“Call them what you want. Garden gnomes. Lawn ornaments. Little evil outdoor statuary hell-bent on world domination. It doesn’t matter. What does matter is that, right now, they’re hiding in plain sight, pretending to be symbols of merriment and good will.” – Chuck Sambuchino, author

lthough it seems unlikely that garden gnomes aren’t just statues that people put in their yards but rather little demons plotting our demise, they are still very curious creatures. Small, silly and sort of creepy, garden gnomes can definitely give you cause to ponder: what’s the point? Who came up with the idea of making some funky little man (or woman) that sits in your yard and does nothing more than make people do a double-take when they walk by? Sure, they can

But even as the gnomes’ popularity increased, events like World War II hit the industry particularly hard and many of the newer companies that came on the scene to make the gnomes found they couldn’t keep their doors open. While they can still be found today, the quality is not what it used to be, thanks to cheap labor and materials used to massproduce them.
make you smile, what with their huge pointy hats and their sometimes ridiculous poses. But is that it? And what’s with the other lawn ornaments out there. Pink flamingos . . . really? What’s the point of those? They don’t seem whimsical and cute. They seem strangely out of place, especially in colorful Colorado. Questions like these prompted us at Snippetz to dig up the dirt on these lawn ornaments . . . and here’s what we’ve found!

The pink flamingo is a much more recent development than the gnome. And it probably comes as no surprise that it was created right here in the United States. It might surprise you that the birds were not created somewhere tropical-esque, like Florida or Hawaii. Nope, they were created in Leominster, Massachusetts in 1957. The town itself claims to be the Plastics Capital of the World.
Since at least the Renaissance, and possibly earlier, people have been creating statues to place in their gardens. By the late 1700s, porcelain “house dwarfs” were being crafted and enjoyed popularity through the 1800s. Around that same time, wooden gnome statues were being carved in Switzerland, however it remains a bit unclear who actually created the first gnome. Some believe it was a pair of ceramic workers from Dresden, Germany who supposedly had the gnomes on their shelves in the early 1840s. Others claim they got their start a bit later, in the German town of Gräfenroda, also known for its high-quality ceramics.
For some reason, Union Products wanted someone to create a plastic flamingo for them. They hired Don Featherstone, a sculptor from an art school nearby and for his second assignment, he had to
Terracotta versions of the gnomes were created by a German sculptor and potter named Philip Griebel who said his gnomes were based on local myths about a gnome’s willingness to tend their gardens at night. In fact, his descendants were some of the last German producers to make the little creatures.

Featherstone said that the popularity of the birds grew following the cookiecutter subdivisions that sprouted up after World War II. As a way to distinguish their house from their neighbors’ houses, people could plant a flamingo in their yard. The trend caught on and in 1996, Featherstone was awarded with the Ig Nobel Prize for Art. Union Products no longer holds the copyright for the plastic molds used to create the original Featherstone flamingos. Cado Manufacturing purchased the copyrights and the entire Union Products product line, including their pink flamingo. There are many plastic flamingo creators out there but the “official” Featherstone pink flamingo will often include his signature near the underside on the back of Garden Gnomes... make the now-iconic ornament. Because he had nothing to reference to create the figure, Featherstone dug through some old National Geographic magazines until he found a photo spread that he used to create the model, which took about two weeks to complete.
Origins debate aside, garden gnomes grew in popularity and soon they could be found all throughout Germany, France and England. In 1847, Sir Charles Isham of England happened upon the creatures and brought 21 terracotta gnomes back from a trip to Germany. He placed them throughout the gardens around his home, Lamport Hall in Northamptonshire. Of those 21 original gnomes, only one is still around today. He is known as “Lampy”

