“Birds are the most popular group in the animal kingdom. We feed them and tame them and think we know them. And yet they inhabit a world which is really rather mysterious.” – David Attenborough, British journalist

aking up on a Sunday morning to the sounds of birds singing outside your window is arguably one of the most pleasant parts of the summer months in Colorado. We are lucky to have a wide variety of birds that call our fair state home, from the cheerful robin to the mournful mourning dove. But as residents of this beautiful state, we don’t have the privilege to claim any species of parrots. And that’s a shame. There are so many wonderful species of parrots out there and they are each unique and interesting in their own way. Such a beautiful and enigmatic bird deserves a little attention so of course Snippetz decided it was time to take a deeper look at the colorful world of parrots.

You’d be hard pressed to find someone who didn’t know that parrots have the ability to mimic human speech. While they aren’t the only birds to have this ability (crows, ravens and jays can, as well) studies have shown that the African Grey Parrot may even be able to associate words with their meanings. One of the most popular African Grey named Alex, was trained to use words to identify objects, describe them and in some instances, answer complex questions about them.

CHARACTERISTICS OF PARROTS

“Acquire Confidence: Part 5. Where Do You Find The God Who Created You?” Your Weekly Kick in the Pants! by Dr. Ron Ross... 8

There are about 372 species of parrots that fall into one of three super families: the “true” parrots; the cockatoos and the New Zealand parrots. They can be easily identified by their strong, curved bill, upright stance, strong legs and zygodactyls clawed feet (meaning they have four toes total with two pointing forward and two pointing backwards). Parrots are generally very brightly colored and often have lot of different colors in their plumage. Cockatoos are the exception to the brightly-colored rule; they range in color from mostly white to mostly black and have a crest of feathers on the tops of their heads that they can consciously move.

Without vocal cords, it seems strange that parrots are able to mimic human speech at all. They achieve this feat by blowing air across their trachea. By changing the shape and depth of their trachea, they can produce different sounds. They can mimic sounds that they hear in their environment, like the sounds of a dog barking or a telephone ringing or even a human’s unique laugh.

The diet of most parrots consists of seeds, nectar, fruit, pollen, flower buds and sometimes insects or some smaller animals. Parrots have been known to appear to be eating a piece of fruit when they are actually just tearing apart the fruit’s meat in order to access the seeds to eat. Their sharp, curved bill makes an excellent tool for crushing and shredding the outer husk of a seed, which is a great skill to have when the outer husk of that seed is poisonous. They are smart enough to remove the husk they’ve destroyed so they can safely eat the seed inside. Some species will eat clay which can help absorb any toxins they may have ingested during their meal.

20 years, some of the larger species of parrots like the Kakapo can actually live beyond 80 years.

HOME SWEET HOME Not surprisingly, in general parrots are like most other birds in that they lay their eggs in a nest. However, some species will choose to lay their eggs in a tree hole, ground tunnel, rock cavity or termite mound.

LOOK BUT DON’T TOUCH While it may be really amazing to see a parrot in the wild while on vacation, it’s illegal to take a parrot from the wild in the attempt to domesticate it. This was done as a way to protect the birds, especially the roughly 130 species on the endangered or threatened list. Currently, there are 19 species of parrots that are recognized as extinct since the year 1600. Another reason for the ban on attempts to domesticate wild parrots is the rise in the feral parrot population. Wild parrots escape their new domestic homes A Bird’s-Eye Look At Parrots... and make a new, wild home wherever they happen to be. This can lead to a spike in their population, almost to the point of becoming a pest due to the threat to the local ecosystem where they’ve settled.

IT SEEMED LIKE A GOOD IDEA AT THE TIME . . . It’s a sad truth but some people buy a parrot in the hopes that they will have a new, wonderful pet, only to have to either re-home or euthanize the animal because they can’t handle caring for it. It’s said that caring for a parrot is similar to caring for a three-year-old child. And as parrots mature and experience hormonal surges, they can often display unwanted behavior like biting, screaming and chewing on things. Overall, parrots have been the victims of some misunderstandings when it comes to their care and maintenance. For example, in his book “The Grey Parrot,” author Wolfgang de Grahl relates that some parrot importers actually allowed the birds to drink only coffee while they were being shipped. He claims these transporters thought pure water was actually detrimental to their health, when in fact, the caffeine in coffee is toxic to birds.

NATIONAL PARROT PRIDE Parrots are considered sacred in some cultures, like the Moche people of ancient Peru but they also inspire a spirit

of nationalism for some countries. The flag of Dominica features a parrot and the St. Vincent parrot is the national bird of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, a nation in the Caribbean.

