Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet. For many of us, we learned this acronym as a way to keep straight all the colors of a rainbow, starting from the outside and working in. Speaking of rainbows, these beautiful phenomena have come to signify more than just a pretty arc in the sky on a rainy day. In fact, they featured prominently in mythology and superstition. Maybe it’s because they aren’t as easy to come by in nature as you may assume. There’s a formula to the creation of a rainbow. All the variables have to align just right. So when they do, people assume there must be something more powerful in the works. And naturally, Snippetz became curious and decided we needed to know: what is it about the rainbow that has captured people’s attention for so long? sprinkled in the rocks below by the plants being sold last year. Pansies and violas will often come back the following year from seed and will even bloom in the winter if not buried in snow. Some varieties can go as high as 11,000 feet in elevation. In cooler climates where the summer heat isn’t as intense they will continue to bloom all summer long but, pansies generally don’t like extended periods of high heat and will perk up again in the fall. Many new varieties have increased heat tolerance compared to their older relatives.
TOUGH AS A PANSY!
E
ver wonder why a person who is thought to be weak is often called a pansy? I sure have. In fact it really struck me when I noticed there were pansies blooming in the rocks outside the garden center in February. They were blooming away while every other plant around was fast asleep. All of these tough looking trees and shrubs are sleeping through the cold and snow while these sweet, delicate looking pansies are braving it all to show their bright little faces. In fact I would love to be considered a pansy! Both sweet and innocent looking, but will stand up to even the harshest of environments. That’s quite the complement I think, and also why I love to grow pansies. The pansies blooming in the rocks, by the way, weren’t even planted there. They started as just a few wind delivered seeds

LONELINESS: THE CONSTANT HEARTACHE THREE REASONS WHY YOU ARE SHY AND THE ONE THING YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT By Dr. Ron Ross
“I’m shy. That’s just the way I am,” said a young lady I spoke to recently. To her, shyness is in the same category as the color of her eyes or the size of her feet – something she cannot change. But she can change, and so can you. You do not have to be stranded alone in the corner of a room while everyone else has a good time. Here are three reasons why you are shy and one thing you can do about it. Reason 1. You have become comfortable with your shyness. You protect yourself in a cocoon of self-doubt, unworthiness and insecurity, and it feels safe. It is like an old pair of shoes; worn, ugly and disintegrating, but you are used to them. If you bought a new pair you would have to break them in and they might pinch or hurt. And what if you didn’t like the way they looked or maybe they wouldn’t go with your favorite outfit? It is too easy to stay with the old ones – no risk, no unpleasant pain, no change. Your shyness is comfortable and your misery is manageable. Reason 2. You have convinced yourself you must be perfect before you can be personable. You think that there are certain characteristics you must have that will make yourself feel secure enough to take the risk to speak up and be noticed. Since perfection never comes, friendship doesn’t either. Unfortunately, perfection in human relationships is not possible because humans are not perfect. Michael J. Fox said, “Perfection is God’s business.” Reason 3. You are concerned about rejection. You fear being rebuffed because you are unsure of your social skills and
lack confidence in your intellect. Social skills, like all other skills, improve with practice and weaken when unused. Shyness inhibits the exercise of even the most elementary social skills such as a gentle smile, a warm “hello”, or a soft touch.
THE FAILURE SYDROME
Now, the one thing you can do about your shyness. You can re-direct your compassion. Compassion is shared distress combined with the desire to help relieve the distress. It is feeling the other person’s pain, understanding the other person’s experience. Notice the three reasons for shyness are all about how you feel, what you experience, and the way you think.