the bird. Those “official” birds were sold in pairs, one with its head up and the other with its head down, as if feeding.
• In 2009, the Common Council for Madison, Wisconsin designated the plastic pink flamingo as the city’s official bird.
GNOME PRANKS Not surprisingly, garden gnomes have become the proverbial butt of the joke. Pranksters have started finding interesting ways to play a joke on the people who have gnomes in their gardens. Sometimes, they will actually steal the gnomes and take them on a trip, then photograph the gnome in front of national monuments or iconic tourist locations. One such group of pranksters refers to themselves as the Garden Gnome Liberation Front, based out of France. They have been known to steal gnomes on a grand scale and then relocate them in a wooded area. They say they are releasing the gnomes into the wild. In another instance, they strung up dozens of gnomes from a bridge and left a note claiming the gnomes had committed suicide to escape their lives of servitude.
FLAMINGO PRANKS The interesting thing about flamingo pranks in comparison to gnome pranks is that most flamingo pranks involve putting far too many flamingos in a place, rather than taking them away. One famous instance was in 1979 and was performed by the Pail and Shovel Party, a group that eventually took control of the Wisconsin Student Association at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. They covered Bascom Hill with 1008 plastic flamingos on the morning of the first day of classes for the year.
• There are more plastic pink flamingos in the United States than real ones. • Following the release of John Waters’ movie “Pink Flamingo” the ornaments took on the role of the most classic example of tacky lawn art.

ome things in life have become much easier or convenient due to technology. Through the use of cellular phones, we are always able to attempt to call someone on the go or have a flashlight using the flashlight application. Through the use of the Internet, we can easily research something on a moment’s notice and 24 hours a day. But is all technology beneficial to us? Currently, there are two major biotech companies. One of those companies is the largest and most profitable. It uses technology to change or adapt our food. The company’s promise is that the technology will be used to feed the world and make agriculture more convenient. That convenience comes in being able to spray crops with an abundance of weed killer without killing the crop. It also makes the crops aluminum resistant.
When people eat a lot of processed foods (most contain soy and corn) and processed sugar, the body begins collecting toxins from those foods. Over a period of time, the person can experience many different health issues aside from weight gain. For this to change, one can receive the Tai Yi treatment Poisoned Health. This treatment will assist the intestines in releasing toxins more easily and reduce the likelihood of developing a disease from impacted intestines. The person receiving this treatment can expect to feel a toxin release over a few to several days and begin feeling lighter and more at ease.

More commonly, soybeans are genetically modified to resist weed killer. That allows the farmer to heavily spray the soybean crops. Approximately, 90% of our soybeans are genetically modified (GM), 85% of our corn is GM, 70% of our wheat and cotton are GM. By changing the genetics of the foods, what does it due to human’s genetic structure over a period of time? It begins to alter it and the human body collects and reacts to the toxins.

s someone whose schedule includes 2 AP classes, 1 honors course, and 2 above grade level courses, I know as well as any that difficult classes come with a hefty workload. The question is where do you find all the time to do everything you need, as well as have a little fun. Personally I don’t have any time management skills so I wind up with as little as 2 hours of sleep as I cram, procrastinate, and work my tail feathers off to get my homework done.

Other people, like sophomore Jonathan Olds find time by setting a certain amount of hours for each item on his to do list. “I usually have an hour for myself and then spend between two and four hours doing homework before relaxing,” says Olds. “Balancing a social life is easy in the modern era,” says Andrew Elstad. “Being able to text or Skype is very helpful when it comes to juggling homework, to after school events and so on.” Whether you’re irresponsible and procrastinate like me, or find time in your day for everything that needs to be done it’s important that you get things done on time.

YOGA BOOSTS MEMORY
Y
oga is thought of as an umbrella term for various forms of the discipline, but some kinds of yoga are said to be better for seniors than others. A study done by the University of Illinois focused on Hatha yoga, which uses specific poses with flowing movements, meditation and breathing. Researchers divided seniors ranging from 55 to 79 years of age into two groups. One group did the specific Hatha yoga steps, and the other did toning and stretching.
There are, however, dozens of other forms of yoga for seniors to explore, and classes are popping up everywhere, as well as for tai chi and qigong. After taking yoga, tai chi and qigong classes, here is my assessment: Yoga (any kind) involves painful poses, some on the floor. Tai chi is done standing up, but poses are complicated. Qigong has gentle, flowing movements done standing up. All of them offer benefits for strength, flexibility, balance, stress reduction -- and memory, in my estimation.

