ne of the most interesting things about language is how differently it can be spoken while still maintaining its meaning. If you’ve ever encountered someone from the South, for instance, you may have noticed that “y’all” is a term they commonly use. You don’t typically find people saying “y’all” in Colorado unless they’ve come from the South. Similarly, if you’re from the South and you’ve transplanted yourself to Colorado, you might be surprised to find people saying “you guys” instead of “y’all.” It doesn’t matter if that person is actually speaking to a group of men or a group of both women and men. In Colorado, “you guys” refers to any group of people, guys or not.

These subtle differences in ways of speaking, these dialects are what we’re focusing on in this article. So read on, you guys and see if you don’t learn a thing or two about the many ways people in our country speak the English language!

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines dialect as a form of language that is spoken in a particular area and that uses some of its own words, grammar, and pronunciations. Many people confuse dialect with accent, but they are, in fact, different. Pretend, for a moment, that you have cousins from Boston. Let’s say you’re discussing with them the need for them to park their car in the garage. What they say to you would likely sound more like, “Paahk the caah.” That’s an accent.

YAT DIALECT There are many different dialects within the United States and one place where dialects abound is New Orleans and Louisiana. Specifically, the Great New Orleans Area is home to the Yat dialect.

Yat stems from the common use of the greeting “Where y’at?”

The Yat dialect has a strong Louisiana French and Southern American English.

Yat speakers are typically the white, working class population of the blue collar neighborhoods in the area.

Now think back to the example from above about how you would address a group of two or more people. In most places in Colorado, people say you guys.

However, in other parts of the country, people say the following: you all, yous/ youse, you lot, you ‘uns, yinz, you, and y’all. Those different forms of referring to the same thing (a group of people) are different dialects. Good grief, that’s a lot of terms! And good grief just happens to be an oxymoron . . . if you’ll recall the oxymoron article from a couple of weeks ago!

The accent associated with the Yat dialect is a more pronounced version of the New Orleans accent. It often includes varying degrees of Brooklyn-like pronunciations.

Because of a variation in how distinctly a person’s Yat dialect comes through in their speech, it is often possible for people familiar with the dialect to determine whether or not a speaker is of higher or lower income.

The New Orleans Saints, the state’s professional football team has a chant that is linked to the Yat dialect. The chant goes, “Who dat? What dat? Who dat say dey gonne beat dem Saints?” Fans of the team are collectively known as “Who Dat Nation.”

Do you call a Pepsi, Dr. Pepper, or Mountain Dew a soda, pop or coke? In most places in the South, regardless of what the soft drink is that is being referred to, people say coke. Pop is the word typically used by people in the North and

Often, the Yat dialect is confused with Cajun or Creole, especially in Hollywood films. Two productions, HBO’s “Treme” and Werner Herzog’s “The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans,” are more accurate depictions of the area because they feature new Orleans locals speaking Yat or one of its variations.

YOOPER DIALECT The Yooper dialect is another notable dialect within the U.S., centered mainly in the Upper and Lower Peninsula of Michigan, Northeastern Wisconsin and Northern Minnesota. Yooper is strongly influenced by Finnish, French Canadian, Cornish, Scandinavian, German and Native American language.

The Yooper dialect features the use of “eh” at the end of a sentence, which is often associated with Canadian English.

This use of “eh” implies the expectation of an affirmative response from whomever that person is speaking to or to add emphasis to a statement.

Yooper also includes the use of some words that aren’t found in English but that can be traced back to one of the other languages from which it derives. For example, “pank” means to compact or pat down and “chuk” or “chook” means a knit winter cap.

Another notable characteristic of Yooper is the tendency to use a long “a� sound instead of a short “a� sound for words like “bag� and “wagon.� The words in Yooper sound like “bayg� and “waygon.�

HAWAIIAN PIDGIN DIALECT This dialect is a Creole-based language used by many of the residents of Hawaii.

It is heavily influenced by Portuguese, Hawaiian, Cantonese, Japanese, Korean, and to a lesser degree, Spanish. Although both English and Hawaiian are official languages of the state, Hawaiian Pidgin has become more widely used in everyday conversation and is often used in advertising targeted at native Hawaiians.

