s humans, sometimes we get to do what we want to do. But most of the time we do what we have to do. Some of those “have-to-do” activities are more enjoyable than others. But sometimes, we flat out hate doing something. Perhaps you dread mopping your kitchen floors. Maybe it’s cleaning your shower that bugs you. Or it could be pulling weeds in your front yard that gets your goat the most. If you’re a living, breathing human being, there’s SOMETHING that annoys you so much, you avoid it as best you can. However, just like anything else, there are some things you can’t avoid forever no matter how much you hate it. And naturally, Snippetz wanted to find out what those dreaded (but necessary) activities are. Since they aren’t the same for every person, we decided to pick some of the most popular ones that hit home for us . . . and here they are (in no particular order).

As with getting out of bed, doing laundry has several facets that seem to bug people enough to rank on the list of most hated activities. In some instances, it’s the actual act of gathering, washing and drying the laundry that makes people cringe. For others, it’s the mind-numbing, never-ending task of folding all those cleans clothes so they can be put away. Some people hate the folding part so much, they avoid it altogether and opt to leave their clean clothes in a laundry hamper at the foot of the bed each night, only to dump them out onto the bed in search of a clean pair of shorts the following morning (but we won’t mention who would do such a silly thing). In the end, most people will break down and fold their clothes, even if they have to do so grudgingly and with lots of bad T.V. to take their mind off the task at hand.
Picture this: it’s a cold December night and you’re dog-tired. You’re in your favorite pajamas and you pull back the blankets on your bed, climb in and get nice, warm and comfortable. But suddenly, you remember something that you must do. Do you get up? What if it can’t wait until the morning?
“3 Big Questions: NFL Preseason” Nick Snips by Nick Yanez... 14
For those of us who are decisive and know what we like, picking a restaurant to enjoy a meal isn’t such a bad thing. But there are people out there who never seem to be able to make up their mind. And for some reason, that inability to choose is rarely more frustrating than when trying to decide where to eat. The “where-do-youwant-to-eat” conversation can drive the most mentally-stable person over the edge. Maybe it’s because we wait to discuss it until we’re hungry and cranky. Whatever the reason, it’s definitely a conversation many of us will avoid if we can.

sand times easier. For others, dealing with the stuck-on, baked-on remnants of a meal is too much to handle. Whatever the reason, doing the dishes is a mainstay on just about every “Hated Activity” list and so we put it on ours, as well.
Ya Gotta Do, What Ya Gotta Do!... Continued from Page 1
This is just one of several instances where getting out of bed can be a dreaded activity. Others range from getting out of bed in the morning (especially to go to work or when it’s really early) to getting up when you’ve just gotten comfortable. The one that seems to be the most annoying instance of all in reference getting out of bed is when you have to get up because you need to use the bathroom. For some reason, even though using the bathroom is a very necessary activity, people hate getting out of bed to do so.
MAKING SMALL TALK Many of us have been in that uncomfortable situation where small talk was unavoidable. We pretend to be incredibly concerned about the weather or how the Broncos are doing or even what reality T.V. star has gotten thrown in jail again. These awkward and anxiety-provoking conversations can be so Ya Gotta Do, What Ya Gotta Do!... Continued on Page 3
DOING THE DISHES In some households, the person who does the cooking gets to put up their feet after the meal while the other person cleans up. How likely is it that every person who cooks in each of those households really enjoys cooking? Isn’t it equally likely that they just don’t like cleaning up the dishes afterwards? Even with the advent of the dishwasher many years ago, people still dread doing the dishes. For some, it’s because they just don’t have a dishwasher to make the job a thou-

uncomfortable for some people that they will go to great lengths to avoid it. In this day and age, where technology abounds, it’s easier and easier to bury your nose in your phone or your tablet to keep from having to (gasp!) engage in small talk with someone. Is it really that bad? To many people, yes. And that’s why it’s on our list of hated activities!
PAYING BILLS This one is self-explanatory. Sitting down to assess how much money you have and then watching it seep out of your bank account with every bill you pay can be a seriously depressing activity, especially if the bills outweigh the money you’ve got coming in. Even if you’re doing well financially and there’s plenty of money left over once you’ve taken care of your bills, the act of taking your hard-earned money and “giving” it away can be very unpleasant. But it’s a necessary evil we all face and in order to keep from going bankrupt from avoiding paying the bills, most of us face this activity on a routine basis. It’s really no wonder that this one recurs on most lists of hated activities.

