I

t’s true that the sound of the ocean lapping the shore on a nice, sandy beach is one of the most beautiful sounds on Earth. But here in ocean-less Colorado, it’s difficult to hear. No matter how quiet you are, the ocean is just a bit too far away. And it’s not like you can just drop everything and head to the beach. That would take planning and money and time, which are all sometimes in very short supply. In an effort to bring the ocean closer to you (and entertain you with what we find!), Snippetz has decided to go island-hopping .

We start off our island-hopping journey with one of the most easily identifiable islands around (from the air, at least): Palm Jumeirah. Located in the city of Dubai, the most populous city in the United Arab Emirates, Palm Jumeirah is an man-made archipelago in the shape of a (you guessed it) palm tree. The 16 “fronds” are a little over half a mile long and the whole thing measures about 3.1 miles from the tip of the middle frond to the mainland. Palm Jumeirah was constructed using boulders taken from mountains in the vicinity as well as more than 360 million cubic feet of sand dredged up from the sea floor in the Persian Gulf.

northerly things in the world, then Spitsbergen is your place! It’s home to the most northerly church, the most northerly airport and the most northerly permanent settlement, the town of Longyearbyen. Spitsbergen is home to the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, which contains a large variety of plant seeds that are held there for safekeeping in the event of a largescale disaster. Should something of that nature happen, the seeds from the seed vault could be used to recreate the necessary biodiversity to help nurse our planet back to health.

SPITSBERGEN

We now jump from the most northerly island of the Svalbard islands to the island populated with the most uncontacted people. North Sentinel Island is about 20 miles west of Smith Island, in the Bay of Bengal. Its 28 square miles are completely covered

We jump from the most westerly island of Hawaii to the most northerly island of the Svalbard islands, north of Scandinavia. The island is a Norwegian territory and as such, isn’t quite what you might consider a prime getaway location. However, if you’re the type to enjoy the most

Amazingly, Palm Jumeirah won’t be the only palm-shaped island forever. Two more palm-shaped islands are either being constructed or set to be built in Dubai in the near future. Palm Jebel Ali will be twice the size of Palm Jumeirah once it’s completed and Palm Deira will be even bigger than that. But just to up the ante, another project in Dubai called “The World” is slated for construction and will feature a cluster of 300 islands grouped together in the shape of a world map.

be able to visit in your dreams (or through this incredibly well-written article). Ni’ihau, the westernmost of the eight major Hawaiian islands, is commonly called “The Forbidden Isle.” Why? Because it is completely privately owned. In 1864, Elizabeth Sinclair, Scottish by birth but whose family owned plantations in New Zealand, purchased the island from the Kingdom of Hawaii for $10,000. Since then, Sinclair’s descendants have continued to own and maintain the island, and there have been little to no visitors there, although recently the island has permitted tourists on safari to take a trip ashore. The island has a population of about 130 people, all of whom speak Hawai’ian as their native language.

in forest, aside from the beaches that encircle the majority of it. The Sentinelese call the island home and are so incredibly xenophobic (meaning they have an intense or irrational dislike or fear of people from other countries) that they resist all attempts at contact from the outside world. They go to great lengths to defend their island from anyone looking to come ashore that they often shoot arrows at boats and helicopters that try. Because of this hostility, virtually nothing is known about the Sentinelese people.

SANTORINI If you’re looking for something a little less dangerous and a little more like paradise, then Santorini may be just what you need. Located in the Aegean Sea, Santorini is the largest of the islands that make up Greece’s archipelago. Missing are the white sandy beaches of your typical tropical daydream, replaced by the black and red sand beaches you might see in a sci-fi flick. The island itself was created during a volcanic eruption around 1650 B.C. that essentially forced a single large island called Strongyli to implode, creating the smaller islands in the archipelago. The same eruption is what caused the city of Atlantis to be lost to the sea, according to legend.

BORA BORA Yet another more idyllic island for vacationing (even if it’s just in your dreams) is Bora Bora. Here you WILL find those white sand beaches that are perfect for kicking back and enjoying your drink of choice. Located in the

South Pacific, Bora Bora is the island where you’ll find the thatched-roof huts on stilts out over gorgeous crystal-clear ocean water. The location is so beautiful, in fact that it inspired James Michener, author of “Tales of the South Pacific” to call it the most beautiful island in the world. British explorer James Cook even dubbed it the pearl of the Pacific. With such well-known men raving about the island, it’s no wonder Bora Bora is an expensive place to visit . . . the island knows its beauty and charges a premium to enjoy it!

