“It usually takes more than three weeks to prepare a good impromptu speech.” – Mark Twain

ISSUE 649 • APRIL 7, 2014

Y

ou probably don’t realize it but our everyday speech is peppered with things that, when you really stop to look at it, don’t quite make sense. Take the oxymoron for example. These interesting little figures of speech make perfect sense in context because we’re all so used to them. But broken down, they seem to contradict themselves. And that’s what makes them fun. People like Samuel Goldwyn, an influential movie producer who worked from the 1920s to the 1950s managed to create a humorous facet of his persona that was based in the use of the oxymoron. What better way to make people laugh than to say something that sounds great but doesn’t really make any sense? Snippetz became curious and decided we had to look into the oxymoron and see if we could find some funny ones to share with you, our faithful readers. So, read on!

than others because we’ve become too accustomed to using them in everyday speech. Others are more obvious to pick out. We’ve compiled a list and a brief explanation of some oxymora for you to peruse. Enjoy!

Oxymoron... Continued from Page 1

WHAT IS AN OXYMORON?

First off, the plural of oxymoron is not oxymorons; it’s oxymora. So what are oxymora? There are really two ways to use or create an oxymoron. The first is as we mentioned on the front page: when a figure of speech, based on either the words used or the context in which they are placed, produce a self-contradictory effect. Think about “jumbo shrimp.” The words make sense and you probably know that someone means a large category of the crustacean called shrimp when they say that particular phrase. But how can something be considered jumbo, which means big or large, and shrimp, which means small or tiny at the same time? The second type is called a rhetorical oxymoron and is a more conscious decision on the part of the speaker to put together a phrase composed of words that are not inherently contradictory but help express the opinion that implies the words cannot occur together.

Exact estimate – an estimate is an educated guess. So the fact that the estimate is exact is the exact opposite of a guess, right? We like to think so . . .

Elevated subway – the prefix “sub” means under, which is why subways are called what they are since they run below the ground. So if you elevate it above the ground, it’s no longer a subway. In fact, a subway that runs above the ground is pretty much a train, right? Why not just call it an elevated train, then?

For example, some people would consider “bipartisan cooperation” an oxymoron, indicating that the two main political parties cannot possibly cooperate. The intent is usually not malicious; it’s usually meant to be a joke.

EXAMPLES OF OXYMORA Some oxymora are a little harder to spot

Act naturally – how can somebody possibly act naturally if, when they are being natural, they aren’t acting?

Boneless ribs – ribs are bones. So how do you get ribs without the bones? When you see this product, the meat around the rib bones without the bones present, the phrase makes sense but when you really look at it, you can see how it’s a perfect oxymoron! Authentic replica or genuine imitation – we can see how this one makes sense as a phrase but again, it’s a great example of an oxymoron. How can something be both authentic and a replica at the same time? How can something, like leather for example, be genuine and imitation at the same time? We wouldn’t be at all surprised

if this little gem was invented by advertising agencies to make replicas more enticing to consumers by throwing in a word like “authentic” or “genuine” to trick our minds. Sneaky, sneaky. •

Random order or random pattern – random is defined as lacking any definite plan or prearranged order. That said, pairing “random” with something like “order” or “pattern” is certainly an oxymoron because the first word contradicts the second. Of course, we all know that random order means the order was not prearranged and that random pattern means the pattern was not predetermined, either. Still, the phrase makes you wonder . . .

Relative stranger – how can someone be both a relative and a stranger? Well, if you live in a big Irish-Catholic family and have 30 first cousins, several of which you’ve only met once or twice, then it makes sense. But it’s still an oxymoron.

