“Considering their impact, you might expect mosquitoes to get more attention than they do. Sharks kill fewer than a dozen people every year and in the U.S. they get a week dedicated to them on TV every year.” – Bill Gates
T
here’s no point in denying it any longer; humans are addicted to sharks. From the youngsters in the swimming pools all summer long, putting their hands on their heads, singing “Dun dun . . . dun dun . . . dun dun dun dun dun dun,” to the whole families gathering around their TVs during the Discovery Channel’s Shark Week, we’re all guilty of the obsession somehow. And rightfully so.

These animals are truly amazing. So it should come as no surprise that Snippetz decided we had no choice but to feature these incredibly awesome, incredibly scary and incredibly, well, incredible creatures in our humble magazine. And so, dear readers we hope you get hooked on what we’ve found about sharks!
As if that wasn’t enough, sharks also have a remarkable sense of smell. They can detect a single drop of blood in an Olympic-sized swimming pool. Combine that with their other incredible senses and you’ve got one fierce hunting machine! Once they’ve managed to locate their next meal, sharks jaws are specially designed to help them snag and hang on to their prey. They can actually dislocate and push out their upper jaw to maintain a firm grip on whatever they’ve caught. The jaws of the larger species of sharks are about two times more powerful than a lion’s jaws.
PHYSIOLOGY OF A SHARK Sharks are truly awe-inspiring creatures. Their physiology is designed to make them efficient hunters, from the tip of their noses to the ends of their tails . . . literally. At the tip of their noses, sharks have nodules about the size of a pimple called the Ampullae of Lorenzini, which sense electricity in the water. Sharks can actually sense the electrical impulses from another creature’s beating heart to help them hone in on their prey.
With about 500 species of sharks, there’s bound to be some interesting variations in their physical make up. Some variations are better than others. For example, some sharks have the ability to use muscles around their mouths to pull water in and over their gills to help them breathe while resting. Others, like the great white shark don’t have this ability and instead, use
Even though they don’t have ears in the sense that humans or other mammals do, sharks can hear. They have an inner ear that can hear prey from more than 800 feet away.

Some sharks have even developed the ability to walk, albeit on the ocean floor, not on dry land. There are nine known species of shark use this unique way to get around. Other sharks, about 50 different species in total, have developed lightemitting organs called photospheres that they use to camouflage themselves while hunting, or to attract a mate.
THINGS THAT ARE MORE LIKELY TO KILL YOU THAN A SHARK ATTACK Humans seem to be programmed to be afraid of being killed by a shark, no thanks to movies like “Jaws.” But the truth is that you are not likely The World of Sharks... Continued on Page 3

Sharks have also developed a special membrane on the back of their eyes called the tapetum lucidum which reflects sunlight back into the eye, helping them use whatever light is available (even if it isn’t much) to be able to see better. The waves of pressure created when the object moves through the way is a like a beacon for a shark to know you’re there without ever having to see or hear you!

to be attacked by a shark, let alone killed by one. Here’s a list of a few things that are more likely to kill you than being attacked by a shark:
• Icicles – you have more to worry about from those nasty icicles dangling from your rain gutters during the winter than you do from a shark. Icicles cause 15 deaths annually (without or without the use of a Red Ryder BB Gun).
• Coconuts – coconuts amount for about 150 deaths each year (sharks only kill between four and 12 people annually). • Traffic lights – not the lights themselves, but the intersections that they are meant to control. About 2,000 people die each year at intersections controlled by stoplights due to people not obeying them.
• Champagne corks – it’s true. Popping open a bottle of bubbly is more likely to kill you than a shark is. Champagne corks account for about 24 deaths each year.
• After a large meal, great white sharks can go as long as three months without eating.
• Tripping – better tie those laces, folks. Tripping and falling accounts for about 6,000 deaths annually. • Cows – yep, even these lumbering animals are technically more dangerous than sharks. They cause about 20 deaths each year. • Ladders – don’t let their simple construction and design deceive you; ladders are dangerous. They

• Beds – death by falling out of bed is more likely than death by shark attack. Beds cause about 450 deaths each year.
• Mosquitoes – Bill Gates was right! Mosquitoes are infinitely more dangerous and kill far more people (about 800,000) each year than sharks do, but we still don’t have a “Mosquito Week” on TV yet.

