“Video games are bad for you? That’s what they said about rock-n-roll.” – Shigeru Miyamoto, Japanese designer

FIRST NATIONAL BANK MONUMENT

ooking at today’s video games, it’s probably hard to envision the humble beginnings from which they came. Gone are pixelated images of space ships or street fighters moving jerkily across the screen. Now, we have video games that can actually create a character that looks exactly like we do. The good old days of having to screw in the video game console to the back of your huge boxy television are gone. Gaming consoles have their own input spot out of many built into our massive flat screen TVs. It’s true, gaming technology has definitely evolved. But where did it all begin? How did we ever think the technology we had back then was so great, given what we’ve got now? Snippetz wanted to find out where the obsession with video games began and as always, we’ve put it all together for you right here!

1972 – Magnavox started production of its own video game console, called the Magnavox Odyssey after seeing a presentation by Baer’s team of the Brown Bow. The Magnavox Odyssey was marketed to Magnavox TV dealers and boasted 12 games, played using one of six different cartridges, all of which featured dots and lines on the screen. Due to a false rumor that the console only worked with Magnavox TVs, the system’s popularity suffered. At this time, Nolan Bushnell founds the Atari Company.

WHERE DID IT ALL BEGIN?

THE BUSINESS DIRECTORY

Most of us have probably heard of the video game, Pong. And most of us probably think that was the earliest form of in-home video games out there. But there were actually a couple other games (and gaming consoles) that came before that. While there’s a lot more out there that we could talk about when it comes to video games and gaming consoles, we’ve hit some of the highlights for you here.

1985 – Originally formed as a Japanese playing-card company, Nintendo develops and releases the Nintendo Entertainment System in the U.S. Although retailers were skeptical at first, the system became a huge success, built on the backs of games like Super Mario Bros., Metroid and The Legend of Zelda. Stricter licensing policies

1977 – The Atari 2600 (originally named the Atari VCS) is released. Bushnell, who sold Atari to Warner Communications in 1976, realized that a cartridge-based gaming system that allowed for multiple game play on a single console was the way of the future

1962 – Ralph Baer, a German television engineer and his colleagues at Sanders Associates developed the first video game console that worked in conjunction with a standard TV. The console allowed players to engage in a “chase” game in which two players controlled two squares that chased each other on screen. The initial game was updated to include a light gun and by the time the console, called the Brown Box, reached the apex of its develop-

1980 – To combat Atari’s niche in the market, Mattel released the Intellivision which featured slightly better graphics than the Atari 2600 and also included synthesized voices within the games it supported. Third-party game developers like Coleco and Activision showed interest in being a part of the Intellivision and Atari 2600 but had to compete with a huge influx of unlicensed game production and new home systems like ColecoVision, Atari 5200 and Vectrex. The massive amount of competition led to a major video game industry crash in 1983 and 1984, with many of the gaming companies forced to file bankruptcy.

1975 – After realizing that the arcade version of Pong was a huge success, Atari creates a home version of Pong that they sell in Sears store under the label Sears Tele-Games. Pong’s innovative features included a single gaming chip that allowed for an on-screen score of the game as well as sound for when the ball hit the paddle. Atari’s status as a house-hold name in video games has begun.

1961 – Programmer Steve Russell created a game in which two players were competing against each to see who could outlast the other. The game involved each player controlling a small “space” ship that spun around a gravity well in the center of the screen, shooting at each other. The game was called Spacewar! and essentially marks the start of the video game era.

led to higher-quality third-party game development and the system, with its many games and cartridges, began to break sales records and eventually secured the title of the best-selling game console in video game history. 1989 – Nintendo introduces the Game Boy. As the first major handheld came console, the Game Boy and its hit game Tetris set the stage for portable video gaming for the coming years. 1990 – SNK debuts the Neo-Geo. The console was considered years ahead of its time, featuring detailed 2-D graphics that far surpassed its competitors’ graphic capabilities. However, it was a bit costly at $650 for the system and $200 per game. 1991 – Nintendo releases the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Piggy-backing off its previous hits like Super Mario Bros., the SNES introduced games like Donkey Kong Country and surpassed the other comparable gaming consoles at the time to become the best-selling system of its kind in the U.S. 1995 – Sony debuts the PlayStation. It features three-dimensional games and CD-ROM technology which helped bring down the price of games from the cartridge games. Popular game titles included Resident Evil, Gran Turismo, Crash Bandicoot and Metal Gear Sol-

