y now, baseball season is in full swing . . . pun intended. Fans have flocked to the stadiums around the country to cheer on their favorite teams. And maybe you’re one of those fans. Maybe you’ve found the joy in sitting on a hard seat, the sun in your eyes and the smell of hotdogs grilling from the vendors all around you. Perhaps that cute little girl sitting behind you kept kicking your seat but you were too wrapped up in the excitement of the game to really care. WRIGLEY FIELD

for more than just the Boston Red Sox? In 1914 and 1915, the Boston Braves also called the ballpark home, although the Red Sox started out there in 1912.

The park was actually built for the Red Sox, who started out in 1901 as the Americans.

The Chicago Cubs have played out of Wrigley Field since 1916. The stadium was actually built for the Chicago Whales to play from. The Whales, a professional baseball team as well, was part of the Federal League, a third Major League that was short-lived. After two seasons, the Federal League was disbanded and all the teams that played in it were as well. Wrigley Field stands as the only stadium originally built for a Federal League team to be in use today.

The American League team played out of a poorly constructed, 11,000-seat ballpark called the Hunting Avenue Grounds for ten years before thenowner John Taylor decided they needed more suitable digs. Construction on Fenway Park began in September 1911 and was finished so quickly that the Red Sox were able to play their first game against the New York Highlanders (eventually to become the Yankees) at the park April 20, 1912.

The old Yankee Stadium had a quirk to it that wasn’t replicated when it was rebuilt in 2009 . . . and with good reason.

The stadium actually had monuments on the field, which players had to work around in order to play the game.

Imagine being a visiting team, having to fight for positions with a monument on the field in order to catch a fly ball.

Yankee Stadium, well the old Yankee Stadium was the home of the New York Yankees for over 80 years before the team’s new Yankee Stadium was built in 2009. When the first stadium was built in 1923, it was the largest and most spectacular stadium of its time.

At the opening game of the old Yankee Stadium, Babe Ruth hit a home run and from then on, the park was dubbed “The House That Ruth Built.”

Aside from the Green Monster, Fenway Park is home to another interestingly-named feature: Pesky’s Pole. The pole, on the right side of the field, was named as such because Red Sox player Johnny Pesky, a left-handed hitter, hooked a home run around the pole to

The famous “Green Monster,” the nickname for the 37-foot, two-inch left field wall at Fenway Park, was technically constructed when the stadium was built, but wasn’t painted green until 1947.

Besides its former status as a Federal League stadium, Wrigley Field also has another notable quality: the ivy covering the walls. In fact, that ivy is so unique to the stadium that it has its own ground rule: any ball caught in the ivy is a ground rule double. How many other stadiums can say that? None, actually.

At the current Yankee Stadium, lefthanded hitters have a bit of a homerun advantage. There are just 318 feet down the right field line so hitters have an easier time getting a home run down that line.

COORS FIELD It may not be the iconic stadium that either Fenway Park or Yankees Stadium is, Coors Field in Denver is home to our very own Colorado Rockies. And when it first opened, many visiting teams loved the stadium the way we Coloradans do, too.

The reason? The ball traveled so well in the thin air that the stadium became known as a hitters’ park. To battle this phenomenon, the Rockies installed a humidor room in which the baseballs are kept that will be used during the games. The humidor keeps the balls from traveling so far.

Coors Field is also about 21 feet below the city. Walking into the stadium, there are seats both above and below you. Its low profile and old-fashioned brick construction allow it to blend into the downtown Denver area well.

Now in order to get rid of aphids I find that it is incredibly helpful to do anything you can to knock the numbers down a little before applying a product or releasing ladybugs. I do this either by using my “squish” method, or by using hard spray of water. Product choices are endless and depend on what they are feeding on. For example, if they are feeding on vegetables or fruit

trees you might want to use an organic spray or release ladybugs to make a feast out of your infestation.

One Ladybug can eat up to 5000 aphids in its lifetime! On the other hand if you have a heavy infestation on some very tall trees a systemic that works by going up through the plant might be necessary.

ook at me when I’m talking to you! How many times do we hear that growing up? We also hear, “pay attention to the food in front of you”, “look where you’re going”, “pay attention to what you’re doing” and so forth. My point is this: most children are taught to pay attention to physical things. “Don’t walk into furniture” and “pay attention to how much food you’re putting on your plate” are common statements.

There is nothing wrong with being aware of our physical surroundings; we need to so that we don’t walk into walls! But what if children were taught something else, too?

What if children were taught to look at energy? What if we were to simply ask our children, when they’re very young, “do you see energy there? Do you see those colors?” From early on most children can see energy, but as they grow older, they are programmed to pay attention to the physical world and they forget they could ever see energy. The light receptors in the eyes become programmed to recognize physical objects and people. In some cases, children with very strong

abilities to see and feel energy keep their light receptors consciously responsive to energy. Hopefully, those children are in families that recognize that and honor the child’s abilities.

NEGATIVE SOCIAL INTERACTIONS

H

ealth Psychology journal recently published a study update that looked at the role of negative social interactions in hypertension. Negative interactions? By that, the authors meant “exchanges or behaviors that involve excessive demands, criticism, disappointment or other unpleasantness.”