• Some people believe sharks don’t attack in the middle of the day, like around lunchtime. The truth is that fewer people are in the water at that time to be attacked, which accounts for the decline in the reports of an attack. Sharks will feed whenever they are hungry.
• Greenland sharks have been known to eat seals, polar bears, horses, moose and reindeer.
• Bull sharks can live in both fresh and saltwater.
• Galeophobia is the excessive fear of sharks.
• The most numerous sharks found around the world are the oceanic whitetip and the spiny dogfish sharks.
• One prehistoric shark called helicoprion had a buzz-saw like spiral of teeth that it used to slice through its prey. • Tiger sharks are somewhat indiscriminate eaters; scientists have found things like tires, license plates and gasoline tanks inside their stomachs.
• Shark attacks most commonly occur in less than six feet of calm water. • Amanzimtoti Beach, South Africa is the most common place for a shark attack to occur on a human. • Sharks don’t have tongues; their taste buds are located in their teeth. • Great white sharks usually attack humans out of curiosity. It’s believed they don’t like how we taste because they typically don’t stick around to finish the meal.

When you look at thinking patterns, ask yourself if those patterns are modeled after your parents’ patterns. Many people unconsciously take on their parents’ painful patterns whether they want to or not. Patterns are modeled, which speak much louder than words.
BRAIN FOG
D
o you find yourself battling stress, worry, and scattered thoughts on a daily or almost daily basis? Maybe you find yourself getting too caught up in what other people might think of you or your battling to find your independence? Perhaps you work in a toxic environment and you fear being laid off or fired for the smallest infraction? All of these and much more can cause a foggy head or foggy brain. When we are in supreme health (Life Energy Flow Tai Yi), we don’t jump from worry to worry, have a foggy head, constant scattered thoughts, or a low immune system. When our brain is not functioning at its optimal level, it can create a compromised immune system, headaches, lack of focus among other ailments. There are several ways to counter a foggy head.
The Life Energy Flow Tai Yi treatment, Brain Fog, can assist those who have a foggy brain. The treatment will help the brain to slowly release toxins and create a clear channel to facilitate clearer thinking and understanding of what needs to change in your life. If you do
First, look at your diet. Does it contain a lot of processed and/or sugared foods? Do you purchase lower quality foods because purchasing higher quality/organic foods is ‘too expensive’? Do you eat out a lot? When you eat, are you under a strict time limit and/or stress and you eat too quickly? Modifying your diet and/or your way of eating can help with clearing a foggy head or foggy brain.
not feel you have the passion in life you desire (life passion, not just passionate about one or two things) or the joy you want to experience on a daily basis, then ask what you can change to make that happen. As one particular teacher says, “This is your life. This is about your life. And this is about the quality of your life.”

Okra was a predominant ingredient in the regional stew of vegetables and chicken, shrimp or crawfish. The gelatinous liquid in okra helps to thicken gumbos and soups. Slaves also used the seeds as a coffee substitute and the leaves for medicinal purposes.
OUT OF AFRICA
T
here are few vegetables with a more storied past and debatable reputation than okra. This slender green pod comes from the lovely yellow flower of the seemingly impervious Hibiscus Esculentus plant. While this hardy crop would flourish almost anywhere, okra is grown mainly in the South. Those who’ve eaten okra love it, and when separated from it, for reasons of geography or season, miss it. Known to some as ladies’ fingers, bhindi, bamia or mostly commonly as gumbo, which is its West African name, the okra plant is believed to have arrived in North American with the African slave trade. It’s possible that slaver traders or the captives themselves stowed away seeds to bring to the New World. Okra was cherished by both slaves and slave owners. Southern agricultural journals, dating back to the mid1800s, account that it was widely enjoyed and eaten frequently during the growing season in a variety of preparations. The Cajun and Creole cuisines of Louisiana resulted from a New World fusion of foods from the diverse cultures of its early settlers. It was in Louisiana that okra gumbo, the famous dish named after its key ingredient, was born.