PARROT SNIPPETZ Parrots are the only birds that are able to pick up food with their feet and bring it to their mouths to eat it. • The African Grey is the best mimic but a parrot in the wild will not imitate or mimic. • The Kakapo is the only nocturnal parrot, the heaviest parrot and also happens to be flightless. • The smallest parrot is the pygmy parrot, tipping the scales at a whopping 0.4 ounces and reaching about 3.5 inches long. • In many parrot species, the male and female are identical in their appearance – a blood test would need to be done to determine who was who. • Parrots usually sleep standing on one leg. • Parrots can see ultraviolet light. • All parrot species lay white eggs. • New Zealand’s kea parrot is the world’s only cold-weather parrot and has a bit of an ornery streak; they are said to like to swing on car antennas and slide down the snowy roofs of ski lodges. They have also been blamed for instances of pillaging for food in those same lodges, gaining access to the interior of the lodge by way of the chimney.

Peaches, too, are like a symphonic variation on a theme, with hundreds of types that grow well in temperate climates. Peaches epitomize the extravagance of the season of sunshiny days and the abundance that comes with them. It takes so many things to happen at just the right time for this truly precious fruit to produce its bounty. If the winter is cold for just enough days, and if the spring comes at just the right time, and if the lovely pink buds are allowed to bloom and are not interrupted by mixed-up temperatures, and if rain comes but not the hail, and if the sun shines for long enough, we are rewarded.

Freestone peaches arrive later in the season. Because the flesh comes away easily from the pit or stone in this variety, freestone peaches are easier to work with in culinary preparations, and they’re also firmer and will hold up to heat. White peaches are usually sweeter, like juicy candy, but because they contain more water, they don’t hold up as well as yellow peaches when cooking. They are wonderful for raw preparations, though.

Place a 3 1/2-inch round cutter in center of peach mixture on plate. (A ramekin or a clean, empty tuna can with both ends removed may be used instead.) Machines, as defined by French Biochemist and Nobel Laureate Jacques Lucien Monod (1910-1976), are “purposeful aggregates of matter that, utilizing energy, perform specific tasks.” This definition applies to mouse traps and living organisms as both fulfill Monod’s definition all the way down to the molecular level.

You, like 99.9% of all humans, have a universal sense of morality. You know intuitively that some things are good and some are bad; some things are right and some things are wrong. Where did you get those ideas? No one has to tell a child that it is wrong to lie or that it is wrong to take something that isn’t theirs.

You may not think of yourself as a machine, but every molecule in your body has an intricate design that works in harmony with billions of others so you can live, work, play, think, laugh, cry, create, write, dream, love, walk, eat, see, hear, reproduce, etc. You are a magnificent, intricate, computer, appliance, engine, instrument, (and much more) sophisticated creation of a Master

You, like 99.9% of all humans have a natural quest for God. Want some proof? What do you scream when you are scared? Most people will scream, “Oh God!” That’s a prayer. Where did that prayer come from?

8

Did you mother teach you that? Did your teachers at school teach you that? No. It comes from within you. You, like 99.9% of all humans, wonder about God. Hidden tribes in South American jungles wonder about God and create all kinds of ways to communicate with Him. Intellectuals in Universities wonder about God too, only many of them do it by attempting to rid the world of Him. One Christian writer said of a well known Atheist, “He hates God but he doesn’t believe in him.” More next week. To read all of Dr. Ross’ columns visit RonRossToday.com. Individualized treatment for:

but with hyperhidrosis, the amount of sweat is much greater than normal and can have serious emotional, professional and social effects.

SWEATING BUCKETS DEAR DR. ROACH: I hope you can help me. I am 67 years old and have been sweating profusely from my head for about six years. I believe it is secondary hyperhidrosis. No one in my family has this problem. The sweating seems to happen at all different times, but not at night. The moisture runs in rivulets from my scalp anytime from morning to evening, but mostly in the morning. I tried stopping my water pill, but it still happened. It happened when I stopped vitamins and took only my medications for physical problems. My doctor tested my thyroid, and it was fine. Please help me, as it is an embarrassing ailment, and it happens no matter the season or what I have eaten. I do drink tea and coffee, but not soda. There are people who have said I should take Botox, but I have little faith in the product, as it can cause serious health problems and death. -- M.E. ANSWER: “Hyperhidrosis” simply means “too much sweat.” I think you probably have primary hyperhidrosis, meaning that the sweating is the only problem, as opposed to secondary, which means it’s due to something else. Other conditions that can lead to secondary hyperhidrosis include the thyroid disease your doctor looked for, and medications (which it also doesn’t seem to be). Other rare causes, such as tuberculosis and lymphoma, surely would have produced other symptoms by now. The most common sites for hyperhidrosis are the palms, armpits and soles of the feet. Nearly everybody sweats in those places,