Some characteristics of the Hawaiian Pidgin dialect include leaving off the L at the end of a word so that “mental� becomes “mento� and “people� becomes “peepo.� Also, as with several New England dialects, Hawaiian Pidgin leaves off the R at the end of a word in favor of an extended version of the last vowel. “Car� becomes “cah� and “letter� becomes “letta.�

In Hawaiian Pidgin, “da� is often used in place of “the.� Similarly, “neva� is used in place of “never� or “didn’t.� Also, “fo� (for) is used in place of the “to� portion of a verb, so “to think� becomes “fo think.�

f you have been thinking of updating your décor, but you are not sure what to do here are a few ideas!

To freshen up your décor without replacing everything in your home look at changing out some key accessories and playing around with color a little.

The type of style you are ultimately trying to achieve will dictate whether you are adding or changing the color in your home. For this post, let’s say you want to go for a more modern style in your living room.

Monotone colors, clean lines, smaller scaled furnishings and a more minimalist approach to accessorizing are a couple of elements used to create a more modern feel. So let’s get a slipcover for your sofa in a soft neutral tone, maybe a steel gray.

Next we want to replace the lamps, let’s look for chrome bases with black shades.

Before you get started determine which, if any, large furniture pieces you are willing to replace remember to take into account your flooring.

For a small, economical change, you will most likely keep whatever flooring you currently have, so you will need to work with it. What color and style is it? That might end up being your jumping off point as far as which pieces will get changed out and which way to go with the color palette.

LONELINESS: THE CONSTANT HEARTACHE

THE FOUR MARKS OF A TRUE FRIEND

A

t the close of my last column I mentioned the four marks of a true friend. This is an expansion and explanation of those four marks.

The first mark of a true friend is their sincere interest in both your happiness and well being. A true friend wants what is best for you and is willing to speak up when they see you wandering in directions that might harm you. They will tell you what they think you need to hear but in a way you can receive it.

This means you can trust them implicitly because they have your best interests at heart. You know they have your back and they will never stab you there! You can confide in them about private matters and be assured of their confidence and best advice. A true friend will never betray or abuse you.

The second mark of a true friend is their profound respect for your principles.

They will never ask you to do something that requires you to compromise your principles. Many a criminal enterprise started with a group of so-called friends who go along to prove their friendship.

Beware the friend that asks you to lie, cheat or steal for them. They are not a true friend. The Bible says, “Bad company ruins good morals.”

The third mark of a true friend is their ability to inspire you to be and do your best. Before I presented the final report I had written for a consulting job that had several criticisms about the client’s organization, I had a true friend read it.

PATHWAY PARENTING I knew some of my report was harshly stated and wanted his input. He walked me through the report and read aloud several sentences he thought should be revised. He was right on all counts. His message to me as a friend was, “I’m here to help you do better.” The opposite, of course, would be the “friend” who always criticizes but never inspires.

The fourth mark of a true friend is their willingness to stand with you in good times and bad. This may be the true test of a true friend. A true friend will rejoice in your victories and weep with your sorrows. A true friend will defend you, stand by you, and even take a bullet for you if necessary. An untrue friend will scoff at you when you fail, criticize you when you make a mistake, laugh at you when you embarrass yourself, and disappear when you go through a crisis.

ight after I pulled into the parking lot of a local grocery store and began the short walk to the store, I noticed a young couple with a little girl as they were getting out of their run-down car. They both looked stressed, tired, and impatient, while the little girl was not acting ‘right’ and the mother became irritated very quickly.

I also noticed that the little girl, who appeared to be around age four, wanted to hold her father’s hand. He refused her request. She cried. He let her hold his hand. My heart went out to her desire for love and affection.

How do you know who is a true friend and who is a faux friend? The best measure is this: True friends share the above qualities with you; they are interested in your happiness and success, they respect your principles, they inspire you to be and do your best, and they stand by you in good times and bad. Untrue friends, on the other hand, are two-faced, insensitive, humorless, dishonest, selfabsorbed, pessimistic, and selfish.

A short time later as I was choosing my items in the grocery store, I saw them again. The little girl had touched something or was doing something annoying and the mother became irritated. The child began to cry at the mother’s harsh reprimand and I could hear the mother also say, “Stop touching things!” as I walked away. I wasn’t sure if I had heard a light slap; I was hoping I hadn’t. It pains me to know when parents hit their children.

And now the most important question: Which are you, a true friend or a faux friend? To find out, take a close look at the people you spend time with. Motivational speaker and author Jim Rohn says, “You are the average of the five people you spend most of your time with.”

Walking away, I thought, ‘Children just want to be children. They touch things, they want to cuddle, they want your attention, they’re curious. They yearn for love, affection, and the freedom to learn.’

