hen you sit down to watch a movie in a theater or perhaps in the comfort of your own home, you probably don’t give much thought to how the movie was made. That would ruin the cinematic experience. that maybe Wendy had been hallucinating the whole thing. As he leaves, Ullman hands Danny the weird yellow ball that was seen throughout the movie and Wendy takes that to mean that Ullman was behind all the paranormal activity at the hotel.

what makes movies great isn’t just about what we see on the screen but also what we don’t see. Some of the greatest movies may not have turned out quite so well if those rewrites hadn’t been done or if the endings hadn’t been tweaked at the last minute. Snippetz couldn’t help but wonder: what are some of the alternate endings we never saw to some of our favorite films?

The ending as it stands leaves the option for a movie version of “Dr. Sleep,” King’s follow-up novel to “The Shining.” Oh goodie!

NATIONAL LAMPOON’S VACATION

THE WIZARD OF OZ

The National Lampoon’s movies have always done well with audiences, thanks to their audacious scenarios and of course, Chevy Chase. However, “Vacation” director Harold Ramis said that the movie’s original ending was so badly received by audiences that they were laughing for 80 minutes and then just stopped cold as the movie concluded. In that original version, Clark Griswold, played by Chase is so upset that Wally World is closed for maintenance when he and his family

Technically speaking, The Wizard of Oz didn’t have an alternate ending and viewing audiences didn’t miss out on any great scenes that were deleted for the final production. But because the movie is such a classic, it’s worth mentioning something we almost DIDN’T get to see. Early viewing audiences thought that Dorothy’s iconic “Over the Rainbow” song slowed down the plot and it was very nearly taken out. Nowadays it’s almost impossible to imagine the movie without it and there’s no telling if it would’ve become the epic film it is now had the song been deleted.

THE SHINING

finally get there that he goes to Roy Wally’s house and holds the man at gunpoint while Wally entertains the Griswold family. Six months after the failed initial release of the film (with the not-so-funny ending), the ending we enjoy today was filmed, with Clark holding a security guard hostage while the family plays at the theme park.

FATAL ATTRACTION At the end of this classic thriller, Alex Forrest the obsessed and then jilted lover of Dan Gallagher is shot in the bathtub by Gallagher’s wife, Beth. Originally, however the movie ended with Forrest slashing her own throat and framing her ex-lover for the crime. In that ending, Beth is able to find a cassette tape that Alex sent to Dan, threatening to commit suicide and Dan is acquitted of the murder.

Audiences didn’t like the fact that the crazy woman got off so easily so after a three-week reshoot, the film ended in a much more satisfying way. Glenn Alternate Movie Endings...

In this super scary movie based on Stephen King’s book (and set in the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado), director Stanley Kubrick originally had filmed additional footage at the end that he decided to leave out of the final cut. In the extended ending, after showing the frozen body of Jack Torrence in the snow, the scene cuts to Jack’s wife Wendy and their son Danny in a nearby hospital. Stuart Ullman, the manager of the Overlook Hotel where the movie takes place visits Wendy and Danny and tells them that investigators didn’t find any evidence that anything out of the ordinary had happened there, indicating

Close played Forrest and was adamantly against filming the new ending, claiming that her character was much more likely to “self-destruct and commit suicide.” The original ending was included in the Japanese version of the film.

E.T.: THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL For some of us, E.T. was a staple in our childhood repertoire of movies.

But the happy ending with E.T. getting rescued by his alien brethren was not what director Steven Spielberg had initially planned as the ending.

Instead, the original ending included E.T. dying. Can you imagine the psychological damage we would’ve suffered if the original ending hadn’t been cut?

RETURN OF THE JEDI Initially, this movie was slated to end with Han Solo dying during a raid on the Imperial base. Producer Gary Kurtz and creator George Lucas didn’t see eye-to-eye on the ending and Kurtz said that Lucas was concerned about how the death of one of the main characters would impact merchandising and so the pair agreed not to kill off any main characters at all, ending the movie in a sort of teddy bear luau.

Following the completion of the film, Kurtz and Lucas parted ways.

ROCKY Here’s an alternate ending that fans of the Rocky movies will be glad never came to pass: in the original screenplay, Sylvester Stallone had written that Rocky would take money

for throwing the fight against Apollo Creed and then use the funds to open a pet store with Adrian. Not sure what that would have done to prospects of additional Rocky films but it’s probably safe to say audiences appreciated the rewrite.

DR. STRANGELOVE We all know how this iconic movie ends, with Major T.J. “King” Kong riding a nuclear bomb as it descends to Earth and Dr. Strangelove suddenly being able to walk again, just as the Doomsday Machine detonates the nuclear bombs across the world.