THE FLOATING ISLANDS OF LAKE TITICACA We’ve saved the strangest islands for last: the Floating Islands of Lake Titicaca in Peru. These islands are actually mats of buoyant totora reeds that are about 8 to 12 feet thick and are tethered to each other and the bottom of Lake Titicaca. Some measure about half the size of a football field.

The islands are inhabited by the Uros people and it is believed that the tribe was warring with neighboring tribes but couldn’t find land of their own, so they built floating cities in the cold waters of the lake and managed to remain isolated (and unbothered) for centuries.

The Uros people initially created their islands about nine miles into the lake but in 1986, a massive storm demolished many of the islands, which forced those people to rebuild their islands closer to shore. It’s estimated that about 1,200 Uros still live on a string of about 60 floating islands off the coast of Puno.

a fatal car accident? What if your intuitive leads you to prevent a disease of some sort that may have been created otherwise? You may not know this immediately, but it was still prevented. Is there risk involved in healing? You bet! You must risk your false perceptions of life and relationships (including your relationship with yourself). You might risk your personal relationships. I’ve seen where two friends or a couple unite in their similar pain. One person decides to change and the other doesn’t understand it. That relationship will change. But the long-term outcomes outweigh the short-term discomfort one may feel in his/her personal relationships and in life.

PATHWAY PARENTING

I

WHAT IS THE POINT?

’ve heard a few people say that their friends or acquaintances say to them, “What’s the point of all this ‘healing’? “I don’t have time to heal, I have children.” There is a lot to the point of healing. In my experience, healing involves everything. When many people think of healing, they think of physical healing. Healing a disease or an injury of some sort comes to mind. When I think of healing, I typically think of healing on a mental, emotional and/or spiritual level. This is when many might roll their eyes or think, that’s weird or even that’s a waste of time. I wonder if many people perceive this type of healing as New Age or something similar. So, what’s the point of healing? Everything. It allows me to see, address, and conquer different fears, obstacles, and frustrations. Healing gives me the tools to move beyond an obstacle with much less difficulty than perhaps ten years ago. It’s about my quality of life in general. I don’t want to wake up with anxieties, frustra-

tions, or boredom. I don’t want to go to sleep with those either. I don’t want to walk through life in a fog where there is a great lack of excitement and passion. I want the opposite of all that. All the time. Healing doesn’t mean never having a bad day, it means the bad day is not that big of deal. How many of us know someone who consistently blows things out of proportion? Why do they do that? What is important to remember is that healing does not create a ‘perfect’ life. For one: ‘perfection’ is a relative term depending on who’s using it. For two: why try to achieve perfection? For what purpose? Our life is a continuum, it’s always evolving. Also, it’s important to remember that healing does not JUST create positive results, but it ALSO prevents painful results. For example: what if you choose to become more aware of yourself and you set yourself on a journey of self-discovery? You might read some different books, attend some classes, interview different people on their journey, and self-reflect on a deep level. In this process, perhaps you develop a strong intuition that allows you to make wise choices that may make no sense to someone else watching you. What if a wise intuitive choice leads you to avoid

Healing is about being on a journey of self-discovery in order to begin a life of great passion, excitement, and joy. It’s as simple as that. If you have a friend or acquaintance ask you, “What’s the point of all this ‘healing’?” Maybe you can reply, “So, I can feel better with each day and each year passing. It’s that simple.”

Looking for a good watermelon is a little more difficult. There is science behind the “thumping” of a watermelon to test for ripeness. A ripe melon will give off a hollow sound, which indicates that the melon has developed its water content.

A MELON BY ANY OTHER NAME

C

renshaw, Musk, Honeydew, Casaba, Water, Persian ... the list of melons that are grown these days is long. Melons come in a many sizes, shapes, colors and flavors. Sweet, watery and cooling, they’re a gift of the summer harvest that quenches our thirst with a food we can practically drink and eat at the same time! Melons prefer hot, dry days and cool evenings to produce the sugar that gives them their nectarous flavor. Depending on where you live, a ripe, juicy, truly sweet melon may be a gift of the harvest at your local grocery store. While melons transport well, they must be harvested for shipping while still green. Sometimes this works well, other times not, and it can be just another case of falling for beauty that is only skin deep. When choosing melons at the store, press and smell the spot where the fruit was severed from the stem. It should give slightly to the touch and exude a pleasant perfume. Almost all melons, except watermelons, can be