Part of me wanted to say something and part of me could see the potential

judgment in their eyes. I was probably �ifteen years older than them. I had my of�ice clothes on, my nice purse and NO children hanging on me asking me for ongoing attention. I wasn’t stressed, hurried, or angry. What would I know about their situation?

Maybe I remember my early parenthood years: the years I worked at McDonald’s for $5.50 an hour as a single mother desperately hoping I would receive child support. Maybe I remembered living paycheck-to-paycheck, even with two jobs, and attending college with the feeling as if my life would never really begin. Maybe I remembered my little cheap car that had no air conditioning and a little girl who wanted my attention all the time and I would willingly give it. I gave it because I knew that ultimately her feelings and assurances were more important than how I felt at any given time. She was my priority.

I was thinking that very thing as I was checking out with my groceries and I saw them again in the checkout lane next to me. “Stop touching that!! I am so sick of this!” I heard the mother say and then the father say, “You are so on my bad list. I’m so sick of this!” Loud enough for customers to turn and see what all the fuss was about.

Our children are only children for so long. Love them. Teach them. Honor their uniqueness and their desire to learn.

• On April 27, 1667, blind poet John Milton sells the copyright to his masterpiece “Paradise Lostâ€? for a mere 10 pounds.

Once printed, the poem was immediately hailed as a masterpiece of the English language. In 1671, he wrote “Paradise Regained,� followed by “Samson Agonistes.�

He died in 1674. • On April 25, 1859, at Port Said, Egypt, ground is broken for the Suez Canal, an artificial waterway intended to stretch 101 miles across the isthmus of Suez and connect the Mediterranean and the Red seas.

When it opened, the Suez Canal was only 25 feet deep, 72 feet wide at the bottom, and 200 feet to 300 feet wide at the surface.

Fewer than 500 ships navigated it in its first year of operation. • On April 24, 1863, the Union army issues General Order No. 100, which provided a code of conduct for Federal soldiers and officers when dealing with Confederate prisoners and civilians. It became the standard for international military law.

• On April 22, 1915, German forces shock Allied soldiers along the Western front by firing more than 150 tons of lethal chlorine gas against two French colonial divisions.

The Germans, perhaps as shocked as the Allies by the devastating effects of the poison gas, failed to take full advantage, and the Allies held most of their positions. • On April 23, 1961, Judy Garland plays Carnegie Hall in what has been called “the greatest night in showbiz history.â€? The concert took place on the one night a week that Broadway performers have off -- Sunday night -- and the audience was therefore a friendly one. • On April 26, 1977, Studio 54, the most famous nightclub in the world, opens its doors. The venue became famous for openly and shamelessly excluding all but the most chic, famous or beautiful patrons.

Studio 54’s golden era lasted less than three years. • On April 21, 1980, Rosie Ruiz, age 26, finishes first in the women’s division of the Boston Marathon. H

ospital stays can make you sick. A study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention discovered that one quarter of patients in hospitals get serious infections.

The study of more than 11,000 patients, reported in the New England Journal of Medicine, looked at antibiotic-resistant bacteria such as bacterium clostridium difficile (commonly know as c. diff) and methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), a staph infection, being acquired in hospitals. Devices, such as catheters and ventilators, were included as the sources of infection. The study estimated that more than 700,000 infections were acquired in hospitals in one year alone.

At the root of the massive numbers of antibiotic-resistant infections is the over-prescription of antibiotics, which reduces their effectiveness.

he kids are losing it. I’ll tell you up front, this article is directed at young people. When I say “young” I don’t necessarily mean children as much as I mean High School and College-aged beings. I don’t mean want to add another criticism to this generation; after all, it is my generation. It seems like every day I hear something negative about “kids these days”.

Among the accusations are that we seem lazy, immoral, unprofessional, bound by our electronic devices, and plenty more.

These stereotypes don’t really bother me for two reasons: 1) these are partly true.

1) Talk to your doctor, ideally before you go into the hospital. Ask what they’ll do to protect you against infections. If you have a catheter, will it be changed every day? How can you prepare in advance to guard against infection?

2) If no relatives or friends are around to represent you in the hospital, speak up! If you don’t see medical staff washing hands in your room before touching you, assume it wasn’t done and say something.

3) Ask if tests have been done to ensure that the right antibiotic is being used.

When people download their favorite bands song for free (surprise!) the artist receives no money in return for their hard work. This will often leave artists in debt to their Record Label, bankrupt, and no longer making those beautiful sounds you so coveted.