1996 – Nintendo fires back at Sony by releasing the Nintendo 64, which marks the last widely-produced and marketed gaming system to use game cartridges. Although the price point for the cartridge games was higher, the loading time versus that of the CD-ROM games was lower and the cartridges were able to store game play data while CD-ROM systems required a separate memory card. Popular games included The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and GoldenEye 007.

that you should use chemicals as a last resort. Many times there are physical or cultural controls that will do the job before you ever have to reach for the spray bottle. For example using the “squish method” for aphids or yellow sticky traps for white flies can sometimes work better and faster than a spray would. In some instances a chemical may be needed and should be applied carefully, keeping in mind where butterflies and other beneficial insects, such as bees, are feeding.

ATTRACTING BUTTERFLIES TO THE GARDEN

A

ttracting butterflies to your garden can be as easy as 1, 2, and 3. The first thing you should do is to refrain from using pesticides whenever possible. Secondly, plant a variety of host plants for butterflies to lay their eggs and the caterpillars to later feed from. And lastly, plant flowers that provide nectar for the adult butterflies and other beneficial pollinators. The last step is also for you because who doesn’t benefit from a garden full of beautiful flowers! The first step doesn’t necessarily mean that chemicals can never be used, but

NOW OPEN!!

Many host plants may already be planted near or at our homes. Gambel Oak, Cottonwoods, Willows, Chokecherry and Ash are host plants to many butterfly and moth larvae. You can attract more by planting, Dill, Asters, Butterfly Weed, Hollyhock’s, Lupine, Honeysuckle, Violets, and Pansies. A successful butterfly garden provides a habitat for future generations of butterflies as well as the current years. Then by adding nectar sources like Blanketflower, Hyssop, Bee Balm, Penstemon, Evening Primrose, and Zinnias you will be well on your way to a butterfly paradise, not to mention a stunning garden full of beautiful bloomers.

NURTURE W

hat does nurture mean? When you think of a child who needs to be nurtured, you may see a child who is crying, hurt, lost, or in some sort of emotional distress. Many times, people associate nurturing with easing pain. Easing pain is certainly applicable, but is it the only time nurturing is appropriate? What about self-nurturing? In the mainstream public, when the concept of self-nurturing is introduced, many times, people’s thoughts will gravitate towards New Age, hippy, or even selfishness, depending on the person’s belief system. Self-nurturing does not belong TO any of those categories. Self-nurturing is a concept that has been neglected, forgotten, and misunderstood. Self-nurturing is more than treating yourself to a massage or a facial or a nice dinner. Hopefully, caring for the body and enjoying nice meals are the ‘norm’, not the exception. Selfnurturing is about taking a time-out. The time-out can be a simple time to reflect, to offer yourself kind words, to examine false beliefs, to meditate, to respond to underlying emotions and feelings: to heal. Self-nurturing means to offer kindness and compas-

sion to yourself, but the ‘norm’ has been to use the excuse, “there is no time.”

EMPOWERMENT THROUGH HEALING, LLC

When did working and competing become more important than improving the quality of life? Quality of life does not necessarily improve with money, for a wealthy person can be highly depressed and addicted to substances/sugar, just as a middle class or poverty stricken person. When a person chooses to improve his or her quality of life, that person must include self-nurture. Examine what self-nurture means and how it can be implemented. There is time. Everyone has the same 24 hours in a day; it is how those hours are utilized that make the difference. Everyone has choices.

Self-nurturing is a requirement in the healing and growing process because for one to truly heal, that person must live in self-respect and self-integrity. To live with total self-respect means that time has been taken to live a quality life, a life that adds passion and joy, rather than scattered, hurried, and competitive energy.