All melons should feel heavy for their size, a sign that they are full of juice. Locally grown melons also will have a flat, yellow spot on one side where it lay as it ripened in the field. Melons are an ancient fruit, first cultivated in Asia and Africa over 4,000 years ago. From there they were introduced to western and northern Europe. Watermelons in particular provided an important source of water to primitive people, and it is believed that the first watermelons were brought to the Americas by African slaves. As a group, melons are a truly beneficial food. They are low in calories and high in potassium, as well as vitamins A and C. They also are a delicious source of fiber. Watermelons are high in lycopene, the pigment that gives them that beautiful pinkish-red color. Lycopene has been shown to help prevent heart disease and some cancers. Even though most melons are known for their sweetness, their flavor melds well with savory ingredients: mixed with herbs and vinegars in salads, or paired with cured meats such as prosciutto and salami for an appetizer. For dessert, the options go from simply scooping the seeds from half The Kitchen Diva Continued on Page 7

My recipe for Jellin’ Melons is an easy, kid-friendly dessert, and the perfect way to showcase the best of summer melons.

JELLIN’ MELONS Fresh or frozen pineapple, papaya, kiwi, figs, guava and gingerroot all contain enzymes that prevent gelatin from setting, so never use them in gelatin recipes. If you don’t have strawberries on hand, you can use a cup of any canned fruits or juices, since the canning process kills this enzyme. 1 large cantaloupe or honeydew melon 1 package (3 ounces) strawberry-banana gelatin (or your choice of gelatin flavor) 1 cup boiling water 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce 1 cup sliced fresh strawberries, leaves

and stems removed 1. Cut the melon in half lengthwise from bud to stem end; discard seeds. Cut a thin slice off the bottom of each half so the melon sits level. Pat the inside of the melon dry and turn it melon-side down on a paper towel to drain thoroughly.

DITCHING CABLE TV

M

ore and more consumers are choosing to stop paying increasing cable TV fees. Your options, as well as the requisite gadgets, have expanded in the past few years. Many TV watchers haven’t cut the cord on cable because it would mean ditching their local stations, especially news and weather. However, network shows have been digital for several years now, and with a digital or HD antenna, you may be able to pull in many of your local stations, such as ABC, CBS and NBC. How many you get will depend where you are in relation to most of the local stations. Let antennaweb.org help you pick an antenna type based on your ZIP code. It shows signal strength in your area and advises, for example, if you’ll need a small multi-directional or a medium directional with a pre-amp, or any other type. The type of antenna you need might run only $30 to 40, a one-time cost. Check Consumer Reports for reviews of HDTV antennas. Check Amazon for reviews by others who’ve made the purchases.

To stream movies, you’ll need a gadget (unless you have a streaming-ready TV set) such as a Roku, Xbox, Wii or PlayStation. If you have an old firstgeneration Roku that isn’t satisfactory enough to make you cut the cable cord, investigate the newer Rokus. You’ll be surprised at the new on-screen software as well as the device itself. If you’re a movie buff, look to Netflix for streaming (around $7 per month) to your television or computer. If you’re an Amazon Prime member, don’t forget about your free Instant Video streaming of shows and movies (they’ve started showing HBO). The cost is approximately the same as Netflix. Prime has raised its rate to $99, compared to Netflix at $96 per year. Their selections of movies and TV shows vary. Scout the sites to see which you prefer. If you buy merchandise from Amazon Prime, the free postage alone might be a deal maker. (Beware clicking around too quickly on Amazon. Sometimes a free movie changes overnight to a fee movie.) At an average of $16 per month, it might be worth having both of them.

If the earth were to move a tiny 2% closer to the sun we would all be toast. If it was only 2% farther away, we would freeze. NASA tells us that we are “just the right distance from the sun.” Evidence 2: The harmony of creation. One of the most astounding natural events is the annual migration of wildebeest in Tanzania’s Serengeti national Park and Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve. It is one of the most spectacular wildlife events on the planet. Approximately 1.5 million wildebeest, 400,000 zebra and 200,000 gazelles move together every year at the same time over the same path and have been doing so for thousands of years.