• •

Rolling stop – if you’re rolling, you have not stopped and if you’ve stopped, you’re not rolling. For many people, learning to drive from their parents included the occasional reference to a “rolling stop,” usually in conjunction with the disclaimer that just because mom and dad do rolling stops doesn’t mean you can, too. Deafening silence – how can si-

lence be deafening if silence, by definition is the lack of sound? Many of us can relate to that feeling that the silence is deafening but the literal meaning is very contradictory, making this a great oxymoron. •

Serious fun – isn’t it interesting how when someone wants to express that they are having a large amount of fun, they call it “serious fun?” It almost seems more appropriate to call it delirious fun, something that denotes a happy time rather than something akin to work. Although, let’s be honest, some work can be fun. Right, George? Slumber party – sleeping is definitely a great pastime but it’s hard to categorize it as a party. Of course, we all know that there isn’t much sleeping happening at a slumber party, especially if it includes giggly little girls. That said, this still qualifies as an oxymoron. Numbing sensation – if being numb means a lack of sensation, then what does the sensation of numbing feel like? Maybe we could make a new phrase for this feeling that feels like a lack of feeling . . .

Natural makeup – isn’t it interesting to consider the idea that women consciously put on make that makes it look like they have no makeup on? This oxymoron is one in both name and action, making it that much more powerful, if you ask us.

719.963.7438

T.A.C. TILE

Literal interpretation – if something is literally happening, there’s no need for interpretation. However, we’ve all been around that person who doesn’t understand certain turns of phrase and who actually does interpret everything you say literally. Mostly, those people are under the age of six, but not always.

Fresh dried fruit – it’s a little confusing to consider that a fruit that is dried and processed could be considered fresh. Perhaps there’s something about certain dried fruits that allows a company to categorize them as fresh but the irony of the title is not lost on us.

Head butt – no, not butthead. Head butt, as in the act of hitting someone with your head. This one is interesting because put together, the two words make up an action but taken apart, represent two parts of the body that are basically polar opposites from one another. They’re not necessarily contradictory but taking the terms literally (like a literal interpretation, if you will) results in a funny picture, don’t you think?

LIGHT IT UP

G

etting that perfect look in any room involves layers…Layers of color, texture, furniture/accessories and, yes, lighting. Let’s take a look at the lighting piece of the puzzle today. Probably the room we are all most familiar with in terms of creating mood lighting is the dining room…I mean we’ve all turned down the lights and enjoyed a romantic candlelit dinner, right? Well, we need to apply the same idea to the rest of the home, not necessarily to create romance, but to create ambience. The first step in getting your lighting tamed is to put dimmer switches on all overhead/ceiling lights, as often these can put out too much light in one spot. (I even have dimmers on my master bathroom lights). Now add in a lamp or two, a floor lamp and a table lamp or two table lamps, whatever best suits your needs. When lamp shop-

ping always look for something that has a great shape, a pop of color, or a really cool lampshade, because lamps are one of those functional items that serve double duty and also add a lot to your decor. So take the time to find one that you really like and not just one that will “work”. Keep in mind that diferent lampshade materials and colors, along with your choice of light bulb will afect how much light you get from the lamp.

For areas where you need direct lighting look at installing recessed lights these are great in the kitchen and as accent lighting in the living room or anywhere else you may want it. Once you have these diferent combinations of lighting options and the proper bulbs and wattages, you can light the room for any occasion. When it’s just the two of you maybe the recessed light over the fireplace and a lamp or two create the perfect soft lighting you want. When you are entertaining and you can turn on the overheads, dim them just a bit, and then turn on your cool lamps and your recessed lights and know that your guests can clearly see the hors d’ouvres, without being blinded with too much light.

