IMPORTANT INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENTS OF THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION In 1712, Englishman Thomas Newcomen invented the first steam engine. The steam engine played a major role in the revolution because it enabled machinery, locomotives and ships to be powered by steam.

Those innovations themselves helped push the Industrial Revolution forward but they possibly wouldn’t have been as successful without the steam engine.

The Industrial Revolution began in Great Britain in the late 1700s. As technology progressed, it expanded throughout Europe and made its way across the Atlantic to America. The British passed legislation to prohibit the exportation of their technology and skilled workers in an attempt to maintain their position as an industrial powerhouse, but obviously that didn’t work and by the early 1900s, the United States had become the world’s foremost industrial nation.

The key thing to know about the Industrial Revolution was that it marked a period of transition from the old way of producing things to the new way. The old way was by hand. Clothes were sewn by hand. Tools were created by hand. Everything was done with those two appendages we have hanging from our arms.

The new way was the way of the machine.

Machines were developed to make production faster and more efficient. Some machines relied on new technology like steam

of threads all at once. Prior to his invention, only one spool could be produced at a time. But his invention, the spinning jenny, greatly increased the productivity of each person using it. By the time Hargreaves died, over 20,000 spinning jennys were being used across Britain.

Another innovation in the area of textiles was the power loom, invented by Englishman Edmund Cartwright in the 1780s. The power loom made it possible for a machine to weave cloth rather than having the cloth woven by hand.

Central to many of the new developments in machinery were developments in the iron industry. A cheaper, easier method to producing cast iron was created by Englishman Abraham Darby in the early 1700s. He determined that the answer was the use of a coke-fueled furnace rather than a charcoalfired one. The coke in question is not the carbonated beverage you may enjoy with your lunch. We’re talking about a fuel that is made from coal but contains a high carbon content and has very few impurities.

Prior to Darby’s discovery, iron-making used large quantities of charcoal, which was produced by burning wood. Concern about the dwindling forests was a motivating factor in switching from charcoal to coke.

Also key to the Industrial Revolution was the development of an inexpensive process for mass-producing steel. Henry Bessemer discovered this process in the 1850s and because both iron and steel were crucial materials used in building just about everything, the new process was an instant hit.

IMPORTANT TRANSPORTATION DEVELOPMENTS OF THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION Prior to the development of the steam engine, raw materials and other goods were hauled and distributed by horse-drawn wagons or boats along rivers and canals.

That all changed when American Robert Fulton built the first steamboat in the early 1800s that proved to be successful for commercial use. By the mid-1800s, steamboats were routinely used to carry cargo across the Atlantic Ocean.

About the same time as the steamboat made its way onto the scene, steam-powered locomotives also appeared. In the early 1800s, Englishman Richard Trevithick developed and built the first railway steam locomotive. Less than 50 years later, Britain

The telegraph made communication infinitely easier and you can probably guess when it was developed. Right in the middle of the Industrial Revolution. Englishmen William Cooke and Charles Wheatstone patented the first commercial electrical telegraph in 1837. Three years later, the railways had picked up on the CookeWheatstone telegraph system and in 1866, a telegraph cable was laid across the Atlantic.

Because people migrated to the cities to find jobs, overcrowded and inadequate living conditions were common. Disease was rampant and pollution became a serious concern.

The Industrial Revolution also brought innovations in the field of banking and finance. The first official stock exchange was established in London in the 1770s and the New York Stock Exchange was founded about 20 years later.

• The term “ludditeâ€? refers to a person who was opposed to the changes being brought forth during the Industrial Revolution. It’s rumored that a man named Ned Ludd was behind the protests that resulted in attacks on factories and destroyed machinery but there isn’t concrete proof of his existence.

THE DOWNSIDE OF INDUSTRIALIZATION While the Industrial Revolution was arguably one of the most important times in our history, it wasn’t all good for everyone. The working class often spent long hours in unsafe conditions and children were sent to work to help families make ends meet. In the early 1860s, it was estimated that onefifth of the whole population of Britain that worked in the textile industry was younger than 15.

away white flies and cucumber beetles. Nasturtiums also attract many beneficial predatory insects that kill harmful insects in your garden. Chives are another one that has a really pretty bloom, is great for cooking and it repels aphids and carrot rust fly.

PLANTING YOUR OWN INSECT REPELLENTS

J

ust in case you needed another reason to plant herbs, I’ve got a really good one. It’s not because they are wonderful to cook with, or make tea with, or even because of their amazing health benefits. It’s because if you plant herbs along with your other flowers and vegetables they will help fight off many unwanted pests! I love anything that achieves more than one purpose. Even better is having something that has many uses and is constantly rejuvenating itself!