The first treatment I would recommend would be a prescription antiperspirant, either aluminum chloride (Xerac) or topical glycopyrrolate (available by compounding pharmacies in the U.S. and Canada). The scalp is a harder place than most to apply it, but after applying, you can dry with a hair dryer, and use a plastic shower cap to keep the medicine on at nighttime. Occasionally, oral medications such as clonidine are used. Botulinum toxin (Botox) is usually quite safe in expert hands. A last resort is surgery to remove the sympathetic nerves to the scalp, a procedure that’s very effective. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: In a recent column, you wrote, “Some people can’t absorb fructose.” I’d like to know more about that. What are the side effects of the inability to absorb fructose? How does that happen? -- I.N. ANSWER: Fructose is a sugar naturally found in fruits, but also in sweeteners, especially honey and high-fructose corn syrup. Other sugars, such as glucose, improve fructose absorption. Few people get symptoms just from natural foods, because these contain the other natural sugars that improve fructose absorption. On the other hand, sorbitol (a “sugar alcohol”) decreases fructose absorption.

Almost half the population cannot completely absorb fructose, and the more fructose people take in, the greater the risk of the symptoms of malabsorption, including diarrhea, gas and bloating. I recommend against HFCS for many reasons, but this is another one. For people with symptoms of malabsorption, I recommend a trial of reducing fructose and sorbitol.

• It was Flannery O’Connor, noted American writer of novels and short stories, who made the following observation: “Everywhere I go I’m asked if I think the university stifles writers. My opinion is that they don’t stifle enough of them.” • In Saudi Arabia, there is an entire police unit dedicated solely to the pursuit of crimes of witchcraft. • Lee DeForest, known as the Father of Radio, said in 1926, “While theoretically and technically television may be feasible, commercially and financially I consider it an impossibility, a development of which we need to waste little time dreaming.” • Eleanor Ritchey was the granddaughter of Philip John Bayer, founder of Quaker State Oil. She was the sole inheritor of her grandfather’s fortune, and she had

no children of her own. When she died in 1968 she was worth $12 million. Other than some shoes (1,700 pairs) and stationery (1,200 boxes) that she left to the Salvation Army, her entire estate was used to create a trust for the 150 stray dogs she had adopted. The pets lived in luxury, dying of old age one by one, until 1984, when the last one -- the richest dog in the country -- also succumbed. The remainder of the inheritance then went to Auburn University. • If you’re planning a trip to Syracuse, N.Y., you might want to take a detour about 35 miles east to the small town of Verona. There you can visit the world’s smallest church -- but don’t plan to go in and have a seat. Cross Island Chapel is only 6 feet by 3.5 feet. The minister can stand inside, but everyone else has to stay outside. *** Thought for the Day: “If you can’t get rid of the skeleton in your closet, you’d best teach it to dance.” -- George Bernard Shaw (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

s a person still in my 20’s, I often wonder what kind of evolution I’ll see in our society by the time I near the end of my life. My grandparents for instance, lived in a time when television wasn’t a common household item to now, where satellite gives us the luxury of thousands of channels. Add in cell phones, tablets, and other gadgets and my oldest relatives have witnessed a complete turnover in how society operates on a day to day basis. Can you imagine what we’ll see over the next 60 years? All the time I hear the older generation point out how fast society moves in present times; we’re all in a hurry and they wonder why we can’t just slow down and appreciate

life. While there is some truth to the fact that people could afford to take a breath and love life, there’s also a lot of merit to our current structure. So here is a case for living fast… People have more access to more information than at any time before in human history. Why wouldn’t we take advantage of such a thing? Now is the time to live as previous generations only dreamed they could live. Want an answer to a question? Google it. Want to capture a memorable family moment? Snap a picture on your phone. Want to know how to start a business and get a loan? OK computer, let’s do it. We are capable of anything. Before technology came and took over our collective brains, we were already the most capable and innovative species in the history of the universe (to our knowledge). Now we have a sidekick for everything. We can find our way. We can bring new ideas to life. We can educate ourselves. A day could come where we don’t even need the institution of education like we once did. I recently read a research paper that