PERCEIVE A BETTER YOU By Ron Ross
H
ow you perceive yourself will contribute to or detract from your success and happiness in life. Most people call this self-esteem. They suggest you need a vision of your life as you would like it to be so you can move toward success. They are right; however, consider with me another word-phrase to substitute for “vision.” The word-phrase I prefer is “self-perception”, a concept with greater depth of meaning than vision, selfesteem or self-confidence. What does it mean “to perceive”? According to Dictionary.com “perceive” means “to become aware of, to know, or identify by means of the senses.” And the second definition is, “to recognize, discern, envision or understand.” Its origin is in a Latin word (percipere) which means to “obtain, gather, seize entirely, take possession of,” also, figuratively, “to
Assisted Living Independent Living Adult Family Homes grasp with the mind, learn, comprehend,” literally “to take entirely.” You see why I like this word? It is much better to know yourself, to understand yourself, to seize entirely and take possession of yourself than it is to have a vision which may be more a flight of fancy than a realistic assessment of whom you are and why you are here! Let’s take a closer look at how selfperception helps you. Perception starts with reality. Self-perception helps you clarify your present status. You can never go anywhere significant until you know where you are right now. You may dream about becoming a millionaire in one year or starting a business in six months, but unless you have a clear understanding of where you are right now you’ll never know what the next step to your success should be. Vision starts with imagination, desire, or fantasy; self-perception starts with reality. Perception adds specifics to your view of self and your view of your future. An honest perception of yourself requires you to set specific goals that lead you to achieve your purpose. When I was a young man, God called me to be a missionary to

The reality was I could leave for Africa only if I had certain credentials and sufficient financial support. We were told the financial support and proper documents could take up to two years to organize. Everything had to be in place before we stepped foot on an airplane to fulfill the call. Our vision was to be missionaries. Our perception told us some very specific things had to be done to realize the vision. Perception keeps you focused on the next thing while vision can keep you way far out in the sweet by-and-by. Perception keeps you moving forward toward your goal, and keeps asking the question: What needs to be done next. Vision makes you feel good; perception requires you think, plan and execute. lead you to a better you. It will reveal your real strengths, your finest assets, your most valuable resources, and your greatest worth. It will show you who you are and why you are hear and then empower you to action. Self-perception is more comprehensive, more powerful and more life-impacting than self-image or selfesteem. How do you perceive yourself? Think about it.

Individualized treatment for:
*** DEAR DR. ROACH: My friend had skin cancer on her nose, and her doctor treated it by cutting it off. My friend said she has had many, and her doctor always cuts them off. I had skin cancer about 20 years ago. My doctor gave me Efudex cream, which worked on my skin cancers, but did nothing to my healthy skin. Why in the world aren’t today’s skin-cancer doctors prescribing Efudex? It’s so great. -- D.P.
WEIGHT GAIN ISN’T INEVITABLE WITH AGE DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a woman and will be 59 in a month. I’m in excellent health. I’ve worked out seriously with weight-bearing exercises for nearly 30 years. I have great muscle tone, and I believe I am height/weight proportional (5 feet, 2 inches tall, weigh 130 pounds). Is it inevitable that women gain weight as they age? Is it possible to maintain weight past menopause? I have slowly gained five pounds in the past year, and I’ve developed a little bulge under my navel. I’ve increased my cardio workout to lose weight, while continuing my weight-lifting regimen. I seem to be getting results slowly but surely. But that bulge is still there. Should I just learn to live with it? -- D.H. ANSWER: Many women would be very envious of your good health and even your current weight and waistline numbers. However, in your case, it is healthiest to continue at the same weight you have been all your life. Also, abdominal fat is the most metabolically active fat, and the one most likely to increase your risk of heart disease. It’s not inevitable that you’ll gain weight. Both men and women tend to slow down a bit metabolically as we age. Unless exercise increases or food intake decreases, you are at risk for weight gain. Highly processed, starchy foods may increase your risk of weight gain. Slow but sure results definitely are best, so keep at it and don’t get frustrated.
ANSWER: I don’t have enough information to say what the best treatment is for your friend. For the most common skin cancer, basal cell carcinoma, both surgery and 5-fluorouracil (Efudex) are very effective, around 95 percent effective or more. However, authorities recommend particular care with Efudex around the eyes, lips and nose, and in these cases surgery may be both more effective and better tolerated. If the cancer was a squamous cell cancer, Efudex is sometimes used, but surgery tends to be preferred. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: What can you tell me about prurigo nodularis? Is there a cure? -- N.R. ANSWER: “Prurigo” is from the Latin word for “itching,” and so prurigo nodularis is a chronic skin condition of itchy nodules, most commonly on the outsides of the arms and legs. The itching can be quite severe. Because prurigo nodularis sometimes is associated with systemic medical disease, the dermatologist normally will look for kidney and liver problems and chronic infections. Unfortunately, there is not a cure. Most people get relief from steroids, and ointments tend to be more powerful than the cream form. Placing a bandage on top further increases effectiveness. Injection of steroids can be done by an expert, usually a dermatologist.
*** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. (c) 2014 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