In the course of the study, they asked questions about each of four social areas (partner, children, other family, friends), such as, “How much can you rely on them?” or “Do they really understand how you feel?”

Besides age, sex, alcohol intake, tobacco use, physical activity, psychological well-being and other variables, researchers looked at the number of volunteer hours each participant did on a yearly basis. (I found that a bit curious.)

Here are the results: • There was an increased likelihood of

developing hypertension because of negative social interactions with friends and family (not children or partner), but no increase because of negative interactions with children or partner.

• Women were more likely to develop hypertension due to negative social interactions with friends. One very interesting conclusion was that women have greater expectations of social relationships, and that “women demonstrated greater disapproval of behavior that violated friendship rules,” leading to greater distress when the “rules” aren’t followed.

• Those over age 65 were less likely to develop hypertension due to negative interactions, but those ages 51 to 64 were more likely. By age 65, it’s thought that we adapt and see negative interactions as less problematic, and that we have better coping strategies.

The 51 to 64 group is the “sandwich” generation, responsible for both their children and parents, and therefore more likely to be under more stress.

• Those who volunteer at least 200 hours per year were less likely to develop hypertension, even with negative social interactions in their lives.

I learned this many years ago when I started selling advertising which required me to walk into a business and ask to talk to the owner. It didn’t take me long to discover that a friendly smile opened more doors than a dour, “May I

Work with purpose. The average person will spend 100,000 hours of their lives at work. Not all of those hours will be spent doing fun and exciting stuff. I guess that is why they call it work. If you have a sense of vocation, that your work helps others, provides a useful service, is more than an income, you will be able to get through the humdrum parts of your job with ease. Work with a sense of meaning and purpose in life, our work becomes easier, no matter how hard it is.

Type 2 diabetes is caused by resistance to insulin. Most Type 2 diabetics have normal or even high levels of insulin. Insulin helps bring sugar from the blood into cells, but it also acts as a growth hormone. That’s one of the reasons Type 2 diabetics have trouble losing weight, since the high insulin levels promote fat deposition. Type 2 diabetes is more common in adults, but as North Americans continue to have increasing rates of obesity, Type 2 diabetes is showing up at younger and younger ages.

CAREFUL DIET VITAL FOR ALL DIABETICS DEAR DR. ROACH: Can you tell me why there is so much emphasis on small portions for diabetics or prediabetics? If you are watching carbs and are extremely underweight, is there still a reason to limit portion sizes? -- C. ANSWER: The majority of people in North America with diabetes and prediabetes are overweight or obese, so limiting portion size makes sense for most people.

However, for the minority of people with diabetes or prediabetes with normal or below-normal weight, portion size no longer has the importance it does in overweight people.

A careful diet is important for everyone with diabetes. I would be cautious about the term “carbs,” since there are several different types of carbohydrates. Simple sugars and starches are the problem for diabetics, since they are rapidly converted to blood sugar. However, fruits, vegetables and whole grains are much more slowly turned into blood sugar, and along with high-quality protein and healthy fat, form the basis of a healthy diet for everybody -diabetics and non-diabetics alike.

Being underweight with diabetes should raise the possibility of Type 1 diabetes, which is caused by autoimmune destruction of the cells in the pancreas that make insulin. Type 1 diabetics have no or almost no insulin, and absolutely need insulin by injection. Most people with Type 1 are children or adolescents, but it can happen

The situation is even more complex than I have made it here. There are people with elements of both Type 1 and 2 diabetes, and even rarer types. I believe Type 1 diabetics should be managed by an endocrinologist.

Sophisticated blood tests, including insulin, C-peptide and insulin antibodies, occasionally are necessary to sort out what kind of diabetes is present.

ith the ever-increasing number of scams and ID thefts, a periodic review of how we protect ourselves is a good idea. A recent issue of the FDIC Consumer News outlines 10 ways to guard our personal information and money.

1) If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Whether it’s a great job, business opportunity or lottery winnings, beware ... especially if you’re pressured to make a decision quickly or to send funds in advance.

2) Look out for scams that offer to send you checks that you’ll deposit into your own account, take out your portion and then send them the bal-

3) Be suspicious of unsolicited emails or text messages that ask you to click a link or open an attachment. Your computer, and the private information on it, could be at risk.

4) Don’t give out personal information unless you’re the one who’s initiated the contact. Anyone can call you or send email and pretend to be your bank or the Social Security office asking for information.

5) Choose your user IDs and passwords carefully. Use upper- and lowercase letters, numbers and symbols, and change them often.

6) Be careful on social network sites.

Scammers use those to gather information, such as your pet’s name and mother’s maiden name, to figure out your passwords. They also may pretend to be a friend to convince you to send money.

7) Review your transactions on a regular basis. Check bank statements and credit-card bills as soon as they

The ratings, in fact, competed with that of last month’s NBA Finals and NHL Stanley Cup matches. Though the USA lost the game to Germany, they still advanced to the Knockout round of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in somewhat of an upset. The US Team was said to be in “The Group of Death” and given little chance by experts and commentators to make it into the tournament of 16. But they pulled it off, as Facebook and Twitter went wild. American sports fans universally rejoiced.