In addition to having insect repelling qualities, many herbs are also planted for their flowers. Herbs like marigolds are avoided by deer, repel rabbits, and are also effective at repelling nematodes and white fly. Nasturtiums actually trap aphids as well as keep

Many of the same herbs used for cooking are also great at deterring pests. Garlic repels aphids, root maggot, white flies, and vampires (so I’m told). Both Oregano and Sage repel the cabbage moth. Cilantro, as well as making great salsa, repels aphids, potato beetles and spider mites and Dill attracts predatory wasps that eat caterpillars. Pennyroyal and Spearmint are both your official ‘Ant B-Gone’ herbs and the Colorado potato beetle can be repelled by Flax and Horseradish. Those slimy slugs and snails can be kept away with Rosemary. And while eating a salad Caprese, the Tomato Hornworm (yuck!) is repelled by Basil (Yum!).

“Garage Sale of Biblical Proportions” was the sign our neighbors (Jeff & Marie) erected to announce their garage sale last weekend. The wife and I figured this was a real can’t miss event, so we ambled over to see what goodies they had that we couldn’t live without. Fortunately, there was no treasure in their trash so we went home empty handed.

While looking over their knick-knack table (“You can have anything on the table for only 10¢ each”), and fiddling with a broken camera tripod (“Oh, I suppose I could let you have it for only five dollars”), Jeff came up to me and whispered, “Ron, do you know anyone who can use a waterbed?”

“I didn’t know people were still sleeping on them,” I mused.

“Well I have one in my basement and Marie is pretty upset that I’ve kept it. I could let it go for only fifty bucks.”

I looked at him with a question mark on my face, “Gosh, Ron,” he whined, “I paid $650 for it a few years ago.” He was still whispering.

First of all, remember that some bargains aren’t bargains no matter how cheap they are. It doesn’t matter that you paid $1300 for your Macintosh 512K computer some time in the last century it’s not worth $89. Heck, it’s not worth 89 cents. And don’t try the “it’s an antique” sales pitch.

It is not an antique - it’s obsolete. The same goes for those VCR tapes, your old bowling ball, and the 2010 calendar from Jamaica (But it has such pretty pictures on it!).

ost children are taught to feel shame at some point in their lives. That may come from any environment. When children are taught to be ashamed, they grow into adults who feel shame. That shame is never productive and covers the energy of passion. Passion is critical when one wants to seek a state of joy that remains present.

Another thing - separate your stuff into men’s, women’s, and children’s stuff. I don’t like to look through a box of miscellaneous hardware and have to fight off a bunch of dusty Avon bottles.

Sometimes, people carry the perception that children need to be shamed in order to prevent future negative or ‘bad’ behaviors. Rather, a child who is taught to be ashamed of himself or herself will develop a false belief around self-worth. That false belief can be conscious or subconscious. What if, instead of teaching shame, which can be seen as convenient, everyone taught compassion, consequences of actions, and integrity? If a child has learned those elements, he or she would not feel the need to engage in negative or ‘bad’ behavior. However, teaching compassion, consequences of actions, and integrity is not convenient and it takes walking the ‘talk’.

Also, while I’m poking around your stuff, don’t stare at me like you recognize me from America’s Most Wanted. I’m not the guy. I’m just someone with too little money and too much time.

I whispered back, “Jeff, why are you whispering?”

Jeff called a few minutes ago “You know that water bed I was telling you about? I couldn’t sell the stupid thing, so I cut it up and made shelves out of it. Marie is a lot happier and now we have a place to put all the junk we didn’t sell.”

He glanced over his shoulder to see if his wife was listening and he said, “Marie wants the darn thing out of the basement because it was the bed my first wife and I

But, how can one feel self-compassionate when he or she is feeling ashamed? That person will not feel self-compassion, unless he or she works at healing the shame. A way to heal shame is to uncover the origin of shame teaching, understanding how the shame has been operating, and then begin making different choices in how the shame is engaged. Stop engaging the shame.

That does not mean suppress it; it means to honestly look at shame, its origin (without judgment), and to diligently begin making new choices.

While I am glad you had such a good outcome, one has to be very careful when comparing one’s own treatment with someone else’s. There may be subtle differences between you and the other person that you aren’t aware of. Or, as may be in this case, surgery techniques may have changed over time.

