ummer is upon us and the heat is settling in. With simmering days and balmy nights, we’re all opting for a less “buttoned-up” option when it comes to our clothing choices. And with the tank tops, shorts, sandals and sometimes just a bathing suit as the only clothing we’re putting on during the day, our skin is exposed to more of the harmful elements. Whether it’s sun exposure, pollution or a whole day spent digging in the garden kicking up dirt, our skin really takes a beating when we’re outside so much more. Snippetz decided to uncover some information about skin care so you can keep your skin healthy this summer.

Many people forget that they have skin on their heads. Even if you have a thick full head of hair, your scalp can still get burned. If possible, the best bet is to wear a hat or scarf to cover that sensitive skin. Wide-brimmed hats can provide additional sun protection for your face and neck, too. But sometimes a hat isn’t a possibility and in that event, experts say to make sure to apply sunscreen to your part and any other areas where you skin may be exposed on your head. Spray sunscreen makes application easy and your scalp will definitely thank you for it!

Skin care experts agree that the climate in higher altitudes like those in Colorado can wreak havoc on skin. Thin air and exposure to higher amounts of ultraviolet light mean we Coloradans have to be extra vigilant in taking proactive steps to keeping our skin healthy. A major step in doing this is applying sunscreen almost religiously. Using a sunscreen that protects against both Ultraviolet A (UVA) and Ultraviolet B (UVB) rays is key, experts say. UVA rays age the skin, causing sunspots and wrinkles, while UVB rays cause those nasty sunburns. Your best bet is to apply sunscreen every two to three hours. Some experts even recommend applying sunscreen before getting dressed, while you’re in the buff. This way, you ensure that you get every nook and cranny that could be exposed to the sun during your day.
moisturizers is that they add moisture to your skin and that’s just not the case. They actually aid in holding in the moisture that’s already there. Experts recommend that you apply a moisturizer no more than three minutes after your shower so you lock in the hydration you’ve achieved in the shower and don’t let it evaporate into our thin Colorado air. While you’re at it, why not apply your sunscreen, too? (Hint, hint). We’ve all probably heard the rule that we need to drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water every day. But that might be enough. If you drink caffeinated beverages, you need to drink about three times that amount. A good way to keep track of your water intake is to keep a water bottle with you and label certain times on the outside of the water bottle. Doing so helps you see how much water you need to drink by the times marked on the bottle.
HYDRATE Hydration is key to keeping your skin healthy and there are two ways to achieve this: hydrate your skin through moisturizers, masques or toners; and drink water like it’s going out of style.
You can achieve higher levels of hydration by eating things like cantaloupe. This melon is full of beneficial
Moisturizers are a necessity in our dry climate, both on your face and your entire body. Finding one that works for you skin may take a bit of time, but it’s essential to keeping your skin healthy. One myth about
The recommendation is to use a sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, although there is debate about how much more effective anything above 30 really is. As long as you’re conscientious about putting sunscreen on every day and reapplying to prevent a burn, SPF 30 should suffice. If you’ve never gotten a sunburn on your lips, consider yourself lucky. Many people overlook their lips when it comes to sunscreen application, which is why many lipsticks and chapsticks have opted to include SPF properties in their formulas. Not only will a lipstick, balm or chapstick with SPF help prevent a painful sunburn, they can help keep your kips hydrated, an extremely important element to battling our Colorado climate.

has that tell-tale pink glow indicating a burn, start applying the gel. And as with sunscreen, apply and reapply to help your skin absorb the gel and speed up the healing process. Doing so can often help you avoid that nasty peeling stage and reduce redness and inflammation.
Other hydrating foods include cucumber, celery, radishes, tomatoes, watermelon and strawberries, just to name a few.