Admittedly, the ending is a bit of a downer but the alternate ending that was almost used goes to the complete opposite end of the spectrum. It shows a massive pie fight at the Pentagon, including the President of the United States and the Russian Ambassador hitting each other in the face with pies. Stanley Kubrick vetoed that ending and instead used the one that audiences have come to know and love . . . and that is much more fitting with the tone of the film as a whole.

This movie about a prostitute with a heart of gold who falls in love with a rich john could have ended in a much less “feel-good” kind of way. The original ending called for Edward (the john) to give Vivian (the prostitute) the envelope of cash in the amount they agreed to at the beginning of the movie and drive away, leaving Vivian back on the streets, hysterically crying and completely depressed. Director Gary Marshall said that Disney wanted a “prettier” ending and thus, they filmed the ending we all remember, with Edward coming back to Vivian’s apartment in a limo, brandishing a bouquet of flowers and then climbing up the fire escape to be with her.

Among all the fruits and vegetables that are abundant in summer, there is a group of gourds literally named after the season. Summer squash is a colorful family of yellow, patty pan, scalloped and zucchini squash that flower prolifically and fruit throughout the warm months.

This particular clan got its name due to its short shelf life, which differs from the hard-skinned, long-lasting winter squashes such as butternut or acorn. In essence, all summer squash are really just a hard-rind squash that is picked in its immature state Squash gets its name from an Indian word, “askutasquash,” meaning raw or uncooked. It’s believed that Native Americans were growing varieties of squash as one of their “Three Sisters” crops: a combination of corn, beans and squash grown together in a mound. This was to take advantage of their symbiotic

relationship. The corn provided a structure on which the beans could grow, the beans nourished the soil with nitrogen, and the squash plant provided shade for the planting bed. These indigenous people then introduced the plant to the early European settlers. But while squash as a group has its roots firmly in the Americas, zucchini, as we know it now, was developed as a variety by the Italians, who eat it in countless preparations.

In much of the country, most types of summer squash are relatively easy to establish in the home garden. Often, home gardeners find themselves overwhelmed with a continuous supply of the crop.

Hence, the numerous recipes for squash this and zucchini that. And while most of us are familiar with crook-neck squash or zucchini, summer is the time to try the lesser-known varieties that are available as well.

Because the fruit of the summer squash grows fast once it starts, a common mistake of many growers, homegrown and commercially, is picking them too late.

In their young state, still relatively small, the flesh and skin are tender, and the seeds undeveloped, yielding the most delicious fruit. So, when growing your own squash, check your plants daily once flowering begins, and harvest the fruit early. When buying them at the store, choose the smallest specimens with wellcolored skin.

And while summer squash most often is eaten cooked, fresh tender squash is delicious in many raw preparations as well. For an unusual way to prepare squash, try my recipe for Summer Squash with Sweet Corn and Orzo Pasta. Try using different types of summer squash. It’s delicious hot or cold!

SUMMER SQUASH WITH ORZO PASTA 1 (16 ounce) box of orzo pasta 4 summer squash (cousa, zephyr, costata romanesco and round zucchini) 3 ears of sweet corn 4 tablespoons olive oil 3 green onions, green and white parts, root ends discarded, chopped 3 cloves of garlic, finely chopped 1 teaspoon salt plus 1/2 tablespoon more for the pasta water 1 teaspoon black pepper 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper 2 large tomatoes, diced Juice of 1 large lemon 1 bunch of fresh basil, torn Shaved Parmesan cheese 1. On high heat, cover a large pot of water (per package directions for the orzo pasta) and bring to a boil. Meanwhile, rinse squash and trim off ends. Slice in half, lengthwise and then crosswise into half moons of the same size, so that they cook evenly. Set aside.

2. Peel back corn husk and silky tassles.

Pop husk off the cob and discard it. Place an ear of corn, cut side down, in a shallow bowl, in the circle of a Bundt cake pan, or on a cutting board. Hold it near the top of the ear, and using a sharp knife, start at the top and cut downward with a gentle sawing motion; cut until all the corn is removed. Reserve the corn cobs to place in pasta water for more corn flavor, if desired.

3. When pasta water comes to boil, add 1/2 tablespoon salt, pasta and the naked cobs to the boiling water. Cook, uncovered, per package directions.

4. In a large saute pan on medium-high heat, add two tablespoons olive oil. Add onion and garlic, salt, pepper, nutmeg and cayenne pepper. Saute 2 minutes.

Add the squash and corn. Saute until tender, about 5 to 7 minutes. Turn off heat.

5. Drain the cooked pasta. In a large bowl, mix pasta with the squash mixture and toss with the tomatoes, lemon juice and remaining olive oil. Add additional salt and pepper, as needed. Sprinkle the basil leaves and Parmesan on top. Serves 4.