LONELINESS: THE CONSTANT HEARTACHE

FIVE LEVELS OF FRIENDSHIPS By Dr. Ron Ross

S

marmy quotes about friendship posted on Facebook walls do nothing to clarify the meaning of this serious human yearning. Friendship is experienced on at least five levels. Passing friendship is the first level. The interesting person you sit next to on a long flight or the stranger who assists you in a moment of need would be passing friendships. After my freshman year in college I took a train from Julesburg, Colorado to Columbus, Nebraska. Sitting close to me was a lovely young lady my age and we chatted like old friends every mile of the way. Before I departed the train we exchanged addresses and promised to stay in touch forever, but we did not. It was a passing friendship. This category would also include nearly all school-days friends. Needy friendship is the second level. These are the friends who appear only when they need something. They are found on the job when they need a favor, next door when they want to borrow a lawn tool, at church when they need another volunteer, etc. They are people you know and whose company you can abide though you will not vacation with them nor invite them to your birthday party. Highly regarded friendship is the third level. This would be someone of importance with whom you are on a firstname basis and whom you hold in very high regard. It could be your pastor, employer, a notable neighbor, a classmate of significant achievement, etc. You don’t dine at each other’s table nor do you call on the phone to chat, but you do know and respect each

PATHWAY PARENTING

other. Reciprocal friendship is the fourth level. These would be friends with whom you share a common interest such as fishing buddies or scrapbooking pals. For several years I have been playing basketball twice a week with a bunch of senior men. Most of us know each other only by our first names. When someone drops out of basketball the friendship is no longer be reciprocal so it ceases to be a friendship at all. Once one of the players suggested we have a barbeque and bring our wives for some fellowship. No one was interested. The only thing that brings us together is our common desire to play basketball.

TEENAGERS!

E

very adult has experienced adolescence, but not all adults know how to connect with teenagers. If you have teenagers at home, you may be pulling your hair out right now. It’s well known that teenagers go through hormonal changes, sometimes beginning as young as age eleven. These hormonal changes can many times add intensity to the teen’s behaviors. Understanding this is important, because what teens eat and drink will contribute to those hormonal changes in a negative or positive manner.

You probably have friends on each of those first four levels, but few have friends on the fifth level. The fifth level is true friendship. Here are four marks of a true friend: 1. A true friend is interested in both your happiness and your well-being; an encourager but also a truth-telling counselor. 2. A true friend respects your principles. He/she will never ask you to compromise your principles in the name of your friendship. 3. A true friend inspires you to be and do your best. 4. A true friend is with you in good times and bad.

When children and teens eat a lot of processed foods, refined sugar, and fast food, it will impact their brain in such a way that it can be difficult for them to fully process their emotions and thoughts. Many times, the emotions and thoughts get processed halfway and they react on those in an uncomfortable and disrespectful manner. Establishing a healthy diet begins at home and very early. Genetically modified foods have also been linked to behaviors that might be labeled ADD or ADHD.

Why do most people have so few true friends? Is it because closeness takes risk? Is it because friendship requires giving? It could be either of those or any one of a dozen other reasons. Let me give you the reason I think so many people have only a few true friends: because true friendship takes time and emotional energy and we are all in hurry and we are too often emotionally spent. And thus prolongs the constant heartache: loneliness.

Aside from diet that can take hours to research, many teenagers do not feel understood and many carry anger for a variety of reasons. In my experience, teens have carried anger as the result of being labeled, judged, abused, and misunderstood most of the time. It becomes a survival mechanism to be angry and push people away. When a teen pushes away his or her parent/s, anger within the parents can be the result. That parent may push back and arguments ensue. Then the argument ends (many times with slammed doors), silence for a while, and lack of communication occurs that leads up to the next argument. It’s a vicious cycle.

Additional columns on this subject are available on: www.RonRossToday.com Do you have a tale of loneliness or other comments on this column? Share them with Dr. Ross by sending him an email: Dr.Ross@RonRossToday.com. ©2014 Dr. Ronald D. Ross All Rights Reserved

Optimally, parents want to deeply bond with their children at or prior to birth.