SOOTHE THAT SUNBURN
Just one blistering sunburn can double your risk of developing melanoma. Even if you’re the world’s greatest sunscreen user and you wear hats and long sleeve shirts and pants all summer long, all it takes is one bad burn to set stage for skin cancer. Getting yearly skin exams by a doctor and performing monthly self-exams can help pick out early warning signs of potentially dangerous growths, moles or spots on your skin.
It’s pretty much inevitable that you’ll end up with a sunscreen at some point in time or another. And when that happens, it may seem like there’s not much you can do to bring your skin back to a state of health. Quite the opposite, actually. Aloe vera gels and balms can provide a massive amount of relief and actually help your skin repair itself. Experts agree that when selecting an after-sun gel or lotion, choosing one with aloe vera as one of the first ingredients is essential. Also, steer clear of gels boasting any type of alcohol as an ingredient; alcohol will dry your skin out and can also be painful to a severe sunburn. As soon as you notice that your skin

some potentially fatal. The best thing to do is to stay indoors when insects are at their peak levels of activity, but that’s not always feasible. Using an insect repellent that contains DEET is an effective method to warding off those nasty bugs.
DON’T FORGET THE BUGS! This time of year, mosquitoes and other pests are out in full force, especially at dawn and dusk. Bug bites are a nuisance to the skin, leaving welts and bumps that can itch like crazy. But insects can also carry diseases,
However, there are concerns that high levels of DEET can have a toxic effect, especially on children. Many retailers sell insect-repellent bracelets or fans that you can clip to your belt
loop to achieve the same effect without having to apply anything to your skin. Other options include using citronella candles or planting insect-repelling plants like catnip, marigolds or horsemint to make your outdoor entertaining areas more livable during the summer months and help you deter any bugs that wants to make a snack out of you.

A hummingbird’s beak is shaped perfectly for slender tubular flowers, but can enjoy nectar from a variety of flower shapes. And while there is no doubt that a hummingbird’s favorite color is red there are plenty of blues, purples, yellows and pink that they will flock towards. Any of the red Penstemon seem like they were actually grown just to feed hummingbirds so they are a great choice for a hummingbird garden.
ers like Hyssup, Salvia, Daylily, Russian Sage, Red Feathers, Honeysuckle, Columbine, Hollyhocks and Bee Balm are just a handful of additions that hummingbirds find irresistible.

TRANSMITTERS OF LIFE
W
hen we have experiences, especially in childhood, it creates imprints or reactions in our mind. Our mind remembers everything. It is simply that our mind may place certain events in the subconscious rather than the conscious mind. Our mind becomes programmed, on a conscious or subconscious level, to continue to experience what was already experienced in childhood. For example, if a child experienced much unconditional love, nurturing, bonding, freedom of expression, and joy, then that child would naturally expect those energies to continue. That is because those loving and nurturing experiences created an imprint or transmitters in the brain and mind to expect the same to continue. However, what if a child experienced loss, lack of bonding, abuse, anger, addiction, or severe punishment? Then that child would also expect that type of energy to continue. Those experiences create certain transmitters in the brain that keep those energies/experiences in place consciously or subconsciously. Then the person makes choices to keep anger, addiction, punishment, and lack of bonding in place. The person continues to experience pain.
Another scenario is a child who did not have a particularly painful childhood, but perhaps the child did not really bond with his or her parents. Maybe the child experienced punishment (judgmental) rather than consequences (non-judgmental) and developed beliefs that life is just one pathway and is not full of passion and joy. The person also created transmitters in the brain and mind that continue that cycle. The person may find him or herself making choices to stay ‘in the box’ rather than take risks. The person may experience fear of life and fear of financial survival. A Tai Yi treatment titled Transmitters of Life can assist with this. This treatment is for clearing of transmitters. When a person had an unhappy childhood, it programs the transmitters and sends signals to keep the pain intact. Some transmitters carry fear, anger, and death. This assists in clearing the program so the transmitters are sending correct (that life can be full of joy) information. It also increases messages from the mind to the brain more clearly and from higher mind back to the mind field. The person can expect to feel more clarity on how to make different choices that will create a sense of peace and joy. The person can also expect to feel lighter and more focused on what he or she wants to do in life.