showed if a person read just one hour a day on the internet on any subject of their choice, they would become an expert on the subject within seven years. This means in our age, unlike 80 years ago, when Mom tells us we can “be anything we put our minds to” she actually means it. We’re more self-sufficient than ever before. So why then, does it seem like our species is in somewhat of an intellectual and moral decline? It’s hard to say, but I’d be willing to guess that it has something to do with not understanding the concept of moderation. Because we have access to so much, so quickly, people have a tendency to put their lives into a screen. While computers, tablets, and phones do give us the capability of educating ourselves, teens and adolescents have a penchant for using technology in a mind numbing way. Children who are constantly buried in video games and cartoons rarely have the work ethic or motivation to learn and innovate. What I’m trying to say is this – parents need to learn to use technology in a responsible way. Educating chil-

dren from their youngest years about the advantages and dangers of new machinery is the only way to use it to our full advantage. If kids are taught their limits - they’ll quickly learn they have none when it comes to adult life. But it’s not easy. We were all born into some sort of revolutionary time. There came a point when parents had to adjust to the uses of a motor vehicle; they had to learn how to teach their children to use the automobile to advance their lives. This will never stop. Every generation will encounter a new form of living and will be forced to make the adjustment for themselves and their offspring. Which again brings up the question, what will I have to teach my children? Will I understand it myself? Will I teach them to use new technology to advance their limitless potential, or will I accidently show them how to waste away their lives? Only time will tell – it always does. LIVING GOD’S GIFTS bringing Christ into your financial life

INVESTING FROM A BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVE

by Chuck Maher, CFP®

...BRING CHRIST INTO OUR FINANCIAL LIVES

GETTING INVESTMENT FIT

H

ave you ever made the decision to get in shape? To start eating right and working out. To rebuild that fit, healthy body you once had or wish you had. Did you replace the chips with celery sticks, join a gym and maybe even bought some exercise equipment, so you could work out at home? How did that work out for you? If you were like so many, the celery sticks wilted away in the crisper, you’re still paying the monthly fee to the gym and the exercise equipment has become yet another clothes rack. So what happened? I’m not a fitness coach but I suspect that, even though we had a goal and willingness to take action, we failed to have a systematic plan, filled with short term achievable goals, and a way of recognizing success. In investing I have found that many people handle their finances the same way. They will establish a financial goal, develop a plan and even put the plan in action. Yet, like so many things in life, the lack of immediate success and the occasional setbacks create frustration causing them to question their choices and they quickly become distracted with other opportunities. Here are a few ideas to help you get in financial shape and investment fit.

Don’t Wait Make the decision to get started now. Like getting fit, the object is to get off the couch and start moving. Don’t let the ifs and whens get in the way. There is always a reason to wait – once the credit cards are paid off; once school starts; once the raise comes through; once the kids are out of the house. The list is almost endless, so put time on your side (especially for long term investing), set the excuses aside and get started, even if you’re not sure where you’re headed. I can guarantee that your financial dreams will take money, so do something.

Set Achievable Goals Your long term goal may be a successful retirement. If you’re just staring out, that number could seem almost in-

surmountable – maybe even hopeless. Like building a body like Arnold’s, the task can seem overwhelming. So start with the small steps. If you’ve never contributed to your 401(k), the goal may be to start with 1% of your income and work up from there. Or you could start a systematic investment plan with a mutual fund. Many funds will open an account with as little as $50.00. Set short term goals that are easily achievable. Success breeds success.

Honoring God with Your Financial Blessings CHUCK MAHER CFP PO Box 39 Monument, CO 80132

chuck@chuckmahercfp.com www.chuckmahercfp.com

Use The Right Equipment If your goal is to run a marathon, spending all your time on building upper body strength is probably not the best plan. The same is true with investing. Choose investments that support your goal. If you’re trying to build an emergency fund use a savings account. If your goal is a little farther out you might consider bonds or other low volatility investments. For long term goals, stay with equities. They’re a lot more volatile but over the long term they have provided strong returns. Don’t confuse short term volatility with long term success.

Stick To The Plan Life will get in the way, but don’t let that keep you from success. You may have found that after that first day at the gym your body was sore and you wanted to quit, yet those who persevered were well rewarded. Successful investing takes time and the lack of immediate success can often be frustrating. So celebrate the successes you can. If the market is down, celebrate the fact that you are buying low. If you have to tap into your emergency fund, celebrate the fact that you had the money available to see you through. Whatever you do, don’t abandon the plan. Keep the faith. Your success may well be dependent upon it.

Hire A Coach You don’t have to do it alone. If you’re not sure where to start or what you should be doing now, hire a coach. At the gym you can work with a trainer who can evaluate where you are now, help you establish fitness objectives and put together a workout plan. In the arena of investing a good financial planner does very much the same thing. Working with a professional can bring experiences that may reduce your learning curve.
