ave you ever watched a fantastic movie in which the actors played their roles so marvelously that you couldn’t imagine anyone else as that character? It’s true that some roles aren’t for everyone. Not everyone could pull off the eccentricities necessary to effectively portray Jack Sparrow in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies as Johnny Depp did.

And not everyone could pull off the intensity with which Mel Gibson infused the role of William Wallace in “Braveheart.” But have you ever wondered what roles famous actors have turned down? “Life is like a box of chocolates” has been uttered so many times, kids who have never seen the movie can quote it perfectly. But can you imagine what the movie would have been like without Tom Hanks’ Oscar-winning performance in “Forrest Gump?” The fact is, he wasn’t the original actor to be offered the role.

John Travolta, Bill Murray and Chevy Chase all turned down the starring role in the film before Hanks had a crack at it.

It seems unlikely that the film would’ve had the same impact if one of the original choices had taken the part instead.

Travolta has freely admitted his regret at having refused the role but luckily for him, his career hasn’t suffered much.

Sean Connery’s portrayal of James Bond in seven of the Bond series movies were unforgettable, to say the least. But he turned down several other important starring roles, including another Bond movie, “Live and Let Die,” which went to Roger Moore. Connery also turned down the role of “Gandalf” in “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy and the role of “Morpheus” in “The Matrix” series, which eventually when to Laurence Fishburne.

Speaking of “Pretty Woman,” Darrly Hannah also had a chance to star in the movie but apparently she didn’t like the idea of playing a prostitute so she turned it down. In fact, both Meg Ryan and Michelle Pfeiffer were offered the role and turned it down for similar reasons. Neither has lacked for success in their careers due to that decision.

3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened 2 1/2 tablespoon minced green onion 1 1/2 tablespoons lemon juice 1 1/2 tablespoons minced parsley 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon black pepper 1/2 teaspoon chili powder 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg 1 to 2 dashes, hot sauce 1. In a small bowl, mix together butter, green onion, lemon juice, parsley, salt, pepper, chili powder, Worcestershire sauce, nutmeg and hot sauce.

Cover and refrigerate at least 1 hour or up to 7 days. Leave husks on corn, but remove the silk strands. Spread

each ear of corn with 1 tablespoon herb butter. Wrap each ear in the husk in foil.

2. Roast corn on barbeque grill, turning every 3 to 4 minutes for 10 to 15 minutes, or use oven broiler, and place corn 4 inches from heating element for 30-minutes, turning every 5 to 10 minutes, or until kernels are tender.

3. Unwrap foil, and detach and discard husks and any remaining silks.

oogle “self-confidence” and you will get three-bazillion web pages that suggest a variety of ways for you to gain self-confidence.

Some promise instant self-confidence if you do this or act like that.

Common sense tells you nothing as powerful as quiet self-confidence comes once you learn a few tricks and make a few tweaks to your personality.

With those few tricks and tweaks you can mask your self-doubt, but somehow through your face or hands or other body language, the truth of your selfdoubt leaks out, your mask melts away and you are caught with your confidence

fidence in my own skills. The kind of confidence you want is the quiet deepseated confidence that is present even if you are on the losing team!

Fake it. The old saw, “Fake it ‘til you make it” is not anything new.

It has been offered as a way to portray confidence when you have none. Perhaps we could call this the Halloween Trick for Instant Self-Confidence: wear a mask. Pretend you are something you are not. A synonym for fake is phony.

When you are a phony you are not confident, you are anxious.

Buy it is another cheap and ineffective way to acquire confidence.

You feel insecure so you go out and buy a new car, a stylish dress, a leather briefcase, the latest iPhone, or some other thingy that renews you poise or reestablishes your coolness. Does it work? Of course it does; for awhile at least. Then

There are at least four artificial ways to acquire confidence: Catch it. A sports team can suddenly play with great confidence because of one good play or because an enthusiastic audience cheers them on. It’s called momentum and it’s a wonderful thing when it works for you. However, momentum goes in two directions – for you and against you. Catching a wave of momentum is great, but it is not the long-term, deeply held quiet confidence that you want.

Borrow it is a second artificial confidence acquiring technique. A salesman can borrow the confidence of his sales manager if they go on a sales call together. The problem is when he is on his own his confidence may dissipate. I play basketball with several other seniors and I notice that when I play with the better players I have more con-

the newness wears off and the coolness dissipates and you are back to your insecure self.

What’s interesting is that these things do work to some degree. It helps to have some good breaks (Catch it).