MOMENTS IN TIME THE HISTORY CHANNEL
• On Sept. 17, 1884, Judge Allen disposes of 13 criminal cases on his docket in only six minutes. A defendant in Oakland, California’s criminal court did not stand much of a chance of gaining an acquittal. In a 40year period, only 1 defendant in 100 was acquitted. • On Sept. 16, 1932, in his cell near Bombay, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi begins a hunger strike in protest of the British government’s decision to separate India’s electoral system by caste. Gandhi worked all his life to spread his own brand of passive resistance. • On Sept. 15, 1954, the famous picture of Marilyn Monroe, laughing as her skirt is blown up by the blast from a subway vent, is shot. The scene infuriated her husband, Joe DiMaggio, and the couple divorced shortly afterward. • On Sept. 21, 1968, Jeannie C. Riley is the first woman to top the Country and Pop charts simultaneously. “Harper Val-
ley P.T.A.â€? was her first professional demo, which was released as a single. Eventually Riley became a born-again Christian and refused to perform her biggest career hit. • On Sept. 20, 1975, the Bay City Rollers make their U.S. debut on “Saturday Night Liveâ€? with Howard Cosell. The Rollers already were an enormous phenomenon in the U.K., where their every move was greeted by the kind of hysteria not seen since the height of Beatlemania. • On Sept. 18, 1981, the 20,000-car parking lot at Canada’s West Edmonton Mall makes the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest parking lot in the world. The West Edmonton Mall’s parking-lot record will soon be broken. In Dubai, a 40,000-space parking lot is under construction at a shopping center. • On Sept. 19, 1995, a manifesto by the Unabomber is published by The New York Times and Washington Post in the hope that someone will recognize the person who, for 17 years, killed and maimed innocent people by sending homemade bombs through the mail. David Kaczynski linked the writing style to that of his older brother Ted, who was later convicted of the attacks and sentenced to life in prison without parole. c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

The song was nominated for a Grammy but lost to “Flowers on the Wall” by the Statler Brothers. 3. “Rock Your Baby,” in 1974. 4. April Wine, in 1971. 5. “For What It’s Worth,” released by the Buffalo Springfield in 1967. The song was in response to a community curfew imposed on young music fans, who then demonstrated in downtown Los Angeles. This was the first of the Sunset Strip curfew riots (also called the “hippie riots”) where police and youth clashed.

t’s been 6 years now since I graduated high school. In a lot of ways it feels like longer; in other ways, much shorter. But that’s how these things go. One of the more notable decisions I made coming out of school was to not go back. Most teens from this area are destined for college before they even enter high school. Some are more suited for trade schools than universities, but feel pressured into a more “legitimate” degree. This has caused a great national complication. Last week, in a survey conducted by CNN, it was revealed that over 40 million Americans have

outstanding student loan debt. Not only is that number staggering, it’s also growing. In 2008, the very year I graduated, the number of Americans with outstanding student loan debt stood at 29 million. The average debt has also increased by $6,000. Though with tuitions constantly rising, that comes as no surprise.