Relatively easy to grow, okra tolerates high temperature and scant water, and also is nutritious. Okra is an excellent source of dietary fiber, vitamins B-6 and C, as well as folic acid, potassium and calcium. Okra also contains properties to help with diet-related illnesses like diabetes. The gelatinous interior found in okra helps to slow the absorption of sugar into the blood by forming a kind of gel coating inside the bowels. This slows down the absorption of food from the gut, evening out the peaks in blood glucose that occur after meals.

Even with all its health benefits and historical acclaim, okra has been controversial from its arrival in North America. There are those refuse to eat it or who think it’s a suspiciouslooking pod of slimy repute. This is because of the gelatinous substance okra releases when cut. Proper selection and cooking methods will eliminate that truly minor detail and showcase its delicious flavor. When choosing okra, it’s important to look for small, tender pods, as thick, long pods tend to be tough. Okra should never be sliced until immediately before cooking. This help to prevent some of its gelatinous interior from seeping out. Once you’ve tried this delicacy properly cooked, okra will steal your affections, as it has for so many others who salivate at the mere mention of its name. My recipe for Okra and Shrimp Hush Puppies showcases the best qualities of okra in a historical Southern recipe that is packed with Creole flavors. The Kitchen Diva Continued on Page 7

Back in 2009, Pew Research did a survey, and the average answer was at 68 years old ... unless the person being asked was under 30. Then “old age” struck before age 60, said the youngsters. Those who were already age 65 said old age didn’t arrive until age 74. The result was even disputed by sex; when all ages were averaged, women said age 70, and men said age 66. The top four answers to the question about becoming old netted conflicting mile markers: 1) Turns 85; 2) can’t live independently; 3) can’t drive; 4) turns 75.

drug abuse. In August, 2014 he gave up on life and hanged himself in his California home. His talent was indisputable, but it did not give him the confidence he needed to face the challenges of daily living.
www.AmadaSeniorCare.com/ColoradoSprings with surgery, and spent thousands of dollars on fancy creams and hair coloring. Though her money delayed the inevitable, the inevitable was, well, inevitable.
Status gives some people a sense of confidence. They think if they can get the corner office or win an election or marry into the right family, their life will be grand. But far too many well-connected marriages end in disaster, elected officials fall or fail, and aggressive, successful executives get fired. Status is always temporary and is a poor substitute for real confidence.
Education provides a sense of confidence for some. If they can earn a few more letters after their name or merit a new title such as Doctor or Reverend or Your Honor, then they will be forever respected. Here is a sad story in one sentence: I knew a gentleman who worked most of his life at a drycleaners though he had a law degree.
Appearance is another basis for confidence. Many think their youthfulness and good looks will never fade and their abs will be forever firm. Yet everyone who puts their confidence in how they look will eventually be saddened by natural aging process. For many months my wife and I witnessed up-close and personal a beautiful woman wrestle with the aging process. She hired a personal trainer, had portions of her body boosted and tightened
Money, talent, status, appearance and education are all useful, and contribute to a comfortable and meaningful life. But none are the real source of confidence. The ultimate source of confidence, YOUR ultimate source of confidence, is your Creator. He knows everything about you.