xamples of success and failure surround us all the time. Within the media, the family unit, the professional work place, and in the mainstream public, we can see the many examples of both success and failure. These examples can lead to false thoughts/beliefs about a person’s own worth regarding success and failure.
Stop thinking only about you and become concerned about the feelings of other people. You will be amazed how quickly you will be welcome in any company once they find out you are interested in their happiness more than your own. Re-direct your compassion and you will become a friendship magnet. Magic will happen when you forget yourself and put first the wants and needs of the other person.
What if there was a world where success and failure did not exist? What if, instead, we lived in a world where life is simply about exploring, living, loving, and learning? What if there was no such thing as judgment and fear? Many would view the answers as an impossible reality. Maybe it is and maybe it is not. One way to remove judgment and fear is for all to be invested in their own healing process. A step in that direction is to examine the false beliefs around success and failure.
Walk into any room and know this: everyone has a problem, everyone struggles with something. It may not be some earth-shattering crisis, but everyone has a hidden indulgence or a point of pain. If they sense you care about them, they will like you. If they think you are there only for your own benefit, then your journey to friendship will be long and frustrating. Know and understand everyone lives with some degree of pain and sorrow and be the person ready to listen, eager to help.
Much of the time the beliefs around success and failure are based on what someone else decided was an example of success and failure. For example, in one family a successful child may be one who earns excellent grades, is popular, does well in sports or other school activities, listens to directions, and goes on to earn many dollars in a well respected career field.
Become famous for caring and you will never want for friends. Or as the songwriter put it, “Make someone happy, make just one someone happy, and you will be happy too!”
In another family, a successful child may be one who gives away his or her birthday and holiday gifts to the needy, spends days off from school at the soup kitchen, and knows the value of recycling. These are two broad examples, and different families will have different definitions of success. But what if a child does not follow those examples set forth? What if the child decides to create

What if the child grows into an adult who has formed the false beliefs that anything he or she does will be a failure, so “why bother trying”? The individual who carries a thought pattern similar to this may find him or herself attempting different careers, academic programs, relationships, and/or living locations all the time. The person may find difficulty in identifying what he or she really wants in life and simply exists without purpose. For this issue, Emotions of Failure Tai Yi treatment is appropriate. ANSWER: You have an affliction that would drive me crazy -- tinnitus, a constant noise in one or both ears or the head that people describe in a variety of ways as ringing, whistling, buzzing, hissing or roaring. An estimate of the number of Americans suffering from tinnitus (TIN-uh-tiss or tuhNITE-iss) is somewhere between 16 million and 60 million. Tinnitus mostly happens to older people whose hearing is diminishing. Why tinnitus arises in them is explained by the fact that head noises are generated constantly. Outside noise entering the ears obliterates these internal noises. When deafness approaches, the volume of external noises greatly lessens, and the internal noises then become prominent and nerve-racking. If your hearing is growing dimmer, a hearing aid will help you hear more clearly and will dampen your tinnitus. Other causes of tinnitus are as banal as a wax impaction in the eardrum, something easily taken care of by the family doctor. Drugs like aspirin and the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicines (Aleve, Advil, Motrin) can bring on tinnitus if they are constantly used. If a cause cannot be determined, then other approaches have to be taken. A bedside radio tuned to a station that plays the kind of music you like can reduce the volume of tinnitus. Nighttime is the worst time for it.

ANSWER: Concentrations of 1.5 percent hydrogen peroxide are used by some as a mouthwash and at 1.5 percent to 3 percent as a wound cleaner. The same doses are used to remove wax from the ear canal. I can’t find any confirmation of the benefit of using food-grade hydrogen peroxide for prostate or urinary tract problems. I would not encourage you to use it. Food grade is a very high concentration.

he day might come when you show up at your doctor’s office for an appointment, hand over your ID card -- and you’re handed back an iPad tablet or similar electronic device. You’ll be asked to answer questions on the screen. Researchers at King’s College London teaching hospital in the U.K. used these devices in their study into whether patients with physical illnesses also had depression. They determined that as many as 30 percent of those with long-term conditions had some type of mentalhealth concerns as well. The electronic gadgets were a frontline means of screening. The results were instantaneous, and it meant better recognition of patient concerns, as well as actions being taken to address those concerns once the

’m going to be honest with you all. I break the law on a very regular basis. Probably every day. It’s called speeding and it is perhaps the most common crime in society today. Everyone speeds, for the most part. I’m so accustomed to speeding, I don’t even realize what’s happening when I do it. The second I see a speed limit sign I immediately assume that I can go 5mph over that limit, without any consequences. For the most part, that’s true. I’ve never been pulled over for going ‘5-over’, even if it’s right past a police officer. I had a friend once get a ticket for going 3mph too fast in High School. We were all shocked, and rightfully so, as nothing like that has hap-

Which is why I’m a fan of the new laws passed in Idaho and Wyoming! For those who haven’t heard, the two Midwestern states have recently joined the speed club (which originally included just Texas and Utah) in switching their Highway speed limits to 80mph. In Idaho, there was a slight controversy in the change.