When bonding occurs, few problems are seen during the adolescent stage (unless some other trauma occurs outside the home). However, when one or both parents do not deeply bond (this goes above and beyond love) with their young child, the consequences can be most obvious in adolescence. If you’re expecting a child or have young children, NOW is the time to bond. If a teenager is already angry, defiant, and uncooperative, parents can begin with offering understanding and creating a safe place to communicate frustrations without judgment. Begin establishing a line of continued communication and remove any and all judgment. Do create boundaries, expectations, and discernment, but once judgment comes into the picture, the teen will most likely shut down. This is not about coddling; it’s about creating a mutually respectful relationship and a safe home. Next, set the example you want your teen to follow. If you want your teen to follow through with agreements, then make sure that you are already doing that. If you want your teen to be honest, you need to as well. Never ask your teen to do what you’re not willing to do yourself. Set the example with self-integrity. Examples are much louder than words. There can be many suggestions to offer in how to create a harmonious relationship with your teen. One final suggestion here is to create play in the family. Take time to play; spend time or offer to spend time with your teen doing what he or she wants to do. Keep your mind focused on them during that time and be invested in establishing that strong relationship. Adolescence eventually ends. Hopefully the relationship with your child is a life-long one. The pain of appendicitis most often starts in the area of the navel (bellybutton) and works its way toward the lower-right corner of the abdomen. Temperature rises. Vomiting is common, and sometimes diarrhea is part of the picture. A doctor, by what he or she hears from the patient, along with the examination of the abdomen, usually can make the diagnosis. In confusing circumstances, an ultrasound is most helpful.

LIFE IS GOOD WITHOUT AN APPENDIX DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My 13-yearold son went to band camp for five days. On day three, he had terrific stomach pain and started to vomit. The instructors were alarmed and took him to the local hospital, where doctors diagnosed appendicitis. We had to give phone permission for him to have an operation. Everything went fine, and he recovered quickly. My wife and I have a few questions. Could he have eaten something that caused appendicitis? What does not having an appendix do to people? No one in my wife’s or my family has had such an operation. We’re ignorant about all this. -- G.G. ANSWER: The appendix dangles from the first part of the colon in the lower-right side of the abdomen. It looks like a slender worm, and has an average length of 3 inches (8 cm). The function of the appendix isn’t clearly defined, but it might have a role in body immunity. Life without an appendix goes on as normally as life with one. The appendix has a hollow core, which is lined with lymphoid tissue, the same kind of tissue found in lymph nodes. Bacteria from the colon can invade the hollow core and cause the lymph tissue to swell. Swelling cuts off blood supply, and the appendix begins to disintegrate -- appendicitis. Undigested food or hard fecal material also can block the appendix’s core and lead to the same situation. Nothing your son ate is likely the cause. All the other campers ate the same food as he, but he was the only one to develop this problem.

TRI-LAKES PREMIER ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE CENTER

ANSWER: In around 40 percent of men who get the mumps after puberty, the virus also travels to the testicles. That results in impaired fertility in only 13 percent. Sterility almost never happens. If both testicles are infected, then sterility might be a problem.

It seated 3,000 people and boasted a second-floor balcony. • On April 9, 1939, Easter Sunday, more than 75,000 people come to the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., to hear black contralto Marian Anderson give a free concert. Anderson had been scheduled to sing at Washington’s Constitution Hall, but the Daughters of the American Revo-

lution denied her the right to perform because of her race. • On April 11, 1951, President Harry Truman relieves Gen. Douglas MacArthur of command of the U.S. forces in Korea. The firing set off an uproar among the American public, but Truman remained committed to keeping the conflict in Korea limited. Eventually the American people understood that MacArthur’s policies might have led to a massively expanded war in Asia. • On April 10, 1963, the USS Thresher, an atomic submarine, sinks in the Atlantic Ocean, killing the entire crew when it unexpectedly plunged to the sea floor 300 miles off the coast of New England. A subsequent investigation revealed that a leak in a silver-brazed joint in the engine room had caused a short circuit. • On April 13, 1970, disaster strikes 200,000 miles from Earth when oxygen tank No. 2 blows up on Apollo 13, the third manned lunar landing mission. The crippled spacecraft continued to the moon, circled it, and began a long journey back to Earth, parachuting safely into the Pacific Ocean on April 17.

here’s a reason I don’t write poetry for a living. Sure, the rhymes are catchy and the subject is clear, but there’s something kind of childish about the whole thing. Despite that fact, I had to find a way to accurately portray my feelings about the most magical fruit on planet Earth!

