ook around. The earth is full of natural beauty, from blossoming apple trees to snow-capped mountains. Underneath all that beauty lies another type of beautiful gift from Mother Nature; one that mankind has admired for thousands of years.

A gemstone is typically defined as a piece of mineral that, when cut and polished can be used to make jewelry or other adornments. Traditional classification based on the distinction first noted by the Ancient Greeks separates gemstones into two categories: precious and semi-precious. The precious stones as we define them in modern times are diamonds, rubies, emeralds and sapphires. All other gemstones are considered semi-precious.

• Amethyst – creates clarity of thought. It’s said to aid in sobriety and is helpful when battling alcohol, food or drug addictions.

• Apatite – thought to be a gemstone of communication. It’s said to help stuttering and hypertension. Apatite is believed to help you overcome sadness and grief and is thought to help you fight of viruses.

Some semi-precious stones are rarer than poor-quality versions of precious stones, making those semi-precious ones more valuable.

• Diamond – thought to protect the wearer from poison and to have detoxifying properties. (Maybe that’s why celebrities wear them so often . . . diamonds are part of their detox diets!)

These are just some of the supposed powers that gemstones are thought to have. But many claim that some gemstones contain actual healing powers. Here’s a taste of what they may be able to do:

Why are some gemstones precious and others aren’t? Well, it depends on how rare that particular stone is. The rarer the stone, the more precious it’s considered to be. Precious stones are also categorized as such due to their quality. In their purest forms, all are translucent with very rich color, except for the colorless diamond. They are all very hard as well.

There are many, many more gemstones out there that are said to contain healing properties. In fact, Abbes Hildegard von Bingen actually wrote the book on the healing powers of gemstones to alleviate certain issues in her book “Physica.” The book inspired a school of thought known as Hildegard medicine and seems to largely focus on ways to help with mental or emotional issues.

For example, in an excerpt from her book which was written several hundred years ago, she said, “Who is dull and would like to be clever, should, in a sober state, frequently lick with the tongue on a sapphire, because the gemstone’s warmth and power, combined with the saliva’s moisture, will expel the harmful juices that affect the intellect. Thus, the man will attain a good intellect.” If it truly was that easy, perhaps we’d all be as smart as Albert Einstein.

Other powers are scientifically supported such as piezoelectricity, which is the ability of some materials to generate an electric potential when subjected to mechanical stress. This discovery is how the highly accurate quartz clocks were developed, through the use of quartz oscillators.

For thousands of years, people have attached specific meanings to specific gemstones. In fact, it’s thought that the Assyrians were the first to do this as early as 1400 B.C. During the first century, however, Flavius Josephus dedicated a specific gemstone to each of the zodiac signs. If you wore the correct stone each month, you ensured that you had access to certain healing or magical powers. Naturally, not everyone was wealthy enough to be able to obtain a stone for each month but if you could, you were thought to have “equipped” yourself with power and protection for the entire year.

Stupid Thing No. 2: The Mini-Maxi Mistake. This is when you maximize the bad things that happen while at the same time you minimize the good things that happen.

It is as if the good things you have done never score as high as the bad things. You might say something like this, “I know I closed five big deals last week, but I lost one on Thursday and I feel like a failure.”

For some reason the bad things that happen to us or the mistakes we make almost always get a more extended review and have a more permanent impact on us than the good things that happen to us.

Think about all the shoulds and oughts you have in your vocabulary. “I should be doing this; I ought to do that; I am supposed to be doing whatever.” “Should” statements more often reflect the expectations of others rather than what you want or you desire. Something is NOT wrong with you because you do not meet up with all the expectations of others.

Stupid Thing No 5: Self-Applied Negative Labels. What are the negative words you use to describe yourself? Do you call yourself lazy or ugly or dumb or unlucky or a loser? Think about it for a moment, why would you call yourself names like that when you would never speak those words to a good friend? Self-applied negative labels stick. Only you can un-stick them.

Stupid Thing No. 6: The Compliment Brush-off. When someone pays you a compliments your hair style you say, “Oh, I need to call my hairdresser and get it shaped.” Do you know what you are supposed to say when someone gives you a compliment? “Thank you very much!”

How hard is that?

Remember what Forrest Gump’s mother taught him? Stupid is as stupid does. So take a moment and review this list one more time and determine to no longer be stupid when it comes to the way you think and speak about yourself.