How many times have you gone to the trashcan in your kitchen only to find the lid barely shuts? And how many times have you used that empty can of beans to push down the trash to make sure the lid closes, thus avoiding having to take the trash out . . . at least for a few more hours? We’re probably all guilty of doing this but why? It’s really not such a huge deal in the end. You cinch the bag closed, heave it out of the canister and take it to the receptacle in the garage. What’s the big deal? Even though it’s a simple task, it still ranks high up on the list of things people really hate doing.

If you have a child who may be ‘acting out’, explore the child’s diet for sugar and processed foods first. Then explore if his or her expression is being suppressed, denied, or judged by anyone (usually an adult). If this is the case, take action to encourage expression. Because botanists define food that develops from the flower of a plant as fruit, cucumbers -- like tomatoes and many other surprising foods such as avocados, corn, beans and peas -- are, scientifically speaking, classified as fruit. With its unassuming flavor, cucumbers are versatile in ways that other fruits and vegetables aren’t.

Studies show that cucumber helps to reduce your risk of several different types of cancers. • Stabilize blood pressure. Patients, with both high and low blood pressure, often find that eating cucumber brings relief. • Refresh the mouth. Cucumber juice refreshes and heals diseased gums, leaving your mouth smelling good. • Smooth hair and nails. Silica, the wonder mineral in cucumber, makes your hair and nails stronger and shinier. • Soothe muscle and joint pain. All those vitamins and minerals make cucumber a powerful enemy of muscle and joint pain. • Keep kidneys in shape. Cucumber lowers uric-acid levels in your system, keeping the kidneys happy. • Good for diabetics, who can enjoy cucumber while reaping its health benefits: Cucumber contains a hormone needed by the cells of the pancreas to produce insulin. • Reduces cholesterol. A compound called sterols in cucumber helps reduce bad cholesterol. For all their wonderful qualities, cucumbers can, at times, be slightly bitter, and it’s important when choosing them at the market to select smaller fruit. Cucumbers often are sprayed with pesticides, so use organic cucumbers as much as possible. Young cucumbers likely will have smaller seeds and are usually sweeter. English or hot house cucumbers are longer than most other varieties and have a thin, tender skin, so they are great to leave unpeeled. When choosing cucumbers for pickling, look for the nubby, small cucumbers (often called “pickling cucumbers”) for the best results. There also is an interesting type of cucumber called lemon cucumbers. They’re called “lemon” not because of the taste, but because they are about the size of a

lemon and yellow-colored when ripe. When at their best, cucumbers of all kinds can bring a whole new type of cool to your summertime meals. Cucumbers are the perfect addition to salads, slaws and other cold dishes. They add a fresh crispness to cool soups, which are especially good for warm season meals. Cucumbers can be shaped into interesting edible containers to hold more strongly flavored dips and stuffings. Cucumbers of all varieties are loved for their texture as much as their taste. Since cucumbers are approximately 95 percent water, they could be considered a fibrous, pleasantly flavored thirst quencher. My simple recipe for Cucumber Lemonade is the perfect way to use cucumbers to refresh and rehydrate during the dog days of summer.

Using a blender, juicer or food processor, combine water and cucumber until mixture is smooth. Strain mixture over a pitcher or large bowl using a fine mesh strainer, and discarding the solids (you won’t have to do this step if using a juicer). T
he National Institutes of Health and the National Institute on Aging have compiled an analysis of seniors age 65 and older, based on the 2010 Census. The information gives a clear picture of who we are and what we’re doing in areas of location, health and economics.
• Women outnumber men (this we know!) and it started at age 35 when the male/female balance shifted. By age 65, there are one hundred women to every eighty-nine men. • Seniors are the only group to have an increase in voter participation. • Our workforce levels have risen, up to 22 percent for men and 13 percent for women. (The rate for those ages 25 to 34 fell.) Age 65 and older is the only group not to have a decline in employment rate.

PURPOSE FOR LIVING: WHO ARE YOU? By Ron Ross
W
ho am I, and, why am I here? Those are the two most important questions you can ask
yourself.
Let’s answer question 1, “Who am I?” Some say you’re the product of a bit of slime that squirmed its way out of some prehistoric bog and evolved from this to that, then to something else until one day, some fifty-million years later, “YOU” appeared. That’s the good news. The bad news is that after fifty-million years of evolution you’re given only a stingy seven or eight wearisome decades until they stick you back into the bog you allegedly came from? What a deal! Others opine that you are the reincarna-

tion of some poor wretch who fought in the Peloponnesian Wars or who served in the courts of King Arthur only to die and then return in the 21st Century as “YOU”. Sounds depressing to me because it means that after you die you could show up again on this little planet as a cow, a crow or the great-great grandchild of some robber baron in Pakistan. Then there are those who think you came from no place and are returning to the same place you came from. They figure you are either a winner or a loser in life’s unregulated unpredictable heartless lotteries and have no particular control over what happens. And when it’s all over, well, it’s all over, so it doesn’t much matter what you do in the interim. Do whatever you want.