There’s a picture going viral on the internet that describes this issue better than I ever could. In the soon-to-be iconic photo, we see a coffee cup and a title boldly stating The Problem. It goes like this – The problem is that people are willing to pay $5 for a cup of coffee that: They can make at home, cost pennies to make, and is gone forever after one use.

Because of this free music epidemic, the quality of music is beginning to suffer.

No longer are the days when an artist or band could spend three years recording a masterpiece album. Instead, labels need singles to come out quick and cheap, leaving little time and money for true art. Artists and labels are looking for a hit song now. Then it’s on to the next. And while some musicians are still out there working to create music that matters, they are now undoubtedly on borrowed time.

But people aren’t willing to pay $1 for a song that: Cost thousands to record, took years of practice to make, and will last a lifetime!

It’s so true! But unfortunately music fans today are spoiled with thousands of illegal download and subscription-based streaming sites that allow users to listen to any song, from any artist, at any time,

The catch is, there’s only one person who can fix it - you. I’m not asking anyone to go out and buy music for the sake of throwing money at major labels and famous pop singers who already have millions of dollars. I just ask that you financially support artists that make the music that you care about. It’s a small step in the right direction; a tactical move in the war to keep art breathing. So take the step and drag that other foot along. Then tell your friend to start walking. If you don’t move fast enough you may notice a change in the atmosphere; the deafening sound of silence.

A NEW HIDING PLACE FOR EASTER EGGS

A

fter the Easter baskets have been put away and the chocolate bunnies are a delicious, melted memory, the colored hard-cooked eggs linger on.

Remember, that although your colored eggs were attractive as the centerpiece for Easter, they are a perishable food and should have been treated that way. If the eggs were left at room temperature for more than two hours, you should not eat them. Cracked or dirty eggs should be discarded.

A wise tip to remember: Use plastic eggs for decorating and hunting so you can keep the real eggs safe to eat. You might be able to find plastic eggs on clearance in stores after Easter, so stock up for next year.

Hard-cooked eggs should be used within one week. Refrigerated fresh eggs can be kept for four to five weeks. Hard-cooked eggs don’t last as long because the cooking process removes the protective coating.

If you’re looking for a unique new way to use up your hard-cooked eggs before the week is out, this recipe for a Roasted Peach and Lemon Shortbread Tart is the perfect answer.

PEACH AND LEMON SHORTBREAD TART This unusual dessert uses hard-cooked egg yolks to make a flaky tart crust. The technique of using hard-boiled egg yolks and potato starch is based on a classic French recipe. If fresh peaches aren’t available, you can use canned and drained peach halves or frozen, thawed and drained frozen peach halves.

Pastry Cream 2 cups whole milk 2/3 cup granulated sugar 1 teaspoon lemon zest 4 large egg yolks 5 tablespoons cornstarch 4 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice or extract Pastry 2 medium hard-cooked egg yolks or 1 large egg yolk 1 3/4 sticks unsalted butter 1/2 cup confectioners’ sugar 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1/4 cup potato starch 1 1/4 teaspoons kosher salt Topping 10 fresh peach halves 1/4 granulated sugar 1/3 cup peach jam 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice 1/2 cup powdered sugar

Make the Pastry Cream: 1. In a saucepan, combine 1 cup of the milk with sugar and lemon zest; bring to a simmer. Remove milk from heat; let stand for 15 minutes.

2. In small bowl, whisk remaining 1 cup milk with yolks and cornstarch until smooth. Slowly whisk egg yolk mixture into warm milk. Bring milk mixture to a simmer over moderate heat, whisking constantly until very thick, about 2 to 3 minutes. Remove from heat and whisk in butter until melted. Stir in vanilla and lemon juice or lemon extract. Scrape cream into a bowl.

Press a piece of plastic wrap directly on the surface and refrigerate until chilled, 2 to 4 hours.

Make the Pastry: 3. Make the pastry: Preheat the oven to 375 F. Spray a 9-inch tart pan with a removable bottom with nonstick cooking spray. Set a stand or hand-held mixer on medium-speed to combine the hard-cooked egg yolks with butter and sugar until smooth, about 2 minutes. Add the flour, potato starch and salt, and beat at low speed until just combined.

Using lightly floured hands, press dough evenly over bottom and up sides of the tart pan. Refrigerate crust for 30 minutes, or until chilled.

4. Bake crust for about 25 to 30 minutes, or until golden brown. Transfer to rack and let stand until cooled, about 1 hour.