8

According to decades of study, their movement reveals that wildebeest have no natural leader and that herds split up, some go this way then that, and some head off in a completely different direction, but all of them always end up in relatively the same place every year. Does this happen by accident? How do they know which way to travel? Why do zebra and gazelles travel with them? Who programmed their mind for such a difficult journey? The only intelligent conclusion is that someone smarter than the most clever human computer programmer in history must be responsible.

village south of Choma, Zambia where we stayed for several nights. I stirred a bit as I heard him get out of his tent but he awoke me fully when he said, “Dad! Come and see this!” I moved quickly out of my tent. He pointed to the skies and said, “Look at all those stars!” He was stunned by the handwork of almighty God, the God who created all things great and small, near and far, alive and inert, including you, for His good purposes.

Evidence 3: The beauty of creation. A few years ago I took my son back to Africa where he was born so he could see the beauty of Africa and meet the people we worked amongst. The moment I remember most happened late one night in a Ba-Tonga

Individualized treatment for:

heart attack. -- M.S. ANSWER: Your letter underscores that heart disease can happen even when you do everything right, that a family history is a significant risk factor and that heart attacks happen even in people with good blood cholesterol.

HEART RISK: LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 69. Two years ago, I had a heart attack followed by double bypass surgery; two vessels on the back of my heart were blocked. I had no symptoms. My doctor, family, friends and I were stunned. I was too healthy to have been struck by a heart attack. I was at risk due to my male family members having heart issues. My father died of his third heart attack at age 60. I followed a heart-healthy lifestyle: low body fat, healthy weight, no smoking, no drinking, no red meat, lots of exercise indoors and out. My cholesterol readings had always been in the good range. I am now on simvastatin and losartan daily. I regularly take my blood pressure readings. Since my heart attack and my surgery, I have followed the therapy lifestyle diet in an American Heart Association publication. A year after my heart attack and surgery, I had a treadmill stress test, and all was well. I see my cardiologist every six months and my primary doctor quarterly. What preys on my mind the most is whether or not plaque is building up in any of my blood vessels, leading to a killer heart attack. I wish there was a noninvasive means to at least annually determine the health of my blood vessels. I do not want to wait for symptoms to occur. I want early detection to prevent another

Your question is about a screening test for heart disease, to see whether there are blockages that need treatment before any symptoms develop. There are two kinds of tests: those that look at the anatomy of the heart, such as an angiogram or CT angiogram, and those that look at its function, such as a stress test. The problem with pictures of the blood vessels is that it’s likely you have some blockages. However, small blockages actually may be more likely to cause a heart attack than big ones, since the smaller ones can rupture and cause a blood clot, which starts the heart attack. A stress test, such as the treadmill ECHO you did, is better at showing if the heart is getting all the blood it needs during exercise. My colleagues in cardiology and I recommend a good diet and exercise regimen, a statin, blood pressure treatment such as what you are getting, daily low-dose aspirin and a periodic stress test. An angiogram would be considered with any new symptoms. The booklet on heart attacks, America’s No. 1 killer, explains what happens, how they are treated and how they are avoided. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 102W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

*** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. (c) 2014 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

MOMENTS IN TIME THE HISTORY CHANNEL

• On Aug. 16, 1920, Cleveland Indians shortstop Ray Chapman is struck in the temple by a ball pitched by Carl Mays of the New York Yankees. He died 12 hours later. After Chapman’s injury, it was mandated that scuffed or discolored balls be replaced with new white ones, making them easier to see. • On Aug. 17, 1933, New York Yankees first baseman Lou Gehrig plays in his 1,308th consecutive game, breaking former Yankee Everett Scott’s record for consecutive games played. Gehrig would go on to play in 2,130 games in a row, setting a record that would stand for over half a century. • On Aug. 13, 1948, U.S. and British planes airlift a record amount of supplies into sections of Berlin under American and British control. Despite terrible weather, crowded airspace and exhaustion of the pilots and crews, more than 700 British and American planes brought in nearly 5,000 tons of supplies.

• On Aug. 12, 1953, less than a year after the United States tested its first hydrogen bomb, the Soviets detonate a 400-kiloton device in Kazakhstan. Known as the “Layer Cake,â€? the bomb was fueled by layers of uranium and lithium deuteride, a hydrogen isotope. • On Aug. 15, 1969, the Woodstock Music Festival opens on a patch of farmland in White Lake, New York. By the time the gates opened, more than 400,000 people were clamoring to get in. Those without tickets simply walked through gaps in the fences, and the organizers were eventually forced to make the event free of charge. • On Aug. 11, 1973, “American Graffiti,â€? a nostalgic coming-of-age tale steeped in the car-centric culture of suburban California, is released in theaters. The film went on to become a sleeper hit. • On Aug. 14, 1985, Michael Jackson purchases the publishing rights to the vast majority of the Beatles’ catalog for $47 million, outbidding even Paul McCartney. In later years, the catalog -- now estimated to be worth in excess of $1 billion -- allowed Jackson to remain solvent by serving as collateral for several enormous personal loans. • It was ancient Greek philosopher Plato who made the following sage observation: “Good people do not need laws to tell them to act responsibly, while bad people will find a way around the laws.”