As long as Idaho and Wyoming take the right approach by only allowing 3 or 4-lane highways to be 80mph, it shouldn’t cause any issues.
After passing in the senate with ease, but squeaking through congress, the Governor signed the new law allowing the Idaho Transportation Department the authority to change highway speed limits to 80mph where it sees fit. A huge help in the matter was looking to neighbor Utah. Since the change in the Beehive State, accident rates have not increased. It’s also worth noting that the average speed of drivers hasn’t budged, meaning (like me) drivers were already going 80mph.
Now I’m sure there are plenty of readers who totally disagree with my view point. Many elderly people I’ve spoken with seem to think that the world is in too much of a hurry. Why can’t we slow down to 65mph? What’s the rush? The fact is, life moves fast in the 21st century. Even if you don’t like it, that’s the truth. Some people need to go 80mph, all the time, just to get where they need to be. Plus, if there is an extra lane or two,

there’s no reason folks who want to take the steady pace of 65mph can’t. Which is why I’m an advocate of Colorado being the next state to introduce the 80mph speed limit on multi-lane highways. We’re already the state that boldly legalized the sale of recreational marijuana. Why not let us speed around like idiots for a while too? Maybe then I can settle into a speed limit, without the temptation to push it to ‘5-over’. Until then, I’ll be a common criminal – the worst kind of criminal - one who never gets caught.

EAT YOUR WAY TO GOOD HEALTH “You are what you eat!â€? The phrase was coined in 1923 as part of an advertising campaign, but the idea that you need to eat good food to be fit and healthy has been around much longer. Even simple diet choices can boost our immune system, said Susan Mills-Gray, Nutrition and Health Education specialist with University of Missouri Extension. Here are some simple things that can boost your immune system to work at peak performance. • Get plenty of liquids to help prevent viruses and bacteria from taking up residence in your body. According to Dr. Riva Rahl of the Cooper Clinic in Dallas, “The mucus in your nose is actually one of the key physical barriers that keep germs out of your body. When you’re not well hydrated, it dries up and doesn’t provide that barrier.â€? • Protein is a building block for a healthy immune system. Choose lean red meats, poultry and fish, dried beans and soy. You also can choose protein-rich plant sources with heart-healthy fat, like peanut butter and nuts. • Foods with antioxidant-rich vitamins C and E protect cells -- including those of your immune system -- from damage by toxins in the environment. Choose citrus fruits/juices, melons, mangoes, kiwi, peppers, tomatoes, berries, broccoli, cabbage, sweet/white potatoes, winter squash, leafy greens, almonds, hazelnuts, peanut butter, sunflower seeds, safflower oil, whole grains and fortified cereals several times a day. • Eat probiotic foods to help build up the good bacteria in the intestines. These bacteria play a role in helping fend off illnesses. Any fermented food is rich in this type of good bacteria, so choose yogurt, sauerkraut, tofu, brine-treated pickles and aged cheese at least daily. • Add a zinc-rich food to your daily diet to increase the production of white blood cells in your body. Research shows that this effect can reduce the number of days you’ll suffer from a cold. Some foods rich in zinc are yogurt, lean red meat, poultry and fish, almonds, pumpkin seeds and fortified cereals.

1. Preheat oven to 275 F. Line a rimmed baking sheet with aluminum foil or parchment paper. Brush with 1/2 tablespoon oil. Place salmon fillets, skin side down, on prepared baking sheet. 2. Mix remaining oil, thyme, garlic, lemon zest, sage, salt and pepper in a small bowl. Spread thyme mixture over salmon fillets, dividing equally. Let stand 10 minutes to allow flavors to meld. 3.