It is what Covey calls the 8th Habit.” If you want to find your voice and inspire others to find theirs, buy and read this book. I’ve read the book several times.

Resource #6: The One Thing by Gary Keller and Jay Papasan. This little book jumped out at me while browsing at the library. I grabbed it off the shelf, took it home and consumed it in a few hours then purchased my own copy. You should too, especially if you find yourself overwhelmed by the variety of tasks you face each day. Keller will help you be more productive in your daily life and thus fulfill your purpose for living.

AT WHAT AGE CAN COLONOSCOPY STOP? DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 75-plus-yearold female in excellent health. My doctor’s comment on my most recent annual physical test results was: “Great results on all tests. Excellent report.” My question: Is it necessary to have another colonoscopy at my age and with my good health. My mother died of colon/rectal cancer at age 85 in 2002, and all family members were advised to have this procedure.

My initial results were two or three polyps removed that were not the type that would recur and were not cancerous. The recommended follow-up was five years. The results of that exam showed no polyps, slight indication of diverticulosis and no recommendation for future follow-up.

My previous doctor has retired, and I just received a letter from his replacement that I am due for another procedure. I am not inclined to do this at my age, and considering the “all clear” reports of the previous exams and my general good health. I would appreciate your thoughts and recommendation. -- B.J.M. ANSWER: The odds are low that the colonoscopy would find something there, but there is still a small chance, especially with your mother having had colon cancer.

Not having it is reasonable. But since you seem to be otherwise healthy and can expect a longer life than average, I would still say to get it. In fact, I would encourage you to have it.

DEAR DR. ROACH: My grandson, who is 8 years old, twitches in his sleep. He is tired during the day, but he sleeps eight to 10 hours. While he is sleeping, his body just jerks. Some nights are good and some not. Do we need to address this to the doctor? -- C.G.J. ANSWER: Muscle jerks or twitches at nighttime are normal. There is a very, very small risk that this is a type of epilepsy, but if it is occurring only at night, and there is no family history of epilepsy, it is almost certainly normal. It may lessen as he gets older, but is probably nothing to worry about. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 68 and take seven to eight pills daily, including lisinopril, Caduet, a beta blocker, gout medicine and Flomax. My question is, Can I take them all at once in the morning, or should they be spaced out throughout the day?

The first and most common reason would be that I forgot; it’s an honest mistake and I feel bad about it. The second, rarer occurrence, is that I no longer feel obligated to uphold my end of a promise.

But I digress. Several of last year’s teams are just too good to backslide out of the playoffs. This means we’ll likely get somewhere between 3-5 new playoff teams. I decided to split the difference. Here are my predicted playoff teams by conference:

THE PLAYOFF TEAMS Here’s where things get fun. Every year, pundits and professionals rally around the same twelve teams that made the playoffs the year before.

That holds zero credibility in the NFL. Over the last decade or so, the NFL has shown an incredible amount of parity throughout the league. In fact, on average, the NFL has 6-of-12 new playoff teams every year!

As you can see, I have picked a couple of surprise teams to make the playoffs.

Don’t freak out – it happens every year.

This year the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New York Jets probably stand out among surprise teams. On the outside looking in, I wouldn’t count out the Houston Texans to shock the world in the AFC. In the NFC I wouldn’t totally discount the 49’ers or Vikings, if either one of their defenses can carry them to a wildcard berth.

THE CONTENDERS Making the playoffs is great but, let’s be honest, only a handful of the final twelve teams are actual title contenders. In the AFC I see the Indianapolis Colts making a run by defeating the Jets at home and getting a tough road win in New England. Andrew Luck’s Colts made waves last year in a thrill-

ing comeback against the Chiefs in the playoffs last year; never count them out. In the AFC Title game the most obvious choice for an opponent will be your 2014 Denver Broncos. Fresh off a stomping of the Baltimore Ravens, the Broncos will look poised to avenge their humiliating Super Bowl loss last year, by returning this year.

In the NFC, I like the top two seeds to take care of business at home against the Packers and Lions. Which would leave us with a thrilling Seattle at New Orleans showdown of what could be the best defense and offense (respectively) staring each other down.

SUPER BOWL XLIX In an attempt to find myself unpopular locally, it says here that both of last year’s Super Bowl participants will come short of returning to the big game. That leaves us with an offensive showdown as the Indianapolis Colts square off with Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints in Glendale, AZ. My official Super Bowl prediction for the 2014 NFL season? New Orleans Saints 31, Indianapolis Colts 19.

t is that dreaded time of year again: back to school. That’s right, summer came to an end here in Monument, at the Lewis Palmer School District on Wednesday, making kids that slept in until noon during the summer wake up nearly six hours earlier to learn.