Long-Term Care Insurance is a valuable tool to protect your family’s assets. If your loved one has purchased a policy, the next step is to understand and strategize how to best utilize the policy.

I know what you’re thinking (or at least I have an idea). The favorite fruit of each reader jumped to the forefront of their mind. Some will say strawberries, others will think of Mangos. Some people will go with simple and common goods like Apples, Oranges, or Bananas. But none of those would be the magical, delicious, and often ties controversial fruit I’m about to rant about. The great fruit is Grapefruit; and it’s the savior of Mankind’s everyday meal.

most part)! So how did I discover this diet craze well after it had been distinguished? I ate some Grapefruit for lunch. To my surprise I wasn’t hungry for the rest of the day. Most of you don’t know me personally, but the fact is that it’s rare when I skip dinner. The next day I indulged again in a lunchtime bowl of fruit and reached similar results. Then, like any self-respectable mid-20’s male, I decided to Google it. What I found was overwhelming evidence that Grapefruit is the most magical fruit on Earth (as clearly stated in the poem).

The Grapefruit diet has apparently been a “thing” for over a decade. Sciencefolk and nutritionists have documented its impeccable health benefits. It’s good for your heart. It helps speed up your metabolism. It’s a hunger suppressant. I could go on, but it’s easier to note that Grapefruit pretty much has zero negative qualities. The only thing up for debate really is the taste. I say, make like a child and put some sugar on it (the nutritionists actually say that’s okay too, for the

diet, I must religiously defend my diet no matter the consequences. You must abide by the Grapefruit diet because nothing else could possibly be right! Is there a dominant Grapefruit selling company that can hire me as their spokesperson? I could be like Subway’s Jared; only, I’ll be called Nick. If nothing else, give Grapefruit a try. In a two-year study, one organization found that eating a half of a Grapefruit a day without changing any dietary or exercise habits would lose the average person 5lbs every 12 weeks. That’s 20lbs a year! I think I’ve made my case. I

FAST FREEZER FOOD

consider my freezer my cold pantry. I keep it stocked with individual, quick frozen (IQF) fish, shrimp, beef and pork that I wash and season immediately after coming home from the grocery store. (This marinates the meat and saves time). I also stock frozen vegetables -- both prepackaged and blanched veggies from spring and summer months -- “planned ahead casserole meals for busy days, leftovers in old-school “TV dinner plastic containers (perfect for the microwave), extra loaves of bread and sale items that are too much for the two of us to eat, but too good to pass up. I also prepare and freeze appetizers for unexpected company, strawberries macerated in sugar, balsamic vinegar, vanilla and cinnamon to spoon over warm pound cake, and cookie and cake crumbs to sprinkle on ice cream for quick desserts. Frozen food is a delicious way to capture the best flavors of each season. Although many people developed innovative food-freezing techniques, it was Clarence Birdseye who in 1924 invented the quick freezing method known as IQF that produces the frozen foods that we know today. While working as a fur trader in Labrador, Canada, Birdseye discovered that the fish that he and the local Inuit caught froze almost immediately after being pulled from the water. He was delighted to discover that the fish was just as delicious when thawed out months later. From this experience, he theorized that food must be frozen very quickly in order to retain its taste and texture. Birdseye was right. Before quick-freezing came along, foods were frozen at a fairly slow rate. This caused large ice crystals to form, which ruptured the cell membranes of the food. When the food was defrosted, the ice crystals melted and water would leak out, taking with it the food’s flavor and texture. Birdseye developed two methods for quick freezing foods, both of which employed the innovation of packaging the food beforehand. In the more popular technique, the packaged food was held under pressure between two hollow metal plates that were chilled to -25 F by the evaporation of ammonia. Using this method, a 2-inch-thick

package of meat could be frozen to 0 F in about 90 minutes, while fruits and vegetables took about 30 minutes. Birdseye’s quick-freezing process ended up creating 168 patents! These covered not only the freezing technique, but also the packaging, type of paper used and related innovations. Frozen foods are a delicious way to prepare a variety of dishes using fruits and vegetables that have been frozen at their peak of freshness. This recipe for Veggie Breakfast Cupcakes is the perfect “on the go breakfast. It’s also a delicious way to incorporate vegetables into a breakfast dish.