THE BEEF MASTER
I
was watching a morning news show and saw a fascinating interview with Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher and cattle rancher Nolan Ryan about his new cookbook, “The Nolan Ryan Beef and Barbecue Cookbook: Recipes From a Texas Kitchen.” Footage of Ryan with his family on one of his cattle ranches provided a different perspective of a man that many people know only from his legendary baseball career. Ryan has loved raising cattle since he was a child. He first got into the cattle business in a roundabout way. He started visiting ranches in South Texas because he was interested in deer hunting. He ended up spending a lot of time driving around looking at the cattle in the pastures and decided to go into the cattle business. Now, Ryan provides his tender Nolan Ryan All-Natural Beef to Kroger stores, suppliers and restaurants around the country.

“I have high standards when it comes to steaks!” Ryan says. “After years of trying to find a consistent steak, I finally decided the only way I could guarantee beef that’s good every time was to start my own brand. I gathered several ranching friends and enlisted some of the top meat scientists and beef marketing people in the world. Together, we developed a program to provide guaranteed tender, all-natural beef that would always be tender, tasty

and a great value for families.” I’ve never cooked with beef products that were even close to the quality of Ryan’s All-Natural Beef. While there are many definitions of “all-natural,” his beef goes beyond even the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s definition of “minimally processed with no additives or preservatives.” The company uses the most wholesome ingredients from cattle raised in a stress-free environment. The science says that happy cattle produce a great product. It turns out that stress is the single biggest cause of tough steaks. Ryan and the other cattle owners who provide beef for his company treat their animals in a humane way that ensures a safe, pure and healthy product. To develop the cookbook, Ryan and his team worked with Cristobal Vazquez -executive chef at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, Texas, and Nolan’s personal chef -- to produce a practical and inspiring recipe collection that will allow you to prepare delicious beef. One of my favorite recipes in Ryan’s cookbook is the Easy T-Bone with Soy and Pineapple Marinade. It’s the perfect recipe for a holiday celebration or a casual family dinner.

EASY T-BONE WITH SOY AND PINEAPPLE MARINADE This recipe for marinated and grilled T-Bone steaks was a winner with my family! It showcased the full flavors and tenderness of Ryan’s beef perfectly!
basting with reserved marinade and turning steaks with tongs several times. Use tongs rather than a fork to juices sealed in. 4. Remove steaks from grill. Let rest for 5-10 minutes. (During grilling, juices are forced to center of the steak, so if you dig in right away, the juices will puddle on your plate. Resting gives the juices a chance to re-distribute through the meat for a juicier steak.)