He knows your strengths, weaknesses, good side and bad. He has created within you certain talents and tendencies in precise harmony with his perfect will for your life. Discover his will for your life and you will have all the confidence you need to succeed. Do you remember the lad who killed the giant Goliath with a slingshot? David was his name. Later in life he wrote, “For you have been my hope, Sovereign Lord, my confidence since my youth.” (Ps. 71:5) There, my friend is your true source of confidence. thank you for taking the time to point out that gentle stretching can help, probably by opening up the spaces in between the vertebrae to allow the nerve more room.
STRETCHING HELPS EASE BACK PAIN DEAR DR. ROACH: My wife suffered from spinal stenosis. She had a cortisone shot, which helped for 90 days. She had regular physical therapy meetings. She was in constant pain, but insisted on playing tennis (against her doctor’s wishes). Then, we happened to vacation for a month in Florida, and one of the offered activities was a “stretch” workout. She insisted that she wanted to try it. After the very first time she thought she felt a little better. She went to several of the sessions, and finally asked the trainer what she could buy to keep it up at home. The trainer suggested a stretching DVD. It takes about an hour to complete, and she now does it three times a week. She plays hard tennis five days a week, hasn’t complained about pain since 2010, and hasn’t needed any physical therapy, either. I continue to be amazed. Certainly this kind of therapy can’t hurt anyone, since you do it only to your personal comfort levels. Perhaps you might mention this type of therapy in your column sometime. It worked miracles for us at virtually no cost. -- R.M. ANSWER: Spinal stenosis is caused by pressure on the nerves at the level of the spinal column. Physical therapy is one effective treatment, and one I always recommend prior to considering surgery. I
The booklet on back problems gives an outline of some causes of and treatments for the more-common back maladies. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 303W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: We recently lost a dear relative to cholangiocarcinoma. He had served in the Navy in Vietnam. The probable cause of his cancer was from a parasite, a river fluke, which is common to that region. The diagnosis came way too late to save his life. How can veterans be tested or diagnosed early enough for a possible successful cure? Are there any current tests available? -- J.A.E. ANSWER: I am sorry to hear about your relative. Cholangiocarcinoma is cancer of the bile duct, a rare cancer. Liver flukes are a risk factor, and so is a condition called primary sclerosing cholangitis, a condition associated with ulcerative colitis. The cancer is rare but highly lethal, because by the time symptoms show up, the cancer usually is advanced. Also because of its rarity, screening for the cancer in a general population won’t be effective. However, for people at high risk, such as those with PSC or a history of liver parasites, at least one study has shown that screening with a blood test (CA 19-9, CEA) or by endoscopy can be effective. It would be reasonable to speak with the expert taking care of this problem, usually a gastroenterologist, about screening.
*** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. (c) 2014 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

MOMENTS IN TIME THE HISTORY CHANNEL
• On Aug. 19, 1812, the U.S. Navy frigate Constitution defeats the British frigate Guerri re in an engagement off the coast of Nova Scotia. The British shot merely bounced off the Constitution’s sides, as if the ship were made of iron rather than wood. The bolts fastening the timbers and copper sheathing on “Old Ironsidesâ€? were provided by Paul Revere. • On Aug. 23, 1904, Harold D. Weed of Canastota, New York, is issued U.S. Patent No. 768,495 for his “Grip-Tread for Pneumatic Tires,â€? a tire chain to be used on automobiles to increase traction on roads slick with mud, snow or ice. • On Aug. 20, 1911, a dispatcher in the New York Times office sends the first telegram around the world to determine how fast a commercial message could be sent. After it traveled more than 28,000 miles, relayed by 16 different operators, the reply was received by the same operator 16 1/2 minutes later.
• On Aug. 21, 1920, Daphne Milne, wife of writer A.A. Milne, gives birth to a son the couple names Christopher Robin Milne. Christopher Robin was immortalized in A.A. Milne’s books “Winnie-the-Poohâ€? and “The House at Pooh Corner.â€? • On Aug. 18, 1958, Vladimir Nabokov’s controversial novel “Lolitaâ€? is published in the U.S. The novel, about a man’s obsession with a 12-year-old girl, had been rejected by four publishers before G.P. Putnam’s Sons accepted it. • On Aug. 24, 1969, Company A of the Third Battalion, 196th Light Infantry Brigade refuses the order of its commander, Lt. Eugene Schurtz, Jr., to continue an attack near Da Nang, Vietnam, because they had “simply had enough.â€? Schurtz was relieved of his command and transferred. Neither he nor his men were ever disciplined. • On Aug. 22, 1992, the second day of a standoff at Randy Weaver’s Ruby Ridge cabin in Idaho, FBI sharpshooter Lon Horiuchi wounds Weaver and kills his unarmed wife, Vicki, as she holds their baby daughter. In 1997, Horiuchi was charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death, but a federal judge dismissed the charge, citing the alleged immunity of federal officers. (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