You just have to find what works well for you. I speak from experience when I say that randomly piling leaves and clippings from your spring garden clean-up in a corner of your yard, will eventually break down to a nice rich earthy soil. But even when strictly using yard waste and no kitchen scraps you will notice the occasional pocket gopher or rabbit helping themselves to a convenient snack, but a homemade or purchased compost bin can discourage these late night thieves.

COMPOSTING AROUND WILDLIFE

C

omposting is something that just makes sense. Why pay to have valuable nutrients hauled away just to buy compost for your garden later? Adding your own compost back into your soil saves landfill space while improving your soil structure. If you have been putting off having a compost pile because you’re worried it will be like opening an all you can eat buffet for the local wildlife, just be mindful of what you add to it.

Much like gardening, there is rarely a wrong way to make a compost pile.

My pile did break down eventually. I have to admit though, that it was about a year my pile sat there. In truth, if you want your pile to break down faster there is kind of an art to it. The right balance of both green plant material (grass clippings, flower and vegetable parts, etc.) and dried plant material (dried leaves, twigs, straw, etc.) inside a compost bin, will break down much faster. Alternating equal layers will help your compost pile reach the right amount of nitrogen. Soil microbes that break down the plant material need nitrogen to feed on and the microbes also need steady amounts of moisture or they can dry up and die.

Materials that readily compost include leaves, straw, green parts from disease free flowers and vegetables, and small amounts of twigs, weeds (free of seeds) and grass clippings.

You might also choose to compost kitchen waste like egg shells, coffee grounds and vegetable scraps. Whether you do that or not might depend on the amount of curious wildlife you have around your home. It is not advised, however, to compost meat, bones or dairy products as they will attract raccoons, bears and rodents as well as every cat and dog in your neighborhood.

So after every few layers you should water your pile and keep it lightly moist throughout the year. Keeping your pile too moist, on the other hand, will deprive your microbes of oxygen and your pile will give off a rotting smell the neighbors might not appreciate.

Late spring is when alliums of every kind are coming out of the earth. And while many varieties of onions keep for months in cool, dry storage, fresh onions are a taste treat not to be missed.

Right now, you’ll find leeks; red, white and yellow bulb onions; scallions, also known as green onions; and shallots at your local farmer’s market. Start there if you can. But if not, your local grocery would have to shut its doors if it couldn’t provide a decent supply and variety of onions.

There is a difference, however, between scallions (green onions) and spring onions. Spring onions are very young bulb onions, such as the white, yellow or red variety.

You can tell the difference between a spring onion and a scallion by the size of the bulb. The bulb of a spring onion will be fat and round, while the scallion/green onion will be thin and narrow. When shopping for any onion, make sure the bulb feels firm to the touch. With green or spring onions, look for those with firm, straight stalks.

They should still be bright in color with springy roots sprouting from the bulb end.

A wonderful distinction of the scallion/ green onion is that it provides a combination of nutritional benefits -- those of onions as well as greens. It also has an unmistakable flavor, separate from other bulb onions.

The white of young bulb onions, as well as scallions, is usually sharper than that of large bulb onions, and the more fibrous green stalk has a hot, unmistakable mineral flavor that can punch up a dish in no time. When heated, though, those traits become even more interesting, as the hot and sharp turns a little soft and sweet. This flavorful trait is what makes my recipe for Buttered White Fish with Charred Scallions so delicious.

CUTTING DISABILITY RISK IS NO SWEAT

he British Medical Journal has reported some findings that will cheer quite a number of seniors: We don’t necessarily have to do strenuous workouts to lower our risk of becoming disabled.

During the two-year study, 1,680 participants ages 49 to 83 in Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island wore accelerometers to measure the intensity and duration of their daily living activities. Key activities included cooking, grocery shopping, making phone calls, walking across the room, bathing and getting dressed.

All of the participants were free of disability but were either at risk for knee osteoarthritis or already had it.

ast week, my wife and I were given quite a scare. Our seemingly perfectly healthy Golden Retriever suddenly had a tennis ball-sized lump right under his jaw. It’s like a radioactive rollie pollie wedged his way in there and snuggled up. It all happened overnight. It was just there. Now I’m not one of those totally crazy people who equates my dog’s health and suffering with that of human – but you better bet my Wife and Mother-in-law are.

Sure enough we rushed “Laker” down to the Animal Hospital and got him fixed up.

It was an infection allegedly caused by a bite mark from a fellow canine. Investigation is still underway on the culprit, but our puppy is now back to normal; life goes on.