WHY JOIN AARP?
A
t some point in our lives, we will get an invitation to join AARP, the organization for seniors. This likely will coincide with our 50th birthday, a point many of us don’t want to acknowledge. The AARP mail is ignored, maybe for a week, maybe for 10 years. But at some point we concede: We are seniors. And we need AARP. I’ve been taking a closer look at AARP recently, and have concluded that it’s worth joining. Here are a few of the benefits of membership: • Need help with estate planning, starting a business or your taxes? It’s there, as close as your computer. Want good information on local political issues that affect seniors in your state. It’s there. AARP is in our corner, with one of the strongest lobby efforts in Washington, D.C.
• While AARP is nonprofit, there are two side branches that are for-profit. AARP Services provides discounts on many of the things we need, such as travel, legal, entertainment and supplemental health insurance. AARP Foundation provides on-the-job training, education, legal help and much more.
Home Care
With over 45 years of healthcare management experience, Amada will provide you with peace of mind in any given situation. Whether it’s post surgical recovery, disability, or illness, our Personal Care Coordinators and professional staff are here for you around the clock to meet your home care needs.
• The AARP Driver Safety program can be taken either online or in a class setting. The biggest value is that it teaches about the changes that come with age and how those can affect driving. • The bi-monthly magazine is worth the price of the membership alone ($16 per year). What I appreciate most is that the articles are straightforward, informative and not condescending. With membership you also can read them online.
Financial Aid for America’s Veterans
If you have access to a computer, look around the site at aarp.com. Check the member-benefits guide, even if you’re already a member, or ask for one by phone when you sign up: 1-888-6872277. Be sure you’re not missing out on anything - especially your discounts! ACQUIRE CONFIDENCE PART 1: HOW CONFIDENT ARE YOU?
H
By Ron Ross
ow confident are you? It makes a difference, you know. The measure of your self-confidence is revealed in a variety of ways: your voice, the language you use, your body language, your grooming and much more. Self-confident people have a natural magnetism about them. They can be identified almost immediately when they enter a room. They walk with buoyancy, stand with dignity, speak with conviction, and love with passion. They know where they’ve been, where they’re going, and why. They believe they are able to solve problems, overcome obstacles,
www.AmadaSeniorCare.com/ColoradoSprings and achieve goals.
The word “confidence” comes from two Latin words, conducere from which we get the word “conduct” and fidere which means “to trust”, the same word from which we get the words fidelity and faithfulness. So to have confidence means to “conduct or behave in a trustworthy or faithful manor”.
Self-confident people inspire trust and gain the support and loyalty of their family, friends, bosses, clients and even strangers. You want to be that kind of person; so do I.
There are two extremes of confidence. One extreme is mistrust and self-doubt where you have no confidence in your ability to do anything; the other extreme is arrogant self-conceit where you think you are much better than you really are.
But what is confidence? Is it swagger, hubris, or arrogance? Is the ability to prance around a room like a show horse on steroids? Certainly not. Just the opposite. The simplest definition of confidence is “full trust”. True confidence is full-trust in oneself and one’s strength, abilities, intelligence, and good judgment. One writer calls confidence “undisturbed calm”.
True confidence stands squarely between the two extremes. A confident person has a realistic view of his skills based on knowledge and experience. He is neither arrogant nor self-effacing. He does not have to be belligerent to get his
8
way nor must he be so timid that he is little more than a doormat. Balanced self-confidence is what you want and you can have it. Self-confidence can be learned. No matter how uncertain or insecure you feel right now you can build the kind of confidence you desire. Check back here each week for another injection of confidence building thoughts and ideas and you will learn how you can Acquire Confidence! You can read all of Dr. Ross’ columns by visiting RonRossToday.com. Individualized treatment for:
Even though you are quite tall, 230 pounds is a lot for your spine to support. You have a BMI of 28, which is in the “overweight” range. Losing even five or 10 pounds may help relieve pain on your back. And certainly listen to your body, and get up and be active. Stretching, including yoga and tai chi, can be a very effective treatment.
NOT ALL BACK PAIN IMPROVES WITH REST DEAR DR. ROACH: I have had lowerback problems almost all my life. Many doctors and therapists have examined it, with almost no success. Recently my attacks have been fewer and milder, even if the bed is not quite right. I can live with it, but a new wrinkle has emerged: If I don’t get out of bed as soon as the alarm sounds, I’ll have back pain and little mobility all day and partial incapacity. I am 74 years old, 6 feet, 4 inches tall and weigh 230 pounds. Do you have any idea what causes this, and if there is any cure? -- J.S.B. ANSWER: There are dozens of causes of back pain, and it can be impossible, even with the most advanced diagnostic tests, to make a precise diagnosis of the underlying cause. In your case, it sounds like you have had one problem for a long time and now something is causing a different kind of back problem. Back pain that gets worse with bed rest and better with exercise is not likely to be a herniated disc or spinal stenosis -- two serious causes of back pain. I am guessing that there is a component of osteoarthritis in your back now, which would be quite common in a 74year-old man. Osteoarthritis does tend to get worse with rest and better with exercise. I am impressed by how acutely it gets worse, and it’s entirely possible that there may be some muscular spasm associated with your back pain.
The arthritis booklet discusses joint pain found in osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 301W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My gallbladder was removed 16 years ago, and I have been having frequent diarrhea for those 16 years! I understand it’s because without the gallbladder, there’s no bile. It seems to me that with all the brilliant researchers in the world, someone could come up with a substitute for bile. A pill, maybe? I am an 85-year-old female and have seen at least four gastroenterologists during this time, and none of them had a clue. The last one I saw told me to “live with it.” Has anyone asked you about this problem? -- D.E. ANSWER: It’s not uncommon at all. Also, the liver still makes bile, and some experts think that it is too much bile that causes diarrhea. If occasional Imodium isn’t doing the job, I have had good success with cholestyramine, which binds excess bile salts. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. (c) 2014 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