school aren’t afraid of student loans because getting a loan is necessary and normal in American culture. You have to get a car loan. You have to get a home loan. And now, you have to get a student loan.

the old way of basing everything off borrowing is coming to an end. I’m saying that the most important thing is that kids pursue their dreams – whether that requires a college degree or riding a bus through Europe for a year. Success is defined differently by everyone. Maybe some people are proud of their crippling debt, but I’d bet against it. So if there are any dreamers of a certain age out there reading this I have a message: Only take on a debt you know you can return. Don’t take it because you feel like you have to. And most importantly - do you. Finances shouldn’t define who you are as a person. It shouldn’t be a central figure in the hearts of your friends, family, and descendants once you’ve passed. Most of all, your finances shouldn’t hold you back from doing whatever it is that you love. Don’t let them.

THE RULES OF MONEY
Q
uickly now, which would you rather have at the end of 31 days – a million dollars or a penny that has been doubled each and every day? If you are like most people you would have chosen the $1 million. Unfortunately, like most people you would have chosen poorly. That humble penny, doubling every day, would have grown to over $10 million -$10,737,418.24 to be exact. Don’t believe me? Do the math. One cent becomes two, two becomes four, four becomes eight, eight sixteen and on it goes until 5 million becomes 10 million. That is the power of compounded interest, a power that is often overlooked and grossly misunderstood when we talk about money.
Here are a few other rules of money that are oftentimes overlooked.
IS IT A NEED OR IS IT A WANT How we choose to spend our money is a choice. By understanding the difference between what is really needed and what it is we want we can avoid becoming a victim of circumstance. Our financial needs are really quite simple, food, shelter and clothing. Everything else is merely a want; however, our wants can be endless. Too often I find that many have put themselves in an unnecessary position of hardship (read debt) because they failed to realize the difference between what is needed and what is wanted. By making the choice to live well within your means you can put yourself in the position of financial control. And that is a strong financial place to be.
THE ENDLESS SEARCH FOR MORE It is only natural to want a better life. A raise at work or a new position may well make it possible to get a nicer home or a better car. Unfortunately, for too many, it becomes far too easy to presume on the future – that those raises and promotions will continue – and establish a lifestyle based upon those assumptions. When the raises and promotions don’t come they oftentimes put themselves in the position where debt is used to satisfy their expectations. Thus creating a lifestyle, based upon
debt, that can lead to financial ruin. It is better to find happiness somewhere other than in our possessions.
EVERY OPTION HAS COSTS By understanding the opportunity costs of our financial choices and making the time to understand those choices we can make better financial decisions. Every time we choose to spend money we are making a choice. We are giving up other opportunities in order to fulfill a current need or want. Is it better to buy new furniture or set aside the money for the kid’s college education? I don’t know the answer. That is your choice. But I do know it is better to be in control of your decisions than to allow circumstances, or worse, short term wants to drive your choices.
SUNKEN COST MYTH We have all been in situations where we have incurred expenses that can never be recovered. Whether it be a car that needs a new motor, an investment that only goes South or something else that seems to require an endless stream of money. The sunken cost myth is just that, a myth, a belief that somehow if we only invest more time, more money or more effort we can recover what has been promised. That is a fallacy. Don’t throw good money after bad. In investing, I find too often investors will hold onto an investment and even invest more with the hopes that they will at some point at least break even. The cost unfortunately was lost opportunity and better use of resources. Make your decision to invest your time, your money, or your talents based upon the facts today and not upon your choices made yesterday.

RISK With every financial choice comes risk, especially when we make the decision to invest. When we accept a greater risk with our investments it is reasonable to expect a potentially greater return. If you choose to invest in US government bonds you can expect a high degree of safety and a very low return on your investment. When you invest in a US corporation you have the opportunity for a much higher return, however, that return carries with it the risk of losing some or even all of your investment. I would encourage you to avoid investments that promise high guaranteed returns with little or no risk. There ain’t no such thing as a free lunch. Sadly money does not come with operating instructions. For most of us a lot of time was spent on learning how to make money. Unfortunately, through-