It makes you wonder why the connection between dog and man is so strong. I know some folks prefer cats - but I’m not one of

I decided to investigate the rumors of man’s best friend being the race of pooch.

It turned out to be extremely true when I stumbled upon a recent study that shows the life-saving ability of dogs.

“Science People” are now unanimously saying that dogs are actually able to sniff out cancer in their owners! What’s more amazing is their research shows that trained scent-sniffing dogs can detect cancer with an accuracy rate higher than the most advanced lab procedures. That sounds pretty amazing, but not when you take a closer look at what a dog’s nose is actually capable of.

Which leads me to the most amazing discovery of all – dogs are able to smell cancer in their owners even at Stage Zero.

This is because a dog constantly smells its surroundings and has an instinct to protect those it loves. If you use a different deodorant, your dog can tell. If you cut your finger, your dog can tell. All of those things are detected by smell; just like cancer.

Strangely enough, there would be an extremely subtle change in the scent of your breathe and the dog would notice.

The canine is capable of smelling in parts per trillion. Imagine cutting yourself and a drop of your blood falls into Monument Lake. From any spot in that lake, a dog could sniff out the drop of blood. It’s what the new generation would call ‘straight up gangsta!’ (And what the older generation

VERY LOW HEART RATE TIED TO SLEEP APNEA DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 65-year-old male in fairly good health. I do a bit of running. I’ve checked my blood pressure and pulse lately and have started monitoring it.

My pulse is always in the 40s or low 50s. I went to the hospital to get some blood work done and have an EKG. They almost didn’t let me go home. My pulse was reading 35, so the doctor sent me to the outpatient department. I wore an all-day heart-rate monitor. It did register in the 30s overnight.

I eat right, don’t smoke and am athletic, so my doctor couldn’t recommend anything.

Is there a problem with a low pulse? When I get older, how low will it drop? -- C.W. ANSWER: Bradycardia (“brady” for “slow,” “cardia” for “heart”) usually is not a problem in people who have no symptoms. However, heart rates in the 30s make me nervous, and they make most cardiologists start thinking very seriously about pacemakers. My colleague, Dr. Rob Campagna, a cardiologist at Weill-Cornell, tells me that at heart rates in the 30s and below, most people have symptoms, even if they are subtle. He also reminded me that sleep apnea, a condition I have written about several times, is a cause of bradycardia and ought to be considered in people with slow rates at nighttime.

• On May 29, 1922, the United States Supreme Court rules that organized baseball did not violate antitrust laws as alleged by the Baltimore franchise of the defunct Federal League in 1915. The Supreme Court held that organized baseball is not a business, but a sport.

• On May 30, 1593, playwright Christopher Marlowe, 29, is killed in a brawl over a bar tab. y children used to drive me insane singing the song quoted above. What an earworm! However, I thought of it today while researching a defendant one of my clients needs to sue. The lesson from the song is: you can change your name, but you are still you, after all, at least in certain circumstances.

My client paid a business in advance to have several of a certain product manufactured to specific measurements, and was told the products would be delivered and installed in 12 – 14 days. They were not.

The owner of the business is not returning any phone calls – why should she? She already has all of my client’s money.

Solution: sue the business in small claims court. My client does have a written contract, which shows she paid the business in full. We’ll call the business whose con-

tract it is “Home Products 4 Less!”. The contract, we’ll say, is dated September 30, 2013. It is now May 16, 2014.

Interesting! Company #1 lists the woman with whom my client has been dealing – we’ll call her Mary Contrary – as a contact for it. An address of 123 Buckle Street in Colorado Springs is listed for her. But wait – Company #2 lists as its sole owner a Barry Contrary, who also has an address of 123 Buckle Street in Colorado Springs.

Do you think Mary and Barry Contrary are related? And why do they each, separately, have a business with such similar names?

Hmmmm! Company #2 was not formed until February 1, 2014 – right after Mary Contrary stopped returning my client’s phone calls. What do you know: Mary Contrary thinks she can now continue to operate her business through Company #2, and can just ignore any debts owed by Company #1, and any court judgments against Company #1. No doubt, Company #1 has no assets or money anymore, for anyone to collect against. And, after all, Company #2 has a different owner, doesn’t it – Mary’s husband Barry - so no one can claim it is just the same company as Company #1.

Is all lost for my client and other unhappy customers?

Maybe not. It is pretty clear here that Com-

Before we file the lawsuit, I need to make sure I have the name of the business correct. So I search online with the Business Division of the Colorado Secretary of State.