TREATMENTS NOT SAME FOR TOE JOINT PAIN DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an 82-year-old male. In my younger years, I participated vigorously in sports. As a result, I ended up with a degenerated joint in the big toe of my right foot. Forty years ago, the doctors gave me an artificial joint. Prior to the joint installation, I was in severe pain. After the procedure, I had no pain or problems of any kind with the joint.

My oldest daughter has a bad joint in her big toe that gives her a lot of pain, plus problems walking. Her doctors tell her that they will not replace that joint anymore.

Instead they propose to fuse the joint. She would be off her feet for six weeks, and she would have to undergo eight weeks of intensive therapy and learn to walk differently. What’s missing here? Why would they not do the procedure for her, when my procedure was so successful? -- A.E.C. ANSWER: First off, not everyone with a “bad joint” in the big toe -- usually a bunion -- needs surgery. Many people get relief from conservative measures, such as shoe modification, orthotics, night splinting and stretching. However, if pain or difficulty walking persists despite conservative measures, then referral to a foot surgeon is appropriate.

There are more than 150 surgeries described for treatment of bunion deformities. Joint replacement (arthroplasty) is still being done, but a 2005 trial comparing a fusion procedure (arthrodesis) to joint replacement found arthrodesis to have superior pain control. Other studies have found the two procedures to have very similar

Swiss researchers have discovered that green-tea extract helps working memory, and they have the results to prove it. For the study, they had male volunteers drink a soft drink that had green-tea extract in it, and then do memory tasks. What they discovered in MRIs taken afterward is that the tea extract caused “increased connectivity between the parietal and the frontal cortex of the brain.” The results of the memory tasks improved as well. The possibilities for the future are that green tea could be used in treatment of dementia.

Wait, it’s a trap!

You’ve probably heard that before. Maybe it was in a blockbuster film, or perhaps you were carousing around the inside of an ancient Egyptian tomb when your assistant kindly warned you; either way, it’s not a phrase most people are unaware of.

I for one know a trap far too well. It’s the same one I fall into every late spring/early summer. It’s like an annual tradition at this point. I always get too excited, too early in thinking that the Colorado Rockies are a potential MLB playoff team.

This year just feels different though, doesn’t it? It’s not just because Charlie Blackmon looks more like Jose Bautista then well, um, Charlie Blackmon; or because the Rockies are rolling without much help from last year’s main contributors Carlos Gonzalez

In the lab, researchers provided placebos (they contain nothing) or actual caffeine tablets (equal to a cup or two of coffee) before having participants review images. A day later they were tested on their memory of images, some of which they’d seen the day before. Researchers found a “deeper level” of memory retention than in previous studies where the caffeine was given first and were therefore able to call the caffeine a memory enhancer.

MOTHER’S DAY THE HEALTHY WAY

M

other’s Day is a wonderful time to celebrate mothers and mothers-to-be. It’s also a good time for women who want to become pregnant to focus on a plan for a healthy future.

To have a healthy baby, you should practice good nutrition before, during and after pregnancy. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans include recommendations that can help women consume adequate nutrients, limit possible toxins and be physically active.

Women of childbearing age who may become pregnant: • For adequate iron intake, eat food high in heme-iron (such as meats) and iron-rich plant foods (dark green, leafy vegetables such as spinach) or iron-fortified foods. To help increase the absorption of iron from plants and iron-fortified foods, pair them with ones high in vitamin C. • To decrease the risk of birth defects, consume 400 mcg (micrograms) of folic acid daily from fortified foods or supplements, in addition to eating foods that contain folate. Folate is a naturally occurring form of vitamin B-9, found in food, while folic acid is synthetically produced. As with most vitamins, the natural form is preferred, and better for absorption. It is required for numerous body functions, including DNA synthesis and repair, cell division and cell growth. A deficiency of vitamin B-9 can lead to anemia in adults, and slower development in children. • Limit ďŹ sh consumption to two servings per week to avoid high levels of mercury.

Include fish or shellfish that is low in mercury, such as shrimp, light canned tuna, salmon, pollock and catfish. • Avoid consuming alcoholic beverages.

Pregnant women: • To decrease the risk of birth defects, consume 600 mcg per day of vitamin B9 from fortified foods or supplements, in addition to consuming foods that naturally contain folate. Vitamin B-9 is especially important for proper fetal development. • If no medical or obstetric complications are present, do at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity on most, if not all, days of the week. • Avoid physical activity that has a high risk of falling or abdominal trauma. • Limit ďŹ sh consumption to two servings per week to avoid high levels of mercury.