• It was 19th-century British author and social reformer John Ruskin who made the following sage observation: “In order that people may be happy in their work, these three things are needed: they must be fit for it; they must not do too much of it; and they must have a sense of success in it.” • Before the element helium was known to exist on Earth, scientists discovered that it existed on the sun. The newly discovered element was therefore named helium after the Greek god of the sun, Helios. • If you suffer from odontophobia, you’re afraid of teeth. • If you have ever been pregnant (or known someone who has), you might be familiar with a condition sometimes known as “momnesia” or “prego-brain.” It seems pretty common for pregnant women to

forget names, misplace keys and sometimes even make it to work while still wearing their fuzzy slippers. You might be surprised to learn that there is science to support the existence of this phenomenon: Brain scans show that during pregnancy, some of the blood flow in a woman’s brain shifts from the forebrain, responsible for short-term memory and multitasking, to the hindbrain, which takes care of the basics of survival. So the next time you see a pregnant woman in the grocery store wearing bunny slippers, give her a break; she’s building a new person. • A cow was once purchased at auction for $1.3 million. • If you are like the average adult, you will be cheated on one time before you find the person you settle down with. Also, at some point during your dating life you’ll be the cheater. *** Thought for the Day: “A person usually has two reasons for doing something: a good reason and the real reason.” -- Thomas Carlyle (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

THE LAW ACCORDING TO STEVENS by Lisa Welch Stevens, Attorney at Law P.C.

MARIJUANA: IT’S LEGAL - WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW © March, 2014 by Lisa Welch Stevens, Attorney at Law P.C.

R

ecreational use of marijuana, a class 1 controlled substance under United States federal law, is now legal in the State of Colorado. Article XVIII, Section 16 of the Constitution of the State of Colorado provides that “[n]otwithstanding any other provision of law, . . . possessing, using, displaying, purchasing, or transporting marijuana accessories or one ounce or less of marijuana [and] . . . [c]onsumption of marijuana” is “not unlawful and shall not be an offense under Colorado law or the law of any locality within Colorado . . . for persons of twenty-one years or older . . . .” COLO. CONST. art. XVIII, §16. It is important to note, of course, that all of this is still illegal under federal law, although the current administration has indicated that it will not prosecute limited, personal use that complies with state law. That being said, do you have to put up with it? The answer in certain cases is that you do not. There are limitations set forth in the constitutional amendment; and, further, one can contractually limit the use of mari-

Lisa Welch Stevens Attorney at Law, P.C.

For example, the constitutional amendment itself specifically prohibits “consumption that is conducted openly and publicly. . . .” COLO. CONST. art. XVIII, §16(3)(d). In addition, consumption is not permitted “in a manner that endangers others.” Id. And the amendment itself specifically provides that “[n]othing in this section shall prohibit a person, employer, school, hospital, detention facility, corporation or any other entity who occupies, owns or controls a property from prohibiting or otherwise regulating the possession, consumption, use, display, transfer, distribution, sale, transportation, or growing of marijuana on or in that property.” COLO. CONST. art. XVIII, §16(6) (d). So, if you own property, commercial or residential, and you lease it to others, you can prohibit the “possession, consumption, use, display, transfer, distribution, sale, transportation, or growing of marijuana on or in that property” in your lease agreement. If you rent property in a multi-family structure, and the lease agreement prohibits smoking in the individual units, that prohibition is enforceable by the owner or property management company against the recreational smoking of marijuana. If you own or lease property – the latter whether as an owner or a tenant – that is subject to a homeowners’ association, condominium owners’ association or the like, and which in its regulations prohibits smoking, or the emission of “noxious odors, fumes, smoke” or the like, either you yourself or the association can enforce that ban against the smoking of marijuana, whether in individual units or common areas.