KEEP YOUR COOL

E

veryone needs to take steps to stay safe in hot weather, but seniors especially need to be careful. Our internal “temperature gauge” doesn’t work the way it used to, and becoming overheated can sneak up on us, with dehydration right on its heels. Here are a few ways to stay cool in summer: • If you have air conditioning, use it. Keep an eye on the heat index (temperature plus humidity) on the weather news. The higher the humidity, the less we’re able to sweat and let air evaporation cool us. • Go somewhere cool in the middle of the day, such as the library or a nearby coffee shop that has air conditioning. Find out from your senior center if there are cooling centers in your area where you can go for a few hours. • Drink plenty of water. Some of our

Partnering for a healthier community!

drugs can be dehydrating; ask your doctor if your prescriptions mean you should drink more water. Ask him how much liquid you should drink during hot weather, especially if your intake is limited because of water retention. Remember that drinks with caffeine (such as tea or coffee) can be dehydrating, as well as alcoholic beverages or sugary drinks like sodas.

Home Care

With over 45 years of healthcare management experience, Amada will provide you with peace of mind in any given situation. Whether it’s post surgical recovery, disability, or illness, our Personal Care Coordinators and professional staff are here for you around the clock to meet your home care needs.

• Dress in lightweight clothing. Wear a hat if you go outside. • Put a cool, damp washcloth on pulse points, like wrist and neck. Take a cool shower. • Sign up with a seniors phone service that will check on you, or arrange with friends and family to stay in close contact during hot weather.

Financial Aid for America’s Veterans

• Keep an eye on the symptoms of heat exhaustion: clammy skin, fainting, nausea, muscle cramps and weakness. Call for help if you experience any of these, because they can lead to heat stroke if not taken care of. Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Write to her in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Long-Term Care Insurance is a valuable tool to protect your family’s assets. If your loved one has purchased a policy, the next step is to understand and strategize how to best utilize the policy.

SEVEN QUICK TRICKS TO “HAVE A GOOD ONE!” Part 1 of 2 By Ron Ross

“Have a good one!” the clerk said to me as I walked toward the door after my purchase. I thought to myself, “Have a good what?” Of course I knew what she was talking about: she wanted me to have a good day. So, how do you go about “having a good one” with all the trials and tribulations of everyday life? Here are seven quick tricks I came up with for myself because I really do want to “have a good one.” Look good. “Having a good one” starts early in the day. I don’t care if the latest fad on TV and the movies is a man with a 3-day beard dressed like a vagrant. Scruffy look, unwashed face, unkempt hair, un-

me to “stand up straight and look people in the eye.” There really is something about good posture and a confident step that makes you stand out from the crowd. Get your hands out of your pockets (it causes you to slouch), don’t fidget with your hands, push your shoulders back, and look like you really are somebody. I’m not talking about boisterous arrogance; I’m talking about quiet confidence.

brushed teeth and sloppy dress means you are having a bad day even before you leave your house. Good grooming is an essential part of communicating confidence to yourself and to others. To look good starts with you face, but it ends with the way you dress. Wear nice clothes, they take just as much effort to put on than ugly ones. I see way to many people go out in public looking like their mother never taught them how to dress. Their shirts are not ironed, their trousers are dirty, their shoes are uncared for, and they look horrible. It makes me want to slap their mother! When you put on nice clean well coordinated clothes you feel better because you know you look better.

A study done by researchers at Ohio State University1. concluded that If you sit up straight in your chair you are much more likelier to think positive thoughts and to believe positive things about yourself. By golly, Mother was right! Yet another way I found to “have a good one” is to talk with good words. Have you noticed an increase in the use of vulgar words in daily language? Some movies are filled with “F-bombs” and crude language

Walk with good posture. Once you step outside the door to face the world, stand up straight and walk with confidence. My mother always reminded my brother and

that contribute little to the story. That use of offensive language has crept into our daily conversation. If I would have use the term “pissed off” in front of my mother she would have washed my mouth out with soap. Now it is a common phrase. When we use positive, encouraging, uplifting words we feel better about ourselves and we have a more positive impact on the people around us. No one ever complimented someone because of their very effective use of vulgar language. And people who use vulgar language very seldom get very far in life. Four more Quick Tricks to Have a Good One next week! You can all Seven Quick Tricks at RonRossToday.com. 1. http://www.sciencedaily.com/ releases/2009/10/091005111627.htm