Include fish or shellfish that is low in mercury. • Avoid consuming alcoholic beverages. • Avoid eating or drinking unpasteurized milk or any products made from unpasteurized milk; raw or partially cooked eggs, or foods that contain raw eggs; raw or undercooked meat and poultry; raw or undercooked fish or shellfish; unpasteurized juices; raw sprouts. • Eat certain deli meats and hot dogs/frank-

furters only if they have been reheated to steaming hot.

n my last article I discussed “nonos” for governments or governmental officials during election campaigns. But what about when the campaigning is over? What about “back-room deals” with the “powers that be” in the apocryphal “smokefilled rooms”? Does the public have the right to know what those officials are up to after they are elected? Well, yes, legally. In practice, does the public actually or always know? We all learned about Tammany Hall in our school history or civics classes.

Colorado has an open meetings law named, appropriately enough, the “Sunshine Law”. C.R.S. §24-6-401 et seq. In general, anytime government officials meet to discuss public business, or to take official action, and there are more than a certain number of them participating in the meeting (this includes meeting by telephone,

First, advance public notice of the meeting, its time, place, and subject matter, must be given to the public, and in a timely manner.

Second, minutes must be taken of the meeting, and made available to the public.

Third, members of the public must be permitted to be present at the meeting.

Fourth, “meetings” conducted by or actions “taken” by e-mail mean that those e-mails must be available to the public.

Fifth, in most cases “secret ballots” are not permitted and, even when they are, the results of the vote (the “tallies” for and against without identifying the officials) must be made public.

There are, of course, exceptions to this general rule. Government officials can meet privately, in “executive session”, to discuss certain matters or to receive legal advice.

However, those executive sessions must be recorded, which recordings can only be obtained upon court order, with good cause. In addition the fact that the government officials are going to meet in executive session must be announced to the public, as

doctor had finished. She was sent to the ER, then home, and finally back to the ER before it was discovered that the doctor had hit an artery, while performing the biopsy. My wife was slowly bleeding to death.

A surgeon was called to discuss our options with us but, the news was grim. We were informed that surgery to correct the issue would likely result in death. Of course, we were devastated. The doctors told us that they would do angioplasty to try and stop it. Carleen ended up spending several weeks in ICU before being released, only to discover within days that she was still bleeding internally.

This was only the beginning. Her lung had collapsed, constant fevers, low blood counts and every breath was painful. To top it all off, she had a baby that had to be weaned that she couldn’t care for and was on oxygen 100% of the time for 4 months after her biopsy.

Because of the Hepatitis C, and the botched biopsy, the last few years have been filled with countless hospital trips and doctor visits. These events have been traumatizing to my wife and she has suffered tremendously. Each time we left the hospital, we had no way of knowing if the bleeding had stopped for sure. Also, Carleen’s condition and frequent medical needs severely hindered her ability to care for and bond with our newborn son. Out of sheer necessity, and love for my family, I had to step up and be Mr. Mom. This experience has been filled with pain, fear, and uncertainty for my family and I.

Carleen continued on with the pregnancy and on November 29, 2011 our son and sixth child, Kyle was born. Eight weeks after Kyle’s birth, Carleen’s doctor recommended that she have a liver biopsy. It was supposed to be a short outpatient procedure and we were curious to see the results after her having had Hepatitis C for so many years.

Also, we would soon need to discuss treatment methods and things we could do to put this all behind us. So, we scheduled the procedure.

Carleen has yet to have treatment due to all the complications that have occurred. However, with the new drugs and treatments coming out in the next few years we are looking forward to getting her healed!

As a part of raising money and awareness for the American Liver Foundation my son Kaleb and I are climbing Mt. Rainier in June. It is not an easy climb but, it will be worth all of the effort if we can help someone be aware that they might have this disease and the importance of getting tested. There is a lot of media exposure around other diseases, which is needed but, not enough for liver disease and it’s time for that to change. Help us get to the top of Mt. his year’s inaugural event will be held Friday, 13 June at the Monument Hill Country Club in Monument, Colorado. All net proceeds from the tournament will be re-invested to help residents in the local community via Tri-Lakes Lions Club projects/services, and a monetary donation to The Home Front Cares™, an organization that provides emergency financial support for our Colorado service members, veterans and military families.

This price includes 18 holes of golf, riding cart, unlimited range balls, New Orleans BBQ dinner, awards, and a complimentary green fee per player at Monument Hill Country Club for future use.
