant agricultural crop when the boll weevil threatened the South’s cotton crop. Following the suggestions of noted scientist Dr. George Washington Carver, peanuts served as an effective commercial crop and, for a time, rivaled the position of cotton in the South. There is evidence that ancient South American Inca Indians were the first to grind peanuts to make peanut butter. In the United States, Dr. John Harvey Kellogg (of cereal fame) invented a version of peanut butter in 1895. Peanut butter was first introduced at the St. Louis World’s Fair in 1904. It is believed that the U.S. Army popularized the peanut butter and jelly sandwich, using them for sustenance during maneuvers in World War II. Americans average more than six pounds of peanut products each year. Peanut butter accounts for about half that total -- with $850 million in retail sales each year. Despite the fact that peanuts are high in fat, they are still an excellent food choice because they provide a variety of important nutrients. Peanuts contain protein, fiber and healthy monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, all of which improve health and lower the risk of chronic disease. A study of more than 15,000 peanut con-

sumers determined that they had higher levels of vitamin A, vitamin E, folate, magnesium, zinc, iron, calcium and dietary fiber than people who did not eat peanuts. These nutrients are needed by the body to function properly.

Tuesday - Friday 5 - 9 pm • Saturday 11:30 am - 9 pm 4 Hwy. 105 • Palmer Lake 719-481-3244 • website: http://www.bellapanini.com

Peanuts play a role in lowering blood pressure and cholesterol, and improving longevity and performance. Peanuts help prevent chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer. Studies have shown they can decrease lipid levels and may reduce inflammation, a cause of chronic disease. Researchers also have found that mortality decreases as the frequency of eating nuts like peanuts increases.

Serving Anne & Mann’s Gourmet Ice Cream PROUDLY SERVING ANNE & MANN’S PREMIUM ICE CREAM

In addition to all of these wonderful benefits, peanuts are affordable and easy to find, making them a great addition to a nutritious diet. This recipe for Spicy Peanut-Crusted Chicken adds a healthy crunch to boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs.

PENALTY RELIEF FOR FIRST TIME DELINQUENTS

So what exactly is clean compliance? That means the taxpayer filed on time, paid on time, and remained penalty free for the past 3 years.

Tina allows penalty relief when there is reasonable cause, statutory exceptions, corrections of an IRS error, hazards of litigation (if the IRS is least likely to win the court case), and administrative waivers. A clean compliance history falls within the

Further, filing an extension on time and arranging installment agreements for taxes due are considered filed and paid on time. Just like having a clean driving record and asking for a warning. To obtain a first-time waiver, taxpayers, or their representatives, can make the request by phone or in writing. Reportedly, phone

requests are limited to penalties under $1,000 and those who provide reasonable cause with written requests, have more success. Ultimately, be fully prepared to make a case for reasonable cause as well as proof of clean compliance if the software can’t do it for you.

t’s probably not surprising to hear that in 2012, the IRS assessed 37.9 million penalties against taxpayers that totaled a whopping $26.8 billion. Many of those taxpayers are typically within compliance, year after year. As a reward, the IRS offers a one time, first time abatement penalty waiver, to those taxpayers with a history of clean compliance with the IRS.

Unfortunately, these waivers are infrequently requested because most taxpayers and many tax professionals are unaware they exist.

Penalty waivers aren’t available for every type of delinquency. However, they are available to individuals with failure to file or failure to pay penalties, and businesses with a failure to deposit penalty (payroll taxes). These account for 74% of the penalties assessed in 2012. That’s about 28 million taxpayers who are possibly eligible for first-time waivers. Of course there has to be a good reason for obtaining the abatement and the IRS

...BRING CHRIST INTO OUR FINANCIAL LIVES

DON’T QUIT

R

oughly 10,000 people a day are reaching retirement age. Unfortunately far too many are financially unprepared to retire. There are a multitude of reasons, the stock market crash in 2008 wreaked havoc for many retirement plans, many suffered unemployment and under employment, and for many too much debt compounded the problem. Fear also has kept many from taking any action. So, for those who will be facing retirement soon and are still unprepared, what can be done? First don’t quit. Second get after it. Here are some steps to take now. Pay Yourself First (A lot)

Who are you working for – your lender, your grocer, the taxman or are you working for yourself? Most would say they work for themselves, but if you look at how they manage their money, their choices do not support that premise. When the paycheck comes around everyone else gets paid and if anything is left there just might be a bit to save. That is not the way to pay for a retirement. Remember the secret of Algamish, “A part of all I earn is mine to keep.”

MAKE IT AUTOMATIC Keeping a part of all you earn can become much easier if you make it automatic. Many employers provide saving and investment plans that can be funded through payroll deductions. By taking advantage of those opportunities you make saving the first priority, removing those dollars from your pay check and reducing the temptation to spend first and save later. Many employer plans, such as the 401(k) and the SIMPLE IRA come with the added benefit of employer match funds with can leverage the amount of money you are saving with additional deposits paid for by your employer. If you do not have the benefit of an employer sponsored plan, you still can make your saving automatic. With many financial institutions, including banks, mutual funds and most brokerages, you can establish an automatic saving program. Once establish these programs deduct a fixed dollar amount from your checking account, on the date you determine, and invest that money on your behalf. When you make your retirement savings a bill that is paid automatically, you are more likely to continue making that payment than when you try to save whatever is left.

SPEND LESS One of the benefits of paying yourself first is that you have less money to spend. With less to spend you put yourself in the position of having to make better choices on how you use your money. One way I have found that helps with spending choices is to look at every purchase as a need or want. You need a place to live, you need food on the table, you need water and lights but do you really need that mocha latte with extra cream? By eliminating most of the wants and reevaluating the needs (i.e. new vs. used car) almost everyone can reduce their lifestyle costs without greatly affecting their quality of life and have more to save and invest. When you reduce your living cost you also reduce your retirement costs – the amount of income your investments will need to replace. No matter how you put it. The retirement you are going to have is the one you have prepared for. Saving more and spending less is the key, there really isn’t any short cut. As time is slowly running out, now is the time to make the changes necessary before the changes are forced