• It was French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre who made the following sage observation: “Three o’clock is always too late or too early for anything you want to do.” • Those who study such things say that of all teenagers who wear braces, at least 60 percent have matched the rubber bands on their brackets to their outfits. • Mary Todd Lincoln’s half-sister, Emily Todd, was married to Confederate Gen. Benjamin Helm. When her husband died in 1863, Emily crossed Union lines to visit her sister in the White House. Newspapers in the North created a furor over the incident, speculating that the general’s widow could be a spy. After taking an oath of loyalty to the Union, Emily Helm was granted amnesty. • John Lennon appeared on the first cover of Rolling Stone magazine.
• Do you go to action movies just to see the car chases? Here’s a real-life doozy for you: In 2002, after a bank robbery in Wrestedt, Germany, the culprits led law-enforcement officials on a 620-mile chase through several countries. After two days, the criminals were finally apprehended in Rivne, Ukraine. • The original Mickey and Minnie Mouse were voiced by Wayne Allwine and Russi Taylor. The human pair also were married in real life. • If you’re like 37 percent of Americans, you feel a sense of satisfaction when you finish vacuuming. If you’re like the rest of us, you just hope the kids wait a few hours before spilling cereal on the carpet again. • According to historians, Roman emperor Caligula once declared war on Neptune, the god of the sea. After his soldiers ran into the ocean and stabbed at the water, Caligula declared victory and ordered the men to collect seashells as war trophies. *** Thought for the Day: “In the end, everything is a gag.” -- Charlie Chaplin (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

LIVING LARGE IN A RETAIL LODGE, AND THE CURIOUS CASE OF THE TEXAS TEEN

❖
It all sounds kind of ridiculous now. What the mega-store actually became was a hotspot for teenagers when there was nothing else to do. I remember a lot of my late high school years spent roaming around the oversized warehouse after midnight. We’d spend 45-minutes there only to buy a soda or a $5 movie and get on with our weekend. Why it is that teenagers are drawn to any business open 24/7? Heck, 17year-old-Nick would have hung out at a 7-11 simply because he could go there at 1am with some friends. There’s just… something about it.
where, somehow, a person has been living in a retail store for years? Maybe employees just assume he/ she goes there every day. They all work different shifts so how are they to know that someone’s been there the whole time? Plus, it’s not like the resident is going to stay in the building all day and night. The suspect would likely be in and out of their “home” just like the rest of us.
All of this has me thinking big ideas. We need some kind of reality television show where high school teens compete to see who can live undetected in a superstore the longest. The show could feature Walmart, Target, Sam’s, etc. The store manager would know, but the staff would be completely unaware. Whoever lasts the longest gets a $10,000 shopping spree? We’ll obviously feature different themed seasons – College Dropouts, Single Mom’s, Celebrities, Small Town Columnists. I bet I could last at least a week. I’m a fighter. We could even offer some kind of surprise $1.50 raise to the employees that expose the contestants! Maybe there could be some weekly challenges too? I’ll have to work out the details.
In the case of the Texas teen though, he did not feel the need to get out much. The unidentified 14-year old boy created a series of “camp sites” Which is why when I read a recent for himself.