• On July 9, 1777, New York elects Brig. Gen. George Clinton as the first governor of the independent state of New York. Clinton’s career was marked by his hatred of British loyalists, called Tories. He kept the public’s tax burden low by confiscating and selling land belonging to Tories to maintain state coffers. • On July 7, 1865, Mary Surratt is executed for her role as a conspirator in Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. Surratt’s boardinghouse, a few blocks from Ford’s Theatre, where Lincoln was murdered, served as the place where a group of Confederate supporters conspired to assassinate the president. • On July 8, 1898, notorious con man “Soapyâ€? In addition, the flooding caused fires and explosions in refinery oil tanks on the banks of the Kansas River. • On July 11, 1960, novelty song “Alley Oopâ€? tops the Billboard pop chart. Hazelwood, who was found guilty of negligence for his role in the massive oil spill in Prince William Sound in 1989, successfully argued that he was entitled to immunity from prosecution because he had reported the oil spill to authorities 20 minutes after the ship ran aground. FLASH BACK 1. “Wear Your Love Like Heaven,” by Donovan in 1967. Many still talk on message boards about the song’s meaning. 2. The Eagles, in 1975. It’s one of the few Eagles songs written in 3/4 waltz time. 3. “Bread and Butter,” by the Newbeats in 1964. 4. Stevie Wonder. STAGING YOUR HOME FOR A FASTER SALE
I
f you’re ready to sell your home, you have lots of competition. Staging can go a long way toward making your home stand out, resulting in a faster sale at the price you want. Before you put your home on the market, ask your real-estate agent for suggestions. Your agent can advise you about local trends and preferences -- and your competition. Incorporate as many of the agent’s suggestions as you can. Give serious consideration to hiring a professional stager, despite the cost. According to a study by the Real Estate Staging Association, homes that were staged before being put up for

ast week, we discussed a few reasons holding Football (Soccer) back from being a genuinely popular spectator sport in America. I already eliminated likeability as a factor. With the World Cup games pulling in television ratings that can compete with other major league playoff games, it seems silly to say American’s don’t like Soccer. The issues at hand seem to have more to do with money. The first being that team owners in the MLS are unwilling to outspend the English Premier League in Europe for marquee players. The next issue has to do with television money. With almost no time for advertise-
sale spent 87 percent less time on the market. Unstaged homes stayed on the market an average 166 days. After staging, those homes received offers within an average 32 days. Homes that were staged before being marketed received their first offer within 26 days. Quicker sales were true across all price ranges.

• Declutter. Professional stagers will often remove as much as half of the furniture in a home to make it look bigger. Pay special attention to crammed closets. • If you have a junk room, give it a role as a specific space, such as a reading nook or yoga area. • Add lighting. You want 100 watts for each 50 square feet, using a variety of types of lighting. • Paint adjacent rooms, such as dining and living rooms, the same neutral color to add more visual space. Other staging websites suggest: • Take down anything personal on the

gave the league a brief stint of star power, but it didn’t last long enough, or produce any real results. Soccer will always struggle to stand up to the entertainment value of the “Big Four” American sports leagues. Unless they finds a way to change the flow of the game. It sounds evil, but the only way to sell Soccer to the people, is to sell out the sport itself. If they can force in more timeouts, they can sell more ads. If they can sell more ads, they can buy better players. The rest will fall into place. Of course, real fans of the sport would be horrified. But the MLS would open itself to millions of sports fans who never even knew they existed. Of course that will never happen. Soccer will continue to be like the Olympics; something we as a country get behind every four years. So in that spirit, enjoy the rest of the World Cup. Sure, we’re not going to win it all, but in all likelihood it’s the last bit of Soccer you’ll watch until 2018. So kick back and take it all in.