Individualized treatment for:

It may look just like any other kind of pneumonia, but diarrhea and very high fever are clues that it might be Legionella. Liver problems are more common in Legionella infections, but the dialysis you received likely was due to kidney failure from severe shock and sepsis. Intubation -having a breathing tube inserted into your windpipe -- and paralysis are reserved for only the very most severe pneumonias, and it is really great news that you are recovering so quickly and completely.

KEY SIGNS INDICATE LEGIONELLA BACTERIA

Being young (47) and female are good signs for recovery. Since your blood tests are normal, your kidneys apparently recovered completely. There is no reason not to use the same OTC medications you used before the pneumonia, and an occasional glass of wine is fine (but not too much).

DEAR DR. ROACH: I became extremely sick and was taken to the hospital. My physician thought I had regular pneumonia. I was so dehydrated that they couldn’t find a vein. I was intubated and had trouble getting enough oxygen. I had dialysis. My family was told I probably would not live. They discovered that my illness was Legionella, and with treatment, I woke up from paralysis.

Some scarring after pneumonia is common, and this indeed puts you at somewhat increased risk for future pneumonias. A vaccination for pneumonia will reduce the risk of the most common bacteria. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Why do heart attacks occur mostly in the morning and on Mondays? -- J.V.

My recovery has been easy and fast, although I was told it would take a year at the least. I am finished with physical therapy. My blood work and scan show everything is back to normal. But I have scarring in my lungs. I am a 47-year-old woman. What should I expect for my future? Are my kidneys at risk? Do I have a greater risk of contracting pneumonia in the future? What about my lungs? Is there permanent damage? What about allergy medicines and ibuprofen? I am afraid to have a glass of wine! -- C.K. ANSWER: Legionella is a bacteria that can cause pneumonia. It is classically found in fresh water, such as air-conditioning cooling towers and condensers. It was thought to be the cause of the original outbreak among American Legionnaires back in 1976 in Philadelphia, hence the popular name of Legionnaires’ disease. Once considered rare, increased awareness and better diagnostic tests have led to a greater understanding of this important cause of pneumonia.

ANSWER: Your statements are quite true. Heart attacks are three times more likely in the morning than in the evening, and 15 percent to 20 percent more likely on Mondays than on other days. Nobody knows exactly why. Mornings are thought to be more likely due to several factors: increased blood pressure, an increase in cortisone and having “stickier” platelets in the morning. There are two main theories for the Monday phenomenon -- the first is back-to-work stress, but recently there has been some evidence that it may be excess alcohol intake over the weekend. These are good arguments for stress reduction and avoiding excess alcohol in the first place.

*** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. (c) 2014 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

MOMENTS IN TIME THE HISTORY CHANNEL

• On June 27, 1939, one of the most famous scenes in movie history is filmed -Rhett Butler and Scarlett O’Hara parting in “Gone With the Wind.â€? The scene also was shot using an alternate line, “Frankly, my dear, I just don’t care,â€? in case the film censors objected to the word “damn.â€? The film was approved, but producer David O. Selznick was fined $5,000 for including the curse. • On June 25, 1942, Gen. Dwight Eisenhower becomes commander of all U.S. troops in the European theater of World War II. He would be appointed Supreme Allied Commander of all forces in Europe in 1943. “Ikeâ€? later would become America’s 34th president. • On June 26, 1959, the St. Lawrence Seaway is officially opened, creating a navigational channel from the Atlantic Ocean to all the Great Lakes. The seaway -- made up of a system of canals, locks and dredged waterways -- extends a distance of nearly 2,500 miles, from the Atlantic Ocean to Duluth, Minn.