• If you’re a cat lover, you might not be surprised to learn that a group of felines can be referred to as a glaring, a pounce, a clutter or a clowder. Feral cats en masses are known as a destruction of cats.

• How would you like to brush your teeth with salt, chalk or ground brick? The first tooth powders that were used with toothbrushes were made of just such materials.

• People who sustain brain injuries can suffer from a variety of maladies. One of the stranger ones is anosognosia. The victim suffers from some sort of disability, such as losing the ability to move a limb, but that’s not unusual; what makes anosognosia so fascinating is that the person suffering from the limitation seems completely unable to believe that any limitation exists, despite voluminous evidence to the contrary. *** Thought for the Day: “The only difference between me and a madman is that I am not mad.” -- Salvador Dalie

• When you think of hibernating bears, you typically imagine some cozy cave in the woods, right? Well, the next time you’re out for a winter hike, you’d better pay close attention to exactly where you’re going; some bears spend the cold season curled up on the ground in large nests made of branches. • Greyhounds have better vision than any other breed of dog.

purely on how they choose to present themselves. In fact, I have a few relatives who have draped their arms in tattoos and chosen to grow their hair far beyond shoulder-length. 20-years ago, I feel these relatives would be seen as “bad news” or something of the sort. Today, people brush right on by never noticing the ink and hair. That’s a testament to our growth.

alking into a grocery store, one might be surprised by the lack of detail they notice. Many people walk past sales and new promotions, never blinking an eye. Some of us will never catch the name proudly displayed on the cashier. Many people will miss the DVD rental box, unaware of its existence. I think the number one thing we seem to ignore now is people. How many of you could describe the physical attributes of strangers you’d passed at the store? Probably not many. This, for the most part, is a good thing. While I think we could all afford to be a little more aware of our fellow human, we seem to have come a long way as a society. People are no longer as quick to judge one another based

Just because someone chooses to have blue hair, doesn’t mean their heart stops pumping blood (and warm fuzzie’s). Most people have come to realize that they shouldn’t “judge a book by its cover”. Tattoos, piercings, unique haircuts, and individuality-based fashion have become socially acceptable almost overnight. Which has me asking the following question: What does it take to be an outcast in 2014? FACE TATOOS: Sure tattoos aren’t viewed as hardcore and criminal as they were by older generations in the 70’s and 80’s, but that doesn’t mean they are totally customary. Facial and neck tattoos seem to carry a load of negative weight with them. Most employers will accept arm and leg tat-

toos in a professional environment because they can be covered. The same cannot be said for very-upperbody art. Parents will usually guide their children away from anyone with facial and/or neck art. NAKEDNESS: This one seems obvious, but you’d be surprised how many people would like to see a world where we openly accept nakedness in ordinary day-to-day life. When ladies show “too much” skin, it’s typically taken in a sexual context and rebuked by the public. The same could be said (and multiplied) for men. While it’s no big deal for a man to walk around without a shirt on the boardwalk, beach, or even mall, it becomes considerably more offensive if a man loses his pants. Nakedness can result in major legal headaches, including being labeled as a sex offender by the Federal Government. ODD PLASTIC SURGERY: The most uncomfortable people get by the way a peer looks falls under this rare and exclusive category. Plastic surgery has exploded over the last two decades. Things like breast and lip implants, or hair extensions have become commonplace. People aren’t so comfortable with other forms of body-enhancement though. Tongue

splitting, Cinderella Foot, and Neck Stretching are just a few of the selfexplanatory, strange new surgical procedures available for clients. Such things are not considered conventional and would surely pull a few eyes at the local grocery store. So why do we pick and choose what is okay and what is not? I can’t really say. It’s bizarre that we socially accept certain looks and deny others. My best guess would be that we are wired to welcome looks the more often we see them. Back to my earlier point – tattoos are now considered normal because more people have them. Perhaps someday we will walk an Earth littered with naked, tinyfooted, painted people. It won’t be a big deal because we’re all naked and painted and no one can walk. Until that day, I think I will continue the slow evolution of what is acceptable and what is contemptible along with my peers – after all, everyone else is doing it.