Make the Topping: 5. Increase oven temperature to 450 F. Line a baking sheet with parchment or foil paper.

Arrange peach halves cut side up on lined pan and sprinkle all over with the sugar.

Roast for about 20 to 30 minutes, until the peaches are tender and lightly browned for fresh peaches, and 7 to 10 minutes for canned or frozen and thawed peach halves.

Let peaches stand until completely cooled, about 30 minutes.

6. Place jam into a microwave-safe bowl.

Mix jam with the lemon juice and cook on high in microwave until melted about 1 to 2 minutes. Set aside to cool.

7. Unmold the crust and transfer to serving plate. Using a small offset spatula or the back of a small spoon, spread the cream evenly in the crust. Arrange the peaches on the cream, cut sides down, and brush with the melted jam mixture. Place powdered sugar in a sifter and dust top of tart with the sugar. Cut the tart and serve at once.

• If you’re like 87 percent of American adults, you use the Internet. The only thing I find surprising about this statistic is that there are 13 percent of adults who don’t use it.

• In a recent survey, more Americans said they would have a hard time giving up the Internet than said they’d have a hard time giving up TV. • Those interested in maritime history (and practically everyone else, for that matter) are familiar with the story of the Titanic, which struck an iceberg and sank on the night of April 15, 1912. It’s interesting to note, though, that in 1898 a book called “Futility,” by Morgan Robertson,

described an almost identical scenario: The ship in the novel was called Titan, and, like the Titanic, it was trying to break a speed record for crossing the Atlantic.

The Titan was declared to be unsinkable, and it didn’t have enough lifeboats for all the passengers. On its fictional voyage in the month of April, it struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic Ocean and sank, resulting in the deaths of almost all the passengers.

DOING BUSINESS WITH MARIJUANA RELATED BUSINESSES:

oth recreational and medicinal use of marijuana are now legal in Colorado. However, this means simply that the State of Colorado may not criminally prosecute persons for growing, selling, transporting, possessing, using or consuming marijuana within the state, within certain specified limits. Subdivisions of the state – such as cities and towns - may prohibit the growing and selling of marijuana and the production of marijuana products within their limits, but still may not prosecute persons for transporting, possessing, using or consuming marijuana. However the state legalization of recreational and medical marijuana does not change the fact that it remains illegal under federal law. In addition, it does not mean that persons – whether natural persons or legal persons such as corporations – cannot contractually or by rule, regulation or policy prohibit it. One might be safe from criminal prosecution; however, that does not mean one is safe from other types of penalties.

It is clear that there may be a lot of money to be made in dealing with marijuana related businesses. However transacting with such businesses may present certain legal pitfalls for the unwary. It is important to remain cognizant of such pitfalls before deciding whether to do business with the marijuana industry.

For example a common provision in many contracts - whether loan agreements, lease agreements, or employment agreements - prohibits the parties from engaging in any acts in violation of federal, state, or local laws, regulations, ordinances, etc., in relation to the subject matter of the contract. As the growth, distribution, transportation, sale, transfer, possession, use consumption of marijuana or marijuana related products remains illegal under federal law, a party bound by such a contract would be in material breach of that contract by transacting with a marijuana related business.

One might have a limited liability company that, as an investment, owns real property and leases it to a recreational marijuana retailer. If that company has mortgaged that real property, and if the loan agreement mortgaging the property has such a standard contract provision, the company has breached that loan agreement by leasing to the marijuana retailer. The lender may then accelerate all remaining payments due under the loan and/or potentially foreclose on the property.

Or, one might have a longtime retail business which decides to convert to retail marijuana sales. That business may

properly obtain all licenses, approvals, permits, etc. legally permitting it to do so from the point of view of the government; however, it may then be in material breach of the existing lease agreement under which it leases its retail location.

Commercial lease agreements almost universally prohibit use of the leased premises for any purpose in violation of any federal, state, or local laws, regulations, ordinances, etc. Such a business may find itself summarily evicted from its leased premises, and still be on the hook for all remaining rent payments due under the lease.

Employers may still have “zero tolerance” drug policies which prohibit the use and/or possession of marijuana by employees. Even if there is no written employment agreement between the employer and the employee, if the employer has such a policy, he is contractually free

to terminate any employee who – albeit legally – possesses or uses marijuana.

The take-away for businesses is this: carefully review all your contracts and other agreements for such provisions, before deciding to transact with legal marijuana businesses.