• On June 24, 1966, the United States Senate passes what will become the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Among the first safety standards adopted were seat belts, impact-absorbing steering columns and standardized bumper heights. • On June 29, 1970, U.S. ground troops end two months of combat operations in Cambodia and return to South Vietnam. News of the crossing into Cambodia set off a wave of antiwar demonstrations, including one at Kent State University in Ohio that resulted in the killing of four students by Army National Guard troops. • On June 23, 1989, the film version of the DC Comics hero Batman is released in theaters. Warner Brothers hyped “Batmanâ€? as a major summer “eventâ€? long before its release. The results were stunning, as the film grossed some $100 million in its first 10 days. • On June 28, 1997, Mike Tyson bites a chunk out of Evander Holyfield’s ear in the third round of their heavyweight rematch. After the fight resumed, Tyson bit Holyfield’s other ear. With 10 seconds left in the third round, Tyson was disqualified from the match and suspended from boxing. (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

• It was American writer and philosopher Elbert Hubbard who made the following sage observation: “Many a man’s reputation would not know his character if they met on the street.” • You probably know that the king cobra is one of the deadliest snakes: It can grow up to 18 feet long and is very aggressive, often attacking with little or no provocation. When it rears up to attack, the head can be 4 or 5 feet off the ground, and king cobra’s venom is so deadly that a single bite can kill an elephant. You might not realize, though, that these snakes are protective parents. Both the female and the male stay close to the nest, guarding the eggs from any danger. • Those who study such things can tell your age, race and gender just by examining one of your hairs.

• Did you ever wonder how the lollipop got its name? A man named George Smith first put the hard treat on the end of a stick, but candy-making wasn’t his only interest. It seems that Smith also had a keen interest in horse racing, and he named the candy after a popular racehorse of the time, Lolly Pop. • If you took the entire surface area of the dwarf planet Pluto and laid it flat, it would fit inside Russia. • The next time you get caught outside in a hard rain, you can reflect on the fact that each drop that hits you is traveling at about 20 mph. *** Thought for the Day: “All truth passes through three stages. THE LAW ACCORDING TO STEVENS by Lisa Welch Stevens, Attorney at Law P.C.

YOU’RE BUYING – OR SELLING – A HOUSE: WHAT IF THERE IS NO REALTOR INVOLVED? © May, 2014 by Lisa Welch Stevens, Attorney at Law P.C.

F

irst, I want to say that I highly recommend using a real estate agent or broker when looking to buy or sell a home. It is the absolute best way to market your home if you don’t have a buyer already lined up, and to provide you with access to the largest number of possible homes for purchase if you don’t already have a home identified for purchase. The real estate agents and brokers are the professionals, they know the market, and they have the tools and the expertise. For example, even though I am an attorney, I have always used a real estate agent or broker in my home purchases and sales. I do not have time to deal with the marketing, showing, winnowing, etc. That being said, the commissions to be paid to a real estate agent or broker can be expensive, depending upon the sale/purchase price and the percentage charged. This is worth every penny if

magine a situation in which an ant finds itself at the end of a long day of work. It’s not easy being the eight legged insect. Ants have been lauded for their hard work, organization, and ability to adapt to nearly any environment. In fact, ants colonize every single continent except for Antarctica. This is a testament to their survival skills. So, suffice to say, if you were an ant winding down your evening, you’d probably want to get some rest for the next day. But what if you encountered an evil 8-year old human trying to melt you under his microscope? You could simply run and hide. Go back to your colony and wait it out. The kid’s got to be called in for dinner eventually. The other option is to stand and wage war

you need someone to market and show your home, or to winnow down the possibilities, or to give you access to the most possible homes. But what if you don’t need to market your home, because you have a buyer already lined up, such as a relative or friend? What if you have already picked out the home you want to buy, because it was a “for sale by owner” and you fell in love with it? The problem is you still need someone who knows what they are doing to draft up all of the legal agreements to make the transaction happen, and who knows what legal agreements are needed. The title company can handle the closing and provide the government required closing documents, but by law they cannot draft the purchase or sale agreements, or the deeds. If the transaction is financed in part, the lender provides the note, deed of trust, and security agreements, but again, by law the lender cannot provide the purchase or sale agreement, or the deed. If the seller or buyer is a trust, or a corporation or company, additional documents are needed. It is true that one can obtain the State of Colorado approved real estate forms that realtors use, but you may not know which forms you need to use, or how to complete them. If a third party lender is not financing the purchase, but the seller is going to carry the note, attorneys can draft the promissory notes, deeds of trust, and security agreements. In Colorado, because the law no longer