We all need encouragement (Borrow it).

It makes sense to imitate positive role models until we learn successful ways of doing things (Fake it). And, dressing right and having the right tools also helps (Buy it).

Fortunately, this complication can be largely prevented with the use of the shingles vaccine, which most people over 60 should get, even if they have had shingles before. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently heard on the news that eating nuts reduces the risk of pancreatic cancer. Is this true? -- Anon.

CUT THE NERVE, END THE PAIN? DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 85 and in fairly good health, but I am in my ninth year of extremely painful post-herpetic neuralgia.

Instead of diminishing, the pain is increasing. It could be that the gabapentin (600 mg, three times daily) is wearing off. I tried Lyrica, but stopped when it hurt my eyes.

The pain can be excruciating, even from the touch of a shirt. A relative suggested cutting the affected nerve. What would you recommend? -- F.S. ANSWER: Post-herpetic neuralgia is a syndrome of pain due to inflammation of the nerves after an infection with herpes zoster. The older you are, the more likely you are to get this complication, and the longer the pain tends to last -- but nine years is much longer than normal.

Treatment for post-herpetic neuralgia is often with several medications. Gabapentin (Neurontin) is one, but the effective dose is sometimes quite high, as high as 1,200 mg three times daily. Many people get very fatigued at that high a dose. A much older medication, nortriptylene, is more effective in some people and may be worth a try.

Capsaicin cream provides relief for many people, although it can cause some burning when first applied. I recommend starting with the regular, not high-potency, strength.

Unfortunately, surgery -- at any level, from the end of the nerve to the brain -- has not been consistently effective and carries the

ANSWER: The data is now pretty solid that all kinds of nuts not only reduce heart disease risk, but also cancer risk, including pancreatic cancer. A recent study in the New England Journal of Medicine showed a reduction in all cancers. I wouldn’t eat nuts just to reduce pancreatic cancer risk, but it’s a good way to improve overall health. Nuts have healthy fats, proteins and micronutrients that may be responsible for the lowered risk of disease. Nuts also make you feel full and less likely to eat snacks that are less healthy. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have worn a sterling silver chain and cross for years. Over time, I have noticed that it’s gone from shiny to dark. I have never polished it. Right now it is almost black. Is it something in my body chemistry that does this? -- V.S. ANSWER: The black discoloration is tarnish, an oxidation of the metal. Even sterling silver can tarnish, and some people’s body chemistry can indeed make tarnishing more likely. Some people will complain of the dark discoloration if the tarnish rubs off on the skin. More-acidic sweat, and more traces of sulfur, will cause more tarnish.

This is very different from nickel allergy, which can cause mild but occasionally more severe skin reactions. Sterling silver does not contain nickel.

he Kentucky Derby as well as the annual shareholders meeting for Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway are held on the first Saturday in May. They are both events that I look forward to each year with excitement. The Kentucky Derby showcases the best that horse racing has to offer and I believe it is one of the most exciting events in sports. The Run For The Roses also brings with it the annual promise that this year might be the year that we have a Triple Crown Winner.

Meanwhile, in Omaha, NE, what has become known as the Capitalist Woodstock, thousands of Berkshire shareholders gather to observe and question the practical wisdom of Warren Buffet and Charlie Munger. For me it is one of the most exciting events in the financial world. You cannot leave without feeling positive about American business and the opportunities that lie ahead.

Sadly, this year I missed both events.

But here are some past Buffet quotes worth remembering.

“Every tomorrow has been uncertain.”

There are very few guarantees in life.

That is especially true with investing.

With that said, it is that uncertainty of tomorrow that creates the opportunities today. Our goal as investors is not to eliminate risk but to balance risk with the rewards we expect. To be a successful investor we need to learn to embrace uncertainty and the promises it brings.

“Never risk what you have and need, for what you don’t have and don’t need.”

Simply put, don’t gamble with the rent money. Too often, when I review a financial portfolio, I find just that – investments that put the investor’s goals and dreams at risk in the hope of some greater payout. Sadly that payout becomes nothing more than another broken promise. A better approach would be to define your needs and choose investments that support those goals.

“Turnarounds seldom turn around.”

I have never seen the long shot win the Kentucky Derby. That doesn’t mean it hasn’t. It just doesn’t happen very often. In the investment world turnarounds do happen and they often pay off big. Unfortunately, for many investors turnarounds don’t turn around and their investments end up being worth-

less. For the second richest man in the world it’s not worth the gamble. That should tell you something.