If you have a health condition that is exacerbated by second-hand exposure to marijuana smoke, you may have a cause of action under the amendment to prohibit the source of the exposure from smoking marijuana that results in such exposure, in your home or place of employment. Finally, there is the very real risk of secondhand exposure to marijuana smoke resulting in a positive result on a drug test. Many persons are subject to mandatory, and even random, drug-testing as a condition of employment. Through no fault of their own, they may be subject to loss of employment due to an unrelated third party’s legal consumption of marijuana. Unfortunately this is a situation where the Colorado Constitution is silent. The Colorado amendment permitting the recreational use of marijuana was enacted only last year, and did not take effect until

14

1864 Woodmoor Dr., Ste. 215 Monument, CO 80132

a few months ago. As a result, there is no case law interpreting its provisions, and the actual and practical limits on recreational consumption are unknown. That being said, contract law is very clear, and contractual provisions (such as in lease agreements, or association regulations) prohibiting marijuana are enforceable. LIVING GOD’S GIFTS bringing Christ into your financial life

INVESTING FROM A BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVE

by Chuck Maher, CFP®

...BRING CHRIST INTO OUR FINANCIAL LIVES

THAT TAX REFUND AH, THOSE TAX REFUNDS. WHAT SHOULD I DO?

H

opefully your taxes have been filed and if you were not required to pay more in taxes, you have your tax refund in hand or soon will. What are your plans? If you are like many, those checks are found money and will quickly slide through your fingers. However, those checks aren’t really found money they are the return of your hard earned cash – the return of your tax withholding overpayment, your interest free loan to the state and federal governments. So what’s your plan? This year, why not put those dollars to work. Instead of viewing your refunds as a windfall, treat them as the fruit of your labor and used them accordingly. Here are a few suggestions you may want to consider. INVEST IN YOURSELF What are your job skills looking like? Is there anything you need to brush up on? Are there any areas that need improvement? Anything new that you could bring to the table, that would make you a more valuable employee? Use the refund to take a class, a workshop or a self-study program. Think self-improvement. You don’t have to limit yourself to work related concerns. There is a world of things to learn out there. Find something you have wanted to explore and take advantage of the opportunity. INVEST IN YOUR FAMILY I don’t know the size of your refund, but you may want to consider doing something special with those at you love. It could be something as simple as a special dinner celebrating family or a short (or long) vacation. Use your refund to make time that, you otherwise couldn’t afford, to be with and enjoy your family.

ONE MONTH

FREE!! NO OBLIGATION

(719) 465-1153

Life is short again take advantage of the opportunity. INVEST IN YOUR HOME There are always things around the house that are left undone. Maybe a room that needs to be painted – maybe the whole house. You may have a faucet that’s dripping, a carpet that needs repair or a cabinet door that needs adjusting. Your refund could be used to hire the help needed to get some, if not all, of those someday projects you just have not been able to get to…finish! INVEST IN YOUR RETIREMENT If you qualify, you have until April 15 to contribute to a traditional IRA and still be eligible to take a deduction for 2013, even if you have already filed your return. It would require filing an amended return, but that could mean more money in your pocket and more money in your retirement account. If you have already made your 2013 IRA contribution, you could still contribute that refund and get a jump on 2014. For those who are not eligible to take advantage of the traditional IRA, there’s the Roth IRA, which offers tax-free growth and distributions. There are also a multitude of non-tax advantaged investment options available you. Found money can be fun, however, your tax refund is not found money. It is not that twenty dollar bill you found in your suit pocket and it shouldn’t be treated as such. That refund is the return of your money. With a little bit of planning you can put it to work with purpose. “The plans of the diligent are sure of profit, but all rash haste leads certainly to poverty.” Proverbs 21:5 Chuck Maher is a Certified Financial PlannerTM practitioner specializing in Christian values based financial planning and investing.