massive stadiums.
If you think you are the only person on earth who has a sense of eternity deep within your soul you would be wrong. I have been around the world in Europe, Asia, China, Africa and the Americas and everywhere I went I witnessed the souls of men, women and children reaching out to some kind of God.
Everywhere you go, no matter the age you study, people search for God. Why? For one reason: He created every man, woman and child who has ever lived and when he did, he placed eternity in their hearts.
In Europe I saw great cathedrals, in Thailand I saw the Golden Buddha, in China I saw thousands of gods in temples and on buildings everywhere, in Africa I watched witch doctors dance feverishly in an attempt to conger up spirits, In Belize I stood on the pyramids built centuries ago to appease the Mayan Sun God. In the United States I have worshipped in grand stone cathedrals, tiny wooden churches, renovated warehouses and
Who you are, I believe, is much more than any of these or other insipid, uninspiring answers to Question 1. It makes more sense to me that you and I are exactly what we appear to be: intricately designed specially created individuals with the stamp of eternity on our souls
8
So quite honestly, your search for who you are does not begin with you, it begins with the God who created you. In the next chapter I will answer the question, “Where do you find the God who created you?” You can read all of Dr. Ross’ columns by visiting RonRossToday.com. -- will have some readings that are higher than others. However, readings of 195/105 are too high. Even your relatively better average of 145/90 is too high. One test that is often done is called an ambulatory blood pressure measurement. A blood pressure monitor is worn for 24 hours and takes your blood pressure every 15-20 minutes during the day and 30-60 minutes during sleep. It’s possible that your blood pressure is normally in the good range but spikes every time you or your doctor take it -- I have seen a few cases of this.
BLOOD PRESSURE RISES AT THE DOCTOR’S OFFICE DEAR DR. ROACH: I have had high blood pressure at times, and my doctor said I have white coat syndrome. I am on metoprolol and ramipril. My blood pressure spikes at times. Recently I didn’t feel right. My blood pressure was reading 200/120, more or less, over 12 hours. I went to my doctor, who gave me something that would bring it down and told me to double up on metoprolol. I took readings at home, and for the next three days it was better but still on the high side. The average over 12 hours was 145/90. I went to a specialist and took along my readings. He didn’t seem alarmed that I had several spikes of 190/105. He told me it’s normal to have high blood pressure readings, everyone has them. I can understand occasional spikes, but mine goes up and stays up for hours. -- G. ANSWER: Let’s first define white-coat hypertension, also called reactive hypertension. It’s a condition where blood pressure in the doctor’s office is much higher than blood pressure at home. Consistent regular readings at home are a better marker of overall blood pressure. At first glance, that doesn’t seem to be what you have. You have high blood pressure consistently, at least recently. Even people with whose blood pressure generally is well-controlled -- either naturally or because they take medication
An echocardiogram also can detect changes in the heart, most commonly enlargement of the left ventricle, which may show damage from high blood pressure. I suspect you may need additional treatment. This is usually medication, but salt restriction and stress management can reduce blood pressure in most people. High blood pressure is one of our most common ailments. The booklet on it describes what it does and how it’s treated. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 104W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Some time ago, I had a lot of noise coming from my stomach, a kind of growling sound. It went away, but now it comes on again once in a while. No pain, just the noise. -- T. ANSWER: These noises go by the official-sounding name of borborygmi (BORboh-RIG-mee), and are both common and normal the vast majority of the time. They reflect the movement of the stomach and the intestines. Since there is no pain, you don’t have to do anything about them.
*** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. (c) 2014 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