requires attorneys to be involved in real estate transactions, so long as licensed real estate agents or brokers are using the State approved forms, people often don’t think of retaining an attorney to prepare the transaction documents for them, or to review documents they have received from the other party to the transaction. Not only is this an option, it is often far less expensive than hiring a real estate agent or broker to handle just this transaction, but still paying them the full, customary commission. In the majority of states, attorneys are required for real estate transactions. In Colorado they are not, but may be necessary in a particular situation such as those described above. Even at an hourly rate, the legal fee is often quite lower than what the commission payment to a real estate agent or broker

nied Washington a trademark for the Redskins name, calling it “disparaging to Native American families”.

Which is what the Washington Redskins and their owner Dan Snyder are doing right now. Over the past three or so years, the “skins” have been under heavier scrutiny than ever before about their name.

But it’s not that cut and dry. In a poll conducted by USA Today just last year, 79% of Americans felt the team should keep its name. Even with the press weighing down heavier on the franchise, the same poll brought even better results for the Redskins’ name as that number jumped to 83% in 2014.

If you don’t know who I’m talking about, let me quickly explain. The Redskins are a professional football team based out of our nation’s capital. As a part of the NFL the Washington franchise has won 3 Super Bowl Championships, 13 Division Titles, and 6 Conference Championships. They were one of the most notable franchises in NFL history through the early 1990’s. Since then, they’ve been mostly irrelevant. Until recently that is, when the media and seemingly society took a major stance against their name. Now, suddenly they’re as relevant as they’ve ever been for all the wrong reasons. The name “Redskins” is controversial in the Native American community. It’s one of those things that went largely un-talked about for a long time; but everyone knew it was there. Last year when Bob Costas famously called the name “An insult, a slur” on Sunday Night Football, the war for Washington’s team identity was on the brink. Last week, the U.S. Patent Office de-

It’s easy to dismiss these polls and claim that the numbers rank so high because Native Americans stand as a minority and other races wouldn’t be offended. But that’s not really what’s happening. In fact, in polls taken asking self-identifying Native Americans if they were offended by the name “Redskins” a whopping 90% said no. That’s quite a high number. So what gives? The fact is that the media is so obsessed with political correctness in this era, that they’ll attack anyone and everyone who might be offending someone. Are a couple of people offended by the name? Absolutely. But that doesn’t give Snyder or Washington fans a good reason to change it. Some people are offended by the personal beliefs of Chik-fil-a’s outspoken owner, so they simply don’t eat there. It would be ridiculous to expect the fast-food chain to close down because some people don’t agree with

would be. Again, I am not recommending against using real estate agents or brokers – as I stated, I myself have always used them in every real estate transaction I have been involved in, even though I can (and do, for clients) draft the legal documents myself. But if the wonderful additional services they provided are not necessary, using an attorney can be a less expensive option. Please consult your own legal advisor regarding the facts and circumstances of your particular situation. For additional information contact, Lisa Welch Stevens, Attorney at Law P.C. 719.488.9395 the owner. The Redskins’ name is part of Washington’s tradition. Many fans grew up with that name and logo defining their fandom. Whether or not we change the name, it will still be written all of the history books and repeated through time. Not to mention the overwhelming issue of surrendering to media pressure. We teach our children all the time not to succumb to peer pressure. What message are we sending if a giant organization like the Redskins had to change its entire image because 90% of the media want them to? But none of that matters. We know who holds the power these days. It says here that the Redskins will change their name before the kickoff of the 2016 season, of not sooner. Dan Snyder can fight as hard as he pleases, but the metaphorical microscope will slowly melt away his ambitions. He’s just a little bug in this big, big human-world. The war has been lost. And it’s probably for the better. I’m sick of reading and hearing about it; I’m sick of writing about it.