• On Aug. 1, 1498, Italian explorer Christopher Columbus sets foot on the American mainland for the first time, in present-day Venezuela. Columbus, a deeply religious man, decided that Venezuela was the outer regions of the Garden of Eden. • On July 29, 1862, Confederate spy Marie Isabella “Belleâ€? It was only a minor hit until the Searchers version. 3. “Black Is Black,” in 1966. Because of the similarity in lead voices, many thought it was done by Gene Pitney. 4. Bobby Rydell, in 1960. It did well, but not as well as his “Wild One.” 5. “Black Denim Trousers and Motorcycle Boots,” by The Cheers in 1955, one of the first in the teenage tragedy songs genre. • It was novelist Ayn Rand who made the following sage observation: “You can avoid reality, but you cannot avoid the consequences of avoiding reality.” • Those who study such things say that penguins are ticklish. • On the whole, Texas is a good bit hotter than Ohio, wouldn’t you think? You might be surprised to learn, then, that on a per capita basis, Cleveland has 42 times as many swimming pools as Fort Worth. • The 21 Club is a posh New York restaurant that has been in operation since 1922, though it has undergone some changes since its early days. The eatery’s policy prohibiting women from wearing pants to dine didn’t change until 1969. That was the year when “LaughIn” actress Judy Carne entered wearing what has been described as a “tunic-
topped pants suit.” When she was told she wouldn’t be allowed to dine, she took off her pants and left them in the coat-check room. The tunic by itself just barely qualified as a micro-mini, but it was enough. The 21 Club changed its policy the next day. • Smiling is a natural human instinct. Even people who have been blind since birth smile when they’re happy. • Ireland has the distinction of being the first nation in the world that had one woman succeed another woman as head of state, when, in 1997, Mary MacAleese was elected president after Mary Robinson served in that position. • During World War I, the opposing armies called a truce to celebrate Christmas 1914. During the truce, a group of German soldiers and a group of British soldiers met in the no-man’s land between the opposing trenches to play a soccer match. *** Thought for the Day: “Forever is composed of nows.” -- Emily Dickinson (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

3 BIG QUESTIONS: NFL PRESEASON by Nick Yanez
bolster its defense and add a couple of weapons for Peyton Manning. On the offensive side, it appears Denver came out about even (losing WR Decker, adding WR Emmanuel Sanders). The addition of TJ Ward and Aquib Talib in the secondary with a past-his-prime DeMarcus Ware on the defensive line should help out in the short term. You have to expect Denver’s record setting 2013 offense to take at least a small step back though, so with the defense improving I think Denver will show they are about as talented a team as last year, but more well-rounded. Expect an uneventful pre-season with Manning playing very little. What team will be most improved? The
amazing thing about being an NFL fan is the turnover in team success from year-to-year. Each and every season fans are stunned by a team that goes from “worst to first” in just one year. In 2012 the Washington Redskins improved 5-wins to take first place in the division and a playoff seed. In 2013 it was the Kansas City Chiefs who stormed out of the gate with a 9-0 record just one year after finishing as the league’s worst team. So who will show signs in the pre-season of being this year’s shocking team? A lot of pundits point to the Buffalo Bills and Houston Texans as contenders. Houston was a Super Bowl contender just a few years ago and the Bills seem to have a solid core of talent. Unfortunately neither
A
s we round out July and enter into August a couple of things come to mind. One of them is that hopefully we’re in the back stretch of the “hotness”. August will surely bring its wave of heat, but by the end of the month it should start to cool. Another August attribute is that school will be starting up! Kids from ages 6 to 18, much to their chagrin, will be enjoying yet another season of learning! Despite things like seasons and schooling, August takes my mind to one place specifically before anywhere else – Football Season. As teams reported to training camp last week, we find ourselves staring right in the face of the 2014 NFL Season. Amazing how fast it comes around isn’t it? In fact, the 2014 preseason kicks off this Sunday, August 3rd in a game between the New York Giants and the Buffalo Bills. So without further ado, I present to you 3 BIG questions for the 2014 preseason: Will Johnny Manziel be the starter in Cleveland? After Cleveland drafted the phenomena known as Johnny Football with the 22nd overall pick, expectations for the lowly Browns skyrocketed. The fan base is so pumped up, they’ve made Manziel’s jersey the number 1 selling in the league! But we already know Johnny can build hype, the question is can he play at the NFL level? His game is similar to that of RGIII, the suddenly-embattled Redskins QB, who suffered a major injury his first year after tearing up the field and helping Washington to a division title. I think RGIII’s career arc to this point could be indicative of Manziel; he might just be too small, too fragile. It says here that veteran QB Brian Hoyer wins the job, but Johnny Football starts at some point this season – the next question is, will he stay healthy long enough to make an impact? Are the Broncos better? After a humiliating Super Bowl loss exposed what looked like a dominant team in the regular season, the Denver Broncos went to work in the offseason. Having one of the busiest Free Agency periods in the league, Denver attempted to

Quarterback is a proven prospect. That being said, I expect the Buffalo Bills to look like the most improved NFL team throughout pre-season, even if they fail to live up to the hype come the regular season. Please read my follow-up article the 2014 NFL Season Preview Special the week of NFL’s Kickoff Game, September 4th. We’ll see if my pre-season predictions came true and what to expect during this year’s NFL season.
